The Mt Keith Mining Alliance operates a fleet of large capacity hydraulic face shovels and more than 40 X 240 t capacity haul trucks to deliver annual production in excess of 40 Mbcm per annum. The Mt Keith Nickel mine is currently operating at a depth to 300 m below surface with a planned final depth of the order of 500 m. As is the case with any large open pit managing the health of the workforce on continuous shift operations is of critical importance to achieving outstanding safety and production outcomes. Fatigue management at Mt Keith is effectively managed by the personnel operating the mining equipment, with assistance and understanding of the management team and supervisors. The program has been driven through the introduction of Fatigue Champions and a comprehensive management plan that includes education, individual health plans and the use of new technologies. Mt Keith has been instrumental in trialling new technology which assists in monitoring fatigue in operations personnel. Insight into these developments is provided in the context of the overall fatigue management plan. The field trials of the OptAlert(TM) system and how it assists in measuring fatigue is explained. The implications for individual operators and the context for a fleet wide approach to fatigue management is also discussed. Mt Keith has recently completed the second phase of trials with the result that this new and exciting technology is being considered for adoption globally across BHP BillitonÆs open pit mining operations.

The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold \lincs 1't% Ltd hati pla,xd all the major the gold producing areas adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie/Boulder under one management, enabling the development of the 'Super Pit'. This has facilitated the economic optimisation of the resource. Optimisation has been achieved by the timely collection and presentation of data and the use of these data to reduce costs and improve planning procedures.In particular the following issues have been addressed:ò the reduction of the impact of the mining activity on the adjacent urban population centre,ò implementation of safety procedures for mining through underground voids,ò the determination of the optimum bench height and mining method for ore production benches and blast design. This system is fundamentally based on maintaining a high degree of selectivity while achieving a balance of relatively low unit operating costs,ò assessment of the comparable benefits of contractor versus owner operated earth moving equipment, andò the development of effective ore body models, production reconciliation and the long term mine planning procedures to facilitate effective strategic planning.

Mineral sands are different to almost any other commodity; however, it shares similarities with other commodity types, such as the importance of quality constraints of iron ore and coal or the importance of physical properties of diamonds. The mineral sands industry consists of two principal product streams; titanium dioxide minerals û in the form of rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene, and zircon. The principal valuable heavy minerals (VHM) include ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon. Variations of other titanium minerals occur between the end members of ilmenite and rutile, including pseudo rutile and anatase. Most mineral sands deposits are found in unconsolidated fossil shorelines several hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres and occasionally hundreds of kilometres inland from the present coastline. Mineral sands orebodies essentially fall into two categories based on the mode of deposition: alluvial or aeolian. Alluvial deposits are further split into marine beach placers (or strandlines) and lacustrine heavy mineral (HM) accumulations. Exploration for mineral sands involves the positive identification of key criteria leading to the focus of exploratory surface sampling, augering and drilling. Assaying is primarily focused around determining the percentage of HM contained within a given sample. Other results of interest include clay fines, sand and oversize. Metallurgical/mineralogical assessment is often undertaken via laboratory scale bench tests that replicate the wet concentration and dry mill processing routes. The most critical component in resource assessment for mineral sands is about quantifying HM grade, then mineralogical assemblage and then quality of those mineral species. This will determine whether a mineral sand final product is marketable or not. Mining of mineral sands is conducted either wet or dry. Wet methods are generally preferred for large tonnage, unconsolidated and low clay orebodies. Where ground conditions are hard and orebodies are small, high grade and discontinuous, dry mining techniques are generally employed. Concentration of mineral sands from the primary ore is carried out in two sections; wet, utilising sizing and gravity differentiation between HM, VHM, clay and quartz, and dry, exploiting the magnetic, electrostatic and to a lesser extent specific gravity (SG) properties of the minerals of interest. Mineral sands exploration, mining and processing faces the same operating challenges as the rest of the resource sector. Added to this are the issues that are unique to mineral sands and to which the industry devotes considerable resources to developing solutions.

Chalcopyrite ore and converter slag treatment to produce copper concentrates is undertaken at the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. This concentrator was commissioned in May 1973, replacing the original No 1 Lead-Zinc Concentrator, for the processing of all chalcopyrite ore coming from Mount Isa Mine.Treatment of chalcopyrite ore at rates of up to 125 000 l/week is described here; the treatment of converter slag is described later.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Strength (RMS) classification systems for jointed rock masses are briefly reviewed, with particular reference to their use in slope stability studies. A correlation is provided between the results obtained from the two classifications and an equation is presented tentatively defining the RMR value for long-term stable slope angles. The validity of the equation is discussed in general terms in the context of slope stability problems commonly encountered in Western Australian open pit gold mines.

Sophisticated control systems require sufficient and reliable information from the process to be controlled. At the Pyhasalmi concentrator two novel measurements, a particle size indicator (PSI) and a mill level monitor (MLM), have led to significant progress in the control of the grinding circuit. The PSI and the MLM measurements have brought additional information from the process. The PSI has been an absolute prerequisite for determining the overall grinding circuit efficiency and the design of the integrated grinding and flotation control system. The MLM measurement has enabled studies on the volumetric filling of a mill to be utilised for maximising the mill throughput. The paper describes the operation principles of the PSI and MLM devices and the additional process information received. The results of a metallurgical pre-control audit are discussed and finally the design of the integrated control system is outlined.

The Ebor Volcano in northeastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19-20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2-19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (-48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at -19.0-19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichment of SiO2, F,FeO/MgO, alkalies and HFSE.

The Bau Goldfield lies in the southwestern corner of Sarawak in East Malaysia. Evidence of past mining in the form of open pits and adits can be found over an area of 250 sq kin, centred on the township of Bau. Chinese were mining gold in the district as early as 1820. The Bau Goldfield so far has produced approximately two million ounces of gold, from alluvial deposits and over 50 hard rock mines. The largest single producer was the Tai Parit mine (700 000 oz) which was operated by the Borneo Company from 1898 to 1921 and by a local Malaysian family from 1991 to early-1997. Over the past ten years, gold resources totalling around one nullion ounces have been delineated through systematic exploration using modern techniques, with the bulk of the resource hosted in two deposits (Jugan and Pejiru).Triassic to Jurassic andesitic volcanics and coeval intrusives are the oldest rocks that crop out in the Bau Goldfield. These igneous basement rocks are unconformably overlain by 500 m of late Jurassic, massive, micritic limestone which in turn is overlain by a 1500 in thick flysch sequence, composed mainly of shale. Basement rocks and limestone are exposed along the hinge of a ENE-striking anticline that passes through the Bau district (Bau Anticline). A NNE-striking belt of Miocene granodiorite porphyry stocks and dykes also passes through the Bau Goldfield. All of the known gold deposits lie within 5 km of this zone of intnisives, with a concentration of deposits at the intersection of the intrusive hell with the Rau Anticline.

Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018. In the raisebore industry, there are two known methods of removing large diameter reamer heads once the reaming of an underground shaft is complete: 1. Lower the reamer head to the base of the shaft and use a thermal lance to cut the drill string and drag the reamer away from the hole. This method exposes the person doing the job to falling rocks from the unsupported mineshaft, a hazard which is difficult to control and has caused fatalities. 2. Install breast plates in the backs above the reamer head at the top of the hole, and use air hoists to lift the reamer out of the hole. Steel beams are then placed across the hole which the reamer is lowered down onto, dragged forward away from the hole, disassembled, and removed. This method is time consuming, expensive, and complex in the controls required to ensure safe completion of the job At Carrapateena, the air hoist method had been successfully used, however, with the cost involved and the complexity of this process, development of an improved and fit for purpose reamer removal method was pursued. OZ Minerals collaborated with Pybar to develop an industry first application of Enerpac SL100 lift and shift technology; a track mounted system with hydraulic lifting units that can both lift the reamer out of the hole and tram it back along the tracks away from the hole. A key component of turning the idea into a reality was by establishing a truly collaborative relationship between client and contractor. When the SL100 mobile gantry arrived, it was set up in Adelaide and trialled with the whole raise bore crew attending the two-day workshop and risk assessment; a rare opportunity for drillers. There have now been five successful reamer removals with the SL100 mobile gantry at Carrapateena. It has proven to be an efficient process with the entire process from setup to demobilisation taking less than 48 hours. This new way has completely removed hot works and uncontrolled hazards from working at the bottom of a shaft. It has also saved the reamer stabiliser from being cut and thus wasted. Exposure to the open hole has been minimised significantly as assembly of the SL100 is completed well forward of the open hole. This new process is exponentially safer, quicker and cheaper.

The Water Act 2000 includes provisions to manage the take of overland flow water. Overland flow water is water that runs across the land after rainfall either before it enters a watercourse, after it leaves a watercourse as floodwater, or after it rises to the surface naturally from underground. To ensure adequate environmental flows and long-term security for water users, it is necessary to balance the amount of water taken as overland flow water and the amount left to flow into watercourses. A water resource plan made under the Water Act 2000 establishes the basis for the sustainable management of this type of water. Of the water resource plans that have been prepared for Queensland catchments, six include provisions to manage the take of overland flow water. This paper discusses some of the common features of these plans and the management approaches adopted. The paper identifies and explains key aspects of the Water Act 2000 framework for managing the take of overland flow water by the mining industry. In particular it explains key concepts of this framework, such as the ability to take overland flow water using existing works, uses of overland flow water that a water resource plan permits, situations where a specific entitlement under the Water Act 2000 is required, and the means for controlling works that take overland flow water. Future initiatives for the regulation and management of overland flow water are then identified and particular challenges for the mining industry associated with using overland flow water highlighted.

The first hydraulic roof supports were installed underground in 1950s and ever since that time engineering developments have improved the supports in many different ways. However. advances in three main areas, the roof support mechanical design, hydraulic engineering and electronics have ultimately led to the point where, 35 years after that first installation. automation has been achieved and is now commonplace.The history of roof support automation has involved the continual integration of high technology engineering. Thera ate further possibilities for the future which combine to give some idea of the likelihood of there ultimately being a completely manless face.

A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

Many changes have occurred in the world market for manganese over the last five years. Among these, the emergence of divided steel processes for the hot metal refining of pig iron is affecting the use of both ferruginous manganese ore and ferro manganese, at this stage particularly in the Japanese steel industry. Subsequent demand for higher quality manganese materials is promoting the use of thermally beneficiated products such as sinter. In addition, many processes are being developed for the direct smelting of fine manganese ores, of which plasma technology is the most advanced. Cost pressures and product quality requirements are encouraging pre- viously self sufficient countries such as The People's Republic of China and the USSR to import high grade manganese ores to supplement indigenous lower quality supplies. At the same time, Brazil has been provided with the impetus to convert its substantial reserves of ore to value added products.

Time and time again history shows us that mine closures are sustainability failures. Mine operators do not know how to turn the mine closure into an asset and communities around the mine do not know how to plan or what to implement to be sustainable when the mine needs to close. If we want to achieve sustainability when we close a mine, we generally need to consider what economic activity we will have to create leading up to the mine closure to ensure that the communities remaining in the area are not worse off after mining than before. There is not one silver bullet solution to mine closure, as all mines are affected by different environmental and socio-economic conditions. That is one of the reasons why mine closure is so difficult.Effective stakeholder engagement is the nucleus around which sustainability is built. Achieving sustainability as part of mine closure means not only a self-sufficient community, but also could lead to transformation of that asset.A key issue is that neighbouring communities become completely reliant on the mine. The mine has influenced the economic, environmental and social aspects of the community and with no alternative economic sources. The community and municipality will struggle with capacity to maintain infrastructure, services and jobs. This not only impacts the mine workers and their families but also other businesses and people in the town that make a living by servicing the needs of the workers and their families. Social problems associated with a mining operations and closures need to be considered. The misuse of alcohol, domestic violence, breakdown in law and order, economic and health issues all have a severe influence. Families often need to relocate from the mining town to find work. The chemical oxidation kinetics of sphalerite by Fe(III) was studied at various temperatures and size fractions in sulphate media. The kinetics of Zn extraction followed a pore diffusion control mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 54-58 kJ mole. This figure, although high for a pore diffusion control process, is consistent with other studies carried out in sulphate media. An empirical statistical model, relating the extraction time to % Zn extraction, average particle size and temperature, is described by log 1 = 12.22 - 0.017% Ext. - 1.76 log D Av t - 2954 T Parallel studies were also carried out investigating the biological oxidation of sphalerite utilizing the acidophilic autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus Ferroxidans. The effect of such kinetic parameters as pulp density, particle size and Fe(III) on bacterial growth rate and consequently zinc extraction rate, were studied and where appropriate, optimum conditions for bacterial growth were specified. Based on the results of chemical and biological leaching studies, it was apparent that rapid zinc extraction from sphalerite was predominently due to oxidation by Fe(III). The biological oxidation process catalyses the oxidation and regeneration of Fe(III). The proposed combined chemical-biological leach system was simulated in semi continuous fashion. Blast movement measurement is a key component of grade control, enabling mines to carry all of the precision involved in locating ore blocks, through a chaotic blast, to production. A monitoring system was developed about ten years ago so that mine operation personnel can measure three dimensional movement in every production blast. Research has shown that blast movement is always highly variable with a significant non-deterministic component. The consequence is that modelling will be inaccurate and therefore optimal ore recovery can only be achieved by direct measurement of blast movement.Three dimensional movement vectors are measured at discrete locations in the blast. If blast movement is only measured at one location in a blast pattern, data is severely limited and has all of the inherent inaccuracies of modelling a variable population. It is intuitive that the accuracy of defining the post-blast ore block mark-ups are proportional to the number of movement measurement locations, however increasing the number of monitoring locations causes increases to the direct operating costs of the mine.A cost-benefit analysis is used to explore the optimal number of monitoring locations. One of the biggest drawbacks of deciding upon a heap leach method of treating gold ore is the risk associated with the full-scale production heaps not performing as predicted by the testwork. This paper examines the key decisions that are taken in the design of a heap leach project, and suggests ways in which exposure to these risks can be minimised. It also looks at monitoring techniques to give early warning of problems and possible remedial actions.

The Mt Leyshon Volcanic Complex lies 24 kilometres south-west of Charters Towers and is part of a major continental volcano-plutonic province of Permo-Carboniferous age in north-east Queensland.The volcanic complex is located on the contact between Cape River Beds of Cambrian age and the Ordovician Ravenswood Granodiorite Complex. The emplacement of the complex appears to have been structurally controlled and is at the intersection of major north-east and minor north-west trending lineaments. The gold mineralisation occurs in the form of cavity coatings, matrix replacement, disseminations, and vein and fracture fillings containing quartz, chlorite, carbonate, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena in various volcanic breccias and rhyolitic intrusives. The current published mineable ore reserves, calculated by Noranda Australia Limited, are 6.3 million tonnes of 1.8 grams per tonne gold and 4.8 grams per tonne silver. The orebody is open at depth, and in all directions except north where it abuts the granodiorite.
