Tailings dam construction and operation of Rosario Dominicana's gold/silver mine in the Dominican Republic is described. Impoundment of 8.5 kt/d of cyanide-process tailings is required in an intensive agricultural area which is also an earthquake and high rainfall zone. The earthfill embankment dam, incorporating internal gravel drains, is described together with methods of construction used. Methods of tailings transport, solution reclaim, and runoff water diversion that have evolved are discussed.

RECENT announcement of further restrictions on gasoline consumption in the Mid-West and Southwest has focused public attention on current discussions of an oil scarcity. Conflicting arguments are advanced on the one hand that we have plenty of oil and will not need to restrict consumption as soon as transportation facilities are adequate, and on the other hand that a great impending shortage will require most drastic reductions in civilian consumption in order to provide adequate supplies for military purposes. Data can be presented to support both views, the result being that the public is confused and uncertain of where the truth lies. For a nation with about half of the known crude-oil reserves of the world and two thirds of the total production it seems almost incredible to the layman that any shortage can exist. Those familiar with estimates of future demand. however. show increasing concern regarding our ability to meet military demands without further restrictions in civilian use or wasteful production from our remaining reserves. Only by considering such facts as are available and can be made public can a true appraisal be made of whether or not we are faced with a shortage that will amount to a crisis in crude oil.

Earlier studies of the mechanism of flotation showed that coal flotation products are contaminated by composite coal and mineral particles. The mineral matter of these particles has the dual effect of increasing the specific gravity and decreasing the coal surface of the particle available for bubble attachment. The present study showed that these particles are more loosely held in the froth column than the high grade coal particles, especially in the coarser sizes. Consequently, it is possible in the laboratory to produce a secondary concentration of the product by sprinkling the froth product with water to wash these loosely held particles from the froth during formation and recovery. To improve coal flotation, Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s research department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies1 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the basis for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14 mesh x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level. These principles and findings, together with work by Professor V. I. Klassen,' led to the froth sprinkling investigation reported in this paper. Working with Russian coals, Klassen had shown that froth sprinkling washes loosely held refuse particles from the froth and compensates for the water lost in the upper froth layers and increases its stability. As a result, the coal particles are retained in the froth and the loss of coarse coal from the froth is prevented. Decreases in ash of 0.1% to 1.5% were reported by Klassen. Working with a 28 mesh x 0 American coal, the author of the present paper found that single-stage flotation coupled with froth sprinkling produced a product comparable to that obtained by the more expensive method of roughing and cleaning.3 The investigation reported in the present paper expanded study of the effect of froth sprinkling to include each of the standard size fractions of a bituminous coal. The main findings are as follows: (1) For those size fractions between 48 mesh and 150 mesh, froth sprinkling produces a marked reduction in both sulfur and ash. In the case of those sizes coarser than 48 mesh, while this reduction is not as significant, the additional benefit of shorter retention time is still a plus for froth sprinkling. Furthermore, when froth sprinkling is coupled with normal fast flotation, the product purity approaches that obtained by starvation reagent feeding, i.e., gradual feeding of flotation reagent to float the recoverable coal from the pulp slowly in several increments. Data of several studies on the equilibrium between molten iron and open hearth-type slags have been combined to determine some of the chemical reactions involved in steel-making. Effects of slag composition and temperature on the iron oxide activity, distribution of sulfur between slag and metal, and the carbon content of the metal are discussed. Also, an overall reaction for the equilibrium between sulfur and oxygen is presented. DURING the past 15 years, a number of significant equilibrium studies have been carried out between liquid iron and simple basic and acid slags in an effort to throw light on the chemical reactions involved in steelmaking. This paper is a summary of the experimental reports on investigations which have been conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and of related work in other laboratories. The investigations summarized in this paper include the works of Fetters and Chipman1 and Taylor and Chipman,' which dealt with simple slags that are similar to those found in the open hearth. The sulfur determinations of the slag-metal tests of Fetters and Chipman as reported by Grant and Chip-man" are included. Also, the investigations by Win-kler and Chipman' and Grant and ChipmanQ f more complex slag systems are included in this summary. The experimental procedure is described in detail in each of these papers and will not be discussed. Since the previous reports have been somewhat independent, it is desirable to review and combine the data of the various investigations to determine, as accurately as possible, the reactions in the slag-metal systems of the open hearth. It is the object of this report to present the combined data in such a way as to enhance their utility and applicability. Oxidizing Power of Slags of the System (CaO+MgO)-Si0,-FeO in Equilibrium with Carbon-Free lron The slags selected to determine the iron oxide activity in equilibrium with pure liquid iron were those containing less than 2 pct each of P,O,, MnO, or A1,0, on a weight percentage basis. The method used to calculate activities of iron oxide in liquid slags was that developed by Taylor and Chipman.' The solubility of oxygen in molten carbon-free iron under pure iron oxide slags can be expressed by the following eauation —6320 log (pctO)-------------— + 2.734 [1] where T is the absolute temperature. The oxygen solubility values as determined from Eq. 1 were used throughout this study to calculate the iron oxide activity. The iron oxide activities of slags of various iron oxide contents are plotted in Fig. 1 as a function of the basicity, which is defined as the ratio (pct CaO + pct MgO)/pct SiO,, and are based on molecular percentage values of the components. The percent (FeO), is the total iron content in the slag calculated to FeO. Fig. 1 shows that as the basicity increases at constant mol pct (FeO),, the iron oxide activity increases rapidly and reaches a plateau which extends on the basicity scale from about 1.3 to 2.3; the iron oxide activity then decreases rapidly until a basicity of about 3.0 is reached, where it tends to level off. The solid portions of the curves represent the experimental data of Fetters and Chipman and Win-kler and Chipman. Their experimental heats were made in magnesia crucibles, and hence the slags were saturated with magnesia. The broken lines on the left represent the experimental data of Taylor and Chipman, who used a rotating crucible. In general, these slags contained less than 3 pct MgO. The absence of data for slags containing less than about 40 mol pct (FeO), and basicity ratios greater than about 2.5 made it necessary to calculate curves using ionic concepts of slags. The broken lines on the right, which disregard the solubility limits of di and tricalcium silicate and lime, were obtained by following the treatment of Flood and Grjotheim,"

A study of the effect of small amounts of interstitial impurities on recovery and re crystallization in high-purity iron (99.995 pct) has been undertaken. This paper gives results on the effect of carbon, introduced in small-dosed amounts @om 0.0005 to 0.0086 wt pct) by heating iron specimens of high purity m a static atmosphere of CO + ,. The materials prepared in this way, cold-worked 80 pct and subjected to a series of isochronal and isothermal annealings, were submitted to examinations by X-rays, micrographs, and hardness tests. It was observed that effect of carbon is remarkable in the sense of blocking recovery of mechanical properties up to the temperature at which re crystallization begins. On the contrary, carbon has a negligible effect on primary re crystallization temperature, when compared with the known effect of substitutional impurities. This is in agreement with the high mobility of interstitials. In effect, only a slight decrease, -20 pct, of the grain-boundary motion rate was noted, due to the interaction between the grain boundary and the carbon atoms. On the other hand, in the samples in which the carbon content is above the solubility limit at the temperature at which re crystallization occurs, a slight increase of nucleation frequency is noted due to the presence of precipitated carbides. ThE effect of purity on recovery and recrystalli-zation phenomena has been known for a long time; however, recently, new attention has been given to the problem since new methods for obtaining metals with extremely low impurity contents have become available. Most of this research work essentially concerns the effects of impurities which cause precipitates or give rise to substitutional solid solutions. The works of Bolling and winegard1 and Aust and utter' on lead, and Vandermeer and orddon' on aluminum, 01sen4 on nickel, and Abrahamson and Blakeney on iron should in particular be referred to. On the effect of this type of impurities a quantitative theory has been formulated by Detert and Lucke6 and has lately been discussed critically by Cahn7 and Gordon and vandermeer.' Interstitial solid solutions in iron have not as yet been studied. As the study of the effect of interstitials is of great interest both from a theoretical and practical standpoint, it was deemed useful to examine the effects of carbon, nitrogen, and boron on recovery and primary recrystallization of iron. There already is some work by Chaudron et al.,1-" on the effect of interstitials on iron; their work, however, mainly concerns secondary recrystallization. The present paper refers in particular to the effect of carbon. EXPERIMENTAL PART Preparation of Materials. The pure iron used for this research was obtained from FeCIS recrystal-lized and purified by extraction with isopropylic ether. From the ferric chloride purified in this manner, hydroxide was precipitated with a solution of very pure ammonia, and, by calcination in pure sintered alumina crucibles, oxide was obtained. Reduction of the oxide to iron sponge was performed in sintered alumina tubes with very pure hydrogen at 650°C; at the end of the operation temperature was increased to 900°C. Specimens for the experiments were obtained by sintering the sponge at 1480°C in pure Hz after a pre sinter ing treatment at 900° C. It is important to note that the treatment at 1480°C in Ha produces a further purification from more volatile elements such as zinc, cadmium, arsenic, lead, and tin. Details on the preparation and characteristics of this type of very pure iron are given in a previous work.'' Only the complete analysis performed by neutron-activation methodsz3 is given here, Table I. Some of the specimens prepared in this way were carburized in the 0 region with very low amounts of carbon by treating them at 700°C in a static atmosphere of Ha containing a definite amount of CO. In many metallurgical processes and in many laboratory investigations silicon monoxide undoubtedly plays an important role. It is unfortunate therefore that wide differences exist between the results obtained by different investigators1-7 in their studies of such equilibria as In an attempt to put our knowledge of SiO on a surer basis, an exhaustive study has been made of equilibria [I] and [2] at temperatures ranging from 1300" to 1600°C. Reaction [I] was studied by measuring the amounts of silica which could be condensed from streams of Hz or Hz + HzO which had previously been brought into equilibrium with silica at temperatures ranging from 1425" to 1600°C. Reaction [2] was studied by measuring the material that could be condensed from streams of Hz or argon which had been brought into equilibrium with mixtures of silicon and silica at temperatures ranging from 1310" to 1485°C. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The silicon was "superpure" grade and contained less than 0.1 pct impurities. The silica was prepared from pure mineral quartz; this was crushed and treated with concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove particles of iron, washed with water, and finally dried at 120°C. For the hydrogen + silica reaction, the silica was sized to —20+100 mesh. For the silicon + silica reaction, the two materials were ground to a fine powder in an agate mortar. The hydrogen and argon were commercial oxygen-free gases. The gas streams were controlled with capillary flow meters and the volumes were measured by wet gas meters. After passing through the meters, the gases were partially dried by silica gel. The hydrogen for the HZ + SiOz reaction was then passed through palladised asbestos at 300°C and dried with magnesium perchlorate. The efficiency of oxygen removal was checked throughout the experiments by passing the gas over an electrically heated strip of nichrome, used as an indicator as described by Rathman and de itt.' When mixtures of HZ + Hz0 were required, the partial pressures of water vapor (1.8 to 22 mm) were obtained by passing the hydrogen through oxalic acid dihydrateg' lo held at various controlled temperatures, O.l°C, by means of a water bath. The hydrogen for the Si + Si02 reaction was purified by passing it over a mixture of 3 parts of magnesium to 5 of lime heated to 600°."l1 u The argon for this reaction was passed through titanium powder (-3/16 in. + 100 mesh) heated to 900°C. The nitrogen used to prevent the reaction products escaping from the condenser (see later), was deoxidized by copper or iron at 600°C. All these gases were finally dried with magnesium perchlorate. Furnace, Temperature Contr01, and Measurement A molybdenum resistance furnace was used for both sets of experiments. The reactions were conducted inside a high-grade alumina tube, 36 in. long and 1 in. in diam as indicated in Fig. 1. With this arrangement an even temperature zone (2"C) 4 cm long was satisfactorily obtained. The temperatures were kept constant by means of a proportional controller actuated by a Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple. This was placed between the two alumina tubes, so that the temperature at the junction was 1400" to 1450°C. Up to 1485"C, the temperatures were measured with Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouples. For higher temperatures an optical pyrometer was used, this being sighted (through the glass window 1 in Fig. 1) on the end of the alumina tube, that held the SiOz or Si +SiOz mixture, 10 in Fig. 1. The optical pyrometer was recalibrated whenever a change was made in any part of the apparatus situated in the hot zone. Successive readings with the optical pyrometer were reproducible to within 1"C. Equilibrium Apparatus and Procedure. Hydvogen and Silica Reaction. The apparatus is shown in Fig.

Calorimetric measurements have been made of the heats of solution of gold axd indium in a number of liquid tin-rich alloys at a temperature of 705°K. Relative partial molar enthalpies of gold were determined as a function of dilute solute concentrations in the binary Au-Sn system and in the ternary Ag-Au-Sn and Au-In-Sn systems. Relative partial molar enthalpies of indium were determined for dilute solute concentrations in the In-Sn, Ag-In-Sn, and Au-In-Sn systems. Through application of the interaction coefficient concept introduced by Wagner and more recently extended by Lupis and Elliott, ualues have been obtained for the Au-Au, Ag-Au, Au-In, and Ag-In enthalpy interaction coefficients in liquid tin. The results are inte@reted in terms of solute atom distributions through comparisons with the predictions of dilute solution models. INTEREST in the thermodynamic behavior of dilute liquid alloys stems from two primary sources. From a practical viewpoint, it is often of importance to know or to be able to predict the effect that one solute will have on the thermodynamic properties of the other solutes in a multicomponent system. Studies of dilute solutions may also be rewarding from the theoretical point of view. Some of the difficulties arising from the more complex interactions possible in concentrated solutions are avoided, leading to easier interpretations in terms of solutibn models and bonding energies. For example, in a binary alloy the limiting values of the partial molar properties of the solute represent the case for which each solute atom is completely surrounded by atoms of the solvent, and no other interactions are possible. Solute - solute interactions in dilute solutions are conveniently treated by the interaction coefficient concept of ~agner.' Using a Taylor series expansion for the logarithm of the activity coefficient, In yi, of a component, i, in a solution consisting of dilute solutes with atomic fractions xi, xj, xk, and so forth, in a solvent, s, and neglecting the second- and higher-order terms, Wagner obtained the expression: Where Wheyz is the limiting value of yi in the pure solvent, s. From the Maxwell-type relationships between partial molar quantities, it may be shown1'2 that e{ = ej, r}\ =tj), and ai - crj. Experimental determination of the interaction coefficients requires extremely precise measurements of the appropriate properties as functions of solute concentrations in very dilute regions. Few such data exist for intermetallic alloys, even for binary systems, because of experimental difficulties. This is especially true with respect to enthalpy data for dilute alloys. Examination of the compilation of data for binary alloys by Hultgren, Orr, Anderson, and ~elle~~ reveals that determination of limiting values of &fii(Xi =0) often requires extrapolations to infinite dilution from xi = 0.05 to 0.10. Direct measurements of the enthalpy interaction coefficient, qi, for multicomponent systems are virtually nonexistent. This quantity is of course subject to direct calorimetric measurement, but its determination must be limited to cases where high experimental precision is possible. The heats of solution of gold and indium in liquid tin can be measured with relatively high precision, which makes determinations of 73 involving these metals as the measured solutes experimentally attractive. This paper presents the results of such determinations of the Au-Au, Ag-Au, Au-In, and Ag-In enthalpy interaction coefficients in liquid tin. GEOCHEMICAL investigation of trace elements in surface materials was begun near Ely, Minn., in 1953 along the basal contact of Duluth gabbro with Giants Range granite (Fig. 1). This article presents data on the distribution of copper and nickel in till and in stream sediments in the area and proposes an explanation for the types of distribution found. The Duluth gabbro, one of the world's largest basic intrusives, intrudes rocks which range in age from Keewatin to middle Keweenawan. Within the test area the gabbro is in contact with granite except for short sections where it is in contact with remnants of iron formation. Sulfide mineralization occurs within the gabbro, near and parallel to the basal contact for a distance of several miles. Schwartz and Davidson' have described the geologic setting of the mineralization. The sulfides, believed to be syngenetic, include chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of bornite. They occur disseminated in the silicates and as small interstitial masses. The ratio of copper to nickel is about 3.8:1, based on 66 chemical analyses of rock samples from various outcrops (Ref. 1, p. 702, and Ref. 2). Test Procedures: With specified exceptions, all nickel and copper tests were made by the chromo-graph method,:' which measures the intensity of a colored spot formed by a reaction between the metal being determined and special reagent paper. The intensity is then compared to the intensity of spots prepared from samples of known metal content. Details of the test procedure are outlined in another article (Ref. 4, pp. 77,78). All soil samples tested in this investigation to date have been weighed on an analytical balance. However, a volumetric scoop designed to provide about 0.1 g of soil adds to the speed and ease of testing and has been found to give satisfactory results (Ref. 5, p. 531, and Ref. 19). The size of the samples used for the tests was 0.1 g. Whenever such small samples are used there is some question as to whether they are representative of the several grams in the field sample. Many repeat tests of the samples used in this investigation demonstrated that results can be reproduced within the limits of accuracy of the method without formal mixing beyond that inherent in screening the soil fractions. Furthermore, the 0.1 g is probably as representative of the field sample as the field sample is of its area of influence. Hawkes and Lakin (Ref. 6, p. 291), who considered the general problem, compared ground and quartered bulk samples of 500 g with 5-g grab samples. They concluded that "there is no significant loss in accuracy of data by substituting grab samples for bulk samples." The term soil implies somewhat different things to the geologist, engineer, and soil scientist.' For convenience the term as used in this article refers to unconsolidated material (the mantle) overlying bed rock. Sampling Procedure: Samples were taken at 100-ft intervals along north-south traverse lines across the gabbro-granite contact. The soil (till) samples were taken at an average depth of 1 ft, which was below the high-humus surface layer and into clean till. Samples taken at 1-ft intervals down to ledge showed as high a metal content at 1 ft below the air-surface as at greater depths and in two instances were slightly higher. The till at 1-ft depth did not appear to differ from material at greater depths. Total depth to bedrock has been tested at only a few points and where measured varied from 1 to 10 ft. Aerial Distribution Contours and Profiles: Plotting of copper, nickel, and cobalt content in contour form (Fig. 2) shows that anomalous amounts of these metal ions occur in till over and closely adjacent to mineralized areas of the gabbro. Contouring nickel content alone, or the copper content, outlines the same target area. Contours of the copper content provide a more distinct anomaly than nickel because of the higher copper concentration. The traverses are rather widely spread for interpolation; however, drilling has confirmed the target area essentially as shown.

A GREAT deal of work has been done on the rolling of single crystals of iron. Barrett and evensoon studied end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals and found that some crystals maintained a sharp single orientation during rolling. Others rotated into two or more orientations, and some fragmented and approached the entire polycrystalline texture depending on the original orientation of both the normal and rolling directions. Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl2 studied iron-silicon alloys and found that the addition of silicon to the iron had little effect on heavily rolled polycrystalline material. Dunn3 has extensively studied the cold-rolling and recrystallization of silicon-iron single crystals. Dunn found that for single crystals having initial orientation between (110) [001] and (111) [112], the principalcomponent of the cold-rolled texture is (111) [112]. Koh and Dunn4 studied the cold-rolled textures of single crystals having initial orientations in the range (001) [110] to (111) [IT01 and found that these are stable end orientations. They also found that all orientations having a [110] direction parallel to the transverse direction rotate to either the (001) [110] or the (111) [112] stable end orientation except for orientations near (112) [11], which divide and produce a final texture consisting of (001) [110]and (111) [112] components. Crystals having a (111) <112>-type texture re-crystallized to a (120) [001] or (110) [001]-type texture. Crystals having orientations with a range of (001) to (335) in the rolling plane and [110] in the rolling direction recrystallized5 to a wide spread of the initial orientations resulting from a multiplicity of 30-deg rotations about several (110) poles. The present study was undertaken to relate other orientations of crystals of silicon-iron to their cold-rolling and recrystallization textures, so that one might rationalize polycrystalline recrystallization data on the basis of the known deformation texture and the behavior of single crystals in these orientations. PROCEDURE Samples were obtained from a cylindrical ingot of 3 pct silicon iron prepared as follows: Armco iron was melted with high-purity silicon flakes under an atmosphere of argon to minimize oxidation. The alloy was poured into a special mold to form an ingot which consisted partially of large columnar crystals. Plates were cut from the columnar portions of the ingot with the longitudinal direction parallel to the columnar axes and ground to 0.040 in. thick. The plates were heavily etched to a thickness of 0.032 in. to remove the cold-worked surface. Orientations of seventeen crystals were determined by Laue back-reflection techniques keeping the mean columnar axis as the reference direction. The plate was then cut in two, parallel to the columnar axis. One portion of the plate was rolled at room temperature parallel to the columnar axis to a reduction in thickness of 84 pct. The remaining portion of the plate was rolled also at room temperature across the columnar axis to a reduction of 66 pct, at which point the crystals began to separate at the boundaries. After rolling, nine individual crystals were removed from the strip by cutting along the crystal boundaries with a jeweler&apos;s saw. Fig. 1 shows the original orientations of the six crystals that were straight-rolled and of the three crystals (4, 7, and 8) that were cross-rolled. Each rolled crystal was carefully etched to approximately 0.002 in. thick. Textures of the cold-rolled crystals were determined by use of the diffractometer with a non-integrating sample holder. The pole figures were made for the (200) poles using molybdenum Ka radiation and were plotted by an automatic stereographic projection recorder.&apos; Spurious poles were determined by rerunning portions of the pole figures using strontium oxide to filter out the Ka radiation. The central portions of the pole figures have not been determined. The pole figures were completed to about 55 deg from the periphery at which point the sample holder interfered with passage of the beam. Following the determination of the cold-rolled

The solubility of oxygen in molten Fe-Cr alloys has been determined at 1550° , 1600°, and 1650°C for alloys containing up to alloyshasbeenabout 50 pct Cr and found to decrease as chromium increases to 6 pet and then to increase gradually. Phase relations in the Fe-Cr-0 system at steelmaking temperatures have been evaluated and two previously unreported oxides have been identified. OPERATIONS in the melting and refining of chromium steels are dependent to a major degree on the reactions of chromium and iron with oxygen and are primarily directed toward controlling and modifying these reactions to secure maximum advantage in the utilization of chromium. Although fairly effective practices have been developed empirically, understanding of the specific reactions is limited. Moreover, the ability of molten steel to dissolve oxygen that subsequently precipitates as oxide inclusions during solidification is well known, so that clarification of the effect of chromium on the nature and mechanism of formation of these inclusions is desirable. Study of the problem indicated that increased knowledge of the fundamental Fe-Cr-0 system is essential to further technical and economic improvement. Consequently, an investigation of the influence of chromium on the solubility of oxygen in molten iron and of phases and phase relations in the Fe-Cr-0 system was undertaken at the Metals Research Laboratories of the Electro Metallurgical Co. as part of a general program on the effective utilization of chromium in chromium steel production. Experimental Procedure All of the experimental runs made during this investigation were carried out in the rotating crucible induction furnace which has been described in detail in a previous publication.&apos; In review, the principle underlying this furnace is that rotational forces in the crucible cause the molten metal to assume a concave shape in such a manner that the slag is contained in the molten metal cup, thereby minimizing slag/crucible contact and subsequent reaction. Practically all of the heats were melted in commercial-quality magnesia crucibles of the type usually furnished for laboratory induction furnaces. All of the runs were made under an argon atmosphere after the furnace chamber had been degassed. Bath temperatures were controlled by Pt—Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples. The basic furnace charge consisted of a premelted 12 to 15 lb electrolytic iron slug which had been cast to a shape convenient for fitting into the rotating furnace crucible. A typical analysis of the electrolytic iron slugs is given in Table I. For certain runs, it was desirable to melt down charges containing high initial chromium contents. In these cases the chromium was added to the electrolytic iron during the premelting operations. Chromium was added to the rotating furnace bath in the form of electrolytic chromium of the analysis given in Table 11. In all of the constant temperature runs, the standard procedure was to melt down the electrolytic iron or alloy slug under vacuum, admit argon to slightly greater than atmospheric pressure, and adjust rotational speed to develop a well formed "cup" on the bath surface. The melt was then saturated with oxygen by an addition of ferric oxide and the temperature of the bath adjusted to within +5°C of the desired level. At this point the heat was permitted to come to equilibrium prior to sampling or further addition. This time interval was varied from 15 min to 2 hr but generally was about 20 min. After sampling, the desired chromium addition was made and the bath again equilibrated prior to subsequent sampling. This cycle of addition and sampling continued for the duration of the run which lasted from 4 to 8 hr. At the end of this period, power was shut off and the bath allowed to solidify in the furnace. Quenched metal samples were taken from the equilibrated melts by means of the "Taylor sampler" which has been described by Taylor and Chipman.&apos; Before being submitted to chemical analysis, all samples were carefully examined for surface slag occlusions and cold shuts. Later in the study, each sample was radiographed and examined metal-lographically in cross-section to determine the presence of internal defects. On the basis of these examinations, sound and apparently clean specimens were selected from the Taylor samples for chemical analysis.

Ultrasonic attenuation and stress were measured simultaneously as a function of strain for aluminum single crystals tested in compression. The propagation mode and polarization of the ultrasonic waves were chosen with reference to the theoretical analysis presented in Part I. Good experimental agreement was found with this theory and with earlier experimental work in tensile tests. Support is given to the contention that ultrasonic -attenuation measurements are much more sensitive to the early stages of plastic deformation than are conventional stress -strain measurements. Dislocation meclzanisms are suggested which are compatible with both the present and the earlier experimental observations. A brief historical introduction of previous work concerned with the study of dislocation motion by ultrasonic-attenuation measurements has been given in Part I. The purpose of the present experimental investigation was to make use of the theoretical considerations from Part I in order to gain further knowledge concerning dislocation motions during plastic deformation. Emphasis was placed on the choice of propagation modes and polarization of the waves, such that interactions between these waves and dislocation movement on a specific slip system could be investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Since the primary concern of this investigation was dislocation damping, other sources of damping were eliminated as much as possible. The test specimens were 0.5-in.-diam single crystals of 99.99+ pct pure aluminum grown from the melt by a modified Bridgman technique. Ultrasonic-attenuation measurements were made at a frequency of 10 megacycles per sec using a Style 56A001 Ultrasonic Attenuation Comparator manufactured by Sperry Products Inc. after a design by Chick, An- derson, and Truell.1 At this frequency the particle vibrations are essentially adiabatic and thermo-elastic damping should be absent. This frequency was selected since it was one of the frequencies used by Hikata et al.2 n conjunction with tensile tests on aluminum crystals, thus allowing direct comparison with this work. The use of quartz-crystal transducers insures that the amplitude of vibration is not sufficient to cause the break away of the dislocation loops from weak pinning points. The quartz-crystal transducers used all possessed a resonance frequency of 10 megacycles per sec and were thin circular discs 0.375 in. in diameter. X-cut crystals were used to generate the longitudinal waves and AC-cut crystals to generate the transverse waves. Aluminum was chosen as the basic material because it is a typical fcc metal whose deformation behavior is well-known and because the most recent work at the time the present research was initiated was that by Hikata et al. who used aluminum. The present tests were run in compression to see if such tests could be satisfactorily run in compression without being severely masked by grip effects.. A second reason was to compare the results in compression with those of the tension experiments of Hikata et at. Finally, shorter specimens could be run in compression with less over-all damping than in tension. All of the aluminum-crystal test specimens used were oriented for plastic deformation by single slip; i.e., they possessed the orientation having a maximum Schmid factor of 0.5. Because of the well-known time dependence 3 of plastic strain at constant stress, the test specimens were subjected to a quasi-static loading. Previous investigations4-&apos; have indicated that attenuation after plastic deformation is also time-dependent, so any continuous loading of the specimen would show that changes in attenuation were also a function of strain rate. By loading the specimen to a given stress level and holding it constant until the recovery process was essentially complete, the time dependence was eliminated. The quartz transducer was permanently bonded to the aluminum crystal using Eastman 910 cement. Excess cement was removed from around the quartz with DMF (dimethyl formamide). Eastman 910 was found to be far superior for bonding, especially with regard to the shear-wave transducer, since it formed a solid bond which readily supports shear-wave propagation. The attenuation and phase shift which formations produce in the electromagnetic field of an induction-type electrical well-logging instrument are great enough to substantially affect the response of the tool to formation conductivity under normal logging conditions. The application of the general equations for the propagation of an electromagnetic field in a conductive medium to the transmitter-receiver coil pair of an induction-logging-tool coil system gives an expression for the response which properly takes the propagation effects into account. A comparison of a calculation of this type with the response computed from the commonly used geometric factor concept, which does not include the propagation effect, leads to a factor Go representing the ratio of the responses computed by the two methods. The value of Go decreases not only with increasing formation conductivity, but also with increasing transmitter-to-detector coil spacing. For a single coil pair with a 40-in. spacing, the value of Go is 0.972 in a 20-millimho/m formation. The value is reduced to 0.915 and 0.812 for conductivities of 200 and 1,000 millimhos/m. As a result, the basic signal generated by the induction-logging coil system is not linearly related to formation conductivity as expected from the geometric factor concept. A uniform conductivity scale can be obtained only by adding a suitable nonlinear element to the recording system. The addition of auxiliary coils, having spacings less than the main-coil span, to achieve focusing results in an even greater departure of the basic signal from linearity with conductivity. The solution of the field equations near the interface between two formations of different conductivity gives the curve shape on an induction logging tool in crossing the interface. The addition of auxiliary coils to achieve focusing can add anomalous character to the curve shape in crossing the interface, which might be mistaken for lithological detail. Preliminary calculations which include the propagation effects in the determination of the conductivity correction for thin beds lead to correction factors which are substantially smaller than those obtained from geometric factor considerations. It is apparent that thin-bed corrections derived from geometric factor calculations are of doubtful validity. INTRODUCTION Although the electromagnetic induction type of electrical well log has been used for a number of years and has gained general acceptance in quantitative well-log interpretation, no technically complete investigation of the mechanism and of its operation has been published. The studies which have been presented are based upon the premise that neither the shape nor the intensity of the induction field of the logging tool is in any way affected by the electrical characteristics of the formation. From the inception of induction logging it has been recognized that under some formation conditions the performance of the instrument could be expected to be substantially different from that predicted by the simplified analysis. This anomalous performance has been called "skin effect" since it is the result of the same phenomenon which causes high-frequency alternating currents to flow only near the surface of metallic conductors. In the range of conductivities encountered in the sediments, the formation actually does not exhibit the sharply defined conducting "skin" shown by metals. The gradual modification of the distribution of the currents in the formation, produced by the induction field of the logging tool, is the direct result of phenomena associated with the propagation of the electromagnetic field through the formation. Therefore, it can be much more appropriately described as the "propagation effect". One purpose of this paper is to review the results of a solution of the equations for the performance of a single transmitter-receiver coil pair induction-logging system which takes into account the propagation effect, showing the manner in which the tool performance established by this analysis differs from that derived from the less comprehensive analyses currently in use. Many engineering functions such as surface metering work and laboratory compressibility check points involve the use of liquid densities of light hydrocarbon mixtures at various pressures and temperatures. However, at the present time, no simple reliable method exists for determining density variation, particularly if the composition of the liquid is unknown. Consequently, a study was undertaken to develop and present a simple and accurate method of predicting density variation of a light hydrocarbon liquid with pressure and temperature, knowing only the density of the liquid at some condition. The experimental liquid compressibility data from API Project 37 by Sage and Lacey&apos; have been considered to be accurate within 0.5 per cent and cover a wide range of pressure (14.7 to 10,000 psia), temperature (100" to 400°F) and molecular weight (up to 150). From these data, a set of liquid density curves, which relate density to pressure, temperature and molecular weight, was developed. These curves make it possible to predict density variation with pressure and temperature. Compared to extensive laboratory compressibility data on a complex, light hydrocarbon liquid, the use of the liquid density curves resulted in an average error of less than 0.5 per cent. Based on the results of this analysis, it is concluded that the set of liquid density curves developed from the data of Sage and Lacey provides an accurate and simple method for predicting the density variation of light hydrocarbon liquids when the density at some condition is known. These curves should be very helpful in many engineering calculations, particularly in the surface metering of light hydrocarbon liquids. INTRODUCTION Many situations arise in field and engineering laboratory work, such as reservoir engineering studies, check of experimentally determined laboratory data and orifice flow-meter formulas, where liquid density factors at various pressure-temperature conditions are required. Also, the need for accurate light hydrocarbon liquid information has become more important with the advent of miscible-type displacements for secondary recovery purposes in oilfield operations. Several reliable methods are available1 - "or determining the density of liquid hydrocarbons if the composition of the liquid is known. However, there is a definite lack of methods for accurately determining the variation of density when the composition of the liquid is unknown. The purpose of this study is to review the various methods for determining hydrocarbon liquid densities and to develop a simple and reliable method of determining variation in density of light hydrocarbon liquids with pressure and temperature when the compositio~n of the liquid is unknown. METHODS FOR DETERMINING DENSITY OF LIQUIDS OF KNOWN COMPOSITION Sage, Lacey and Hicks&apos; have proposed a method to predict the density of light liquid hydrocarbons by using partial molal volumes. Data are available on experimentally developed partial liquid volumes of hydrocarbons over a rather limited range of temperature, pressure and composition. The partial mold volume method has proved satisfactory for determining the density of some hydrocarbon liquids when the composition is known. Within the range covered in the Sage, Lacey and Hicks1 data, the results agree within about 3 per cent of the experimental values. Hanson mentions the limitation of this method to a composition range of approximately 10 per cent by weight of methane, which will not allow this correction to cover most low molecular weight-light hydrocarbon liquids. Standing and Katz2 studied data on light hydrocarbon-liquid systems containing methane and ethane at high temperature and pressure and have presented a method for determining liquid densities, assuming additive volumes for all components less volatile than ethane and using apparent densities for methane and ethane. The compressibility and thermal-expansion curves used by Standing are based on assumptions that compressibility of a hydrocarbon liquid at temperatures below 300°F is a function of the liquid density at 60°F and that thermal expansion of the liquid is affected little by pressure. The information required to use this technique with an example problem is furnished by Standing.&apos; Hanson eports an average error of - 0.5 per cent using the method of apparent densities in calculating liquid densities of several volatile hydrocarbon mixtures. However, as implied, the apparent density method is not applicable for liquid density calculations when the composition of the liquid is unknown. Watson- as presented a method

Evidence is presented that copper-base solid solutions of different solutes having equal grain sizes, no preferred crystal-lographic orientation, equal electron-atom ratios, and, within experimental scatter, identical initial yield strengths, need not have identical stress-strain curves at strains larger than about 0.04. The stress-strain behavior is rationalized in terms of the proposed Suzuki chemical interaction between solute atoms and extended dislocations using what is thought to be a somewhat different means of representing stress-strain data. ALTHOUGH the effect: of alloying element upon the strength characteristics of sold solutions is a subject which has received considerable attention in the past, the exact relationships between the common deformation parameters and certain common variables are not really known in some cases. As a result some of the experiments reported in the literature in which these variables are inadequately controlled lose some of their persuasion regarding underlying principles. Nonetheless, facts are known which bear pointing up: When the true stress, a, and true plastic strain, E, of tensile deformatic~n are plotted on a double logarithmic coordinate system, one may observe a straight-line relationship at strains greater than 0.02. The form of the curve in the linear region is given by a = Ken! where a represents true stress, E, true strain, and K and tn, constants. If the relationship holds, K and m define the flow characteristics of the material being tested. m and K, however, may vary with other parameters. Hollomon found that in a-brass, m is influenced by grain size. French and HibbardZ found in alloys of copper that inverse relationships existed between m and 1) the solute concentration for a given solute, 2) the 0.01 yield strength, and 3) the constantK. Lacy and Gensamer3 observed (du/d~) (= U/Em) to increase with increasing values of K in systems of alloyed ferrites (although with considerable scatter of data which may be attributed to uncontrolled grain size). Brick, Martin, and Angier* deduced in copper-base alloys a straight-line relationship (with some scatter) between the change in the Dph number due to solid-solution strengthening and the change in the Dph number due to work hardening which suggested that copper-base alloys having equal yield strengths might have identical stress-strain curves in the plastic flow regions. French and HibbardZ concluded that the yield strength of copper-base solid solutions is the proper basis for comparing the effects of solute elements. Also, Allen, Schofield, and ate&apos; showed that, within their experimental variation, copper-base alloys of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic having the same electron-atom ratios have the same true-stress true-plastic strain curves. Dorn, Pietrokowsky, and ~ietz&apos; also found that with aluminum-base alloys the stress-strain curves in the flow regions are approximately the same if "equivalent" concentrations of alloying elements are used. Solute valence and lattice parameter distortion were the parameters used to determine equivalency. The present report describes an investigation in which an attempt was made to obtain copper-base solid-solution alloys of four solute elements having within close tolerances equal grain sizes and yield strengths, and to see if the level of yield strength does indeed define the flow curve regardless of solute type. During analysis of the data certain unexpected features of the stress-strain curves became apparent which gave rise to some speculation and are discussed at length in the paragraphs that follow. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloy Preparation—Using the data of French and HibbardZ as a first approximation, four different binary copper-base alioys were designed so as to have the same yield strength. In addition, other alloys were prepared in which the solute aoncentrations varied slightly from those calculated above so as to span a range of yield strengths, see Table L The yield strengths of all alloys prepared except the copper-tin alloys were subsequently found to Lie fairly close to one another. The copper used in the alloys was produced by the American Smelting and Refining Co. and was of very high purity (99.999 pct). The alloy additions and their initial purities are as follows:

The conventional techniques1 for determining the liquidus and solidus surfaces of an alloy system containing more than two components are extremely tedious to use and do not provide a complete picture of the equilibrium relations between solid and liquid alloys. These techniques are unable to yield "tie-line" information concerning solid and liquid phase equilibrium, a very important parameter in the solidification description of the liquid alloy and a very necessary parameter in the preparation of "zone-levelled" alloy crystals. The tie-line in a polycomponent system is analogous to the partition coefficient, k, in a binary system, it gives the composition of the solid, Cs, in equilibrium with a liquid of composition CL. That is, CS = kCL, where CL = [CO, c1,...Cn] denotes the concentrations of the n + 1 constituents, and k = [ko, kb ,...kon] denotes the gross partition coefficient for the elements between the two phases; thus, k is the tie-line in this system. To provide complete information concerning the two-phase equilibrium in a polycomponent system it is necessary to know both the liquidus surface and the gross partition coefficient. From these two the solidus surface is obtainable. The conventional techniques are unable to provide this information in other than a binary system so we must look elsewhere. In recent years considerable insight has been gained into the correct description of the liquid-solid transformation, 2,3 and controlled solidification experiments may now be designed to both facilitate and enhance equilibrium diagram studies. In the present paper consideration is given to two methods for obtaining the liquidus surface and the tie-lines in polycomponent systems. The methods to be described below deal with the solidification of an n + 1 constituent liquid alloy of initial composition [co, Co ,...Con], where the superscripts refer to the elements present and the Oth element is considered as the solvent in which the n solutes are dissolved. The general assumptions made in the treatment are the following: (i) the solid and the liquid at their interface are in equilibrium during the growth of the solid phase, (ii) there is no diffusion in the solid phase, and (iii) the liquid phase is completely mixed and is therefore homogeneous in concentration. METHOD I In this section a general experimental method will be described which, in principle, is capable of giving an exact description of the liquidus surface and tie-lines. Consider the unidirectional solidification of the liquid alloy specimens L cm in length (freezing either horizontally or vertically). Allow the sample to be frozen very slowly from one end, as indicated in Fig. 1, with complete mixing in the liquid, and then analyze the solid bar to determine its chemical constitution as a function of position, x, along the bar. Let Fig. 2 represent a possible distribution of the ith constituent along the bar. At the point x&apos; the concentration of the ith constituent is C1/5(x&apos;), and the average concentration of the rest of the bar between x&apos; and L is given by C:(X&apos; - L) where [ A(x) c1s(x)dx c1/s(x&apos;-L) = f A(x) dx x * and A(X) is the cross-sectional area at x. In a similar manner. all the Cf(x&apos; - L) may be determined. Thus, the gross artition coefficient k for liquid of composition [Cs(x - L),...Cs(X&apos; - L)] is given by -ko= CUs&apos;)/Cos(x&apos; - L)" k0 = csn{x&apos;)/cs(x&apos;- L) During the freezing of a charge of length L, the liquid composition may vary over a wide segment of the phase diagram and the gross partition coefficient over this segment of the phase diagram may be determined from one, bar. Fig. 3 illustrates the magnitude of Cs(g)/C,&apos; as a function of the fraction g of the bar which has Solidified.2 We can see that the concentration in the bar will vary over a range of about 15 wt pct for C,&apos; = 10 wt pct and k0 = 0.5. It appears that 4 or 5 specimens would be adequate to study a simple binary eutectic phase diagram.

A microelectrophoresis technique has been used to measure the zeta potential of quartz over a range of pH and Ni (11) and Co (Ilj concentrations. Results have been discussed in terms of adsorption of Ni (11) and Co (11) cations and hydroxide precipitates. Possible relationships between the experimental results and the formation of lateritic nickel deposits have been discussed. The adsorption of metallic cations to the surface of silicate minerals is of significance in many industrial and natural processes. In an earlier publication,&apos; the adsorption of Fe (111) to the quartz surface, a phenomenon of importance in flotation, was studied qualitatively using microelectrophoresis techniques. This paper reports the extension of this work to an investigation of the adsorption from aqueous solution of Co (11) and Ni (11) to the quartz surface. The adsorption of these metals was of interest for two reasons; firstly, the importance of such an adsorption process in the formation of nickel deposits by the lateritization of nickeliferous rocks, and secondly, the comparison of electrophoresis data for these metals, whose hydroxides precipitate in the pH range 7-8, with similar data for Fe (111) where the hydroxide first precipitates at pH 2.8. The development of laterites is essentially a near-surface geological process involving vertical and, in part, horizontal redistribution of elements derived from rock-forming minerals. This redistribution of elements leads to the formation of layers within the lateritic profile which are enriched in one or more of these elements and, depending on the nature of the original rocks, continued lateritization may give rise to iron ores, bauxites or nickeliferous laterites. The mechanisms discussed in this paper deal with the last mentioned type of deposit although the considered factors are applicable to laterites in general. Nickeliferous laterites are derived from basic and ultrabasic rocks containing ferro-magnesian silicates. These rocks may be partly or wholly converted to serpentinites. Besides their high Mg, Si and Fe contents, they also contain small amounts of Mn, Al, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu and Zn. The nickel content is usually near to 0.2-0.3%, but for economic use this must be increased during lateritization to over 1% and preferably over 2%. The zone of nickel enrichment is usually at some depth within the lateritic profile. Unpublished work by Mr. O&apos;Brien on nickel-bearing laterites in eastern Australia indicated four visually different types of material which were separated from crushed samples under a stereo-microscope. Although chemical analyses indicated that all four types of fragments contained 2-4% nickel and smaller amounts of cobalt, X-ray diffraction and optical studies revealed only quartz, hematite and chromite as well as, in one of the types, a serpentine mineral. No distinct, nickeliferous minerals were detected. Furthermore, it was possible to extract some 60% of the nickel content of the laterites with cold 0.5N hydrochloric acid. It was therefore postulated that much of the contained nickel was present as amorphous, adsorbed material. In considering this fact, as well as the problem of the actual method of transfer and fixation of elements within the lateritic profile, it was further postulated that the transfer of these elements probably took place partly as solutions and partly as colloids and that the fixation of these was caused by adsorption and flocculation. The existence of nickel in solution in water draining from serpentinites has been confirmed by Smurov.2 Although we have no evidence for the transportation of nickel in the colloidal state, it is well accepted that colloids are important in the formation of laterites. Previous work by Mr. Mackenzie&apos; has already indicated that iron may be adsorbed on quartz under conditions which could be expected in a lateritic profile, but no information was available for nickel or cobalt. Although adsorption possibly also takes place on minerals other than quartz, the latter is significant because silica is an important constituent of the silicate parent rocks. During lateritization, it is released to form free quartz and it is likely that it is initially extremely fine-grained. This would provide abundant opportunities for adsorption and it was de-

A study has been made of the occurrence of Phases having the Cr30-type structure in ternary alloys having the general composition where B cept for iron and copper all the B components are known to form binary compounds having the type structure. The occurrence of the struc-ture type in the ternary alloys was investigated using optical and X-ray metallography. The results indicate that iron can replace virtually none of the cobalt in at 900°C, but substitutes for nickel in up to the approximate composition tually insoluble in V3Ni and 2) and exhibit complete solubility. At 100 nickel can be substituted for cobalt in VSCo up to the composition solubility; and 3) in the system , two solid solutions having the type structure occur. At the same temperature, 1000°C, V3Si exhibits limited solubility for V3Co but is completely mis-cible with V3Ga. Lattice parameters have been determined for all the binary and ternary phases. The solid solutions are discussed in terms of the atomic size and electronic factors which are thought to influence the occurrence of Cr30-type phases. The binary compounds V3Co and V3Ni were found to form peritectoidally from o phases and a vanadium, the former compound at a temperature between 1000" and 1050°C, the latter between 800°and 900°C. The substitutions of nickel and rhodium for cobalt in V3Co were determined not to raise the superconducting transition of VSCo to a temperature as high as 2°K. The occurrence and stability of binary intermediate phases having the Cr30- or A15-type structure (space group o;, Pm3n) have been discussed in several recent papers . Vanadium forms the struc -ture at or near V3B stoichiometry with all the mem -bers of the cobalt and nickel groups in the periodic table and also with Au, Ga, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, and Sb. This paper describes a survey of the occurrence of the CrsO-type structure in ternary alloys having the general composition V3(B, B&apos;) where B and B&apos; are Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rh, Ir, Si, and Ga. The purpose of the survey was to clarify the connection between the position of the B partner in the periodic table and its CrsO-type phase-forming tenden~y.~,~ The survey is part of a broader program concerned with the influence of B-partner substitutions on the superconducting transition temperatures of CrsO-type compounds. The transition temperatures, Tc, of some of the ternary Cr,O-type phases found in the survey are also discussed in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by arc-melting in an A-He atmosphere and were in the form of buttons, weighing approximately 3 g. The metals used in their preparation were received from commercial sources and were in all cases 99.9+ pct pure. The vanadium was spectrochemically pure except for 800 ppm of Si, 200 ppm of Fe, and 200 ppm of Al. For study of each pseudobinary system at least seven alloys were prepared having the general compositions case of alloys containing gallium, melting losses were small, usually less than 0.3 pct of the total weight of the metals charged for melting. Melting losses were somewhat greater for gallium alloys, ranging in general from 0.9 to 5.0 pct. Ternary V-Si-Ga alloys were chemically analyzed and the results are given in Table I. The analyses show most alloys to be within 2 at. pct of the intended composition. Throughout the balance of the paper the intended compositions are used in discussing the alloys. The cast buttons were annealed within evacuated quartz capsules for times ranging from 3 to 6 weeks at temperatures between 800" and 1000°C and water-quenched. The phases present in the annealed and quenched alloys were identified by optical and X-ray metallography. X-ray diffraction photograms were made with powders prepared from the bulk specimens, by the use of a 114.6-mm-diam powder camera with copper irradiation.
