US coal consumption reached new heights in 1985, but production was constrained by excess consumer inventories. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 742 Mt (818 million st) during the year. This is a 3.4% gain over the previous consumption high 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. An additional 84 Mt (92.7 million st) of US coal were shipped abroad in 1985, up 13.7% from exports a year earlier. Coal production in 1985 totaled 804 Mt (886 million st), 1.1% below the record 813 Mt (896 million st) produced in 1984. The slight decline in coal output is attributed primarily to a 13% drawdown of large consumer stockpiles built up in 1984 in anticipation of a miners strike that never occurred. Coal demand, and hence production, were also restrained by slower economic growth in 1985 and additional gains in nuclear generation of electricity. Domestic market requirements for coal in 1985 were mixed. Electric utility consumption rose 4.4%; coke plants consumed 6.7% less coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 2.1% and consumption in the residential and commercial sector fell 14.8%. The 2.2% increase in electric power generation in 1985 resulted in a 4.4% rise in utility coal consumption, totaling 630 Mt (694 million st) for the year. Twenty-nine of 45 states where coal-fired electric power plants were operating shared in the 26.7 Mt (29.5 million st) increase in 1985. Coal receipts at utilities fell by 16 Mt (18 million st) as these facilities worked off 21 Mt (23.4 million st) from stockpiles during the year. Electricity generation at coal-fired power plants similarly climbed 4.4% to 1.4 trillion kWh in 1985. This gave coal a 56.8% share of electricity generated from all energy sources compared with 55.5% in 1984. The average price of coal delivered to these facilities remained essentially unchanged during the year. It declined on 1.5% from $38.26/t ($34.71 per st) during the fourth quarter of 1984 to $37.70/t ($34.20 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1985. Coal consumption at coke plants continue to reflect a depressed steel industry. After rebounding 18.9% in 1984 for the first time in five years, coal consumption at coke plants again declined 6.7% to 37 Mt (41.1 million st) in 1985. Coke consumption 26.5 Mt (29.3 million st) exceeded production, 26 Mt (28.7 million st), in 1985. This resulted in a 1-Mt (1.2-million st) decline in coke stocks at producer and distributor levels during the year. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants decreased 7.6% from $64.30/t ($58.34 per st) during the final quarter of 1984 to $59.42/t (53.91 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal consumption in other industries, including all manufacturing and industrial consumers except coke plants, totaled 68.3 Mt (75.3 million st) in 1985. This was the highest level attained in more than a decade. But the lower percentage rise last year (2.1% compared to 11.8% in 1984) reflected slower growth in the nation's economy in 1985. The average price of coal delivered to industrial firms declined 4.5% from $42.32/t ($38.39 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1984 to $40.39/t ($36.65 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal-producing states in Appalachia mined 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) tons less in 1985 than in 1984 for a 2.4% loss. The largest contributors to the region's production decrease to 393 Mt (433 million st) were Pennsylvania, down 14.7% to 60 Mt (66 million st); Ohio, down 8.3% to 32.6 Mt (36 million st); and West Virginia, down 2.9% to 115 Mt (127 million st). Conversely, eastern Kentucky production was up 4.8% to 111 Mt (122.8 million st) in 1985, while production in Tennessee climbed 9.7% to 40 Mt (44 million st). No coal was mined in Georgia last year. Coal production in the interior region in 1985 declined 3.9% to 173 Mt (190.4 million st). Substantial production losses occurred in Indiana, down 8% to 31 Mt (34.5 million st); and in western Kentucky, down 7.9% to 36 Mt (40 million st). Coal production in Texas rose 5.7% to 39 Mt (43.5 million st) in 1985. Louisiana began mining lignite 140 kt (151,000 st) during the year. Production in the western region increased 3.4% to 238 Mt (262.5 million st) in 1985. Wyoming, up 5.3% to 125 Mt (140 million st); and North Dakota, up 16.5% to 23.5 Mt (26 million st) contributing the largest amounts. Production gains were also shown in Washington, Utah and, notably, in Alaska where coal output climbed 72.9% to 1.3 Mt (1.5 million st) in 1985. Most of the additional coal produced in Alaska last year was shipped abroad. Coal stocks held by consumers totaled 154 Mt (170 million st) at the end of the year. This was 27 Mt (30 million st), or 13.7% below the inventory level at the end of 1984. Stocks held by producers and distributors declined by 868 kt (957,000 st), or 2.8% in 1985 to 30 Mt (33 million st). A drawdown in stockpiles occurred in each consumer sector during 1985. Stocks held by electric utilities totaled 142 Mt (156 million st) at the year's end, 13% lower than stock levels at the end of 1984.

Introduction Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp.'s largest precious metals property is located in the historic Rochester Mining District 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Lovelock, NV. The property encountered cold weather operational problems soon after its fall start-up in 1986 due to its elevation of over 1830 m (6000 ft). The problem of ice buildup on the heaps because of sprayed solution application was faced immediately. It was felt that allowing ice to build up all winter long until a spring thaw was impractical due to the large area under leach. Further, the operating cost and delivery schedule for a solution heating system was unacceptable. The development and installation of a leach solution distribution system using drip emitters made efficient, cost-effective winter operation possible. Other benefits of this system have also been observed and are discussed here. General process description 15,422 kt/day (17,000 stpd) of - 1.27-cm (-1 /2-in) crushed ore from the three-stage crushing plant are delivered to the leach pad using 77.1 t (85 st) rear dump haul trucks. The ore is drifted into place with a D-9 bulldozer. Leach panels are contiguous and are approximately 8861 m'(90,000 square ft) in area built in 6-m (20-ft) lifts. New panels are built on top of older areas to a final height of 61 m (200 ft). Each panel is ripped and cross-ripped prior to leaching. Barren solution is distributed to the heap using drip emitters at rates of 0.02 to 0.41 L/min/m2 (0.0005 to 0.01 gpm per sq ft), depending on the age of the panels. The pH of the leach solution is 10.7 with a cyanide concentration of 0.75 kg/t (1.5 lb per st). Approximately 50% of the silver and 80% of the gold are finally recovered. Pregnant solution percolates though the heap and flows by gravity into one of two 9.46 ML (2.5 million gal) pregnant solution ponds. The solution is then pumped to a conventional Merrill-Crowe process plant. Clarification takes place in three 9464 L/min (2,500 gpm) capacity filters. The solution is then pumped to a packed vacuum deareation tower for the removal of dissolved oxygen. Typical deareated solution contains 0.7 parts per million dissolved oxygen. Precipitation of gold and silver is accomplished by adding a zinc dust slurry to the deareated solution at the suction of the filter press feed pump. Precipitated gold and silver are recovered in three recessed plate and frame filter presses. Barren solution is discharged into a 11.7 ML (3.1 million gal) pond where cyanide makeup occurs. This solution is pumped back to the heap for further leaching. The precipitate filter cake, containing approximately 75% dore (Ag + Au), is then fluxed with anhydrous borax, soda ash, sodium nitrate and fluorspar to yield a neutral, bisilicate slag. The fluxed precipitate is then charged into a propane-fired melting furnace and heated to 1150° C (2100° F) for 3 1/2 hours. Slag and dore bullion are poured into conical cast iron pots yielding buttons of 800 to 1000 troy oz. The dore typically contains 98.5% silver and 1 % gold. Slag is crushed and tabled to recover the trapped dore blebs and beads. Concentrate from the table is returned to the furnace. Table tails are sent to the crushing circuit and out to the leach pad. Solution application The area kept under leach at Rochester is approximately 130 000 m2 (1.4 million sq ft). Barren solution is delivered to the pad at 21.2 kL/min (5600 gpm) for a resultant application rate of 0.16 L/min/m2 (0.004 gpm per sq ft). A traditional solution sprinkling system using No. 12 Senninger Wobblers with individual pressure regulators was installed at the onset of leaching activities. The Wobblers were placed at 9.1-m (30¬ft) staggered centers and were fed off of a gridwork of Yellowmine plastic piping. Solution flow rates were moni¬tored to each panel. The onset of cold weather with an average nighttime temperature of -12° C (10° F) made it apparent that continual operation would not be possible with the sprinklers. A significant amount of ice was built up on top of the heap, making maintenance and pipe removal dangerous, if not impossible. Leach solution application was restricted to daylight hours to inhibit ice formation. Process plant flow rates were reduced to maintain steady-state operating conditions. However, as daylight temperatures dropped below freezing, ice continued to accumulate due to the sprays. Besides the obvious operating hazards brought on by the growing icefield, there was also the potential environmental hazard associated with an early thaw melting the ice too rapidly for the solution containment facilities. One other option for preventing ice formation was heating of the barren solution prior to spraying. Initial plant design allowed for expansion of the propane storage and distribution system as well as modification of the barren piping for a solution heater. This option was not exercised because the operating costs for an adequate system would have been prohibitive, and timely delivery of a system was not available. An investigation was conducted on the various drip irriga¬tion products available, since subsurface solution applicators would eliminate ice formation altogether. Systems utilizing external flow emitters were ruled out because of their ten¬dency to clog when buried. Emitter systems using perforated tubing were also eliminated from consideration due to their inability to adequately control flow over required lengths of tubing. An in-line emitter system was finally selected which demonstrated clog resistance and adequate flow control, enabling direct burial.

The origin of the titanium pigment and metal? industries began with the discovery of the element titanium in 1791 by an Anglican clergyman named William Gregor. The titanium was discovered in magnetic black sands found in the beaches near Cornwall. England. The name titanium was established by the German chemist who discovered the mineral rutile in Hungary. Rutile is the oxide of the element titanium, which he called titan alluding to the mythological titans, giants of ancient Greece. The commercialization of titanium minerals began probably in 1916 with the production of titanium tetrachloride which was to be used in tracer bullets, flares and smoke screens during World War 1. In the 1920's composite pigments based on TiO2 barium sulfate and calcium sulfate were produced, followed by the introduction of the sulfate process anatase TiO2 crystal in the 1930s. The U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1938 began investigating titanium metal technology and promoted the development of the Kroll process. which is the magnesium metal reduction of titanium tetrachloride to produce titanium metal sponge.

Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

Investigations show that injuries and fatalities in mining workplaces in developing countries are increasing. In Turkey, the number of workers killed in occupational accidents in the Zonguldak Hard Coal production region per 100,000 tons of coal production is 2.83 in the private sector and 2.03 in the public sector. For this reason, it is important to conduct risk analyses in terms of occupational health and safety and to implement measures quickly. Risks are evaluated with reactive and proactive approaches. Because hazards and events are often unpredictable in high-risk areas such as coal mining, it is not practical or meaningful to plan proactively in advance for every possible situation underground, especially psychosocial risks. However, it is important to develop protective strategies and measures for unexpected events or to take a reactive approach to prevent future incidents or accidents and to identify psychosocial risks. Therefore, reactive risk assessments based on the tactics and strategies of criminology can be conducted and spatiotemporal geographic information system (GIS) techniques can be utilized, enabling managers in mining workplaces to correct assessments.

The amenability of column flotation for the beneficiation of fluorspar was investigated, and the overall performance of the column, flotation was compared to the performance of the existing conventional flotation cells at the plant. It was estab¬lished that improved grades and recoveries could be obtained by adopting column technology. Acidspar concentrates as¬saying 97% CaF2, suitable for HF manufacturing, can be produced by adopting two-stage column cleaning in place of multistage cleaning by conventional cells. Similarly, metspar concentrates assaying 90% CaF2, suitable for metallurgical applications, can be achieved in a single-stage cleaning by column flotation. This is an improvement over what is now being achieved using the existing conventional rougher and three-stage cleaning cells in the plant. The number of stages, i.e.,four in the acidspar circuit and four in the metspar circuit, including rougher stages, can be eliminated by adopting a three-column configuration. Thus, the cost of production, the complexity of the circuit and the power consumption can be effectively reduced with other attendant benefits.

The well-being of any company is directly related to the well-being of its employees and to the effectiveness with which the personnel resource is managed. In an era when personnel management has steadily become more complex, there is an increased awareness of employee information systems at all levels of management due to: (1) regulations enacted by federal, state, and local government agencies; (2) technological advances within the mining industry which have resulted in the requirement for highly skilled personnel; (3) increasing concern for the confidentiality of employee information; and (4) management's need for information for planning purposes to control costs and for early recognition of trends and potential problems. In the past it was sufficient to maintain records manually. Today computers are necessary to provide information on short notice and effectively manipulate large volumes of' data. This discussion will describe the following aspects of employee information systems: (1) collection and maintenance of information, and (2) applications which include employee health, salary administration, management re- sources, and labor negotiations.

In the early days of minimal environmental protection awareness and unreasoning economy development pressures, little attention was paid to growing environmental concerns in Fuxin colliery, especially the air pollution problem due to the long term mining activities. In order to determine air quality concentration levels, a new technique for synthetic assessment of ambient air quality by using the extension of matter-element method is proposed in this paper. The air pollutants data such as Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Total Suspended Particulates (TSP), Particulate Matter (PM10), and dustfall collected at four different air quality monitoring stations located in four districts of Fuxin colliery is used. The results obtained indicate that TSP, PM10, dustfall and SO2 are the predominant pollutants. Other pollutants such as CO and NOx are also detected in Fuxin colliery. The air pollution comes mainly from industrial emissions, mining activities and the abandoned gangue stockpiles. Compared to those applied to other mathematical assessment methods, it is demonstrated that the extension of matter-element model is quite appropriate for air quality assessment.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1,500 )fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high-velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced, allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to 1,600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

The Little Boulder Creek molybdenum deposit is in central Idaho, in the White Cloud Range about 3.2 km (2 miles) northeast of Castle Peak, the highest peak in the range. The elevation of the deposit is about 2591 m (8500 ft). The deposit is accessible only by helicopter or by a 12.9-km (8-mile) trail from the county road along the East Fork of the Salmon River. The nearest towns are Clayton [25.7 km (16 miles) northeast], Stanley [33.8 km (21 miles) northwest], and Ketchum [45 km (28 miles) south-southeast]. The principal known deposit at Little Boulder Creek is called the "North Zone." In this zone, the molybdenite occurs both in stock- work veinlets and disseminated through metamorphosed quartzite of Pennsylvanian age. Pyrite is ubiquitous, averaging perhaps 0.05%. Scheelite and/or powellite are present in trace amounts. An intrusive quartz monzonite stock, probably of Cretaceous age, bounds the deposit on the west. A steep fault which drops Tertiary age Challis volcanics into contact with the mineralization limits the deposit on the east.

INTRODUCTION Today at LKAB, the primary mining method used is sublevel caving, independent of ore-body size, shape, dip, and geographical location. The mining of small ore bodies with relatively flat dip involves a lot of develop¬ment work, a large initial investment, big dilution, and large ore losses. In 1975 serious investigations into other possible methods, especially for those small ore bodies which do not lie in direct contact with other ore bodies, began. Different methods were studied and a number of in¬teresting ideas came from Russian mines. An analysis was made of one of the proposed methods, sublevel benching, in which mining is carried out from raises, and which uses the throw from the blast to place the broken ore. However, there were reservations about working in big open rooms at great depth, and doubts about the possibility of getting acceptable drilling results in an acceptable environment from raised platforms. Testing was therefore delayed for a time. However the investigations continued and in the fall of 1976, it was decided to try vein mining in a small ore body (Indian) (see Figs. 1 and 2). MINING RESULTS The results are now available from the mining of Indian and are as follows: Ore plan area 1200 m2 Level height 50 m Ore volume 60 000 m3 Ore tonnage 270 000 t Iron content 62% Dip 0.69 rad (40°) Ore thickness 14 m Ore compressive strength 26 MPa Ore C-factor (fracture density) 0.21 Hanging wall compressive strength 28 MPa Hanging wall C-factor 0.27 About 40 000 m of the holes were drilled by ring drills with an average productivity of 85 m/shift; loading of a round (2 rows, 750 m of hole) was usually accomplished in one shift. The total ore recovery was about 270 000 t with an average iron content of 59%, and three to four shifts were required per round (4700 t) to load. The principal of "throwing" the rock during blast¬ing worked well, and no ore remains on the footwall. ROCK CONTROL Before mining commenced at Indian, it was dis¬covered that the rock strength in its vicinity was rela¬tively poor. Since the ore is flatly dipping, and mining was to take place with open rooms, the strength of the hanging wall was of great importance. A supplementary program of exploration drilling was done during the fall of 1976 in order to assess fracture spacing and rock strength from the drill cores. Results showed that the strength of the hanging wall was low because of the many fractures. A decision was made to try cable bolting of the hanging wall by extending some of the ordinary blast¬holes. Cables (20 mm diam) were grouted in these larger holes and the rest of the hole was then utilized for ordinary loading (see Fig. 2). About 100 bolts altogether were installed and, to date, only small falls have occurred and the hanging wall is holding. Its exposed area is 2100 m2 DEVELOPMENT WORK On the 350-m level, four crosscuts (two per mining room), one longitudinal drift, and two elongated drifts (one per raise) for the raise climber were developed as shown in Fig. 1. Of the 230 m of drift, 60 m were in ore and the rest in waste. For mining room A alone, a total of 115 m of drift were needed with 30 m in ore. The drift dimensions were about 4.5 X 5.5 m. In the drifting on the 300-m level, two connecting drifts were driven from one existing transport drift forward to the respective raises. The total development was 93 m, all in waste (Fig. 1). The two raises having a length of 80 m each were driven at an angle of 0.68 rad (39°) from the hori¬zontal. They were driven along the footwall contact with a separation of 30 m and had an area of 10 m2. LONG-HOLE DRILLING The drilling of long holes with the ring drilling unit began in the fall of 1977 in raise A. The equipment consisted of an Alimak raise climber, equipped with a lower platform from which the charging was done.

Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. World kaolin production World production statistics (Coope, 1979; Table 1) demonstrate that kaolin is produced in many areas of the world. "Shin-Yokohama station (tentative name), one of the station of the Sotetsu - Tokyu through line (ST line), is under construction by the OPEN – CUT method. The Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm Wall is implemented as an earth retaining wall. This earth retaining wall is utilized as a main body of a subway station. It is the first time to utilize this earth retaining wall as the main body. There are two difficult issues for this project. One is that this station is planned under busy major road and there are many underground utilities, for example, an electrical transmission line. Because of that, construction area is limited. The other is that this station is located in a thick soft clay layer. This layer has a high risk of consolidation settlement because of draining during main excavation. Thus, high water tightness is required for this earth retaining wall. This paper reports design and construction methods for the Underground Soil–Cement Steel Diaphragm wall introduced as a part of the body of the subway station.1. OUTLINE OF SHIN-YOKOHAMA STATION 1-1. Location and structure of Shin-Yokohama Station Shin-Yokohama station is an intermediate station on the ST line connected to the Tokaido-Shinkansen bullet train, the JR-Yokohama line and the Yokohama Municipal Subway. Access to Tokyo and the Tokaido- Shinkansen from the eastern part of Yokohama city will be improved by this project. In addition, the number of estimated passengers of this station is one hundred thousand people/day because a soccer stadium (Nissan Stadium: 72,000 people), a huge indoor arena and a hotel are located in this area. This station consists of 4 stories and 3 spans (Max width; 29m, Depth; 33m, Length; 325.5m). Completion image is shown in Figure 2. Generally, stations have 1 platform and 2 trucks. But this station has 2 platforms and 3 tracks because some of ST line trains return at this station and a train deadheads from Hazawa station to this station in an emergency. This station is planned as 4 stories underground station, and the platform is on the lowest story. The reason why this station is in such a deeper position is to prevent the alignment from interfering with the Yokohama Municipal Subway station and foundation piles for bridge piers existing along the alignment. Even under the constraint conditions, earth covering should be shallow as much as possible. As a result, the tunnel edge is very close to the foundation pile, and the gap is only about 2m (Figure 3). In addition, passengers will be able to change trains easily from the ST line to the Yokohama Municipal Subway or vice versa at this station."

"According to research presently being conducted on selective lithium recovery in seawater, inorganic adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity for capturing lithium ions from liquid lithium resources are called lithium ion-sieves (LISs). Their low toxicity, low cost and high chemical stability make LISs suitable for lithium recovery from seawater. In the present study, the ultrathin LMO nanofibers with controlled diameter were successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique with a hypothesis that greater aspect ratio (i.e., smaller diameter) would lead to the enhanced recovery of lithium ion from seawater. Design of Experiment (DOE) and dimensionless analysis were performed to systematically optimize the diameter and morphology of nanofibers. Several complementary techniques including FE-SEM and XRD were used to evaluate the physical/physicochemical properties of the nanofibers. Lastly, the lithium ion recovery was tested for the nanofibers with different physical properties using lithium ion solution. INTRODUCTION Demand for lithium resources is increasing in many industries across the world.1-2 However, the conventional resources for lithium is very limited, and it even gets worse to secure the resources due to low grade and/or complexity of feed materials. Much effort has been, therefore, devoted to obtaining lithium from aqueous lithium resources. Several methods such as solar evaporation3-4, co-precipitation5, and solvent extraction6 have been proposed for recovering lithium from an aqueous lithium source, but there are limitations on its use; It takes a very long time or conditions such as temperature, pH and Mg/Li ratio are severe. Lithium ion-sieve (LIS) materials are considered as a good lithium adsorbent because of their unique chemical structure that can selectively separate lithium ion from brine and seawater.7- 10 Furthermore, their low toxicity, low cost, and high chemical stability make LIS suitable for lithium recovery from aqueous lithium resources. Spinel hydrous manganese oxide (HMn2O4) derived from spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) after topotactically extracting lithium from the spinel structure by acid treatment is most widely investigated LIS.10, LIS materials have been actively studied in various forms for easy handling and high efficiency (i.e. membrane11,12, foam13-14, granular15,16). Among them, the 1-D nanostructure LIS with high specific surface area is excellent in efficiency.9 In this study, we present the part of our recently submitted work17. Specifically, we fabricated systemically lithium manganese oxide nanofibers with different diameter as a lithium ion adsorbent using electrospinning technique through design of experiment (DOE). Enhanced lithium ion adsorption properties of the HMn2O4 nanofibers with different diameter were investigated in lithium liquid resources."

Introduction The frigid regions of Canada's high arctic islands are well-known for major oil and gas explorations. But mining leads the way in development. Cominco Ltd.'s Polaris mine is in its second full year of commercial production, and outstripping the rated production capacity foreseen by its planners. The Polaris mine is located on the shore of Little Cornwallis Island, near the settlement of Resolute Bay. The mine property is compact. It occupies about 3 km2 (0.5 sq miles) of the vast Arctic landscape. A number of mining and technological firsts were necessary to bring a mine into production at this 76° North latitude. Development constraints that had to be overcome included climate, remote location, and the limited ice-free shipping season. Construction of the entire process plant and ancillary facilities took place on a barge in the South where labor and supplies are plentiful. The plant was towed through ice-strewn waters to its permanent location at the mine site 1450 km (900 miles) from the North Pole. Freighters moved the first shipments to the South during ice break-up in late summer 1982. Most of the zinc concentrate is sold to European smelters. The remainder is tolled at a custom smelter in Europe, and the resulting metal is sold by Cominco. Lead concentrate is sold to European smelters. The mine was designed to produce 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate and 41 kt/a (45,000 stpy) of lead concentrate. Actual production in 1983 was considerably greater, with both mill throughput and feed grades being higher than forecast. Production was 217 kt (239,300 st) of zinc concentrate and 51 kt (56,300 st) of lead concentrate. Average milling rate was 2.3 kt/d (2500 stpd), well above the designed capacity of 2.1 kt/d of (2300 stpd). Arctic Climate Extremes The climate is typical of the Arctic: very dry with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. From November through February, there is continuous darkness. Continuous daylight prevails from April to August. Precipitation is light, rivaling the Sahara desert at about 127 mm (5 in.) of rain and snow a year. An almost continual wind forms deep snow drifts against any obstacle on the ground. Temperatures range from a winter low of about -50°C (-58°F) to a relatively pleasant 15°C (59°F) during sunny days in August. Freeze-up begins in September and ice thickness increases from less than 0.3 m (1 ft) in early October to a maximum of about 2.1 m (7 ft) in May.
