The Bureau of Mines has developed computer software to study the effects of initiator scatter on all aspects of the blasting process. The software is useful because it is difficult to obtain actual initiator data, particularly the standard deviation which is needed to express initiator scatter. The new software is structured to allow blasters to answer the question: how precise must initiators be to insure a successful blast? Successful is defined statistically in terms of a confidence level. The software can be used with any possible design since there are no restrictions due to size or complexity.

This paper describes experience in designing and implementing casting blasts over the past fifteen years. Important design parameters such as powder factor, burden and spacing, blast pattern geometry, front row burden and toe distance, pit width versus height, blast length, explosive selection, millisecond delay timing and tie-in types are discussed.

There have been many different brands of high precision caps introduced on the US market in the last five years. High precision timing definitely effects the performance of the blast. One should be able to optimize fragmentation and minimize environmental effects with the use of high precision caps and selection of the proper time period. The consumer who purchases the caps may not be fully aware of the tolerances in firing times of caps used in the field. This paper will discuss results of field tests of cap tolerances from an independent study conducted by Precision Blasting Services.

Effect of each of these variables has been well characterized for ANFO. This paper presents results of underwater energy measurements for one watergel and one emulsion type of slurry explosive which were initiated by 3 types of initiators (one electric and two cords of different strength) in 2 and 3 inch diameter steel pipes. Results of this 2 x 3 x 2 factorial experiment show the effects of detonating cord on energy released by the watergel and the emulsion explosive. Effect of diameter and its interaction with cord strength have also been characterized for the two explosives.

The demolition of structures with explosive though most rapid, safe and efficient requires planned blast design parameters with respect to geometric and strength properties of the structure to be demolished. The paper, here deals with successtil demolition of three old bridge piers by different blast designs. These piers were 11 m tall and very close to the existing bridge, The plan distance of the old piers from the existing bridge varied between 43 m and 14,25 m. The paper also deals with the mathematical concepts for the causes of such action of demolition/dismantling of structures.

In this work, is being described the developing of the study for the demolition by controlled blasting project of a building of reinforced concrete, in the center of a spanish city. Synthetically, it is being analyzed the timing of the fall of the parts of the structure. This documentation is completed with a group of four photographs of the falling sequence and a film about several demolitions and the particular one described in this paper.

These cycled "prills" offer significant improvement in ANFO mixing time, detonation velocity performance, and heaving capabilities. The Bureau of Mines is studying blast delay timing influences on rock fragmentation in a series of tests that started in 3-ft concrete blocks, progressed to 45in-bench reduced-scale tests in massive dolomite, and has now included 22-ft-bench full-scale tests in a thin-to-thick horizontally bedded dolomite. This paper discusses the full-scale test results and how they compared to the concrete block and reduced-scale studies.

On September 7, 1994, a Burlington Northern coal train crashed into a parked train in the downtown Gillette, Wyoming rail yard. I would like to address two issues in regards to this accident. One, a slide presentation of the damage created by the accident and the resulting required clean-up and two, a simulation of "what if" had there been an explosion during the course of the crash.

Often blast damage litigation involves structural damage which clearly is not blast related. The fact that structures are observed to be damaged when blasting has taken place in the near vicinity of these structures does not necessarily mean that the damage was caused by blasting. If careful blasting and seismograph records were kept by the blaster which decisively indicate damage is not blast related, then other causes of structural damage need to be assessed. These include problematic soil characteristics and long-term changes in climate or subsurface soil moisture. This paper presents the evaluation process required to investigate soil problems leading to damage often attributed to blasting.

The main problem in blasting a fly-over spanning a main road is the brief time available for blasting and the removal of the debris, in order to minimize the ensuing traffic disruption in the public highway below. The blasting plan is consequently based on an extreme "time is money" concept, in which speed and public safety are predominant factors. On August 3, 1977 the 95th Congress passed Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This Act created the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), which was given the responsibility of formulating regulations to implement the Act. This paper explains the rationale behind the specific provisions of the final blasting regulations, which were published in volume 44, No. 50 of the Federal Register, dated March 13, 1979. The major items covered by the regulations include preblasting surveys, blasting schedules, protection of the public, ground vibration limits, the scaled distance equation, airblast limits, blasting procedures, and record keeping. The regulations are designed to protect the safety and well-being of the public and to protect buildings and structures such as wells, pipelines, and storage facilities from damage.

This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation of the shock wave energy transmission and reflection through boundary layers (joints, fractures) or between inhomogeneous geomedium with different physical properties. The conclusions drawn significantly clarify the dynamic failure mechanics because of shock wave energy transmission and reflection through different rock materials and their jointed interfaces. Thorough studies were performed to document the transient, two dimensional deformation characteristics, the normal and shear stress fields for inhomogeneous geomedium focusing on the influence of the internal geometrical shapes, relative density variations and packing of the grain boundaries.

Many technological advancements have been made in explosive products and applications over the last 15 years resulting in productivity and cost gains. However, the applications of total energy (engine horsepower) in the majority of rotary drilling technology, has remained virtually unchanged over that period. While advancements have been made in components, efficiency, and types of hydraulic systems used on drills, the application of current hydraulic technology to improve drilling productivity has not been interactive with end users. This paper will investigate how traditional design assumptions, regarding typical application of horsepower in current rotary drill systems, can actually limit productivity.

The work-principle method was developed for theoretically resolving toxic fumes from non-ideal charge formulations. The whole description of a wanted process refers to macroscopic changes resulting from removing and imposing constraints that work one at a time to chronologically render trajectory terminal (key) states. The trajectory resolution utilizes a thermodynamic quasi-potential or negative work function, and numeric results require some appropriate standard thermodynamic (equilibrium) reaction code TDRC. The underlying method is unable to restrict reactions, tailor the work output or resolve states within the trajectory transitions, so the trajectory terminology is used somewhat figuratively. The work-principle model has the working fluid (reaction material) interacting with a tremendous reservoir (chamber air and walls), while forecasting the work performed upon a mechanical agent.

This contribution reports an investigation of the blasting damage in the contour of an access ramp to a Swedish underground laboratory for nuclear waste related studies. Near zone vibration measurements were made for 7 rounds and the results converted to a site specific scaling law. A simple engineering correction for the influence of the charge length wee developed and the resulting equations used to predict the damage zone depths of three different drilling and charging patterns.

If dynamite is used in hot metal mines, it may be subject to decomposition, and the increase in nitroglycol vapour under the high temperatures causes bad headaches of workers. Also the explosives containing ammonium nitrate are very dangerous when mixed with sulfide ores at a high temperature!. Therefore we developed a heat-resistant water gel explosive which is safe to be handled at these hot metal mines.

Nearly all of the South African gold mining industry still uses fuse and igniter-cord initiation systems. Over the past 30 years numerous attempts at developing new initiation systems have not yielded a viable alternative. New initiation systems for narrow stopes are currently being developed by various concerns and the likelihood of these efforts producing feasible alternatives is greatly improved due to the recent advances in electronics technology. The greatest potential benefit of alternative initiation systems is increased production rates through improvements in accuracy and reliability of firing over that of fuse/igniter-cord. Another important feature is the capability of millisecond delay firing as this can lead to reduced stope cleaning times by way of enhanced rock throw and improved fragmentation characteristics.
