It is practically useful to separate copper from nickel at the fire refining stage of blister copper by transferring nickel in electrochemical inert silicides which are being concentrated further into the tank-house slimes. The treatment of copper melt by silicon-containing reagents is resulted in lowering the interfacial tension of the melt, its deoxidizing, selective siliconizing of in-melt nickel and forming a by-product with fluxing properties. Si-containing reagents have positive influence on results of fire and electrolytic refining, and further pulverizing of copper in plant conditions.

The leaching experiment used by bacteria on the low grade sulfide copper ore which is difficult to leach was carried out. Some leaching bacteria which have good physiological and leaching activity were isolated and domesticated, and were adapted to leaching ore. The effective domesticated method was put forward. Some technological parameters such as ore acidification, potential controlling, leaching method, ore granularity, leaching acidity, leaching liquid quantity and acid consumption were obtained by column experiment and leaching ore in situ under the ore well. The results show it could leach 30.62% of copper from the low-grade sulfide copper ore within 24 weeks by column leaching method, and the bioleaching rate of copper is 22.83% by leaching in situ under the ore well in 8 months.

The existing Mitsubishi Process line at Naoshima Smelter and Refinery has been operating successfully since 1991, and its present production capacity is 270,000tpy of copper. Furnace relining works have been carried out every two years to coincide with the compulsory bi-yearly boiler inspection, but the next target is to extend the furnace refractory life to four years, while still undergoing the mandatory boiler inspection every two years. Although the damage of hearth bricks beneath lances in the Smelting furnace was a matter of concern, it was reduced by controlling gas velocity and evening solid distribution to each lance. The life of bath level bricks in the Converting furnace was also a concern, but four-years continuous use of the bricks was achieved in the course of the last two campaigns. Several other improvements were also carried out to the cooling systems during the shutdown in 2005 to ensure longer campaign life. This paper summarizes recent improvements implemented to enhance the advantages of the Mitsubishi Process.

Method of high-temperature reduction of oxygen-bearing sulfurous gas has been developed at Copper Plant (CP) of MMC ?Norilsk Nickel? Trans-Polar Division (PD) with the aim of producing elemental sulfur from Vanyukov furnace? off-gas. Non-explosive reduction technology of oxygen-bearing sulfurous gas by methane utilized at Copper Plant has been designed to separate the processes of gas heating and sulfur dioxide reduction based on different kinetic of the reactions oxygen fixing and SO2 reduction. First, natural gas promptly reacts with oxygen contained in the process gas to heat a gas mixture up to the temperature of sulfur dioxide reduction (1200C). Then isothermal reduction takes place within 1 sec. Combustion chamber (pre-chamber) design developed based on the above principles is presented. Practical experience of the two reduction reactors operation at CP since 1996 proves high efficiency of the developed reduction process. The volume efficiency rises dramatically thanks to the fact that both fuel and reducing agent are fed into the reactor volume in the form of high-speed turbulent jets providing an intensive mixing of the reacting gases. On condition of equal internal volume of the reactors, the developed process offers higher efficiency of reagent interaction resulting in sulfur conversion exceeding 90%, as compared to the equilibrium one.

In the course of carbonization of coal under a rising temperature condition, volatile matter (V.M.) is released. The kind and amount of V.M. released depend on the kind of coal. Components of V.M. are tar, hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8), CO, CO2 and H2, which are released in this order as a function of carbonization temperature. When the carbonization of coal under a rising temperature condition is interrupted at a certain temperature, TC, max, semi-coal-char with residual V.M. is obtained. If some optimum interruption-temperature is chosen, small but most suitable amount of V.M., namely H2, is retained. When the semi-coal-char thus obtained is heated again under the same rising temperature conditions but up to more than TC, max (1), the residual V.M. is released from just around TC, max (1). We propose novel iron ore agglomerate bearing such semi-coal-char with some strength. While simple iron ore agglomerate bearing coal char will start the reduction reaction as solid-solid reaction at somewhat higher temperature, the proposed one will start the reduction reaction as gas-solid reaction at somewhat lower temperature but a little higher than TC, max. Samples of semi-coal-char and novel iron ore agglomerate bearing such semi-coal-char have been prepared and evaluated.

"The majority of chromium electroplating operations employ Cr(VI)-based baths. During these processes, Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III). Besides Cr(III) other undesirable impurities are present such as iron, copper and nickel. The build-up of the impurities limits the lifetime of the plating solutions. Since the disposal of spent chromic acid baths is expensive and can cause significant environmental degradation, there is increasing interest in finding ways to regenerate waste chromium liquors.In this work, an electrolytic cell separated by microporous ceramic diaphragms was used to regenerate chromium plating solutions. The effect of the ceramic diaphragm structure parameters, such as porosity and pore size, on the performance indicators of the electrochemical reactor (fractional conversion, current efficiency, product yield, specific energy consumption) was investigated.The fractional conversion, the product yield and the current efficiency increased and the specific energy consumption decreased with the decrease in porosity.IntroductionChromic acid is widely used in industrial applications such as steel manufacture, metal finishing industries, aluminium anodising, pasivation of cadmium, magnesium, and zinc, etching of plastics and another industrial operations related with processing ferrous and no ferrous metals [1]. Simple compartmental models of a laboratory batch gibbsite precipitator were used to investigate the influence of the number of compartments, the local shear rate and solids distribution on the crystal size distribution (CSD) under the conditions where aggregation is the dominant mechanism. In the current work, a power law relationship was assumed between the local agglomeration and shear rate. The simulation results showed that both the local shear rate and solids distribution have significant effect on the CSD responses, and the interchanging flows has a lesser impact with its influence strongly depending on the former two factors. Overall, the results reveal that in an aggregation controlled precipitation system, the influence of each of the factors on the CSD depends on the local hydrodynamic conditions in the precipitator, as well as their interactions.

The key point of the CX-EWS process is the conversion of lead compounds, contained in the active mass of spent batteries, into lead sulphide. The obtained lead sulphide is leached with ferric fluoborate electrolyte to dissolve lead and oxidize the sulphur from sulphide to the elemental form. The lead-rich solution is fed into a diaphragm electrolytic cell depositing lead and regenerating ferric fluoborate. The introduction of sulphate reducing bacteria technology in the sulphidization step of the battery paste improves dramatically the economics of the CXEWS process, reducing the costs of chemicals, avoiding gypsum disposal and minimising the unit operations of the process. This paper describes in detail this technology change with reference to the economics of the process.

Fouling of heat recovery process equipment may significantly decrease their heat transfer efficiency. In Copper Flash Smelting process flue dust tends to form build-ups on the heat recovery boiler walls. Thermal transportation properties of copper flash smelting flue dust and its components have been studied. The effects of porosity and temperature on thermal transportation properties have also been determined. The results indicate that dust and its components are effective thermal insulators and build-up layers on the boiler walls are likely to decrease greatly the heat transfer efficiency of the boiler. Decreasing dust layer porosity has a strong increasing effect on thermal conductivity and increasing temperature has a slight decreasing effect on thermal conductivity. The results may be used in CFD-modelling and optimisation of the process.
