"A cationic surfactant, tetradecyl tributyl phosphonium chloride (TTPC), was first used as a collector. Flotation characteristics of muscovite using TTPC have been investigated through flotation tests. And dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC) was tested for comparison. Their adsorption mechanisms on muscovite surface were clarified using zeta potential measurement, DFT calculation and molecular dynamics (MD). The flotation results indicate that the recovery of muscovite decreases when the pH increases in the presence of surfactants. When a maximum of recovery was reached, the dosage of TTPC was 2×10-5mol/L which was half of that of DTAC. Zeta potential measurements confirm that the TTPC displays a stronger collecting power than DTAC and is a superior collector for the muscovite flotation. DFT calculation and MD simulations show that TTPC interacts with the muscovite mainly through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bonding. The conclusions drawn from purely theoretical computations matched remarkably well with the experimental results. Keywords: Quaternary phosphonium salts; Flotation collectors; Flotation INTRODUCTION Muscovite mica is widespread in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It has the general composition KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2. Muscovite mica exhibits perfect cleavage along the (001) plane, which exposes interlayer potassium ions[1-3]. In aqueous suspensions, the potassium ions readily enter into solution, leading to the development of a net negative charge on the (001) plane[4-6]. The surface of the muscovite mica is negatively charged at all pH > 1[7]. Due to the negative charge surface over the whole pH range of 2–12, the muscovite mica would not be expected to respond to anionic collectors in the absence of an activator. Conversely, the mineral is readily recovered using cationic collectors. However, until now, various amines and their derivatives (with N atoms as the center) are still the only available cationic collectors which still had their shortcomings such as weak selectivity, low flotation speed. Since few types of cationic collectors could be used, in some sense, the limitations of collectors are increasing significantly and the cationic flotation is facing more and more challenges. Quaternary phosphonium salts, as novel cationic surfactants, are widely used in antimicrobial, catalysis and surface modification field due to their biological activities, hydrogen bonding capability, stability and superior group electrical property[8-10]. There are a number of processes where quaternary phosphonium salt surfactants have shown better properties than quaternary ammonium salts and amines. Although the adsorption of quaternary phosphonium salt surfactants at the bacterium–liquid interface has been studied thoroughly, the case of adsorption in mineral surface has not been investigated thus far."

"In the present work, we investigate the effects of roasting temperature and time on the transformation of the titanium (Ti)-bearing phase and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) phase in Ti-bearing electric arc furnace molten slag during the molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment process. With applied temperature of 700 °C for 60 min, and a mass ratio of Ti-bearing electric arc furnace slag to NaOH, or Rslag/NaOH, of 1:1.2, the conversion ratios of the Ti-bearing phase and the MgAl2O4 phase reached about 98.3 percent and 88.1 percent, respectively. Moreover, investigation of the reaction kinetics indicate that the conversion of these phases during the molten NaOH treatment process is a typical solid-liquid reaction, and it can be theoretically described by the unreacted shrinking core model. The conversion ratio of the Ti-bearing phase was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction step, with an apparent activation energy of 41.76 kJ/mol. The decomposition of the MgAl2O4 phase was found to be controlled by the surface chemical reaction in the early stage of 0 to 20 min from start of reaction, changing to diffusion control in the later stage of 20 to 60 min. The apparent activation energies of the process were determined as 55.88 and 22.72 kJ/mol, respectively.IntroductionChina has rich mineral resources of vanadium–titanium magnetite ore deposits, and the iron and steel industry in the country produces millions of tons of titanium (Ti)-bearing slag every year. The problem of how to dispose of the Ti-bearing slag has attracted much attention, and various approaches have been developed, including the acid process (Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2011; Zhang and Nicol, 2010; Li et al., 2011), alkali fusion process (Han et al., 2012; Middlemas, Fang and Fan, 2013; Nayl, Awwad and Aly, 2009; Lasheen, 2008; Zhang, Qi and Zhang, 2009), carbonization and chlorination process (Liu et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2012; Fu et al., 2012; Liu, 2009), selective crystallization process (Lei and Xue, 2008; Li et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, these processes have been beset by various functional, economical and ecological problems (Yu and Chen, 2010). With environmental protection regulations becoming increasingly rigorous, and demand growing for the comprehensive utilization of resources, the focus is on methods to treat Ti-bearing slag with high efficiency and mild reaction conditions (Nazari and Riahi, 2011; Wu et al., 2013)."

"The dissolution behavior of lateritic nickel ore containing 1.2% Ni, 40.6% Fe, 9.5% SiO2 and 9.59% MgO by sulfuric acid was investigated. The ore was characterized adequately by different techniques such as chemical analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic measurements. The characterization results did not reveal any distinct mineral phase for nickel; it was associated with mineral phases like goethite, hematite, chromite and serpentine in various proportions. The beneficiation studies by hydrocyclone, magnetic separation and flotation did not enrich the nickel value. Reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation indicated only 2%Ni with 28.9% yield. Consequently, the recovery of nickel values from the lateritic ore by acid leaching under different conditions was studied. The kinetics of leaching obey the first order rate equations. The recovery of nickel was found to be influenced by temperature. It was observed that at an acid concentration of 2M, leaching temperature 363 K, time 240 min and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10, it is possible to leach out more than 95% Ni.IntroductionThe demand for nickel is ever increasing. Nickel is used to impart specific properties to steel, titanium and aluminium, and also is used in petrochemicals, catalysts, batteries, etc. It has been estimated that nickel oxide ores account for about 70% of the world nickel reserves. However, most nickel is sourced from sulfide ores. Nickel is extracted from sulfide ore by size reduction, followed by flotation to obtain a nickel-rich concentrate. The concentrate is then pyrometallurgically processed by smelting to produce a nickel-rich matte after discarding an iron-rich slag. Due to the increasing demand for nickel in stainless steel and other alloys, nickel is also extracted from many secondary sources. The recovery of nickel from oxide ores is now gaining momentum, and more exploitation of this ore is being attempted by advanced as well as environmentally feasible, cost-effective techniques. Dalvi et al. (2004) has reported that, due to the increase in demand, the world nickel production from laterites is expected to increase every year from the current level of production. In recent years, investigations of the use of low-grade ores, spent catalysts, clays, etc., have intensified to meet the market demand and also due to a shortage of high-grade nickel bearing ores (Al-Mansi and Abdel, 2002; Baba et al., 2009; Ismail et al., 2011)."

"First Majestic Silver Corp. (FMS) is a silver mining company founded in 2002 that operates exclusively in Mexico. It has six producing silver mines, one of which is the La Encantada silver mine (La Encantada) located in the state Coahuila. La Encantada is located near the southern United States border and 708 km (440 miles) north of the city Torreon.La Encantada is located in the Sierra Madre Oriental and is a high-temperature carbonate replacement deposit. Mineralization in La Encantada occurs in many different forms such as veins, chimneys, breccia pipes and reefs (mantos). Mineralization is mainly oxides of iron, zinc, lead and manganese, with high concentrations of sulfides at depth relating to two main intrusive events: the Milagros Intrusive and the La Prieta Skarn.Mining began in La Encantada during the 1950s with small vertical shafts, drifts and raises. It focuses on the high-grade silver zones using traditional hoists and extraction methods, before branching into two main separate mining camps: El Plomo and Penoles camp. Penoles, the previous owner, focused mainly on large ore bodies using post pillar cut-and-fill mining method to extract the higher-grade material. Due to the type of ground, irregularity of pillars, and rock conditions, large amounts of high-grade pillars had to be left in situ to ensure the stability of the excavations. The mined-out areas would then be filled with lower-grade material to assist in the stability of the secondary level. These room-and-pillar development entries were 2.5 m x 2.5 m (8.2 ft x 8.2 ft) and spaced every 10 m (32 ft), leaving a vertical pillar of 7.5 m (25 ft). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. After the acquisition of the mine, the company began the conversion of the surveying reference system from a local grid (Maria Isabel Shaft as 0,0) to the Nav27 coordinate system, and subsequently converted to the WGS84 coordinate system in 2015. Due to the extensive history of the mine, different areas were surveyed with different systems, causing significant challenges when designing the principal extraction levels, pillar heights and ramp locations. To overcome this difficulty, the entire mine was resurveyed and the old workings transposed to the new coordinate system, except for some inaccessible areas due to poor ground conditions or ground collapses. To further ensure pillar height and the safety of the mine workers, probe holes were drilled during the development process."

The Midvale Slag Site covers 300 acres in Midvale, Salt Lake County, Utah. Midvale (population 10,000) is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area (population 936,000). Between 1902 and 1971, United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Co. smelted ores on the site to produce copper, gold, lead, and silver. Figure 1 shows a picture of the historical Midvale smelter operations. [ ] When operations ceased, the site was estimated to contain 2 million tons of slag from these operations. The smelter no longer exists. In 1971, Valley Materials, Inc., acquired the site to process the slag into materials for railroad beds and asphalt highways. During the 1980s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) raised concerns regarding environmental impacts associated with the historical site operations. The Midvale Slag Superfund Site was listed on the NPL in 1991. The Site consists of two Operable Units (OUs): OU1 covering the properties north and adjacent to former ore smelting operations; and OU2 covering the smelter site itself. OU1 had historically been affected by wind blown slag dust and stack emissions occurring on OU2 and the Sharon Steel site further to the south. These emissions resulted in elevated levels of arsenic and lead in the native soils. The EPA issued the final Record of Decision (ROD) for the OU1 Site in 1995. The OU1 ROD required the implementation of institutional controls for the undeveloped portions of OU1 in order to restrict future land use to commercial/industrial purposes unless additional remediation was performed. Hence, the land comprising OU1 was originally considered in the ROD to be suitable for commercial or industrial purposes without the need for remedial action. However, development of OU1 for other land uses, including residential or recreational, would require additional assessment and probable remediation. The OU2 parcel was remediated by EPA to allow future land development, and the Sharon Steel site was remediated by EPA and deleted from the NPL. PROPERTY TRANSACTION AND REDEVELOPMENT In February 2006, a private development company, Mercer Bingham Junction, LLC. (MBJ) purchased 130 acres of the OU1 property for the purpose of performing environmental remediation, and developing mixed residential and commercial real estate. Development of the property was conducted in cooperation with USEPA Region 8 (EPA), the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ) and Midvale City. The guidelines under which residential development could occur were defined by EPA. The 130 acres was to be developed for open space, residential and commercial use as part the Midvale City Bingham Junction development. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the proposed land uses. [ ] In May 2005, MBJ began pre-acquisition due diligence activities to purchase the 130 acres of OU1 north of 7200 South Street, which now comprises the Bingham Junction Development. This included the completion of Phase I and limited Phase II investigations. The Phase II investigations were performed to evaluate arsenic and lead concentrations in the planned residential areas of the site, and to explore the contents of the historic landfill on the property. The historic landfill area was on the far west side of OU1, adjacent to the Jordan River. Soil samples collected during the Phase II investigation showed that the planned residential parcels did not currently meet the criteria established in the Tech Memo and that additional placement of fill or soil excavation would be required for residential development in this area. An evaluation performed by the previous owner of the property, Littleson, Inc., showed similar results.

INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. Introduction Though temporarily shutdown due to the depressed economy, the Henderson mine is a large underground molybdenite producer, using a continuous panel-caving mining system. The location of the ore body requires access from the surface through three shafts, the collars of which are located about 3.15 km (10,350 ft) above sea level. At this altitude, normal temperatures are such that heat must be added to intake-ventilation air for about half of each year. This prevents ice from building up in the intake shafts, waterlines from freezing underground, employee discomfort, and equipment-related problems such as pneumatic rock drill icing and cold starting of diesel engines. Because of topographic and environmental constraints, the Henderson mill and concentrator are located 24 km (15 miles) from the mine, on the west side of the Continental Divide. All ore from the mine is transported to the mill by an electrified rail haulage system, with 15.4 km (9.6 miles) of the trip being underground through a double-track tunnel. A shaft at the midpoint of the tunnel exhausts air drawn from the mine and from the portal that is at an elevation of 2.7 km (8,950 ft). Intake air at the portal must be heated for part of the year to prevent ice buildup. Mine Ventilation System The mine ventilation system uses three sources of fresh air and two exhausts. The primary freshair intake is No. 3 shaft. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 698 m (2,291 ft). An airflow of 755 m3/s (1.6 mil¬lion cfm) is supplied to this shaft by two vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) fans on the surface. The air is distributed within the mine by means of fresh-air distribution levels connected to production and development levels by raises. A secondary source of fresh air to the mine is provided by No. 2 shaft, the primary man and material access. This shaft is concrete lined to a diameter of 8.5 m (28 ft) for a total depth of 946 m (3,105 ft). Downcast airflow is induced by a pressure differential produced by the fans in the system such that net intake and exhaust volumes are equal. The No. 2 shaft flow of 165 m3/s (350,000 cfm) enters the mine network from the production and haulage levels. Exhaust air is moved from the various working levels through connecting raises to exhaust col¬lection levels that return it to No. 1 shaft. No. 1 shaft is the primary mine exhaust. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 788 m (2,584 ft). Three vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) exhaust fans are located at the collar of No. 1 shaft, producing a flow of 850 m3/s (1.8 million cfm). In addition, an airflow of 71 m3/s (150,000 cfm) from the intake distribution level is exhausted via the haulage tunnel, by means of No. 4 shaft located midway in the tunnel. The main features of the mine ventilation network are summarized in Fig. 1. Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 57 km (35 miles) long and consists of two par-allel single-track tubes with an ex-cavation diameter ranging from 8.8 to 9.5 m (28.8 to 31.2 ft). These are interlinked by cross-passages every 312 m (1,000 ft). Two multifunction stations (MFS) are located in the sections Sedrun and Faido, at one-third and two-thirds of the entire tunnel length (Fig. 1). These will be used for the diversion of trains to the other main tube via tunnel crossovers, for the housing of tech-nical infrastructure and equipment and for potential emergency stops. To reduce construction time, the GBT was divided into five sections and was excavated from several sites simultaneously. The tunnel was excavated from the two portals, Erstfeld in the north and Bodio in the south, and also from three intermediate attacks, with their corresponding access tunnels, in Amsteg and Faido and two vertical 800-m (2,624-ft) deep shafts in Sedrun.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on how mine geologists added about 141t (4.53 million oz) at Newmont Mining’s gold operations in Nevada during 2003. Part one (ME, July2004, pp. 19-26) showed how cross-functional teamwork among mine geologists, engineers, metallurgists and operators added $65 million in revenues at Newmont’s Gold Quarry Mine. Part two deals with how this same cross-functional team added about 25.8 t (830,000 oz) of gold reserves and two years of life at the company’s LoneTree Mine. This was done through improved reconciliation methods, pit optimization designs and updated geotechnical parameters. Part two also discusses how Newmont’s Nevada mine personnel added about 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold reserves at its Twin Creeks Mine, extending the mine’s life by several years. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. The Umiray Angat 13,2 km long tunnel in Philippines have been bored through extremely variable and difficult ground conditions including a number of special events. In particular the following adverse conditions were found: faults in decomposed ground, high temperature rocks, extremely rapid and important convergence phenomena, water inflows up to 800 litres per second. The special El Nino climatic conditions caused a long dry season and lower the level of the lake that was granting the access by barge to the site under the minimum navigable level. Many equipment have had therefore to be transported to site by a 10 ton capacity helicopter, after having been partially dismounted. For the same reason most of the tunnel drive have been bored servicing the site by 1 ton capacity helicopters to transport materials, spares and personnel. In order to overcome the above geological and logistic problems several innovation were introduced and tested in this project. Despite all that difficulties the 13,2 km of tunnel were bored in about 24 months, with a global average of 500 m/month.

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

And Rabcewicz said ?tunnels should be driven full face whenever possible.? ADECO, which stands for ?Analysis of Controlled Deformations in tunnels,? now allows us to fulfll Rabcewicz?s dream in any stress-strain condition. In order to achieve that dream and its consequent control over cost and schedule, however, NATM must be abandoned for the ADECO. The paper presents the basic concepts in the ADECO approach to design, construction and monitoring of tunnels together with some case histories, including: full face excavation for Cassia tunnel (width of 22 m, height of 14 m) in sands and silts under 5 m cover below an archeological area in Rome, Italy; Tartaguille tunnel (face area > 100 m2) advanced full face in highly swelling and squeezing ground under 100 m cover where NATM led to catastrophic failure, France; and 80 km of tunnels (face area > 100 m2) advanced full face in highly squeezing/swelling ground under 500 m cover for the high-speed railway line between Bologne and Florence, Italy (turnkey contract).

In a mineral processing plant, the determination of a preventive maintenance schedule is one of the most important maintenance policies. In this study, to determine the preventive maintenance schedule for the Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant in Turkey, a mean quality control chart was constructed using the historical concentrate B2O3 grade data. The effect of preventive maintenance scheduling on B2O3 grades was monitored using the mean quality control chart. It was determined that recovery increased after each preventive maintenance scheduling. Close examination of the mean quality control charts indicated that there were three periods that showed different grade characteristics. These were identified as the period ?prior to preventive maintenance,? the period ?after preventive maintenance? and the period ?requiring preventive maintenance.? These periods were compared as two independent samples by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Application of this test for interpretation of the mean quality control chart enabled the authors to analyze the system effectively, and it showed that the preventive maintenance for this plant should be scheduled at four-month intervals.

The Ciénega project, now under construction by Peñoles group, is located in the mountains of northwest Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in a 4-km (2.5mile) long system of veins. An underground operation will be built. The planned 1 kt/ d (1100 stpd) process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to the development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994. Ciénega’s ore bodies consist of quartz veins containing gold, silver, lead and zinc values. The vein thicknesses vary from 2 to 10 m (6.5 to 33 ft) with a northwest trend and nearby vertical dip. Veins are hosted in Tertiary volcanic rocks. The district has intermittently been explored since 1971 by Penoles. After the third series of diamond drilling and direct development work on vein, Peñoles decided to begin project construction.

The present work explores the reutilization of red mud, an industrial waste arising from the production of alumina, as a component of isolation technologies for hazardous substances. The work involved the study and optimisation of the geotechnical properties of red mud in conjunction with adsorption experiments of As(V) and Hg(II). The results from both types of experiments were integrated in a dispersion-diffusion model to calculate migration curves and minimum thickness of the red mud compacted layer. The geotechnical studies showed that compaction increased the stability and decreased the hydraulic conductivity of red mud barrier. Red mud sorbed high amounts of As (up to 44 mmmol kg-1) and Hg (up to 9.2 mmmol kg-1). The calculated minimum thickness of the red mud barrier was 1-10 cm for As and 2-19 cm for Hg, for an operation period of 35 years. The results obtained let to conclude that the reuse of red mud as a component of isolation systems of hazardous substances represents a viable alternative use of this residue.

The PT Freeport Indonesia‘s Deep Ore Zone(DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start in year 2000 and to ramp up to25,000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarizes the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of one of these fans. The fan was installed on the surface in a parallel arrangement with two others. It has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.
