The paper reviews recent valuations of mineral properties, many of which are at an early stage of exploration. The various methods used are outlined. The problem of comparing, in terms of whether it is fair and reasonable, a highly subjective opinion of the present value of a portfolio of exploration tenements with a vendor consideration, the real value of which, in most cases, lies at some indeterminate time in the future because of the application by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) of escrow conditions, is highlighted. Examples are given of some of the questionable logic used by consultants in handling this difficult issue. A proposal for revision to current flotation and listing practice which, the author believes, would circumvent the problem and at the same time provide better protection for the investing public is offered for Consideration.

With the long lead time requirement for engineering and construction of mineral pro- cessing facilities and the costly financing arrangements necessary, effective project management is essential to the successful and timely start up of these major production units. An added complexity is the frequently remote location of such projects and the demands this imposes on efficient project staffing, scheduling, logistics and cost control. Parsons recent experience with major projects such as Greenvale in Queensland and La Caridad in the desert of Northern Mexico and at remote locations like Sar Cheshmeh in Iran are described. The applications being developed for improving project controls through the use of computer techniques such as MSCS-COPES, and readily accessible and versatile transportation means are reviewed.

Geology is generally treated as a æfront endÆ step in mine development. After infill drilling, the majority of resource estimation, mine-planning, development, mineral processing strategies and operational procedures are planned and implemented with little geological input, particularly in open pit operations. However, significant benefits in overall costs, cash flow, and technical risk reduction can be realised when sound geology is utilised more rigorously throughout the mining process. This under-utilisation of geology in the mining process has arisen due to a combination of factors:A lack of interest in, or knowledge of the full mining process by geologists. Few geologists fully understand where their inputs make critical impacts on downstream users. As a result of this, geologists generally do not focus their inputs towards areas of greatest value added, ie addressing issues critical for other members of the mining team. Most importantly, few geologists effectively communicate their results to the downstream users of their geology models. The results are that the potential benefits of geology, and the appropriate status of geology in the mining industry, are not fully realised. It is fundamental to realise exactly what geologists do. Geologists constrain geological processes and geometry. All geoscientific tools at the geologistsÆ disposal are geared towards one of these goals. An emphasis on geological processes is present throughout the exploration process, whereas in the resource estimation and mine development process an emphasis on geometry is required. The mining process is a web of disciplines that are attempting to optimise development of a resource to provide value to shareholders. Yet few people within these disciplines have a full appreciation of this web, and where sound geology inputs can add value through various feedback loops. Geology inputs do not end at the resource estimation stage, nor are they relegated to grade control implementation. If geologists have an appreciation of the mining process and close liaison with the other disciplines such as geostatistics, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, and mining engineering, they can significantly benefit project costs, timelines, and constrain technical risk by addressing their issues at the earliest possible stage. Furthermore, the mining process is not a single pass timeline, but an iterative process where the exploration, resource definition, mine planning and mining loop is continually repeated over the life of a project. Therefore, the potential inputs of geology are critical throughout the mining process. Effective communication of the impacts of geology inputs on downstream users is often lacking on mining projects. The most effective way to communicate geological results is through where it impacts most û project risk. Focussing all geology inputs and communication in terms of potential material risk allows the geologist to be more effective in contributing value to the mining process, and allows the downstream users of geology inputs to better constrain the risks associated with their aspects of the mining project. Through a program of geologists:taking an interest in the entire mining process and identifying critical areas for geology inputs to downstream users (the geologistsÆ clients); focussing geology inputs to address the potentially material issues on mining projects; and communicating their inputs to the æclientsÆ in terms of technical risk, geology will be much better integrated into the mining process. As a result, the potential benefits of geology throughout the mining process will be realised, and the status of geologists within the mining process will be elevated to a more pivotal position.

The mine manager is one of the oldest jobs in the world. Over many centuries the fundamentals of how this job was approached did not change much. However since the later part of the 1980s there has been a dramatic shift in the expectations and role of the mine manager as the pressures of globalisation and consolidation have increased the size of companies and the production levels of mining operations. The changes have been dramatic, with demanding requirements on mine managers to continually improve the skill levels of people, to apply and develop rapidly changing technologies and to consider far broader business issues that need to be managed in a truly globally connected world. This paper will attempt to outline some of the issues, the complexity surrounding them and some of the approaches that have been made to manage them. There is not a single correct answer or approach, but there are many key success factors that have led to some amazing levels of performance being achieved as we go deeper, broader and literally move mountains to meet the customerÆs needs for today and tomorrow. This contrasts with many mining operations in developing countries that still have a traditional approach to how they mine. Society is the river of life that continually flows and changes the environment that surrounds it. The pressures from the customers and world growth, shape and force alterations to be made in an industry that has to live with the far greater primal and uncompromising forces of the earth we mine. This has led to some paradigm shifts in how we accept what we manage. TodayÆs mine manager must manage a far broader range of issues, than just how do we get tonnage out of the mine and product out of the ore. These include but are not limited to technical, commercial, product quality and end use understanding, employee and community issues, environmental and the ever increasing complexities of sustainable development. Organisations will have to look at how they structure their management of the business to manage functions to meet the complexity of different stakeholders needs û the business, the employees, the customer and the broader community within an environment that is becoming more attuned to the harm impacts to the world in which we operate. The attraction and retention of skilled people that contribute to the value and worth of the corporation, will become critical to sustain a companyÆs growth. One of the fundamental elements of successfully doing this will always be the skills of the mine manager and his/her extended team with the continued development and support that they will need to meet these demands.

The Portia Au and North Portia Cu-Au-Mo prospects are located on a magnetic structure called the Benagerie Ridge Magnetic Complex, comprising varying pyrite-bearing Proterozoic albitite, phyllite and carbonaceous phyllite. The prospects are covered by up to 75 m of Cainozoic sediments, which comprise from top down, surface soils, Quaternary sediments, the Miocene Namba Formation and the (Late-Oligocene?) Portia Unit.The Portia Unit is dominantly clay-rich with local sand-rich base and it fills palaeo-topographic lows and a palaeo-valley that incised into the weathered basement rock (saprolite). This sedimentary unit hosts the majority of the Au grains found at Portia, with additional Au grains also present in the underlying saprolite. The North Portia prospect comprises saprolite hosted Cu-Au-Mo, with elevated concentrations of As-Pb-V present in the northern part of the prospect. These two groups of elements are delineated using factor analysis, and are regarded as the pathfinder elements for the North Portia mineralisation.Secondary Cu minerals including covellite and native Cu are present in the lower saprolite, and are stable under reducing conditions in the saturated zone.In the upper saprolite (unsaturated), Cu, Au, As, Mo and Pb are associated with Fe-oxides, mainly goethite and hematite. Saprolite leached of Fe generally contains low pathfinder elements concentrations.

It is well known that in most areas of Central Europe it is not difficult to find water - usually at shallow depths - and to recover and use this water. What is much more difficult, however, is to find water sources that offer both sufficient in quantity and qual- ity. Far too often, there are sources that offer abundant quantities but of poor quality or vice versa, i.e. high quality water but insufficient volumes. In the former case where water quality is not adequate - which is more often than not due to anthropogenic factors and only very rarely a result of geogenic effects - the application of treatment techniques can help to turn such water into potable water that is suitable for human con sumption.

The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

Exploration requires a lot of skill, technical knowhow, and money; the money is usually less painfully available when provided by a profitable cash flow of an existing organisation that has income against which exploration cost is deductible. Planning the financing for development of a proven resource should begin at the earliest stages even while the mining plan is being formed up. The character of the participants has a bearing on the nature of the financing "package" and the structure that is to be selected for the venture. The security for borrowers in a remote mining resource is no better than the capacity of the participants to bring that resource to profitability in line with the findings of a thorough feasibility study. Taxation considerations related to the structure selected and the timing of the cash flow are of vital importance. Sales contracts have generally been a basic requirement of institutions financing mineral mining projects. Clauses relating to price, price escalation, and currency var- iations, are key factors in those contracts. Initial contracts have generally been required to cover initial overall costs.

A study has been made into the influence of feed size distribution on the flotation response of coal. The results show that a full description of the flotation response of a coal must not only consider the inherent floatability of the coal, but also, the size distribution of the feed to flotation. The performances of a number of flotation circuits were compared using a coal which was "poorly floating" because of its size distribution. Split feed flotation, two stage reagent addition, and reflotation of classified tailings all gave better yields than that obtained by conventional single stage flotation. The optimum flotation circuit for the washing of the coal in question, was reflotation of classified tailings.

The integration of gravity, geomagnetic, LANDSAT data and geotectonic history is used to formulate an ore deposit model which can be used in the implementation of mineral exploration programmes. Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

Excavation in underground jointed rock masses creates cavities into which the surrounding rock mass deforms. Deformations, besides intact rock deformation, include mechanistic deformations such as slip and rotation. In this paper deformational moduli were measured for prototype and blocky (jointed) models using elastic analogue methods for stopes from MIM LimitedÆs Lead Mine. The blocks for the models were defined in terms of the prototypeÆs joint sets, their spatial separations, orientations and average friction characteristics. From dimensional analyses, a relationship between prototype and model deformations was used to predict stope mid-span deformations. The results of this physical modelling work, conducted in the 1970s, motivated an investigation into the electro-treatment of tailings backfill to achieve improved strength and stiffness characteristics. Tailings backfill containing fines and having a high clay content can be electrically dewatered, and at times grouted, cemented, ion exchanged or agglutinated, to achieve relatively high magnitudes of strength and stiffness. These treated tailings stiffnesses can reduce the deformation magnitudes within a rock mass and, in doing so, reduce problems encountered in mine pillar extraction. The application of these tailings modification techniques is examined in relation to the elastic analogue methods.

The flotation circuit handling Peko ore at Peko Mines N.L. was examined in July 1970 with a view to determining simple changes in circuitry or reagents which could improve the grade and recovery of the final copper concentrates. The investigation included sampling over one shift followed by detailed testing of the samples by sizing-assays, sizing-mineralogy and sizing-liberation. Mass balances were carried out over total streams, the component minerals and the copper contents. Some laboratory work was carried out to assess the effect of salinity on flotation. In order to handle the sizing-mineralogy calculations a computer programme was set up. The raw data were corrected for locking factors, then mineral and elemental distributions cal- culated for each screen fraction and the total sample. Calculated assays from grain counting were compared with chemical assays. Recoveries through the size-ranges re- vealed very rapid flotation of copper minerals at sizes below 350 mesh. This pointed to a possible circuit improvement by desliming rougher tailings ahead of the scavenger stage. A strong correlation was found between water in concentrates and gangue recovery for the subsieve sizes. A symbolic relationship exists between Explosives and Mining. Australia has vast mineral wealth. Our Mining Industry is of major importance to the Economy., The value of mineral produc- tion in 1987 was $25 million or 10% of GDP. Australian Mining is a business depending on international markets. The Mining Industry is our leading export earner, generating 44% of all export income. 60% of mineral production is exported. About half of these minerals are extracted using explosives. Explosives rank as one of the top three consumable expenditures for a mine. For example: A major open-cut iron or coal mine can spend $6 million dollar per annum on explosives.

Supercritical fluids (SCFs) have gained recognition as solvents for the extraction of a wide range of organic materials. Their principle advantages over conventional organic solvents are that they possess much more favourable transport properties and that such properties can be easily altered by adjusting the system temperature and/or pressure. More recently, SCF solvents have been employed in the extraction of metal ions. The direct extraction of metal ions using SCFs such as CO2 is normally not possible due to the charge neutralisation requirement for solubilisation. However, extraction can be achieved with a SCF solvent containing an organic complexing agent as a cosolvent (Laintz et al, 1992; Laintz and Tachikawa, 1994; Dehghani, 1996). The role of the SCF is therefore similar to the role of a diluent in conventional liquid-liquid or solvent extraction processes. In this regard, SC-CO2 is a particularly good diluent since it exhibits good solubility for many organic complexing agents. The extraction of metals with SCF solvents has been examined mainly in the analysis of environmental samples and the treatment of metal contaminated wastes. Nonetheless, some interesting results have been reported recently on the extraction of rare earth metals, which highlight the potential of SCF solvents in mineral processing applications (Laintz and Tachikawa, 1994; Dehghani, 1996).

The Argyle Diamond Mine came on stream late in 1985 as the world's largest diamond producer in terms of carat output. The design of the process plant, including the heavy medium separation (HMS) facility which provides the initial stages for separation of diamonds from gangue, evolved over a lengthy period of feasibility study and site investigation into the final form described in this paper. The commissioning was carefully planned and co-ordinated, and culminated successfully with handover of the plant on schedule and within budget. Three ores (sulfidic, oxidized and carbonaceous) were analyzed to determine the effects of leaching time, ore depth, and ore mineralogy on cyanide species concentration. NaCN solutions were percolated through opaque columns filled with milled ore. Column design made liquid sample collection possible from various depths at specific times. The concentrations of weak acid dissociable(WAD) and total cyanide, Fe(CN)63 , Fe(CN)64 , SCN , and Cu(CN)43 were determined for each sample. Extended percolation time led to increases in WAD cyanide concentra- tions and decreased SCN and Cu(CN)43 concentrations regardless of ore depth. WAD cyanide concentration decreased while Fe(CN)64 concentra- tion increased with ore depth. Highest concentrations of Fe(CN)64- SCN and Cu(CN)43 were found in the sulfidic ore, with expected low WAD cyanide concentrations. A novel solvent extraction process, called the SOHNEX process, has been developed at the University of Utah. In this process, the organic and the aqueous phases flow countercurrently in a horizontal vessel, and the emulsion between the two liquid phases is generated by high-velocity gas jets injected at the bottom. The gas jets are located at certain intervals along the bottom of the vessel with phase disengagement zones on either side of the plume zone created by the gas jet. The system is simple, having no mechanical moving parts or complex internal structures, and yet provides good contact between the phases with minimal backmixing. Tests have shown that emulsions with a wide range of specific interfacial area, including that typically encountered in mixer-settlers, can be generated in this process. It has significant built-in flexibility of operation including the control of the flowrate and hold-up of each liquid phase. The SOHNEX process overcomes the difficulties in the operation of conventional solvent extraction equipment such as mixer-settlers and column extractors. A major advantage of the SOHNEX process is that the energy of mixing can be closely controlled by adjusting the strength of the gas jet. This allows an optimal control of the drop-size distribution of the dispersed phase and thus the specific interfacial area. The process is continuous, and any number of extraction and separation stages may be built into a single vessel. The gas can be recirculated in a closed loop, thus eliminating solvent loss and mist problems, especially for high-temperature operations. The SOHNEX problem can handle solutions that contain suspended solids and that form third phases. The simplicity of the equipment and operation with low maintenance will mean much reduced capital and operating costs as well as low environmental risks and improved safety. The SOHNEX process has been tested for continuous copper extraction from a dilute solution. Calculations also showed that uranium and other radioactive elements can readily be extracted in a small unit of the SOHNEX extractor while satisfying the nuclear criticality condition.

Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.
