Interaction of aluminum with silica based ceramics Jose M. Soto, Jeffrey D. Smith, William G. Fahrenholtz. Department of Ceramic Engineering University of Missouri-Rolla Rolla, MO 65409-0330 USA ABSTRACT Interactions between A356 aluminum (Al-Si alloy) and dense fused silica (FS) riser tubes used for low-pressure casting of aluminum alloys were evaluated using a sessile drop approach. The tubes have a short service life, but cost and thermal shock resistance make them an effective solution. The main problem encountered during use is the reaction of aluminum with silica to form alumina and silicon, which causes failure. Tests have been conducted on as-fired (uncoated) and modified (coated) tubes. Experiments were carried out in a horizontal furnace at 1225°C under argon to minimize the effect of the aluminum oxide on the interactions at the alloy-silica interface. Images of the drop were acquired and contact angle values were estimated for uncoated and coated samples, but no significant differences in the contact angles were observed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of cracks at the interface between the reaction zone and the unreacted silica. The presence of reaction products (silicon in the reacting alloy and aluminum in a reaction zone between the alloy and the unaffected silica) has been confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy. A two layer coating system was found to be effective in reducing penetration of the aluminum alloy. The interactions between bed media and aluminum have been studied under static and dynamic flow conditions. An experimental system was set up simulating a small filter. Desired flow field can be created around alumina particles and velocities can be adjusted. A mathematical model was developed to predict the velocities, and this was validated using data from a visualization study. The interaction zone on the surface of the particles was analyzed with optical microscopy and SEM. This paper presents the study and compares the results under static and dynamic flow conditions.

"The mill at Noranda Mines Limited, Geco Division in Manitouwadge, Ontario went into production in 1957 treating 3,500 tons per day of copper, zinc, silver, lead ore. It was not until 1964, however, that the zinc concentrate drying plant was constructed. In 1970, milling capacity was increased from 4,000 to 5,000 tons per day. The zinc content of the ore is quite variable so that the tonnage of zinc concentrate dried varies from 200 to 650 tons per day.The drying plant was designed to dry 25 tons of zinc concentrate, dry basis, per hour from an initial moisture of 8.5% to a final moisture of 2%. Major components were selected so that capacity could be increased to 35 tons per hour with minor modifications.The rotary dryer is a Hardinge type ""XH-12"" with a diameter of 80"" and a length of 50 feet. The all welded construction shell is 1/2 inch thick mild steel plate with 3/4"" thick reinforcing bands under the tires arranged for operation at a slope of 1/2 inch to the foot. The 3/8"" x 12"" radial flights are welded to the shell. There are no flights in the last ten feet of the shell in order to reduce dusting. This unit is driven by a 50 HP motor through a Hamilton type CD250 double reduction helical gear speed reducer. The shell speed is 5.8 RPM.The standard Peabody horizontal air heater has a rated capacity of 10,000,000 B.T.U. 's/Hr. The combustion chamber is lined with high temperature refractory brick and is air cooled. The conical outlet section of the air heater is lined with insulating fire-brick. The burner is a type AT wide range mechanical atomizer fired by a type ""CR"" gas-electric ignitor.The Bunker ""C"" fuel is supplied by a Compower duplex pumping, heating and straining unit, including tank hotwell, Powertronic oil line heating system with a 550/24 volt transformer."

"Since the publication of a literature review on this topic (McIvor and Finch. 1986), the author has been involved in more than thirty rod milling efficiency tests at seven different milling operations. There have also been several interesting additional articles on rod milling found in the literature. This update describes the most important findings from investigations carried out since the previous review, as well as developments in the techniques used to evaluate the grinding efficiency of rod mills.Rod Mill Power DrawA series of power draw versus charge level measurements were taken on the rod mills at Leg Mines Selbaie and Kidd Creek Mines Limited (McIvor. 1989). These revealed a significant (about 10070) loss in power draw with the installation of new liners, a common observation among rod mill operators. This loss in power draw depends on the liner design, particularly the average thickness and lifting face profile of the new liner. The theoretical power usage of both mills was approximately 5070 lower than that given by the Allis-Chalmers power draw formula (Rowland. 1982).The shape of the power draw versus charge level curve suggested an opportunity for reducing media consumption. By increasing mill speed, power draw could be maintained with a smaller mill load, most significantly for mills operating with high charge levels. Analysis of data from 62 installations confirmed this (McIvor, 1989). On average, a 10 percentage point increase in critical speed results in a 15070 in specific media consumption (Le. kg of steel consumed per kWh of energy consumed). Table 1 lists a number of relatively high speed rod milling installations. No negative effects on the drive train, liner life, or the tendency for rods to tangle have been reported. A reduced lifting angle of the new liner leading face (e.g. 45 versus 90 degrees from the mill perimeter) is recommended for higher speed rod mills (Leclerq, 1990)."

"Since there was no representative from Wesfrob Mines Limited, the information on their infra-red concentrate drying operation, which had been prepared by Mr. K. Blower, was presented by Mr, Dorland. Mr. Blower, in submitting the information, emphasized that their objectives in this operation were (a) to guarantee less than 90%, of flow-moisture in their copper concentrates and thus satisfy marine shipping regulation• and (b) to minimize capital costs, The infra-red dryers have satisfied these objectives.To control final moisture in the copper concentrate, current practice is to preheat the filter cake with steam in the disc filter hood and then conveyor-0r7 the concentrate with infra-red calrod heaters. The application of steam aids the system as follows:1) Improves vacuum pump efficiency.2) Lowers viscosity of filtrate (increased temperature},3) Preheats the cake prior to radiant heating. (150°F)The hot cake discharging from the filter ranges from 10.6 to 10.9% moisture. After radiant heating the moisture level is reduced to 8.5% - 9.7% depending on production rate. Further moisture loss occurs during conveying and transferring to the stockpile for a final shipment moisture ranging from 8.1% to 9.5%. Production rate is frail J to 5 dry short tons per hour.1) #23 Conveyor 18"" flat belt covered from filter discharge to transfer point with 7 heaters end-to-end. Drive - Reeves Vari-Speed, 31:4 ratio, type 332-10-18, class ""D"", driving through a 24:1 ratio Dodge reducer. Speed of Conveyor - 3,9 feet per minute to 19.6 feet per minute. Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. The Ore and ProductsThe mines in the Saskatoon area — Agrium, PCS-Cory, PCS-Allan, PCS-Patience Lake, PCS-Lanigan and IMC-Colonsay — extract the ore from the Patience Lake member. The mines in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan — IMC-K1 and K2, PCSRocanville — extract from the Esterhazy member, while IMC-Belle Plaine, near Regina, solution mines potassium chloride from both potash-bearing members.Ore from the Patience Lake member is a medium-grained mixture of sylvite and halite, with a KCl content of 36%, insolubles averaging up to 5.5%, and little or no carnallite.The ore from the Esterhazy member is a coarse-grained mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) with a small amount of water insolubles, and some carnallite (a K-Mg chloride). Average run-of-mine grades are about 30% KCl."

Numerous voices are raising around the world to show how misleading and fuzzy commonly used risk assessments methods are. These criticisms come at a time when public trust in ?proponents of new projects?, operators, private or governmental, seems to have hit a low and the legal system ?targets? public officers. It is common that technical experts and the public strongly disagree in their analysis of risks. Risk definition requires the evaluation of probability and consequences and those words are oftentimes enough to stir great worry to the public. Thus it is nowadays commonly understood that ?reality? is not scientific, but resides in public opinion, hence urging technical people to communicate better, more transparently. Blatant failures on both counts have lead to the emergence of ?new myths? used to justify complacency using ?complexity? and other buzz words as an alibi. This paper (together with its companion presented elsewhere) explores how poor ?common practices? in Risk Assessment contribute to biasing project team, design teams opinions, skew decision-making process and finally misrepresent reality to the public resulting precisely in the raise of public distrust, legal implication witnessed around the world. The discussion first reviews the pitfalls of common approaches (FMEA, Probability Impact Graphs) pinpointing them as possible causes of future legal liabilities. An alarming disconnect also comes from various codes, ISO 31000 itself has this flaw, invoking the term ?acceptable?/?tolerable? without defining it or giving any guidance for its determination. Wide-spectrum public consultation could be developed to define a ?modern? social acceptability criteria helping all the stakeholders making/understanding decisions. Another alarming disconnect comes from the poor definition of consequences of mishaps and their societal ripple effects. This aspect is indeed mostly ignored in codes, leaving ample room to biases and censoring applied to potential losses. In our society no one seems to have anymore the possibility of hiding behind a shroud of ?carefully maintained? misrepresentation. It is time to act and ?write the book? for proper risk assessments avoiding misrepresentations.

Gold mill effluents contain toxic pollutants such as cyanide (CN), thiocyanate (CNS), ammonia (NH4-N), and a variety of toxic metals. Various practical and economical technologies are in use for the removal of CN and toxic metals from gold mill effluents, however, the removal of CNS and NH4-N is challenging. The presence of CNS and NH4-N may make effluents toxic to aquatic life. The new Canadian Metal Mining Effluent Regulations will require mine effluents to be nontoxic. As a result, there is a need to develop practical and economical technology for CNS and NH4-N removal. The Mine Effluents Program in the Environment Group is presently evaluating biotechnology processes for the removal of CNS and NH4-N from gold mill effluents. The processes being evaluated are attached growth systems such as a Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) and completely mixed suspended growth systems such as a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) operating in a batch mode. The research to date at MMSL has shown that the RBC is very effective in removing CNS and NH4-N from simulated effluents. The NH4-N removal project showed that the RBC is capable of removing 0.8 g NH4-N/m2 of RBC disk area per day at an average temperature of 4.5 oC and hydraulic loading rate of 0.02 m3/m2/d. The RBC was also found to be very effective in removing CNS (feed = 200 mg/L and effluent < 1 mg/L) at 8 oC and a hydraulic loading rate of 0.02 m3/m2/d. The SBR was effective in removing CNS and NH4-N (generated from CNS degradation) at SBR operating conditions of two-12 h treatment cycles and a temperature of 12 oC. The end product of CNS and NH4-N oxidation was NO3-N, which is relatively non-toxic.

The Mantaro Phosphate Property is located ~ 250 km east of Lima, Peru in the Andean altiplano near the city of Huancayo, Junin District. The Mantaro deposit is a mineralized zone of phosphatic rock currently defined by surface outcrops, trenches and drilling extending over a strike length of more than 30 km and a width of more than 5 km covering ~27,700 hectares. Mineralization is exposed as three roughly parallel exposures (?mantos?) trending in a northwest-southeast direction along the Mancaspico syncline. Estimated mineral resources1 contained in Manto 1 of the Property (4% P2O5 cut-off) as of February 21, 2010, are: Measured 5.548 million tonnes @ 10.8% P2O5 Indicated 33.975 million tonnes @ 9.9% P2O5 Measured + Indicated 39.523 million tonnes @ 10.0 % P2O5 Inferred² 376.265 million tonnes @ 9.0% P2O5 1Tonnes rounded to the nearest 1,000 and grade to 1 decimal place. 2Inferred material reported with no cut-off and an assumed grade. There is considerable potential to expand the resource base. Mantos 2 and 3 of the deposit have been geologically mapped and exhibit surface mineralization widths similar to Manto 1. Given that the deposit is of marine sedimentary origin, it is reasonable to infer that comparable grades and depth of mineralization are present within Mantos 2 and 3. Based on this assumption, the potential mineral deposits within Mantos 2 and 3 are estimated to be approximately: Manto 2 425-435 million tonnes @ 9% P2O5 Manto 3 280-290 million tonnes @ 9 % P2O5 These potential quantities and grade are conceptual in nature, there has been insufficient exploration to define a mineral resource and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in these targets being delineated as a mineral resource. However, should such conceptual resources be confirmed by trenching and drilling, the Mantaro Phosphate Property would rank as one of the most significant phosphate deposits in the world.

"Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock/overburden interface;2. glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacial sediments;3. preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites);4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history;5. collection of adequately large and representative samples;6. appropriate sample preparation and processing;7. appropriate geochemical analyses; and8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited control over till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 µ m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

"The Bathurst-Newcastle district, a subcircular area approximately 50 km in diameter, contains 37 massive-sulfide Zn-Pb-Cu deposits that have defined tonnages, and has 58 additional significant occurrences. The largest deposit is Brunswick No. 12, with total reserves (including past production) of 148 million tonnes grading about 12.5% combined Pb-Zn. The deposits/ occurrences are spatially associated with a felsic volcanic pile that contains a significant sedimentary component. In the vicinity of the Brunswick deposits the pile is divisible into lower and upper sequences. The lower is characterized by megacrystic rhyolite (QFAS) and coarse- to fine-grained quartz (± feldspar) wackes and/or tuffites (QAS); the upper sequence is characterized by aphyric to sparsely porphyritic rhyolites (HWR), micro-breccias, and acid hyaloclastites with interbedded dark gray sedimentary rocks. A greenish gray to dark gray siltstone (GGS) separates the two sequences and hosts the sulfide deposits. Lithogeo chemistry of least altered samples shows that the QFAS and HWR have an igneous character, whereas the QAS and GGS have a sedimentary signature. The two types can be distinguished on the basis of total alkalies (Na2 + K2O) versus SiO2/Al2O3 and Ti02 versus Fe/(Fe +Mg). Some trace elements, such as Sr and Y, also help differentiate the two types. The QFAS differs from HWR by having higher La/Yb ratios but lower Zr and Th. The Bathurst deposits do not show a close spatial association with rhyolites but rather are stratiform bodies Oacking clastic textures) within fine-grained sedimentary rocks. The scarcity of barite and other sulfates indicates that there was little mixing between the metal bearing fluids and cold seawater. High Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratios in chlorites also indicate the fluids did not contain a significant seawater component. These features and the large size of many deposits suggest that the deposits formed from metal-rich pore waters that were released catastrophicallyfrom an acquifer in the footwall stratigraphy."

Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

Many owners are also concerned with employee&apos;s well being and their company&apos;s public image.EmployeesJob security and a good income are probably still the most important demands, however, as time goes by, employees are also demanding more involvement in safety issues, working conditions, and even how work is done.The PublicThe public requires acceptable environmental standards, as well as enjoying the prosperity supplied by a successful operation.How are Mines Managed?Most mines are managed very traditionally. The basic credo is that the managers make the decisions, and the hourly, and junior salaried employees do what they are told. Clearly this is the extreme case, epitomized by the long service shift boss who might say ""It took twenty-years to become a shift boss, and no miner is going to tell me what to do"" .There are some exceptions, two notable ones being Campbell-Chibougamau, and T.G.S. (now Kidd Creek Mines) which, in very different circumstances, decided on a more participative style.Campbell-Chibougamau, having closed down due to unprofitable operations, reopened, using a team structure with working leaders, and a system for sharing gains against cost targets with employees. Although the system has some problems, and development miners are bonused conventionally, this has been a basically successful program.Texasgulf Sulphur, a company with a history of non-union operations, and a participative management style, made a corporate decision to operate their Kidd Creek Mine in the same way. The orebody was rich enough to allow them the luxury to do this, but they have never had a strike, so perhaps they have more than saved the cost of the benefits and salaries they needed to pay. They also reward employees with a stock distribution scheme based on service and earnings."

"A significant addition to Canada&apos;s commodity export transportation capabilities is being built by Ridley Terminals Inc. on Ridley Island in the Port of Prince Rupert on British Columbia&apos;s north coast.Site preparation began in early 1982. By the end of 1983 the terminal will be receiving coal from two major new mines being developed in B. C.&apos;s massive $2.5 billion northeast coal development.The RTI terminal will have initial capacity to transfer 12 million tonnes of coal a year from railcars to storage and to ships. Capacity will be doubled to 24 million tonnes as market opportunities are developed.The challenge of building this $220-million facility in less than 24 months, the benefits Canada has received from the work the project is generating, and the long-term faith in Canada that this project represents, are all part of the excitement which surrounds the Ridley Terminal and northeast coal developments.RIDLEY TERMINALS INC. (RTI) is building a very significant addition to Canada&apos;s commodity export transportation capabilities. The facility, on Ridley Island at Prince Rupert, on the north coast of British Columbia, is a key link in British Columbia&apos;s northeast coal development which in itself is a massive undertaking involving investment of some $2.5 billion. The entire project is making a substantial contribution to Canada&apos;s economy at a time when such contributions are sorely needed.The development is creating employment, not only in British Columbia where its various parts are being created by mining companies, railways and others, but also across the country where suppliers are manufacturing a wide variety of good s and equipment for the development&apos;s participants.The RTI terminal is no exception. It is a critical cog in this mega project&apos;s large transportation system and its construction is contributing substantially to job creation and to other economic activity, in the Prince Rupert area and in many other parts of British Columbia and the rest of Canada."

"The Chadbourne Project, located within the limits of the town of Noranda, Quebec, will make use of backfill materials to fill the voids left by the mining of stopes and pillars. A series of tests were conducted on different mixtures of slag and pyrrhotite tailings materials to evaluate their properties. The tests are described and some pertinent results are given in the paper.IntroductionThe Chadbourne Project is located in the centre of the Town of Noranda, Quebec, with houses as close as 120 m from the blasting operations. The ore is mined using the vertical crater retreat method. The voids left by mining activities will be filled. A program of pillar recovery will follow.Considering the proximity of houses and the need to recover pillars, the backfill program must be carefully laid out. No subsidence can be tolerated on surface.With these objectives in mind, a test program was undertaken by Nantar Engineering Limited and Queen&apos;s University to evaluate the possible ba ckfilling alternatives available to Chadbourne. One of the possibilities retained was the use of a backfill composed of broken slag material from the Horne Smelter and pyrrhotite tailings deposited on the Horne&apos;s pond a number of years previously.The back fill used at the Horne Mine until the mine closed in 1975 was composed of a mixture of 97% granulated slag and 3% pyrrhotite tailings. The tests leading to its use underground at the Horne Mine were described by Patton in 1952. The structural properties of the Horne backfill were ""intuitively"" known; it was agreed by all at the Horne Mine that the backfill was behaving remarkably well. "A study recently completed by the Prospectors and Developers Association, assisted by the author and computerized mine models he developed, presents a strong case that present tax rules severely handicap the junior exploration company relative to the established producer. This month, Tax Notes briefly summarizes the highlights of the study and some of the Association&apos;s ideas which came out of the study.IntroductionIn the case of any industry, a particular project or investment will generally generate a more attractive after-tax rate of return to a tax paying entity than to a non-tax paying entity: the ability to shelter current taxable income with tax deductions related to the project or investment can present a definite advantage as compared to shielding taxable income in the future with the same deductions. But, this advantage is probably seen nowhere more clearly than in the mining industry where the tax rules allow for substantial up-front write-off&apos;s. Studies show that the junior mining company which is earning no taxable income currently can be seriously disadvantaged, compared to the mining company which is currently generating taxable profit and paying taxes. This is particularly disturbing when one considers the importance of the junior segment of the mining industry. One might well ask where the equity is, in a tax system which causes the junior company to look at a deposit and see rock in the ground, when at the same time the deposit represents a viable mine to an operating company. This inequity and the importance of the junior mining company have been recognized to some extent in the income tax legislation. In recent years, the expansion of the rules for deducting certain earned depletion allowances against any source of income, and changes to improve the flow-through share rules, have gone part way in helping to put the junior on a more equal footing with the operating company. But it is questionable whether or not these helpful changes to the tax rules have done enough to alleviate the apparent inequities in the income tax legislation."

"The purpose of this paper is to determine the best techno-economic alternative for the treatment of tin ores, when comparing the various mining and metallurgical methods of preconcentration, concentration, volatilization (fuming) and up to the final stage of selling to the smelter. The study of the influence of the different parameters of cost, recovery and quoted prices has motivated the paper, which aims at determining the best process of ore treatment in terms of its techno-economic feasibility.Method of WorkOn the basis of head grades of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0% tin, the following alternative methods of treatment are possible:1. Mining-Concentration-Smelting.2. Mining-Preconcentration-Fuming-Smelting.3. Mining-Concentration-Separation, with direct smelting and fuming/smelting of the two fractions produced.The calculations were carried out on the basis of existing information and publications concerning the various experimental recoveries in the operating mills of COMIBOL. In the case of concentrates containing less than 10% or more than 40% tin, extrapolation was required.The final grade of the tin concentrates and the gross weight of the concentrate were calculated on the basis of the estimated recovery curves. The costs of the preconcentration and the concentration stage s were determined per gross metric ton of material treated.The calculation of the cost of the smelting stage is similar for all the alternatives, the royalties and smelting charge varying with the grade of the final concentrate. In the fuming stage, a uniform recovery of 90% was taken in all cases so as to obtain a final concentrate grade of 65% tin, regardless of the head grade of the feed material.For the separation stage, the following considerations apply:a) Separation can be carried out by gravity separation or flotation methods.b) The cost of separation varies depending on the system used.c) The distribution of tin in the two fractions is 100% at this stage. In other words, there is no loss of tin during separation."

"Emphasis in recent years in western Canada has been placed on the development of large open-pit coal mines, the most notable developments being in northeast British Columbia. However, vast resources exist below the limit of economic open-pit mining, and with world demand predictions of the late seventies in mind, the potential of underground coal mining in western Canada has been investigated. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Plains coalfield of Alberta, and there is optimism that underground coal mines will be developed in the Lethbridge area of southern Alberta.With no existing operations in southern Alberta with which to compare mining conditions, any mine planning and feasibility level studies rely heavily on the engineering/geotechnical data obtained from surface investigation to predict ground control problems and technical constraints on mining. Such investigations have been integrated with exploration drilling programs. Emphasis has been placed on extracting maximum information to provide an over-all appreciation of potential ground conditions and to identify specific ground control problems that could be encountered.The acquired geotechnical parameters are then used to evaluate the mine properties from an engineering standpoint for input into the determination of optimum mine layouts, development directions, mining methods and roadway and face support requirements. These geotechnical studies have been primarily directed toward the longwall mining method, but the acquired data base could equally be applied to alternative mining methods.In addition to the lithologic and structural controls which relate to roof stability, caving characteristics, floor heave and subsidence, investigations have been directed at gaining an understanding of the over-all surface and ground water regime with respect to potential inflow into the mine openings and ground control problems that could be caused by inflows encountered during mining. Experience has shown that soft floor conditions and water control are important factors to be considered in a longwall layout, and without doubt these parameters will play a major role in the design and operation of a successful longwall operation in the Lethbridge coalfield."

"Extractive metallurgy was divided into the three sectors pyro-, hydro-, and electrometallurgy in 1959 when Professor Joseph Newton at the Idaho School of Mines in Moscow mentioned this in his book Extractive Metallurgy. Pioneer hydrometallurgists who built this discipline can be traced to the alchemists in the ninth century. It is now a mature subject of great importance in which pressure plays a vital role. Short biographies of some hydrometallurgists and the processes they invented are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is the use of aqueous solutions to recover metals from ores. It is a relatively new discipline when compared with pyrometallurgy the use of fire to melt ores and recover metals which was practiced in ancient times. Hydrometallurgy can be traced to the time of alchemists whose concern was the transmutation of base metals into gold. Although alchemists did not succeed in their venture yet they described many reagents that are useful today. For example, they prepared sulfuric acid by distillation of iron vitriol, muriatic acid by distillation of sulfuric acid with salt, and nitric acid by reaction of sulfuric acid by reaction of sulfuric acid with salpeter. Jabir Ibn Hayyan the Muslim alchemist who lived in the ninth century (Figure 1) described aqua regia a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid that can dissolve gold although either acid has no action on gold. THE MIDDLE AGESIn the Middle Ages, it was reported that copper was recovered at Rio Tinto in Spain by allowing copper-containing pyrite to be exposed in piles to the action of air and rain. Copper sulfate solution obtained was treated with pieces of iron to precipitate metallic copper—a process that was called cementation. Georgius Agricola (1494–1555) (Figure 2) a medical doctor in Saxony who used to visit mines and smelters to examine miners and metal workers, described in his book De Re Metallica the parting of gold, i.e., separating of silver from gold by acids."

"Concurrent with the continuing demise of many Canadian mining towns is the rise of a new method of providing remote mine sites with a workforce. This is the Long Distance Commute (LDC) which uses commuter labour and requires no permanent settlements to support the mine operation. It provides a flexible and cost effective method of operation to the industry and relieves both governments and industry of the expense of building and maintaining mining towns. However, little attention has been paid to the effect on workers or their families of the LDC work schedule whereby workers spend a fixed number of days at the site followed by a fixed number of days at home. Off-shore oil rig experience would indicate that negative social impacts may be expected. Research leading to an understanding of the problems involved seems to be indicated. One innovative suggestion has been to use already established but dying mining towns as workforce pick-up points for new LDC operations further north.BackgroundUntil recently, mine towns were considered as a necessary component of mine development. This was a natural symbiosis resulting from the need to provide workforce accommodation close to isolated mine sites. The early mine communities in Canada were often just a huddle of shacks around a head frame. Gradually mining companies began to provide housing which varied from basic duplexes and quads in grid pattern layout to professionally planned and designed towns, either model company towns or the more recent suburbs-in-the-bush, the so-called ""instant towns"" of the postWorld War II era of resource development. The improvement in accommodation reflected the need to attract a stable workforce as mine operations became more sophisticated. City amenities were expected and offered in these mine towns as a way of encouraging a permanent community of mining families. Indeed in towns like Manitouwdage, Schefferville, and others, it was not unusual to find a significant percentage of two- and three-generation families apparently providing the permanent mining communities so desired by mine operators."
