The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

In the last 40 years, New Zealand has developed a number of liquid- dominated geothermal steam fields, for electricity generation and indus- trial process steam. New technologies were developed, and in this work, New Zealand led the world. The policy of full publication of the results, in a wide range of sciences, provided a reservoir of detailed data defin- ing the geology, size and shape, and the chemical and physical regime, of many geothermal fields and their constituent parts. The discovery of precious and base metal deposits /precipitates in geothermal drill cores and steamfield equipment, suggested a clear link- age with epithermal mineral fields in general, and with that of the Coromandel (Hauraki) Region in particular. Further work on geothermal/ epithermal relationships have implied that the techniques, developed to obtain an understanding of geothermal fields, could be applied also to epithermal mineral exploration. This work is developing fast, and is now proceeding in many coun- tries. Future work may show that the presumed relationship between geothermal and epithermal deposits may be applicable in the wider con- texts of all hydrothermal deposits, and possibly in many other minera- lised areas with volcanic "country rocks".

In view of the lack of phase equilibria data of vanadium-bearing oxide system and the desirability of them for design or optimisation of vanadium extraction process, the phase equilibria relationships of V2O3-FeO-SiO2-CaO(15 mass per cent) system were determined experimentally and then an isothermal section phase diagram of this system was constructed. Totally, 81 samples of different composition were equilibrated at 1623 K for 48 hours in iron crucible under Ar atmosphere. The equilibrated samples were quenched quickly in cold water, and then the phase constituents of all the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) measurements.

It is only in the past decade or so that industrial exploitation of biological resources and techniques has become regarded as a distinct discipline. Commonly referred to as Biotechnology, it embraces biochemistry, microbiology and the engineering sciences and is mainly aimed at the biological conversion of suitable raw materials into desired end products. The catalytic agents are more often than not bacteria although other micro-organisms such as fungi are used. The range of micro-organisms used is wide and the choice depends upon the desired end product, which in turn depends upon the metabolic attributes, genetically engineered or otherwise, of the cells. The metabolic diversity of micro-organisms has been applied to processes such as antibiotic production, food processing, brewing and chemical production, and of course extraction of metals from ores. Metabolic diversity is, to a certain extent, based on nutrition, which, in its simplest form, can be divided into energy source, carbon requirements and nature of the electron donor producing reducing power to the cells. The source of energy may be light, in which case the organisms are phototrophic (eg green plants, algae). The carbon requirements and reducing power may come from organic sources. These organisms are then called heterotrophic (eg man and most bacteria, including the well known Escherichia colt). However, there is a group of bacteria whose energy metabolism depends upon chemical redox reactions, use inorganic carbon (CO2) and obtain their reducing power from reduced chemicals such as metal sulphides. These are known as chemolithotrophs. They play an important role in mineral recycling in nature and are also ideal for extraction of metals from ores. This is because they are extremeophiles being acidophilic (grow at very low pH) and sometimes also thermophilic (grow at very high temperatures). These bacteria operate in such hostile environments that competition, or contamination, by other organisms does not occur. Extraction of metals from ores by chemolithotrophic bacteria is commonly referred to as biohydrometallurgy. Other related areas are bioadsorption of metals from dilute solution,- microbial treatment of metal contaminated wastes and removal of toxic chemicals produced or used during mineral processing. This paper basically reviews the work that Gencor has undertaken in the field of biohydrometallurgy and the advancements it has made in commercialising the technology, but also touches on certain long-term areas of research that are currently under investigation.

Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, 2. the lack of awareness about their proper use, and 3. the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

This paper discusses the implementation of a mixed integer linear programming model for a coal preparation plant. The plant considered consists of primary and secondary heavy media cyclones, hydrocyclones for intermediate fines and froth flotation for the very fine material. The model is designed to optimise the plant settings and product flows to maximise revenues for a given specification for two product outputs. The model can deal with bonus/penalty aspects of the product pricing for products that exceed or fail to meet specification. We report on a model with two separate coal feeds with parallel circuits for the oversize, intermediate and fines streams. The genesis of this model is more than 30 years old but recent improvements in mixed integer programming solvers make a full mixed integer formulation practical. The original model began as an enumeration of cut points with arbitrary rules for product allocation. The product allocation was improved in a linear programming formulation by Gunn (1982) and Sarker (1991 and 1995). Current mixed integer programming capabilities make it possible to replace the enumeration aspects and solve directly as a mixed integer programming problem. Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. A custom-made set-up that measures bubble coalescence time and the thin film balance (TFB) technique were used to explore the role of residual xanthate (potassium amyl xanthate, PAX) and salt (NaCl) on the adsorption of two frothers (methyl isobutyl carbinol-MIBC, and di-propylene glycolDPG) at the air-water interface. This paper is primarily focused on the comparison of these two techniques in studying the interaction between the flotation reagents and salt emphasizing their capabilities and limits. The results from the coalescence rig showed that the presence of PAX improved the stability of bubbles in both frother solutions and led to a bubble coalescence inhibition at 50–500 ppm DPG. These measures were compared with the results from the TFB. Findings from the TFB were overall in good agreement with the bubble coalescence time, but a higher stability level was observed in thin films under the same condition. The effect of salt on the frother and PAX mixture was also explored, and the results showed an adverse impact of the salt on the interaction of frother and PAX with both techniques. However, variations were found between them in some cases. The TFB is much more sensitive to the presence of dissolved gas and oil droplets.

Central Norseman Gold Corporation was established in 1935 and has been mining on the Norseman field in Western Australia since then. It is Australia’s longest continuously operating gold mining operation at nearly 80 years, although it has had its periodic challenges in the intervening years.Over the last 40 years, a series of open pit mines around the Dundas Goldfield have supplied lower cost mill feed to the Phoenix Mill at Norseman from time to time but this has largely come to an end for the foreseeable future. Now that underground ore sources are once again the principal mill feed, there are several challenges to be met for an ongoing profitable operation.During the last 20 years, there have been three different owners and this has affected the manner in which the operations were managed quite significantly. These differing approaches are contrasted and examined in some detail from both the operational and financial aspects.Planning of a downsized operation to ensure sustainable profitability in the future in a mining environment where there has rarely been more than two to four years of reserves ahead of the mill for planning purposes has been a significant challenge. Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. "This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. It also discusses the challenges faced by technical specialists in communicating the results of technical and valuation studies to the investment community.As investors seek to take advantage of the current stage in the investment cycle, the key challenge of the technical specialist is to effectively communicate the uncertainty in technical assumptions, risks and opportunities that drive project value.CITATION:Fairfield, P J, 2016. The character of alluvial gold deposits presents severe difficulties, and sometimes limitations, on the extent to which metallurgical efficiency can be measured. Very little monitoring of metallurgical performance is practised. An indication of performance is often extracted from the comparison of production to the estimate. This is a dubious practice. The recovery efficiency of conventional practices, viz sluices, tables and jigs, falls off sharply below 0.2 mm. Field evaluation procedures tend to simulate these conventional practices. Thus the presence of fine gold may not be detected, particularly if obscured by clay. There is increasing evidence that fine gold could, in places, be present in sufficient concentrations to be economic. Most gold in paleoplacers is finer than 0.1 mm. There are established practices elsewhere in the mineral industry that may physically recover gold down to 5 microns in size and which could find application for fine alluvial gold.

The requirement for rapid vertical development for underground ventilation is often a factor when dealing with dynamic mine plans, with short vertical developments being used to optimise ventilation systems. In an effort to increase the safety and efficiency of the constructions, a simple and effective sinking methodology is required that is both adaptable and repeatable. A modified shaft construction methodology is proposed that attempts to minimise risk to the personnel as well as be cost-effective. Readily available equipment is used to ensure adaptability to the various environments and shaft parameters.One of the greatest risks of shaft sinking is having personnel working suspended over open cavities or underneath suspended loads. Removing this risk, by ensuring all construction is done from solid ground, allows for safer sinking operations. As the process is repeatable, familiarity and confidence in its construction sequence will increase with each successive sink.A trial sink is performed with a 3.6 m diameter, 20 m deep shaft. The shaft was excavated using a conventional strip-and-line philosophy, with the shaft then being lined from the collar via the use of large diameter corrugated steel culverts. The annulus between the steel culverts and shaft excavation is then filled with a concrete mixture to secure it in position.The new process was successful, with no personnel at any time during the process being suspended above an open excavation. The installation had relatively low capital and operational costs and was completed faster than an equivalent, conventional concrete-lined shaft construction. Therefore when compared to conventional shaft-sinking methods, this process can be considered safer, more efficient and relatively cost-effective.Further research is required to determine whether this method can be expanded to larger vertical developments.CITATION:Markoski, R and Grealish, P, 2014. Pit lakes may form when open cut mining leaves a pit void that then fills with ground and surface waters. This often replaces terrestrial ecosystems that existed prior to mining with an aquatic ecosystem, affording an opportunity to improve regional aquatic biodiversity values through targeted aquatic restoration (McCullough and van Etten, 2011). Restoration theory provides guidance when restoring disturbed systems towards landscapes that are of regional value and relevance. But how do we identify a restoration target for a novel aquatic habitat that only exists in the new post-mining landscape? This paper presents a process of first identifying and then surveying local representative aquatic systems, to provide a direction for pit lake restoration efforts and achievement criteria for pit lake relinquishment, using a case study from a sand mining operation amongst wetlands in south-western Australia.The company mines silica sands following mechanical removal of topsoil and then extraction of the ore from below the watertable by dredging. Assessment of wetland and riparian vegetation was achieved through the establishment and measurement of temporary monitoring transects across five natural wetlands in the Kemerton area. Several more regional wetlands were also visited and observations made to supplement and validate these data.Distinct vegetation zonation was found across each wetland, although typically wetland basins were unvegetated or filled with younger woody plants with patchy distributions. Fringing riparian vegetation consisted of few species (commonly the paperbark Melaleuca rhaphiophylla and the sedge Lepidosperma longitudinale), but community composition and structure were variable between wetlands. The pattern of vegetation seen across natural wetlands was best explained by topography and soil chemistry, with low lying wetland areas more likely to experience regular flooding and accumulate organic matter and nutrients.In conclusion, where they are available, regional natural waterbodies may constitute the best valid restoration goal. Nevertheless, the goal may need to consist of a range of closure design opportunities, rather than a single target.

Optimisation of a real-time at-line monitoring system for control of industrial granule coating quality is presented. The system is based on a fluorescence imaging system, because fluorescence originates in the interiors of enzyme granules but is significantly quenched by a polymer coating (which is needed due to environmental precautions). We have developed an image analytical system for direct prediction of coating quality, which is based on application of the Angle Measure Technique (AMT) for image complexity characterisation; AMT is briefly described. The first part of the presentation addresses pixel sampling strategies within a digital industrial image, inherent in application of AMT, in which the unfolded image is regarded as a one-dimensional object in analogy with 1D process sampling in Theory of Sampling (TOS). The effects of random, stratified and systematic pixel selections in the unfolded image are evaluated. Also factors such as the fraction of image pixels and the effects of specific unfolding strategies (there are three principal strategies, termed æchopÆ, æsnakeÆ and æspiralÆ respectively) are investigated. It turns out that unsuspected artifacts are sometimes produced, related to the specifics of the unfolding procedure, which interferes with a straightforward 1D TOS process sampling analogy. These artifacts have a wider interest û among others, for 2D sampling û and therefore receive special attention in this presentation. The optimal pixel selection strategy for the AMT algorithm is found to be systematic or stratified sampling (not surprising according to TOS) of 500+ initiating points, but need to be unfolded in the novel spiral- or snake-wise fashions in order to effectively counteract these artifacts. This also has a general impact on various suggested standard schemes for 2D grid-sampling, among others, from the geoscience realms. The second part of the presentation is directed towards optimal image analytical sampling of a continuous series of fluorescent images (imaging of conveyor belts of æinfinite lengthÆ), ie optimisation of process image sampling. The minimum number of images needed to uphold a sufficiently good on-line estimate of the quality control (QC) parameter in question is found to correspond to the relatively high sampling rate of 15 - 20 per cent, which can be shown to be related to an intrinsic very high measurement error level (25 per cent) of a mandated analytical reference method.

"Recognising that the mining industry is wedded to the break-even cut-off grade rather than a cut-off grade that optimises value, the author examines some perils and pitfalls in the use of break-even grades that lead to what the author calls ‘negatively geared ore reserves’.Negatively geared ore reserves occur when a portion of the ore reserves actually has a negative value and is effectively being subsidised by the more profitable portion of the ore reserves. This situation is generally difficult to detect with the level of information available to the public investor. The ore reserves can still be quite profitable in total, but now possess a level of risk that may not be appreciated.The risk profile (financial risk) of a negatively geared ore reserve is far greater than for a non-negatively geared ore reserve. Like a negatively geared investment property in a falling property market (for readers familiar with the Australian tax minimisation investment strategy), when the price of a commodity falls, a company that possesses a negatively geared ore reserve loses value at a magnified rate relative to a company that has a neutral or positively geared ore reserve. In the extreme case of a major commodity price reduction, as happened with the gold price in mid-2013, the negatively geared ore reserve can easily become negative value in total, not just in part.The negatively geared ore reserve is sometimes intentional – for instance in order to increase published ore reserve tonnages and meet the CEO’s key performance indicators – but is also often unintentional, resulting from various errors in the break-even calculation. Common errors in calculating a break-even grade include using fixed metallurgical recoveries, not including allowances for ideal laboratory versus real plant results, ignoring available operational data and using modal rather than mean parameter values in cost and performance calculations.This paper examines a common value distribution profile in many ore reserves and the effect of common break-even grade errors on this profile.CITATION:Poniewierski, J, 2016.
