R.K. Leininger, N.R. Hasenmueller, and D.D. Carr The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp. for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in southeastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retort¬ing of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimeter precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many metalliferous and coal mines throughout the world. Over 80 systems are currently being used with current operations in 17 countries. Greater than 200 rock slope collapses and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tones) have been monitored, with ?warning? precursor movements recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines. Slope Stability Hazards and Rock Slope Monitoring in Open Pit Mines Surface mining often creates excavation boundaries which are steeper than those would be created under natural processes in the same rock type. They are also undertake quite rapid stress changes during mining and are influenced by significant external forces such as blast vibrations and changes in groundwater. These conditions are likely to allow some degree of instability to develop in the pit slopes. The hazards associated with this instability of pit slopes can be extremely variable in character; ranging from small cobble sized rocks dislodging and falling from mine benches to complete collapse of entire pit walls. It is usually the position of mine geotechnical or geological staff to assess these hazards for mine operations. The assessment of hazards due to unstable slopes can be done by visual observation of precursor signs such as fracturing or rilling of loose material. A more reliable indicator of instability involves the quantitative measurement of outward movement and acceleration of material as an instability mechanism develops. There is strong evidence that small precursor movements of a rock wall occur for an extended period prior to rock slope collapse (Hoek and Bray, 1981). Development of a monitoring system, adopting acceptable slope deformation criteria coupled with warning systems and design of stabilization or risk reduction measures if appropriate has become a standard method of dealing with slope instability. Framework for Slope Hazard Management using the SSR A framework for the management of slope hazards is shown in Figure 1 (discussed in detail in Harries, 2007). Although this framework is specifically for use with the Slope Stability Radar, a similar framework could be developed for other monitoring technologies for monitoring slope deformation. An important point to consider is the sequential nature of the hazard management framework from selecting the context ? identifying hazards ? analysing hazards ? evaluating hazards ? treating hazards. [ ] Once the context of the system has been developed (for example ? to monitor for rapid bench scale collapse), the identification of hazards is the next stage in hazard management. Identification of slope hazards can be relatively straightforward due to the visual nature of the information that the SSR system produces. The areas of excessive wall deformation are highlighted in color maps of the mine slope with a co-aligned photographic image to review the actual site of interest. The responsible personnel must then analyses this data, usually reviewing the deformation style and rate, as well as the size of area that appears to be failing. This information can then be evaluated against organisation protocols (for example it may be only a small sub-bench failure that will be ?caught? by existing benches and hence can be categorized as a lower risk). Once these hazards are evaluated they can then be treated if required. Two major options are available to reduce the risk during this treatment option. We can reduce the likelihood of failure ? for example by buttressing the failure or de-pressurising of water pressures in a slope. However, the most likely plan of action is to reduce the consequence of the failure. One of the most successful opportunities to reduce the consequence of a slope failure is to ensure that no personnel or mining equipment is present at the location of a slope failure when collapse finally occurs. This has been the major benefit of the SSR system to the different mining operations around the world. Introduction The mining industry has long been associated with a high incidence of low back disorders and pain (Klein et al. 1984, Leigh and Sheetz 1989, Brinckmann et al. 1998). It is believed that the higher incidence of these injuries among miners is the result of high exposures to postural demands, heavy manual work, and exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV). Recent work has indicated that miners involved with heavy lifting (especially in restricted spaces or on uneven ground) or who have been exposed to whole-body vibration in undamped seats experience noticeable changes in their spines that are consistent with degeneration of the intervetebral discs of the spine (Brinckmann et al. 1998). As will be described shortly, there is mounting evidence that disc degeneration plays a large role in the development of low back pain, particularly chronic back pain. Until fairly recently, medical doctors generally assumed that back pain was the result of muscle strain, ligament pain, or so-called “trigger points” (Bogduk, 1997). However, research supporting these mechanisms of pain has been very scant. When subjected to scientific scrutiny, none of these mechanisms has been shown to relate to back pain in a convincing manner. On the other hand, there are three mechanisms that have been shown to be highly associated with back pain in controlled scientific studies: sacroiliac pain (present in 13% of back pain sufferers) (Maigne et al. 1996), facet joint pain (present in 15 % of back pain sufferers) (Schwarzer et al 1994), and disc disruption and degeneration (present in 39% of chronic back pain sufferers) (Moneta et al. 1994). The latter mechanism, which bears the highest relationship to back pain that has been objectively demonstrated, will be the focus of this section. Scientists now believe they have a good idea how back pain may develop in cases involving disc disruption and degeneration (Bogduk 1997). As the spine experiences loading during lifting tasks or whole body vibration, the first structure to fail is called the vertebral endplate, which is a structure that attaches the disc of the spine to the vertebral body (Figure 1). The endplate typically experiences a fracture, which the body will attempt to heal by means of scar tissue. Unfortunately, this scar tissue impedes the flow of nutrition to the disc itself (discs are dependent on nutrition from the vertebral bones), and if the supply is reduced sufficiently, the disc will start to degenerate. As this degeneration process proceeds, fissures or tears in the fibers of the disc start to develop. If any of these tears is a grade 3 fissure (Figure 2), an inflammatory response occurs in the disc, which will lead to the well-known sensation of low back pain (Peng 2006).

INTRODUCTION The Ballard Siphon was built in 1935 and consists of two 91.4 cm (36-inch) diameter wood-stave pipes. These pipes convey sewer flowsunder the Ship Canal from northwest Seattle and the Ballard Regulator to the North Interceptor and the West Point Treatment plant. The siphons were constructed using open cut construction, are now buried in the sediment on the floor of the canal, and have severely limited ability to be dewatered, inspected, or cleaned. The existing siphon is 394.7 m (1,295 feet) long from the junction structure on the southern shoreline to the regulator structure on the north. The location of the Ballard Siphon is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The area around the Ballard Siphon has become more populated and developed since the siphon was built. Additionally, the Ballard Siphon is subject to high flows that are greater than the capacity of the pipelines. This has resulted in predict-able Combined Sewer Overflows(CSO?s) whenever a large, long duration rain event occurs. The aged pipeline of uncertain viability has become a critical piece of the sewer system infrastructure. Because of the age of the pipelines and their importance, a sonar survey was completed on both barrels of the Ballard Siphon in December of 2005. The sonar images appeared to indicate crown intrusion of the wood-stave pipes, which suggested that the pipes were in imminent danger of collapse. As a result, an Emergency Declaration was executed by King County and the Ballard Siphon Replacement Project was initiated. Staheli Trenchless Consultants was retained to perform feasibility studies to deter-mine the viability of using microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for replacement of the Ballard Siphon. For the evaluations, the preferred site location was determined to be at or near the site of the existing Ballard Siphon in order to minimize the ancillary sewer work which would accompany moving to a new site. To meet flow demands and hydraulic requirements, the replacement siphon needed a mini-mum equivalent diameter of 182.9 cm (72 inches). This could be accomplished with a number of different siphon diameters and configurations including, but not limited to, three 106.7 cm (42-inch) diameter pipelines, two 152.4 cm (60-inch) pipelines, or two 91.44 cm (36-inch) pipelines and a 121.9 cm (48-inch) pipeline.

Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President&apos;s 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. Exploration record In preparing this paper, a list of world class discoveries prepared in 1983 has been updated. In both surveys, the following criteria were used in the definition of world class discoveries: • deposits that are continuously operated and consistently return a profit even in periods of low metal prices; • deposits large enough to significantly affect a medium sized corporation&apos;s profits; and • these deposits should be in the lower one-third cost per unit of metal produced for all similar deposits. Only 70 discoveries in the last 40 years qualified as world class deposits using these criteria. Unfortunately, this restricted population was too low to develop meaningful trends. The numbers were therefore enlarged to include all significant discoveries. The principal feature of a significant discovery is that its size and grade would yield more than $500 million in revenue using average metal prices for the last five years. A significant deposit should also meet some of the standards for a world class deposit. A tabulation of these deposits are shown in Table 1. The number of discoveries increased to 166 from 70 using the revised classification. The relationship between the number of discoveries per year and their location by continents was prepared from these data. Figure 1 shows the number of discoveries per year for the nonCommunist world. It also shows estimated and actual nonCommunist world exploration expenditures per year and the commodity price index. These data show that modern exploration started in the late 1940s, with the tempo picking up rapidly in the 1950s. The maximum discovery rate occurred in 1962. Thereafter, the discovery rate gradually declined to the present. This occurred despite a real increase in expenditures from about $200 million/a in 1955 (1982 constant dollars) to more than $900 million/a in 1980. Thus, these data suggest a significant decrease in the exploration success ratio (total exploration expenditures a year divided by the number of significant discoveries) in the last 20 years. As an example, $70 million was spent for each significant discovery in the early 1960s as compared with $225 million in the late 1970s (expressed in 1982 constant dollars). However, with the general declining trend of discoveries, one can perceive a more pronounced drop in 1973 and then a sudden increase in 1974, 1975, and 1976. This increase is probably related to the inflation of the 1970s that in turn created an environment for the explosion of commodity prices, as shown by the commodity price index on Fig. 1. Thereafter, the decline in discoveries resumed in 1975 until the present. Exploration performance by regions North American discoveries are shown in Fig. 2. The graph shows three pronounced high discovery peaks in 1962, 1975, and 1980-81.

M-30, Madrid’s inner ring, covers 42 sq km of the city centre where one million people reside. It was constructed in several phases during the sixties and the eighties. The design criteria applied to those phases were different and were not always homogeneous with urban roads with lighting regulation as well as speedways. These areas had a heavy concentration of access and exits and there had been made many changes on the number of traffic lanes which has caused heavy traffic congestions and high accident rates. The environmental impact and noise pollution in residential areas are also consequences of M-30. The Madrid Major took a decision at the beginning of the present legislation, based on socio economic and environmental evaluation; rebuild the M-30 with the following sustainable mobility principles: Underground transfer of a considerable portion of the main ring and some of its links replacing some parts of the surface with new green areas in order to reduce the environmental impact. Increase the traffic capacity, improving the traffic continuity and fluidity and eliminating the lighting regulation areas, which is one of the main congestion problems currently. Increase the traffic safety with clear signalling information panels and avoiding difficult maneuvering. Redesign the links with the high capacity radial highways and other connecting lanes of the city. The project is worth 3.7 billion Euros. In 2007, when the construction is completed, it is expected will save 14 million of journey hours that represent 4.5 million Euros saved in fuel consumption per annum, There will be a very significant reduction of 35,000 tons of CO2 in terms of pollution and 400 less car accidents. Those values will increase even more in the following years. The areas beside Manzanares River, running parallel to the M-30 on the western side of Madrid, will be highly enhanced. Better water quality and the recovering of the green areas existing in old times will also return for the citizen’s enjoyment. TUNNEL CROSS SECTION OF CALLE 30 SOUTH BY PASS One of the major challenges of the new Calle 30 is actually not only the related to the main road but also to the link with the A-3, with highway to Valencia. This link is currently the most congested area and has one of the highest traffic densities of Spanish roads, with more than 250,000 vehicles/day. The remodelling of this area is the principle objective of the South by-pass. The tunnel is the only answer for this by-pass as the road alignment will go among buildings. History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author&apos;s paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV&apos;s) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author&apos;s paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author&apos;s practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV&apos;s. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV&apos;s. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Introduction The mining of aggregates underground has grown steadily over the last 25 years. Growth has come in both production volume and in the importance this segment of the industry is playing in the continuing supply of construction aggregate. Underground aggregate mines will continue to grow in both number of operations and complexity, as the replacement of zoned reserves in metropolitan areas becomes crucial. This growth will result in a shortage of qualified mine managers, possibly limiting the success of these facilities. The aggregate industry will have to modify current practices in order to meet the growing demand for this specialized skill. Segment Growth Underground mining for aggregates is not a new idea. Martin Marietta has been operating underground mines since 1969, and currently operates 16 underground mines ranging in size from 250,000 tpy to 2,500,000 tpy. These mines represent less than 4% of the total number of operating locations, but contributed 9% of the annual production in 2004. Though they range in size and production capacity, the importance is evident. The 2000 United States Census revealed several trends that are of interest to the aggregate mining industry. For the period 1990-2000 the U.S. population grew by 33 million or 13%. There were nine major metropolitan areas with a population of five million or more. These nine areas accounted for 30% of the total U.S. population. More significant was the fact that the population growth in these nine metro areas was 25% of the growth for the entire country. These statistics tell us that the population is expanding in these major metropolitan areas at a staggering rate. The same thing is happening to some degree in every population center. Population growth increases the demand for local aggregate while reducing the available area to mine that aggregate. The need for an economical supply of aggregate to support community expansion is a problem that will grow as older quarries are mined out and closed. This will be an issue that communities of all sizes will have to deal with. A reliable and cost effective supply of quality aggregate is crucial to support community expansion.

This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. More importantly, large programs that once ran only on mainframes are being converted

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh&apos;s hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), a multi-unit organization, is generating 26% of India’s total power. This power is produced from its 14 coal based stations and 7 gas based stations. NTPC is entering into the business of power-distribution, power-trading, setting up of coal mines and diversification in non-conventional energy sector as well. For achieving the goal of the country “Power for All” NTPC has taken a giant stride by entering into Hydro Power generation which is also the cheapest and the cleanest renewable source of energy. In its pursuit for excellence, 800 MW Koldam Hydro Power Project is NTPC’s first venture in hydro sector. In Koldam, hydropower potential will be harnessed by constructing a 163m high earth and rock fill dam in a narrow gorge at upstream end of Bhakra reservoir. The river diversion is envisaged through two parallel, 14m finished diameter ‘horseshoe’ tunnels of length 901m and 934m at village Kian on the right bank, where the river forms a 180° loop. The diversion tunnels are designed to accommodate a flood of 6500m3/sec, taking into account the maximum probable discharge of 200 years return period. The tunnels pass through dolomite and limestone rock formations. The excavation of tunnels was done with drill and blast method. The excavation was attempted from both inlet and outlet faces. During geological investigation a rock fault was located at the outlet area. The location of the fault was such that it was passing through the edge of the Tunnel-1portal and around 30m away from the face of the Tunnel-2 portal. The quality of the rock at Inlet was also poor. To save the portals from slips, excavation of the tunnels was planned to start after the completion of the open excavation and its support system both at inlet and outlet. The tunnel excavation at inlet was envisaged by approaching the tunnels’ portal by constructing a road through 540EL bench and meeting the inlet portals on the upstream end, which would have been ready by mid2003, only after completion of the open excavation and its support system. To save time and cost, it was felt necessary to modify the planning by starting the tunnel excavation simultaneously along with open works both at inlet and outlet. The excavation at the inlet face of the tunnels started in December 2002 after rerouting the approach road to inlet portals through haulage road on the downstream and similarly Tunnel-1 at the outlet was started in the low cover area before completion of open area works. Thus the tunnel—heading excavation was started nearly 06 months early with the change of methodology.

INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. Most of the tunnel is horse-shoe shaped and unsupported, but approximately 3,000 feet is supported by timber

"Some of the weakest roof in United States coal mines is found in the Illinois Basin. Historically, the Illinois Basin has also suffered from high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries. During the past decade, however, roof fall and rock fall injury rates have fallen dramatically, and are now lower than the national average. Several technologies are responsible for the improvement. Roof screen was rarely used ten years ago, but a number of mines now use it on a regular basis to prevent rock falls and rock fall injuries. Other roof skin control fixtures and work practices have contributed as well.The reduction in roof falls is also directly attributed to enhanced intrinsic roof support. Stiffer primary bolting patterns have reduced the magnitude of roof spalling and roof sag. They have also helped create a more intact beam that is able to be suspended from longer cable bolts. Cable bolt design methodology has also contributed to this reduction in roof falls. Some early cable bolt applications were unsuccessful because they employed as few as two cable bolts per intersection. This paper describes a methodology for estimating rock loads for support design.ROOF FALL TRENDS IN THE ILLINOIS BASINAlthough the Illinois Basin has a long history of poor roof conditions and high rates of unplanned roof falls and rock fall injuries, recent data indicates a change in the trend. Roof fall rates are determined by dividing the total number of non-injury roof falls by the total number of hours worked underground. The data is considered for 200,000-man hours. While the Illinois Basin was once a coalfield experiencing roof falls at nearly twice the national average, it is now at or below the national rate. Figure 1 indicates the trend over the past 20 years. In 2008, the Illinois Basin mines experienced 5.06 roof falls every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.75 in 2018.There has also been a significant reduction in the rate of rock fall injuries in the Illinois Basin coal mines, as shown in Figure 2. In 2008 there were 1.48 rock fall injuries every 200,000-man-hours, compared to only 0.43 in 2018.ILLINOIS BASIN COAL ROOF GEOLOGYThe roof rock in the Illinois Basin has been studied in the past to understand the primary causes of roof failures (Molinda et al., 2008; Thompson, 2010; Molinda and Mark, 2010). Rusnak and Mark (2000) evaluated 10,000 laboratory strength tests from 800 rock units and concluded that for shale, siltstone, and sandstone, the strength of the Illinois Basin variety was less than half that of the same rock types in Central Appalachia (Figure 3). A study of Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) measurements in more than 200 US coal mines also found that weak roof was predominant in the Illinois Basin (Mark and Molinda, 2005)."

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country&apos;s economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world&apos;s more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary&apos;s regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency&apos;s review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary&apos;s reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court&apos;s ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. Technical issues related to subsidence regulations The subsidence regulations of June 1, 1983, consist mainly of two parts: a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; and substantive provisions establishing performance standards. Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent.
