Manufacturer welded components may suffer from high level of residual stresses which can cause premature cracking and decrease the life of the components if they reach values close to the yield strength of the material. In the present work, a robotized hammer peening technique is simulated by an impact machine and the residual stresses generated by the indentation are measured. To better understand phenomena behind residual stresses relaxation by hammer peening, the impact energy level was changed. 304L steel plates were hammer peened with 10 impacts. The contact between the hammer and sample surface was always at the same location. The strains on the surface close to the impact location were recorded during the test using strain gauges to follow residual stresses variations. At the end of the test residual stresses were measured indepth using hole drilling technique at 8mm from the impact center. The micro-hardness was monitored to evaluate the affected zone by the hammer peening. This approach gave a good estimation of the energy and number of blows to be used for efficient relaxation of the manufactured parts.

The Serra Verde Project is located in the northern part of Goiás state, Brazil, and comprises 49 mineral claims covering an area of 69,814 ha. The Serra Verde deposit is a rare earth element (REE) enriched weathered granite comparable to the weathered granite, or ionic-clay, deposits found in southeastern China. The Mineral Reserves of the Serra Verde Project total 388 Mt (Measured and Indicated) at an average grade of 1,484 ppm of REE oxide (REO). Several hundred agitated leach and column leach tests have confirmed recovery of about 40 to 55% of the REE, except for Ce, using simple desorption techniques. Present plans call for a heap leach operation followed by precipitation of impurities and precipitation of a pure REE carbonate suitable for refining and separation. The project plan includes initial production of 5,000 t/a of REO, with a high content of heavy and critical REO, rising to 10,000 t/a of REO. This production rate will be obtained by mining of the Mineral Reserves over a 22-year mine life at an initial rate of 6 Mt/a for the first four years with the mining rate thereafter increasing as required by grade and production targets.

A seismic monitoring system was installed in 2005 at Dongguashan Copper Mine, the deepest metal mine in China. Based on the seismic events monitored in situ, the possibility of rockburst prediction and prevention is investigated in this paper. The characteristics of space-timeintensity of mining-induced seismicity and the seismic response to mining are studied in detail using the seismic data in Dongguashan Mine. A conceptual model and a criterion of assessment of hazard seismic nucleation are proposed for Dongguashan Mine. In this model, the mine seismic stiffness method is adopted for rockburst prediction within the framework of the unstable failure theory. To analyze rock failure cases in Donggauashan Mine, the rate of the ratio of stiffness of rock in nucleation area to its surrounding area is proposed as a criterion for rockburst prediction.

Inco Limited, Ontario Division is currently in the process of decommissioning the Whistle Mine site located near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The most significant component of site decommissioning involved relocating approximately 6.4 million tonnes of acid-generating waste rock to the open pit from two adjacent stockpiles. An engineered cover system was designed for the backfilled pit to reduce the long-term production of acid rock drainage. Geochemical modelling was conducted to assess the effectiveness of various cover options on the longterm water quality of the backfilled pit. Results obtained from performance monitoring of cover system field trials at the site and estimated full-scale construction costs were used to select an appropriate material for the cover system barrier layer. The two-dimensional soil-atmosphere model VADOSE/W was used to develop a calibrated model of covered waste rock based on field data obtained from the cover trials, which was subsequently used to predict net percolation and oxygen ingress through various cover system alternatives for site-specific climate conditions. Erosion and landform evolution numerical modelling was completed to assist in designing the runoff management system and final landform for the pit cover system. The potential impact of various physical, chemical and biological processes on the sustainable performance of the pit cover system was also considered in the design process. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction of the backfilled pit cover system.

Basic Assumptions about PeopleMost people in an organization, regardless of level, take pride in their work and generally want to do a good job. When performance falls off, there is usually some explanation other than the employee not really caring. People like to know their exact responsibilities and clearly what is expected of them. People like to know where they stand with the boss and would like to be evaluated on what they do and accomplish, rather than on what others think or feel about them. Further, people like to be rewarded for their good results, indeed, to understand what motivates people, we must look at what happens as a result of their actions. Another belief is that supervisors often have a greater influence on the performance of their people than they fully realize. Simply letting people know how important their performance is can have an impact. Based on a case study of dozer engine records, the author suggests an easy method of deriving useful information for managerial decisions in a step-by-step manner.More specifically, the paper deals with the following topics:• determination of the most economical replacement time,• determination of reliability characteristics,• determination of the number of replacements, and• determination of the number of spares.IntroductionThe mining industry collects a lot of information about every aspect of its activities, an example of which appears in Table I. In Table I , the distribution describes the operating hours at failure of 56 different dozer engines used in severe applications. Besides calculating an average and possibly a standard derivation from the data, little else is derived, at least from a statistical point-of-view.More information can be obtained from these records that could help management in the decision-making process.To illustrate this point, the sample data appearing in Table I will be analyzed in detail by making use of well-known concepts in reliability engineering.Distribution of DataTable I represents a distribution obtained from the recorded hours cumulated from the operators' time cards. The operating hours have been divided into fourteen classes for each 1000 hours of engine running, e.g . all engines scoring an operating time of between 1001 and 2000 hours formed a class , those scoring between 2001 and 3000 hours another one, etc. Generally, the class interval should be a multiple of the equipment preventive maintenance check period.The minimum acceptable sample size should be large enough to ensure that the score in each class interval is at least one. Pumpable, two-component resins for anchoring rock bolts provides significant advantages over traditional cartridge resin and cement grout systems where fast and easily adaptable support is required for difficult ground conditions. Cartridge resin anchoring with rock bolts is often ineffective in oversized, fractured and washed-out holes. Cement grouting of cable bolts is frequently plagued with QA and QC issues related to the grouting process. Installation of cable bolts with resin injection techniques is routinely completed in cycle allowing blasting immediately after cable bolting. Xstrata Nickel has evaluated the Minova Resin Injection System since 2007. The Nickel Rim Mine and partner Minova have tested and validated the Resin Injection process for bolting procedures including Hollow Fiberglass Bolts, Rebar, Modified Cone Bolts and Cable Bolts. The resin injection process is adaptable to most bolting processes and equipment. Currently, Nickel Rim Mine use 2 resin injection products with different set times to grout deep cable bolts and development support in highly variable ground conditions. The product predictability and adaptability in application along with a high crew acceptance continues to make this support process part of an adaptable ground support system. Product consistency and quality significantly reduce the quality control concerns for ground support in highly variable ground conditions.

"The underground operations of Kidd Creek Mines uses an average of 450 U.S. gpm water during regular operations, and discharges an average of 800 U.S. gpm through consecutive staged pumping lifts of 1200f t.Water is used as a flushing medium for the drilling operations and as a dust suppressant for drawpoint mucking. The water retains an average of 5% suspended solids by weight which is removed underground before being pumped to the surface. This paper outlines the treatment of the mine water for the removal of suspended solids which are chemically treated to settle out as a sludge product of 60% solids by weight. This process reduces the sludge handling operation by 50%. The sludge is systematically disposed into the ore passes.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonne s of copper, lead, zinc and silver ores annually from its No. I and No.2 underground mining operations. Both mines use a sublevel blasthole stoping method of extraction.Water from the underground operation passes through a series of surface settling ponds, where it is treated to remove heavy metal ions from solution. A blend of the pond effluent with fresh water from Kidd Creek, supply the underground with water at an average rate of 450 U.S. gpm. Water flows from the production zones through coarse sumps and into a main pumping station. There are five main pumping stations underground, three in No. I Mine and two in the No.2 Mine.The No. 2 Mine pumping stations are located on the 4800 level and the 3600 level. All water below the 3600 level to the shaft bottom is controlled from the 4800 pumping station. The water from the 4800 pumping section is combined with water from the remaining levels of the No.2 Mine at the 3600 pumping station. Water from the 3600 pumping station is pumped to the 2400 pumping station in No. I Mine.The No. I Mine pumping stations are located on 2800, 2400, and 1200 levels. All water below the 2400 level to the shaft bottom is controlled through the 2800 pumping station. This water is pumped to the 2400 pumping station. The 2400 pumping station also controls the water below 1600level to 2400 level."

"While not taking issue with the general thesis expressed in Dr. Ridge's analysis of the role of genetic concepts versus observational data in ore exploration (Ridge, 1983), the criticism could be offered that the author tends to slight the importance of conceptual (i.e. theoretical) models in mineral exploration.As a general rule, observational data in science lacks significance and utility without a theoretical construct to organize those observations. Theory in turn dictates what observations are made-and which ones are judged important. Thus, for example, prior to the elaboration-and acceptance- of the current model for volcanogenic base metal deposits, the structural aspect s of these deposits were most closely observed and studied by explorationists. The nature of the enclosing rocks and any attendant alteration was given minimal attention, and certainly didn't figure prominently as an exploration guide.Similarly, the importance of alteration features to exploration for porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits was only perceived when a theoretical model was developed to account for these aspects. Indeed, many of these porphyry copper deposits were regarded as epigenetic vein deposits by geologists of an earlier era observing and examining on a different physical scale-and with a different theoretical bias.In constructing and evaluating such conceptual models, explorationists primarily rely on observation data and proximate associations; speculative thoughts as to ultimate provenance or crustal evolution clearly play a subordinate role, as Dr. Ridge argues. This, however, should not obscure the fact that concepts and theories do indeed exert a major influence in mineral exploration."

"The paper outlines the history of rubber mill liners beginning with the awarding of the first North American patent rights in 1923. It includes the early-day applications and installations of the 1920s and 1930s through to their present-day application. Over-all rubber mill liner design is discussed in relation to present day installations employing rubber mill liners in various grinding applications. A brief overview is given of a manufacturer's procedures to produce rubber mill liners.IntroductionIn early 1910, it became apparent that the productive life of the silver mines in Cobalt, Ontario, could be substantially prolonged by mining lower-grade ores.The mining of lower-grade ores required the establishment of treatment facilities which initially employed jaw crushers, stamp mills, jigs and concentrating tables. The recovery of silver in other than a coarse metallic form required the additional step which was introduced at that time: the cyanidation of silver concentrates from the tables. The resultant requirement for increased and improved recovery led to the introduction of grinding mills, i.e. tube mills.Shortly after the introduction of the tube mills to the Nipissing Mine's mill in 1914, the idea of using rubber as a mill liner material was spawned. However, no action was taken due to the advent of World War I. It is interesting to note that the idea of rubber mill liners emanated from having used pieces of solid rubber tire as an emergency repair on a set of liners when a liner had broken and no immediately available spare was on site.The credit for this ingenuity and subsequent application for a patent on rubber mill liners falls to James John Denny, the mill superintendent, and Rolla Barnum Watson, the general manager of Coniagas Mines Limited. The patent application was formally made on December 3, 1921. The U.S. Patent Office issued Patent No. 1,470,597 on October 16, 1923."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"

"Simulation of rare earth element solvent extraction processes for plant design and optimization is complex, requires extensive bench scale and pilot scale testing, and is traditionally performed using proprietary algorithms. The complexity of simulation is mainly due to traditional simulation software solvent extraction modules not being designed to simulate rare earth separation processes because of the interaction between each element. This paper presents an alternative method for designing and optimizing rare earth element solvent extraction separation processes using METSIM to converge each stage of the battery individually until the full battery reached ultimate convergence. A feed-forward controller is used to control the organic to aqueous flow ratio feeding the solvent extraction modules. This method minimizes the complexity of simulating such processes by using inexpensive batch solvent extraction data, and allowing for rapid theoretical optimization, by varying the process configuration and parameters from a graphic interface instead of the traditional code-based interface of most proprietary models. Comparison of the model predictions to pilot plant data reveals that the method can be used to accurately model rare earth solvent extraction processes, as illustrated by its application in the development of Rare Element Resources innovative process.INTRODUCTIONThe Rare Earth Elements (REEs) consist of 16 metals, specifically the 15 lanthanide elements and yttrium, which is typically found in the same mineral deposits as the lanthanides. Scandium can be associated with the rare earth elements, but is usually only present in trace amounts, and therefore omitted. The term “rare earths” originates from an old term used to designate minerals (earths) and their believed scarcity upon their initial discovery. The rare earths designation is now considered a misnomer because it was demonstrated that the crustal abundance of some rare earth elements, such as cerium, is known to be higher than many common metals, such as copper. However, enriched deposits are fairly uncommon compared to other similarly abundant metals. The REEs are typically divided into groups commonly consisting of light rare earths (LREEs), medium rare earths (MREE), and heavy rare earths (HREEs). Light rare earth elements include lanthanum to neodymium, medium rare earths include samarium to gadolinium and the heavy rare earth elements include terbium to lutetium, and yttrium. The REEs exhibit similar chemical characteristics and are usually extracted from the ore and processed into a mixed rare earth concentrate. The rare earth concentrate requires further processing in order to separate the REEs from each other and produce a series of single element products."

"The Bidgood is a small gold mine about 5 miles east of the main Kirkland Lake camp. Since the beginning of production in 1934, gold having a value of $5,000,000 has been produced from the property. Practically all of this production has come from seven veins in a diorite stock that intrudes the Timiskaming sediments and lavas of the area. The veins consist of quartz, pyrite, and molybdenite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, calcite, and tellurides, and occupy northeast striking and northwest dipping thrust fault fractures. They have no apparent direct structural association with the faults of the main Kirkland Lake camp or the Larder Lake 'break' to the south; however, the veins closely resemble the former in their mineralogical composition and in their close association with syenite intrusives.ROCK TYPES AND THEIR STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICSThe dominant and, from an economic standpoint, most important rocks in the ore area consist of two separate families of Algoman intrusivesa diorite and a later syenite group."

Important resources of kaolin, refractory clay and lignite, not found elsewhere in Ontario, occur with quartz sand of glassgrade quality in unconsolidated Mesozoic sediments of the Moose River Basin in northeastern Ontario. These materials comprise the Mattagami Formation of Lower Cretaceous age, which overlie in some places a thin Jurassic unit and a thick Paleozoic section, and underlie as much as JOO m or more of glacial and marine sediments and a uniform capping of muskeg. The Mallagami Formation is known from deep boreholes to exceed 100 m in thickness and to consist of two phases: an earlier Type A unit of dark-coloured carbonaceous clays and lignite, and a later light-coloured (Type B) unit of kaolin-bearing quartz sands and bright-coloured refractory clays. Remoteness, poor access, and difficult physical environment have inhibited the exploration and development of these resources.

"The valleys of the Dordogne and the Vézère (France) have been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the famous site of Lascaux. A few miles away, the village of La Roque-Gageac is also a very popular tourist destination (about 1.5 million tourists per year): The village is sandwiched between a massive limestone cliff and the Dordogne river. The collapse of a cave roof high above the village in January 2010 led us to characterize instability together for the cave and the whole cliff and propose a adapted instrumentation to monitor the fracture openings in the rock mass that are linked to climatic variations. Measurements have been going on and been recorded for nearly 4 years. They point out the role of thermal stress fatigue in the breakdown of the rock mass. In this paper we describe the site under study, the instrumentation and its main results. INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of thermal fatigue has been very little studied as far as rocks are concerned, whereas it is rather well characterized for other types of materials: Elsevier published a journal dedicated to fatigue (International Journal of fatigue). In the case of rocks, thermal phenomena and their impacts on mechanical behavior have been analyzed from a micro-structural point of view, and it is now well-known that an increase in temperature causes a dilatation of crystals (Arnould et al., 2004; Berest & Weber, 1998). This dilatation may lead to the development of inter-granular traction and compression stresses, and if those stresses are greater than fracture strength, inter-granular and intra-granular cracks may take place. On the other hand, the fatigue phenomenon (cyclic repetition of a temperature variation which is less extreme than the one that may lead to this inter-granular or intra-granular fracture) is a phenomenon which has not been much studied.The principal studies on thermal fatigue on rocks come mainly from the field of geomorphology, particularly in connection with the analysis of the evolutions of past climate that can explain the present shapes of those landforms: those studies remained essentially qualitative and not quantitative. Le Ber & Oter Duthoit (1987) proposed a thermal and thermodynamic approach to analyse the disaggregation of rock masses. This analysis is dedicated to the study of paleoclimates and was implemented to better understand the formation of slope deposits in order to propose transfer models permitting the reconstruction of the climactic conditions contemporary to their appearance. Since deterioration in the cliff only appears after several cycles, it means that it is a gradual and irreversible deterioration which leads to an increase of the « disorder ». Seen from a macroscopic system point of view, this irreversible evolution is quantified by the internal creation of entropy."

The control of feed delivery quality to the flash furnace remains an unsolved problem. Many operations around the world still have limited control of feed quality to their flash furnace. Schenck Process and WorleyParsons continue to work towards the ‘holy grail’ of simple quality feed delivering both radial feed distribution and pulseless feed delivery. Ten years ago they joined forces to offer a system based on then Clyde Process RotoFeed system which could deliver ground level installation, online mixing of materials, pulseless feeding direct to the burner, with good radial distribution. Unfortunately, this proved to be too large a step for the Flash Smelting community and met with resistance from the process owners. Since then the community has developed a range of options some of which have been implemented over this period. Despite these improvements there are still areas of concern including safety issues associated with concentrate leaks and spills, uncontrolled variations in feed rate including massive flooding events, intermittent distribution improvement and set up of the burner continues to be trial and error and hard to repeat the success in each burner campaign. These continue to impact flash furnace performance globally on a daily basis. Following the community reticence to pursue the complete solution a number of interim steps are now available to pave the way to the ultimate feed system. The mixing of material has been installed and is delivering line blended materials on a daily basis. This paper will investigate the developments over the last 10 years and discuss the pros and cons of this incremental step process for overall furnace control. INTRODUCTION Schenck Process and WorleyParsons have continued to interact and observe changes in the flash smelting industry and to consider application of the Clyde RotoFeed now incorporated in the Schenck Process ProStreamTM range for delivery of feed directly to the concentrate or matte burner. Schenck Process pneumatic injection from the Clyde Process range, ProStreamTM, utilises two types of volumetric feeders to accurately control the feed of material into an injection pipeline. These are referred to as the RotoFeed and RotoScrew technologies and the choice of feeder type is dependent on the characteristics of the material to be handled. The RotoFeed is generally used for finer, granular and powdered materials which cannot be accurately handled with a screw such as pulverised coal and copper concentrate, whilst the RotoScrew is particularly suited to coarser lump materials, particularly abrasive of cohesive materials like zinc powder, electronic scrap and metal ashes. Both units can operate at high pressures and many systems work at 3 to 10 bar with the occasional system working at 20 or 30bar for carbon to gasifiers. For the Flash furnace the ProStreamTM units can be used to deliver each of the furnace feed materials into a single line, mixing the materials homogeneously and live to the burner.

Considerable progress has been made in studying the mechanism and effectiveness of using ultrasound waves to manipulate alloy solidification microstructure, However, uncertainties remain in both the underlying physics of how microstructure evolve under ultrasonic waves, and the best technological approach to control the final microstructure and properties. We used the ultrafast synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging facility housed at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, USA to study in-situ the highly transient and dynamic interactions between the liquid metal and ultrasonic waves/bubbles. The dynamics of ultrasonic bubbles in liquid metal and their interactions with the solidifying phases were captured in-situ for the first time. The experiments were complemented by the simulations of the acoustic pressure field, the pulsing of the bubbles and the associated forces acting onto the solidifying phases, providing more quantitative understanding for using ultrasound to control the growth of dendritic grains and to enhance grain multiplication effects for grain refinement.

"Tires, although not always the largest single cost item in open-pit mining operations, will place in the top three, along with explosives and fuel. How this high-cost supply is controlled is dependent upon on an efficient tire program. The success of this program is, in turn, dependent upon the people who are directly associated with tires and their use, namely: the mine's tire personnel, the tire sales representatives and a technician for the rubber company. The technician will relay his observations and information received from the mine personnel back to the manufacturer with recommendations to overcome current problems .Haulage truck tire life and costs in a hard rock open-pit mine are governed and controlled by four important factors:I) Field control.2) Operating within manufacturer's guidelines.3) Different tire purchasing methods.4) Scrap piles.Field ControlPerhaps the most influential people involved in this program are those who live with the tire through every hour of its lifespan: the truck driver, the shovel operator, the dozer operator, the grader operator and the shift boss. Of these, the truck driver has the most control, in that he can drive over or around rock s as these situations arise. The loading area, the edge of the haul road and the dump account for most of the tire injuries.This is why shovel, dozer and grader operators must appreciate their influence on haulage tire life. Spillage cleanup must be ongoing and is not being done adequately if any of these operators are idle. The shift boss that drives by a rock on the road without removing it or calling for a cleanup has little recourse with the truck driver who runs over it-he has sanctioned the driver's actions by his own neglect."

"The aluminium alloy 2618A is an Al-Cu-Mg alloy with additions of Fe and Ni, which is designed for long-term operation at elevated temperature in transportation and aerospace industries. The alloy degrades due to coarsening and dissolution of GPB zones and coarsening of S-Phase precipitates (Al2CuMg). This work investigates the overageing process at the application relevant temperatures of 190 °C for durations ranging up to 25,000 h. The nm-sized precipitates were selectively imaged along the <001>a direction of the Al matrix using dark-field transmission electron microscopy. The resulting images were then evaluated and allow the statistically relevant determination of radii distributions and the average radius of the precipitates dependent on temperature and heat treatment duration. Ostwald ripening of the S-phase does not describe the ageing process adequately. Instead, the evolution of GPB zones during the initial ageing regime needs to be considered in addition to the coarsening process of the S-phase. DSC measurements were performed to determine the presence of GPB zones in different ageing states. This will allow a quantitative description of the ageing process and a comparison to samples aged under external load.INTRODUCTION Alloy 2618A is an Al-Cu-Mg alloy, which is part of the 2XXX series of aluminium alloys. It is used in aerospace and transportation industry due to its desirable material properties for long term operation at elevated temperatures (Polmear, 2006). Fe and Ni are added to form intermetallic compounds, which retain microstructural stability at elevated temperatures (Bergsma, Li, & Kassner, 1996; Elgallad, Shen, Zhang, & Chen, 2014; Oguocha, Yannacopoulos, & Jin, 1996; Wang & Yi, 2006). The size and distribution of the nm-sized S-phase formed from the supersaturated solid solution (SSSS) during heat treatments mainly controls the strength (Khan, Starink, & Yan, 2008; Liu, Zhang, Ding, Sun, & Chen, 2003; Parel, Wang, & Starink, 2010; Shih, Ho, & Huang, 1996; Wang, Starink, & Gao, 2006). The S-phase has the composition Al2CuMg and is orthorhombic under equilibrium conditions (Heying, Hoffmann, & Pottgen, 2005; Perlitz & Westgren, 1943). We present research on cable fault location methods for mines where coal dust and methane explosions are a frequent potential hazard. The methodology and devices for low- and medium voltage cables fault location are well known and applied in classical power distribution networks. They are based on solutions for underground mines with a high risk of explosion. The lack of a safe solution for the location of a fault has contributed to the initiation of a research project by a group of Polish companies. The consortium consists of research institutes (Institute of Innovative Technologies EMAG, Tele and Radio Research Institute, Central Mining Institute GIG-KD ?Barbara?), Silesian University of Technology and a private entrepreneur MARTECH PLUS. Fast and exact determination of fault location is one of the important factors for minimizing power outage time. The lack of technical solutions to obtain measurements in a secure way leads to the use of the methods connected with a high risk of explosion. For example, the application of high energy can lead to arc discharge where there is a fault in insulation, creating the risk of an explosion. Measurements of methane concentration along the analyzed section of the cable reduce the risk; however the shock wave generated by the electric arc may raise coal dust and make an explosive mixture, which is an object of ignition. Low energy methods, like those based on reflection waves, have low sensitivity for high- and medium-resistance faults. This technique has difficulties in joints, which create false echoes. The fundamental problem is to determine the topology of the network using a reflectogram and find anomalies of a different nature ? not only open and short circuit. Included in the scope of the project is an analysis of Polish legal regulations related to fault location and operational work for low- and medium-voltage networks. Two of the methods used on the surface were selected as feasible to implement under explosion hazard conditions. In the process of development of the fault location methodology, installation features characteristic of underground mines were used, namely access to the whole length of a cable. This is the attribute that provides an opportunity to do measurements that are usually not possible for typical surface power nets. To carry out laboratory tests, a dedicated measuring stand with various types of cables was built. The authors describe the principle of operation of the fault locator and the results of the laboratory tests carried out on the cables with built-in damage (prepared for tests). Results of the work will be the basis for the next stage of the project associated with operational analyses of the prototype.
