Abstract
Of the sand and miscellaneous silica produced in the United States ,
ordinary sand and gravel are , of course , the most important, at least as regards
volume of output . The building- construction industry absorbs approximately
75 per cent of the total value of all quartz and silica , as shown in
Table 2 of Quartz and Silica, Part I, under "General summary . "
Because of their unusual physical properties tripoli and diatomite
find extremely wide uses in industry, and as the commercial deposits of these
ninerals , especially tripoli , are scattered, large quantities enter into interstate
commerce . Whereas ordinary sand and gravel are bulky commodities , these specialties have a fairly high unit value and hence can be transported relatively
long distances .
