Researchers from the U.S. Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed field trials during coal mine rescue contests using simulated gas detectors in place of placards. The gas monitor simulator (GMS) devices replaced static, paper placards to deliver gas concentration data. Eleven teams were observed during the field contest, which was approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). GMS devices were given to three team members (the captain and both gasmen). Observation of teams revealed that team members changed behavior by acknowledging and sharing information more often while using the GMS. As a result of this research, it has been demonstrated that under the existing contest format, the newly developed GMS device may be used with no adverse impact on team contest performance. Furthermore, when GMS technology advantages are used, contest realism is improved. In the future, competency assessment may be incorporated.

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on their mine plans. Incorporating changes such as commodity prices, customer sales, fluctuating cost assumptions and newly acquired geologic data requires quick turnaround for model building and planning to keep mine plans on pace with changes as they occur. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. To meet these challenges, one leading North American mining company successfully increased the frequency rate and accuracy of its mine plans to stay current with incoming data, ensuring its mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. The Narragansett Bay Commission Phase III CSO Program includes construction of the 11,600-foot long, 30-foot ID, deep rock Pawtucket Tunnel in Rhode Island. This paper provides an overview of the Design Build Project features and highlight some of the important design considerations, features, and innovations, including geologic conditions and related TBM design, and deep shaft and tunnel segment designs. The paper provides the most recent updates on some of the project construction activities including TBM tunnel progress and retrieval schemes, tunnel pump station and deep vertical shaft liner installations, SEM construction, and microtunneling for the longest adit using Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar pipes.

In connection with Project Payette, which is concerned with the detection of underground nuclear explosions, it was necessary to determine the technical feasibility of constructing and maintaining a large (approximately 315 feet in diameter) unsupported underground cavity at a depth of approximately 2700 feet in the Tatum Salt Dome in Mississippi. The dimensions and the location of the cavity in the salt dome were governed by criteria laid down by the Atomic Energy Commission. Within the framework of the specified criteria, cavities of various shapes and dimensions could be utilized. One aspect of the feasibility study was to investigate the structural stability of various cavity shapes and to recommend a preferred shape. This paper summarizes the studies that were conducted to evaluate the structural stability of various proposed cavities.(l)

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

This paper presents research on the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment used in surface coal mining. Environmental impact was assessed through the measurement of equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. In this study, exhaust emission refers to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation refers to fine particles (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10) and total suspended particulate matter (TSP). Sound level refers to the sound pressure level at different distances from the equipment. Modeling of the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment was conducted using the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research was a part of a broader project involving the development of a software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and ecofriendly mining systems, sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). This research may assist mining professionals in quantifying the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment, and developing strategies for reducing the overall impact of such equipment in surface mining.

Santa Rosa is a mid-Tertiary, volcanic-hosted, bulk-mineable, open-pitable, heap-leachable, gold-silver deposit. It is the product of hydrothermal mineralization along an arcuate segment of a caldera collapse ring fault in a probable maar volcanic setting. This segment was later broken by radial faults. Gold occurs principally as electrum finely disseminated through intermediate tuffs, and associated with pyrite, at Santa Rosa. The nearby Alto de la Mina deposit displays stockwork silica-pyrite-gold in a tectonically and hydrothermally shattered andesite flow. Miocene epithermal mineralization was accompanied by central silicification and pyritization and more distal argillization. An andesite flow cap rock at Santa Rosa played a pivotal role as an upward permeability barrier. Highest gold grades and most intense alteration occur closest to the ring faults and immediately beneath the andesite flow. Supergene alteration effects on the gold distribution are minimal.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel (PTST) project is a part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge- Tunnel (CBBT) complex. The project involves the construction of a two-lane bored tunnel under the Thimble Shoal Channel between Portal Island #1 (the southernmost island) and Portal Island #2. The new PTST will be the rst transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region by a tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper describes the design and construction of the tunnel approach structure in an open marine environment with the strategies employed to overcome the various construction challenges. The project is unique since the entire tunnel approach structure is built on a very limited area within an open marine environment without any reclamation of the existing island.

Iron solubility&apos;s in spent pickling (HFHNO3 -H2O) solutions were determined as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations. A chemical analysis of the industrial pickling solutions and sludges was performed. The stable phases observed in the sludges are FeF3.3H2O and (FeCr)F3.3H20. Pure Fe metal, AISI 316 stainless steel and AISI 416 stainless steel were used in this study. The results show, that the solubility of Fe increased as the concentrations of HF increased in the pickling solution at a fixed concentration of HNO3. A reasonable agreement between the experimental solubility data and the theoretical calculated data was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the solid solubility product formed in the ternary solution containing pure Fe is mainly, at a high pH value, FeO(OH) compounds and, at a low pH value, Fe F3.3H2O compounds.

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970&apos;s. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

"The mining industry has always faced the problems of replacing retired mining professionals, retaining their knowledge, continuously developing the skills of local talent and employing under-represented groups. In expansionary scenarios the industry faces the additional challenge of increasing available talent. New talent has traditionally come from current mining programs; however, these programs have been declining in numbers, and those that remain face challenges such as fluctuating enrollments, and reduced budgets. Queen’s University and Northern College have partnered to develop an innovative new program that offers online mining education to engineering technologists seeking to upgrade their skills and obtain a Bachelor’s degree. The high quality, flexible curriculum, offered online, includes a wide range of learning activities that promote interaction (student-to-student, student-to-instructor, and student-to-content), and is enabled by modern learning technologies (an integrated learning platform, as well as a variety of types of purpose-built video, web conferencing, and simulation software). The program issues block transfer credit to college graduates, and consequently reduces the time to completion when compared to other Bachelor’s degrees in Mining. The curriculum has been carefully designed to enhance a balance of technical, managerial, and societal skills for students. The program also includes short summer field school sessions, where students gain practical application skills under the direct supervision of engineering experts. THE NEEDS OF INDUSTRY Canada is the world’s largest exporter of minerals, and the contribution of this sector to Canada’s gross national product is more than three times that of the automotive industry, representing approximately 4% of Canadian GDP (MiHR, 2015)1. According to a recent report by the Canadian Mining Industry Resources Council (MiHR, 2016)2, despite the recent downturn in commodity prices, the industry will continuously need to attract new engineers to replace talent retirements and prepare for the possibility of expansion when the industry recovers. As past experience indicates, the challenges during expansion times are severe and the effects on education counter-productive. For example, during the prolonged expansion cycle of 2006-2012, several new programs were started worldwide, and mining became the profession of choice for many young students. During the subsequent downturn in the industry, many of these programs face dwindling enrollments, placing their sustainability in question. However, there is a continual need by industry to retain employees, as well as attract and train local talent, while providing educational opportunities to its employees. High potential college graduates can find themselves reaching a ceiling in their advancement due to their lack of a University degree. Furthermore, there exists an under representation of women, immigrants, and Aboriginal peoples in the labour force, and engineering fields in general1,2. Traditional mining engineering programs have tried to respond to the needs of industry, as well as meet the needs of students seeking diverse and successful employment careers. These programs tend to cater to the educational needs and aspirations of a general population, and their ability to grow and respond to changing industry needs is constrained by the number of students they can attract, as well as the resources available to them in a steady-state scenario."

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies depending upon structural homogeneity, porosity and gangue quantity. Especially sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favours disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

A modular computer program APEX (AMAX Process Evaluation Executive), has been developed at AMAX Extractive R&D, Golden, Colorado to facilitate rapid simulation of steady state material and energy balances of existing and/or proposed metallurgical process flowsheets. Currently, APEX is being used for the design, analysis, and evaluation of several of AMAX?s Nickel, Molybdenumand Tungsten processes. A unique feature of APEX is that it allows specifications of flow rates and compositions for different solid size fractions in addition to aqueous organic and gaseous phases. Thus, a metallurgical process which may involve crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, washing, solvent extraction, precitation and refining operations can be simulated in a single computer run using APEX. APEX requires two input data files. The first is a process data file which includes physical and thermodynamic properties of the various chemical components of interest. This data file is unique to the process under study and does not require changes for alterations in the process flowsheet. The second data file is specific to a simulation case and includes descriptions of the flowsheet, various feed streams and the process equipment&apos;s operating conditions. In addition to temperature, pressure and percent solids, calculated information for each stream includes weight and volumetric flow rates, chemical compositions, specific gravities and enthalpies of solid, liquid and gas phases. For each process equipment in the flowsheet, APEX prints its operating conditions and detailed information about the streams that enter and leave the unit. Models of several general unit operations are preprogrammed in APEX. Also, the modular design of APEX permits quick and easy additions of simulation models which are specific to new and/or unique process operations. To study process stability and optimization, APEX permits several cases of a flow-sheet to be run together. Three simulations of the Moa Bay Nickel process have been excluded to illustrate the ease and flexibility of using the APEX system.

The Expanded West Pit of the 15 MTY El Cerrejon Mine will reach a maximum depth of270 m. Slope stability evaluations indicated that this depth, combined with structural complexities, would create a serious risk of footwall instability. Stabilization call for anchoring the footwall by installation of cable bolts, 9 to 33 m long, of multi-strand steel cable. For each of the 15 m high mining benches, a row of bolts is installed with variable horizontal spacing, depending on dip magnitude. Cable bolting is now standard operating practice and 11800 bolts will have been installed during the life of the mine.
