The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3500°C and sublimes at about 4500°C. It is combustible in the presence of oxygen between 620° and 670°C, but is stable and chemically inert at ordinary temperatures.

Rocks of the Precambrian Shield of Rusk County, Wis., were recognized as a favorable host for volcanogenic base metal deposits by personnel of Bear Creek Mining Co. Most of the county is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift: consequently, geophysical techniques played a prominent role in the exploration program conceived and initiated there in 1966. The original work on three Precambrian exposures was followed by an airborne electromagnetic survey and subsequent ground follow-up. A geophysical evaluation of air-borne anomaly F-22 defined a target which was interpreted as a massive sulfide body. Numerous potential field and electrical tools were utilized to describe the geometry and physical properties of the target. Drilling confirmed the massive sulfide interpretation and eztentually outlined a 6 million-ton copper deposit.

THE thermocouple as a device for the measurement of temperature is rivaled only by the platinum-resistance thermometer. Both instruments are capable of the highest precision, but the thermocouple, on account of its cheapness, ease of construction, and small cross-section, is finding a continually widening field of usefulness for industrial control as well as for laboratory measurements. Formerly, the thermocouple was subject to two disadvantages: errors due to lack of homogeneity of the metal and the labor involved in the interpolation between fixed points on the temperature scale. Former publications from the Geo-physical Laboratory have described the methods' for the selection and testing of thermocouple wire and have presented standard calibration curves2 for platinum-platinrhodiun and copper-constantan couples, so that the most important objections to the thermocouple as a precision thermometer have been removed. The calibration tables published in 1914 covered the range 0-1755° for the platinum-platinrhodium couple and 0-350° for copper-constantan. It has seemed desirable to extend the table for copper-constantan to -200 and also to include a table for the Hoskins thermocouple. Accordingly, in this paper, the new tables are presented, together with a brief explanation of their use; and, finally, certain diagrams and a paragraph on "cold-junction corrections" are given. Standard Calibration Tables.-In Fig. 1, which illustrates how the electromotive force (e.m.f.) of each of the three couples varies with the temperature, the temperatures of one junction are plotted as abscissas and the corresponding thermo-e.m.f.'s as ordinates. Al3Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum was found to exhibit good Charpy impact toughness and little notch sensitivity even though its room-temperature tensile elongation parallel to the whiskers is only 2 pct. This impact behavior was maintained d liquid nitrogen temperature (-196"C). It is postulated that this behavior is due primarily to the presence of the continuous aluminum matrix which provides sufficient 10calized ductility in the vicinity of the crack tip to absorb considerable energy from the advancing crack. The impact behavior of Al-Alni was found to be quite anisotropic. Of six orientations studied, the transverse orientation having the notch normal to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the lowest impact energy, whereas the transverse orientation having the notch parallel to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the highest impact energy. A significant differnce was noted between the impact behavior of material containing needlelike whiskers and that containing bladelike whiskers. Only two of the six orientations studied exhibited complete fracture for the material containing needlelike whiskers. On the other had, most of the specimens containing bladelike whiskers exhibited complete fracture. It was postulated that the bladelike whiskers block transverse flow, thus reducing the amount of plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip. One of the more significant advantages of composite materials is the prospect of combining high strength with toughness. In general, toughness is associated with materials which exhibit considerable ductility and can deform plastically in the presence of a stress concentration. Very strong materials which resist plastic deformation generally exhibit low toughness. At first glance, then, it would appear as though strength and toughness are mutually incompatible so that useful engineering materials would have to be a compromise between the two. One approach to the problem of combining the high intrinsic strength of ceramics with the toughness of metals was to mix them together to form a cermet. Unfortunately, the toughness of cermets was found to be rather disappointing. Whisker reinforcement of metals, however, appears to be a more promising approach. It has been demonstrated that whisker-reinforced metals produced by unidirectional solidification exhibit enhanced strength due to the presence of high strength nonmetallic whiskers. The total strain capacity of these composites in the direction of fiber alignment is limited to that of the fibers, the matrix being unable to carry the load once the fibers have failed. A characteristic, then, of whisker composites is low ductility in the direction of whisker alignment, on the order of a few percent elongation. This low elongation, which is usually associated with brittle behavior, should not be taken as an indication of low toughness. Such a material can exhibit significant ductility in directions other than parallel to the fibers7 and can therefore possess significant intrinsic toughness. Toughness in a fiber-reinforced metal is derived from several mechanisms. The first is due to the toughness of the matrix itself. A continuous ductile metal matrix can act as an effective crack arrest medium by undergoing localized plastic deformation. Cracks initiated from the surface of the composite or from a brittle fiber failure must travel through the matrix before reaching another brittle phase particle. A second crack arrest mechanism peculiar to fiber composites is due to the fact that, as a crack travels through the matrix and approaches a fiber, the plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip will result in loading of the fiber. This causes the matrix shear strength in the plastic zone to be apparently higher, thus extracting more energy from the crack and diverting the crack at an angle to the original direction of propagation. A third crack arrest mechanism occurs in fiber composites which exhibit a weak bond between fiber and matrix. The idea was proposed by Cook and Gordons that if a crack propagating transversely in a fiber composite were made to turn and run along the fibers by decohesion of the fiber-matrix bond, then toughness would be imparted by the blunting of the crack tip and the creation of new surfaces. The last mechanism, interfacial decohesion, is commonly noted in naturally occurring fiber composites such as wood, bone, and bamboo, and has been observed in man-made composites such as glass fiber-reinforced resins,g silica fiber-reinforced aluminum," laminated steel," and tungsten and silica fiber-reinforced electroplated copper.'' The first mechanism, crack arrest by plastic deformation in the matrix, has been noted in tungsten wire reinforced cast copper." The purpose of this investigation was to quantitatively assess the toughness of a whisker-reinforced metal as a function of orientation. Previous investigation considered only cracks propagating nominally perpendicular to the reinforcement. In this investigation, crack propagation in three mutually perpendicular directions as well as three intermediate orientations was investigated. The system chosen for study was the unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eu-tectic alloy which has a microstructure consisting of 10 pct by volume of A13Ni whiskers in a matrix of aluminum This material exhibits two different kinds of whisker morphology, depending upon the rate at which it is solidified.' When faced with excavating vast amounts of overburden at its surface coal mining operation in Centralia, Wash., the Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (Widco) chose to utilize a bucket wheel excavator and shiftable conveyor system. In the early 1970s, Widco-a subsidiary of the Washington Water Power Co.-held reserves of sub-bituminous C coal estimated at some 180 million tons (200 million st). Subsequent investigation of the overlying land formations revealed the need to excavate millions of bank cubic yards of material as part of the mining plans.

The basic work of Z. Jeffries 1,2,3 has long ago established the main features of grain growth in the presence of a dispersed second phase. Working with sintered specimens of initially fine grained tungsten, to which various amounts of thoria had been added, Jeffries found that grain growth was inhibited, that is, practically prevented, up to a certain annealing temperature. When this temperature, which increased with the thoria content, was exceeded, extremely large grains developed abruptly from the fine grained matrix. such a a temperature" was later found by Gross-mann~3,14 in certain types of steel, while ~~i~ showed15 that in other steels grain growth was gradual, without inhibition and abrupt coarsening. Later work demonstrated the connection between coarsening and aluminum additions. The viewpoint that the direct cause of inhibition and coarsening in aluminum killed steels is a fine dispersion of aluminum oxide21 appears to be held quite generally, although some doubts have been voiced even very recently, 20 In steels with Ti additions the titanium carbide phase is considered responsible for the inhibition effects found.20 The coarsening temperature increases with the titanium content. That coarsening may occur, as a result of, certain heat treatments, even in low carboil rimmed sheet steel, was shown by Samuels. He also detected coarsening in a steel ingot of similar composition, after giving it the same heat treatment as that used by him for the sheet material. In this instance the identity of the inhibiting phase has not been determined. However, Tangerding found23 that even the few small carbide particles, which occur in carbonyl iron, have a very marked inhibitive effect. As a result of an oxidizing anneal at 850°C, large grains begin to form at the surface of the carbonyl iron specimen, and gradually grow inward as the subsurface oxidation of the carbide particles progresses and eliminates the obstruction. The carbide particles Can be removed also by annealing in hydrogen, with similar results. But if the oxidizing anneal of 10 hr at 850°C in air is followed between in hydrogen for 75 hr at the Same temperature, grain growth is more hibition usually the whole specimen is transformed into a single crystal (approx. 1.5 cm X 5 cm). The reversed procedure, that is, hydrogen annealing followed by oxidizing annealing leads to smaller grains. Tangerding arrived at the logical conclusion that there must have been in his specimens some additional obstruction to grain growth hibition from a minor impurity, other than carbon. It seems likely that this obstruction was caused by an oxide formed during the oxidizing anneal and gradually reduced rtain the subsequent hydrogen-annealing. Other instances of grain growth inhibition of varying severity, associated with a dispersed second phase, have been described by several authors. Notable examples: lead with 0.06 pet Cu or Ni,24 cartridge brass with 0.12 pct Cr,25 or with up to 0.15

AN observation that is finding fresh confirmation in the leadership of the Allied Nations is "When the need arises, a man will rise to fill it." Much the same can be said of industrial advances in the current emergency. Events and circumstances have created needs for new materials and stimulated the inventive genius of man to fill them. The timely development of fibrous-glass manufacture, in relation to present war needs, is a case in point. HISTORICAL SUMMARY It is probable that the first glass fibers produced by the hand of man were made about 4000 years ago. Successful production of glass fibers for manifold industrial and military uses, on any scale that could begin to meet present needs, has a history spanning a scant four years. The American processes that brought this young industry into being were developed between the years 1931 and 1937; research and manufacturing efforts were consolidated to create a commercially satisfactory operation as late as November 1939. In the 40 months that have elapsed since then, the industry has achieved commercial importance, supplied immense quantities of materials for pre-war industrial expansion to meet "defense" and Lend-Lease needs, and now has reached such importance that it has come largely under the control of the War Production Board for equitable distribution of its major products among 13 claimant agencies. It is worthy of note, however, that the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, began exploratory use of fibrous-glass products in 1932, within one year after the date of the first experimental trials of the new process. This early recognition of the military importance of fibrous glass gave impetus to further research work. The foregoing rapid scanning of historical development must be filled in, lest the impression be created that glass fibers were suddenly created out of thin air, with no antecedent trials, failures, and partial successes. The actual history of glassmaking is lost in antiquity. Probably some nomadic tribesman found molten glass beneath the bed of a hot campfire built upon sand of the proper composition. If his curiosity led him to poke the glowing, viscous pool with a green-wood stick or some handy weapon, it is probable that he drew a glass fiber on the end of his implement. Molten glass has much the same consistency as honey or molasses; it strings out tenuously. Thus, it is quite possible that the first form of glass shaped by man's action was a glass fiber. Artisans in glass, throughout the long history of glassmaking as an art, drew fibers from fine rods for many decorative applications, including "spun glass" decoration in beautiful stemware and the charming millefiori (glass flowers encased in solid glass), and even to create the blood vessels in glass eyes to match a bleary mate.

Hardenability (multiplying) factors for carbon, mongonese, silicon, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum have been developed for hypereutectoid low-alloy steels in which bainite is the first subcritical transformation product. These factors permit the calculation of 95, 80, and 50 pct martensite hardenability from chemical composition when steels with spheroidized structures are quenched from 1475°, 1525°, and 1575°F. The strong contributions to hardenability of the less expensive elements, silicon and manganese, suggest their use to obtain additional hardenability in hypereutectoid low-alloy steels. DURING the past decade a number of investigators'"11 have carefully developed information which permits calculation of the hardenability of medium -carbon low-alloy steels from chemical composition and grain size. Models of photoelastic material were made to simulate a mine roof that had cracked over the edge of the pillars and at the center of the span. Models were restrained from moving laterally outward so they acted as flat arches. Uniform loading was approximated by loading the models along the bottom at eight points spaced equally along the span. It was found that for models with depth to span ratios of 1:3 to 1:6, the maximum stress at the top of the center crack could be calculated directly by the following formula: Elastic stresses in mine roofs composed of sedimentary beds are usually computed by assuming that the immediate roof bed acts as a fully restrained beam uniformly loaded by its own weight and by overlying strata. Very little work has been done to analyze stresses in roof beds or beams which contain vertical (normal to the span) or nearly vertical cracks. Yet every mining engineer has walked safely under roofs that show such cracks. As far back as 1933, Bucky' made model studies of the effect of vertical cracks on the behavior of horizontal strata. He did not make any analysis of the stresses but did show that a cracked beam will stand safely under certain conditions, and also showed that a beam restrained at the ends can crack over the supports and in the middle without collapsing as long as the ends of the beam are not free to move laterally outward. The beam, or rather, part of the beam, acts like a flat arch and supports itself by pushing outward at its supports. In 1941 Evans2 treated analytically the problem of a beam cracked along so many planes perpendicular to the axis of the beam that no tensile stress can operate. He named this type of beam a "voussoir-beam" by analogy to the voussoir-arch. In 1962 ~a~cocks~ modified Evans's solution by including the effect of the shear stress component of the resultant force at the abutment. INTRODUCTION Recent research has shown that popu- lation balance models hold considerabl e promise as a basis for accurate mill scale-up from laboratory batch grinding tests. It has been shown that entire product size distributions from large ball mills can be predicted from data obtained in tests in small mills with errors of less than one or two percent. This level of accuracy has been demonstrated for batch grinding scale-up (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1980; Austin, 1973; and Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976) and for continuous grinding scale-up (Herbst, et a1., 1976; Herbst, Rajamani and Sanchez, 1982; and Herbst, Rajamani and Lo, 1982) in commercial mills up to 14.5 x 32 feet. A procedure which has been proposed for commercial mill design using the population balance approach and specific power information is shown in Figure 1 (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1980). Here batch grinding data (size distributions for various energy inputs) obtained in a small batch mill is input to an estimation program which determines the "best" set of breakage rate parameters from the data provided. In turn, these breakage rate parameters are input to a scale-up program along with traditional inputs such as: a) desired circuit throughput and product size b) circuit operating conditions including fraction of critical speed and fractional ball load, size distribution and % solids in feed and circulating load (if closed circuit). In addition, since the population balance approach relies on more detailed models of the grinding circuit sub- processes than the classical design methods do, it is necessary to provide input to the scale-up program on the nature of material transport through the mill (e.g. residence time distribution information) and classifier performance characteristics (e .g. selectivity functions). The scale-up program will make the design calculations including the selection of mill dimensions and drive requirements, will predict product size distributions throughout the commercial circuit and will provide information on the sensitivity of the design to errors in the design assumptions. In order to implement such a scale- up scheme it is necessary to have a computer program for parameter estimation and a program for scale-up prediction. A program which is suitable for parameter estimation, ESTIMILL, has been developed and tested on a wide variety of ores at the University of Utah. This program has been in use in

. There seems to be a well-established belief that there is an indescribable something in the appearance of gold-quartz not to be learned from books, that enables those who are fortunate enough to have acquired the power to recognize this characteristic, to pronounce at once that a certain quartz will or will not pay. The stronger this claim is made, the more certain is the claimant to be one of the self-styled practical miners. After several years spent among the gold-mines of California with practical and professional gold-miners, I have come to the conclusion that very few care to risk an opinion on a piece of quartz until some of it has been "horned out." Nevertheless, there is what the miners call a " kindly " appearance, that is more often followed by good results than is a vitreous, water-wet-looking quartz. A dark, resinous quartz seems to be most in favor, but there are so many exceptions that even quartz as " white as a hound's tooth " produces gold in some mines.. The ribbon-quartz, a laminated variety, separated by thin talc or chlorite partings, has a well-known good name. The slides of rich quartz specimens show that this parallelism is a microscopical characteristic of the only macroscopical distinction that, as a rule, these quartzes show. This is shown by Nos. 12 and 13, photographs of the richest quartz, that averaged $65 per pound. It is noticeable, also, in Nos. 7 and 9, and others. Dr. Hensoldt, of Columbia College, who prepared, excellently, a large number of my slides, and whom I have to thank for descriptions and suggestions, says of Nos. 12 and 13: "This variety of quartz differs considerably, microscopically, from the others of your locality, and is, in more than one respect, remarkable. The basic principles and assumptions involved in D. L. White's solution5 for ultrasonic wave amplification in piezoelectric semiconductors are summarized. If the gain per unit length is maximized at each frequency without regard to the drift-field power density, the gain increases linearly with frequency. Therefore it would seem that very high gain is possible for frequencies in the hundreds of megacycles. However, with present materials the resulting drift-field power density is so large that cooling would be a major problem. For this reason it is more realistic to judge the capabilities of an ultrasonic amplifier in terms of the gain that is possible with a specified power density. In this case the gain at high frequencies does not increase but decreases more rapidly than l/f. The calculation of the gain us frequency at a fixed power level involves the repeated solution of a cubic equation and is therefore tedious. For the purpose of comparing different materials, sufficient accuracy can be obtained from an approximate solution which may easily be plotted as three straight lines on logarithmic graph paper. This method is used to compare the Performances of CdS, CdSe, ZnO, and GaAs. At a power density of 10 watts per cu cm, the first three give maximum gains of 60 to 80 db per cm in the vicinity of 60 megacycles. At the same power density, GaAs has a maximum gain of about 7 db per cm near 150 megacycles. Although an increase in mobility usually increases the gain for a specified power density, it is shown that there is an optimum mobility above which the gain decreases. An approximate expression for the optimum mobility is established. It is well-known that the interaction between charged particles and an electromagnetic wave can be used to amplify the electromagnetic wave. In the conventional traveling-wave tube, electrons in a vacuum are caused to move at a velocity slightly greater than the wave velocity, thereby coupling energy into the wave.' In principle, the same effect would be evident in a solid except that repeated collisions prevent the electrons from attaining a velocity greater than that of an electromagnetic wave. However, the drift velocity of electrons can be made to exceed the velocity of an acoustic wave in a solid. In 1956, weinreich2 noted that the deformation potential provided one means of coupling energy from drifting electrons into an acoustic wave, but the effect was too small to be of any practical importance. It was not until 1961 that White and Hutson demonstrated that the piezoelectric effect provided a strong enough coupling to give appreciable amplification of an ultrasonic wave and awakened wide interest in electron-phonon interactions. Qualitatively the effect may be described as follows. An acoustic wave propagating through a piezoelectric material is accompanied by an electric-field wave. If the vibrations are properly oriented with respect to the crystal axes of a piezoelectric semiconductor, the local electric fields are axially directed and cause bunching of the charged carriers. If the drift velocity of these carriers is less than the velocity of sound, they tend to be dragged along by the acoustic wave. This electroacoustic effect results in a net potential appearing across the material and in attenuation of the acoustic wave. On the other hand, if the drift velocity exceeds the velocity of sound, energy is coupled from the carriers to the acoustic wave and amplification results. Related effects which are being investigated include ultrasonic amplification in semimetals6-' and semi-conductor, and current saturation in piezoelectric semiconductors.'4-17 There are various problems which hinder the immediate application of ultrasonic amplification in a practical device. First, there are the traditional problems encountered in the design of acoustic delay lines: attenuation in the electromechanical transducers, reflected waves (which can lead to self-oscillation in an amplifying device), mechanical tolerances necessary to maintain phase coherence, and so forth. Second, there is the problem of selecting the best material from among the various piezoelectric semiconductors as they become available in single-crystal form with a wide choice of characteristics. This paper presents geological data regarding deposits of over 7,500,000 tons of fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue. A series of pyroclastics and arkoses was intruded by sills of quartz porphyry in connection with batholithic intrusions of granite 3 miles from Buchans. Gentle folding, with fracturing and shearing of tuff beds and intruded quartz porphyry, accompanied and followed the intrusion of granite and porphyry. The sulphide-barite mineralization is localized primarily in fractured and sheared tuff beds, but also in the sheared quartz porphyry. Two structures have proved particularly favorable for mineralization—one, the center of an anticline; the other, a series of weak, incompetent tuff beds intruded by thin sills of quartz porphyry and located between strong beds of arkose. During the folding the weak tuff with intruded quartz porphyry was intensely sheared and contorted and subsequently mineralized by sulphides and barite. Introduction Buchans is 5 miles north of Red Indian Lake, in Central Newfoundland, at an elevation of 900 ft. above sea level and 400 ft. above Red Indian Lake, and is reached by a 37-mile private railway from Miller-town Junction. The first ore body found at Buchans was discovered some 30 years ago in the bed of Buchans River, by Matty Mitchell, an Indian woodsman employed by the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co. Ltd. In the years following the discovery the ore was developed by shaft-sinking and drifting, with results indicating a lenticular ore body in a shear zone, containing about 100,000 tons of extremely fine-grained sulphide ore in barite gangue averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn. Because a profitable metallurgical treatment for the ore was not found, the mine was closed down in 1911. In 1915, Mr. H. A. Guess, Vice President of the American Smelting & Refining Co., learned of the Buchans River ore body, and after metallurgical tests had been carried on from time to time in his company's testing plant a satisfactory separation of the sulphides by selective flotation was finally effected in 1925. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Because of this limited success, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. As a result of these calculations, it was concluded that autoradiograPhy is a rather insensitive technique to measure grain boundary segregation. The range (energies) of the emitted particles (ß and a) must be low, and the concentration of the radioactive speczes at the grain boundary must be (in general) two or three orders of magnitude greater than the concentration within the grain. Because of these very restricted conditions , the limited success of the technzque is not surprising. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Sulfur segregation in iron1 and possibly polonium segregation in Pb-5 pct B1 2 alloys are the only autoradi-ography experiments that have demonstrated segregation to grain boundaries in metals without the formation of a second phase. Segregation to a boundary without the formation of a second phase is often called Gibbs' absorption and is discussed by McLean in Chapter 5 of Ref. 10. There are several394 experiments showing grain boundary diffusion of a radioisotope, but this type experiment is not representative of equilibrium between the concentration of an element at a grain boundary and that in bulk, so it will not be discussed in this paper. In an attempt to determine if temper embrittle ment of low-alloy steels was associated with segregation of antimony to grain boundaries, a program to use auto-radiography (using Sb-125) was initiated. Even though other measurements strongly suggest that segregation is occurring during embrittlement, no evidence of grain boundary segregation was observed in the auto-radiography experiments. An attempt was also made to detect segregation of carbon (using C-14) to grain boundaries in iron during slow cooling. There is again strong indirect evidence7 that segregation occurs during such a treatment, but the autoradiography experiment gave no evidence of such segregation. Because of the failure of these experiments and the general lack of success by our metallographic unit in measuring grain boundary segregation using autoradi-ography, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. MODEL SYSTEM The model system is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It is a semi-infinite bicrystal with a single grain boundary perpendicular to the top face. The width of the grain boundary, W, is defined as the region to which segregation has occurred and it is assumed that this region is of constant composition. The assumption of an infinite dimension is for mathematical reasons but the results of such an analysis (as will be demonstrated later) are valid for even very small specimens. It also is assumed that the measurement is not limited by means of detecting the radiation (photographic emulsions, counters, and so forth) but that the means of detecting radiation is linearly sensitive to the radiation and has infinite resolving power. The distance y is the perpendicular distance from the center of the grain boundary to the point at which the background radiation is measured and x is the integration variable. CALCULATION FOR BETA PARTICLES Two values of the intensity of radiation will be calculated, the intensity at the center of the grain boundary and the intensity far from the grain boundary. The radiation at the center of the grain boundary can be calculated in the following way. Assume a grain boundary of width W having a uniform concentration equal to Cgb + Cb where CGb is the excess concentration of the element under consideration at the grain boundary and Cb is the bulk concentration. The intensity of radiation, IgB, at the center of the grain boundary, is a consequence of the amount of radioactive material, decay rate, absorption, and geometrical factors which can be represented mathematically by the following expression:

The Snoek peak induced by solute nitrogen in chromium was studied. A rapid quenching rate is required to maintain nitvogen in solution in sufficient concentrations to be detectable by internal-friction techniques. An expression for the tertninal solubility, c, of nitrogen in weight pevcent is log,,c = -4130/T + 1.05. The diffusion of nitrogen in zhromium determined by internal friction is SNOEK&apos;S theory1 of the stress-induced ordering of interstitial solute elements in the bcc lattice has been used to deduce information on the behavior of interstitials in a number of bcc metals. Under the proper conditions, internal-friction studies of "Snoek peaks" permit a determination of diffu-sivities, solubilities, and precipitation kinetics of interstitial elements. Internal-friction studies of this type have been reviewed by Nowick,&apos; Wert,= Powers and Doyle,4 and others. The behavior of interstitial atoms in Group V-A metals and iron has been rather extensively studied in this way, and results are reasonably self-consistent. However, the study of interstitial elements using internal friction in the Group VI-A metals—tungsten, molybdenum, and chromium—is much less clear. Thus far, internal-friction studies have revealed a peak in tungsten tentatively attributed to carbon5 and a peak in chromium associated with nitrogen. In chromium, Bungardt and Preisendanz6 observed a peak at 180°C for a frequency of -1 cps which they associated with nitrogen. More recently, de Morton7 determined the diffusivity of nitrogen in chromium from studies of a nitrogen peak at 160°c for a frequency of -1 cps and from elastic aftereffect measurements. The objective of this investigation was to study the nitrogen peak in greater detail, to obtain information on the behavior of nitrogen in chromium. This information is of interest because nitrogen is known to have an embrittling effect on chromium. However, efforts to deduce the role played by nitrogen in influencing the mechanical behavior of chromium are handicapped by lack of information on its behavior and distribution in chromium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The chromium wires used in these studies were drawn from arc-melted iodide-chromium stock that had been extruded, swaged, and centerless-ground to 0.25 in.-diameter rods. Internal-friction measurements were made in an evacuated torsional pendulum similar to the one described by Kê,8 utilizing wires 0.048 to 0.030 in. in diameter. A series of analyses of the fabricated wires showed that the major impurities were approximately 100 ppm Fe and a combined interstitial content of 50 to 100 ppm C, O, N, and H. A typical interstitial analysis of the wires after processing is 15 ppm C, 2 ppm H, 50 ppm O, and < 5 ppm N. Interstitial concentrations were determined by vacuum-fusion, combustion-conductimetric, and micro-Kjeldahl analyses. In general, vacuum-fusion analysis yielded a lower nitrogen concentration than did micro-Kjeldahl analysis. For consistency, the nitrogen concentrations reported in this investigation were determined by the former method. Heat treatments were carried out by encapsulating the specimens in quartz tubes containing argon. The fabricated wires were annealed at 1150°C for 1 hr to produce uniform recrystallized grain size of about 0.015 mm. Nitrogen and carbon were added to the fabricated wires by encapsulating them in a quartz tube containing ammonia or methane, and annealing them at 1150°C for 48 hr. In some instances, carbon was also introduced by coating the wires with carbon black prior to annealing.
