A computer model has been generated to evaluate speech intelligibility of individuals wearing conventional and electronic hearing protectors. For speakers talking at normal levels in noise levels of 65 db(Lp) or less, it was found that conventional hearing protectors significantly reduced speech intelligibility. Under the same conditions, electronic protectors provided scores equal to those for the unprotected individuals while providing protection from high noise levels. Therefore, electronic hearing protection is valuable in areas where high noise level is intermittent.

This report contains results of two major efforts related to electrical transients on mine electrical power systems. The first area concerns the use of digital computers to model mine electrical power systems and predict transients or duplicate field recordings of transients. Two existing general purpose circuit analysis programs were used. The first was the TRW Engineering System Simulator or TESS. The second was Electronic Circuit Analysis Program or ECAP. TESS proved to be superior to ECAP in several important characteristics, including system size limitations and modeling nonlinear elements. The second major topic covered in this report is the evaluation of commercially available surge suppression devices. These devices were found to be quite acceptable and guidelines for the selection and placement of surge suppressors were included. The final important item is a listing of the worst-case transients, from a design point of view, for ac and de utilization systems and ac distribution systems.

"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. This report deals with the effectiveness and economy of installing mine timbers treated with preservatives in long-life service locations. Early in the present century, when mine timbers and labor were plentiful, it was not general practice to install treated timbers in such places. Because national sources of good mine timber are declining steadily, the mining industry must now conserve timber. Moreover, the cost of installing and replacing mine timbers has been rising. Therefore, even the simplest of treatments can be expected to give some return on the investment when applied to timbers that are to be installed in relatively permanent locations. Better methods of treatment will produce better returns. In a service test of maple timbers treated by the hot-and cold-bath method and installed in main haulageways of the Athens mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., Negaunee, Mich., zinc chloride-treated timbers had an average useful life of 13.3 years; borax-treated timbers, 11.2 years; and sodium fluoride-treated timbers, 7.7 years. Untreated timbers used as controls had an average useful life of 3.8 years.

The Carbonate King zinc mine is on the west slope of Kokoweef Peak, Ivanpah Mountains, San Bernardino County, Calif. It has produced more-than 10,000 tons of ore with a 39-percent?zinc content since mining operations began in 1940. The ore, consisting principally of calamine and smithsonite, occurs in replacements of the YellowPine limestone. Milling, has been done from the surface to a depth of 275 feet. Eight holes, aggregating 2,121, feet were drilled by the Bureau of Mines in an endeavor to establish extensions of the worked-out ore bodies and to develop new ones. Although indication of mineralization was found in several of the holes, no new ore bodies were developed.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 27,930 acres of the 52,000 acre East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area, CA-020-914/NV-020-006A, in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 45 miles east of Cedarville, CA. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records and examined prospects or mineralized areas. There are no organized mining districts and no historical or active claims in the study area; one small pit lies in the southwest corner of the study area. Based on published literature, sample results and field observations, there are no recognized mineral, geothermal, or fossil fuel resources. Epithermal mineralization indicators are not present or exposed. Sand and gravel deposits in the study area are not likely to be developed as other deposits are closer to market areas.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings, and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

During 1981, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral resource survey of the 6,400 acre (15,800 ha) Lincoln Creek RARE II area (No. 5983) in the Toiyabe National Forest (fig. 1). Samples of outcrops and stream channels contained no significant amounts of economic minerals. A radioactive deposit in a pegmatite dike occurs 1.25 mi (2.02 kin) southeast of the study area, hut similiar deposits have not been discovered within the area boundary. No coal or deposits were found.

This report presents pertinent data on all active water-flooding projects in Washington County, Okla., and describes in detail the operation and production history of five representative floods. The flooding of partly depleted oil-bearing sands to produce petroleum that would not be recovered by other methods is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry. In 1942, two water-flooding projects in Washington County produced 35 barrels of oil daily from 90 developed acres. In March 1951, 4,000 barrels of oil was being produced daily by the injection of 58,000 barrels of water on 19 active projects covering 1,645 acres. Several projects are being extended, and new operations are being initiated. Figure 1 shows the location of the active water-flooding projects in Washington County. The yearly oil production from Washington County increased from 1,076,000 barrels in 1948 to 1,720,000 barrels in 1950, owing principally to the effects of water flooding. To March 1951, permits to flood more than 8,000 acres in Washington County had been granted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

Several hundred membrane - filter tests were made as part of a program to develop equipment and procedures to evaluate the quality of waters and to determine the quality of water suitable to efficiently flood oil sands of known permeability . Results indicated that neither the color of the water nor that of the precipitate on a membrane filter is a criterion for determining the quality of injection water . Reasons for poor water quality include poor operation of filtering systems , dirty filtering aggregates , excessive amounts of oil in injection water , commingling of incompatible waters , and excessive use of chemicals . A good water is required to efficiently flood sands of low permeability , but fair results may be obtained in flooding more permeable sands with poorer quality water .

[THE LITERATURE contains relatively few thermodynamic values for interoxidic compounds, and these often are unreliable. This is especially true of data for ferrites and aluminates for which heat of formation determinations may involve extreme experimental difficulties. This report contains the results of new experimental work for obtaining the heats of formation of five ferrites (Ca2Fe2O5, CaFe2O4, MgFe2O4,, NaFeO2, and LiFeO2) and one aluminate (CaAl4O7), and a review and revision of previous similar work of this laboratory on five aluminates (Ca3A12O6,, 12/7 CaO-Al2O3, CaAl2O4, NaA1O2, and LiAlO2), The results for the 11 compounds are combined with entropy and high-temperature heat content data to derive tables of heats and free energies of formation (both from the oxides and from the elements) for the temperature range 298° 1,800° K, The relative stabilities of the compounds are discussed. The presented data all have application to ceramic reactions, and those for the calcium and sodium aluminates are applicable in considering soda-lime sintering processes for extracting alumina from silicate minerals such as day and labradorite.]

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control. Two Federal Bureau of Mines recycle hydrogenation experiments to prepare catalytic cracking feed stock were made at 3,000 pounds pressure with crude shale oil retorted from Green River (Colo.) shale in the gas-combustion retort. The hydrogenated product from the first experiment, made at 784° F., was used for investigating the effects of nitrogen content on catalytic cracking yields and for determining the quality of the catalytically cracked gasoline. Hydrogenated product containing 0.14 percent or more of nitrogen produced less gasoline when cracked in a CAT "A" unit than was obtained from East Texas light gas oil cracked at the same conditions; product containing 0.10 percent or less nitrogen produced a quantity of cracked gasoline equal to that obtained from the East Texas light gas oil. The catalytically cracked gasoline had research octane numbers calculated to be approximately 95 clear and 103 with 3 ml. of tetraethyl lead. The principal product from the second experiment, made at 828° F., was a low nitrogen content gas oil which was used for investigating the yields of cracked products obtained when it was catalytically cracked to different degrees of conversion. Yields of cracked products, when plotted as functions of conversion, were essentially the same, within the experimental range of the data, as published yields from catalytic cracking of East Texas heavy gas oil; however, yields from cracking the shale-oil product did not display the sensitivity to change of cracking temperature that has been found for East Texas gas oil.

Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine respirable dust reduction effectiveness of and interaction between face airflow and water sprays for a continuous miner. Increases in exhausting face ventilation from 3,000 to 9,000 cfm, in waterflow from 15 to 35 gpm, and in water nozzle operating pressure from 80 to 200 psi were evaluated. Results indicated that airflow had the greatest individual impact on reducing dust levels, with concentrations at return and operator sampling locations reduced by as much as 57% and 99%, respectively. Regression modeling was utilized to predict dust concentrations over the range of values tested for the control parameters. Interactions between the control parameters were significant and often defined an optimum level where further increases in that parameter failed to produce additional dust reductions. Increasing airflow to 8,400 cfm, waterflow to 25 gpm, and water pressure to 140 psi typically reduced dust concentrations at operator and return locations. Application of a control parameter above these levels can provide additional dust reductions if used in conjunction with appropriate levels of the other two control parameters. Otherwise, higher operator dust levels may result and can be attributed to increased rollback and/or airflow turbulence.

The Bumpus Cove area is in Unicoi County, Tenn., about 9 miles south of Jonesboro and 5 miles northwest of Erwin. Iron and lead ores were mined in the Bumpus Cove area before the American Revolution. The production of those metals continued intermittently until 1916. In 1850 this area was the most important producer of iron in the South. In 1911 several carloads of zinc ore was recovered from old dumps and shipped to Missouri smelters. In 1913 systematic mining of zinc ores was begun and continued until 1916. After that year, mining again became sporadic and continued so until discontinued in 1943.

During the early part of World War II , it appeared likely that supplies of chromite for United States industry might become critically short . As a part of the ensuing search for new sources of domestic chromite supply , the chromite - bearing black sands along the coast of southern Oregon were hurriedly investigated by State and federal agencies and by private interests , These investigations led to a decision to begin exploitation of the deposits immediately . A government stock- piling program was put into effect , a concentrator was financed by the Defense Plant Corporation , two privately controlled companies were encouraged to start mining operations , and the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey were authorized to search. for additional reserves of minable ore .

During the mineral survey of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and study areas by the author in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1976 (Marks, 1978), the area designated Reservoir-North (RARE II No. H1-485) in January, 1979, (U.S. Forest Service, 1979) was examined, along with other lands adjacent to the earlier study areas. However, the 1978 open-file report covered only areas originally designated for study. The present report on Reservoir-North is based on earlier work. No work has been done in the area since 1976. Mineral Appraisal Reservoir-North RARE II area (No. H1-485) is in the Northern Disturbed Belt which has been identified as having high potential for natural gas accumulations and lesser potential for oil accumulations (Mudge, 1978). Oil and gas lease applications in the area, indicate interest by oil companies.

Current certification testing of self-contained breathing apparatus includes tests with human subjects wearing the apparatus while exercising. During these tests, certain apparatus variables are measured during rest periods. Because of concerns that the present tests may not accurately simulate the stresses to which an apparatus is subjected in the field, the Bureau of Mines proposed new human subject tests. It was also felt that different measurement techniques would supply more reliable data on the apparatus response to these stresses. The Los Alamos National Laboratory was asked by the Bureau to evaluate the proposed tests and monitoring techniques. The major conclusions derived during this study are these: (1) The proposed tests are not too physically demanding. (2) As long as human test subjects are used, a minimum subject weight should be required for certification tests. (3) Important apparatus variables are the breathing resistance, temperature, and carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations of the inhaled gas. (4) Continuous monitoring should be used, rather than monitoring only during rest periods. (5) New pass/fail criteria based on realistic estimates of the user's physiological requirements, as tempered by present and future engineering limitations, are needed. (6) When available, breathing machines, rather than human subjects, should be used for most certification testing. (7) A more realistic ergonomics test than that proposed is needed. (8) A gas leak test for the system and a facepiece leakage test are also needed.

Uniaxial testing was performed on coal specimens to determine the time-dependent response. The testing was carried out on coal from six mine sites throughout the Western United States and Pennsylvania. Testing configurations were varied to allow analysis of moisture dependency, stress level and specimen orientation. Several theories were presented for the behavior of coal due to moisture diffusion. Experimental results showed the correlation between the theories and the actual material response. Coal deformation was found to be highly dependent on the moisture level of the testing environment. Moisture migration causes drying and shrinkage which lead to progressive degradation of the material. The coal tested experienced a rebound if saturated after a period of drying. This type of time-dependent behavior overshadows the dependence on the applied stress level, which, however, still produces a noticeable creep behavior. Analysis of one series of creep test results was performed. A relationship was developed on the basis of a simplified rheological model to describe the coal response to uniaxial stress. Previous empirical formulations in the form of power laws were compared and their deficiencies pointed out.

Methane flows and pressures were measured in mines in the Pittsburgh, Hartshorne, and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds. From the data, the permeability of each of these coalbeds was computed. It was found to depend strongly on the type of coal and on the amount of water in the coalbed, and it was found to increase with time. All of the coalbeds had a high-permeability zone adjacent to the face or rib, and the Pittsburgh bed exhibited directional anisotropy. Surprisingly, little or no overburden effect was observed.
