Flotation was used to achieve improved separation of magnetite from the float and sink products obtained from heavy medium separation and to reduce the load of the medium cleaning circuit. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed on in-plant samples from the Homer City Coal Perdition plant to determine what effects variables such as medium density, particle size and magnetite source had on the efficiency of the process. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were used to determine the applicability of the process to other selected coals from central Pennsylvania. It was observed that flotation was very effective in the separation of magnetite from coal. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite recovery was approximately 99% with a magnetite grade ranging from 95 to 99%. The grade of the magnetite decreased as the ash content of the coal increased and the particle size of the magnetite decreased.

Declining US ore grades along with skyrocketing energy, materials, labor, and regulatory costs underscored the urgency for technological innovation in the mineral processing area. Re¬liance on the scale-up and automation of unit operations was the sector's primary battle plan. Debate continues on the upper size limit of concentrating plants and whether process controls should be centralized or distributed in the mill. In the materials handling area, the economics of large-scale and mobile systems, particularly conveyors, were well documented in the literature. Comminution, the most costly and energy consuming area of the processing flowsheet, saw improvements in process controls and liner designs. The trend toward larger grinding units stalled somewhat during the year owing to some operational problems at commercial plants. Research and development of apparently less expensive physical separation processes-that also boast recovery of cleaner and more environmentally acceptable products -gained momentum during the year. Because of escalating capital cost requirements for new plant capacity, the year saw a greater interest by mill designers to re-examine existing capacity. The focus here is clearly to modify or retrofit unit operations with more efficient components as an alternative to installing more costly new equipment. Mining activities involve excavation from underground to the surface of large quantities of ore (e.g. uranium and its disintegration products) (Dumitrescu, 2002, 2007). Material with limited content of uranium, deemed as sterile or low-radioactive is mainly stored on the surface. These wastes modify the configuration of the disposal areas and affect the quality of the environment and the landscape. This paper presents both analytical and numerical models related to stability assessment of uranium mining waste dumps. It is focused on the calibration procedure of the numerical models, in order to minimize risk error during stability prediction and avoid long term environment pollution.

The evaluation criteria for cost comparison of the Gearless Drive, also called Ringmotor or wrap-around motor, as variable-speed drive with a Twin Drive System using synchronous motors are reviewed. Both mechanical and electrical components of the drive system are considered. The evaluation criteria are described and for the cost comparison the applicable method is demonstrated. The cost comparison is based on a medium and large sized mill system. Each drive package will display cost details with regard to capital cost, maintenance, power losses, overall efficiency, overhead and loss of production. As conclusion the benefits and disadvantages of the two drive/mill packages will be presented together with a payback diagram.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Mexico Bureau of Mines is conducting an assessment of mineral resources in the 36,800 km2 Mimbres Resource Area, southwestern New Mexico. Included in the assessment is a literature-based evaluation of sand and gravel that utilizes third party geologic information. The USGS has developed a method based on existing 1:500,000 scale geologic maps supplemented by remote sensing, statistical models, and point data such as test hole or pit records. The method defines the areal extent, quality, and quantity of aggregate.

It is well known that titanium and zirconium alloys offer superior corrosion resistance in the oxidizing sulfuric acid environments present in sulfide pressure leaching operations. The use of these materials is limited, however, due to their pyrophoricity; several accidents attributed to titanium equipment have been described in technical literature, and other, minor incidents·occur regularly1 • We describe an application of a commercial titanium alloy, Nb-55 Ti, with suitable mechanical properties, corrosion resistance similar to Grade 2 Ti, and featuring a significantly reduced field of ignition conditions

Taconite tailings reclamation, especially the stabilization of tailings ponds, .dams, and slopes, can be effectively accomplished through the use of appropriate vegetation. Utilizing vegetation provides both aesthetic and ecological enhancement of a site while at the same time protecting tailings structures against wind and water erosion. Generally, the methods and techniques for establishing vegetation are well known; however, there are many site-specific factors that can alter a particular reclamation approach. Those factors include slope gradient, tailings material size, solar exposure, and physical and chemical properties of tailings. In addition to the site-specific factors, variations in climate, geography, and physiography of a region can have a pervasive influence on the success or failure of a revegetation program. Both the site-specific and regional factors control reclamation planning in such areas as plant variety selection, methods and times of plants establishment, maintenance techniques, and subsequent monitoring methods. As a result of this multifactor relationship, it is important to establish a data base that identifies both the site-specific and location conditions in order to tailor the reclamation plan to the specific area. When an appropriate data base has been collected, detailing the various site-specific and regional factors that will influence a revegetation program (in the absence of previous testing), it is very beneficial to apply experimental techniques to develop the reclamation plan for a specific site. The reclamation plan for a specific site may include several techniques adapted for the differences found within the specific site as the result of topographic or other influences. Considering this, the Reserve Mining Company and Dames & Moore undertook to develop a successful reclamation plan based on a detailed test plot program conducted at the Mile Post 7 location.

In 1988, the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) published an information bulletin stating that whole diesel exhaust should be considered a probable carcinogen. Since then, regulations across Canada and the United States (Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA) have looked at appropriate exposure limits for underground mine workers. In Canada, an interim standard of 1.5 mg/m3 Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) has been adopted by some provinces and is being looked at by others. MSHA is considering levels as low as 0.5 mg/m3 soot. Golden Giant, being aware of regulatory developments, decided to look at means of reducing diesel particulate on thier large production machinery. This machinery (LHDs and haulage trucks) is powered by Detroit Diesel 71N Series engines and is used to produce 3000 tonnes of ore/day with a longhole mining technique. Having looked at the various control technologies, it was decided to evaluate the potential of using diesel particulate filters with a copper-based fuel additive for regeneration (the process by which collected particulate is burned off). This paper outlines the control technology used and the results of the field evaluation indicating the benefits to the underground mine worker.

Micron-sized gold disseminated in lower Cambrian siltstone has been found at the Sterling mine near Beatty, NV. A shoestring-shaped body has been developed by central and fringe drifts and is being mined via a modified retreat room and pillar system. The siliceous ore crushed to 5.08 cm (2 in ) is stacked to 4.6 m (15 ft) over a layered sand, gravel, and impervious PVC base. Gold is leached using a 0.1% cyanide solution and deposited on activated coconut shell carbon. Stripping of the carbon by hot solutions of 1% NaOH and 20% Ethanol yields overall recovery of about 75% of the fire assay head.

PROLOGUE Nowadays, where production costs and energy costs are increasing and at the same time requirements in fineness and purity of industrial mineral products are getting higher and higher, industry has to look for more efficient grinding systems and developments to produce these products more economically. Therefore lots of new developments in high energy jet mill pulverizing have been made. In the main, however, these developments involved more or less just the new principle of fluidized bed jet pulverizers but not the older spiral jet mill principle. In some cases, especially in the filler industry where laminar minerals are used and higher aspect ratios are required, the spiral jet mill principle has advantages in a better delamination of these minerals. To comminute minerals down to products with a d97 < 3 µm, the specific energy consumption increases up to 2,000 kWh/t – 3,000 kWh/t or even more, depending on the grindability of the mineral. So the production of these fine materials is quite an expensive task. But jet mill grinding is and will be the most favorable method to produce micro-products and in the near future nano-products, despite the high energy consumption.

Federal mine safety regulations prohibit the recirculation of face air In a gassy Class III metal-non metal mine. Tg Soda Ash, Inc, operates a 2.0M ton/yr (2.2 million st/yr) underground gassy Class III trona mine In southwest Wyoming, currently liberating approximately 5,700 m3/day (200,000 ft3/day) of methane. Because of the low methane emissions and the incombustibllity of trona, it was decided that Tg would be an excellent environment to test recirculation at a U. S. gassy mine, for possible future use by Industry. A research program was begun with the cooperation of MSHA, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Utah, and Tg. Initial testing centered around re-using shop air under¬ground. Next, conduct a continuous miner section recirculation test to see how the face contamination was affected by 305m (1,000 ft) and 610m (2,000 ft) recirculation distances. A district test followed to examine the effects of the critical parameter - respirable dust. Finally, a long-term program to study respirable trona dust transportation and deposition in mine airways to plan for district fan siting and effects on face air dust levels.

Fine-coal screening can be one of the most critical operations in a modern coal-cleaning plant. The yield and quality of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits is controlled as much by how efficiently 0.15 mm (100 mesh) particles are sized as on the performance traits of the fine-coal cleaning device itself. In addition, the increased interest in effective fine-coal sizing operations indicates that many operators have also discovered its importance in affecting the quality and yield of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits. This paper describes the three most prevalently used fine-coal screening technologies and discusses their sizing mechanism, performance, and application.

The electrochemistry of sphalerite and chalcopyrite was investigated under both open-circuit and applied potential conditions. Emphasis was placed on the selective dissolution of sphalerite from a mixture of sphalerite-chalcopyrite flotation concentrates as a function of applied potential, acid concentration, pulp density, and time. Morphological studies using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also carried out with chemically leached, galvanically leached, and unleached surfaces of sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Selective dissoulution of sphalerite could be achieved if the mixed chalcopyrite-sphalerite concentrate slurry was maintained at a negative applied potential of -0.4V (SCE). Probable mechanisms involved in the selective dissolution of zinc are disscussed.

Big and getting bigger. Barrick Gold Corp., the third-largest gold producer in the world, began production in September — ahead of schedule — at its Meikle Mine. At a scheduled full production rate of 12.4 t/a (400,000oz/year), it will be the largest producing underground gold mine in the United States. The $180-million Meikle Mine is located on Barrick’s Goldstrike property in Nevada and has 205 t(6.6 million oz) of gold reserves. The compact Meikle deposit has an average ore grade of 23 g/t (0.68 oz/st), making it one of the highest-grade mines in the country.

The number of uranium in situ leach operations has increased significantly since 1975. As of May, 1980, there were a total of 27 active projects, including 16 commercial scale operations (or under construction) and 11 pilot scale operations. The south Texas uranium district and Wyoming have been the most prominent areas in early field experiments as well as in commercial application of this new recovery technique, although in situ leach tests are now being conducted in Colorado and New Mexico. The growing number of commercial-scale operations is accepted as prima facie evidence that in situ mining now offers a third option along with open pit and underground mining for winning uranium from sandstone host rocks. It is estimated that in 1979 about 9 percent of the nation&apos;s total uranium production was from in situ mining. However in situ mining of uranium is not without its environmental controls. The primary emphasis of environmental controls falls into two catagories; namely, control of the leach solutions during mining and demonstration of ground water restoration. Finally this paper briefly reviews the Bureau of Mines research program in uranium in situ mining.

In the last five years Eldorado Resources Ltd. (ERL) has undergone a major expansion and modernization of its uranium refining and conversion plants. A new refinery for processing yellow cake to UO3 was constructed at Blind River in northern Ontario and started up in 1985. Its rated capacity is 18,000 t/a uranium as UO3. At Port Hope, Ontario, ERL&apos;s new UF6 conversion plant has been constructed. This plant started up in 1984. It utilizes the novel, wet-way process to produce UF4 and gives the company a UF6 production capacity of 14,500 t/a U. Also at Port Hope is Eldorado&apos;s ceramic UO2 powder production facility, commissioned in late 1980. It has a capacity of 1700 t/a uranium as UO8. With the completion of these capital projects, Eldorado has the largest and most up-to-date refining and conversion facilities in the western world. This paper reviews the refining process and process design. The methodology used to start up the Blind River plant is described as are some startup difficulties, solutions that were developed, and the resultant current operation.

In 1910, Colonel Boyce Thompson, who owned Inspiration (now Cyprus Miami) and various other mining interests, formed the Magma Copper Company and leased the Silver Queen claims around Superior, Arizona. At the same time, he purchased other claims around the Silver Queen claims from what was then called the Magma Mine. The mine continued to operate until 1982 when Newmont Mining Company, who owned Magma Copper Company, shut down the operations due to high costs and low copper prices. When Magma was spun off by Newmont as an independent company in 1987, new studies of Superior were started. It was clear from these studies that the mine had been shutdown and over 1400 employees laid off for two basic reasons: first, as a resu1t of a mine plan that was technically flawed and second, be-cause of very high production costs mainly due to the low productivity from a very high cost work force. During 1989 a plan was formulated to re-open Superior with the determination to over-come the problems that resulted in closure. A new mine plan was developed and a management style developed that promotes team work and high productivity.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company&apos;s Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck&apos;s AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. Basic dimensions and weight of the T282 are: ? Overall length, 14.5 m (47.5 ft). ? Overall width, 8.7 m (28.7 ft). ? Loading height, 6.5 m (21.2 ft). ? Height - body up, 13.9 m (45.9 ft). ? Although Mexico is known for its important base-and precious-metal deposits, and lately oil, some industrial minerals play an important role in the Mexican economy. Sulfur, the most important industrial mineral produced, accounts for approximately 7.5 percent of the total value of mineral production. This commodity is followed by fluorspar, which accounts for 6.4 percent. Predominantly, the fluorspar deposits are very high grade (75 percent CaF) and are contained in lower Cretaceous limestone in the states of Coahuila and San Luis Potosi. Base-metal deposits in the area of Parral (notably San Francisco del Oro), however, have become important fluorite producers in their own right. (San Francisco del Oro has 12 percent fluorite gangue.) Salt from the Guerrero Negro solar-evaporation ponds in Baja California account for 6 percent of the total shares; phosphate from Baja California also accounts for 6 percent. Barite from man to deposits in Lower Cretaceous limestone in Coahuila and exhalative deposits in the Paleozoic section of Sonora account for 1.0 percent. In addition, Mexico is an important producer of gypsum, graphite, and celestite. Although graphite and celestite are not large-scale operations and thus do not contribute much to the Mexican economy, the Mexican graphite and celestite deposits are among the most important in the world; Mexico is one of the world&apos;s few sources of celestite. The celestite is in the form of large, high-grade mantos in Cretaceous limestones in northern Mexico.
