DURING the past 5 years no subject has aroused more interest or received more attention among mill operators than flotation. One reason for this is, undoubtedly, the remarkable success of the process in Australia where that country has risen to the position of furnishing one-fifth of the world's Supply of zinc. The plant of the Butte & Superior Copper Co., designed by James M. Hyde in 1912, was the first important large flotation plant in this country; other installations have been made since then with considerable frequency, particularly so in the last 2 years. Without going into complete detail, it may be safely said that although flotation is a highly successful commercial process, it is more or less on an empirical basis. Upon scanning the literature, it is found that the flotation investigations have, in the main, dealt with a solution of the problems which accrue to practise; until recently no attempt was made to remove the difficulties in the way of the formulation of a consistent and harmonious theory. Of late this phase of the work has been receiving considerable attention, particularly by the United States Bureau of Mines at its Salt Lake City station, by the Mellon Institute at Pittsburgh, by the General Engineering Co. at Salt Lake City, by many of the mining schools, and private individuals almost ad infinitum. There is, at present, an enormous amount of laboratory work being carried on in flotation research, and probably the time is not far away when a generally acceptable explanation of flotation phenomena can be Set forth. However, at this time, it seems as though the current technology is befogged with a super-abundance of contradictory evidence; this confusion can only be dispelled as time proceeds and the knowledge of the subject becomes more complete.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale continuous tests of kyanite ore from Georgia and South Carolina to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial grade kyanite concentrates by flotation. The research indicated that combinations if sulfuric acid and petroleum sulfonate may be used effectively for flotation of kyanite from quartzite-kyanite ore. This report summarizes the results of these tests, and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates with a high recovery of the contained kyanite. Extensive deposits of kyanite occur in the southeastern United States. The reserves of these deposits, if developed, are adequate to supply the United States with 35-mesh kyanite concentrate for many years at the present rate of consumption. According to Espenshade and Potter,' the kyanite-quartz rock type deposits in this area contain about 100 million tons of ore averaging 10 to 30% kyanite. The tonnage of kyanite-bearing gneiss and schist is much larger than the tonnage of kyanite-quartz rock, but the kyanite gneiss and schist are appreciably lower in grade. The largest deposits of kyanite-quartz rock are in the Farmville district, Virginia, and Kings Mountain district, North Carolina-South Carolina, and at Graves Mountain, Ga. Of the known deposits, only four were being mined for kyanite in 1 967. These deposits are near Farmville and Dillwyn, Va., Clover, S.C., and Washington, Ga.

Roof, pillar and floor stability is a most important requirement in underground coal mines because it represents the leading cause of fatalities. In future coal mine planning the geotechnical aspects must often be minimized owing to unavailability of data. It is, therefore, very important to include a geotechnical investigation as part of the coal exploration program. Data which should be collected basically include the geological discontinuity characteristics, the rock strength characteristics and the groundwater aspects. Many times the only source of such data is the exploration boreholes. Therefore, an emphasis must be made to extract the maximum information from the core and the borehole. Data collection methods can include the preparation of detailed geotechnical logs for the roof, coal and floor. Laboratory strength testing will provide estimates of the mechanical properties of the various lithologic types. Slaking and swelling tests provide an insight into the stability characteristics of the rock materials immediately enclosing the coal seam. The boreholes may be used to provide permeability and pressurization data. Having developed a suitable geotechnical data base allows various stability prediction methods to be used. These include a geotechnical appraisal of the roof and floor units, depositional environment methods, multiple overlay techniques, hazard analysis techniques and classification/rating systems for roof and floor. The basic geotechnical data and the stability prediction methods form a basis upon which preliminary rock mechanics designs may be developed. Of particular importance to future coal mining are those designs relating to longwall mining because most companies are thinking in terms of the greater safety and greater productivity offered by longwalls. Items which should be ad- dressed when considering a longwall system include the panel layout in terms of a total mining plan, strata mechanics, roof/floor bearing capacities, face support requirements, face length, entry and pillar

The conversion of a successful research and development effort into a money-making business venture requires careful attention. Problems of a business nature, such as market size, product selling price, raw materials and fuel availability and cost, financing factors, local and national taxes, licensing arrangements, etc. must, of course, be considered and resolved. In addition, the technical questions involving the scale-up of pilot plant or laboratory results to the full-scale plant must be resolved in order to avoid the financial disaster that attends a major delay in the startup of a commercial facility. The very difficult and demanding task of providing the interface between the research laboratory and the profitable metals processing plant will be discussed with examples from the author's extensive experience. After I had accepted the invitation to present a paper on the above subject of the interface between R & D and production operations, I began to give some serious thought to the subject. The program chairman had told me, in conveying the invitation, that what the committee had in mind was a discussion of positive and negative, forces in that interface, based on "gray-hair" experience. I am, therefore, at least physically qualified! My first reaction was one of mild shock; after over twenty years in the direct pursuit of the conversion of research and development findings into plant operations, I had never tried to sort out my , experience into a formal system of DO'S and DON'TS for the edification of posterity. However, after a little further reflection, I realized that this carries no stigma. No one has been able to formulate such a set of rules, and it is not really very likely to be done. Particularly if they are to be practical. I shall therefore settle for a more modest goal; I will simply discuss the factors that I have come to believe are the most critical in insuring that re- search and development results are converted into successful operation.

The question whether the kind, rank and grade of coal is in any way determined by the kind or type of plant from which it originated has been a problem since coal was first studied. Some investigators claim that the kind of plants has contributed none of the attributes that characterize the differences found in the various coals; others claim that all differences are caused by the contributing plant; and others hold that only a few characteristics are inherited from the kind of plant from which the coal originated. Most coalologists, however, give this matter no thought. It can easily be shown that the kind of plant which contributed to a coal had a marked influence on its kind and type. A number of factors enter into this problem, and all unrelated ones must be carefully eliminated, including metamorphism caused by the pressure of the cover, earth movements, mountain building and higher temperature. Only the fundamental substance—the plants out of which coal was formed—• and the causative conditions that gave rise to a peat swamp and the conditions imposed upon the plant and the plant substances during the formation of the peat swamp can be considered. Everything else being equal, the question then is, how far do different classes and types of coal owe their differences to different kinds or types of plants? Geologic Age of Coal Coal has been laid down in almost every geological period since the Devonian era. Even as early as the middle Devonian some coal was formed; although of no value it has great scientific significance. The most valuable coal was deposited during the Carboniferous. The coals of England were formed during the Mississippian, and most of the valuable coals of America, Europe and China during the Mississippian and chiefly the Pennsylvanian. I. INTRODUCTION THE word recovery as used in this paper is applied in its broader sense and not limited to wells producing from horizons of unconsolidated sands. Certain problems connected with the winning of petroleum from such horizons present themselves while drilling is in progress and should be considered before drilling is commenced wherever unconsolidated sands are expected. Maximum recovery depends not alone upon efficient pumping methods but also upon the selection of a proper drilling system and the completion of a well especially adapted to the extraction of these oil-bearing sands. II. DRILLING DETERMINING FACTORS IN SELECTION OF METHOD The selection of a drilling method for the development of a region in which the oil reservoir consists of unconsolidated sands is based on the following considerations: (1) Character of the formations overlying the reservoir; (2) thickness of the oil-bearing stratum or strata; (3) thickness and character of water or gas sands; (4) gas pressure to be encountered or expected; (5) total depth of well.

A study of certain fundamental characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives has been made. A discussion is given of the factors affecting the life of the cartridge and the relation between explosive strength and oxygen content. The explosive properties of L.O.X. cartridges packed with a variety of lampblacks, gas blacks, and other materials have been experimentally determined by means of the ballistic pendulum, Bichel gage, and measurement of the rate of detonation. DURING the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered. The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. Industrial research may be defined as a critical and exhaustive investigation to create new and better ways of doing things. The results of industrial research are new and improved products, processes, and techniques. This broad definition, of course, covers investigation of all subjects by either individuals or groups of people, and this chapter aims to examine the purpose (what research tries to do), and methods (or how research is done) as applied in the mineral industries. Concepts and History The idea or concept of organized research probably originated in the universities of Europe. There, groups of scholars banded together for discussion and application of their particular specialty to a common problem. Publication of the conclusions drawn from such investigations gave scholars in other areas the opportunity to review and criticize the work of their colleagues, and one of the hallmarks of scientific research work is the publication and criticism of the results of the investigation. It was not until the late nineteenth century that the concept of organized research for the profit of industry was recognized. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a large number of industrial enterprises sponsored organizations to study the application of the physical sciences with the aim of making discoveries that would result in profit to the sponsoring organization. The tangible benefits accruing from these activities were so great that they, in turn, fostered several other methods for the support of organized research activities. For the large problems involving public interest, United States Government scientific research laboratories were set up. As the demand of smaller enterprises for research activities increased, research institutes and consulting laboratories were organized. In Europe the idea of common industry sponsorship of research centers grew and many large research organizations there were sponsored by associations of manufacturers. Finally, in the United States

The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense &o suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial mining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of alluvial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into Russia." The statement itself is not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward. Lounsbury says : One might fairly infer from the way in which it [newspaper English] is often spoken of that with the steadily increasing circulation of this sort of periodical literature there is no hope whatever for our speech. "Of that with" is lamentable. The construction is thoroughly bad, and it is bad mainly because the misplaced prepositions have tangled the meaning. I suggest:

THIS paper presents briefly some of the principal results of 3 ½ months field work during the summer of 1938 in the Chichagof mining district, southeastern Alaska. The report is preliminary and presumably will be followed later by a more complete report to be published by the Geological Survey. The paper is concerned principally with the structural geology of a block of steeply dipping graywacke as revealed underground in the Hirst Chichagof and the Chichagoff mines, the two principal mines of the district. The two mines have produced about $16,000,000 worth of gold and silver. The attitude of the graywacke, which is locally cut by dikes and sills of aplite, is remarkably uniform and trends about N. 62° W. The average dip is about 67° SW. The graywacke is cut by large faults, the best known of which are the Hirst and the Chichagof, whose average trends are about N. 30° W. and average dips about 75° SW. The faults at some places split into the bedding of the graywacke and at others are deflected from their normal trends for considerable distances along the bedding. The relative movements along the faults was northwest and up at about 30° for the south-west or hanging-wall sides. The ore bodies are elongate quartz lenses in the faults. Most of the quartz is mineralized but locally large quartz masses are too low grade to be mined. The emplacement of the ore bodies appears to have been structurally controlled in large part by the intersections of the faults with the bedding surfaces. Places where the faults split or are deflected appear to have been particularly favorable places for ore deposition. There has been some post-quartz movements along the faults but it is thought that such movements have not been extensive enough to greatly modify the original positions and shapes of the ore bodies.

The manufacture of iron and steel is one of the largest of our industries; and in point of size of single plant and equipment certainly the biggest of all industries. By the general public it is generally considered a prime example both of the marvelous technical advances achieved by modern science and engineering in the design and operation of equipment and of the efficiency of big business in the coordination of men and materials. Actually the operation of its basic processes has not changed significantly in either theory or fundamental design of equipment in the past 75 years. Though many other process industries have been born and developed, and not seldom completely revolutionized, during this period, the primary processes of making iron and steel are still carried out along the lines laid down, and in the equipment originated so long ago, by Bessemer, Siemens and Martin, and subsequently expanded to practically the modern scale by Carnegie, Schwab and Captain Bill Jones in the eighteen eighties and nineties. The application of the principles underlying the continuous counter-current physical and chemical interaction of solids, liquids and gases, which have been so successfully used in the rapid evolution of our chemical process industries, has been very largely lacking in the steel industry. In the days of the last-named giants, especially Carnegie, the steel industry made great and rapid technical progress. Carnegie's ever driving idea (as later with Ford in the production of automobiles) was the finding of new and better ways of making cheaper steel. Carnegie himself was a steelman, and so long as he dominated the industry its technical progress was rapid; and he, like Ford, was vastly successful financially as well, since his costs were continually being driven lower than those of his competitors by his advances in steelmaking technique.

OUTSTANDING symbol of the machine age, the steam shovel needs no introduction. Few individuals there are, in the United States at least, that have not watched with fascination the almost human motion, the more than human strength, the rhythm of the whole steam-shovel cycle of crowding, digging, swinging, dumping, swinging, and crowding again. A mass of steel with some copper and other metals, fed with water and coal, guided by a single alert and dexterous operator, or perhaps two, does the work that would require 50 to 500 men or even more. The largest shovels working in the copper mines have loaded into waiting railway cars as much as 10,000 tons of ore in a single 8-hour shift. With no equipment but hand shovels, it would, in fact, be impossible to duplicate the work with any number of men; first, because they would be in each other's way, and second, because the steam shovel can lift single pieces of rock weighing 5 or 10 tons with effortless ease. Of recent years, internal-combustion engines and electric motors have displaced steam as a motive power in many instances; and of course the detailed design of the shovels has been improved immensely. Whereas the largest dippers used 30 years ago had a capacity of 3 ½ to 4 cu. yd., today the 350-ton shovel used at Chino has an 8-yd. dipper, as has the 320-ton shovel at Chuquicamata. Incidentally, for stripping at coal mines a shovel having an 18-yd. dipper is in use. However, the principle of operation of the modern shovel, regardless of the size and type of motive power, is essentially the same as that of the earlier shovels. It is fair to say that the indispensable of open-cut mining is the steam shovel, or, to be more precise, if perhaps less picturesque, the power shovel. DURING the past 4 or 5 years, much has been added to the detailed geologic knowledge of the Mesabi Range. This has not been in the direction of discovery of any new fundamental facts, but of detailed study, subdivision and correlation of different parts of the whole formation and of individual orebodies. Prior to this time, mining engineers in the district were so engaged with the commercial interests of exploring and developing orebodies that close geologic study and subdivision was done in only a few instances. The demand for refinements of work in this direction has caused caused extensive structural subdivision and correlation to he done in all exploration work during the past 4 years by the engineers of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. Such work has become a commercial necessity rather than a scientific refinement, and at the present time is being extended to all parts of the Range. In the summer of 1914, the author of this paper wrote a series of articles on the orebodies and special features of the Mesabi Range, which was published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, issues of July 17 to Aug. 7, 1915. Since that time studies of subdivision of the iron-formation have been extended considerably. The principle feature of this paper is the presentation of the subdivisions of the iron-formation. To this is added a discussion of the relations of the orebodies to the gentle folding and fracturing of the formation, and special features of the Range. The outline will he as follows: I. General geology. II. Subdivision of Biwabik iron-formation. III. Relation of orebodies to folding and fracturing of the iron-formation. IV. Special features. Acknowledgment is due to W. J. THERE is nothing new about drag-line dredging for placer gold. The use of the separate unit for excavating preceded the large barge with excavator mounted upon it, which has reached a high state of perfection through use in every part of the world. But at present there is a vogue for a small, inexpensive plant combining a drag-line excavator on cater-pillar mounting and a gravel-washing plant on a floating barge. The most efficient ones use a bucket of 1 to 2 yd. capacity with boom from 40 to 70 ft. long. The barge varies from 20 by 30 ft. to 36 by 48, and carries the trommel screen, pump, riffle sluices and power engine.

The first discovery of gold in Montana is credited to François Finlay, a half-breed, from the Red River country, in Canada; he went to California during the early days and learned there how to wash the gold from placer deposits; then, on his return, he crossed Montana and found gold on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, on Gold creek, a minor tributary of the Hell Gate river, in what is now Deer Lodge county. That was in 1852.* Finlay did not find enough gold to induce him to continue at work, but six years later a group of miners, led by the brothers James Stuart and Granville Stuart prospected on this same creek, obtaining about ten cents to the pan. They, however, were harassed by the Blackfeet Indians, and they were also handicapped by lack of proper tools; so they too desisted from further operations. Two years later, in 1860, Henry Thomas started to work on Gold creek with three sluice-boxes hewn out of green timber that he cut on the spot. With this simple apparatus he won from $1.50 to $2.00 per day. This may be considered the fist instance of systematic mining in Montana. Meanwhile the Stuarts went to Fort Bridger, in southwestern Wyoming, where they remained as traders until 1861, when, again lured by the gleam of gold, they returned to the valley of the Deer Lodge and resumed prospecting, using 10 sluice-boxes that were brought from Walla Walla, in Washington, 425 miles distant. This paper describes a pilot plant built on the campus of West Virginia University by the Federal Bureau of Mines station at Morgantown, West Virginia, for gasifying pulverized coal in a mixture of oxygen and steam at pressures in the gasifier up to 450 psig. The work upon which this report is based was done under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University. The goal of Bureau of Mines work at Morgantown is development of a low-cost process for producing mixtures of carbon monoxide and hydrogen for the modified Fischer-Tropsch synthetic-fuel plants, which may be shifted to produce hydrogen for coal-hydrogenation plants. Gasification with oxygen offers the inducement that the gas may be generated at the pressure at which the gas will be utilized in a gas-synthesis plant. Since the optimum pressure for the synthesis appears to be about 400 psig, the gas should be produced at approximately 450 psig to take care of pressure drops in the purification train and control valves. If the gas is generated at the pressure of utilization, only the oxygen need be compressed, not the raw synthesis gas. This means a saving in power of 5 hp per hour per 1000 cu ft (CO + H2), which is approximately a saving of 4 cents per gallon of gasoline. For example, consider a commercial plant generating 18,000,000 standard cubic feet per hour of raw gas that would produce approximately 10,000bbl of liquid product per stream-day. Assume that this gas would be 85 pd CO + H2 and that the oxygen required would be 320 cu ft per 1000 cu ft of CO + H2. The following estimate is based on a commercial centrifugal compressor. If the 18,000,000 std cu ft per hour of synthesis gas is compressed to 450 psig with 74 pd efficiency, 107,000 hp is required for compression. The subject of fuel-briquetting has attracted much attention on the part of engineers. and investors for the past 15 or 20 years, and especially in recent years, during which a number of plants have been built, with more or less commercial and technical success. Our technical literature contains numerous descriptions of certain processes, and discussions of the industry in general. For a history of the development of the art in the United States, and for descriptions of many of the processes which have been tried, reference may be made to the files of our Transactions, and, for more recent information, to a paper by C. T. Malcolmson, read before the First Annual Convention of the International Railway Fuel Association in June, 1909. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the briquette-plant of the Solvay Process Co. and the Semet-Solvay Co. at Detroit, Mich., which, after a period of long and costly evolution, is now operating satisfactorily on a commercial basis. I believe that it will be of interest to some of our members to have the details of operation, power-consumption, labor, etc., as worked out on a practical and commercial scale in a going operation.

THE MEMBERS of the Phelps-Dodge, Phelps-James co- partnership differed widely from one another in certain aspects of temperament and personality; but in one thing Anson Phelps, William Dodge, and Daniel James were fundamentally alike. They were all bred in the English Puritan tradition. Their creed, moreover, was the stern, militant, uncompromising creed of John Calvin and John Knox. The present generation, harshly intolerant of such a creed, has little understanding of the authority it exercised on the thinking and conduct of its adherents or of the contributions that those same adherents made to human welfare and social progress. The men who accepted its authority "were characterized by a blend of strong individualism and an equally strong sense of social duty, and they submitted their own souls to the same searching scrutiny that they applied to their business ledgers." To all three of the immediate founders of Phelps Dodge, their religion was the most real and important thing in life. It was with them day and night, in joy and sorrow, in loss and prosperity, in their most trivial personal affairs, in business transactions of the greatest moment. It was with

INTRODUCTION OF the several interesting physical properties of clay which have claimed the attention of investigators in recent years, none is more important than the behavior of the material when heated to temperatures above those of dehydration. Some of the problems to be solved are: 1. The mineralogical changes that take place in firing. 2. The relation between temperature and change in constitution, shrinkage, porosity, etc. 3. The importance of the time factor, as duration of firing, either in reaching a given temperature, or of exposure to a constant temperature. Mineralogical Changes As a result of fusion, reactions take place between the constituents of a clay, which results in a reorganization of the mass, and the formation of new compounds. Of the new minerals developed, sillimanite is the one usually recorded, and has been referred to by a number of observers.1 There appears to he a difference of opinion, however, regarding the temperature at which it is formed. Thus. Klein2 notes that sillimanite forms only above. 1300° C., while Mellor claims that it can develop below 1200° C., the difference in results being conditioned by the time factor. In Klein's experiments the test pieces were fired in 12 hr., while in Mellor's, the temperature rose from 800° to 1180° in 24 hrs., and occupied the same time in cooling back to 800°.
