The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.

A low-grade disseminated nickel sulphide serpentinite ore from W.A. had a relatively high permeability after drying. Various techniques indicated that the permeability resided within a fine network of fibrous vein- lets and especially within coarse cracks along which the sulphides lay. The ore minerals were therefore open to selective extraction by chemical leaching. A IM ammonia-7.8 wt.o "ammonium carbonate" solution, oxygenated at 1 bar oxygen pressure and about 23¦C, released nickel, copper and cobalt from the sulphides, leaving a permeable residue of goethite, while calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations remained negligible in the leachant. The nickel and copper was electrodeposited directly from the pregnant liquor in a deposit which included 16.5 wt.% sulphur. Enhanced copper/ nickel ratios early in the extraction suggested that valleriite (not amenable to flotation) was leached preferentially. Th$ controlling influence of the pore structure was demonstrated by the dependence of leaching rates on the size of the ore particles used, and on the measured porosity of different ore samples. A 2mm size was probably the optimum for exposing sulphides to the leachant. Leaching was accelerated by increasing the temperature and oxygen pressure.

There has been increased focus in Australia on large diameter raise boring for ventilation shafts and orepass excavation in good quality, brittle, highly stressed rock. As mining in many parts of Australia progresses to deeper levels, more vertical openings are being excavated in highly stressed ground conditions. However, whilst shafts have been successfully raise bored in highly stressed rock, it is often at a significantly increased risk of loss or damage to inhole equipment. It is important for both mine owners and contractors to have an appreciation of these risks at the planning and tendering phases of raise boring contracts. This paper provides an understanding of the risks associated with large diameter raise boring and a review of methods to predict failure in highly stressed rock.

Reflectance spectroscopy has become an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. However, there are few reported cases where the technique has been applied to the Hamersley Province channel iron deposits (CID). The Bonnie Creek CID, located ÿ140 km north of Newman in Western Australia, represents one of a number of CIDs recently discovered in the Hamersley Province. Reflectance spectroscopic analysis using the CSIRO HyLoggerÖ automated scanning system, in conjunction with X-ray diffraction and compositional analysis, was used to characterise and map the ore and gangue mineralogy in CID drill core. Using CSIROÆs spectral mineral characterisation scripts, it was possible to map the downhole distribution of the Fe-oxide abundance, hematite:goethite ratio and the gibbsite and kaolinite abundance. Spectral estimates of kaolinite abundance were found to be closely related to loss on ignition measurements at 650¦C and the spectral kaolinite abundance index provided a reliable estimate of the total weight percentage Al2O3 content. In addition, downhole HyLoggerÖ scanning of diamond drill core reliably mapped the distribution of kaolinite as supported by coincidentally elevated contents of alumina and silica. Furthermore, spectrally-derived estimates of iron oxide abundance were well related to assayed Fe wt per cent contents and use of the spectral iron oxide mineral index mapped the distribution of the goethite:hematite ratio, and demonstrated that material logged as high-grade ore in the Bonnie Creek CID was predominantly goethite-rich.CITATION:Wells, M and Hogan, P, 2013. The Queensland Government, via the special purpose company vehicle û City North Infrastructure Pty Ltd û is currently developing BrisbaneÆs Airport Link underground toll road and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron).Airport Link is a predominantly underground toll road planned between BrisbaneÆs northern suburbs, the airport and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) frame. The Northern Busway forms part of BrisbaneÆs expanding busway network, sections of which will be jointly delivered with Airport Link. Airport Link will connect the North-South Bypass Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road network at Bowen Hills to the northern arterials of Gympie Road and Stafford Road at Kedron and Sandgate Road and the East-West Arterial in the cityÆs north-east. The Northern Busway is a two-lane, two-way bus-only roadway proposed to connect the existing Inner Northern Busway at Herston with Windsor, Lutwyche, Kedron, Chermside, Aspley and Bracken Ridge. Airport Link and Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) is one of the largest infrastructure projects planned in the first phase of the State GovernmentÆs South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program. The paper will provide an overview of the projects, including a discussion on the technical and environmental aspects as well as the procurement of the Airport Link as a public private partnership.

On the basis of measurements of selected raw materials engineering concepts for the use of this method in the mining industry as an innovative system for horizon control of mining machines will be described and the most important analysis parameters, influencing factors and interference variables are presented.

Many Southern African mining operations produce mine water which is beneficially and productively utilised on the mine sites and to support other water uses. Mine water treatment typically takes place within the context of integrated mine water management involving pollution prevention, waste minimisation, recycling and reuse as well as river discharges. Development of new and improved mine water treatment has focused on the neutralisation of metals removal, desalination of high sulfate waters and passive treatment. Mine water neutralisation processes now incorporate a combination of natural limestone and lime treatment, as well as features to maximise gypsum precipitation. The South African CSIR developed a suite of limestone-based neutralisation processes, which include reuse of CO2 and CaCO3 generated in the process. Desalination of high sulfate mine water is typically done using one of the following technologies:biological sulfate removal with different approaches to the handling of the sulfide generated in the process, and ultrafiltration (UF)/reverse osmosis (RO) treatment with different approaches to the handling and disposal of the brine. The current research and development focus is the separation and recovery of saleable products from the treatment residues and brine streams.

Water is a limited and precious resource in Australia. Because of the increasing demand for water from all sectors of the economy and the variability in supply, efficient management of water resources is of vital importance. The national water reform agenda has provided a strong impetus to all states and territories to progressively move towards more efficient and sustainable water management. The Queensland Water Act 2000 is the legislative framework for providing water for the environment and for planning for the security of supply to water users. The comprehensive water planning process prescribed in the Act results in new tradeable water allocations that are separate from land. These water allocations are well specified and can be traded on a permanent or temporary basis. Trading of water allows it to move to its highest value use, thereby encouraging the most efficient distribution of this limited resource. In addition to transferring ownership of water allocations, it is also possible to change the attributes of the allocation, such as the location from which water may be taken. Changes to water allocations are subject to approval from the resource manager. Pre-testing allows for certain changes to be approved very quickly, making the trading process more streamlined and cost effective. Temporary trades, or seasonal water assignments, currently account for the majority of water trades in Queensland. However, permanent trading activity is expanding steadily as old water entitlements are converted to tradeable water allocations and as the market matures. The permanent trading market provides significant opportunities to the mining sector. It allows mining companies to buy water allocations at market prices without compromising environmental outcomes or causing third party impacts.

An investigation was carried out at a US underground mine to characterise diesel aerosols and to asses the effects of various control technologies on the concentrations and properties of particulate matter and gases emitted by heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment. This study was dedicated to evaluating the impact on mine air quality of contemporary diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems installed on mining equipment. Additional efforts were made to assess the effect of blended biodiesel fuels, yellow grease and soy, ultra-low sulfur fuel, a fuel emulsion and of selected diesel oxidation catalysts on air quality and emissions. The carbon analysis performed on the collected samples showed that the tested DPF systems reduced the mass concentrations of elemental carbon in mine air by between 70 per cent and 92 per cent. In addition, TEOM measurements, collected during these tests, showed that the total diesel particulate matter concentration in the mine air was reduced by greater than 65 per cent when DPF systems were used. The tested biodiesel blends were found to reduce elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by between 49 per cent and 33 per cent, for the B20 (20 per cent biodiesel/80 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease respectively and between 66 per cent and 56 per cent for the B50 (50 per cent biodiesel/50 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease, respectively. The water-in-diesel fuel emulsion was shown to reduce elemental carbon concentrations by as much as 85 per cent. NO2 measurements showed an increase in the maximum concentrations of NO2 when catalysed DPF systems were used instead of mufflers.

A glasshouse experiment was set up to investigate arsenic uptake in rye corn grown in different arsenic rich substrates. Sods of material were taken from various locations and planted with rye corn seeds. The plants grew for 13 weeks after which time the above ground biomass was harvested. Analysis of the rye corn plants showed a narrow range of arsenic concentrations, which did not reflect the arsenic contents of the soil. Comparison of the results from this study with previous work showed the glasshouse rye corn to have lower arsenic concentrations in above ground biomass than rye corn grown in field conditions. The environmental conditions present on the tailings and water-rock interactions were considered the main factors involved with the difference in arsenic uptake between field studies and the glasshouse study. This suggests that bioavailability processes are influenced by a variety of factors and cannot necessarily be predicted by the use of soil factors or glasshouse trials alone as is often done when planning phytoremediation work and mine shut down.

Copper and gold mineralisation at Batu Hijau is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed in close spatial and temporal association with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. To its advantage with respect to the study and better understanding of the evolution of the porphyry system, Batu Hijau has comparatively minor late alteration and mineralisation overprints. This paper summarises results of detailed geological logging, petrographic studies and geochemical analyses of diamond drill cores from the deeper sections of the Batu Hijau porphyry system (ie its roots). New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.

Renison Limited produces high and low grade tin concentrates at an annual rate of 5000 tonnes of contained tin metal. In spite of the fine average cassiterite grain size, emphasis is placed on gravity concentration methods to produce a high grade final product. Cassiterite flotation is considered and operated as a gravity circuit scavenger responsible for approximately 15 percent of recovered tin metal as a fine grained low grade concentrate. Metallurgical problems mainly result from ore-type variations which may be aggravated by a number of circulating loads. The rationalisation of circuitry is being studied to provide more effective control by operators and to allow exploitation of current control and modelling techniques.

In recent years there have been significant developments in the tech- nology available for blast monitoring, analysis and simulation. Progress in these areas has been achieved through research conducted by explo- sives manufacturers and independent research groups from universities and mining companies. Miners are increasingly keen to exploit this tech- nology to help them design blasts which make optimum use of explo- sives to produce easily excavated muckpiles for the minimum possible cost. The art of blast design in the future will increasingly depend on an adequate understanding of the nature of the rock mass, the perfor- mance of explosives and the characteristics required of the muckpile to suit the chosen excavation machinery. Despite recent advances in blast simulation and the prediction of blasting performance, the best way to determine how a particular explosive will function relative to other explosives is to conduct properly designed and monitored field trials. This paper discusses recent work at Mount Thorley Colliery which demonstrates that field blasting trials can be monitored and analysed to provide quantitative data on the relative performance of bulk explosives. Techniques used in the trials included the sampling and analysis of explo- sives, insitu measurement of VOD, monitoring of near and far field vibra- tions, high speed and still photography and survey measurement of muckpiles. These techniques provided data for the analysis of throw, swell, fragmentation and burden movement together with data on the consistency and robustness of different explosive products. The blasting trials allowed both the shock and heave energy of various explosives to be observed in the field and led to the derivation of design rules for the use of differ- ent explosives at the mine.

A significant part of the reserves of the Southern Coalfield lie beneath major water storages and their impounding dam structures. One of the functions of the NSW Government's Dams Safety Committee is to specify the particular mine layouts which can be used beneath the stored waters according to certain guidelines. A study was made of examples of the two different methods of extraction used under the stored waters as proposed by the mining company according to the guidelines and approved by the Dams Safety Committee. Using both pillar monitoring and mathematical modelling approaches it was shown that the recovery of coal from these layouts could be improved while still ensuring the long term stability of both the underground support pillars and the body of the strata. The integrity of the water storages and their impounding structures would therefore not be Affected.

Sampling of grain, animal feeds (solid and liquid) including important mineral mixtures in the Danish agricultural sector is subject to an ongoing investigation with the objective of improving existing (suboptimal) sampling procedures. Results from the first six months are presented here; the project will continue for two more years and will include international collaborators (Australia and Canada). The Danish authorities have instituted a system of control analysis, which contains a set of mandated sampling and analysis methods. From a preliminary survey it was concluded that in fact all of the existing sampling procedures are not optimised in the light of Pierre GyÆs Theory of Sampling (TOS).

Mount Isa Mines has four mining operations in Mt Isa with the X41 and Enterprise Mines producing copper and the Lead Mine and George Fisher producing lead zinc and silver. Each stream contributes ore to their respective concentrator at a feed rate and therefore metal ratio set out by the monthly schedule. Mine Planning and scheduling lead to a sales and operating plan (S&OP) and revenue projections which ultimately derives actual revenue /tonne and therefore cost/tonne. At Mount Isa, both the copper and lead/zinc streams produce ore from relatively new operations to be blended with material from more mature operations. It is critical to accurately predict the metal contribution from each operation in order to gauge the relative performance of each mine. Development mining ore contributions are estimated and reconciled, as are stope and bench sources. Performance is continually measured and assessed during extraction and grade adjustments are made to account for underbreak, overbreak and design modifications. It is critical to not understate or overstate the contribution from one operation relative to the other as this can produce a false picture of operational performance. Identifying process improvements are key to improving the business overall. Ore from the lead stream passes 17 measurement stations and two midstream reconciliation points before delivery to the heavy media plant (HMP), where the metallurgical circuit begins. From this point two concentrates are produced. A zinc concentrate for treatment off site and a lead concentrate for further on site processing. The lead smelter takes 100 per cent of Isa concentrates as well as a contribution from BHP-BillitonÆs Cannington Mine.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. A mining companyÆs approach to managing the risk of theft of explosives and initiating devices should be underpinned by an organisation-wide policy developed with internal and external consultation. It should be based on the principles of sound proactive risk management, planning, monitoring and remedial action. This paper aims to provide mining (and construction)organisations with the rationale and many of the tools they need to control explosive security risks. As with all legislative compliance, they are best managed by incorporating the statutory and legal requirements into company policies, management systems and plans, operating procedures and culture. This is the approach that has been adopted in this paper. Trends we should expect: more prescriptive legislation and stricter government regulations; enhanced enforcement and more prosecution; more sophisticated detection systems, eg airports; additional compliance costs; additional vigilance on record keeping; improved risk awareness and risk communication; wider use of explosives policies, management systems and plans; and additional security staff with investigative skills.It should be noted that mining companies will be required to play their part in reducing the likelihood of explosives, intended for mining purposes, being wrongfully used to threaten, hold to ransom or to injure individuals or members of the public or to produce property damage. This will be done by putting in place safeguards to reduce the risk of theft of explosives while they are under their control. On that basis, this is a business risk assessment rather than a hazard risk assessment. A conclusion of this paper is that mining companies can and should play their part in reducing the supply of explosive materials that can then be used for illegal activities. In fact, mining companies have always had this duty, but now the stakes are higher û æcomplacency no longerÆ.
