"Cutoff walls are frequently used to slow down or prevent seepage of water through and/or around dams. Cutoff wall is a type of seepage barrier structure designed to reduce the flow of water underneath temporary or main dam. There are number of techniques for the construction of cutoff walls including concrete, Jet grouting and permeation grouting. NHPC LTD, a premier Govt. of India undertaking has been instrumental in the hydropower development within the country & in nearby countries like Nepal & Bhutan since last four decades. NHPC LTD has completed more than 20 hydro-electric projects with total installed capacity of 6587MW (including capacity addition by JV- NHDC). In all these projects, different types of dams and spillways were constructed in not so benign to extreme challenging geological set up. There has always been challenge associated with the temporary diversion works. The project sites sometimes incur huge river bed excavations in case of concrete gravity dam founded on rock foundation at large depth. The challenges for minimizing the seepage have been well taken care by constructing the dedicated seepage barriers. The construction of cut-off walls have progressed from “conventional continuous trench backfilled with conventional concrete or plastic concrete” to “grout curtain”, to “jet grouting” to the “concrete cut-off wall” , the last being the most sophisticated & credible seepage barrier.The efficiency of the cut-off walls are monitored by the seepage quantity observed (reduction of the seepage flow), uplift pressures or exit gradients after construction of cut-off walls. For construction of the main concrete dam, required space is created by the river bed excavation for placing the dam foundation on sound rock. Sometimes there is deep river bed excavation from 30 to 40 m depth or even more as per the available rock profile. Temporary coffer dams are constructed for diverting the river flow through diversion tunnels / channels etc. In deep river bed excavation; there are high chances of the significant seepage through the coffer dam foundation / river bed material due to high hydraulic gradients. Seepage and piping are the main causes of the failure / damage of the temporary coffer dams. If the seepage quantity is too high, then it becomes difficult to handle it by dewatering in the dam pit. Dam concrete is required to be placed unhindered to have a monolithic construction of dam blocks & to have faster construction in the working season. Cut-off walls increase the seepage path considerably thus reducing the exit gradient and further reduction of the seepage thus helping in maintaining the seepage free area for working."

Historically the visual examination of drilled shafts to determine shape was typically done under dry conditions. Many engineers believe that by using a dry method of construction, the question of shape is minimized because they can visually examine the excavation. In fact, test data suggests that slurry stabilized shafts tend to perform better than similarly constructed dry shafts. Clearly, the uncertainty of the shaft shape is magnified when constructed under slurry. Recent advancements have allowed a mechanical caliper to determine shape in wet conditions, but can be limited by certain shaft anomalies. New sonar technology can determine shaft shape, volume and verticality. The value of sonar technology to the geotechnical and foundation industry at large in terms of quality assurance for clients/owners and quality control for drilled shaft contractors is significant. This presentation will discuss the development and process of sonar calipering technology as it relates to the geotechnical and deep foundation industry. Sonar calipering results presented may include images from the following types of projects: slurry walls, bridge piers, cofferdams and secant walls. The results identify shaft anomalies in a variety of slurry environments, from water and polymer mixes through mineral slurries. Real-time in-situ images and CAD drawings will be presented illustrating the advantages of good caliper data taken during construction. This presentation will appeal to the geotechnical and structural engineers, as well as those supporting the deep foundation industry at large.

Over the last decade, drilled and post-grouted micropile foundations have come to be increasingly relied upon for resisting seismic loads in building foundations on the West Coast. Micropiles have been successfully deployed in a range of soil conditions, in vertical as well as battered configurations, to support a variety of structural systems difficult soils. Their high load capacity in tension as well as in compression, their ability to be installed in confined spaces with minimal overhead clearance, and their ability to be directly tested in an installation have made them indispensable for seismic strengthening of existing structures. More recently, growing industry experience along with improvements in design guidelines have led to wider acceptance of micropiles among engineers and building officials. The increasing availability of the specialized materials, coupled with growing familiarity with drilling technologies among design-build contractors has made micropiles more cost-effective and competitive. For the first time, micropiles are finding applications in the construction of new buildings, where they are combined with shallow footings in hybrid foundations to efficiently resist seismic loads. These new applications rely on more intensive engineering analyses to evaluate the performance of micropile foundation systems and develop detailed requirements for design and construction. This paper describes the design approaches and the analytical methods for the seismic design of hybrid micropile foundations, and provides examples of recent construction projects that demonstrate the application.

"The Philadelphia Water Department is rehabilitating Belmont Raw Water Basin. As part of this work, a 500-ft long, temporary cofferdam was designed to retain 35 ft of combined water and soil at the western half during the reconstruction of the eastern half. A cofferdam that comprises two integral rows of sheet piles was selected to take advantage of the soil’s weight between the sheet piles for increased stability. To fine tune the design, a geotechnical investigation was carried out to verify the subsurface conditions and, in particular, the top of rock variations along the centerline of the cofferdam. A detailed finite element analysis was performed based on the subsurface findings and incorporating the construction sequence to evaluate the behavior of the cofferdam at the following stages: installation of tie rods to connect to the two rows of sheet piles; partial excavation and installation of tiebacks; complete excavation of the east basin, and demolition of the cofferdam. Inclinometers and survey markers were installed every 100 ft along the cofferdam and were monitored throughout construction. The deformation measurements were in good agreement with the finite element results.INTRODUCTIONThe Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) Belmont Raw Water Basin is located at the intersection of City Line and Belmont Avenues in Philadelphia, PA. The facility actually contains two raw water basins, east and west, separated by an earthen dividing dike. Water leakage at the bottom of the basins and through the dividing dike together with increasing demand for a larger storage capacity dictated the replacement of the wide earthen dike with new narrower concrete structure. The temporary cofferdam was designed for a two-year period to facilitate excavation support, water cutoff, removal of the existing earthen dike and replacing it with a new concrete dike. During this construction sequence, the water level in the west basin had to be maintained at or near its full capacity.Various excavation support systems were considered for this project prior to the selection of a double wall sheet pile cofferdam. Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the cofferdam and the new dividing dike. A typical cross section of the two structures is shown in Fig. 2. Double row sheet pile walls are commonly used as both temporary and permanent retaining systems in open water applications such as construction works, quaywalls, breakwaters and revetments for storing industrial waste as indicated by Ohori, et al. (1984), Ohori et al. (1988), and Khan, et al. (2001). There are many advantages to double row sheet pile systems as recognized by Ohori, et al. (1984; 1988): (1) It can be installed and removed in the presence of water easily and quickly; (2) it provides stability with small width to height ratio, utilizing the existing soils between the installed sheet pile rows; and (3) it serves well as a means for water cutoff. These advantages meet the specific project requirements."

Six case histories are presented in which tall, slender high rises are supported on high capacity minicaissons. The recent development of a high strength rebar cage has resulted in compressive loads of up to 3400 kips on 24 inch diameter minicaissons. Provisions in the pending NYC building code will allow borehole video inspection in lieu of load testing. The ?new? technology results from the marriage of several well established methods: rotary duplex well drilling, high capacity micropiles and high capacity reinforced concrete building columns.

As a part of Mumbai City Mega Drinking Water Project at Amar Mahal Tunnel-1 Ghatkopar East Mumbai, drinking water tunnels were proposed by MCGM from Amar Mahal to Trombay reservoirs, Amar Mahal to Wadala and further up to Parel. The pipeline has to be underground and laid at a depth of 5.5m. The initial proposal was to provide sheet piling to enable the safe excavation and installation of underground pipeline. However, installation of sheetpiles was practically not feasible due to the existing soil strata for driving the sheet piles. Hence, it was proposed to install micropiles instead of sheet piles. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with temporary struts for shoring protection works in this project.

"The installation of Bored Piles and Diaphragm Wall under slurry using tremie raises quality concerns on the integrity of concrete. It is vital to understand the effects on concrete integrity during concrete pouring process. This paper intends to unveil to what extent the compressive strength of the concrete pour is affected in contact with drilling fluid still. Another important angle of analysis proves whether the inclusion of solids particles of un-hydrated fluid could have impact on the concrete compressive strength. The testing comparing the response of concrete compressive strength when drilling fluid is included into the concrete mix altering the water/cement ratio by 5%, 20% and 30%. Comparative results are analysed between two different hydrated slurries namely sodium activated Bentonite and 3rd generation synthetic polymer.1. INTRODUCTIONSoil stabilization is the base for a successful deep foundation execution. The G3 System Slurry developed by Ground Engineering Operations (GEO), with its third generation polymer, namely PolyMud®, is an innovative and unique alternative to the mineral based slurries for soil stabilization, enhancing the quality and integrity of the underground foundation structures. It optimises the production rate of work progress and cost as well. At the same time, PolyMud® slurry is proven to be environmentally friendly.Guaranteeing the maximum quality of the foundation elements according to the initial design is one of the most important objectives and a concern for the foundations contractors. In order to fulfil the project expectations in this aspect, any incident that could compromise the designed concrete integrity and capacity must be avoided.GEO, has carry out its own research regarding effects on the concrete compression results if drilling fluid intermixes with fresh concrete while pouring. To shed light in this regard, GEO, in collaboration with CML (Concrete Materials Laboratory) Sdn. Bhd., carried out empiric tests that analyse this particular event from different perspectives, bringing up the corresponding results that will be studied and commented in this article."

This paper presents information on design analyses of large diameter piles using conventional p-y curves as recommended by the American Petroleum Institute (API RP2A, 1993). API RP2A adopted the soft clay criterion developed by Matlock (Matlock, 1970) based on 12.75-inch piles. API RP2A also adopted the API sand criteria originally introduced by Reese, Cox, and Koop (Reese et. al., 1974) based on 24-inch piles. Since Matlock and Reese published their original papers, there have been several publications recommending changes to their p-y criteria, especially regarding the need to adjust the Matlock p-y curves for pile diameter effects. The following sections attempt to clarify the issue of diameter effects on p-y curves.

This paper presents a case study of large diameter continuous flight auger (CFA) piles and drilled shafts utilized for foundation support of a series of heavily loaded cement plant structures at the Suwannee American Cement (SAC) Plant in Branford, Florida. The high loads and exacting total and differential settlement criteria when combined with a highly variable subsurface geology provided a challenging design scenario. Fully instrumented static pile load tests were performed to determine design parameters in the variable weathered limestone bedrock. Ultimate side friction values ranged from 2 to 8 tsf within the limestone, resulting in the requirement for CFA piles up to one meter (approximately 40 inches) in diameter and socket lengths of up to 40 feet. At several localized areas, the limestone bedrock was in excess of 60 feet below grade, requiring the use of cased drilled shafts to depths on the order of 80 to 90 feet. An integral part of the production pile installation was the use of instrumentation to monitor drilling and concreting parameters. Calibration of drill rates, torque and auger rotation with rock quality was performed to allow monitoring of the soil stratigraphy at each pile location. When combined with the results of the instrumented load testing, the monitoring of drilling parameters allowed confirmation that sufficient socket length was achieved within the quality of rock present at each and every pile location.

This paper describes the technology behind the development of an automated energy control system for a diesel pile hammer. Some background is given on experience using an energy monitoring system on the Route 1/I-95 interchange in Alexandria, Virginia. An adjustable hammer throttle and feedback from an energy monitoring system was then used to create a fully automated hammer energy control system. The performance of this system is described in reference to a piling project in Canada where the automated energy control system was used to obtain an unprecedented level of quality control and assurance ? data and graphs from the project are presented. The hammer energy control system (ECS) was used to successfully control and maintain a prescribed impact energy for the diesel hammer. This paper presents the first ever results from a truly automated diesel pile hammer and points to a new direction in quality control and assurance in pile driving.

One of the most important topics in the construction industry is the building of railway embankments. Being such a delicate and significant structure, it is crucial to properly design the embankment and build it while adhering to all statutory criteria and design guidelines. A railway embankment's subsoil condition and fill material, groundwater table, dynamic and static loads during operation, and embankment geometry are some of its most crucial design considerations. This paper discusses the likely causes of the collapse of a railway embankment in eastern India as well as the suggested rehabilitation scheme. It was observed that an embankment collapsed in the aforementioned area during a inccesent rain. Along with the side shifting of a cantilever retaining wall that was positioned at the bottom of the embankment, the embankment next to the railroad track settled vertically. According to the available geotechnical report, the sub soil strata in half of the area adjacent to the embankment profile, where the embankment height gradually decreases from maximum height, is stiff to hard clay with an undrained cohesion value of around 50 kpa followed by dense sand, and the sub soil strata in the other half is soft clay with an undrained strength of 15 kpa. As a result, in the rainy season due to the sudden increase in the water table, the self-weight of the embankment increased and further caused the under-laying soft clay to get squeezed away and settle. Due to this squeeze/settlement effect of the soft clay layer, the retaining wall got disturbed along with the generation of an undulated embankment top profile. As a remedial measure, it is proposed to construct a contiguous bored pile wall at the toe of the embankment to stabilize the slope, and additionally, compaction grouting is recommended beneath the embankment to improve the soft clay. In order to carry out the analysis, certain commercial geotechnical software like Slide, Wallap, and Plaxis 2D are used. The factor of safety of the embankment slope considering the above restoration scheme is adequate under static and seismic conditions.

"Construction of basement floors has become necessary to meet the requirement of parking in office and residential complexes and in hospitals for radiotherapy treatment. Important projects coming up in Kolkata are mostly in closer proximity of residential buildings, office buildings and historical monuments. Sheet piling is mostly used as temporary shoring system during construction. Deep excavation in urban environment creates great problem related to construction induced vibration due to driving of sheet piles for basement, pile driving etc. which raises the chances of damage of adjacent buildings and nearby structures. Vibratory sheet-pile driving is the most common method of sheet pile installation. The knowledge of induced vibration due to this phenomenon is still very deficient. This paper presents the analysis of measured vibration data collected from different sites of Kolkata with varying soil profile. Typical two case studies of sheet pile and pile driving has been presented and the vibration values are analysed. The responses of the vibration are reported in terms of peak particle velocities (PPV). To evaluate the effects of vibration due to pile driving two aspects have been considered: the effect of the energy entering the ground from the pile and the effect of the soil condition.INTRODUCTIONIn urban areas infrastructure development projects are mainly located adjacent to existing structures like residential buildings, offices and historical structures. The construction work of such project influences the surrounding environment as well as human perception (Wiss 1981). During the construction of basement for residential complexes and hospitals sheet piling is mostly used as temporary shoring system or as to support the earth mass. The vibration induced due to driving of piles and sheet piles have been presented herein. Deep excavation projects close to existing structures increase the concern of environmental impact. For this reason the vibration assessment and prediction has become a subject of great interest. It is important to develop a site specific model for predicting the ground vibration resulting from pile and sheet pile driving at the construction sites. The developed model gives the efficacy to guide the engineer to select the construction methodology ensuring the safety of the surrounding structure. The model developed here is site specific and the parameters that has been used are dependent on the soil condition and the energy source."

"Grouted helical piles allow significant increase in pile capacity with low additional cost over that of conventional helical piles. They can be particularly advantageous in sites where installation disturbance can reduce or even eliminate the pile shaft resistance. For helical piles with slender shafts, a grout column offers increased buckling resistance under compression loading, and may reduce the potential settlement required to mobilize the bearing component of their plates. This paper investigates the performance of grouted helical piles installed in loose sand. Grouted helical piles were constructed and tested in a controlled laboratory environment. Helical piles with hollow pipe shaft and single helix were grouted during installation. The grout was injected into the soil under high pressure through two nozzles placed above the piles helices. The load test results showed significant improvement in the performance and load carrying capacity of the helical pile due to the formation of a cylindrical grout column along the entire shaft leading to a higher shaft resistance contribution to the total pile capacity. The results suggest that grouted helical piles with slender hollow shaft could be used to support large structural loads. INTRODUCTIONHelical piles are widely used as a deep foundation system for different engineering applications. They represent an attractive foundation option because of their cost effectiveness, ease of installation even in limited access areas, low levels of noise and vibrations, and their ability to be installed through ground water without casing. In addition, they allow immediate loading upon installation. Helical piles are installed into the ground by applying a mechanical torque to the pile head. The installation torque monitoring provides a kind of quality control during the construction of helical piles. It could be used in predicting the ultimate pile capacity using several capacity-torque correlations (Livneh and Elnaggar 2008; and Hoyt and Clemence 1989).However, helical piles installation can cause soil disturbance within the annular zone affected by the pile helices. This disturbance can introduce fissures within the pile cylindrical failure surface (Vesic 1971; Mooney el al. 1985; and Zhang 1999). Thus, the shear strength of the soil decreases along the affected zone. Bagheri and El Naggar (2013) evaluated the installation effects of helical piles in sand. They reported that as the helical blade proceeds into the ground, sand within the cylindrical path circumscribed by the helices experiences torsional and vertical shearing accompanied by sand displacement and stress changes. This process is more pronounced in the case of multi-helices and large diameter anchors. Bagheri and El Naggar (2016) evaluated the installation effects of helical piles in structured clay. They indicated that the behavior of the helical pile and its capacity are significantly affected by the degree of soil de-structuring induced by the penetration of the pile shaft and helices. In addition to the installation disturbance, helical piles have other drawbacks including; high potential settlement required to fully mobilize the bearing component of their plates, low buckling resistance of their slender shafts, and the incomplete rigidity of the coupling joints along the pile shaft that allow some lateral movement under compression loading (Vickars and Clemence 2000)."

"In recent years, the Deep Mixing Method has increasingly been applied for the construction of earth and water retaining structures. From practice, it has been experienced that there is a real need to develop execution and design rules adapted to the function of the soil mix wall (retaining wall, water barrier, foundation solution or a combination) including the temporary or permanent character of the application. Based on the results of the BBRI Soil Mix project (2009-2013), a design approach has been developed in collaboration with the SBRCURnet. The present paper briefly discusses the principles of this design approach which takes into account the function of the soil mix wall and the characteristics of the soil mix material. The interaction between the soil mix material and the steel reinforcement can be considered in the calculations depending on the function of the soil mix wall. Design and quality control requirements are given in function of the application and take the lifetime of the structure into account. Durability aspects of the soil mix material are therefore considered in the present design approach.INTRODUCTIONSince several decades, the deep mixing method is used for ground improvement works. A more recent application is the use of soil mix as structural elements such as in the case of the earth-water retaining soil mix walls. Since 2000, due to the economic and environmental advantages of the method, this particular application has shown an amazing growth in Belgium and in the Netherlands. A typical excavation (16 m depth), realized with CSM (Cutter Soil Mix) panels, is shown in Fig. 1. For temporary applications, the questions related to the mechanical characteristics of the material, its permeability and its adherence with steel have been investigated with success within the framework of the BBRI Soil Mix project (2009- 2013) (see Denies et al. 2012 for more details). The durability of the soil mix material remains a complex topic while permanent applications are more and more observed in practice. In order to define an obvious design approach, it was necessary to clarify the potential functions of soil mix walls and to establish the requirements related to their design and construction. The BBRI (in Belgium) and SBRCURnet (in the Netherlands) have therefore worked together to publish guidelines in the form of a handbook titled ‘Soil Mix Walls’ (publication foreseen in 2015). In this handbook, a methodology is proposed for the design of the soil mix walls for which the interaction between steel and soil mix can possibly be taken into account dependent upon the application. Each potential function of the soil mix wall is described (e.g. earth retaining wall, cut-off wall, etc.) and the temporary or permanent character of the application is always considered."

"Ductile Iron Piles (DIPs) are a proven, viable alternative to conventional piles, and for the past five years have been successfully used throughout New England. The installation process of DIPs lends itself to both large and small projects. Because of their installation efficiency they provide a substantial cost savings over drilled micro piles. Several New England projects (both end bearing and friction) will be evaluated, focusing on the installation and design procedures.BackgroundThe driven ductile cast iron pile (DIP) is a simple, fast and highly effective pile system. Over the last 30 years over 10 million feet of this pile system has been installed worldwide predominantly in Europe. DIPs are a prefabricated driven pile system utilizing high strength ductile iron pipes which are manufactured using a spun-cast process having outside diameters of 4 5/8” and 6 5/8 inches. The standard pile lengths are 16.4 feet long. The pipes are manufactured with a tapered socket with an internal shoulder for full engagement at the top and a tapered spigot at the bottom. The individual pile sections can be connected with this Plug and Drive® connection to drive a pile of any length.(see figure 1)The DIP system’s inherent advantage is the simplicity of the installation process. The piles are driven to refusal or to a required penetration depth with the use of a high-impact highfrequency hydraulic hammer (ie. Breaker hammer). In most applications the hydraulic hammer is mounted on an appropriately sized excavator (see Photo 2). At the completion of driving the pile, the pile is cut off (see photo 5) and the remaining section of pile is fitted with the appropriate driving shoe and serves as the lead section for the next pile. Being able to reuse the cut off section, yields minimal if any pile shaft waste. The pile is then fitted with an appropriate pile cap plate to receive the load from the superstructure."

Installation of a new scalping station with bunker, apron feeder, scalping screen, ramp -retaining wall and approach bridge was planned in an existing integrated complex of phosphate fertilizer at a remote place in West Africa. Rock phosphate ROM, transported from mines by a combination of 100 Ton and 150 Ton dumper, would be fed to a steel bunker having capacity of 180 m3. Different options were studied for retaining wall at the junction of ramp and approach bridge. Initially options with conventional RCC Retaining Wall, Gravity Retaining Wall with Precast Concrete Blocks and Reinforced Earth walls were studied. Option with Reinforced Earth was selected as this option was much more cost effective compared to other options. But real engineering challenges cropped up when competent execution contractors were not available nearby the site. To minimize the cost, an innovative option with Stepped Retaining wall was then studied. Geotechnical parameters of native soils, selected for the construction of the approach ramp were determined and it was found that with available poor geotechnical parameters of the native soils, design of stepped retaining wall would not be feasible with respect to available bearing capacity, subjected dead load, live load, operational load and earth pressure. A conscious effort was then made to make the design feasible by improving the geotechnical parameters of the retained earth of ramp near the retaining wall. In view of that, mix design with locally available materials like Silexite, Sand, Laterite, Gravel and Silt at different proportions was made and samples were tested in the laboratory to determine relevant geotechnical parameters. Based on the test results, a suitable mix was selected that had high shear strength, enhanced bearing capacity and improved coefficient of earth pressures. Design of stepped retaining wall was then made with the selected construction materials and construction completed. The plant was successfully commissioned in December. 2021.

"Numerical analyses were performed to analyze the behavior of two different type of suction piles (mono type and group type) under various soil layer conditions (uniform silty clay layer, uniform silty sand layer, and two-layer deposit consisting of clay and sand layers) and lateral loading locations (top, middle, and bottom of the suction pile). According to the results, mono suction pile shows maximum resistance when load is applied on its middle, regardless of the soil layer conditions, while group suction piles varies significantly according to the allowance on head rotation. When head rotation is allowed, the behavior of group type piles become similar to the behavior of mono suction pile. Whereas, when rotation is prevented, resistance is maximized when load is applied on the top head. Moreover, group suction piles show higher efficiency regardless of the ground condition and geological stratum. For further advances, concrete block on the top of group suction piles are suggested as an effective alternative method to prevent partial rotation and maximize ground resistance for group suction piles.IntroductionWith the development of offshore technology, applications and real site installations of suction piles are increasing significantly nowadays. They are generally used as mooring anchors in various floating structures, marine platforms, and offshore wind turbines. According to its convenience in installation and removal, suction type foundations are becoming good alternatives for deep ocean support systems. The bearing capacity is similar to the bearing behavior of ordinary offshore structures (piles or drilled shafts). The most common use of suction caissons is anchors for catenary mooring lines, where the chain angle at the mudline is close to zero (Randolph, 2002; Sharma, 2004).Recently, it is reported that a huge isolated single suction pile can be replaced by a group of moderatesized suction piles (Randolph et al. 2004). A single monopile is easy to be produced and installed in site. It is expected that monopile foundation is not applicable for deep depths because it has a limitation on penetration according to its huge side skin area (i.e. friction). Moreover, stiffness requirements sometimes render thicker pile wall conditions which are impractical to be produced."

The City of Manchester is hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games. A world class Stadium with a 38,000 capacity was commissioned for a site located close to the City Centre. The Stadium location is in an area that was derelict and in need of regeneration and it is envisaged that the Stadium will be the spur for this. The industrial and residential history of the site has left a legacy of buried foundations together with chemically contaminated soils. This Made Ground deposit overlies Glacial Deposits which in turn overlie bedrocks of the Central Manchester Coalfield. Coal mining has taken place from at least 1761 leaving several worked seams and shafts. In order to support the stadium, 1159 conventional augured piles of 600 to 1200mm diameters were used. This paper will deal primarily with the piling operations and testing, but will also discuss the coal seam treatment with respect to piling. A substantial trial pile test programme was carried out together with 11 static load tests on contract piles. The results of the pile tests will be discussed and conclusions drawn.

Results from full-scale loading tests showed the use of the dynamic increasing energy test (DIET) to verify the capacity of deep foundations. This method allows the measurement of dynamic resistance - displacement curve and the prediction of the static resistance -displacement curve of the pile-soil system. The comparison between the use of DIET versus the static load test is also considered herein. This work was divided in two different phases, the first accomplished in Salvador (Bahia) and the second in Brasilia (Federal District), both in Brazil. The first phase consisted of field loading tests carried out on piles comprised by an approximate 10 to 12 meters thick deposit of fine saturated sand, overlying a stiff clay layer, which is found in certain areas of the Brazilian Northeast. Two metallic (rail track) piles were field loaded in this site. One of them was dynamically tested and the other was statically tested. The second site belongs to the Post Graduate Program of the University of Brasilia. It is comprised by an approximate 8 to 14 meter think deposit of porous clay, overlying a hard strata of saprolitic state. In this site a unique precast driven centrifuged pile was tested. The DIET procedure has demonstrated to be a tool of fast execution and low cost (if compared to static load test). It is a promising procedure to evaluate the behavior of pile-soil system.
