DURING an investigation of the copper-rich portion of the copper-silicon-iron system as part of an extensive research program on P.M.G. alloys, which was begun in 1937 in the research laboratory of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, it became apparent that the binary copper-silicon system below 7 per cent Si needed revision, therefore an investiga-tion was undertaken. Both X-ray methods and microscopic technique were employed. Despite the many investigations that have the clarification of this sys-tem as their object, no two successive reports on the system have agreed in placement of the alpha-phase solubility limit, and uncertainty about the secondary phase first to appear has been voiced several times.3,4,5 It was therefore not surprising, when T. Isawa's6 and M. Okamoto's7 works were reported at the time we were finishing up our experimental work, to find essential disagreement between their results and ours. But when C. S. Smith's latest work on the copper-silicon system8 was published just as we were finishing our laboratory report, it was indeed gratifying to find that the latter's diagram and ours checked in all essen-tial features, except the temperature of the peritectic line above 830° C. Many attempts were made to retain the beta phase during the present investigation, but none was successful. Isawa,6 however, reports that he has been able to obtain X-ray photograms of the beta phase. The structure, he states, is body-centered cubic with a lattice constant of 2.848 A.. at 7.2 per cent Si. Okamoto7 and Smith8 both use the designation Kappa for the hexag-onal phase, and to avoid confusion this designation will be adhered to in the present paper.

The materials that stubilize emulsions of some Southern California crude oils were isolated from the produced crude. These substances were separated into acidic and nonionic fractions by ion exchange chromatography. Each fraction was further broken into groups of homogeneous molecular weight composition by gel permeation chromatography. Both ionic character and molecular weight of the individual fractions are reflected in the properties of the original crude oil emulsion. Specifically, the more acidic and the higher molecular weight fractions appear to be the most effective stabilizers. INTRODUCTION The treatment of oilfield emulsions is a continuing problem for the oil industry. In almost all cases, these are water-in-oil emulsions. Much more is known about the formation and stabilization of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions than of the water-in-oil (W/O) type. To understand W/O emulsions, more information is needed on the materials responsible for their formation and stabilization. This is especially true in the case of oilfield emulsions where the stabilizing materials are complex mixtures of large asphaltene-like molecules. To study the chemical and physical properties of these emulsion stabilizers, it is necessary first to separate them from crude oil. This separation was achieved in the case of two Southern California crude oils. The materials that were isolated appear at first to be little different from an asphaltene mixture. However, if a mixture of distilled water and mineral oil containing about 1 percent of the natural emulsion stabilizers is passed through a colloid mill, the W/O emulsion formed may be stored in the laboratory for many months without any sign of breaking. This could not be done using undifferentiated asphaltenes from the same wells, indicating that there is a real difference between these materials and ordinary asphaltenes. The colloid mill used to generate the emulsion was required because tile natural emulsion stabilizers had very little effect on oil-water interfacial tension. The one characteristic — complexity of composition — that emulsion stabilizers share with asphaltenes makes virtually impossible the exact structure determination of the components of the mixture. For this reason, it was decided to investigate first the influence of molecular weight on the ability of these materials to stabilize emulsions. The emulsion stabilizers were first separated into acidic and neutral fractions according to whether or not the material was retained on a weakly basic ion exchange column. The extraction procedure was not designed to remove basic components from tile oils, and no attempt to isolate such a fraction was made. Following this separation, selected fractions were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. Gel permeation separates according to molecular size, largely independently of chemical or polar characteristics. A heterogeneous mixture is separated into a number of fractions having much more homogeneous molecular weight distribution. A number average molecular weight of each fraction is therefore close to the true molecular weight of the principal component of that fraction. The fraction weights, expressed as weight percent of the sample, and the number average molecular weight of a representative selection of the fractions, will be referred to in this paper as the molecular weight profile of the original sample. DESCRIPTION OF GEL PERMEATION ANALYSIS The first reported gel permeation analyses were for separating partially hydrolyzed protein molecules in an aqueous system using expanded starch granules. AFTER six years of war-enforced idleness, Cyprus copper mines are operating again. This relatively long shutdown seems infinitesimal when compared with something like seventeen hundred years of inactivity that followed the important operations of the ancient Romans, and continued until the twentieth century. The historical records of the ancient operators are scarce but full of interest to those who realize that Cyprus copper production was important more than two thousand years ago. This paper, however, will give only a brief review of the ancient history and the evidence of ancient mining which have been quite fully covered in other publications.1-6 The purpose of this paper is to give a general sketch of the Cyprus Mines Corporation's enterprise in the Island of Cyprus, with special emphasis on those conditions and practices which are unusual. The picture is not intended to be complete, and many interesting details will be omitted. Some of these may be described in subsequent papers covering departmental practices. The principal operations of Cyprus Mines Corp. are in Cyprus, where it has leasehold concessions from the Cyprus Government covering about 50 square miles. It holds additional areas under "Prospecting Permits." The consideration for the concessions is a royalty on production, coupled with minimum annual rentals. Cyprus is a British Colony in the Eastern end of the Mediterranean with an area of about 3000 square miles and a population of about 400,000, of which 65 pct may be classed as Greeks on the basis of language, religious training, and traditions. About 25 pct are Moslems, principally of Turkish extraction. Prevailing languages are Greek and Turkish. A large proportion of the supervisory and administrative staff and practically all of the skilled and unskilled craftsmen and laborers are drawn from the native population. The "overseas" staff constitutes not more than 2 pct of the employees. The majority of these are from the United Kingdom, the British Dominions and Colonies. About one-third are from the United States of America. The topography of the Island is rugged, with mountains and foothills covering more than two-thirds of the area. Between the Kyrenea range rising to 3000-ft elevation, along the north coast, and the Troodos range (maximum elevation 6400 ft) occupying the southwest half of the Island, lies a cultivated rolling plain, the "Mesaoria," dry in summer and watered only by the winter rains and by scanty irrigation from small mountain streams and wells in the spring and summer. Climate and natural vegetation are characteristic of semi-arid conditions. The "urban" population, about one-fourth of the total, lives in the five port towns, Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and Kyrenia, and in the capitol Nicosia, near the center of the Island. The suburban population lives almost entirely in villages or small towns, with very few people residing in isolated country homes.

OUT of the depths of each business cycle we emerge with a stimulus for greater efficiency and a realization of progress in industrial technique. The recent years have not been an exception to this rule, and in retrospect we sense that significant advances have been made in mining practices on the Mesabi Range, with emphasis on speed of production and economy of operation. A survey of such changes does not reveal anything that is fundamentally or basically new, but it is apparent that ideas and machines that have found wide application in industry elsewhere, with necessary modifications, are being put to productive use in mining iron ore. Innovations in transporting and conveying ore from the open pits stand out with greatest prominence, so that, in the main, it will be with these features that this paper will treat, in the review of progress made to this date. The late years have witnessed the development of small deposits for open-pit operation, the cleaning up of pits nearing exhaustion, and in two large operations the approach to the limit for haulage by steam locomotives, owing to grades, making it necessary to recover the ore in slopes, track benches and below the power-shovel limit by a milling and scram operation. For several years small standard-type dump trucks have been used in clean-up or scram operations within the pits, but during the seasor1 of 1936 the first effort was made to use heavy truck haulage in the transportation of stripping and iron ore. The new units in use today vary from 15 to 20 tons in capacity, and are equipped with powerful gasoline or Diesel engines and supplemented by trailers or wagons on rubber or crawler treads. The Diesel engine finds favor with most operators because of fuel economy. These units develop upward of 125 hp. in the 15-ton trucks. The speed of these trucks varies from 2 miles per hour in low gear to 35 in high gear. The transmission affords 12 speeds forward and 3 speeds in reverse.

DuRing the past few years, general interest in the steel-producing and steel-consuming industries has been centered on the so-called "inherent characteristics" of steels. While often vaguely described, these characteristics are known to influence the response to heat-treatment and the hardening characteristics of the material. Although most of the recent papers and discussions have associated the "inherent characteristics" with the austenitic grain size and emphasized the importance of it, comparatively little is known of the variables that may affect the size of the austenite grain. The work to be described in this paper was carried out during the course of a study on the inherent characteristics of tool steel containing one per cent carbon. The discrepancies encountered in the determination and classification of the austenitic grain size led to an investigation of some of the variants influencing the austenitic grain size as determined by standard methods. Methods of Determining Austenitic Grain Size The present methods used for the determination of the austenitic grain size may briefly be classified in two groups: 1. Etching at room temperature to reveal the austenite grain size prior to cooling. 2. Etching at elevated temperatures, cooling to room temperature, and observing the structural conditions that existed at the temperature from which cooling occurred. The outstanding methods of the first group are: (1) the McQuaid-Ehn test, (2) optimum rate of cooling, (3) quenching and etching. McQuaid-Ehn Test.—This established and accepted test does not need much elaboration. It consists of pack carburizing at a definite temperature for a standard period of time and slowly cooling in the furnace. The temperature is 1700" F. (925' C.) and the time is 8 hr. The interpretation and evaluation of this test are fairly well defined in the A.S.T.M.

CONSERVATION of mine timber is becoming in-creasingly important, and the consumer is en-couraged to use treated wood to permit longer life of mine timbers, and attempts are also made to substitute other material for wood. The great diffi-culty in substituting metal and concrete props for wood is the inability of these to give yielding resistance to roof pressure as wood supports do. In Europe, where mine timber costs are somewhat more important than in America, many designs of steel props have been tried, but have been unsuccessful, chiefly on account of inability to give yielding resistances. A metal pit prop that gives the desired effect has been extensively used in European mines and has caused a considerable reduction in accidents from falls of roof. Where mining operations have been sus-pended on account of strikes, conditions were found to be much better where such props were used instead of wood props, and machinery, which would have been destroyed by roof falls had wood props been used, was protected by the use of these yielding metal props. As this prop is adjustable, all the work of adjusting and transferring long props through narrow ways is done away with. It can also be drawn with greater ease and safety than wooden props; when properly used it is practically indestructible. European users have reported savings as against wooden props as high as 80 per cent. It gives audible warning of its working because the sliding action takes place in minute jerks. As the prop yields gradually to pressure its force is taken up by friction between the H sections, and this movement progressively increases the resistance of the prop to the increasing roof pressure. In the early development of the prop, it was designed with two steel members a and b of standard H steel sec-tions of equal dimensions provided with guide claws a' and b', held in frictional contact against each other by two differential wedges, f and g, and a floating link, e. In setting up the prop its two members are drawn out to the required length, the loose wedge, g, is then fitted into the space between the left-hand roller of the link d and the lower member of the prop b, and tapped suf-ficiently tight to prevent any relative movement of the two members from taking place prematurely. The prop is then raised to its intended position and secured in the usual way.

This paper deals primarily with an investigation of ball-mill liners that was conducted by the writer over a period of six years at the Mammoth mill in Arizona. The investigation covered a wide variety of designs of liners in both primary and secondary mills. The comparative results are presented herein as evidence of the extent to which design influenced liner life and mill performance. Flowsheet The feed to the Mammoth mill was a complex, oxidized, gold-silver-lead-molybde-num-vanadium ore with rhyolite, andesite and granite as gangue. Although the ore varied between stopes, the long-term average in character remained substantially the same. Capacity was 560 tons per day.† Fig. I shows an abbreviated flowsheet of the grinding section of the mill. Primary Ball Mill A 3-ft. Symons shorthead crusher in open circuit crushed to 1/4-in. maximum one-way dimension the feed to the 5 by Io-ft. Marcy open-end ball mill. The mill rotated at 80 per cent of critical speed and was charged with 4-in. forged steel balls. Cast balls were used for a few months at a slight reduction in ball cost, but breakage of the large balls reduced the ball size and grinding capacity to a point where the over-all costs suffered out of proportion to the saving in cost of balls. For metallurgical reasons, the finished product of the mill was maintained at minus 8-mesh. This coarse product, plus the very abrasive ore and the absence of fines in the feed, caused abnormally rapid wear of the mill liners. The resultant high operating cost led to the most extensive phase of the investigation. In order to clarify the difference in design of the various types of liners used, Fig. a shows the profiles with the arrangement in which grinding balls of maximum size would lie on the face of the liners. In the year 1875, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, acting on incorrect information concerning the production of oil and gas, established what has become the law of the land for the governing of oil production. While the decision was ideal for the refining monopoly which was completed in that year, there is no evidence that the court was in any way influenced by that refining monopoly. The evidence indicates that the court accepted the view of the royalty owner and independent oil producer. Throughout the life of the refining monopoly it accepted this law, which was so evidently to its advantage in securing cheap raw material. The same policy continued until the development of the exhaustion theory and the entry of the various units of the former monopoly into the production of crude oil. It is curious that no one doubted the new theory of shortage sufficiently to feel the need of changing the law. When the theory entered the economic field sufficiently to raise crude oil prices beyond justification it shortly disproved itself, but by this time the question of split ownership in producing fields made a change from legal error to justice too complicated to be undertaken by the large companies. Not even the ardent advocate of unit operation dared to carry the question to the United States Supreme Court, which has never been asked to pass on the complete question. The impossible position of the producing industry, hemmed in on one side by court law compelling wasteful production and on the other by the national law against cooperation, lasted until the demoralization of 1927 led to cooperation within a state and under state guidance. Since that time control of production has grown with the bringing in of each new field and at this time has the active support of the Department of the Interior in such ways as are definitely legal. As in 1875, the royalty owner and independent producer are opposing by all possible means the rational conduct of the business of producing crude oil. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IN a former paper* attention was directed to the various firms of pumping machines employed for permanent work in mining and metallurgical processes. The following is simply a collection of memoranda of work done of a temporary character, and is presented by way of comparison with other work of similar nature. In close proximity to the charcoal furnace at Pine Grove, Cumberland County, Pa., is a large deposit of superior hematite iron ore, which has been worked for a number of years, and from which many thousand tons of ore have been taken by open pit workings. In July, 1874, the furnace was blown out and operations at the bank suspended, the machinery for draining being removed except a plunger pump, 18 inches in diameter and 66 inches stroke, operated by a steam-engine by means of rods. The pit was allowed to fill with water, and no steps towards its reclamation were taken until November, 1877. At that time the pit was a pond of water at the base of the mountain, having an area of about four acres and a depth of seventy feet. As the pumps, rods, etc., had been submerged for over three years, and partially buried by the mud washed down from the banks, and as it was determined to change the location of the pump for future operations and drive it by water-power, a temporary pumping apparatus was determined upon for reclaiming the pit and keeping it drained until the permanent arrangements could be completed. By opening an old adit about 10 feet of the water was removed, and the area decreased to three acres. The inflow of springs was found to be 250 gallons per minute, and the amount of water contained in the pit was computed to be 45,000,000 gallons. As the inflow would undoubtedly increase while the water sank in the pit, provision was made for removing at least 60,000,000 gallons, at the rate of 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 gallons per day. The company determined to employ a Heald and Cisco centrifugal pump driven by an oscillating engine by means of a belt. Steam was supplied by four plain cylinder boilers, each 36 inches diameter *Transactioiis of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, vol. p. 455.

The following correspondence relating to a paper bearing the above title, presented by J. F. Wolff, at the New York meeting in February, 1917, and published in the Transactions, Volume LVI, page 142, has passed between the author of the paper, and Mr. Anson G. Betts, and is interesting, although it was received much too late for incorporation in its proper place in Volume LVI. ANSON CT. BETTS, Asheville, N. C.-1. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff if he finds-from analysis of the iron formation and of the iron ore, and from the relative amounts of each in each unit area of the formation, unleached and after leaching, that the iron remains entirely insoluble and the total quantity still remains present; or whether he finds that some of the iron is removed, or possibly even added by deposition from the water passing through the formation. 2. The water that passed into the iron formation had to go somewhere; was it absorbed by underlying formations through hydration, or, after passing through the ore formation, did it come to the surface in springs at a lower elevation, or how did it escape from the ground? 3. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff whether he finds that the iron formation in the sedimentary series does not, come next to the quartzites and generally between the quartzites and slates. J. F. WOLFF, Duluth, Minn.-1. In common with others, you appear to have some hesitancy in accepting the fact of the removal, by solution, of the enormous quantity of silica which has been leached out of portions of the Biwabik iron formation, thus forming orebodies of merchantable iron ore. I believe that even Dr. Waldemar Lindgren once hesitated to accept this fact. However, the evidence is so simple and absolutely conclusive that the fact is established beyond all question. At the contact of orebodies with their rock walls, the bands of iron ore in the orebody can be seen in contact with the corresponding bands of original iron oxide in the rock wall, and the chert layers in the rock wall can be seen to give place to fine granular material (fine silica and iron oxide) and pore space. This is especially noticeable where slumping at the rock walls his not been so great as to displace the layers in the orebody from their contact with their corresponding layers in the rock wall.

HAVING previously described the metals to you, before I proceed any farther I do not wish to fail to tell you, as I promised to do in the first chapter on metals, what I have learned through experience concerning the semiminerals, although this may seem to you outside our proposed subject. Since these are not produced by Nature as all rock or all metal they are called semiminerals by speculative physicians. Many kinds of these are found; those that resemble rocks are earthy, very difficult to liquefy, and much more adapted for adorning paintings than for anything else. Those that liquefy with fire, like sulphur, antimony, marcasite, [22] calamine, zaffre, manganese, and others, resemble the metals almost like brothers. Some others are more watery so that they dissolve in water, although they are fairly dense, and are obtained and reduced to their, perfection by means of water. These are the salts, vitriol, rock alum, and saltpeter. To these, as a watery thing, belongs also quicksilver, as it is commonly called because of its motion. Although it appears. not only liquid, but very liquid, this is not at all similar in its effects to any of the above. Indeed, it retains its same being until its very form is consumed. Since the reasons for its effects are almost impossible to investigate, I do not intend to speak of them here or to enter now this maze of speculation, because I wish to make definitely clear to you what this quicksilver really is. Therefore, leaving aside opinions and disputes, I shall take only those of the said semiminerals that I know are useful. First we shall see the method by which the semiminerals can be found and then how they are to be extracted from their matrices. These, perhaps, have no less need of effort and industry than the metals since they are substances completely hidden in the rocks or in the earth. For this reason some of these that are sought are made use of by means of fusion after they have been mined from their mother mountains, and some others need to be disposed by a certain maturative corruption, now with moisture and coldness, now with dryness and heat, as with waters, rains, frosts, or long baking in the sun, with fire, or even with a strong reheating within themselves. Most of them can finally be brought to the desired end by means of solution with water and fire.

The disorientations between s?nall grains, whose growth has been arrested at an early stage of recrys-tallization, and the deformed matrix in cold-rolled aluminum single crystals were determined using transmission Kikuchi line and electron diffraction patterns. The orientations of the recrystallized grains were found to be random, and the disorientations of these grains with the matrix weve found to be intermediate to large. This leads to the conclusion that the observed vecrystallization began in small areas of large disorientation present in the cold-worked structure. heavily cold-worked thin sections of aluminunz single crystals and of polycrystalline aluminum and nickel were produced directly by a mechanical technique. The specinlens thus prepared were heated with the electron beam to bring about vecrystallization during observation in the electron microscope. Motion pictures taken du.ring heating and the electvon, microg.raphs taken both before and aftev heating allowed the recrystallization process to be traced to its ovigin. Re cvystallized grains originated in very s,mall regions of the cold-worked structure and developed through rapid migration of high-angle boundaries. The boundaries either were present as such in the matrix or were formed out of dense dislocation networks. SIGNIFICANT advances have been made in recent years in the study of nucleation of recrystallization using the technique of transmission electron microscopy of thin metal foils. Bollman1 in a study of heavily rolled polycrystalline nickel found support for the Cahn-Cottrell2,3 theory of nucleation. According to this theory nuclei form by the initially slow growth of subgrains formed through polygonization. During this initial period of slow growth (the incubation period) the migrating boundary of the subgrain increases its disorientation with the cold-worked matrix and thereby increases its mobility to become a rapidly migrating high-angle boundary. Bailey4,5 investigated the annealing behavior of several metals deformed both in tension and by rolling and concluded that recrystallization took place through the migration of high-angle boundaries. With low deformations these boundaries were present in the metal before deformation. With high deformation it was not possible to tell whether the boundaries were pieces of the original grain boundaries or were produced either during deformation or by polygonization during ameal- ing. Direct observation during heating of metal foils indicated that subgrains form by polygonization and grow at an uneven rate. The grain size obtained decreased with decreasing foil thickness indicating that the foil surface resists boundary motion. Votava,6 in heating stage experiments on rolled copper, observed nuclei to appear suddenly and grow in jumps of differing magnitude. However, he found no special dislocation configurations where the nuclei appeared. Fujita,7 as a result of a study of subgrain growth in heavily worked aluminum, concluded that the boundary of a recrystallized grain initially forms from the boundary of a group of subgrains. This occurred by a process of deposition of vacancies and dislocations in the group boundary as the boundaries within the group disappear. HU8,9 directly observed a similar process in heating stage experiments on 70 pct rolled Si-Fe single crystals. The growth of subgrains appeared to proceed by a coalescence mechanism. The observed fading away of the boundary between two subgrains was explained by the moving out of dislocations from the disappearing boundary into the connecting or intersecting boundaries around the subgrains. The subgrain size and degree of disorientation with the surrounding structure were thus increased. With the increase in disorientation occurred a corresponding increase in boundary mobility, which eventually allowed the boundary to migrate rapidly. This process was observed to occur within "microbands" consisting of parallel narrow segments disoriented by a few degrees present in the as-rolled structure. The conclusion of Rzepski and Montuelle10 that growth is preceded by the coalescence of blocks through disappearance of their common boundaries supports this view. In contrast to Hu's coalescence model for nucleation were the conclusions of Walter and ~och.""~ Working with the same material as Hu, of the same orientation and rolled to the same reduction, they concluded that nucleation occurred by the Cahn-Cottrell mechanism. They observed, in agreement with Hu, that recrystallization began in the "microband" regions which they referred to as "transition" bands. Bartuska13 studied subgrain growth in heavily rolled nickel using a beam heating method in the electron microscope. PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyro-phyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constitu-ents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent.

This paper describes a process developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal and pyrite flotation which leaves the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse containing 10% sulfur and 30% carbonaceous material was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material; and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocycloning) may be used to increase the pyrite : coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimates for the process show a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse, but these do not include labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation. The development of this process consisted of three parts: (1) exploratory tests, (2) op-timazation tests and (3) confirmatory tests. The objectionable qualities that sulfur imparts to coal have been commented upon from early times, and they have become more objectionable as the uses of coal have grown. In whatever form coal takes — raw, carbonized or gasified —the sulfur content remains objectionable, and therefore its compounds are removed as completely as possible. It has long been known that sulfur occurs in coal in different forms. In 1861, sulfur was said to exist in the state of sulfuric acid in combination with a base; in combination with iron as iron pyrites; as bisulfides of iron; and in combination with the organic elements of coal.' Pyritic sulfur is a term loosely used to cover the sulfur associated with iron in its various forms. The mineralogically recognized forms are pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe 1-x S) and marcasite (FeS2). The particle sizes of pyrites vary widely. Isolated grains of marcasite smaller than 15 microns have been found disseminated through coal.2 Hair-like "veins" of pyrite filling cracks in vitrain have been found. At the other extreme, lumps or nodules of pyrites large enough for removal by hand picking have been encountered. Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur, does not exist as discrete particles, but is instead intimately associated with the coal structure and thus it is impossible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical or mechanical means.2 In the preparation of coal for its various markets, the pyrite minerals (pyrites) are separated from the raw coal feed. This separation process concentrates the pyrites in the tailings or other waste products. It would be desirable to recover these pyrites for three reasons: (1) Pyrites are potential sources of sulfur and iron. In 1967, for the fifth consecutive year, Free World consumption of sulfur exceeded production.3 Propelled by the shortage, the domestic price of sulfur has risen from $24 to $38 per long ton (bright). (2) The refuse, when placed in piles, becomes ignited. The pyrites (FeS2) bum, giving off SO,. Thus, the pyrites are a cause of air pollution. (3) Also, the pyrites undergo chemical reaction when exposed to air. The refuse is leached by waters which result in stream pollution due to the water-soluble iron and acidic reaction products. Coal refuse also contains coal minerals and clay minerals. Therefore, any process for recovering the pyrites must successfully separate them from the coal and clay minerals. In the study discussed here, ten different bituminous coal refuse samples were successfully upgraded in pyrite content. These samples represented a wide variety of coal waste materials from Pennsylvania and other states. The variabilities of the sulfur and coal contents are shown in Table I. The extremes are Sample J, a high sulfur-low coal, and Sample B, a low sulfur-high coal. Fe —Indicates iron, as determined by a stannous reduction-dichromatic oxidation method. S—Indicates sulfur, as determined by the ASTM "Eschka" method for sulfur in coal.

PRECISE knowledge regarding the effect of heat treatment on the properties of steel has made possible the detailed specifications and instructions covering optimum heat-treating temperatures and practices that are in current use. A distinct contrast is presented by the metallurgical treatment of steel adjacent to a fusion weld, as such steel is subjected to each temperature from room temperature to fusion temperature, and cooled at a rate that is not generally controllable but is predetermined by the nature of the assembly to be welded, the kind of welding used, and the surrounding conditions. This is true regardless of the type of fusion welding: oxyacetylene, electric arc, thermit or flash resistance. Therefore it seemed desirable to investigate the effect of this metallurgical treatment on the characteristics of carbon steels commonly used for welding, by a detailed study of metal subjected to each temperature range; i.e., each heat-affected zone. Oxyacetylene welding was chosen for the investigation because of the experimental facility of accurately segregating and studying each temperature zone. The nature of the zones produced by other types of welding is the sane. The difference is primarily a matter of dimensions of each of the temperature zones involved. The advantages and disadvantages of the extent of the zone are of prime moment, and are discussed after the presentation of the detailed zone study. No mention is made of the fused metal proper, as this has been the subject of much published research and the nature of the solidified metal is fairly well known.
