"Developed by CRIRSCO, IRT is a document that draws on the best of the CRIRSCO-style reporting standards. These reporting standards are recognised and adopted world-wide for market-related reporting and financial investment.The IRT is not an international reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. Rather it is a guideline that encapsulates the content of these standards for the benefit of the international mining industry and its various stakeholders.The template is a 'living document' that is continuously updated and improved as new national laws, rules, codes and guidelines are created or amended.The International Template is advisory only and where national codes already exist, these will take precedence. WE assemble again today in this comfortable, hospitable Inn to begin this, the 58th, Meeting of our Society. It is just a year ago when last we met but that year was, probably, the most portentious year in the whole history of mankind. In that year, the German 'Atlantic Wall' was broached, the Rhine was crossed, and Germany, as a Nation, has ceased to be. The agony of Europe is over; convalescence may be, probably will be, slow. But blood no longer flows in Europe. Time will heal the sores, cover the scars, regenerate the industries, rebuild the cities, and re-establish the people. True, the war of all wars is not yet over. True, a bloody conflict remains . But, the power of the United Nations now converges on one target. The rain of blood will be heavy. We can hope the storm will be short. The sun is on the horizon. The light of peace 1s in the sky. What of that Peace? Are we ready for it? Have we a 'sure foundation ' for our future world? Are the footings under that foundation broad and substantial? Can we look forward with confidence to a lasting peace and a fruitful life? The United Nations, even as this is being written, are in conference in San Francisco, placing the footings, rearing the foundations for a world edifice. There are bickerings; there are jealousies. The world is tired, and a tired family always squabbles. We can, we must, believe that the decisions they make, the edifices they rear, will be better than anything we each could effect separately. It will be a compromise, probably; it will carry things that will hurt us, just as it will carry things that will hurt others. We can, we must, believe that the good of the whole is a greater good than the good of the part. Each Nation within the United Nations must sacrifice something, each part of each Nation must sacrifice something, each individual within each part of each nation must contribute something, if the whole is to be wholesome. Sacrifice and contribution must be the order of the day if the New World we are about to build is to be worth while. What of Nova Scotia? The world has travelled far in the last year; how far has Nova Scotia gone? Canada has preparations for the Peace under way; what has Nova Scotia done? Is Nova Scotia preparing counter measures for the sacrifices it must make? Is each of us ready to contribute his share?

"This paper outlines the implementation of the Mechanic's Stethoscope from the earliest stages of development to the implementation at Brunswick Mining and Smelting. It details the cooperative efforts of personnel at Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) and Brunswick Mining & Smelting (BMS) during the technology transfer of the Mechanic's Stethoscope. It demonstrates how everyone worked toward a goal of developing a product that is accepted as a useful addition to the work environment.The Mechanic's Stethoscope is an underground vehicle diagnostic system consisting of computer hardware and software intended to assist mechanics in daily tasks. Its tools facilitate quick and easy access to any information required during the maintenance of an underground vehicle. Each tool presents vehicle condition data in a simplified manner. The additional information improves the mechanics understanding of the vehicle condition. The result is a healthier fleet of vehicles and faster diagnosis times.When introducing a computer based system into a traditionally non-computer oriented environment a concern is the acceptance of the system. This concern exists on many levels."

"There are many tests that can be used to characterize and classify coals, and describe their quality. One of the easier tests, and most versatile in its application, is petrography. Rank and coal type are precisely defined by petrographic evaluation, and in this paper they are compared with other definitions of rank and coal type. Brief descriptions are given of the various rank tests, and of rheological and coking tests used to describe coking-coal quality in Canada. Similarly, tests used to evaluate thermal coal quality are discussed. Finally, the use of these tests as parameters to classify Canadian coals is examined with reference to four coal classifications.Introduction Among all coals there are two independent variables that are required to evaluate coal quality. These are, coal rank and coal type (or composition), and although coal petrography can be used to precisely define them, other methods are often used to provide values that are, in fact, functions of rank and coal type. For example, volatile matter yield is used as a proxy for rank, and free swelling index is used as a proxy for coal type in the International Classification of Hard Coals by type. Currently, there are a number of methods in use in Canada to define rank. The approach taken here, (obviously the author's bias), is that Romax, the mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite, is both a quick and an accurate measure of rank. It is logical to compare the other techniques employed in the measurement of rank to this favoured method. Coal type is, in theory at least, simply a quantitative measure of the various varieties of coal. In practice, the microscopic entities are assigned to a Reactive or Inert category, and at that point objectivity fades from petrography. Despite this somewhat subjective approach, petrographic composition of coals remains an independent variable of such.importance that its place in the evaluation of coal is essential. In this paper, a variety of me.thods that are used to assess rank and coal type are reviewed and compared; the influence of these variables over other parameters that are used to determine the quality of metallurgical and thermal coals is examined, and their usefulness in coal classifications is discussed."

"Vale has been actively evaluating new technologies to curtail diesel emissions. This paper discusses the selection, installation, operation, and evaluation of the MANN+HUMMEL SMF®-AR diesel particulate filter system to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions in underground mines. The system uses a sintered metal filter element, an iron fuel-borne catalyst with an onboard dosing system, an electric heater that uses onboard power, and a sensor-based control unit. More than 6,000 h of testing demonstrated that the system represents a breakthrough in the successful control of soot emission from light-duty vehicles with differing soot emission levels, exhaust temperatures, and duty cycles.RÉSUMÉ La compagnie Vale évalue activement de nouvelles technologies pour réduire les émissions de diesel. Le présent article discute du choix, de l’installation, du fonctionnement et de l’évaluation du système MANN+HUMMEL SMFMD-AR de filtrage des particules de diesel pour réduire les émissions de particules de diesel dans les mines souterraines. "In response to mine head grades declining and orebodies becoming more complex, Glencore Technology has developed an alternative method for recovering economic minerals once leached into solution, rather than relying on conventional flowsheet options. The method involves the precipitation and separation of base metals from solution with limestone or lime. The final grade of these precipitate is not usually high enough to attract favourable terms of sale due to dilution from gypsum and sulphate salts. A set of operating conditions have been developed to allow the separation of the base metal precipitate from gypsum by exploiting the difference in particle size. A high-grade oxide product can be easily separated from the gypsum stream at very low cost. This process was originally developed by Glencore for zinc and copper systems. This paper reports on the successful application to nickel and cobalt, and this process has significant advantages over the incumbent precipitation process utilising magnesia.INTRODUCTION During evaluation of transitional and oxide zinc ore deposits during the 1990’s, Noranda Inc. (now Glencore) developed a sulphate based ore leach process to extract zinc into solution. For flowsheet development, conventional schemes dictated that once the zinc was dissolved in an acidified solution it was recovered by means of purification or solvent extraction followed by electrowinning and casting to produce zinc ingots. The deposits Noranda evaluated were high grade but had a relatively short mine life (10 years) and economic analysis showed that the projects couldn’t sustain the investment of a full zinc refinery. Compounding this problem was the lack of power supply infrastructure and the high power cost in the region. Noranda then evaluated alternative means of recovering zinc from solution. Laboratory testwork showed that a high-grade zinc precipitate (+50 wt% Zn) could be produced as an oxide, carbonate or sulphide by contacting acidified zinc sulphate solution with a number of reagents including soda ash, sodium hydroxide, and sodium hydrogen sulphide. Economic evaluation showed that the cost of the reagents are prohibitive, especially when the final product is still a metal intermediate (ZnO, ZnCO3 or ZnS). Noranda then continued to focus on fine zinc oxide precipitation for supply into the automotive tyre industry as this product would attract favourable terms of sale as a premium on Special High Grade (SHG) zinc."

It is the purpose of this paper to point out conditions as they exist in the merchandizing of coal, to compare these conditions with methods in use by competitive producers of coal substitutes, and to present briefly some suggestions which may help the individual operator to market more coal in the immediate future, while we are waiting for the scientist and research worker, who are now busy on coal betterment , to produce in a practical way the results which they now write about in such glowing terms. While it may be unnecessary to call the attention of coal operators to the present deplorable condition of the industry, it might be well to impress upon our members in other branches of mining, as well as upon the public at large, the seriousness of the situation. Emerging from the war and the period of reconstruction that followed, the coal industry found itself with too many mines and too many men for normal conditions. To make matters worse, the interruptions in deliveries caused by strikes, the unfavourable publicity caused by socialistic propaganda, and the repeated governmental investigations, made the market a fertile field for coal substitutes which were not so handicapped. These substitutes were well advertised, and were marketed in an up-to-date manner, furnishing an example from which the coal operator could well profit. Now, whether or not there is agreement as to the cause or causes of this condition, there can be no doubt that we are today face to face with the fact that the sale of coal has not kept pace with the sale and use of other commodities. Had it done so, we would ere this have been able to take care of the surplus labour and work our mines at least approximately full time.

"FROM 1850 when the annual production was around 50 million tons, coal output in Great Britain expanded rapidly to 225 million tons in 1900 and 287 million tons in 1913. However, during the First World War, countries which had previously bought large quantities of coal from Britain sought other sources of sup-ply or developed their own coal re-sources. Thus from the record figure of 73 million tons exported in 1913, Britain's coal exports declined until in 1938 they stood at 39 mil-lion tons. An important reason for this was the development of oil engines for marine propulsion. Today, nearly all the navies and mercantile shipping in the world have turned to oil engines. Sometime in the future, however, it is reasonable to expect nuclear power to replace oil.During the Second World War, coal output in Great Britain and manpower at the mines were reduced considerably and in 1.945, 175 mil-lion tons were produced by 709,000 miners. Exports were meagre, only 8.""7 million tons went to foreign consumption. During the severe winter of 1947, inland demand for coal exceeded production and exports were prohibited. Even importation of coal was required to meet inland demand. These were years when the coal industry of Great Britain made immense efforts to secure maximum output irrespective of economy. The energy needs of Great Britain appeared insatiable; but had it been possible to export, the nationalised mining industry could have made huge profits as there was a world shortage of coal. However, home needs were considered to be the priority and many overseas markets were lost. Other producers moved in and secured long-term contracts. Not only was the British export market lost, but also the nationalised industry had to sell the imported coal at the same prices as home-produced coal and suffered losses up to of:3 per ton. Bence, at a time when the National Coal Board might have ac-cumulated a reserve fund to cope with less prosperons times, it was having to spend large sums of money securing sufficient coal for inland consumption. This was a time when intensive efforts in the mining industry, comparable with those of many industries and establishments inclusive of the armed services during the war, would have produced a greater amount of coal and have been of immense value to the country as a whole."

At the beginning of the 20 century, British Columbia produced a wide variety of quality dimension stone products for both domestic and foreign markets. The industry flourished until the 1930s when most of the producing quarries closed as a result of the Depression. During the 1990s, British Columbia experienced the resurgent North American dimensional stone production trend. The industry benefited from increased prospecting activity and from substantial new investment in processing equipment, particularly in the granite sector. These activities resulted in new quarry developments, the reopening of abandoned quarries such as on Granite and Fox Islands <www.quadrastone.com>, and a renaissance in downstream value-added activities. British Columbia has reestablished itself as an important, reliable and innovative source of high-quality stone products.

The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

The Falconbridge Matte Leach Process yields high-purity nickel chloride by selectively dissolving nickel from copper-nickel converter matte with hydrochloric acid , purifying the solution by solvent extraction and crystallizing NiCl2 4H2O by further acidifying the purified leach liquor. In the Kristiansand Matte Leach Plant, a granular oxide is produced by high-temperature hydrolysis of the nickel chloride for subsequent reduction to a high-purity granular metal product, designated NICKEL 98. This paper describes the investigation of on alternate route to processing nickel chloride in which high-quality cathode nickel is produced by electrowinning from all- chloride electrolyte. The investigation was made in a pilot circuit containing two production-size electrowinning tanks operated in conjunction with the commercial-scale leach plant.

It seems necessary, at times, that we should reconsider some of the more obscure causes that lead to explosions of gas and coal-dust in mines, in the hope that a recapitulation will keep before us that old and true saying "eternal vigilance is the price of safety". This explosion, while not extensive (resulting in only two much to be regretted deaths) enlarged our vision as to the possibility and probability of other explosions with more disastrous results. As this is only a partial report I shall have to omit many things that are generally included in describing a mine explosion. The mine was worked exclusively with electric cap-lamps -only firebosses and other officials carried safety-lamps. All shots were examined and fired by firebosses with a small hand-battery. Monobel was used exclusively for blasting, and clay for tamping. The system of haulage iri use was main-rope and winches, horses being employed for gathering. Compressed-air was the motive power for all winches and pumps, excepting the pumps at the shaft-bottom which were steam-driven. The mine was wet with practically no dust anywhere, except what was being made at the coal-face in the getting of the coal. Gas was found occasionally, generally in the brushing, especially where the brushing was carried up to a small seam, 2 to 6 feet above the main seam. The place where the explosion took place was known as Leigh&apos;s heading, which was being driven to the rise, immediately inbye of the siding (off No. 1 left, off the new slope) and was about 90 feet up from the level.

Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. "The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. The potential effect on innovations is discussed"

ABSTRACT An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of the overall study, a comprehensive description of physical and chemical characteristics of fine tailings generated by caustic and non-caustic processes was carried out. Ultimately, the influence of these fundamental properties on the compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength properties of the fine tailings was assessed. The characteristics of the fine tailings are presented in terms of index properties, mineralogy, specific surface area, water chemistry, liquid limits, particle size distribution and structure. A difference in water chemistry was concluded to be the cause of substantial differences in particle size distributions and degree of dispersion of the comparable caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The degree of dispersion was consistent with predictions for dispersed clays established by the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values for these materials. A linear variation of increasing dispersion with increasing SAR up to a SAR value of about 40 has been suggested, above which fine tailings are completely dispersed. The observed dispersed or flocculated structures (viewed using a scanning electron microscope) supported the predictions based on SAR values.

Recently constructed circuits have included multiple stages of columns in a variety of applications, from roughing to cleaning. The Miduk copper concentrator (in south-eastern Iran) is one of the unique mineral processing plants which use column flotation cells as rougher. As the bulk of final concentrate is produced by rougher columns, optimized metallurgical performance of these cells is crucial. This paper will present the study and optimization of, a froth washing system of columns. For this purpose, the cross-sectional area of orifices was increased and their orientation altered. Concentrate assay for copper and silica, in addition to bias rate were found to be the assessment criteria. Modification of the wash water system resulted in increasing the purity of rougher and final concentrate. Negative bias and short-circuiting of wash water into the concentrate launder were the main causes of improper froth zone washing in the former system.

The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

"The Nickel/Cobalt operation in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta has successfully used an oxidative ammonia leach process to refine a variety of feeds into high quality nickel and cobalt products for over 60 years. Fundamental changes to the refining process were made when the major feed was converted from nickel concentrate to cobalt rich mixed sulphides in the early 1990s. Since the early 1990s, the production capacity of the refinery has expanded to match increases in both mixed sulphides and other feeds. In addition to increasing the production capacity of the refinery, other changes have been required in order to improve the operability and reliability of the refinery as well as to deal with increasingly stringent safety and environmental requirements. This paper describes recent changes at the refinery including changes to the flow sheet, improvements in unit operations, incorporation of new feeds, management of byproducts, and control of impurities.INTRODUCTION The Cobalt Refinery Company (Corefco) plant in Fort Saskatchewan processes nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide intermediate produced at the lateritic nickel mine and high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) facility in Moa Bay, Cuba. Both operations are jointly owned and operated by Sherritt International and General Niquel of Cuba. The mixed sulphide, along with other feed materials, is processed at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery using a pressure ammonia leach-hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel and cobalt metal. This refinery was originally constructed in 1954 to treat nickel concentrate from Sherritt’s Lynn Lake mine in Manitoba. (Benson and Colvin, 1964; Boldt and Queneau, 1967; Forward, 1953; Forward and Mackiw, 1955; Kerfoot, 1989) From the mid-1970s until the early-1990s, the facility operated as an independent refinery, treating nickel-bearing feeds from around the world. The flowsheet was changed in 1992 to address the increased cobalt content of the feed. (Cordingley and Krentz, 2005; Kerfoot and Cordingley, 1997) The flowsheet was adapted further in 2009 to improve cobalt speciation in the leach process, which allows better cobalt-nickel separation. The 2009 iteration is shown in Figure 1. Three ammonia leach stages were used to ensure high recoveries of nickel and cobalt. Underflow solids from the final leach stage contained mainly iron oxides. One of the features of the leach process is the innovative recycling of ammonia. Ammonia vented from the leach process in tail gas and from atmospheric tanks is recovered and recycled into the refinery using water based scrubbers and a high pressure distillation process. Indeed, roughly 250 t NH3/d is recovered as distillate and recycled back into the process. Also, air enriched with ammonia which is vented from the later first stage autoclaves is recycled to the lead first stage autoclaves to maximize oxygen and ammonia utilization."
