Activities of COO in the three solid solution series COO-MgO, COO-MnO, and COO-"FeO" have been determined at 1200°C by equilibrating oxide samples with a metal phase (cobalt or a Co-Fe alloy) in atmospheres of known oxygen activities. The systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO are ideal, within limits of experimental error, whereas the system COO-"FeO" shows a slight positive deviation from ideality at the temperature of this investigation. KNOWLEDGE of activities of oxide components in solid solutions is necessary for the calculation of the cation distribution among coexisting oxide phases in many important metallurgical, ceramic, and geochemical systems. Very few activity-composition curves are available for such systems at the present time. A start on the prodigious job of obtaining such data has been made by studies of solid solutions with simple sodium chloride type structure containing NiO or "FeO" as a component.1-3 The present paper describes similar studies for solid solutions with sodium chloride type structure containing COO as a component. For the systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO, the activity solid solution is determined by the equation Here po and are the oxygen activities of the gas phase in equilibrium with the phase assemblages metallic cobalt plus oxide solid solution, and metallic cobalt plus pure COO, respectively. In the system CoO-"Fe07', the metal phase is a Co-Fe alloy rather than pure cobalt. In this case the activity of COO in the oxide solid solution is calculated from the equation where a& is the activity of cobalt in the metal phase. Because the system Co-Fe is close to ideal4 and the metal phase appearing in the present work contains less iron than cobalt even at the lowest COO concentrations of the oxide phases used may be set equal to N . LARGE copper whiskers (-100 p) of 11111 orientation were tested in a floor-model Instron testing machine, at liquid nitrogen temperature. (Testing methods will appear elsewhere.) Whiskers deformed by twinning after some initial deformation. A load-elongation curve at the onset of twinning is reproduced in Fig. 1. Twinning was confirmed by taking a back-reflection Laue picture, using a slit colli-mator, which showed distinct splitting of reflections. The tensile stress reached just before twinning is about 1.4 x 107 g per sq cm (-7.0 x106 g per sq cm—resolved shear stress) which drops to 1.2 x107 g per sq cm (-6 x 106 g per sq cm—resolved). This twinning stress is about five to ten times larger than the value for bulk single crystals of copper deformed at 77°K (-106 g per sq cm—resolved). Twinning models based on Cottrell-Bilby's pole mechanism are discussed in detail by Venables.' In the present work a mechanism based on the idea of failure of a Lomer-Cottrell barrier by recombination will be proposed. An L-C barrier may fail either by recombination or by dissociation.3 Fig. 2 provides the necessary information. It shows that the stress necessary to break such a barrier is about 1.8 x 107 g per sq cm by recombination and 4 x 107 g per sq cm by dissociation at 77°K. The twinning stress reached by whiskers is comparable to the stress level required for failure of an L-C barrier by recombination. (Stroh himself points out that his calculations should not be taken too literally.) About half a million sucker-rod pumps are installed in oil wells in the U. S. alone. In Venezuela, too, the system is widely used; some 5,000, or 90 percent, of Cia. Shell de Venezuela's wells produce a total of 400,000 BOPD by this method. Most of the crude pumped is viscous, gassy and contains relatively small amounts of free water. API gravities vary from 90 to 16O; dead oil viscosities vary from 10 to 10,000 cp at the pump; and GOR's range from 100 to 2,000 cu ft/bbl. Pumps are set at depths ranging from a few hundred to 6,000 ft; the average setting depth is about 2,500 ft. From the literature, it appears that although recent years have seen significant progress toward understanding the rod pumping system as a whole, relatively little attention has been paid to those key items, the sucker-rod pump and the subsurface gas separator or gas anchor. Perhaps because of proration in the U. S., pump manufacturers have seemingly concerned themselves more with the durability of their product, achieved mainly through robust design and metallurgical know-how, than with its working efficiency. In 1963, CSV commenced a major rehabilitation and expansion of its heavy oil fields along the Bolivar Coast. The advent of the more efficient gravel-packed completion and of large-scale thermal recovery (mainly steam soak) operations resulted in well potentials *Now with B. I. P. M., The Hague, The Netherlands. greater than pump capacities. Hence, an urgent need arose to improve over-all pump efficiencies and to attack those special problems related to the production of both the extremely viscous and the hot, steam-laden crudes that formed an increasing proportion of the total stream. There followed a detailed investigation and testing program, carried out in close cooperation with a major pump manufacturer. This culminated in the introduction to the oil industry of a new line of sucker-rod pumps. Early Investigations and Experiments Field Tests Extensive field tests were carried out in three primary Bolivar Coast wells with an in-situ dead oil viscosity ranging from 400 to 6,000 cp. In these installations provision was made to (1) monitor bottom-hole pressures below, in and above the pump by means of pressure transducers, and record casing- and tubing-head pressures continuously; (2) measure accurately the annulus gas, as well as measure the tubing gas and liquid production from the well; (3) take special PVT samples of the well fluid; (4) measure power consumption of the prime mover; and (5) measure the rod loads at the polished rod. A typical test installation is illustrated in Fig. 1. It was established from the pressure transducers that with viscous oils, there is considerable flow resistance across the pump and gas anchor assembly. Results of experimental work on the in situ combustion process were first published in this country in 1953' when Kuhn and Koch described results of a three-well test in Jefferson County, Okla. Shortly there-after Grant and Szasz2 described field studies in Nowata County, Okla., in which several modifications of the basic combustion process were investigated by injection of various oxidizing gas mixtures other than air. In the past five years speculation concerning this method of oil recovery has continued, with a number of interesting papers on various aspects of in situ combustion appearing in the literature3,4,5,6,7. However, only one of these' provided actual engineering information on pattern-type field experiments. The primary objectives of the Oklahoma three-well test were to check operation of specially designed electrical ignition equipment and evaluate problems associated with initiation of combustion in a natural oil sand reservoir. Immediately following successful completion of this test in the Pontotoc sand, plans were activated for a second field experiment to be conducted in the same sand a short distance away. The objective of this second field test1 as to establish a relationship between field observations and information derived from laboratory experimentation and computations. Secondary objectives of the test were to develop operating tech- niques and define operating problems, and to obtain information that would assist in the economic and engineering appraisals of the process. Careful planning was required since this test was designed with the hope of providing basic information on the characteristics and operation of a combustion drive. It was necessary to include test facilities which would not only permit precise control and measurement of the process variables but would also provide sufficient flexibility of control to insure that variables in the combustion process could be studied during the course of the test under a wide range of conditions. In order to accomplish these objectives elaborate instrumentation and several control wells were included in the design of the test installation. This type installation was felt to be well suited for an experimental study, but was in no respect intended as a counterpart of a commercial-scale operation. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY WORK An important objective of the field experiment, as stated previously, has been to obtain reliable data on operating variables which might be compared with similar data obtained in laboratory combustion tests. The value of successful correlations between quantities that can be measured in the laboratory and those obtained in a full-scale commercial venture has been well established for other industrial processes. The difficulty of following a process underground should make such correlations even more essential here. Also. approaching the field test phase of development of in situ combustion, it was considered desirable to precede design of test equipment with laboratory combustion studies under a variety of conditions to establish likely ranges of variables. These included temperature, air injection rate, frontal advance rate and produced gas composition.

One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

The eastern Washington— Idaho clay region stretches along the northeast margin of the Columbia basin for 150 mil es. The three better known and developed clay areas are Clayton, Wash., (2 miles north of Spokane); Mica, Wash., (10 miles southeast of Spokane); and Moscow-Deary-Bovill, Latah County, Idaho (about 80 to 90 miles southeast of Spokane) see Fig. 1. Clays from the eastern Washington— Idaho clay area have been mined for more than 50 years. At present Mica, Washington deposits are used by the Gladding—McBean & Co. to make a variety of bricks and ceramic products and Latah County, Idaho clays are used by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. to make refractories. The Anaconda Co. made an intensive investigation of the clay deposits in the northeastern Washington-!daho area in 1919 to determine the existence of a supply of raw materials from which alumina could be made. The greater part of the work, which included systematic drilling and shaft sinking, was concentrated at Mica, Wash. This was part of a research project carrted on by the Anaconda Metallurgical Research Dept. under the direction of Frederick Laist and F. Frick and it was terminated in 4920. V. D. Perry, Vice President and Chief Geologist for The Anaconda Co., in 1952 assigned the writer to make a preliminary study of clay and other potential sources of alumina ore in the Pacific Northwest with particular emphasis on those deposits which might be of future importance to The Anaconda Co9s. then new aluminurri plant at Columbia Falls, Mont.

Scope for Thermal Recovery in Shell's Heavy Oil Fields in Venezuela The main heavy oil reservoirs on the East coast of Lake Maracaibo (Fig. I), known as "Bolivar Coast", initially contained some 20 billion bbl of oil in place with gravities in the range of 10 to 15° API. The current total production rate is about 400,000 B/D. Since the recovery to date is on an average only 12.5 percent of the initial oil in place, these fields offer a vast potential for secondary recovery methods. The reservoirs are characterized by moderate depth (generally 1,000 to 3,000 ft; maximum 5,000 ft), good formation properties such as net oil sand thickness (50 to 300 ft), high porosity (30 to 40 percent) permeability (1 to 3 darcies) and oil saturation (initially about 80 percent) and high oil viscosity (100 to 10,000 cp in situ), all of which are favorable for the application of thermal recovery processes. Since 1957, steam drive, steam "soak" and underground combustion have been tested or are being tested in this area.1-3 This paper deals with a major steam drive test in the Tia Juana field. The test was commenced in Sept., 1961, on the basis of encouraging results of laboratory experiments and pilot field tests, which will be discussed briefly. Early Laboratory Investigation of the Steam Drive Process In 1956 a series of model experiments was carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amster- dam, to investigate the displacement of heavy oil by steam.' The prototype studied was a horizontal, un-consolidated heavy oil reservoir, subjected to a linear steam drive. The model, representing a slab from this reservoir along the main flow direction, consisted of a steel tube filled with oil-saturated sand, provided with layers of rock at the top and bottom to simulate conductive heat losses to cap and base rock. Lateral heat losses, perpendicular to the main flow direction, were minimized by insulating the sides of the model. Heat flow and viscosity and gravity forces were scaled by taking the steam injection rate and sand permeability inversely proportional to the geometric reduction factor of the model, and using materials (oil, steam, cap rock, etc.) identical with those of the prototype. The main feature of the process was a frontal displacement mechanism that was observed within wide ranges of injection pressure and rate, oil viscosity, initial oil saturation and sand permeability. The high stability of this front can be attributed to the high volumetric steam flow rates, combined with the reduction in oil viscosity. High recoveries were obtained due to the low residual oil saturation of about 15 percent in the zone swept by steam. The latter value pertains to the specific test conditions (heavy oil, uncon-solidated sand) and may be lower for light oil, due to the effects of steam distillation. Two basic cases involved in the design of an opening in bedded rock are: 1) where the beds deflect from each other so as to be separated; and 2) where the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading the latter while reducing their own load. Analysis of case 1 is relatively simple, while the interference of the original deflection curves in case 2 complicates analysis of the latter. Figures and formulae are presented for determination of interference loading in this situation. The design of an opening in bedded rock involves two basic alternatives.1'2 In one case the beds deflect away from each other, so as to be separated from their neighbors; in the other case the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading it, while reducing their own load. This is shown in Fig. 1. The first case lends itself to a simple analysis, since the upper and lower boundaries of each beam remain a free surface. In the latter case, however, due to the interference of original deflection curves, the analysis is more complex. Earlier investigators of this interference problem solved it by making the tacit assumption that this type of loading was uniformly distributed along the beam's length. While there is no intuitive justification for this assumption, its use does lead to an approximate solution. Still, a more exact solution does not require this apparently unrealistic restriction. To achieve initial simplicity, the analysis will at first be limited to a two-bedded sequence, as in Fig. 2. Since both beams have identical end conditions and spans, the original deflections of their center lines are members of the same family of curves, as shown in Fig. 3. Therefore, if interference occurs at one point along their center lines, it will occur at every point. For convenience, the midspan point is that usually examined. AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

ThOUGH at present there is a wide range of possibilities for the quantitative determination of preferred orientations, pole figures of identical specimen material have not been determined by different methods as yet.''' In this paper a comparison of (Ill), (200), and (220) pole figures is presented which were obtained from a 95 pct cold-rolled high-purity cop- per sheet (99.9998 pct Cu), by three different methods. The three methods are: a) The combined X-ray reflection-transmission technique of plane samples by schulz3 and Decker, Asp, and Harker. 4 A Siemens texture goniometer was used. Over the last one hundred years the problem of assessing the efficiency of energy consumption in producing rock breakage has been studied by many investigators from a variety of viewpoints. Their contributions fall into three main categories: (1) those characterized by a priori assumptions of a relation between the energy required for fracture and the degree of fragmentation produced (e.g. Rittinged(l), Kick(2) Bond(3)); (2) those studying simple systems with controlled energy applications (Gross(4)?(5) ); (3) those treating operating data to develop practical relative measures of efficiency (Coghill(6), Taggart(7)). Closely involved in the efficiency problem is the characterization of size distributions produced by comminution. Unless an experimental size distribution can be approximated by a distribution function and its constants, it becomes difficult if not impossible to develop quantitative energy-particle size relationships. While many such functions have been proposed, none are both completely adequate and convenient. The simpler fonns usually describe only a part of the sizing data, while those which apply to a greater extent are cumbersome(8). The thesis underlying the study here reported can be stated as follows: Size reduction in a tumbling mill subjects ore particles to a relatively constant fracture-producing environment. The intensity of the forces is determined by such factors as the mass of the breaking bodies (rods, balls, rock), and the speed and dimensions of the shell. For a particular ore the extent of size reduction will depend both on the intensity and on the duration of exposure. The latter is the residence time in a batch mill, or is determined by the effective volume and the flow rate in a continuous mill. Size reduction can thus be regarded as a rate process in which the weight of material in size intervals varies as a function of grinding time. A method for the selection of the most suitable corrosion inhibitor for a particular system is given. The method involves the evaluation of surface passivity by means of copper ion displacement after the metal surface has been subjected to the corrosive atmosphere. The application of the method to the selection of suitable inhibitors for use in producing wells is described. Correlation with recognized laboratory tests has beet1 found to be good within the limitations of the test. The use of the test to evaluate inhibitor persistencc is described. INTRODUCTION Corrosion as it is associated with the industry shows wide variations in its qualitative as well as its quantitative aspects. This complicates the work of the corrosion engineer. In the past few years the efforts of the corrosion engineer have been further taxed by the large numbers of products being marketed as corrosion inhibitors by various manufacturers. These products are submitted to him together with a limited amount of data to support their use as inhibitors. The data are usually authentic and reliable yet all too often when these products are applied to an actual corrosive system the results are disappointing due to the ineffectiveness of the inhibitor and the corrosive system. The corrosion engineer must select a comparatively limited number of inhibitors for field trial from the large number available. The selection is usually made on the basis of a standardized laboratory test such as that adopted by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers or by field experience in an area; however, testing of this type is discouraging on large numbers of compounds, particularly in view of the specificity of environment. It has been an object of this work to devise a method which will allow the corrosion engineer to select the best inhibitor for a specific environment under field conditions. The test would of necessity be rapid and inexpensive. It would preferably eliminate the need for expensive and delicate instruments. STATEMENT OF THEORY The test as developed makes use of the fact that metal ions will be displaced from solution by metals having a more positive electrode potential. Thus, if an active iron surface is exposed to a solution of a copper salt, free copper will plate spontaneously on the iron surface as it is displaced from the salt solution by iron ions. If the iron surface is passified, as by coating with an insulating-type organic corrosion inhibitor, it is no longer capable of displacing the copper ions due to its own limited ionization. The result will be a change in the amount of copper plated upon exposure to a neutral copper salt solution. In practice it has been found possible to measure the magnitude of the alteration of the cell potential by determining the copper deposited on a standard iron surface under controlled conditions. This means that, as the film builds up, the resulting shift in the electrode potential tends to cause the iron surface to act more like a noble metal, resulting in a reduction in the cell potential to a point that copper will no longer plate spontaneously. Obviously, the salts of other metals such as silver, gold or platinum might be used for this operation; however, copper was selected because of the color difference of the plate, the comparatively low cost of copper salts and the ease of evaluation of the plated copper. Furthermore, its high cell potential provides a substantial driving energy. The determination of the copper is readily done colorimetrically by dissolving it in 5 per cent ammonium hydroxide solution containing 2 per cent potassium per-sulfate. The blue color of the copper ammonic complex ion so developed may be compared with standards prepared by dissolving known quantities of copper powder in the same reagent. In routine screening it is seldom desirable to determine the amount of copper plated. It is usually more important to determine the concentration of inhibitor required to prevent the plating of copper.

This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. The Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River is part of a vast geologic and hydrologic province. The abundance of water available is largely responsible for the agricultural history of the area and is perhaps the key factor in the rapidly accelerating trend toward industrialization. The multiple artesian aquifer systems that underlie the region and the alluvial aquifer along the Mississippi River are virtually undeveloped sources of fresh water in that they are yielding only a fraction of the water available. The potential yield of the 12 aquifer systems is estimated to be about 25,000 mgd (million gpd) of which only about 600 mgd is presently being withdrawn. The amount of water in storage in these systems is about 1600 trillion gal. Ground water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 ppm is generally available at depths of less than 1000 ft, and water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 1000 ppm is available in some places to depths of more than 3000 ft. Iron is the most common troublesome chemical constituent in the ground water. Water in varying amounts is also available from streams within the region. The amount of water which originates within the region and which leaves it as streamflow during a year averages about 50 million acre-ft (about 45,000 mgd). An additional 375 million acre-ft (about 340,000 mgd), which originated outside the region, leaves the region as streamflow during an average year. Some streams have considerable flow during periods of no precipitation and the water during these periods generally has a low dissolved-solids content. Large quantities of water from streams and waterbearing sands (aquifers) are available in the Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River. Most of the region is underlain by aquifer systems that will yield large quantities of water to wells, making ground water the most readily available source of fresh water. About 90% of the water used in the region is obtained from wells. Streams have been used primarily to dispose of, and dilute, wastes that have been dumped into them. The Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, and the lower parts of the Tombigee and Yazoo rivers also serve as a means of transportation. This nominally water-rich region receives from 48 to 56 in. of precipitation in average years and is crossed by several large rivers. The largest, the Mississippi River, is the western boundary of the region discussed in this paper. The economy of the region is basically agricultural, but industry has become increasingly important since World War 11. The diversification and mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a surplus of manpower, most of which is being absorbed by the expansion of industry. Further industrial expansion probably will occur because of the available manpower, natural resources and economical transportation. Increasing demands on available water supplies will be made and the future economic growth of the region will be largely dependent upon wise utilization and management of the water resources.

The present struggle for economic and industrial supremacy by the Communist world is against the United States, its main target, and the other Free World nations. The basis of industrial power is minerals, so the Communist nations are building up mineral production within their borders, often regardless of costs, and are acquiring quantities of mineral products from Free World countries for future use. They are contracting for additional supplies and advancing funds for the development of these quantities. A number of the less developed mineral producing countries of the Free World are being infiltrated by Communists and Communistic influence. This situation is well known, but as yet little has been done to oppose these activities or to awaken the public to their seriousness. The Communist countries are still far behind the Free World Nations in production of many essential minerals. But, shortages are being made up from Free World nations in exchange for petroleum, manganese ore, chromite and other products. Restrictions on shipments of strategic materials to Communist countries have not been maintained.

IT seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel rails,1 and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U S.
