Pre-blast surveys are often conducted solely to document existing structural conditions and uncover potential problem areas. This paper presents a case history where the pre-blast survey was also used as a vehicle to initiate a public relations program with the occupants of a large apartment complex adjacent to a major excavation site. The public relations program, in conjunction with good blasting practices, succeeded in keeping complaints to a minimum. The presentation includes an overview of the project, details of the public relations program, some of the blasting methods that were utilized and a recap of the complaints received.

Of the various methods used to reduce the density of emulsion explosives prior to detonation; ammonium nitrate prill addition, glass micro-balloon addition and chemical gassing, chemical gassing is the method most often selected by emulsion explosive end users. Chemically gassing emulsions costs less than adding micro-balloons and chemically gassed emulsions have better water resistance than emulsions that add ammonium nitrate prills to reduce the bulk density. Unfortunately, the chemical gassing of emulsion explosives can be intricate and is often more art than a science. To gain a better understanding of chemical gassing, we investigated the factors that may affect the chemical gassing of emulsion explosives. Variables investigated as having an effect on gassing were the pH of the oxidizer phase, the amount and type of nitrogen in the emulsifier, the composition of the oxidizer phase, the use of pH buffers in the oxidizer phase, and how the gassing reagents are added to the emulsion.

This paper describes the application and results of a more efficient method of breaking boulders using dynamite and water. This method is being used for the disposal of boulders that result from pinnacle and cap rock remaining after blasting on highways and job sites. This method is a faster and less expensive use of dynamite to reduce oversized boulders than the conventional rock hammer. The problem with excessive fly rock has been substantially reduced when using this technique over traditional methods.

Recovery of contaminated groundwater in a fractured bedrock system presents some unique problems. Typically, the most common problem occurs from the inability to adequately characterize the discrete fractures through which contaminants may be migrating. Without adequate characterization, difficulties arise in properly positioning recovery wells and verifying the performance of the system. To overcome these difficulties at a site in Upstate New York, an innovative approach was developed involving the creation of an artificial fracture zone through controlled blasting to intercept contaminated groundwater flow.

In this paper, the author points out the need to beware of simple time correlations as proof of cause and effect when comparing building cracks and blasting operations. There is a need to be aware of the many other causes besides blasting which affect buildings. Some of these have histories of cyclic behavior; others have a long-term increasing effect on aging and deterioration, often with poorly defined time histories. Many are so strongly site specific that generic relationships are difficult to quantify.

As part of an accident investigation ANFO was subjected to various abusive tests. A tractor-trailer carrying 18,000 kg of blasting explosives, caught fire, burned for approximately 30 minutes, and then detonated. A series of tests was designed to observe the behaviour of ANFO when subjected to different thermal stimulus tests and more specifically, the Height-to-Detonation Test. Three diameters of steel pipes were used in the Height-to-Detonation Tests thereby simulating cylindrical columns within a pile of ANFO. The ANFO samples were then subjected to various thermal stimuli to initiate a reaction. Through the use of some instrumentation, the response of large ANFO samples was recorded and its behaviour, including the occurrence of phase changes will be analysed.

Blast damage in open stope mining has been an important concern in controlling ore dilution. Severe damage to the surrounding rock mass can result in the caving of waste rock and/or backfill materials, as well as general instability of the ground. The blast damage study conducted at Kidd Mining Division in 1995 was aimed at measuring the damage zone around blastholes and at identifying other factors which influence the damage. An approach and methodology developed mainly by Blastronics, together with Noranda under a project with the Mining Research Directorate, was adopted for this project. The principle was to combine vibration measurement results with borehole camera observations to derive the blast damage criteria at the specific site. The Holmberg-Persson Equation was used for the regression of near-field vibration data. The damage criteria was examined with both borehole camera observation results and rock elastic and mechanical properties. Details of this methodology, including instrumentation, are reviewed in this paper and an implementation case study of the blast damage evaluation is presented.

Backbreak behind the last row of boreholes can be a significant problem for blasting operations. Backbreak will interfere with the proper drilling and execution of the subsequent shot and can produce well defined boulders, which will not be broken by the subsequent shot. In order to determine the effect of timing on backbreak, a full scale blast with 6 1/2 inch boreholes was used to test the effects of timing. The test site was a quarry which had suffered from severe backbreak regardless of the blasting pattern or explosive used. One half of the production blast was loaded and initiated using the current technology at the quarry, the other half of the blast was deliberately timed in such a manner as to minimize backbreak. The timing was such to allow for ground movement in one row before the subsequent row fired. The test results proved that the amount of backbreak and flyrock could definitely be controlled with the selection of the proper borehole timing.

The recently performed study represents realistic and modern pipeline blasting techniques combined with modern data acquisition. The evaluation compares measured PPV and strain, as well as calculated stress, at equivalent scaled distances.

Pre-blast surveys are used to document the condition of a structure prior to the commencement of blasting activities. They provide the best means of determining the pre-existence of visible cracking and deterioration in a structure before blasting is initiated. A small investment in a good pre-blast survey, coupled with good public relations, could mean a large cost savings for a company in the future.

Lowering of quarry energy consumption participates to answer both environmental and financial issues. The “EE-Quarry” European project, supported by the European Commission (EE stands for Energy Efficient), develops a new and highly effective modelling and monitoring Energy Management System technique to improve Energy Efficiency and move to a low CO2 emission rate in the nonmetallic mineral industry. Within this global quarry project, blast design, as the first link in the chain, has to be optimized in order to satisfy requirements of downstream operations. The authors have been developing and implementing an operational methodology using continuous field measurements and field adaptation methods for blast design. It drives the drilling and blasting work, aiming at a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation. Based upon actual local conditions (rock-mass assessment, face geometry, borehole deviations, etc.), blast patterns are optimized through a specific hole-by-hole blast design software. It provides a better and more consistent energy distribution, to achieve a better rock fragmentation, while avoiding explosive overconsumption. The software also calculates total energy inputs and the drilling and blasting contribution to Greenhouse Effect. Coupled with methodical fieldwork and variable density explosives, it has been leading to a real reduction in energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. As the project is now reaching its final stage, demonstrations were conducted in various quarries around Europe. Several simulations were carried out and compared to the site data, in order to propose enhancements for the different phases (extraction, loading, hauling, crushing and transport) while bearing in mind the environmental impact of the quarry. This blasting methodology allows to assess the carbon footprint of drilling and blasting in conjunction with the downstream operations, thus to evaluate the global carbon footprint of quarrying. A typical rural house surrounded by a surface coal mine was instrumented in 2008. Information regarding ground vibration, airblast, and sounds inside the house was collected. Previous publications have included conclusions about this data with regard to blasting source (far-field or near-field) and results as to how the residents experience the blast were made. Several events were also recorded that were not related to blasting due to the nature of the trigger system. The trigger of the monitoring system was attached to one of the mid walls of the house, thus other normal daily events produced vibration levels significant enough to trigger the monitoring system.

This technical work was carried out in an open pit copper mining unit, located in central Peru, which has a daily production of 440 thousand tons per day. Currently the pit consists of three mining phases, however, in phase 05 north, there is the construction of a shaft with a height of 375 meters, the function of this structure is to collect and drain the water coming from the pit, there is the importance of preserving its stability and keeping it operational, guaranteeing the sustainability of the operation. For this, a controlled blasting plan was developed that goes from level 4530 to level 4455 to place the central well on a bench, reactivating the pools.

The emission of particulate material is one of the several parameters related to environmental control in mining operations near communities. Blasting is an event that generates and leaves a large amount of dust in suspension, which can cause discomfort to communities, generating complaints that can compromise the operational continuity of the mine. The proper management of these environmental impacts is a key factor to ensure a good relationship with the neighborhoods, making a responsible mining in harmony with the environment, giving sustainability to the mining business in the medium and long term. The main goal of this work is to present different techniques and technologies applied in a large-scale open pit mine in Brazil, with operations close to a community, to minimize the emissions of particulate material into the atmosphere. For this, different technical solutions were implemented. First, a non-conventional blasting technique was introduced that incorporates special charging and timing configurations, generating a first upper layer that serves as a blanket to contain a second, higher-energy lower layer. An optimal stemming was also defined in order to minimize ejections and maximize cratering, using the scaled depth of burial theory as well as video and fragmentation analysis. In addition, changes were made in the timing between decks (to guarantee a minimum time between layers) and between holes (changing the initiation point opposite to the free face). Finally, additional measures such as humidification of the bench, use of a wind vane to identify wind direction and the construction of a physical barrier between the mine and the community were implemented as additional mitigation measures. By applying the above techniques together, in some specific zones of the mine, it was possible to considerably reduce the ejections generated by blasting versus conventional blasting without the above measures, which was demonstrated in the field with dual blasts trials. Additionally, it was possible to achieve a vibration reduction in the community of ~30%. This work demonstrates how, by applying these technical solutions, it was possible to minimize the dust and vibrations generated by blasting allowing this operation to do sustainable mining

A monitoring campaign to record dynamic pressures generated by detonation of a single blasthole was implemented at Barrick Gold´s Pueblo Viejo Open Pit mine (PVDC), located in the Dominican Republic . Pressure amplitudes beyond the dynamic compressive strength of the electronic detonator´s capsules have the potential to damage these electronic devices, generating misfires along with all the associated risks and entailed safety implications. In most instances, misfires generated from high dynamic pressures are a direct consequence of drilling deviations resulting in blasthole distances smaller than originally designed.

The A5 road in the United Kingdom forms an ancient and well-used route through the hills and mountains of North Wales. In the 1990?s a programme of work was conducted to upgrade the road to modern standards. As part of this work a new cutting was constructed to bypass a portion of road routed through a gorge close to the village of Ty Nant. This new cutting was formed by drilling and blasting and included much pre-splitting and extensive rock bolting. This operation caused much concern to local residents relating to vibration, air overpressure and flyrock.
