"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

In 1974- COGEMA (Compagnie Generale des Matieres Nucleaires) of France decided to exploit a uranium deposit discovered several years ago in a Permian formation of Southern France, near the town of Lodeve (Herault). The uranium occurs in black shales with high calcium carbonate content (7-10% CO2) and it was then necessary to use alkaline leaching. A fine grind (60-65% minue 270 mesh) was also necessary to obtain good' uranium recovery. A minimum of fresh water must be added to the alkaline system due to solution recycling. Filtration must be used because cake-washing requires less fresh water than countercurrent decantation.

Thousands of years ago, Chinese water well drillers developed a technique for punching holes in the ground by lifting massive metal bits and letting them fall against the rock. With diligence, they could pound away about 2 feet a day. The Chinese drillers pounded holes in the ground this way for almost 2000 years. In the 1860's, French water well drillers developed a perforated bit moistened by fluids pumped into the hole through a hollow rod. The fluids carried the cuttings from the hole and spared the Frenchmen the task of bailing them out by hand.

Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, exceeded only by oxygen. Silicon dioxide forms a crystalline structure of repeating SiO2 molecules which form characteristically hard, durable crystals. As a result, crystalline silica is Ubiquitous in the crustal rocks, sediments and the mineral products derived from mining. An examination of the history of studies that identify silica as a human and animal carcinogen is presented in the context of the development of a public health policy in California. The implications for the cost of conducting aggregate and other mining operations in the state are discussed.

The City of Los Angeles capital improvement program includes the construction of a new 35-km interceptor sewer. This sewer will be built as a deep tunnel with finished diameters ranging from 2- to- 4 meters. The project will be constructed concurrently in two phases; an 18-km East-West and a 17-km North-South segment. The new sewer provides additional conveyance capacity for an existing deteriorating sewer that is scheduled for rehabilitation. Large sewage spills during the El Niño storms of 1998 resulted in a Cease and Desist Order that established an aggressive schedule for the completion of the project.

This paper is a presentation of findings based upon an econometric model of the world zinc industry. The model was developed as a simple but useful aid for long-run forecasting and planning purposes. A structure was developed for both simulating real zinc price effects on production and consumption, and for forecasting long-run annual zinc prices and supply/ demand levels. Moreover, a methodology is provided to incorporate the effects of: (1) historic technological advances in zinc supply, and (2) the development of the competitive plastics industry. Finally, reduced form equations are used to generate ex post forecasts to evaluate the model's performance.

Construction of the CSO Retention - Treatment Tunnel, Segment 1 in Dearborn, Michigan includes excavation for an overflow Structure with a minimum inside diameter of 15.24 m (finished). The excavation extends downward through overburden soil including a 15.2 m thick zone of potentially weak clay. This paper presents the subsurface data for the clay and a geotechnical analysis thereof, together with predictions of the behavior of the planned 15.54 m inside diameter open end caisson as it is sunk through this potentially weak zone. In a companion paper, the writers will compare the behavior observed with that predicted.

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

A novel system for the depression of pyrite and the ash-forming minerals has been developed. A metal ion, including but not restricted to Fe+2, is added to form a hydroxide coating on the pyrite or ash-forming minerals. A polymeric depressant is then added to attach to these re- surfaced minerals. Nearly 200flotation tests with I1 different coals indicate the effectiveness of this system. Many of the important process variables such as the coal source, frother- collector system. grind size and procedure, pH, metal ion, and depressant type and concentration have been studied.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. It also operates a 418-km (260-mile) railroad that links the mine to the port. IOC has approximately 1,900 employees. Its shareholders are Mitsubishi Corp. (26.18 percent), Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund (15.1 percent) and the international mining group Rio Tinto, which is its major shareholder (58.72 percent) and operator, with activities in more than 40 countries throughout the world. The IOC was incorporated in 1949 and by 1954 it had completed the Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) rail line. IOC began mining in Schefferville, Quebec by 1954 and closed those operations down in 1982. In 1962, IOC commissioned the present day Carol Project consisting of mining, concentration and pelletizing facilities in Labrador City, Newfoundland. In 2004, IOC shipped its one-billionth tonne of ore on the QNS&L Railway. In 2005, IOC celebrated 50 years of mining history. The company expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m x 1 m x 1 m or 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects, including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal, an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine that, to date, has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass, resulting in reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analyzed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been an important source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incom- plete although gold production estimates for the South Pass- Atlantic City district range from a low of 2.0 Mg (70,000 oz) (Koschmann and Bergendal, 1968) to a high of 9.8 Mg (327,000 oz) (Hausel, 1980). From 1962 to 1983 iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt and production totaled more than 91 Mt (90 million It). The supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt occur in a tightly folded synform bounded by Late Archean granite and granodiorite. The youngest of the Archean successions has a reported Rb-Sr isochron age of 2.8 b.y. (Stuckess, et al., 1985). Metamorphism of the supracrustals increases towards the flanks of the belt and is amphibolite-grade enclosing a small island of greenschist facies rocks. The supracrustal sequence consists of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks that are divisible into four mappable units. The metasediments include metagraywacke, quartzite, pelitic schist, banded iron formation, metaconglomerate, and graphitic schist. Metavolcanics include metabasalt, meta-andesite, and ultramafic schist. These supracrustals have been intruded by mafic sills and dikes and tonalitic stocks and dikes. Two granite plutons and associated pegmatites intrude the supracrustals in the western portion of the belt, and the supracrustals exhibit both fault and intrusive contacts with granitic batholiths along the western and eastern margins. The northeastern flank of the Archean belt is unconformably over- lain by Paleozoic sediments, and the southern portion of the belt is onlaped by Tertiary sediments.

The evolution of open-pit mining has been rapid during the last two decades. The development of larger, more productive and efficient equipment has been one of the key factors in this open-pit advancement. Selection of the proper equipment and its correct usage is paramount to successful operation while maximizing return on investment. The quantity of material being moved prior to mining the saleable product is increasing at a significant rate. For example, at a southwestern copper mine more than two hundred million tons of over- burden have been removed prior to exposing an ore which contains less than 1% copper. A recent survey of twenty-three Western Hemisphere copper mines reveals the average strippingratio was 2.2:l with a range of 0.9-8.5:l. In the face of increased mineral demand, the resulting technological developments and rising overburden to ore ratios, many open-pit mines now use totally different concepts for the removal of ore and overburden. An increasing number of these concepts now being installed include wheel tractor scrapers as a major part of the material handling system for unconsolidated overburden removal. To say scrapers move only unconsolidated overburden is incorrect. On the contrary, ripped phosphate rock, copper ore, iron ore, and moderately consolidated overburden are also being moved by scrapers in various areas of the world. As reported in the Minerals Year- book, however, about one-half of the material moved in metal and non-metal mines is never drilled and blasted or broken by other means. We will, therefore, in this paper, concentrate on the role of wheel tractor scrapers in unconsolidated overburden; the area of greatest usage.

It is calculated that since the beginning of last century, which practically coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, our civilization has consumed around 239.5 million tons of copper (see: Table 1). According to the most pessimistic projections of today, with only a 2.5% annual growth rate in demand, we are bound until the end of this century to consume another 200 million tons of copper in remaining 17 years. A recent study made by US Bureau of Mines (1) indicates that the proven ore reserves of 150 major operating mines and about 120 deposits sufficiently explored for development and feasibility studies accumulate a total mass of 49.3 billion tons of ore, assaying an average of 0.82% Cu and containing around 324 million tons of recoverable copper. Consequently, there is a high grade of probability that the bulk of our future ore supplies, for our demand of, say, next 25 years will cane precisely from these mines. The interesting point in USBM study is that it indicates the recoverable byproduct content of these ores and which is: 118.2 million troy ounces of gold 2277.4 million troy ounces of silver 7.1 million tons of lead 24.7 million tons of zinc 1.3 million tons of nickel 3.1 million tons of molybdenum 765 thousand tons of cobalt, and 720 thousand troy ounces of platinum. This information gives us a relatively reliable profile of our future ores for next 25 years, and thus makes possible evaluation of byproduct credits in our future copper mining and producing activities.

The observation method is a design optimization approach for the drill and blast method in tunneling. This method includes first identifying the hazard scenarios through site investigation, formulating suitable solutions, obtaining feedback during construction, and finally using that data to optimize the design methods. This paper illustrates the application of the observational method for T-48, a railway tunnel project in the Himalayas. It is a 10.2 km long tunnel with a parallel escape tunnel and 26 cross passages. The use of observational methods in this project optimized the overall tunnel design and considerably saved the overall project cost.

The conceptual designs of three new applications for the biogenic &S treatment of metal- containing waters are presented. These include: 1. the treatment of a circumneutral-pH ground water containing Zn and Cd using limestone as an alkalinity source, 2. a two-step treatment process where toxic heavy metals in contaminated ground water are recovered separately from nontoxic metals to lessen disposal costs, and 3. a copper recovery process that may be a low-cost alternative to solvent extraction/electrowinning or cementation for dilute copper leach liquors. Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. Respirable dust produced during blasting is best considered as an initial value problem (IVP). To derive a mathematical model, the following assumptions are made: •At time zero (t = 0), the dust source is at point x = 0 of an infinite drift. •The problem is considered a one-dimensional case. •The mean velocity of air and the diffusion coefficient are constant. •There is no source or sink of dust other than specified at point x = 0 and time t = 0.
