ACC ECOSAND is finely powdered crystalline silica, which can replace natural sand usage in concrete and plasters. ACC ECOSAND ensures a comparatively denser concrete than those made only with natural sand and / or quarry fines / Manufactured Sand (Artificial Sand). Moreover, there is a significant gain in compressive strength (10-15 %) & durability in concretes (Reduced chloride conductivity leads to increased durability). ECOSAND is a by-product of froth flotation of limestone. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full-fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the usage of flotation reject in concrete and plasters. Optimum level for usage of ECO-SAND is 50%. With 50% usage of natural sand+50% ECO-SAND in concrete mix, 1 day, 3 day, 7 day & 28 day compressive strength is increased by 30.1 %, 22.6 %, 15.1 % & 11.0 % respectively and with moderate chloride permeability as compare to 100% Natural Sand. Gold thiosulfate complex is difference with gold cyanide complex, which is easily adsorbed on activated carbon while gold thiosulfate complex cannot be satisfactorily recovered by activated car-bon. However, Gold thiosulfate could be recovered by activated carbon if cyanide is added into the thiosulfate solution. To avoid the cyanide solution, this paper will review several possible processes to recover the gold from thiosuldate solution: such as the cementation with metals, ion exchange resin and solvent extraction. The gold cementation with the powders of zinc, copper, iron and aluminium will be discussed. The advantage and disadvantage of each are compared. The consumption of thiosulfate and copper and feasibility of solution recycling will be discussed. The gold recovery by some ion exchange resins will be suggested. The processing conditions, its applications and the resin elution methods will be presented. The gold recovery by using solvent ex-traction will be reviewed. The processing conditions of solvent extraction process are discussed and compared.

"The results of mineralogical and technological studies of platiniferous dunites from Svetloborsky zonal massif (Urals platinum belt) are presented and the basic typomorphic signs of productive mineral assemblages are substantiated. The characteristic features of platinum ore mineralization are revealed: a wide range of iron-platinum alloys, enrichment of ore-formed system by the elements Os, Ir, Rh and activity of the S and As in it, intrusion of Fe-Ni sulfides in platinum and its fusion with magnetite. More than 80% of PGM mineral grains has size less than 100 microns, that determines the possibility of significant losses of platinum in the process of gravity separation and the need for additional recovery processes for small and fine fractions of platinum tailings and sludge products. Summarized results of laboratory tests of small-volume sample processing of platiniferous dunites are presented and the processing flow sheet is developed and tested. The flow sheet incorporates several stages, including stage-wise grinding and gravity separation of ore using the centrifugal concentrator Knelson KS-MD for differently sized material and flotation treatment of tailing products using new classes of reagents for additional recovery of PGM fines."

Vertical ring and Pulsating Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (VP-WHIMS) is widely used for week magnetic mineral beneficiation or ferrous impurity removal from non-metallic minerals. Because of the complexity of this machine, mathematical modelling of its process is complicated and time consuming. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to evaluate the VP-WHIMS performance and optimize its main operating parameters in beneficiating of the Chadormalu hematite sample. The operational parameters of this magnetic separator are considered as: magnetic field intensity (2500-8500 gauss), pulsating frequency (20-100 %max), ring rotation speed (0.6-4.6 r/min) and slurry concentration (15-35 w/w %). Concentrate grade and recoveries (weight and Fe) are monitored as responses. Centre composite design (CCD) was used for experimental study. Four process variables were set using small CCD. Eight star points (a=±1), eight axial points (a=±2) and five replicates at the centre point (a=0) were chosen as experimental points. In ANN system, the best network topology was obtained as (4-5-3). Many flotation kinetics models have been studied in the literature. Their applicability was extensively investigated and argued in detail. However, model selection criteria were not adequately discussed from the statistical points of view. In this investigation, the kinetic behavior of a complex copper sulfide ore was studied in a mechanical Denver flotation cell focusing on flotation kinetics of chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite. Different flotation kinetics models including nine common empirical models and four mathematical models namely Hill, Chapman (Sigmodial function), single rectangular (Hyperbola equation) and exponential were applied to the experimental data. In addition to assessment of the goodness of fit criterion for each model, a factor of model complexity was considered using information criteria (IC) (i.e. Bayesian information (BIC), low of iterated logarithm (LILC) and Akaike information (AIC) indices). The obtained results showed that the IC indices could simply manifest the best-fitted model to the experimental data. Whereas, the coefficient of determination values (R2) were relatively same for all models. By taking the R2 and model complexity criteria into account, the exponential model was chosen as the best representative mathematical model to demonstrate chalcopyrite kinetic behavior. However, Chapman model was selected as the best one for the flotation of pyrite and molybdenite. In case of the common first-order flotation kinetics models, fast and slow flotation kinetic model (Kelsall) was reasonably fitted the best to the given data of chalcopyrite. However, the gas/solid kinetics adsorption model was chosen as the best-fitted one for pyrite and molybdenite. Furthermore, it was found that mathematical models represent better results in association with flotation kinetic behavior of chalcopyrite, pyrite and molybdenite due to the consideration of more parameters in modeling. Finally, it was concluded that the IC indices must be applied to the process of model selection due to consideration of goodness of fit, complexity of a model and model consistency.

Large-scale separation or flotation cells, used in the primary extraction in the oil sands industry, are integral parts of the overall process of bitumen extraction. Good regulation of the interface level between the bitumen froth and the middlings in these cells can result in a significant improvement in bitumen recovery and throughput, and heavily influence process economics. Automatic control of such industrial processes presents challenges such as multi-phase flow dynamics, variable process gain and time delays, poor quality of measurements and significant disturbances. This paper details a case study application of development of multiple models of the dynamics of the interface level and the design of model predictive controllers (MPC) for a separation cell process. A Model predictive controller (MPC) using linear models is designed and implemented in real time on an industrial separation cell. The industrial implementation results show that the MPC scheme provides significant benefits over the current operations which use a PID controller. The benefits include significant reduction in the variance of the interface level resulting in higher bitumen recovery and smoother downstream operation plus energy savings due to reduced underflow pump speed.

"Gold has been a material in high demand since the dawn of humanity. After hundreds of years of exploitation, the increasingly search for gold occurs in lower grade deposits with greater extraction difficulty. Therefore, for maximum efficiency, deep knowledge of the characteristics of these minerals and their associations is crucial, which is acquired through an accurate and rigorous routine of process mineralogy and batch extraction tests. The industrial gold process extraction occurs by gravity concentration, sulphides flotation and cyanidation. For gravity concentration, it is fundamental to establish the proportion of free or coarse gold grains and its association to heavy minerals; regarding flotation, the most relevant data are the proportion of gold associated to sulphides and their liberation by the surface area; for cyanidation, it is crucial to evaluate gold accessibility and the kinetics of leaching. Thus, the characterization of gold associations and liberation is vital to establish the plant design, to optimize operating plants and to reduce gold losses. Our aim is the characterization of gold occurrence in low-grade Brazilian deposits with complex mineralogical assemblages to support processing flowchart definition and to predict metallurgical recoveries. Gold distribution in light and heavy minerals was evaluated by heavy liquid separation and the occurrence of gold in free or locked particles was carried out on heavy products by SEM-based automated image analysis using the MLA system. All the products of heavy liquid separation were cyanidated in head samples with different milling conditions to evaluate the reaction kinetics and maximum recovery."

"In 2015 in the frames of federal special-purpose program «National system of chemical and biosafety of Russian Federation (2009-2014)» Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Education ""Irkutsk National Research Technical University” (further–INRTU) performed works aimed at disposal of accumulated arsenical residues at industrial site of the former Angarsk arsenical plant (AAP) processing arsenious ores from Svirsk town in Irkutsk region. The plant in 1934-1949 produced arsenic trioxide for the defence industry. Prior to starting the works on disposal of industrial pollution focus the total amount of cinders stored on 13 ha of industrial site of AAP was 156 900 tons with 1% average arsenic content. Close to the cinders there were also remains of industrial buildings and process equipment in the amount of 6 600 m3 that contained 150 tons of arsenic. Additional source of pollution at the industrial site of AAP is contaminated soil amounted to 48 000 tons. Proven reserves of gold and silver in the cinders were 6.1 and 47 g/t respectively. In 2015 the source of arsenious pollution was detoxificated according to mineral matrix technology and stored in a special landfill with separate stocking of gold-containing cinder and other arsenious residues. This technology of waste disposal specifies extraction of valuable metals from cinder in future. The similar case is with Vershino-Darasunsky settlement in Trans-Baikal Territory where the abandoned industrial site of the former arsenic plant is located in the central part of the settlement. The concentration of arsenic and valuable components can be compared to the concentration at AAP. Since 2016 the demand for removal of such industrial pollution sources is legislated due to amendments in Federal Law No. 7-FZ on environmental protection. It results in a real possibility to remove such dangerous industrial residues deposits as the one located in Vershino-Darasunsky settlement. "At present, research on the surface chemical properties of uranium minerals is very scanty, which restricts the research progress of uranium ore flotation process research. The research aimed at exploring the surface characteristics of two common uranium minerals and providing basis for flotation process to enrich uranium minerals in ore. This paper selected pitchblende and uraninite as the object of study, which are widely distributed in uranium deposits. We chose out the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite from different ores collected from different uranium deposits. By means of Zeta potential test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) test, a preliminary study on surface characteristics of the pure minerals of pitchblende and uraninite was conducted. And the significance of the change of Zeta potential, the elements composition and valence state on the minerals surface for flotation was discussed. The research shows that, the Zeta potentials of pitchblende and uraninite in pure water are negative mainly when the pH value varies from 2 to 11, which maybe a result of the difference of ionization capacity between two kinds of oxy-compounds on the surface of minerals. On the surface of pitchblende and uraninite, the metal elements are mainly U, Th and Pb. U is mainly in the form of UO2, Th is mainly in the form of ThO2, and Pb is mainly in the form of Pb and PbO. Based on the surface characteristics of pitchblende and uraninite, we can select process and reagents appropriately in uranium ore flotation.INTRODUCTION Globally, the major challenges associated with exploitation of low grade ores are about finding economically feasible processes for reducing the mass of gangue minerals (Filippov et al., 2012). Among the beneficiation technologies of low grade uranium ores with complex minerals assemblage, flotation is the common process which is used to reduce production cost and eliminate the acid-consuming minerals (Li et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2015)."

"Particle size measurement is one of the most important factors in obtaining peak performance of the mineral processing plant in order to ensure efficient milling and flotation circuit operation. Off-line particle distribution analysis technologies only allow an infrequent check of the ore slurry size and hence do not allow for timely process monitoring or intervention. Most existing on-line particle size analysers suffer from a variety of disabilities such as poor statistics, non-representative sampling or mechanically complex setup. This paper will describe an Ultrasonic Extinction based method which overcomes many limitations of existing online analysers and has proven its performance for mineral applications over many years. Installation examples will be given. Since new technologies usually raise e questions about comparability and agreement to common particle size analytical methods e.g. sieving or laser diffraction analysis, extensive studies were performed comparing these different technologies to quantify the quality of results as well as its mathematical robustness."

"Although heap leaching may be perceived as a somewhat low-tech route for the extraction of low-grade minerals, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes are in fact extremely complex. There has been increased interest in heap leaching of sulphide minerals in recent years with the advent of controlled bio-heap leaching, and the need to mine more marginal ore deposits.A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap leach processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool. Some of the features include mineral kinetics, particle level effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas adsorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation.Two case studies are presented which illustrate specific features of the model for different applications and how these have helped to identify key areas of concern. In each case the model has proved as an invaluable tool either for the improvement of existing heap leach practice or for the development and assessment of novel applications."

In Florida?s phosphate industrial practice, the most favorable upper size limit of froth flotation is 1.18 mm which corresponds to particle weight of about 2.8 mg. Conventional froth flotation is not efficient in upgrading coarse particles (+0.425-1.18 mm). A limited number of studies have been devoted to understanding and improving coarse particle flotation. We have shown that the coarse particle flotation performance can be significantly improved by the presence of picobubbles generated by hydrodynamic cavitation. In this study, the size of picobubbles produced under certain hydrodynamic conditions was measured by a laser particle size analyzer. A size-by-size flotation performance analysis of coarse phosphate froth flotation in the presence of picobubbles is conducted in terms of flotation kinetics, selectivity and recovery. It was found that picobubbles doubled the flota-tion rate, increased the P2O5 recovery more significantly for +0.85-1.18 mm particles than +0.425- 0.6 mm and +0.60-0.85 mm particles. At a given acid insolubles (A.I.) rejection, the presence of picobubbles increased the P2O5 recovery by up to about 25%.

It is generally accepted that the optimal flow velocity for gravity classification is the final particle settling velocity or, which is the same, the particle spin velocity. However, we have found differences between the settling velocities and the spin velocities of the very same particles. Here we present the results of experiments in a cascading gravitational classifier comprising eleven stages. The feed material was introduced at each stage successively, from the first to the eleventh. The optimal flow velocity was determined for each case. From these experiments it follows that the value of the optimal flow velocity depends to a greater extent on the point of introduction of the feed (i.e., on the design of the device) than it does on the interaction between the solid phase and the flow.

"We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko at al. (1970) technique to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates. It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin aqueous film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system.This behavior was explained by the initial strong adsorption of positively charged interfacial complexes from the mixed surfactant system at the air/solution interface followed by adsorption at the silica interface. It was also shown that the chain length compatibility between the anionic and cationic surfactants controls the strength of the interfacial complex, determining an inhibition in the thin film rupture and dewetting of the film. The rupture mechanism was explained by an earlier established heterocoagulation mechanism between the positively charged air/solution interface and the solution/silica interface which remained negatively charged. The formation of the interfacial complex at the air/solution interface was confirmed by using surface tension data."

"This paper examines the grinding and wear processes in drum mills. A summary of the industry’s long-term experience with the proposed linings is presented. A method is proposed for assessing the efficiency of the grinding energy distribution between the successive stages. A case study is presented of grinding energy redistribution at Talnakh Concentrator by replacing spiral classifiers with a drum-type hydraulic screen. The problems of the kinetics of grinding processes in ball mills and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills are examined. It is demonstrated that in ball mills the feed particles are disintegrated by triaxial compression in the mill zones where discrete slippage of the charge occurs at major force interactions between the layers. Mechanism underlying increases in the specific energy consumption in grinding circuits based on SAG mills is shown.The problem of improving the throughput and reducing the specific energy consumption in mineral feed grinding is highly relevant because of the significant energy intensity. Up to 80% of the consumed energy is used to disintegrate ore fed into the drum mill. At all development stages of the drum mill grinding theory, the researchers have paid a great deal of attention to studying the patterns of the charge motion and the kinetics of the feed particles disintegration processes. In [1], it was shown that, due to the slippage between the charge layers being lifted, drum mills at concentrator plants operate in a mixed cascade and waterfall mode. A feature of the mixed mode is the toe zone, where the charge contacts the lining and the transition to a circular path takes place. Studies of the charge motion in the toe zone made it possible to develop a method for designing cross-sectional profiles of lining plates [2] for ball mill drums. The method is based on the principle of interaction between the balls and the lining, where the non-working rear surfaces follow the relative motion path of the balls before impacting the lining, while the working surfaces are orthogonal to the rear ones. Lining with the proposed profile provides contact with the charge and slippage-free transition to a circular path. This ensures an longer service life of the lining, a reduction in specific energy consumption, and an increase in the mill’s feed rate. The proposed method is applicable when designing lining plates of various materials. Steel liners with the proposed profile have been successfully operated [3] for more than 40 years at a number of projects in the industry."

"The hydrodynamics of the Tri-Flo™, a two stage cylindrical cyclone used in dense media separation, is studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The flow field is simulated with an Euler-Euler Volume of Fluid two-phase approach and the Reynolds stress turbulence model.A unique feature of the device is that the separation medium suspension is pumped and introduced tangentially into the two cylindrical compartments while the raw feed is conveyed to the feed hopper and fed at the axial inlet. This feature allows to use less pumping energy and limits the unavoidable production of fines. The Tri-Flo™ complex flow pattern is little known but central to the efficiency of the separation.The velocity field is computed within the two compartments of the separator. The interface of the air-core that forms in the inner axial part of the cylindrical sections is identified and visualized. The numerical results for a reduced-size 100 mm ID Tri-Flo™ are compared against laser Doppler measurements on a transparent acrylic model (Chinè, 1995) operated with water. The robustness of the model and its prediction capability are verified.The possibility to accurately predict the velocity profiles within the vessel and their dependence on the main Tri-Flo™ operating and geometrical variables paves the way to a better understanding of the functioning of the separator, its design improvements and scale-up."

Despite the fact that nickel (Ni) laterites accounts for about 60 % of the world?s nickel mineralization, commercial processing of complex, low grade Ni laterite ores by conventional beneficiation (e.g. magnetic, electrostatic and flotation separation) still presents intractable challenges, particularly in heap leaching. Invariably, low grade laterite ores require aggressive hydrometallurgical techniques (e.g., highly acidic lixiviant leaching at ambient or elevated temperatures) for Ni and cobalt (Co) extraction. As a precursor to heap leaching, agglomeration of the multi-mineral phase feed particles into robust and porous granules of 4-10 m permeable bed, is essential. In the present work, several basic and applied studies of the agglomeration behavior of real Ni laterite ores and selected oxides and clay minerals (hematite, quartz smectite and kaolinite) which constitute the predominant host gangue phases of typical laterite ores are performed. Isothermal, batch agglomeration tests involving sulphuric acid solution as a binder were carried out to produce coarse, narrow-sized (5 ? 40 mm) granules which were well characterized. The influential role of feed ore characteristics (e.g., mineralogy/chemistry and primary particle size distribution) and binder composition (30 vs. 44% w/w H2SO4) and dosage (15-25 wt.%) in agglomeration behavior and granule properties were examined through several characterization techniques including granule size, compressive strength, bed percolation and re-wetting stability and 3-dimensional micro-structure analyses. Links between feed mineralogy/chemistry and size, binder formulation, agglomeration behavior, curing conditions and final granule properties and structural characteristics are established. The implications of the findings to Ni laterite plant agglomeration for enhanced heap leaching are discussed. The beneficiation study of low quality pyrophyllite is conducted to enhance the value of it by selective grinding. In mining stage, the main gangue mineral is quartz, and the content of quartz in ore has an adverse effect on the quality of pyrophyllite. Using the huge difference in hardness between quartz and pyrophyllite, the selective grinding is accomplished using stirred ball mill. As a result, a finer pyrophyllite particle can be easily separated from coarser quartz particle by simple size classification, and the content of Al2O3 of fine particle smaller than 45um increased largely. It means that the pyrophyllite particle is ground selectively compared to the quartz particle, and the quality of pyrophyllite is enhanced.

Calcium sulfate whiskers are considered to be a prosperous reinforced material in application due to their high mechanical properties. But the hydration occurs easily at moist atmosphere or in aqueous solution. The surface topographies of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the hydrates were analyzed by on-line observation and using XRD. The results indicated the transformation of the crystal type and shape of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the reduction of whiskers? aspect ratio. The hydration process of the calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers and the effective parameters were further discussed based on FT-IR measurements. The conclusions were obtained that the hydration of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers can be divided into the three phases, namely, initial hemihydration phase, dehydration phase, and coarsening, dissolving and the re-formation of calcium sulfate dehydrate crystal phase. In addition, it was found that in the hydration process of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers the calcium sulfate dihydrate whiskers are formed at first and then converted into the calcium sulfate dihydrate with different crystal shapes, but in the hydration of gypsum hemihydrate the gypsum dihydrate is formed without transition products. The surface active site-calcium ion which has strong trend to react with H2O, the surface ?OH and the inner channels are considered to play important roles in the hydration process of calcium sulfate hemihydrate whiskers.

"After almost 100 years, since the first commercial application began in Australia, flotation has shown an extraordinary growth and nearly 2 billion tons of ore per year are presently treated by flotation processes. During this time flotation has promoted a wide scope of research activities ranging from fundamental chemistry and hydrodynamic studies to studies of industrial operations. In general, fundamental studies have been mainly related to ideal situations. In recent years, however, large efforts have been focusing on achieving a better insight into the actual sub-processes provided by the development of new and more sophisticated instrumentation. Since the massive incorporation of flotation columns, around 15 years ago, a renewed interest in flotation fundamental studies, process modelling and new cell designs have been observed worldwide. The key role of the froth has been recognized as an independent and sometimes rate limiting process step. Thus, separation of pulp and froth process stages seems the most appropriate in terms of process modelling, diagnostic, design and scale-up purposes.In relation to flotation equipment development, until the middle of the 1970’s, only the sub-aeration mechanical cells were dominant. Since the 1980’s, the use of pneumatic cells and forced air mechanical cells has emerged strongly. Also, in the last decade, flotation equipment has shown a dramatic increase in size, reaching values of 200m3 in unitary mechanical cells and more than 300m3 in columns. The general feeling, however, is that, despite the great advance observed in terms of process knowledge, the mechanisms and principles of industrial flotation cells design and scale-up are still not fully understood.Advances in process instrumentation and control now in use allow for more efficient operations, both in metallurgical performance and savings in operating costs."
