Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.

INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. New compound classes previously unknown in flotation practice of non-sulphide ore beneficiation have been developed. The presented study results consider amine salts of alkyl sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonic acid used as primary collectors, N-methyl amides of alkyl phosphoric acids - as auxiliary modifying collectors and pentaerythritole ethers of tall oil - as flotation accelerators. These reagents synthesized from accessible raw material are almost ready for commercial production. Efficiency of the new reagents for various non-sulphide ores has been demonstrated in a series of flotation tests.

Results of in situ investigations are discussed providing comparisons of rock mass deformability measurements by three methods: 'petite sismique' technique, the Goodman borehole jack and flat jacks. The tests were performed in exploratory tunnels constructed for site characterization purposes of an underground hydro-electric scheme. Due to the large number of data (41 petite sismique measurements, 45 Goodman jack tests and 19 flat jack measurements), it was possible to evaluate thoroughly the testing techniques employed. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the problems encountered in the interpretation of the results and to offer suggestions for selecting in situ tests. INTRODUCTION In situ tests are expensive and time consuming but they are an important aid in tunneling applications since they can provide deformability data of rock masses in contrast to rock material characteristics obtainable from small laboratory specimens. Some in situ tests are relatively easy to perform but their reliability may be in question unless a comparison of the data obtained by several different test methods is possible. Although many in situ techniques are available for determination of rock mass deformability (1), those more convenient to use are the Goodman jack, flat jacks and 'petite sismique. These methods are considered convenient because the Goodman jack is a borehole device; flat jacks can provide not only deformability data but also information about the stress field around excavations; while 'petite sismique' is based on seismic refraction surveys. Accordingly, these three methods have been selected for comparison.

The authors describe novel aspects of ground reinforcement and treatment as related to soft ground excavation for tunnels throughout the world. Insitu reinforcement for cut slopes (soil nailing), as underpinning (reticulated micropiles), and as direct tunnel support (infilaggi) is introduced. Ground treatment focuses on new aspects of permeation grouting (by the tube'a manchette system), and on jet grouting-a very powerful and positive new technique. Recent developments in equipment, materials, methods and instrumentation are reviewed, with special reference to major tunnelling projects in Italy and Singapore.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton, NV is associated with a polymetallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shale, limestone, and dolomite. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte Cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins contain gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of about 7 Mt (7.7 million st) that averages 1.7 g/t (0.05 oz per st) gold and 17.2 g/t (0.5 oz per st) silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of I t (35,000 oz) of gold and 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of silver.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

Monitoring on Whites waste rock dump at Rum Jungle has provided a unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness of a cover in the medium term. Temperature and oxygen concentration profiles have been measured continuously, from some years before the cover was put in place in 1983 until the present. Lysimeters have been used to measure water infiltration rates. Heat and oxygen transport processes in the dump have been modelled and compared with field data, enabling oxidation rates to be quantified both before and after the cover was put in place. It has been found that the cover reduced the overall oxidation rate to between one third and one half of the uncovered rate. There is evidence that both the overall oxidation rate and water infiltration rate have increased in recent years.

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

INTRODUCTION Rapid transit systems involving near surface tunneling in hard rock are becoming more numerous, especially along the northeast corridor of the East Coast. Tunneled systems are under construction in Washington, D.C. and are being planned for Atlanta, Buffalo and Baltimore. Near surface tunneling is defined for this paper as being that in which the crown is 100 feet or less below ground surface. For Rosslyn Station, the total cover ranged from 52 to 70 feet. The rock cover, however, ranged from 40 to 50 feet which is slightly less than the station height and about two-thirds of its width. Rosslyn Station (Fig. 1) is the only station excavated completely in hard rock in the Virginia portion of the 98.5 mile Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system. The station site, oriented in a north-south direction beneath a main thoroughfare and flanked by multistory office buildings, was fixed by the need to serve a dense population center at a specific location and geologic conditions were a secondary consideration in siting. There was no previous underground rock excavation in the Washington Metropolitan Area of the size and scope of Rosslyn Station that offered a practical case history guide to the geologic conditions and excavation problems to be encountered. GEOLOGY The regional geology of the Washington Metropolitan Area is divided into two physiographic provinces by the northeast trending Fall Line (Fig. 2). As manufacturers and mine operators develop and implement proximity detection systems (PDSs), they need to be mindful of the systems’ compatibility with mineworkers’ tasks, and possible unintended consequences. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed mineworkers at mine sites that currently use or previously have used PDSs on mobile equipment, including shuttle cars, battery haulers and scoops. Mineworkers reported that mobile PDSs affect loading, tramming, section setup, maintenance and general work on the section. Mineworkers discussed the operational effects and increased burden, exposure and risk. Mineworkers also suggested that improved system task compatibility, training, logistics and PDS performance might help address these issues. Manufacturers and mine operators implementing this or similar technologies may also consider mitigating task incompatibilities up front, performing additional site-specific usability testing and restricting the use cases of the system to improve performance.

Modern mechanical raise drilling was first introduced into the United states in 1962. This method of safely, economically raising a shaft has steadily increased in popularity since that time. This steady growth has been largely enhanced by the many advantages to be gained by mechanical raise drilling, as well as by the increasing reliability of the equipment required. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the state of the art of raise drilling to include: the various applications and advantages; the equipment requirements, including a comparison of the various types and sizes of machines and rock cutting equipment; equipment performance; and future trends.

The possibility of producing metallic chromium from Cr2O3 via the aluminothermic route, with no external energy supply, was the subject of this laboratory-scale research. The experimental study focused on investigating the individual effects and quantitative optimization of the charge contents, i.e., the additions of CrO3, Al powder and CaO (or BaO). The highest chromium recovery of 98% was attained with the additions of 12% CrO3 and 1.2 times the stoichiometrically required amount of Al powder. The optimum CaO addition giving the highest chromium recovery was found when the CaO/Al weight ratio in the charge was equal to 0.3. When BaO was used, however, 95% Cr extraction efficiency was obtained at a BaO/Al weight ratio of 0.15.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system entails significant capital and operating expense; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision making are provided for an actual mine decision.

It has never been easy to finance within mining sector. Leasing may be an alternative source of finance for mining investments. Leasing is acquiring the right of usage for an asset for a definite period of time without having the ownership of it. In this study, a model for analyzing the lease financing opportunities for mining investments under risk and suitable for establishing a satisfactory leasing policy for both lessee and lessor is developed. Using the model, it is possible to obtain an expected equilibrium lease amount acceptable by both lessor and lessee and also the expected range of the equilibrium lease amount as a decision tool. First the existing leasing policies are mentioned, then the developed model is described. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in establishing a leasing policy. In conclusion, the usefulness of the model is discussed.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

INTRODUCTION Rock bolts are one of the most common mine support systems in use today with approximately 90 to 95 million used annually in the nation's coal, metal and non-metal mines. By far the largest majority of these are steel bolts with mechanical expansion shell anchors. Many theories have been advanced to explain the ground control achieved through the use of rock bolts. Most of the theories are applicable to a specific set of circumstances, geology, geometry, rock properties and in-situ stresses. Examples are those which relate the beam building or strata-hanging theories of ground support used in the rectangular openings of a coal mine(l). In tunneling and most metal mining, either circular or horseshoe shaped openings are normally used. Here, bolts may be used to develop a radial stress around the opening, which adds stability to that opening, or merely pin blocks of rock back into more stable ground so that they cannot slip. In most cases, the bolts are torqued to a specified value to seat the anchor and to achieve the pre-load or tension that is desired. To be effective, however, this tension cannot be lost through bolt slippage or creep frequently caused by blasting, moisture attack or raveling of the rock surrounding the drill hole, etc. Furthermore, in soft rock or in oversized holes, sufficient anchorage cannot be achieved with the mechanical anchor, and in very brittle rock the concentration of forces produced by the expanding anchor might cause a crack to propagate from one drill hole to the next. Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.
