"The critical importance of tap-hole design and management for furnace performance and longevity is explored through examining some of the specific matte, metal, and slag tapping requirements of non-ferrous copper blister and matte converting and smelting, ferroalloy smelting, and ironmaking systems. Process conditions and productivity requirements and their influence on tapping are reviewed for these different pyrometallurgical systems. Some critical aspects of the evolution of tap-hole design to meet the diverging process and tapping duties are examined. Differences and similarities in tapping practices and tap-hole management are reviewed. Finally, core aspects of tap-hole equipment and maintenance are identified – aspects that are considered important for securing improved tap-hole performance and life, so pivotal to superior furnace smelting performance. IntroductionThe sheer diversity of tapping configurations used on industrial pyrometallurgical operations is at first bewildering. They range from historical tilting furnaces without tapholes to modern eccentric bottom tapping (EBT) tilting and/or bottom slide-gate electric arc furnaces; to classical single tap-hole multiphase tapping (e.g. metal/matte and slag); to dedicated phase tap-holes (e.g. dedicated metal/matte-only and slag-only); to dedicated phase multiple tap-hole configurations (up to eight metal/matte-only tap-holes and six slag-only tap-holes); to more esoteric metal/matte-only siphons and slag overflow skimming, e.g. Mitsubishi Continuous Process (Matsutani, n.d.). This can be further complicated by periodic batch tapping; consecutive tapping on a given taphole; alternating tap-hole tapping practice; near-continuous slag-only tapping, with discrete batch matte/metal tapping on higher productivity, but low metal/matte fall (<20% by mass feed) Co and Ni ferroalloy and platinum group metal (PGM) matte furnaces; near-continuous tapping through batch tapping of individual tap-holes that are opened consecutively (Tanzil et al., 2001; Post et al., 2003); to fully continuous tapping on coupled multi-furnace cascades (Matsutani, n.d.)."

Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

"The kinetics of MnO and SiO2 reduction in SiMn slags based on Assmang/Comilog ore and HCFeMn (highcarbon ferromanganese) slag were investigated between 1500 and 1650°C under a CO atmosphere. The results showed that charges containing HCFeMn slag had relatively faster reduction rates than those without. The difference in the driving force for MnO reduction was insignificant among the SiMn slags at 1500°C, which implies a low contribution of the driving force for reduction rate. The slag viscosities were also rather similar, around 1 poise at 1500°C, which could not explain the different reduction rates. Instead, the different charges containing various sulphur contents are believed to give rise to the varying reduction rates. The estimated activation energies for MnO reduction were around 500–920 kJ/mol for charges containing HCFeMn slag, and between 250–300 kJ/mol for those without. Based on the estimated kinetic parameters, the considered rate models were able to describe the reduction of MnO and SiO2 in SiMn slags between 1500 and 1650°C. IntroductionManganese ferroalloys such as ferromanganese (FeMn) and silicomanganese (SiMn) are important ingredients in steel production due to the beneficial effects of manganese on the physical properties of steel. Mn enhances the strength, toughness, and hardness of steel products, and both Mn and Si are used as deoxidizers to prevent the development of porous structures (International Manganese Institute, 2014; Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007; Subramanyam, Swansiger, and Avery, 1990; Tomota et al., 1987).The thermodynamic background of manganese ferroalloys is well established (Olsen, Tangstad and Lindstad, 2007), but kinetic information is rather scarce, especially for the SiMn process (Tranell et al., 2007; Tore-Andre Skjervheim, 1994). The absence of kinetic information makes it more difficult to understand the reduction mechanisms of MnO and SiO2. It is not clear how different raw materials affect the SiMn process. The aim of this paper was to establish if mineral resource scarcity is a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The project objectives were achieved by investigating economically viable, and critical or strategic minerals remaining in South Africa, as well as resource scarcity, as a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The study found that some minerals in South Africa, such as iron ore, lead, manganese, gold, and cobalt have less than 50 years of economically viable mining remaining. At least 18 minerals can be classified indicatively as critical or strategic: aggregates, bauxite, chromite, cobalt, copper, gold, graphite, iron, limestone, lithium, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, platinum group metals, rare earth elements, silver, titanium, and vanadium. The classification was based on the minerals’ economic importance, supply risk, and potential use in the development and manufacturing of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that the scarcity of mineral resources is a critical driver for the country to transition to a circular economy. Other identified drivers include socio-economic factors, climate change commitments, and business objectives. All minerals are non-renewable resources and at risk of depletion, therefore sustainable extraction and use are critical. Priority should be directed at investigating circular economy opportunities and substitutes for commodities at risk of being depleted within the next 50 years. There is an opportunity for South Africa to transition from a minerals export-based model to one that promotes local mineral beneficiation and manufacturing of end products.

Growing global concern over the impacts of climate change, attributable largely to fossil fuel energy sources, has led to the widely shared goal for a ‘just transition’ to cleaner energy and reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels. As the world’s 14th biggest CO2 emitter and being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, South Africa must embark on a just transition pathway. This paper reviews expected coal mine closures and associated community vulnerabilities and local governance challenges in South Africa. Decommissioning schedules for all coal-fired power stations and operating coal mines are plotted, and 69 mining host communities and 21 municipalities are mapped, classified, and described. Community socio-economic profiles are measured using a set of SDG indicators and census data and municipalities assessed through financial audits. Our research shows that five coal-fired power plants (8.9 GW) and 15 coal mines (29.5 Mt/a) will probably close by 2030, and a further four plants (14 GW) and 23 mines (106 Mt/a) by 2040. Thus, the shift to cleaner energy will likely occur without the premature closures implied by the just transition. The impact of mine closure on the 2.5 million residents of host communities will be significant, particularly as levels of income, employment, and education are already very low and many municipalities are in financial distress. The South African approach to the just transition needs to take local realities into account and the narrative must support an effective transition that does not undermine energy security and economic growth.

Tanzania is a country with a variety of mineral deposits, including metallic minerals, gemstones, mineral fuels, industrial minerals, and critical minerals. This study provides an overview of mining legal framework, mineral occurrence and production, challenges in the mining sector, and government initiatives. The aim is to demonstrate the development of the mining sector in Tanzania and explore the potential for further mining investment in the country. The mineral production data showed generally increasing trends over the years, for example, gold production increased from 42 tonnes in 2018/2019 to around 50 tonnes in 2023/2024. Despite the growth, the mining sector encounters several challenges, including a lack of detailed geological information on mineral deposits, inadequate infrastructures in some remote mining sites, the existence of informal artisanal miners, and mineral smuggling. The Tanzanian government has introduced several initiatives to address these challenges, including carrying out the highresolution airborne geophysical survey to increase geological information in some areas, the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining, establishing mineral markets to combat mineral smuggling, and encouraging mineral value addition within the country.

At a time of resource consumption, it is important to study the chemical composition of mining and metallurgical wastes to prevent the dissipative loss of metals and metalloids from the mining value chain. In particular, the recovery of critical elements from wastes is an option to increase the resources of such materials that are economically significant and have an overall supply risk. In this paper we report on the chemical composition, in particular the critical element content, of granulated slag originating from historical smelting activities in the Tsumeb area, Namibia. Laboratory-based inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses as well as portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) demonstrate that the slags are on average enriched in base metals (Cu 0.7 wt%, Pb 2.7 wt%, Zn 4.7 wt%), trace metals and metalloids (Cd approx. 50 mg/kg, Mo approx. 910 mg/kg) as well as critical elements (As approx. 6300 mg/kg, Bi approx. 3 mg/kg, Co approx. 200 mg/kg, Ga approx. 100 mg/kg, In approx. 9 mg/kg, Sb approx. 470 mg/kg). While metals and metalloids such as As, Mo and Pb can be determined reliably using pXRF instruments, the technique has inherent limitations in evaluating the contents of certain critical elements (Ga, Sb). However, there are positive correlations between the As, Mo, and Pb contents determined by pXRF and the Ga and Sb contents obtained through ICP-MS and XRF. Thus, quantitative pXRF analysis for As, Mo, and Pb allows calculation of Ga and Sb abundances in the slags. This work demonstrates that pXRF analysers are a valuable tool to screen smelting slags for their chemical composition and to predict the likely contents of critical elements.

The Conference Minerals & Materials &apos;96 was held in Somerset West, South Africa, from 31st July to 2nd August, 1996. It was organized by the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, the Cape Technikon, and the Western Cape Branch of The South African institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The three-day Conference was attended by 180 delegates, representing countries such as Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The programme and associated exhibition were well organized, and each of the delegates received two volumes of proceedings containing the 77 papers presented at the Conference.

Advanced process and equipment analytics have been around for a while. However, with accessible IT infrastructure and site maturity, it is possible to analyse, monitor, and control processing plants and equipment easily. These various disparate systems provide different reports requiring the involvement of various personnel and attention to different reporting platforms. For efficient harnessing of the systems? capabilities, as well as effective improvement and monitoring of process and equipment, a single point of entry is required. A process and equipment optimization solution was required at a concentrator in South Africa, focussing on the product stream of platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate from the UG2 Reef. The investigation of data to identify strategies for optimization was required to allow visibility into plant operations to guide operators, an easier method to identify process loop problems, identification of imminent equipment failures, and advanced process control to optimize throughput and stability. A collaborative effort between the client and General Electric Intelligent Platforms (GEIP) investigated data-driven solutions to each of the problems. With the focus on process optimization and asset monitoring, as well as equipment monitoring, a combination of approaches was utilized to address the various problem areas that were identified. Each was implemented separately in the control layer of the plant IT infrastructure. The integration was done in a centralized web-based reporting tool that integrated the detailed results from the various solutions. On the process control side, monitoring of control loops was included by calculating performance statistics that were reported daily to identify sub-optimally performing control loops and indicating potential problems. The advanced process control solution for this site includes a surge tank controller, stabilizing flow through the flotation banks, and preventing the surge tank from overflowing or running empty. Equipment monitoring was investigated, for preventative maintenance, by making use of statistical data models to indicate imminent equipment failure. These predicted alarm events included the cause for failure, drilling down, and allowing focus on a specific variable for preventative action. The results included a more stable flow through the mill, with fewer stoppages due to surge tank overflows or running empty. The causes for process drift could be identified and operators could react early. Alarms warning of equipment failure 2½ and 4 months in advance were identified in an offline analysis.

"SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

South Africa is a leading player in the international ferro alloys industry. Historical factors that have contributed to this dominant position include an abundance of natural resources and relatively low cost electricity. A number of relatively recent developments are potentially threatening this position. These include new legislation affecting the mining and minerals industry, a shortage of some types of suitable reductants, depletion of surplus electricity generation capacity with resultant threat of real escalation of electricity prices and pressure resulting from the recent strengthening of the South African Rand. The industry is addressing these challenges in a number of ways to ensure long-term viability. Some of these measures include investments in more efficient technologies that have economy of scale benefits and are less dependent on expensive reductants and electricity. Local macro-economic impacts include new legislation regarding ownership of enter-prises, mineral rights and royalties on mineral sales, development plans for port and rail infrastructure, as well as initiatives to expand electricity generation and coke production capacity. The fundamentals for being a successful ferro alloy producer are still largely in place for South African producers. Therefore the South African ferro alloy industry will remain competitive and is well placed for continued growth in line with the international growth in ferro alloy demand. The industry should emerge leaner, more efficient and ready to respond to any future demands of the industry. This paper will cover the present status of the industry, the factors that are impacting thereon and a view on its future outlook.

Oil, coal, and gas account for approximately 80% of global primary energy, but only a portion of total airborne CO2 eq (approx. 35% at GWP20 to 65% at GWP100), even though they account for 95% of total measured CO2 emissions. The benefits of these energy sources, as well as their related costs, are not all incorporated in current energy policy discussions. Global greenhouse gas policies must include documented changes in measured airborne CO2 eq to avoid spending large amounts of public funds on ineffective or sub-optimal policies. The authors examined airborne CO2, which is less than half of emitted CO2, as well as reported CH4 emissions and the global warming potential of CH4 as published by the IPCC for coal and natural gas. The surprising conclusion is that surfaced-mined coal appears ‘better for the climate’ than the average natural gas, and all coal appears beneficial over LNG. Therefore, current CO2-only reduction policies and CO2 taxes are leading to unintended consequences and the switch from coal to natural gas, especially LNG, will not have the desired impact of reducing predicted future global warming; in fact, quite the contrary. A large portion of anthropogenic global warming is attributed by the IPCC and IEA to CH4, but it must be noted that CH4 emissions from natural sources and from agriculture account for approximately 40% and 25% of annual global CH4 emissions respectively. Energy accounts for about 20% of documented CH4 emissions. CO2 contributes only approximately 35% of annual airborne anthropogenic GHG emissions after accounting for CH4, over a 20-year horizon. At a 100-year horizon, the contribution of CO2 increases to approximately 60%. Energy policies that do not consider all GHG emissions along the entire value chain will lead to undesired economic and environmental distortions. All carbon taxation and CO2 pricing schemes are incorrect and need to be revised. At IPCC’s GWP20 an approximately 2%1 higher loss of CH4 across the value chain prior to combustion of natural gas versus coal will lead to ‘climate parity’ of coal with natural gas. According to public data, natural gas value chains have high CH4 and undocumented CO2 losses. On a global average, using only IEA-documented CH4 data, natural gas emits approximately 15% more CO2 eq than surface-mined coal, over a 20-year horizon. This difference will increase as the use of shale gas and LNG expands. Investors should support all energy systems in a manner that avoids an energy crisis, including intermittent renewable energy systems where they make sense. If CO2 emissions need to be reduced, one of the most effective ways would be to install ultra-supercritical power plants with CCUS technology. However, the undisputed benefits of increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere because of its promotion of photosynthesis and plant growth effects (fertilization) need to be considered in energy policy decisions as well. The authors suggest that future research and development should concentrate on reducing net emissions from fossil fuel power plants and providing cost-effective and reliable new conventional power generation capacity, utilizing clean coal and clean natural gas technology.

Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly &apos;safe&apos; compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

Hawkins* The thesis of the paper is a very interesting one, but, before it is used as the basis of any firm proposals to restructure the mining industry, which changes may be irreversible, one should be very sure that the basis of the calculations is sound. Contribution by P. J. Niewenhuizen* The hypothesis advanced by Mr Monro that the demonetization of gold in August 1971 introduced a major new policy variable, namely the supply-pricejdemand-price relationships, into the decision making process touches on a matter that has never really been given serious thought by the industry. Contribution by B. G. Kingsman* As a co-worker on the development of an econometric model for supply and demand in the world gold market with Mr H. L. Monro, it would perhaps be useful for me to make some comments on the various points raised in the discussions on his paper.

Derelict and ownerless (D&O) mines in South Africa have been an ongoing concern for over a decade. While some progress has been made to rehabilitate D&O asbestos sites, significant work remains, exacerbated by the growth in illegal mining. There are concerns regarding the accuracy and transparency of the D&O database, lack of oversight, and constrained funding, and the government is increasingly looking to the private sector to fund rehabilitation. Given these challenges, a new, sustainable approach to D&O sites in South Africa is needed to bring clarity and transparency to the process, recognise responsibilities and promote partnerships, and explore economic opportunities at D&O sites to reduce the financial liability and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals. This article has three components: i) reviews of international D&O good practices; ii) it analyses South Africa’s current approach and the D&O sites; and iii) proposes a D&O framework that addresses data, risk ratings, responsibilities and rehabilitation, economic opportunities, and stakeholder engagement. The study finds that the majority of the 6,100 so-called abandoned D&O mines are quarries and mine site features, 16% are operational, at least 11% have owners, and only 752 (12%) require rehabilitation. The framework aims to bring clarity and fairness to decision-making and to assign risk and responsibility for rehabilitation and seeks to incorporate economic opportunities to reduce the financial burden of rehabilitation, create jobs for local communities, and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals for the clean energy transition.

"When considered collectively, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves are arguably a key asset for any mining company. Mineral Reserves are the economically mineable portions of Mineral Resources. They therefore provide a good indication of the economic prospects in the short to medium term and associated non-financial impairments for mining companies, hence a focus on Mineral Reserves. An assessment of modifying factors for converting Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves revealed that Mineral Reserves were most sensitive to long-term commodity prices, hence the focus on long-term commodity prices. The justification for selecting gold and platinum mines is that they collectively make a significant contribution to South Africa’s earnings from mining.The introduction of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) in 2000 informed the basis for analysing long-term commodity price assumptions for major South African gold and platinum mining companies between 2000 and 2016. The analysis revealed that the least number of non-financial impairments occurred when long-term commodity prices were within ±5% of spot prices. This finding suggests that this range is the ideal range for long-term commodity price assumptions to improve confidence in Mineral Reserve declarations and minimize impairments. Introduction The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) defines a Mineral Resource as ‘a concentration or occurrence of solid material of economic interest in or on the Earth’s crust in such form, grade or quality and quantity that there are reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 18). Mineral Resources are categorized according to increasing levels of geoscientific confidence or knowledge, from Inferred to Indicated and lastly, Measured categories. The SAMREC Code defines a Mineral Reserve as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resource’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 25). In some of the other reporting codes such as the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code), a Mineral Reserve is synonymous with an Ore Reserve. The conversion of Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves involves applying modifying factors, which are non-resource considerations. The modifying factors used in the Mineral Reserve estimation process include mining, metallurgical, processing, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental factors. Each of these modifying factors consists of several components which require due consideration in the estimation of Mineral Reserves. Since the early 1970s, Korea has constructed many large-scale tunnels and underground storage caverns in response to the rapid industrial development. The rock mechanics engineers have accumulated valuable experiences in the area of underground space technologies. But they still face technical challenges in environmental and safety aspects. To discuss those challenges in Korea, a brief engineering description of underground space projects including oil and gas storage, food storage, pumped storage power plant, transportation tunnels, waterway tunnels, and radioactive waste disposal is presented. Mechanical and hydrological stability analyses of the storage caverns in Korea are also introduced. Depuis le début des années soixante-dix, le développement industriel rapide en Corée a entraîné la construction de nombreuses galeries et cavernes de stockage souterraines. Les ingénieurs de mécanique minière ont donc accumulé des expériences précieuses dans le domaine de la technologie de l’espace souterrain. Cependant, ils font toujours face à de nombreux défis techniques en ce qui concerne les aspects de l’environnement et de la sécurité. Pour présenter ces défis en Corée, l’étude présente décrit les projets d’espace souterrain, y compris le stockage de pétrole et de gaz, de nourriture, centrales de stockage pompé, tunnels de transport, tunnels navigables, et évacuation des déchets radioactifs. Des analyses de stabilité mécanique et hydrologique des cavernes de stockage en Corée sont aussi présentées. Mechanische und hydrologische Stabilitätsanalysen derLagerungsräume in Korea werden ebenfalls dargestellt.
