"Case 2. 100th Street Bus Depot: Elimination of Deep Caissons in Favor of Spread FootingsThe PROJECTThe 100th Street Bus Depot is a new five-story bus terminal for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority occupying one city block in Manhattan between 99th and 100th Streets, and between Lexington and Park Avenues. It replaces a former two-story garage, built in the 1890’s and initially used as a trolley-car barn. The new structure is a steelframed building with concrete floors and includes a partial basement near its middle. The easternmost column line with design loads of 10 MN (1,125 tons) is within 1.5 m of the underlying multi-tube Lexington Avenue subway system. To support the new columns along the subway line, the project bid plans had called for 1 m diameter and 17 m deep drilled shafts. The upper 14 m of each unit would have required 50 mm separation from the surrounding rock to prevent stress from being imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel. The column loads were thus transferred to below the base of the tunnel and supported by 3 m long sockets in bedrock. The bid documents contained extensive test boring information, which revealed that the project site was underlain by massive Manhattan Mica Schist bedrock within just 3 m below street level. In fact, the Lexington Avenue two-level and multi-tube subway had been tunneled through this rock circa 1910, leaving an about 6 m thick solid roof over the upper-level subway. The NX rock core recovery values were near 100 %, with average RQD of 75 %.The CHANGEThe Bus Depot project was let as a design/build contract with a very aggressive fast-track schedule. Both the pre-bid preliminary design and the subsequent final design by the Contractor’s own hired design engineers relied heavily on very restrictive codes, including unnecessarily conservative approaches to seismic design. Any suggestion for value engineering change was undesirable and was strongly resisted. Yet, objecting against the blind reliance on codes in foundation design, the author questioned the real need for the deep drilled shafts to support the columns along the subway. The unsupported statement that no stresses from the new structure can be imposed on the roof and walls of the adjacent tunnel was not sufficient reason for the drilled-shaft design. Unconvinced that deep shafts were necessary, the author rushed to MTA’s warehouse where many rows of rock core boxes were neatly stacked. Careful inspection and some simple testing of the rock cores with the blows of a geologic hammer gave support to the reservations about the design. Later, as expected, the schist bedrock at this site was found to be hard to very hard with unconfined compressive strength values estimated to range from at least 70 MPa to over 100 MPa (10,000 psi to 15,000 psi). The tensile strength of the rock was assessed to be minimum 5 MPa (750 psi)."

Between 2008 and 2009, more than 6,000, 23-m long deep mixing method (DMM) elements were constructed to support 124 concrete mats comprising the foundations for the process trains for an LNG facility. The Owner requested first-of-its-kind analyses and assessments to confirm the quality and reliability of the DMM foundation. This paper provides information on these assessments and the procedures used to ultimately conclude that a fit-for-purpose foundation system was constructed. During early phases of construction, several DMM test cores revealed nodules of unmixed clay in upper core samples. A comprehensive review of available DMM core information was undertaken. It was concluded that the amount of coring being conducted as part of the contractor?s QA/QC program should be increased to achieve a foundation system with the required level of reliability. Three-dimensional finite element analyses were completed considering various distributions of defects in the DMM elements and the effects of potential downdrag on DMM elements. Calculated mat settlements and mat stresses were compared to cases without defects in the DMM elements. Various distributions of loaded and unloaded mat areas and number and position (both in the subsurface and laterally) of defects were considered. Four (of the 124) mats were identified as potentially ?at-risk?. The settlement performance of these mats is currently being monitored and, to date, performance has been acceptable.

"The waveform micropile is a newly developed foundation type for increasing the bearing capacity with the created shear keys on the pile’s shaft. Analyzing the increment of resistance at the shear key zone is a crucial factor in the design of the waveform micropile. Hence, centrifuge tests were carried out employing six different models, including a waveform micropile in the axial loading condition. The analysis results of the load-settlement curves showed that the waveform micropile achieved a higher bearing capacity compared to the micropile without shear keys. In addition, the test results revealed that the load-settlement relationship was affected not only by the pile shape but also by the locations of the shear keysINTRODUCTIONA micropile is a small-diameter pile, typically constructed with a less than 300 mm diameter. Generally, the micropile’s construction involves drilling, grouting, and insertion of a reinforcement material, such as a thread bar. The micopile can be utilized in a variety of fields for reinforcing the foundations of existing structures. It also has advantages for accessing challenging areas like limited-access construction sites, including those with a low headroom space and adjacent structures, due to the small size of the construction equipment. Thus, since it was introduced in 1950 in Italy, the micropile has become one of the preferred solutions when other deep-foundation methods are not applicable to the site.Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) gives the micropile design implementation guideline of neglecting the end bearing due to its small diameter but considering the frictional resistance if the bond zone of the pile is in the soil or on a weak rock. The bearing capacity is considered primarily only if the micropile is founded on a high-quality sound rock (FHWA, 2005). Micropile design in South Korea is currently being performed based on the FHWA manual and taking into consideration the frictional resistance for the design as the pile generally sockets into a weak rock or soft rock. Moreover, the frictional resistance within the soil layer has usually been ignored, considering only the shaft resistance of the rocksocketed length in the conservative design. The design concept excluding the frictional resistance in the soil layer, however, may lead to an extension of the pile socket length, which will increase the construction cost. Hence, many researches have attempted to provide better design and construction methods to increase the bearing capacity in a cost-effective way (Juran et al. 2001; Sadek and Isam 2004; Tsukada et al. 2006; Finno 2002; Gomez et al. 2003; Seo et al. 2013)."

The technical challenges for accurate drilling positions increase with deep underground structures in inner city areas. Designed for jet grouting, specific sensors have been developed to record the alignment of rods during drilling by integrating microchips into the drilling rods. By feeding the rod with constant electric current, microchips, integrated in special couplings, can be read during the drilling process and tracked on monitors installed in the operator’s cockpit. The orientation for the drilling rod is provided by magnetic points and a compass, positioned above ground on the drilling rig. In combination with asymmetric drilling bits, it is now possible to steer the drilling hole to predetermined positions to compensate for deviations in deep bores. This type of drilling rod for jet grouting has been used in Berlin since summer 2019.

An experimental set-up is specially designed to study the behavior of a friction pile of 3 cm diameter in contact with the soft clay of Mexico City in a small calibration chamber (CC) of 30 cm diameter and 50 cm height. The consolidation of this compressible clay is accomplished using a special system adapted to the CC itself to insure a good knowledge of the initial state. Loading results of the pile under a consolidation pressure of 50 kPa indicate an elastic mobilization of shear stresses at the shaft of the pile (?3 kPa for 1mm displacement) followed by a hardening plastic type behavior. Unloading-reloading results indicate a mobilization of shear stresses of the same type and of the same order of values obtained from the virgin loading stress path. Cyclic loading (?40 cycles) between 0 and 1 kPa (1/3 of the failure value) give similar results to those obtained from virgin loading.

"Soft soil presents a challenge against multistory buildings in some cities of Egypt such as Port Said due to the consolidation settlement. Deep mixed (DM) columns are used to improve the soft foundation soil in order to reduce the total and differential settlements. Latest research revealed that this improvement technique also increases the rate of mechanical consolidation due to column yielding caused by stress concentration from the soft soil. In this study, extended poly-styrene (EPS) Geofoam is used to replace the soft soil over DM columns in order to control the stress concentration and settlement. To understand the effect of EPS geofoam on the degree of consolidation, stress concentration and settlement, a parametric study was carried out through a mechanically and hydraulically-coupled numerical method. A unit cell model is used, in which the soil was considered linear elastic; DM column and EPS Geofoam are elasticplastic materials. Results reveal that EPS geofoam is helpful for reducing the settlements and accelerating the consolidation. Increasing the length of the column of the deep mixed foundation with EPS geofoam has a significant effect on accelerating the consolidation.INTRODUCTIONExpanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam is a lightweight polymeric material which is made by expansion of raw plastic beads. The expansion of the EPS beads are spherical-shaped particles containing closed hollow cells. EPS which plays an important role as an innovative lightweight construction material is now well recognized due to its low density in addition to high compressive and rupture strength. Inglis (1996) reported the first use of EPS geofoam as a seismic buffer to reduce potential seismic loads against a nonyielding basement wall. Gaskin (2000) and Bathurst et al. (2007) carried out reduced-scale shaking table test on a rigid retaining wall protected by EPS geofoam. The test data showed that the peak lateral loads acting on compressible model walls were reduced below values measured for nominally identical structure but with no compressible inclusion. Abdelrahman and El Kamash (2014) investigated the behavior of EPS Geofoam beneath raft foundation on soft soil of Port Said. They showed the ability of EPS to control vertical displacements. The investigation of the behavior of EPS geofoam with DM column has not attracted more attention of previous researchers. In this paper, the behavior of replacing the soft soil by EPS geofoam was examined in the presence of DM column."

In the east of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a new high-rise building is planned directly next to the river Main. The high-rise building will have a height of about 75 m and will be founded on a Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF) in the tertiary marl. The new structure will be constructed next to important, sensitive traffic infrastructure. The foundation of the new high-rise building adjoins directly existing historic quay structures, which are more than 100 years old. For analysis of the stability and the serviceability of the heavily eccentric loaded foundation of the new high-rise building and the existing structures and for the investigation of the soil-structure interaction complex three dimensional, non-linear numerical simulations have been carried out. These numerical simulations take into account all geometric and material specific boundary conditions, including the history of the construction of the whole area. The paper introduces into a very complex construction project in which the investigation of the soil-structure interaction has an important role. The three-dimensional numerical simulations are explained and the results are shown.

"Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the Rio Puerto Nuevo Project in San Juan was chosen by the Corps of Engineers to improve the soils adjacent to a 90 inch forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel. The project is located just east of San Juan and south of the Horizon Port. The soils to be improved consisted of fill, marine clay, organics (peat) and the foundation clay layer. A preconstruction soil investigation campaign was performed to assess soil properties and to retrieve samples of the different soil layers for the laboratory Bench Scale Testing program (BST). The BST was conducted using various binder contents and water/cement ratios in each of the soil types; the selection of the different combinations and dosages was based on past extensive experiences on similar materials. Following the laboratory program, a full scale Field Test (FT) was done installing several DMM elements to verify the results of the BST and fine tune the construction parameters. Each element consisted of two 5.5 feet diameter overlapping mixing augers installed simultaneously to a depth of approximately 60 feet using a SOILMEC SR-90 dual axis drilling rig. The FT construction and post-construction coring results showed significant differences between the lab study and the actual field conditions. This paper will highlight these differences and the importance of performing both pre-construction laboratory and field tests in order to ascertain the proper mixing parameters in the different soil layers.IntroductionThe Puerto Nuevo project consists of the stabilization of a major drainage channel using Deep Mixing Method (DMM) and the relocation of a 90 inch forced main sanitary sewer outfall. The first portion of this project was a 40 x 16 x 2,000 foot box culvert installed in 2004. In order for the drainage system to be completed and function properly, the 90 inch forced main needed to be lowered about 20 feet to allow for proper drainage.DMM was chosen by the US Army corps of Engineers to stabilize the drainage channel as well as improve the soil under the relocated sewer main. The overall layout of the project is shown in Figure 1. The DMM is arranged in different zones (A through E) with variable top and bottom design elevations as can be seen in the typical cross section for ZONE A and B as an example. (Figure 2) The total amount of soils to be treated by DMM is approximately 84,000 cubic yards up to a maximum depth of 57 feet from ground surface and an Area Replacement Ratio of 100%.The equipment used to perform the DMM is a Soilmec SR90 twin-shaft jet assisted deep mixing rig (Figure 3) coupled with a LODOS 30 grout plant and two Soilmec 7T-500J high pressure pumps."

"Environmental control structures for an existing fossil-fuel power generating plant near Pascagoula, Mississippi faced several design and construction challenges due to space limitations. Conceptual design calculations indicated drilled shaft foundations would likely be needed to accommodate the higher lateral and compressive loads expected under some structures. A maximum drilled shaft diameter of 60-in was preferred due to various space constraints. Smaller diameter drilled shafts were deemed acceptable under structures with more moderate loading conditions. Furthermore, augercast piles were considered where lateral loading was not a governing design criterion.A series of SPT borings and CPT soundings revealed a subsurface profile consisting of soft to firm clays to depths of about 25 feet, underlain by fine to coarse sands. The apparent relative density of the sands was loose just below the clay, with increasing density noted with an increase in depth.Analysis of conventional drilled shafts indicated needed capacities could not be achieved unless shaft lengths exceeded 100 feet. Post-grouted drilled shafts were therefore evaluated to decrease shaft lengths by taking advantage of increased base capacity. Analyses showed the higher predicted capacities needed for some structures could be achieved with this approach. Final design for the project incorporated 90-ft long, 60-in diameter post-grouted drilled shafts; 60-ft long, 48-in diameter post-grouted drilled shafts; and 60-ft long, 48-in diameter conventional shafts. Both post-grouted and conventional trial shafts were installed as part of the detailed design phase of the project. Each trial shaft included CSL integrity testing and Osterberg-cell bi-directional load testing. Load test results revealed that additional base capacity was, in fact, achieved through the post grouting process. The 60-in diameter post-grouted production shafts and the 48-in diameter conventional production shafts have been installed at the site, with the project that would utilize the 48-in diameter post-grouted shafts deferred at this time."

"An innovative method of ground freezing was successfully tested to create a “dry” excavation condition for a new building foundation at a site in downtown, Miami, Florida. The subsurface conditions in Miami generally consist of very porous, weak limestone and sand with groundwater near the surface. Water flow through these materials can be very high. Dewatering is extremely restricted in Miami so deep below-grade structures are rare and expensive. A new, innovative method to allow deep excavations in dry conditions without dewatering involves the creation of a thick, temporary, frozen soil plug below the planned excavation depth across the entire site to cut off vertical groundwater flow during construction. Frozen soil is impermeable and very strong and has long been used for temporary structural and water-tight shored walls. Using the same proven principals, frozen soil plugs are very effective at cutting off water from the bottom of the excavation as well as resisting upward buoyant forces. This new freezing method can be used for fairly deep excavations in new building construction supported on deep foundations. The building piles act as temporary anchors for the frozen plug to resist very high upward buoyant pressures until the permanent structural slab is completed.IntroductionUnlike other Cities, below grade basements are rare in Miami. The few basement foundations constructed have utilized a cumbersome and expensive method of excavation and shoring involving underwater excavation, tremie slabs, and commercial divers. The key issue for underground construction in this area of the country is the vertical flow of groundwater through the base of the excavation. To deal with this issue in the past, the contractor first installed all of the building piles and the perimeter shoring walls. Then, interior sheet pile walls are installed to create small manageable excavation pits. Each pit is then excavated through standing water “in-the-blind” and around the buildings support piles. The final excavation, interior struts, and inspection is performed by commercial divers. Finally a thick foundation tremie slab is poured under water. This method could be successful but proved to be time consuming and expensive. In addition, some building piles were occasionally damaged during the under-water construction process."

Large structures, such as a multistory office building or a large storage tank, are constructed the most economical way possible, which may involve a shallow foundation system placed on native soil or compacted fill material. Over the life of the structure, the foundation system may not perform as originally anticipated, leading to differential settlement. Minor differ- ential settlement is expected; however, settlement that exceeds allotted tolerance can render the structure inoperable. Compaction grouting is a well-known and accepted ground improvement technique that can be used to not only stabilize but relevel multistory buildings and large dia- meter storage tanks. Two projects, each with differing types of structures, were successfully remediated utilizing com- paction grouting as the primary method to remedy settlement.

The Dalles Dam is located 192 miles upstream from the Columbia River?s mouth. As part of an effort to increase survival rates for young salmon migrating downstream to the Pacific Ocean, a river spillwall was constructed to guide the young salmon into the thalway and out of the reach of predators. The spillwall consisted of 43 large precast concrete cells constructed onsite. The 120-ton cells are positioned on the bedrock riverbed to form the 830-foot-long spillwall. Large capacity post-tensioned strand anchors extend through ducts in the precast units, anchoring the wall to the basalt. One hundred seventy-eight tie-down anchors consisting of 30, 32, or 40 strands were installed and post-tensioned to secure the cells. The logistic and technical challenges presented by positioning, installing, and stressing the precast cells in the tailrace of a large dam required a high level of cooperation and planning between the owner, general contractor, subcontractors, and suppliers in order to finish the project within the allotted in-water work windows to minimize impacts on seasonal salmon migration.

Pile load tests in site require extensive means of action and time. To get outstanding tests, the environmental test conditions must be perfectly known and acceptable. They concern the support installation, the loading, the access and instrumentation site conditions and the economical aspects. In particular cases as offshore areas, the load tests are not feasible. Moreover the variability of soil characteristics limits the interpretation results at the considered tested site. The use of centrifuge modellling offers an other way to study the loaded pile behaviours. Centrifuge tests lead to parametric approaches which constitute for geotechnical engineers an important data base tor recommendations and design codes. To accurately simulate pile behaviours by checking similitude laws linked to the studied problems, the installation of model-piles must be also representative of the in-situ piles. Driven piles account for a large part of the piles installed through the world, mainly for offshore or harbour constructions. So, to explore driven pile problems by centrifuge tests, miniature pile driving hammers must be developed and tested under macro-gravities. The paper describes two types of these ones in details. They are commonly used at the centrifuge centre of the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées - (LCPC) - [Réf. 1] for different deep foundations researches. Performances and limitations are given for both miniature pile drivers and some results from their use are presented to illustrate the suitability of these apparatus.

Static and STATNAMIC (STN) rapid load test (RLT) was performed on 3-drilled shafts. The purpose of the RLT part of the study was to obtain data in support of FHWA research on innovative load testing methods. The research site is located at the National Experimentation Research Site (NGES) in Amherst Massachusetts and is underlain by Connecticut valley varved clay. Two of the tested shafts were constructed without planned defects and the third with manufactured defects to evaluate current non-destructive integrity testing (NDE) methods. Quick Load Test (QLT) and Constant Rate of Penetration (CRP) static axial load tests were performed on two shafts to plunging failure. Good agreement between static and RLT derived static failure loads was attained for a 5% failure criterion (load at a movement equal to 5% of shaft diameter).

The Hillside Smelter presently under construction at Richards Bay, Republic of South Africa, will be, on completion, the fifth largest aluminium smelter in the world. The site selected for this plant is underlain by sandy soils of variable density to depths of 30m or greater. In order to firmly establish pile founding depths required for alternative pile types in the variable subsurface conditions prevailing across the site, a pre-construction test piling programme was conducted incorporating piles instrumented with resistance strain gauges. The results allowed analysis of the relative contributions of end-bearing and shaft friction to the overall bearing capacity of each pile type and permitted comparison with the predictions of conventional static bearing capacity analyses. Conformance with acceptance criteria in respect of allowable pile head movements for single piles was also examined.

"The diameter of improved columns adopted by the original DJM Method had been 1000 mm, however, in order to comply with the social need for construction cost reduction, the Expanded Dry Jet Mixing (EX-DJM) Method with maximum column diameter expanded to 1300 mm was developed between 1998 and 2001 and has been widely applied since then. From the first application of EX-DJM in January 2002 for a first construction project, the total volume of improved soil has reached 325,000 m3 in 17 projects up to September 2014. Because of the advantages of the EX-DJM such as reduction of construction costs and periods leading to reduction in the number of improved columns, adoption of this method is expected to increase in the future. This paper describes the advantages of the EX-DJM, its construction results and case examples including those applied to restoration projects after the Great East Japan Earthquake, 2011.1. BACKGROUND OF DEVELOPMENTThe Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) Method is a soil stabilization method in which a powdery or granular binder is pneumatically fed into and mixed with soft soil to induce chemical reactions that stabilize and strengthen the soil. It was developed by government - private collaboration in Japan between 1977 and 1979. Up to March 2014, the total volume of soil improved by DJM method reached 33,500,000 m3. The initial diameter of improved columns of the original DJM Method was 1000 mm. In order to comply with the social need for construction cost reduction, the Expanded Dry Jet Mixing (EX-DJM) Method with maximum column diameter 1300 mm was developed between 1998 and 2001.2. ADVANTAGES OF EX-DJMThe construction equipment for the EX-DJM consists of two major parts, which are DJM machine and binder plant are shown in Fig. 1.The construction machine is of double mixing-shaft type with its column diameter expanded to 1200mm or 1300mm. In association with the increase in the column diameter, the binder feeder has also increased its discharge rate by approximately 1.69 times. "For decades, the International Market Place (IMP) has been an icon in the heart of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was famous for Duke Kahanamoku’s restaurant where people flocked to hear Don Ho sing in the ’60s and ’70s. Later, it was a bustling, open-air hub of small vendors who peddled everything from Hawaiian souvenirs and jewelry to food court meals and farmer’s market produce. Small buildings and shacks that housed the businesses were located on a curved tract of land — just one block off the beach — that stretches from Kalakaua Avenue to Kuhio Avenue. The entrance to the complex is dominated by a huge, old (circa 1850) Banyan tree. This tract is owned by the Queen Emma Land Company. Queen Emma was a Hawaiian Queen from the 1800s. Revenue from the land has supported the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for decades.The reimagined IMP is owned by Taubman Centers, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and CoastWood Capital Group of San Francisco, Calif. The IMP will offer a distinctive collection of upscale fashion and lifestyle retailers, including Hawaii’s only Saks Fifth Avenue store, as well as ten sit-down restaurants, including concepts by award-winning chefs Michael Mina and Roy Yamaguchi. The mall features two large open-air courts, the first of which has the huge Banyan tree as its entryway centerpiece. The second open-air court, called Queen’s Court, includes a stage and mature monkeypod trees and a few palm trees. Foundation SelectionAfter a geotechnical exploration that was directed by SME, Plymouth, Mich., and performed by Geolabs, Honolulu, it was discovered that the historical site had hidden and challenging foundation conditions. The subsurface conditions included a very deep but now in-filled ancient river valley containing more than 180 ft (54.9 m) of lagoonal deposits consisting of normally consolidated plastic clayey silts and silty clays with blow counts mainly varying in N-value from 1 to 6. The silt was underlain by several soft coralline layers, some overconsolidated clays and various basalt layers. The static groundwater level on the site was at a depth of about 5 ft (1.5 m), closely matching sea level.Although driven piles had previously been used as the preferred deep foundation support for adjacent structures, this area of town is now fully developed and local noise ordinances preclude their use. Augercast piles were initially considered, but when the general contractor dck/FWF, Pittsburgh, Pa., asked for bids for the augercast piles, several foundation contractors offered alternate systems. The practical installation depth of augercast piles was limited and due to the depth of the in-filled alluvial valley, this system could likely have left soft silt below the tips of the piles over much of the site."
