Modern shield TBMs allow tunnel drives through almost any type of ground. Thanks to high elaborated technical measures, significant subsidence of the ground surface can be almost entirely avoided. The tunnel lining behind the TBM must be capable of withstanding all loads without deforming, especially during ring erection and advance. Single-shell tunnel linings behind the TBM, usually reinforced concrete segmental rings, can be designed to fulfill this demand. With many projects, however, damage occurs to the lining. Repair costs may be extremely high. Reasons for damages and possibilities to avoid them are shown and explained.

Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

More than 124,000 people involved in the mining and construction industries throughout the world poured into Las Vegas, NV in March for ConExpo-Con/Agg ’99. Show organizers said this triennial exhibition is the largest equipment show in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest exhibition of any industry. “Clearly, Con-Expo-Con/Agg ’99 was one of the largest trade shows of any industry ever held in the Western Hemisphere,” said Bruno Benna, co-chair of the event. Attendees included mining industry representatives, including aggregates, and sand and gravel producers. In addition, many of the attendees work in the construction, reclamation, forestry, asphalt paving, landscaping and concrete industries. According to show records, about 52% of those attending were company presidents, vice presidents, chief financial officers or managers.

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

What a difference a year makes. One year ago, the iron mining industry and the steelmaking industry in the United States were in trouble. Many companies were in bankruptcy, and talk of plant and mine shutdowns was rampant. At that time, it seemed difficult, if not impossible, to remain competitive with imported steel. In addition, the World Trade Organization declared as illegal the tariffs placed on imported steel. And many questioned the viability of the ironmining and steel industry in the United States. At that time, global economic conditions were the main contributors to the industry’s problems. However, since last year’s meeting, changes in global economics have actually helped the steel industry in the United States. Heavy global demand for steel has caused raw-material shortages worldwide. Much of the increased demand is a result of the economic boom in China. In addition, because of a weak U.S. dollar and higher international freight rates, steel imports into the United States have been reduced to about 50 percent of recent levels. These factors have contributed to a rebirth of the U.S. iron mining and steel industries.

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been increasing focus on environmental and social impacts of the extractive industries, climate change and resource scarcity. The concept of the circular economy aims to replaces the “take-make-dispose” economic model with one that eliminates waste of all kinds and is restorative by design. Such closed-loop systems implicitly aim to reduce the quantity of primary extracted materials entering the economy, thereby affecting supply and demand dynamics, hence mining industry economics. For the metals industry, the ability to engage in, or adapt to the circular economy can be heavily affected by industry structure and geographical factors. Eco-efficiency initiatives that reduce waste and environmental impact may help the mining and metals industry align with some of the goals of the circular economy. This paper focuses on base metals, and explores case studies in copper, lead and zinc. It analyzes primary and secondary metal production, and recycling. It examines company structures and how these affect engagement with the circular economy. CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2012) describes the circular economy as “an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design”, which “replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with restoration”, and “aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems, and, within this, business models”. The concept is systems focused. For materials such as metals, a series of loops are considered, including maintenance of devices, reuse, refurbishment and recycling. Potential methodologies to achieve circular economy outcomes include disassembly and reassembly of manufactured goods, leasing rather than buying major appliances, and converting to renewable energy sources. The circular economy is partially aligned with the principles of eco-efficiency, which relate to reducing the environmental impact per unit of a material produced. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METAL PRODUCTION Base metals (copper, lead, zinc and nickel) are essential ingredients in modern economies and are key commodities produced by the global mining industry. Metal production can be categorized as primary or secondary. Primary metal comes from the processing, smelting and refining of metal content extracted from ores, while secondary production comes from metals recovered from recycled streams (e.g. recycled lead-acid batteries, copper wire scrap, etc.). Metals are stored in natural, anthropogenic in-use and anthropogenic waste stocks. An example of the stocks, flows and processes associated with global copper extraction and use is shown in Figure 1."

The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. [ ] SEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS IN THE AZORES AREA (36ºN ? 40ºN) More than 150 active and fossil hydrothermal systems are known in the oceanic seafloor [6]. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

Although primarily cut-and-cover excavations are required for replacement of the existing elevated I-93 interstate highway through the heart of Boston for the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project, some mined tunnel construction was also undertaken. The mined tunneling conducted was the 22-m-wide northbound roadway structure which passed below a 20-m-deep operating underground subway station that was built in 1913. The innovative underpinning scheme used to support the subway station during construction resulted in the successful mining beneath the subway station with negligible vertical settlement. Two grouting galleries were carefully mined below the subway structure, and pre-grouting of the granulary, pervious glacial soils and weathered bedrock was carried out from these galleries. The reinforced concrete walls of the underpinning structure were constructed within three stacked drifts that were sequentially mined below each grouting gallery. After 11 cross adits were mined between the grouting galleries, cast-in-place post-tensioned girders that spanned between the stacked-drift walls were constructed to support the subway station. The stacked-drift walls also provided lateral support for the 22-m wide by 29-m long by13-m high opening beneath the girders.

Through 1996 and 1997, CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) conducted a project to study the Phalen Mine’s 7 East longwall ventilation network to help determine methane emission patterns that were having a negative impact on coal production. Increased methane emissions were primarily related to mining depth and were also affected by the influence of a large sandstone body located above the worked seam. The research included the installation of tube bundle systems to monitor waste (gob) methane and pressure differentials. The focus of this paper is on the novel use of tracer gas techniques that helped shed light on the performance of the ventilation system and in determining the methane migration paths in the waste.

The soils included 65 m of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2, 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30standard penetration test SPT blows per 300 mm, and 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2. The river crossing, utilizing 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x600 mm steel casing pipe without intermediate jacking stations, was part of a seven kilometer liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission line in South Korea. This 440-m, 1,442-ft, river crossing was microtunneled through three different ground conditions and completed in just over three months. The crossing was achieved with an average of 25 m of ground cover and 15 m of water cover. The Kwang Yang River Crossing was part of a 7 km liquefied natural gas pipeline project for POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The microtunneling machine was custom built for this project. The microtunneling machine selected for this project was tooled with 7 button bits and 2 roller bits. None of the cutter bits were replaced during the drive. Inside the machine, before the spoils laden slurry was pump back to the surface, it would pass through an independent cone crusher. The crusher is placed in the slurry flow to make sure that none of the spoils are so large as to stop the return flow of the slurry. An additional requirement was for the inclusion of a compressed air lock. The air lock was required in the event that the cutter tools required replacement. The cutters were back loaded so that the workers would have access to change the cutters in the event of cutter failure or wear out. No intermediate jacking stations were installed for the drive. The soils included 65 meters of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and 20 mm/minute. The second zone contained 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30 standard penetration test (SPT) blows per 300 mm with production averaging between 80 and 180 mm/minute. The third zone contained 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and20 mm/minute. The steel casing pipe was 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x 6000 mm long. The project profile, see Figure 1, shows the soil conditions. The hand written numbers locate just above the pipeline are the production dates. The circled numbers are the 10 pipe joint increments. At the beginning of the 1990s, Communism fell and signaled the end of the Cold War. The world rejoiced but also watched and waited to see how those countries would restructure themselves. The 1990 SME Annual Meeting was held at the Salt Palace Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The keynote session featured Alistair Frame, chairman of RTZ; Paul Queneau, professor of metallurgy at the University of Utah; and TS Ary, director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The SME Board of Directors voted to hire a Manager of Public Information and Education to be the GEM Program coordinator. This person was to collect and disseminate information that could be used by individual members and Local Sections to interface with government personnel and the general public.

This paper reviews groundwater issues leading to a secondary grouting program at the Chattahoochee Tunnel that was implemented subsequent to the contact grouting program. The secondary grouting program was developed based on infiltration data, geology, and testing programs. This paper includes a brief description of the geological features encountered, as well as describing the grouting program. The success of this grouting operation has been quantified by several methods, and is presented to help others project the costs and benefits of this type of program. Review of initial results and refinements of techniques are also discussed.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

The Chambers Creek Interceptor Sewer Tunnel project consisted of 2-1/2 miles (4 kilometres) of nominal 9-foot (2.7-metre) O.D. tunnel driven through predominantly glacially overridden soils. Mole-Collucio Construction Company initially elected to drive the entire tunnel with a Lovat TBM. However, this machine could not control the fast raveling ground conditions which developed when the TBM encountered sands overlying very dense, hard glacial till or boulders. As a result, a shield and digger machine was brought in for a 1700-foot (518-metre) long segment. Pumped wells spaced roughly 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 metres) apart were utilized to dewater about two-thirds of the alignment during construction. Initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging, with a final lining comprised of pre-cast concrete pipe segments grouted in place.

Geologic resource assessments describe the location, general characteristics, and estimated volumes of resources, whether in-situ or technically recoverable. Such compilations are only an initial step in economic resource evaluation. Forecasts that assume that resources that exist in nature can be commercially produced as needed ignore economic constraints. This paper identifies, by example, the salient features of a geologic assessment that will assure its usefulness for economic analysis. These features are demonstrated with examples of coal resource assessments and coal bed gas assessments.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.
