A small displacement-small strain finite element technique utilizing the constant strain triangle and incremental constitutive equations for elastic-plastic media that are nonhardening and obey a Coulomb yield condition has been applied to the analysis of gravity flow initiation in a V-shaped hopper containing a powder under lunar environmental conditions. Three methods of loading were examined. Of the three, the method of computing the initial state of stress in a filled hopper prior to drawdown by adding material to the hopper layer-by-layer is superior (as expected). Results of the analysis of a typical hopper problem show that the initial state of stress, the elastic moduli, and the strength parameters have an important influence on material response subsequent to the opening of the hopper outlet.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke; (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in this county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Perry County, Ky.

For the past three or four years attention has been attracted to the deposits of lead vanadate in the Goodsprings , Nevada , district . Some ore running as high as 9 per cent 205 has been produced , but most of it runs from 0.5 to 3 per cent . Only a little ore , and that of the richer sort , has been shipped , since the low- grade ore will not stend the cost of shipment and no concentration mill has been available . Preliminary experiments indicate that chemical treatment of the low- grade ore without concentration is not feasible . Its treatment therefore involves two distinct problems ; first , mechanical concentration ; and second , a smelting or chemical treatment to obtain the lead and vanadium in marketable form . Upon this basis the work has been conducted . The writer wishes to acknowledge the excellent work done by J. T. Norton and Virgil Miller on table concentration and by J. E. Conley , who suggested and did preliminary work on the direct smelting method . Many helpful suggestions were received from Dr. S. C. Lind and John Gross of the Bureau of Mines . "The basic population balance models for agglomeration processes are reviewed and procedures are described for extending their applicability to systems with size-dependent rate constants and to the formation and growth of porous agglomerates from rigid, solid particles. Simplified procedures for the further extension of the models to include simultaneous agglomerate growth and breakage arc also described. IntroductionThe association of small particles into clusters or agglomerates is a significant factor in many facets of particle processing. Agglomeration processes are widely used to facilitate handling, storage and utilization of fine powders. Processes such as coagulation or flocculation are used to aid solid-fluid separation in dispersed particulate systems. Agglomeration also occurs as an accompaniment, often unwanted, to other particulate processing operations such as fine grinding, mixing and blending, transport and flow.Reliable agglomeration models are needed for improved understanding of the processes in general and of the complex role of numerous, interacting variables as well as for direct application to the design and control of industrial processes such as flocculation, granulation and pelletization. Ideally, the models should account for the primary forces responsible for agglomerate ·formation and growth, the effects of external forces on process dynamics, the development of agglomerate structure and its role in the process itself, and the effects of concurrent processes such as structure modification (e.g. compaction) and agglomerate breakage or degradation.In its most general form, the process of agglomeration involves taking discrete, independent particles, bringing them into contact with one another, promoting (or allowing) interparticle adhesion to occur and then causing structure rearrangement, usually under the action of external forces. The relative importance of these steps varies with the nature of the particulate system being agglomerated and with the kinds of agglomerates being produced. Coagulation or flocculation of particles dispersed in fluids is generally dominated by the contact and adhesion steps. In the granulation of powders, on the other hand, particles are already in contact so that structure rearrangement is the principal step."

An accelerated and coordinated program of coal research is believed by many to be a necessary step in assuring coal's proper position in the expanding energy market. The President's Advisory Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy, for example, made the following recommendation: We recognize that coal is a great national asset and endorse a cooperative study to determine what research and development could be undertaken. The coal industry and both Federal and State Governments should participate in this study and its costs. Representatives of the coal industry have agreed that such a study should be initiated. Accordingly, Felix E. Wormser, Assistant Secretary - Mineral Resources, United States Department of the Interior, requested the Bureau of Mines and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to conduct a survey of current research on bituminous coal. In addition to this survey, studies were made to determine research projects that would be of value to the coal industry.

The Bureau of Mines two-stage coal-pyrite flotation process was modified to provide a more concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow which could be dewatered economically by filtration or centrifugation. This was accomplished by doing the first-stage coal flotation step in the conventional manner with a slurry of about 8 percent solids, but running the second-stage pyrite Flotation step with undiluted coal froth concentrate containing about 25 percent solids. The final clean coal underflow produced by the new technique contained between 26 and 30 percent solids; this pulp was sufficiently concentrated to be filtered industrially without further thickening. Sulfur removal was equal to that obtained using dilute second-stage pulp,

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments in the intermediate-scale fire tunnel to assess the influence of air velocity on the gas production and smoke characteristics during smoldering and flaming combustion of Pittsburgh seam coal and its impact on the detection of the combustion products. On-line determinations of mass and number of smoke particles, light transmission, and various gas concentrations were made. From these experimental values, generation rates, heat-release rates, production constants, particle sizes, obscuration rates, and optical densities were calculated. Ventilation has a direct effect on fire detection and development. The results indicate that, in general, increased air velocity lengthened the onset of smoke and flaming ignition, increased the fire intensity, but decreased the gas and smoke concentrations. Increased air velocity also lengthened the response times of all the fire sensors tested. Rapid and reliable detector response at this most crucial stage of fire development can increase the possibility that appropriate miner response (fire suppression tactics or evacuation) can be completed before toxic smoke spreads throughout the mine.

Measures that were taken to eliminate noise resulting from explosives work at the Bureau of Mines facility at Bruceton , Pa . , are described . A method for monitoring sound transmission characteristics of the atmosphere and control of the explosives testing is presented as a noise control measure that offered partial relief during the period in which the modifications were made . Design details of the replacement gallery , used for permissibility testing of explosives , and the modifications of four types of bombproofs are given . Operation of the closed facilities are completely satisfactory , and the noise problem has been entirely eliminated .

Umiat field contains the largest accumulation of oil discovered so far in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in Arctic Alaska. The Umiat anticline was tested with 11 wells; 6 produced oil in varying quantities. Behavior of the wells during testing was unpredictable. For example, one well was abandoned as a dry hole after all tests failed to recover any oil, yet an offset well, only 200 feet from the dry hole, produced 400 barrels of oil a day. The main oil reservoirs are less than 1,000 feet deep and are in the permanently frozen zone (permafrost). Reservoir pressures are low, and most primary production will be by expansion of gas-in-solution in the oil. Because of the unusual reservoir conditions and the difficulties encountered in drilling and completing the wells, the Department of the Navy asked the Federal Bureau of Mines to make laboratory studies of the reservoir sand to determine the cause of well plugging and to provide laboratory information, to be used as an aid in estimating oil recovery from frozen reservoir rocks under solution-gas expansion from low-saturation pressure conditions.

"INTRODUCTION At the request of Elmer Burch, of Taos, N. Mex., the Apache mica mine was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. As the result of this examination, the Bureau of Mines proposed to extend an adit to the projection of the mica-bearing dike. The Federal Geological Survey then prepared a topographic and geologic map of the property. This information and consultations with members of the Survey 3/ assisted in determining the course and extent of the exploratory work. The author supervised the work, which was done from January to May 1944.Title to the property was in litigation during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation. Conrad Johnson, of La Madera, N. Mex., was contesting the valley of Burch's claim location covering the Apache mine. Johnson was a prior claimant. A map made during mining operations prior to 1929, showing all mine workings, was in the possession of Johnson, but he would not produce it for inspection as long as his title to the property was in doubt. The course of the adit extension was therefore controlled by the best information and judgment otherwise obtainable."

The following information on accidents in Alabama during 1930 was compiled from data obtained from the companies represented in a course on accident prevention given by the United States Bureau of Mines in Birmingham. These mines produced nearly three-quarters of the tonnage of that State for the year, and included most of the larger operations in the district. The figures are probably representative of the mines which are doing recognized safety work, and are better than the average for all the mines in Alabama. Table 1 lists the days lost in accordance with the weights given to fatalities and permanent disabilities, part and total, which is the scale used in the National Safety Com¬ petition for Mines, conducted by this bureau. By way of explanation, temporary disabilities are weighted according to actual number of calendar days of disability, including Sundays and holidays — that is, all days are counted except the day of accident and day of employee's ability to return to duty. Hernia is classed as a temporary disability to be charged with the actual number of calendar days during which the employee was unable to work. Table 2 gives the number of accidents and the days lost from each cause at 45 coal mines and 7 iron ore mines, also the average frequency and severity rates.

"The wetting behavior of coal has been determined in the presence of nonyl and octyl series of nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy groups of different sizes. The wetting behavior was determined by a modified Walker technique and contact angle measurements. The results show that the wetting rate of coal varies with coal rank, structure of the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. A close relationship has been observed between the wetting rates and the short-time advancing contact angles.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants are used in many applications to improve wettability of solids. They can be used as dispersing agents [ 1 ] or dust suppressants [ 2-5] and to control the flotation, flocculation, filtration and, flowability of particulates. This study was undertaken to study the effect of a series of nonionic surfactants on the wetting behavior of coal. Two series of surfactants, namely, ethoxylated nonyl and octyl phenols were used. The nonyl phenol series con tains a linear hydrocarbon chain containing nine carbon atoms (CH3 ( CH2 )8-C6H4- ( OC2H4 ) n, where n is the number of ethoxy groups) . The octyl phenol series contains a branched hydrocarbon chain containing eight' carbon atoms ( ( CH3 ) 3CCH2C ( CH3) 2-C6H4- ( OC2H4 ) n ).Initial wetting rates — modified Walker techniqueWalker et al. [ 6 ] developed a sink test to determine the wettability of coal particles. In this technique, coal particles are dropped individually onto the surface of surfactant solutions of different concentrations, and the most dilute concentration in which coal would sink ""instantaneously"" is determine& This technique is a variation of a procedure initially developed by Draves and Clarkson [ 7 ] to determine the effect of surfactants on wettability of cotton fibers."

The floor of Shady Valley, Johnson County, Tenn., is underlain by the Shady dolomite formation. In places the residual clay derived from this formation contains considerable manganese oxides. Nine properties in Shady Valley and two in Doe Valley were prospected by the Bureau of Mines from January 1943 to April 1943. The results obtained indicate that the ore bodies are small and spotty and, that the ore is not well-adapted to gravity concentration. The work of the Bureau was confined to the open end of the valley. One mile northeast of the Ham Greer property, Beaverdam Creek enters a rocky gorge, and it was believed that the few prospects in this area were of secondary impor-tance and, owing to the steep slope and general roughness of the terrain, that exploration with the rite', bucket-drill would be impracticable. A total of 4,398.5 feet was drilled in 131 holes. In addition, 235 lineal feet of bulldozer trenches were cut and 4.5 feet of test pits were sunk. The following nine properties were explored in Shady Valley: Bentley, Walker, Blevins, Scott, North Ham Greer, South Ham Greer, Lipford, Blackburn, and Steagall In Doe Valley, the Gerd Shoun and Brookshire properties were explored.

"One of the proposed mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of silicosis is that inhaled silica dust activates a ""respiratory burst"" in pulmonary phagocytes, such as macrophages and neutrophils. This increase in oxidative metabolism results in enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species which if produced in excess, would overwhelm natural defense mechanisms and cause damage to the lung parenchyma. This damage would then result in scarring, fibrosis, and decreased gas exchange.Weiss and LoBuglio' have listed several oxygen species produced by phagocytes which may be involved in cellular injury. These oxidants include superoxide anion, hydrogen, peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and hypochlorous acid. Superoxide anion (0;) is generated from molecular oxygen by the plasma membrane bound enzyme NADPH oxidase according to the following reaction:Once generated, superoxide anion can form hydrogen peroxide:In the presence of myeloperoxidase and halide, hydrogen peroxide can form hypochlorous acid:Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide can also form highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals can be generated slowly by the Haber-Weiss reaction:In addition. hydroxyl radical production can be catalyzed via the Fenton reaction:Hydroxyl radicals can also be generated from the reaction of superoxide and hypochlorous acid as follows:Recent investigations suggest that, in addition to the reactive oxygen species discussed above, nitric oxide may be a potential mediator of silica-induced toxicity.2-4 Nitric oxide (NO') can be generated by the cytosolic enzyme nitric oxide synthase according to the following reaction:NO synthase exists in two forms. i.e.. a constitutive. Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent form and an inducible. Ca2+-calmodulin-independent form. In pulmonary phagocytes. the activity of the constitutive form of NO synthase is low. However. NO synthase can be induced in macrophages and neutrophils by a variety of stimulants such as lipopolysaccharide. interferon y. chemotactic peptide, platelet activating factor, or leukotriene B4.3.5Once generated. nitric oxide can combine with superoxide anion to form peroxynitrite as follows:Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidizing agent. In addition, peroxynitrite can form peroxynitrous acid. which in turn can produce hydroxyl radical and nitrogen dioxide (all of which exhibit strong oxidizing potential) by the following reactions:Oxygen metabolites have been shown to cause lung damage in vivo.6 Such damage includes edema. leakiness of the alveolar endothelial/epithelial barriers, and airway constriction.7 Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been associated with membrane damage and cell lysis.8 These oxidants have also been associated with alteration of cytoskeletal structures at cell-cell junctions and elevation of transepithelial conductance in cultured monolayers.9 Macrophages or neutrophils can be stimulated by bacteria or phorbol myristate acetate to produce sufficient oxidant levels to lyse lymphoma cells.10 This cell killing is inhibited by catalase but is unaffected by superoxide dismutase. hydroxyl radical scavengers. or azide. i.e., an inhibitor of peroxidase. This implicates hydrogen peroxide as the active oxidant. Similarly. Weiss et al.11 have reported that hydrogen peroxide is critical in the death of cultured endothelial cells due to neutrophil activation. In addition. hydroxyl radicals generated by monocytes have been associated with cell injury.12 Lastly. peroxynitrite has been shown to oxidize sulfhydryl groups and to inactivate proteinase inhibitor making the lung more susceptible to damage caused by phagocytotic enzymes.' Therefore. a strong case can be made that activated pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils are capable of causing oxidant injury. This chapter presents in vitro and in vivo data indicating that silica is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species from these pulmonary phagocytes."

Of the sand and miscellaneous silica produced in the United States , ordinary sand and gravel are , of course , the most important, at least as regards volume of output . The building- construction industry absorbs approximately 75 per cent of the total value of all quartz and silica , as shown in Table 2 of Quartz and Silica, Part I, under "General summary . " Because of their unusual physical properties tripoli and diatomite find extremely wide uses in industry, and as the commercial deposits of these ninerals , especially tripoli , are scattered, large quantities enter into interstate commerce . Whereas ordinary sand and gravel are bulky commodities , these specialties have a fairly high unit value and hence can be transported relatively long distances .

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. This later program was initiated in July 1942 and was completed in May 1943. 4/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilisation of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. High extractions of lead, gold, and silver resulted from treatment of an oxidized, arsenical refractory ore by chloride volatilization. The ore was roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C. for 1 hour. The chloridizing reagent was 300 pounds of CaC12?2H20 per ton of ore. Ninety-nine percent of the lead, 98 percent of the gold, and 96 percent of the silver, and only 6 percent of the arsenic, were volatilized. These results indicated that a satisfactory method could be developed for treating this type of ore. Recovery and separation of the volatilized values and developing metallurgical and operating data for this process require further investigation on a more extensive scale. Tests by gravity concentration, flotation, and cyanide leaching did not give satisfactory results.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is intended to assist coal mine operators in the selection of longwall supports by providing advanced guidelines for performance testing and standardized test documentation to facilitate support comparisons. These advanced guidelines culminate in a series of proposed tests to evaluate (1) support resistance characteristics, (2) stiffness characteristics, (3) leg mechanics, (4) stability, (5) load transfer mechanics, and (6) structural integrity. The Bureau has conducted extensive studies on shield mechanics to identify boundary conditions that induce loading in support components, which is often not included in current testing techniques. This report discusses influential parameters that affect support behavior and provides insight into how components are loaded and what conditions produce the most severe loading. Testing philosophies and techniques in both active and static frames are discussed. Proper methods for determining support resistance are described and instrumentation requirements for advanced performance testing are provided.

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of nine manganese-ore samples in 1953-1954. Three samples were from Nevada and the other six from California. These samples represent marginal or low-grade ores from deposits that have been mined selectively in the past. The present interest lies chiefly in the possibilities of concentration of the remaining low-grade ores for economical exploitation. The treatment methods included gravity concentration and flotation in most cases. Results were sometimes unsatisfactory, particularly when the ore was too fine grained for liberation of the minerals within economical grinding range. The contaminating gangue minerals, such as quartz and iron oxides, were locked with the manganese to an extent that prevented separation of high-grade concentrates with satisfactory recovery. In cases where fairly good concentrates were made, it was at the expense of recovery, a condition typical of low-grade ores.
