"Sherritt's zinc pressure leaching process converts zinc sulphide concentrates directly to zinc sulphate solutions and elemental sulphur. Thus, one pressure process step replaces both the roasting and leaching operations of the conventional roast-leach route. In addition, high single-pass extractions eliminate the need for residue treatments to recover unleached zinc. Because pressure leaching produces elemental sulphur, rather than sulphur dioxide, acid plants and smoke stacks are not required, and air pollution control and work-place hygiene are greatly improved. .In 1977, Cominco Ltd. and Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited jointly operated a three-tonne-per-day pilot plant to demonstrate pressure oxidative leaching of Sullivan zinc concentrate and the subsequent separation of elemental sulphur. The process consisted of regrinding the concentrate, continuous leaching at 150°C at elevated oxygen pressures in a four compartment autoclave and the subsequent recovery of elemental sulphur, either in the molten liquid form from a decantation autoclave or as a flotation concentrate. Of the zinc contained in the concentrate, 97% was extracted in 90 minutes, and 96% of the sulphur was converted to the elemental form.Following the successful pilot campaign, Cominco began building the world's first commercial zinc pressure leaching plant. This plant, which was in operation by late 1980, will eventually treat about 25% of Cominco's planned zinc capacity of270,000 tonnes per year.This paper describes the general process principles, the results obtained from the pilot plant and the integration of the process into Cominco's operations at Trail. The application of pressure leaching to a ""grass-roots"" plant is also discussed, and compared with conventional roast-leaching."

"The casual visitor is not apt to think of the Adirondacks as a one-time hive of mining and manufacturing activity. However, where there are mountains there are usually minerals and northern New York State is no exception.The Adirondacks are a rocky shield, a great stone cap pulled down over what is now northern New York. The bedrock consists of layered metamorphic rocks which were once sandstones or limestones on the bottom of a shallow sea that covered the region 1000 million years ago. The highlands are composed for the most part of the igneous rock anorthosite. Ancient earth upheavals at temperatures of at least 750°C mixed molten masses of anorthosite and the minerals it contained with the older metamorphic rock, resulting in deposits of iron-titanium oxide s, red garnet and other valuable minerals. Of these, the most readily recognizable was iron.The first hint of the existence of iron ore in the Adirondack Lake Champlain region of upper New York State seems to have come from a Swedish naturalist, Peter Kalm (1716-1769), who travelled through French Canada and visited the military outpost of Fort St. Frederic in 1749. In July of that year, Kalm wrote:""Among the kinds of sand which are found on the shores of Lake Champlain; one is black and the other garnet-colored... and they sparkle when the sun shines. All the grains of this sand without exception are attracted to the magnet, the uppermost or black sand being about a quarter inch deep...""Concerned primarily with the fur trade, the officers and men who occupied this remote bastion of La Belle France were apparently unaware of the industrial and commercial possibilities beneath their feet. No deposit of iron was then known to exist any closer than the Three River s area in Lower Canada."

"A review of the major renovation of the fifty-year old C-I headframe facilities at NERCQ's Con Mine, Yellowknife, N. W.T. is provided. The project was complete with only two 3-day shutdowns of the facility .Work consisted of four major phases: structural reinforcement of the adjoining mill building prior to dismantling; relocation of virtually all mine and mill utilities which transited the headframe collar en route from the adjacent powerhouse; dismantling of the entire headframe facility and portion of the mill building, including the removal of asbestos siding; and erection of a new headframe, idler rower, collarhouse and mill wall.This paper describes the work and methods used by NERCQ, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited, Acres International Limited, and others to bring the project to a successful completion. The history of the project is discussed from the planning phase through construction, including; design, procurement, and construction scheduling. The paper discusses the unique elements of the project, the problems encountered, and the methods used to achieve success.IntroductionThe Con Mine is a 800 tpd gold operation located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Originally owned and operated by Cominco Limited , the Con Mine was sold in December 1986 to NERCO Minerals Company, and officially renamed NERCO Con Mine, Ltd. The Con Mine has been in operation for over 50 years. The first gold brick ever produced in the Northwest Territories was poured at the Con Mine in 1938. The original C-1 shaft was sunk in 1937 to a depth of 235 ft. In 1941 the shaft was deepened to a depth of 950 ft, and the original timber head frame was replaced with a steel structure. Following the discovery of the Campbell Shear in 1946, the C-l shaft was again deepened to its present depth of 2443 ft. Over the years, mine production gradually moved deeper and further from the C-l shaft."

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

"Plastic yielding and flow in metals is dependent on the microscopic process of simple shear along crystallographic planes and directions known as slip. Thus, by altering the crystallographic direction of the stress axis or placing constraints in the direction of plastic flow, anisotropy of yield strength for the same material is observed. This phenomenon is called texture strengthening. The application of this concept to highly anisotropic crystal structures such as the hexagonal group of titanium and zirconium alloys, the former in missile casing and the latter in nuclear reactor fuel tubing, seems obvious. The outstanding example in cubic structures is the case of deep-drawing steel. The R value, the width strain over the thickness strain during a tensile test, is taken as a measure of texture strengthening. In face-centred cubic structures, texture strengthening has been completely ignored on the basis that materials with R less than one are not amenable to this beneficiation. This study will review two aspects of texture which will lead to strengthening, first the thermal stability of the deformed microstructure, which is dependent on the stress axis, and second, the texture strengthening aspect of fcc metals.A review of recovery and recrystallization in textured aluminum wires, copper and cupro-nickel sheet will be presented with the view of extending these concepts to the manufacture of heat-exchanger tubing. The superior creep properties of specially processed commercial products such as TD-Ni, TD-NiCr and MAR-M200 will be shown to be a manifestation of the same physical phenomena."

"Indicator kriging is one of the non-parametric geostatistical techniques, ideal for estimating the reserves of irregular mineralizations (e.g. gold, uranium, platinum, diamonds, etc.). Such mineralizations are characterized by variograms which are very sensitive to extreme values (outliers) and very difficult to model.The classical approach to this problem in the industry is to trim off these high grades using arbitrary empirical upper limits established either from practice or subjectively. Contrary to this simplistic approach, indicator kriging discretizes the histogram of the grades (usually log normal) in several classes and carries out interpolation separately for each class. This paper gives an overview of the differences between ordinary and indicator kriging along with the steps required to carry out indicator kriging. The paper concludes with a case study involving a gold deposit estimation.IntroductionParametric geostatistics (ordinary kriging) has given us satisfactory results over the years in estimating the reserves of well behaved deposits with coefficients of variation close to 1 (e.g. sedimentary and porphyry type deposits). However, numerous problems have been encountered in estimating irregular mineralizations (e.g. small vein deposits of precious metals) with high coefficients of variation in the range of 2 to 5. Such deposits are characterized by a very small proportion of extreme values (outliers) which create distortions on the variograms (pure nugget effect) and render them useless(1,2).The solution often followed by the mining industry today is to trim off these values based on empirical limits. These limits are derived either by comparison with production results (or bulk samples) or by geological interpretations. Needless to say that such manipulations can lead to serious errors in estimating ore reserves (usually underestimation of total metal quantity), especially when production results or bulk samples are absent.On the other hand, the solution followed by the geostatisticians in the past was to smooth out the data using transforms (e.g. normal-score or natural logarithms). Such transforms are nonlinear and they required non-linear estimation techniques such as disjunctive kriging (DK) or multivariate gaussian kriging (MG) which require normal related hypotheses, not necessarily true in geology.Nonparametric geostatistics (indicator and probability kriging) have been -developed in order to handle these problems related to highly skewed distributions."

"In 1997, EIMCO Minerals installed a knowledge-based control system on one of the five primary grinding lines at Highland Valley Copper. The objective of the system is to maximise throughput without affecting circuit product size or flotation recovery. The system was commissioned in October 1997 on a SAG mill/ball mill circuit following a plant audit and upgrade of the control instrumentation.The system monitors and controls the SAG mill power, bearing pressure and recycle load by manipulating the solids feedrate, water addition and mill speed. The two ball mill and cyclone circuits are controlled through water addition at various points in the circuit as well as the number of operating cyclones.An on-line particle size analyser is used to measure the cyclone overflow quality. Models of the SAG mill charge level and overflow product size are also incorporated. A method of predicting the SAG mill power response to feedrate changes is used to lessen the effect of dead time for improved mill power control. In the future, inferred measurements of SAG feed particle size and hardness will allow changes in ore behaviour to be predicted and compensated for by the system.This paper describes the development of the project -from installation and commissioning to modifications and refinement -along with prospects for the future.BackgroundIn early 1997, EIMCO Minerals was contracted by Highland Valley Copper to install a knowledge-based or expert system control strategy on one of the five grinding lines in the mill. This was to become the start of the Advanced Control Project at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). This paper will review the progress of the Project as well as discuss the prospects for the future.Following a preliminary engineering study (or plant audit) by EIMCO in 1996, it was decided to implement an advanced control system in order to improve plant operations and increase productivity. The study suggested that such a system had a pay-back period of a few months through increased throughput without loss in flotation recovery. Highland Valley already had successfully applied higher level control through their Elsag Bailey distributed control system (DCS) and this was the next stage in process optimisation."

"Pellet quality has taken on a new dimension during the last ten years. Quality in the seventies was generally defined as adherence to certain physical and chemical specifications. Today, the talk is in terms of how the business is managed, how customer's expectations can be exceeded, not only in product quality, but in service responsiveness.Coke breeze and flux additions, lower silica levels, and improved furnace control practices have all contributed to the improvement of pellet physical and metallurgical properties. Statistical process control has provided additional insight into the parameters that affect pellet quality.Increased customer contact and product quality surveys have heightened our awareness of customer needs and also provide direction for quality improvement test work. Current work is focussed on improving reducibility and understanding the relationship between tumble, fired compression and metallurgical properties.This paper will review the Iron Ore Company of Canada's efforts during the past decade and describe some of its initiatives for the future.IntroductionThe Carol Pellet PlantThe Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Project is located in Labrador City in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland and Labrador , approximately 965 Ian northeast of Montreal. The project consists of mining facilities, beneficiation complex and a pellet plant, which began operations in 1962. The pellet plant consists of six Dravo-Lurgi straight grate machines, regrinding, filtering and balling facilities. The current capacity of the Carol pellet plant is approximately 10.5 million tonnes , while the concentrator has the capacity to produce about 18 million tonnes of concentrate.The orebody consists of specular hematite, magnetite and small quantities of limonite and goethite. The average grade of the orebody is approximately 39% iron."

"IntroductionBy the 1980s, the continuous casting process had almost replaced the ingot casting of steel in Japan, Europe and North America. While economic benefits were probably initially the prime motivator, the transition rapidly proved that continuous casting in conjunction with ladle metallurgy offered a much greater degree of process control and made possible routine steel specifications not previously available.This new technology demanded improved procedures for the quantitative addition of the required metallurgical reagents, especially as regards the more volatile or toxic elements such as calcium , boron, carbon, sulphur, lead and tellurium. The injection of a thin steel tube containing the additive into the metal bath of a ladle refining station offers the best procedure for this. In the industry this has been referred to as ""Cored Wire "".Operators using this technology find that they are faced with balancing the injection speed against the small cross section of the tube to feed the required amount of reagent within the short time span available to the operation. Large-ladle shops requiring major quantities usually resort to multiple machines and high speeds. Many machines approach a maximum feed rate of 400 m/min. Higher speeds exceed the melting rate of the system, and the ferro static buoyancy of the tube will cause it to coil up the ladle wall and possibly resurface into the slag layer, and even eject itself above the surface. Under these conditions, exact control of element recovery becomes difficult, especially with the commonest addition, calcium silicon alloy.Many experts are persuaded that the final melting position of the carrier tube has major importance in establishing consistent element yield to the bath.For instance, the vapour pressure of calcium at l500 °C is close to I bar. Reaching a melting depth sufficient to accommodate this value is considered to be critical to achieving an acceptable and reproducible yield.Many studies have elaborated semi-empirical formulae to establish the melt zone depth, connecting this value essentially to the diameter of the tube , the injection rate and the superheat of the steel. The author's experience in steelmaking could not confirm such formulae in many cases, and he set about to develop a mathematical model which would be useful in addressing this problem, taking into account the several parameters which will regulate the behaviour of a filled tube immersed in molten steel."

"Full-scale sections of three different types of Grade 483 line pipe have been evaluated extensively. The variations in chemical composition, optical microstructure, tensile properties, hardness and Charpy impact toughness with specimen orientation and location were determined. Significant variations in several properties, notably Charpy shelf energy, impact transition temperature, inclusion content and ferrite grain size, were observed for different locations in the pipes. The results indicate that current specifications call for test samples for the most conservative locations, except for impact tests. Minimum Charpy impact values generally occur at the II2-width location, which may be a more appropriate specified test location than the present I/4-width location. The anisotropy of impact toughness, and the importance of low sulphur content and inclusion shape control for adequate toughness in the transverse/rolling-direction orientation were demonstrated. The orientation of impact specimens is critical for spiral-weld pipe, and the current specification test is non-conservative in that it can give results which are two to three times higher than the minimum value for the steel.IntroductionThis report presents the results of an extensive metallurgical evaluation of three different Grade 483 line-pipe steels. The sample material came from full-scale sections of line pipe, which represented current commercial practice at the time of manufacture (1975-1977). Since then, significant improvements have been made in the manufacturers' procedures for producing skelp and pipe, and the line-pipe specifications have been revised. "Manufacturing of Jaw CrushersOriginIn 1858 Eli Whitney Blake invented the first successful mechanical rock breaker-the Blake-type jaw crusher. Blake adapted a mechanical principal, the powerful toggle linkage system used to transform rotating motion and energy into oscillating mot ion and tremendous compressive forces. Today these same principals apply and the basic Blake-type jaw crusher is one of the leading machines of its class for heavy duty primary crushing service.In 1881 Philetus W. Gates patented a design for a crusher, the forerunner of the modern gyratory crusher which dominated the field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. In 1910 the largest gyratory crushers built had 48-inch openings. However, about this time the jaw crusher came to life when the Power and Mining Machinery Co. built an even larger sized opening crusher-a giant 84-inch by 60-inch jaw crusher for a trap rock quarry in Pennsylvania. A 24-inch gyratory crusher became the ideal sized secondary machine for this size jaw. From that time on jaw crushers were looked on favourably as primary breakers and lines were brought up to date to parallel the already developed gyratory lines.FunctionMost heavy duty Blake-type jaw crushers work basically the same way. They are ruggedly designed and capable of crushing material in some cases in excess of 80, 000 p.s.i. compressive strength. They are very simple machines with few moving part s and, with the exception of replacement of renewable parts, are relatively maintenance free. It is quite common to have these machines in product ion for 20 to 30 years. The following will de scribe how these machines work. Large-diameter high-inertia flywheels which are connected to the main eccentric shaft, rotate inside a connecting rod type mechanism called a Pitman. It transforms rotating motion into vertical oscillating motion. This vertical motion is in turn transformed into reciprocating mot ion by means of a system of 2 toggles, each connected to the Pitman. The rear toggle is connected to the fixed rear head, and the front toggle is connected to the swing jaw which is hinged at the top of the crusher. With each rotation of the eccentric shaft the swing jaw opens and closes on rock which is fed into the crusher chamber, crushing the rock in a series of bites. These bites, or strokes as the y are called, usually vary between 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch at speeds of 120 to 200 strokes per minute. The reduction ratio of feed input to discharge is usually about 8 to I. Output capacities can vary from 100 tons/hour to 1200 tons/hour depending on the size of machine and its discharge opening. Horsepower requirements can vary from 75 hp to 400 hp.The entire crusher chamber is lined with replaceable 14070 manganese steel liner plates. This material is ideally suited for the job since it hardens as it wears during crusher operation. Manganese is also used in the high wear areas at each end of the toggle plates."

"Roof bolts are the primary means of roof support in underground mines in the United States. Presently, post installation loads are measured on about 10% of the expansion anchor and combination bolts by using standard torque wrenches that Unit the accuracy of the measurements to about ±30%. No system has been available for measuring the loads generated on full-column resin grouted bolts. Mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, and placed in a corrosive environment, creating obstacles for researchers trying to utilize ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. This system is being used successfully in determining loads measured on expansion anchor and combination bolting systems, examining the transfer mechanics of full-column, resin-grouted bolts, and measuring loads generated on bolts in an underground roadway support system.IntroductionMillions of roof bolts are used each year to provide structural support in underground U.S. metal, non-metal, and coal mines. Approximately 45% of the bolts used are expansion anchor, 45% are resin-assisted combination or full-column resin-grouted, and 10% are friction anchored. The effectiveness of these bolting types is dependent on a number of factors including rock density, bolt length, in situ stresses, rock properties, bolt pattern, installation tension, etc. When implementing expansion anchor and resin assisted combination bolts , installation and post-installation tension, or load, is a major determinant of support quality and subsequent behaviour of the reinforced roof. The method by which these systems carry roof loads is well understood and documented(1,2).The importance of these installation and long-term bolt tension measurements is well recognized and are required in the federal government regulations(3). A statistical sample of the bolts, lout of 4 during installation and lout of 10 inby the last open crosscut, is required to be measured using current torque wrench technology. The disadvantages of this system are the disturbance and weakening of the anchorage and limitations of accuracy to approximately ± 30%. The method by which resin-grouted bolting systems carry roof loads is much less understood, mainly because testing procedures used to evaluate point-anchor systems are not effective on resin-grouted bolts.Due to these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines designed a measurement technique that provided a highly accurate, low cost-per- bolt system that led to the development of ultrasonic pulse echo instrumentation. The original system was designed to measure the tension only on expansion anchor bolts. Recent developments and system modifications have permitted measurements on resin-assisted and full-column resin-grouted bolts. The use of these types of support systems has been increasing steadily in underground coal mines.The development of this instrumentation has provided laboratory and field results that help to explain the mechanics and relationships between the applied loads and the interaction between the grouted bolt system consisting of the bolt tendon, grout, and rock."

SIDBEC commenced detailed planning of major capital expenditures to install integrated steelmaking facilities in 1969. Today, less than IO years later, SIDBEC and its subsidiaries have completed major mining, concentrating, pelletizing, direct reduction ? electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting plants. The total cost of these projects was almost 1 billion dollars. The philosophy behind the project planning and the evolution of management control are explained. These extensive projects were undertaken during a period of exceptional inflation and a disturbed labour climate, but were nevertheless completed with only modest overruns, with good control of timetables and with exceptionally good start-up performance. Project planning, relations with consulting engineers, introduction of new technology, purchasing and field management and cost control are discussed.

"Current practice in advanced materials processing has involved the dispersion of a second-phase, commonly SiC, glass, or other non-metallic fibres/whiskers/particulates to enhance physical characteristics of the matrix. These matrices may be either ceramic or metallic but in either case it is important that the physical and chemical properties of each phase be compatible. The dispersed, finely divided second phase is often both expensive and foreign-produced and may exhibit chemical instability at elevated temperatures. Thus, it would appear that certain naturally-occurring industrial mineral fibres/whiskers/particulates might offer an attractive and low-cost alternative. Suitable candidates, such as wollastonite and sillimanite, are available in Canada and may be milled to produce particles whose shape is appropriate for this application. It is suggested that wollastonite, in particular, may be a useful modifying agent in metal matrix composites utilizing AI, Al-Si, Zn-Al or other light metals and alloys. "Tunnelling by use of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is gaining a greater presence as a suitable excavation method. Disc cutter consumption has a strong influence on performance and cost when using TBMs and the influence becomes even more relevant in hard rock. Furthermore, good predictions of TBM performance and cost facilitate the control of risk as well as avoiding delays and budget overruns. Since abrasive wear is the most common process affecting cutter consumption, good laboratory assessments are needed. A new abrasivity test method called Rolling Indentation Abrasion Test was developed. The goal of the new test design and procedure is to reproduce wear behaviour on hard rock tunnel boring in a more realistic way than traditionally used methods by introducing wear by rolling contact on intact rock samples. INTRODUCTIONHigh investments are involved in the tunnelling industry, especially in Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) projects. Performance predictions and cost estimations are crucial for planning and risk management of TBM projects. Cutter consumption has a large influence in terms of time and cost, and an even greater effect in case of hard rock projects. Many factors are influencing the amount of cutters consumed in hard rock TBMs. Normal TBM operation results mainly in abrasive wear on the cutters and appropriate methods for abrasivity assessment are needed. Rock abrasiveness cannot be considered as an intrinsic property and the complete tribological system should be considered in addition to the geological properties of the rock.In the present paper, a new test method for abrasivity assessment in tunnel boring called Rolling Indentation Abrasion Test (RIAT) is presented. The traditionally used test methods for determination of rock abrasiveness uses sliding or impact contact in order to cause wear while the RIAT introduces rolling contact on intact rock samples. The ambition of the new test device is to have a reliable method to evaluate the cutter wear in hard rock tunnel boring by reproducing wear behaviour on rolling disc cutters in a more realistic way. It has been established by many authors that the abrasion of a cutter ring is proportional to its rolling distance (Rostami, 1997; Bruland, 1998). In the present work, the weight loss of a mini-cutter ring is measured subsequent to testing in order to evaluate wear in the rolling process and could hence be related to cutter ring wear. Indentation of the tools in the intact rock sample is considered as an indication of the surface hardness of the rock or the resistance to indentation by rolling."

"The wet grinding of asbestos has attracted the attention of engineers for many years as a means of improving fibre liberation from the ore. Today, added impetus for wet grinding has resulted from a need to minimize worker exposure to asbestos dust in conventional dry mills using air, as well as a need to provide a cleaner, technically superior fibre for use by product manufacturers. However , high viscosities of asbestos slurries create transport and grinding difficulties which have been a factor impeding use of a wet grinding process.Laboratory evaluation of reagents to reduce viscosities of asbestos slurries found that one reagent, XFS-4272.00, reduced the viscosity of a 35% (by weight) slurry by 75%. The impact of XFS-4272.00 on actual grinding parameters were evaluated using a pilot plant rod mill. Slurries containing 78% solids and XFS-4272.00 were successfully milled and asbestos fibres from that milling compared favourably in liberation and relative surface area to asbestos fibres obtained from milling a 4% slurry without additives.IntroductionAlthough the use of asbestos has been declining over the last few years, the large deposits of chrysotile in eastern Canada (Quebec in particular) remain very important. Asbestos production in Canada stands ninth in volume for mineral production with over 740 000 tonnes produced in 1985. Of this quantity, 722000 tonnes were exported with a value of $446 million . Canada is second in world production of asbestos behind the U.S.S.R ."
