The costs of labour and electric power are of prime concern to almost all industrial enterprises, and various methods of reducing their impact on production costs are constantly being developed. Automation is one of these schemes, and has received a good deal of attention in the past few years. In the mining industry, compressed air is almost universally used, and its cost is significant. Although the compressor machinery now in use has achieved a high degree of development, the hazard of explosion and fire still exists in these systems. There is thus considerable resistance in some quarters to suggestions that such installations can be safely and successfully automated. The Milliken power plant consists of two 30,000 lb. /hr. fully equipped high-pressure boilers, four H.P. air compressors, a steam turbine for stand-by power, and several L.P. compressors and vacuum pumps. With the installation of automatic and protective equipment in the machinery section, the shift force has been reduced from three to two men.

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. "IntroductionAS COMPARED with coal mines in the United States, and even with some of those in eastern Canada, the coal mines of western Canada, generally speaking, :have made little progress toward mechanization at the working faces. So far as Vancouver island is concerned, there are three main reasons for this : ( 1 ) in some areas, conditions• easy for hand-loading but unsuitable for mechanical loading make high outputs per man •possible by the former method; (2) faulting of the coal seams in ..some areas precludes long-term planning and the introduction and efficient use of expensive equipment; (3) thinness •and other characteristics of the seams in many areas favour hand-loading.No. 8 MINENo. 8 mine of Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir), Limited, is located in the Cumberland sub-area of the Comox coalfield on Vancouver island about 90 miles west-northwest of Vancouver. The geological structure of this coalfield has been described by J. D. McKenzie. The seams occur in the Comox formation, a subdivision of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group. The formation is of near-shore origin and was laid down on an irregular surface of' older rocks. The irregular generally have a northeasterly dip, modified by gentile folds and by a •few large, and a number of smaller, faults.Four seams have been worked in the Cumberland area and all vary in thickness and in the amount and number of interstratified bone and rock •bands."

The Red Lake greenstone belt is an irregular mass of lavas sedimentary rocks and intrusives which is approxiately 35 miles long 18 miles wide and 7 miles deep. Basaltic volcamcs are the oldest rocks w1thm the belt. They are believed to have been laid down on an ancient crust which is at least 3 billion (3 x 109) years old and was composed partly of sediments. The basaltic rocks are overlain by acid volcanics and sedimentary rocks which have been complexly folded and are preserved as a down-folded remnant of younger rocks within the older crust. The volcanics and sedimentary rocks of the greenstone belt have been cut by intrusives with a wide range of composition. The emplacement of the intrusives and the accompanying regional metamorph-ism which terminated the orogenic activity in this area are believed to have occurred approximately 2.4 billion years ago. The basalts and many of the basic and ultrabasic intrusives undoubtedly had their source in the sub-crust or mantle. At least some of the granitic intrusives are believed to have had

The safety dogs proved ineffective and permitted the cage to crash through to the bottom of the shaft, with disastrous results.Following this accident, the Ontario Government appointed a Technical Committee to investigate The Safety of Hoisting Equipment and Hoisting Practice in Ontario Mines. This Committee consisted of Dr. C. R. Young (Chairman) and Professors T. R. Loudon, E. A. Allcut, V. G. Smith, and Lloyd M. Pidgeon. The Ontario Mining Association (at the request of the Ontario Government) also appointed a Committee consisting of Messrs. R. E. Dye, R. D. Parker, and R. L. Healy."

"THIS PAPER will trace the work done in bringing the Munro underground ""A"" •Orebody into production to replace the open pit, which was scheduled to be completed early in 1959. Included will be an outline of the exploration work and early planning, and of the final decisions on mining methods. Some of the more detailed work will be described and reasons will be given for the decisions made regarding development work, mine ventilation, ground support, and equipment. Brief mention will be made of open pit operations, as these have had some influence on underground development. Also, some of the main geological features of the ore occurrence will be de-scri0bed, as these had to be taken into consideration when making decisions on ore development and mining methods.LOCATION AND HISTORYhe Munro mine of Canadian Johns-Manville is in Ontario, approximately 50 miles east of Timmins and 40 miles west of the Que-bec-Ontari-0 boundary. The producing orebody is in the southwestern part of Munro township. Property controlled by the Company extends nortl1westerly about 2¥2 miles into Beatty township, on which two other interesting asbestos-bearing zones have been partially expl-0red. Active exploration work on the property was started in March, 194.9, and continued until the summer of 1950."

Quartzite et gneiss à, grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe métasédimentaires, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite.La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confére des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation.Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent.L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. "AT PRESENT, it is not certain that any of the sulphide de in the Province of Nova Scotia attain the lower grade limit of 60 per cent sulphides over the minimum area of 1,000 square feet suggested as cut-off specifications for inclusion in this Symposium. However, several of them do include massive sections of substantial size and others represent concentrations of sulphide material that are well above average. It is felt, therefore, that a tentative classification of the deposits and presentation of their geological settings are justified and may help round out the genetic aspects of this study. Accordingly, data considered to be the most pertinent are assembled here in the event that some may fit into larger-scale patterns of mineralization that may take shape as a result of this investigation.The three principal massive sulphide deposits in Nova Scotia are the Stirling, the Smithfield, and the Walton. The locations of these are shown on the accompanying key-map (Figure 1).Three other deposits, the locations of which are also indicated on the map, are the Meat Cove, Rocky Brook, and Gays River de¬posits. Although these fall far short of the minimum dimensions and grade specifications referred to above they are singled out because they have received more than passing attention and are illustrative of the mineralization types to which they belong."

The past decade has witnessed a rapid increase in the number and variety of uses found for internal combustion engines in mining operations. Gasoline engines are now widely used for operating core drills, pumps, compressors, small hoists, switching locomotives, tractors, boats, and other equipment. The heavy-oil engine is employed for operating compressors, generators, shovels, ore-milling machinery, and- in the iron, copper, and coal districts- in connection with that' latest newcomer in modern railroading, the oil-electric locomotive. Each of these applications could well form a subject for a lengthy treatise in itself. This paper, however, will be confined to a discussion of some of the features of internal combustion engines as applied to mine compressing plants and mill drive. Perhaps at no time in the history of mining in Canada has the search for new mines been more vigorously carried on, more old properties rejuvenated, or more remote districts exploited than during the past three years. The mine operator of today has a far wider range of equipment and facilities at his disposal than had the pioneers of Rossland, Cobalt, or Porcupine. Each year now witnesses the hinterland driven farther and farther back as improved forms of transportation, machinery, and methods make possible the exploration of properties once considered too inaccessible to warrant serious attention. Howey, Sherritt-Gordon, Callinan-Flin Flon, Jackson-Manion, Picard Gold Mines, and a number of properties in British Columbia, afford excellent examples of work carried out on an extensive scale miles from a railway, or in comparatively inaccessible mountain regions.

In the past, conventional reflection seismic techniques were not very successful when applied to typical mining exploration: they lacked resolution in the shallow range or were not cost effective. By combining a light earth tamper source, special geophones and field procedures, a stacking process of the returning seismic events using a microprocessor system, and a sophisticated sequence of adapted digital data processing, Mini-Sosie achieves high resolution in the 100-ft to 4000-ft range. Additional advantages result from the very quiet nature of the source and flexibility of the system. Although Mini-Sosie might be used in the refraction mode, or for well velocity logging, it has found its main applications with the reflection technique.

THE following is a brief description of the method of hoisting ore automatically at the No. 14 shaft of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, Schumacher, Ontario. All ore and waste below the 3875-ft. level is hoisted up No. 14 shaft from the 7000-ft. level to the 3000-ft. level. Seventy to seventy-five per cent of the mining is done in this area. The shaft consists of four compartments: a man way, a ventilation compartment and two skip compartments. The hoist, located on the 3500-ft. level (see Figure l), is an 80-in.-diameter, 4-rope friction winder, utilizing two 6-ton front-dump skips in balance. The hoist is powered by a 1,100-h.p. A.C. motor, the maxi-mum speed being 2,400 ft. per minute. The operation can be either manual, push-button automatic from the pocket, or fully automatic. Men can be raised or lowered in the skips, using a collapsible aluminum platform placed inside the skip box.

"Abstract-The Orion gold mine, located 7 km northeast of the town of Malartic, Quebec, was discovered in mid-1985. Underground exploration was undertaken in 1986Ieading to commercial production in 1988. The upper part of the orebody was exploited above the 125 m level and a total of 131 090 t at an average grade of 5.31 g/t gold were extracted.This paper describes the authors' current knowledge and interpretation of the geology, gold distribution, and structure of the Orion No. 8 ore zone deposit. The deposit is an epigenetic lode gold occurrence somewhat unique in that both quartz-vein type and pyritic type of gold ore occur side-by-side. It is located within the Marban-Norlartic Deformation Corridor (MNDC) formed during a first deformation stage (D1). The MNDC is a well-defined regional structural feature in the Val d'Or- Malartic mining camp. Primary gold mineralization is associated with the D1 event and is represented by pyritized , silicified and brecciated basaltic lavas enclosed by ultramafic flow units. The ore zone is concordant with the MNDC. Felsic intrusions are spatially related with the ore zone, but their role in the genesis of the ore has yet to be defined.A second deformation event (D2) resulted in local folding, a second schistosity (S2) and reverse faulting. Gold remobilization, the formation of the gold-bearing quartz breccia and the emplacement of the main quartz vein at the No . 8 zone deposit were associated with this event."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to drawn attention to recommendations which have been accepted by the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning radiometric reporting methods and calibration in uranium exploration, and secondly to emphasize the benefits that- will stem from adopting them. These recommendations are contained in an IAEA Technical Report, No. 174, which has been prepared with the intention of serving as a general guide to the subject. The existence of this specialized report is likely to be unknown to most of those who can benefit unless it is given some publicity by an organization such as the CIM. The recommendations were prepared by a small international committee consisting of Dr, P. H. Dodd , U.S .A. , Dr. R. L. Grasty. Canada, Dr. L. Levborg, Denmark, Dr. M. Matolin, Czechoslovakia , Dr. S. D. Simov, Bulgaria, and the writer.The fact that there are standard scientific units of mass, distance and time is taken for granted, It is also accepted that the type of instrumentation used to measure one of these parameters is irrelevant to the way the measurement is reported. Geophysical parameters such as magnetic field strength and gravity have generally accepted units, the gamma and milligal, which are defined in SI terms. These units are employed irrespective of the operating principle, or manufacturer or organization involved in the measurement."

"IntroductionTHE GIANT YELLOWKNIFE property is on the west side of Yellowknife bay, Great Slave lake, N.W.T., some 600 air miles north of Edmonton. This paper deals with the underground development and mining of the complex system of orebodies which have produced, in the first fifty-six months of operation (May, 1948, to December, 1952), 652,464 tons of ore with an average grade of 0.80 ounces of •gold per ton (1).The mine has been developed from three vertical shafts designated A, B, and C. Figure l shows the positions of these openings with respect to the known ore-bearing zones and the surface plant.A shaft was sunk to a depth of 522 feet in 1945-46, primarily as a prospect shaft for investigation and development of the East Zone orebody. Drifting was carried out on the 200-and 325-foot levels. Before this development had been completed it was clear that the funds immediately available made it imperative to get revenue from production as soon as possible. By the beginning of 1946, the remarkably high-grade character of the ore in the present B Shaft area had been established by surface drilling, and the decision was made to obtain initial production from this source. Since known orebodies at shallow horizons were to be developed quickly, the choice of a suitable rock outcrop for the shaft was something of a problem."

BEFORE discussing some of the technical aspects of the steam generating plants of Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, it might be of interest to go back through history and see the development of steam generation in this public utility. Back around 1902 Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, Limited, had three slide-valve engines in-stalled at its Water Street, Halifax, generating station for a total capacity of 1,800 kilowatts. The plant remained at about this size until 1910 and in 1911 a 2,000 kilowatt steam turbine was installed to raise the total capacity of the plant to 3,800 kilowatts. In 1916, a 3,000 kilowatt turbine was installed and one of the slide-valve engines was removed to make a total plant capacity of 6,200 kilowatts. The total demand in the Company's service 8rea was at that time 4,000 kilo-watts.

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

The Ministere de l'Énergie et des Ressources du Québec, under the Canada-Quebec Mineral Development Agreement, and the private sector have put an emphasis on exploration, mapping and evaluation programs in the Grenville Province for minerals, particularly since 1983. These programs have led to the discovery and the development of deposits such as architectural granite, graphite and dolomite, and have also led to inventories of occurrences and prospects of wollastonite, silica, calcite, dolomite, alumina silicates and rare earths. The deposits discovered lately are presently being quarried or will be in the near future. The most promising occurrences and prospects have been claimed."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to present .a summary of the evidence given before the Petroleum and Natural Gas Conservation Board in support of applications to it for permits to export natural gas from Alberta.I will attempt to be objective in my statements, despite the fact that my main interest in the hearings before the Board was to advance the interests of my own clients, the Westcoast Transmission Company, Limited.The hearing of the export applications •commenced before the Board in January, 1950, with the .application of the Westcoast Transmission Company. Joint hearings were commenced in September, 1950, and completed on December 14th, 1951. The Board heard evidence in support of six applications for export, one application to build a gathering system in Alberta, and three interveners, the .latter being the City of Calgary, the local gas companies, .and the coal interests, including both operators of coal mines and the Unions.The evidence comprised better than 8,400 pages, over two million words, and occupied 92 days before the Board.The Interest in Natural GasThe natural gas industry is one of the newer industries. It is not yet twenty years •old. In the United States, the expansion •of pipeline facilities has been phenomenal in the last fifteen years, and particularly in the last three years, when a total of over two billion dollars was invested in pipeline facilities. There are approximately 250,000 miles of gas transmission pipelines in the United States at this time, with additional lines constantly being pressed."

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses.
