GENERAL GEOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION The uranium mineral appraisal herein described was made for an ore deposit in New Mexico. The uranium mineralization occurs as roughly tabular to lens-shaped deposits of varying thickness within the sandstone of the Jackpile formation of Jurassic age. The mineralization occurs at several horizons within the Jackpile formation, but is not always confined to specific beds. It often transgresses across stratigraphic layers, as demonstrated when attempting correlation of uranium gamma anomalies between adjacent drill holes. Preferred mineral trends have been established in some parts of the deposit, but are not always predictable when attempting to extrapolate beyond the zones defined by drill hole sampling. MANAGEMENT OF DRILL HOLE SAMPLE DATA All of the drill hole sample data used in the appraisal were obtained from interpretation of gamma-ray logs. A brief description of gamma-ray log sampling is given in Chapter 2. Two preliminary steps are involved in preparing gamma-ray logs into sample data normally acceptable for computer manipulation. 1) The gamma analog trace produced by the downhole probe must be digitized, i.e., counts-per-second (CPS) are recorded for each 0.15 m (1/2-ft) interval across the gamma-ray anomaly. The work is usually done on a "digitizer" while following the analog trace with an electronic stylus on a special tablet or table. The other alternative is to do the work manually. Some of the newest downhole logging equipment produces a magnetic tape output which can be read by a computer. 2) The gamma-ray CPS values must then be converted to equivalent U308 assay values, taking into consideration all appropriate correction factors. The US Atomic Energy Commission, now part of the Department of Energy, developed the theory and algorithm for this conversion in the 1960's, and though the work can be done manually, it is best done with the GAMRED (gamma-reduction) computer program. Fig. 14-1 illustrates a typical analog trace produced by the probe instrumentation, including gamma-ray trace (left), self-potential electric log (center), and resistivity log (right). Fig. 14-2 shows a form of the computer output after the analog data has been digitized to 0.15-m (1h-ft) intervals and converted to percentage U308 values for the same hole. The U308 grade bar graph on the right permits rapid visual inspection of anomalous values by depth and elevation. The converted U308 sample data were next processed by the SURVEY program that assigned to each assay interval [0. 15-m (1h-ft)] an X Y Z coordinate, taking into account all deviations indicated from downhole survey information. The output file of the SURVEY program was listed on the line printer for examination by project geologists, and also became the main input file for the URAN/ COMP compositing program, which is designed to group individual 0.15-m (/-ft) U308 sample values into larger intervals representing discrete anomalous zones according to a series of specified parameters entered into the program by the user. Composite U308 intervals were computed by the URAN/COMP computer program, the logic of which may be briefly described as follows: Step 1 The program searches for the highest U308 value in the hole and builds a composite by adding the highest grade interval on either side so long as the added value is greater than a minimum acceptable grade, and the total composite, after addition, meets minimum GT (grade times thickness) constraints. Step 2 The program loops back to find the next highest assay value in the hole not already included into a composite, until all anomalies above minimum cutoff grade are composited. Step 3 Individual composites are combined if they are closer than a specified minimum waste thickness, and the resultant composite grade still meets GT minimums.

When a flowing oil well is being drilled in with cable tools, it is difficult to determine when an additional streak of pay sand is drilled. By placing a gas meter on the gas-release line from the oil and gas separator, any increase in volume of gas that comes with oil production is recorded. In addition to the better knowledge of sand conditions, these data are a valuable aid in determining the size and depth of shots, plugging off water, and estimating ultimate production. The meter also gives a record of operation while the well is drilling in; and if allowed to remain on the well after completion will give information that may lead to a more efficient recovery of the oil from the sand. A VERTICAL cross section of any oil sand will show great variation in porosity and oil content. In some sands, the entire thickness contains oil, the variation being only the degree of porosity or oil content, but more often the pay streaks are distinctly separated by shells or barren streaks. These pay strata vary in number and may be thin or thick. The total thickness of the sand may be several tens of feet while the part containing oil may be only 1 or 2 ft. thick. The amount of production is not proportional to the thickness of the sand but rather the thickness of the pay streaks. If the total thickness of the sand or the amount that can be drilled is small, or if the initial production is small, the depth at which each stratum of pay is encountered can be determined sufficiently accurately for all present economic purposes. However, when drilling through sand of considerable thickness, giving large initial production, especially where conditions necessitate that the production go through the same gas trap with that from one or more wells already producing, it is difficult to determine the depth at which the pay strata are encountered even accurately enough to guide the placing of shots, and small pay streaks are apt not to be recognized at all.

TWO or three years ago there were submitted to me some reports of tests that had been made on a semi-oxidized ore of silver looking to its treat-ment by combined flotation and cyanidation, together with a sample of the ore, with a request that I check the tests and confirm them, if possible. These tests had been made by a machinery-supply house and with them was a flow-sheet for a proposed mill, with full details of equipment to be used in the mill. The limited data on which this was based at once attracted my attention and have caused me from time to time to put various groups of students at work to develop simpler methods of obtaining data, which it appeared should be at hand and could be obtained by simple tests before attempting to treat these ores commercially. A brief discussion of the working out of such methods may be of interest and may contribute somewhat to the de-velopment of better testing methods for the small operator who has not at his command a staff of metallurgists. Of several tests on samples of varying assay and mineralogical composition, by cyanidation alone, by flotation alone, and, by combinations of the two, the following report was perhaps the most complete and may well serve as a typical example: METALLURGICAL TEST REPORT Silver Mines Co. Semi-oxidized Ore Procedure: Ore ground to 65 mesh, given flotation treat-ment using pine oil and potassium xanthate. Flotation tailing was thickened and given cyaniding agitation in solution strength of 5 lb. cyanide per ton and 2 lb. lime per ton.

Electrical resistivity of a number of pure liquid metals and alloys has been measured as a function of temperature and composition. The data show a close correspondence between the liquid and solid states with respect to thermal, structural, and compositional relationships. STUDY of diffuse scattering of X-rays by liquid metals1 has demonstrated that some degree of order persists above the melting point and that the atomic constitution of liquids is more analogous to the solid state than to a gas. Consideration of the change in various thermodynamic properties that accompanies transformation from solid to liquid leads to the same general conclusion.² evertheless, specific knowledge of the constitution of the liquid state is limited when compared with that of the solid and gaseous states owing, in part, to the difficulty of interpreting the X-ray data and in part to the indirect character of deductions based on thermodynamic data. Of the structure-sensitive physical properties, electrical resistivity of liquid metals is perhaps the most easily interpretable, particularly when comparison is made with the solid state. According to the available data, most of which was obtained prior to 1914, cubic metals exhibit a normal linear and positive temperature dependence in the liquid state and the data have been accepted without question. The divalent metals, zinc and cadmium, are apparently exceptional in that resistivity is not linear with temperature and it passes through a minimum. Mercury also exhibits a nonlinear temperature dependence but the slope is always positive. Important comparisons with magnesium could not be made at the time the following work was undertaken because the necessary experimental data were not available. Data on liquid solutions are very limited and are largely from a single source."-" Based on Bornemann's work, Norbury7 pointed out that the resistivity of liquid copper alloys appeared to be dependent on the valence of the solute and that the increase due to the solute was of the same order as in the solid state. However, large extrapolations were involved and no quantitative relationship was developed. Therefore, before proceeding with additional deductions regarding the resistivity of liquid metals and interpretation in terms of structure, it appeared necessary to verify and extend the previous work with particular emphasis on divalent metals and the effect of alloying elements of different valence in dilute liquid solutions. THE diffusion of copper in silver has been studied by Sawatzky and Jaumot1 and Cahoon and Youdelis.2 Sawatzky and Jaumot measured tracer diffusion in single crystal specimens but the 12.9 h half-life of CU64 limited the time of the diffusion anneal to about 50 hr, and in consequence the minimum temperature of the investigation was 716°C. Cahoon and Youdelis employed polycrystalline diffusion couples, and measured the interdiffusion coefficient over the range 0 to 2 at. pct Cu. These experiments were performed at temperatures down to 630°C and a discontinuity in the Arrhenius plot was observed at -700°C. The high D-values at lower temperatures were attributed to the effect of grain boundary diffusion. The present experiments were undertaken to investigate this anomaly and study the low temperature region of the diffusion of copper in silver. The method employed single crystal samples and a plated source of copper. Silver single crystals 2½ by 4 in. sq were grown from zone-refined silver bar (>99.99 pct Ag) by the Bridgeman technique, and $ in. thick slices were cut by spark machining. The specimens were electro-polished, and a 2 µm layer of copper was electroplated on to the planar surface at one end of each specimen using a potentiostatic voltage source. The following solution was used for plating: CuSO4 . 5H2O 125 gm H2SO4 (S.G. 1.8) 53 ml H2O 1000 ml The diffusion couples were sealed in capsules, in an argon atmosphere, and were annealed at either 701, 597, or 498°C. The temperature measurements were made to an accuracy of *l°C After the anneal, the penetration of copper into the silver was determined using an electron probe micro-analyzer. 100 sec scaler measurements of the intensity of Cu Ka! X-radiation were performed at 2 to 5 µm intervals along a line normal to the source, with a beam potential of 25 kv. Allowances were made for the background radiation, and the dead-time of the counting system in the normal way, and the intensity ratios were corrected to weight concentration by the method of Duncumb & de-Casa.3 For the analysis of the diffusion profiles, it was first observed that the copper layer did not completely dissolve in the host crystal for the specimens annealed at 498 and 591 whereas for the specimen annealed at 701°C, a single phase solid solution was formed. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made. his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. During the year 1934, the Constitution and Bylaws of The United Engineering Trustees, Inc., were thoroughly revised and a better organization of its functions was effected: The Engineering Foundation and the Engineering Societies Library were made "departments" of the United Engineering Trustees. The Founders Societies share in the property which it holds, and estimated at the present time, as follows: Real estate,. $1,993,793; Depreciation and Renewal Fund, $401,000. The U.E.T. has endowment funds amounting to $1,086,893. The A.I.M.E. trustees are W. D. B. Matter, Jr., A. L. Queneau and Albert Roberts.

ASARCO's copper smelter at Hayden, Arizona has been upgraded to meet the increasing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) environmental standards. Fortunately, means were found to accomplish these standards and provide for more efficient operations. With the adaptation of oxygen flash smelting and other related operations at Hayden, ASARCO has turned to the use of minicomputers and microprocessors for inter-plant communications and local area process control. The applications of distributive and computer controls to the plant operations at the Hayden smelter are discussed in this paper.

TULSA, the host of the Petroleum Division this year, is the oil metropolis of the Mid- Continent and gateway of the Southwest. It has risen in less than three decades from a dusty cattle town of less than 1000 population to its present-day status of a modern, wide-awake and prosperous city of close to 150,000, with an assessed realty valuation of approximately $100,000,000. Oil was discovered near Tulsa in 1901, and with it came th.2 development of the Mid-Continent field, one of the richest in the world. Tulsa from the start has been the center of operations, and its location on foul- and aggressive application of the airplane to oil-field requirements tends to fix this status as production is developed farther and farther afield. That Tulsa is far more than an ephemeral oil town is punched into the newcomer's- especially the Easterner's-mind, as he is whisked by taxi from the railroad station to the Hotel Mayo. The cicadalike pounding of the riveters on the steel skeletons of many skyscrapers, mounting upward to fill the gaps in an already well-developed skyline, dispels the feeling of a new atmosphere and puts him back on Forty-second Street, Michigan Boulevard or whatever his own particular "Main Street" may be along which an American city is being remade. A description f the geology and conditions affecting the occurrence and mining of oil; also the prospects of obtaining oil in different parts of the country. THE Colombian highlands consist of three parallel mountain ranges (Fig. 1) called respectively the eastern, central, and western cordillera of the Andes. A segment of the range that forms the backbone of the Isthmus of Panama also extends into Colombia, along the Pacific coast, as far southward as the mouth of the San Juan River. These four mountain ranges furnish the key to the varying climatic conditions and vegetation of the country. The river valleys are hot and covered with dense tropical growth. This is also generally true of the coastal plain, although in the northern portion there are some fairly open stretches where cattle are raised and even small districts where semi-arid conditions prevail. The population of this heavily wooded wet lowland depends almost entirely on river transportation for all intercourse. The elevated mountainous plateaus of the three ranges are more open and more generally cultivated; all traffic is by means of horses, mules, and the burro. The canoe and river-steamer transportation systems of the valleys are connected with the highland system of trails and roads by short cross trails and the few short railroads of the country. As these cross trails must pass through the intermediate foot-hill region, where the heavy rainfall reaches its maximum, they are exceedingly bad and the life of pack animals is short. The oil development of the Magdalena River valley is in this intermediate region, between the river and the sierras, north of Bogotá.

INTRODUCTION OF FROTH FLOTATION INTO THE UNITED STATES "The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically ." T. A. Rickard l James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U. S., about Aug. 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Mont., which was then under lease to the Butte and Superior Copper Co.2 Two months later, the Minerals Separation Ltd.. filed suit in the U. S. District Court of Montana against Mr. Hyde char& him with infringement of their Patent 835, 120/1906. The U. S. District Court decided in favor of Minerals Separation Ltd. on July 28, 1913. This decision was reversed by the Ninth Court of Appeals in San Francisco on May 4, 1914. Then the U. S. Supreme Court, on Dec. 11, 1916, upheld the patent on three counts only but restricted it to 'the use of less than one percent of oil.” The Miami Copper Co. was sued by Minerals Separation on Oct. 10, 1914, for infringement of Patents 835,120 and 962,678, and 1,099,699. The Miami Copper Co. was operating under John M. Callow's froth flotation process Patent 1,104,755/~uly 23, 1914. Miami lost this suit in the District Court of Wilmington, Del., and appealed to the Court of Appeals, Third Circuit, Philadelphia. The Third Court of Appeals decided against Miami, May 24, 1917. The case was referred to a Master and hearings to determine profit and damages were not settled until 1923. Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. was sued Sept. 9, 1919, and Magma Copper Co. was sued Jan. 10, 1920. Thus, the first ten years of froth flotation in the U. S. were beset by patent litigation. This litigation suppressed the free circulation of new discoveries or useful information that might be cited in a patent suit against the originator; it accounts for many of the blank spaces in the historical record. T. A. Rickard3 has reviewed the history of flotation and has given the chain of discoveries, patents, and processes that resulted in froth flotation. The Tz-Zr system was reinvestigated using both metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. It mas found that titanium and zirconium are soluble in all proportions in both the a and 0 phases. The minimum in the transformation was found at 50 at. pct and 535°C. THE Ti-Zr system has previously been the subject of several investigations.1-6 A study by Hayes et al.5 using magnesium-reduced titanium and zirconium melted in graphite crucibles indicated that the system was a continuous series of solid solutions in both a and 0 phases with a minimum at approximately 545°C and 65 pct* Zr. These conclusions were substantiated by the work of Duwez4 as well as by the limited data of Craighead et al.,3 Fast,2 and deBoer.1 However, a more recent investigation of the titanium-rich region by Ence and Margolin6 indicated that the solubility of zirconium in a, titanium at 500°C is approximately 22 pct with the a + 0 field extending to approximately 47 pct Zr. Therefore in order to resolve this discrepancy the following investigation was initiated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The alloys used in this investigation were prepared as 20- to 30-g buttons by nonconsumable electrode melting in a helium atmosphere. The starting materials were Bureau of Mines titanium BHN 71 and Foot Mineral iodide crystal bar zirconium. The titanium was premelted before the alloys were prepared to avoid excessive weight losses in the final melting. The compositions of the alloys prepared were as follows: Ti-12.0, 22.2, 29.0, 39.6, 50.0, 58.0, 72.4, 83.5. and 90.8 pct Zr. Prior to heat treatment the alloys were cold-worked 10 to 20 pct, stopping at the first signs of cracking. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet and annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules for the following times and temperatures: 750°C-40 days, 675°C-61 days, 600°C—109 days, 575°C-112 days, 550°C-112 days, 525°C—127 days, and 450°C —153 days. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the capsules in an iced-brine solution. The standard techniques used for polishing the specimens involved belt grinding, grinding on emery paper, polishing electrolytically, and etching with Remington "A" etch7 or "R" etch 8 Debye-Scherrer X-ray powder photograms were obtained for a number of samples using a 114.6-mm camera and CuK, radiation. Exposure times were from 19 to 23 hr. The powder samples were obtained by filing to 270 mesh size. After filing the samples were wrapped in molybdenum foil capsuled in quartz and reannealed at the temperature of original heat treatments; following the heat treatment the samples were quenched into iced brine without breaking the capsules. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the microstructural examinations of the heat-treated samples and of the X-ray diffraction data, the Ti-Zr system shown in Fig. 1 was constructed. The data indicate that a, and 0 titanium form a complete series of solid solutions with a, and ß zirconium. The minimum was found to occur at 65 pct (50 at. pct) Zr and 535°C, in excellent agreement with the earlier investigations,1-5 see Fig. 2. Typical microstructures are shown in Figs. 3 to 7. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show the 22.2, 39.6, and 50.0 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment at 675°C for 61 days with the 22.2 pct Zr showing equiaxed a, and the 39.6 pct Zr alloy a + transformed ß, while the 50 pct Zr alloy shows only transformed B. Figs. 6 and 7 show the 29.0 and 39.6 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment for 109 days at 600°C. The 29 pct Zr alloy has an equiaxed a structure while the 39.6 pct alloy has a partially recrystallized a+ß structure. X-ray diffraction data obtained from the 50 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment at 525° and 450°C as well as from the as-cold-rolled material showed only those lineos which couid be indexed a: a titanium, good agreement with the previously published values. 2,4,5,9 Chemical analysis* of the 50 pct Zr alloy

PRACTICAL or applied geophysics-as we designate the border region between physics and geophysics on one hand and practical geology on the other-has as its object the application of physical or geophysical methods of investigation to problems of practical geology. Its field of operation comprises all methods of physical measurement that are used in the problem of determining, from the geophysical influences of the subsoil that can be measured at the surface of the earth, the special characteristics of the association of strata, faults, etc., to detect the presence of deposits and to investigate underground structures. It therefore repre-sents an aid, a physical method of research in practical geology, and is inseparably connected with geological studies; for this reason, it is also called geophysical prospecting. Formerly research methods of practical geology were based on observation exclusively: first, on the observation of the strata and formations at accessible parts of the surface of the earth, especially in shafts, borings and mines if such were available; then on the observation of the tectonic conditions in so far as these were already known at places directly visible; and finally, by estimation of the importance of formations of the terrane. Later, there were added in special cases, analytical chemical crystallo-graphical, petrographical and similar investigations of rock samples which were taken from the places under consideration. The knowledge thus obtained is of value and is expanded by hypotheses and constructions that are supported by geological theories of origin and by laws of the sequence of formations and rock systems, which are based on long experience.

IT is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.1-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.1-6, It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by the use of acute dies.2 The actual stress distribution in drawn .tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7-9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process: Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal.1-10 MATERIALS AND PREPARATION The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.‡ This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2 -in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The wall of the tubing becomes thicker during sinking, as previously observed 4,5 The increases in wall thickness were 3, 7 and 9.5 per cent on the average for 6, 20 and 33 per cent reductions in diameter, no effect of the contour being noticeable. The reductions mentioned throughout this investigation do not consider this fact, but are reductions of the outside diameter. For the evaluation of the residual stress two fundamentally different methods were used. The approximation method1,11 of splitting a certain length of tubing was employed to obtain a bird's-eye view of the effect of various drawing conditions on the circumferential stress measured by the diameter change occurring on splitting. The binary system Ga-Sb has been investigated by thermal, X-ray, and metallo-graphic methods. 'The intermetallic compound GaSb melts at 705.9OC and forms a eutectic with antimony at 11.8 atomic pct Ga. This eutectic melts at 589.8OC. A eutectic appears to be formed at 29.8°C but is too close to the composition of pure gallium to be detected. IN the course of an investigation of the semiconducting properties of the intermetallic compound, GaSb, the phase equilibrium between gallium and antimony has been investigated. Recently, the phase diagram of similar systems, such as In-Sb,' In-AS,' and Bi-As3 have been determined. These diagrams have the same general appearance in that an intermetallic compound is formed at 50 atomic pct and a eutectic is formed on both sides of the intermetallic compound. Jenny,& who has been investigating the semiconducting properties of intermetallic compounds, has concluded from thermal data of several alloys that the phase diagram of the Ga-Sb system resembles those mentioned previously. This paper represents a more detailed study of the Ga-Sb equilibrium. Experimental Procedure The gallium that was used to prepare the alloys was obtained from A. D. Mackay Inc. and the Aluminum Co. of America; the latter reported the purity as 99.95 pct. The antimony was obtained from Bradley Mining Corp. who specified a purity of 99.997 pct. Since the intermetallic compound of GaSb was prepared primarily to be used for further studies of the semiconducting properties, additional purification by a standard zone-melting technique under an atmosphere of hydrogen was performed. Hall-effect measurements on this material indicated an impurity content of less than 3 ppm.5 The antimony also was purified by zone melting and used in conjunction with the compound GaSb to make the necessary alloys for the determinations of the antimony-rich side of the phase diagram. The antimony-rich alloys were chill cast in Vycor tubes which were evacuated to a pressure of less than one micron. Since these alloys expand on freezing, precautions were taken to prevent oxidation of the ingot in the event the tube fractured. To insure homogeneity, the brittle alloys were ground and then placed in the furnace for the thermal-arrest determinations. Since the cost of gallium is high, the experimental procedure was complicated somewhat because of the necessarily limited sizes of the melts. In order to economize, the gallium-rich side of the diagram was determined by using a 35 g ingot of pure gallium initially and adding increasing amounts of antimony in order to obtain additional alloys. The furnace used in the determination of the cooling curves is illustrated in Fig. 1. A 2¼ in. quartz tube, sealed at one end, was fitted with a brass flange which was attached with DeKhotinsky cement. The brass collar was water cooled to prevent the cement from softening. An "0" ring was used to provide a seal between the brass collar and the furnace cover. Nichrome ribbon was wound around a 2 ½ in. asbestos-covered copper core which was used to reduce the thermal gradient in the furnace. Performance of a high-pressure, vaporizing gas-drive project in a volatile oil reservoir is discussed. The project has been in operation for over 8 years. Present recovery from the over-all displaced portion of the reservoir is 40 percent, and an ultimate recovery of 60 percent is indicated. Calculations reflect an over-all displacement volume of 50 percent for the entire reservoir; therefore, ultimate oil recovery will be 30 percent of the entire reservoir oil originally in place. Laboratory vaporization tests conducted prior to project initiation also are presented and discussed, along with an analytical method of determining stock-tank oil production and gar injection requirements related to over-all volumetric displacement efficiency from these data. Introduction The Shoats Creek field is located in Beauregard Parish, La., in the extreme western part of the state (Fig. 1). Discovered in 1956, the field is productive in three Cockfield sand zones, ranging in depth from 8,000 to 9.000 ft. The upper two zones, 1st and 2nd Cockfield, are condensate-bearing gas reservoirs. The lowest zone, the 5th Cockfield, is a volatile-oil reservoir. Laboratory work conducted on crude oil from the 5th Cockfield zone shortly after field discovery demonstrated that, when contacted with dry gas, signidcant volumes of the oil could be vaporized at reservoir temperature and at an appropriately high reservoir pressure. Further study led to the conclusion that early initiation of a crude vaporization project in the 5th Cockfield zone would be superior economically to other methods of reservoir depletion. Consequently, the zone was unitized and gas injection operations started late in 1958. This paper discusses laboratory work performed in conjunction with the project, and project performance to the present. History of Development The 5th Cockfield zone in Shoats Creek is composed of a thin, very shaly, low-permeability sandstone. Oil accumulation is controlled by a structural trap bounded by faults along the north and west and by a water contact on the southern boundary (Fig. 2). The zone covers a productive area of 1,550 acres at an average depth of 9,000 ft. The net sand section is thin, having a maximum thickness of 10 ft and an average thickness of 5.5 ft (Fig. 3). Average reservoir rock properties, as determined from core analysis are presented in Table 1. Shaliness of the zone is illustrated by the typical electric log of the 5th Cockfield section in Fig. 4. Because of the thinness and poor quality of the sand, the 5th Cockfield was developed on a wide spacing. Eleven completions were made in the zone between 1956 and 1961 for an average density of 140 productive acres per completion, with the majority of wells being dually completed in the 2nd and 5th Cockfield. Average initial potential for producers in the 5th Cockfield was 130 BOPD. Oil from the 5th Cockfield has a stock-tank gravity of 50.5" API; with a bubble-point pressure of 3,515 psia, the oil was highly undersaturated at the original reservoir pressure of 4,675 psia. Pertinent properties of the oil as determined in the laboratory are presented in Table 2. Because of the volatile nature of the crude, laboratory studies of its susceptibility to vaporization, as well as a vapor-liquid phase study, were conducted in addition to a standard PVT analysis. The computer methods employed as well as the model constructed are based on economic and econometric theory. The early Spanish adventurers found but little gold or silver on the American mainland, and the aborigines in the country that is now the United States were not as submissive as those of the West Indies, so the conquistadores obtained no foothold north of the Caribbean sea. Their later exploration north- ward had Mexico as a base-and wild yarns as a basis. The friar Marcos, a member of Estevanico's unfortunate expedition, brought the story of the Seven Cities of Cibola to Mexico City in 1539. Except as Indian hovels,* they existed only in a disordered imagination, but when Váquez de Coronado's expedition pricked the glittering bubble, there appeared an enticing mirage in the northern desert: the glorious land of Quivira, where even-the common pitchers and bowls were made of solid gold. Coronado proceeded northward and found only enormous herds of buffalo on the plains of Texas. It was a melancholy land. No gold or silver was to be seen among the poor Indians. Coronado reached the country of the Wichitas, in Kansas, before he abandoned his quest and turned home, which he reached, with only a third of his party, hungry and tattered, in 1542. So long as greed stimulates the imagination there will be no lack of tales such as those that repeatedly led the Spaniards to the rainbow's end. The deformation behavior in tension of spheroidized carbon steels was studied at room temperature as a function of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt Pct, and carbide particle size, 0.88 to 2.77 p. It was found that the Hall-Petch strength-grain size relation is directly applicable to the yield and flow stresses of the two lower-carbon steels , 0.065 and 0.30 pct C. The strength data for the medium- and high-carbon steels, 0.55 to 1.46 pct C, also satisfied the Hall-Petch relation, provided that these data are based upon the particle spacing. Beyond 4 pct strain, the flow stress data of all the steels studied could be represented by the same Hall-Petch relation with dinerent spacings for grain boundary and particle strengthening. The behavior of the higher-carbon steels was consistent with the postulated formation of a dislocation cell network during processing and initial deformation (up to 4 pct strain). The cell size was assumed to be equal to the planar particle spacing. The true stress at the ultimate tensile strength was also found to be a function of the particle spacing. At a given temperature and strain rate, the yield and flow stresses of carbon steels depend on the type and dimensions of the microstructure. Starting with the work of Gensamer et al. in 1942,' experimental studies on pearlitic and spheroidized carbon steels revealed that the strength of steels is a function of two main parameters: the ferrite grain size2'3 and the carbide particle spacing;1'4'5 on this basis, two different strengthening mechanisms have been developed to apply to steels of low and high carbon contents, respectively. In polycrystalline iron and mild steels the grain boundaries are regarded as the major structural barriers to slip. The relation between strength and grain size is generally represented by the Hall-Petch equation which is based on a linear proportionality between strength and the inverse square root of the average grain size.2'3y677 However, Gensamer et al.' and Roberts et related the yield strength of medium -and high-carbon steels to the carbide particle spacing alone, and they found a linear relation between the logarithm of the mean free path in the ferrite and the yield strength in both spheroidized and pearlitic steels. By means of the electron microscope, Turkalo and LOW' extended the study to finer structures; they concluded that the logarithmic relation is not valid for the entire range of microstructures unless grain boundaries are also included in the measurement of the mean free path. For the specific case of spheroidized steels, Ansell and aenel' found that the yield strength data,4'5 when plotted as a function of mean free path, fit the Hall-Petch equation; however, T'ysong found that the same data fit the 0rowanl0 relation if a planar inter-particle spacing is used. Recently Kossowsky and ~rown" studied the strength of prestrained spheroidized steels, 0.48 and 0.95 pct C, and concluded that the strength due to the carbide dispersions varies linearly with the reciprocal of the square root of the mean free path between carbide particles and dislocation networks. Such networks were first observed by Turkalo." The conclusion common to all these studies is that the available slip distance in the ferrite is the most important variable in determining strendh. Previous work on carbon steels is restricted to limited composition and strain ranges. The mechanism which governs the flow properties is not clearly understood, and, in particular, little is known about the composition dependence of the transition between grain boundary strengthening and particle hardening. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the strengthening mechanism in spheroidized steels over a wide range of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, and plastic strain, yielding to necking. The spheroidized structure was chosen because of its relative simplicity and the relative ease of control and measurement of the structural parameters. The experimental work is limited to tensile testing at room temperature at constant extension rate. The effects of the carbide particles on the fracture behavior of spheroidized steels are discussed elsewhere.13 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Eight different grades of vacuum-cast carbon steels were supplied in the form of forged and rolled plate by the Applied Research Laboratory of the U.S. Steel Corp. The compositions furnished with these steels are given in Table I; the carbon content ranges from 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, or from 1.0 to 22.3 vol pct of carbide. The steel plates were cut transversely into rods a little larger than the test specimens, 1 in. gage length, i in. diam. The rods were austenitized in air (enriched with CO by a consumable carbon-rich muffle) at 50° C above theA, orA., temperature for 2 hr and then quenched in oil with vigorous stirring. The as-quenched rods were tempered in two stages in order to obtain the desired distributions and sizes of carbide particles. The rods were first tempered at 460° C for 10 hr and then at 700" C for periods ranging from 4 hr to 3 days, in vacuum. After final machining, all specimens were vacuum-annealed again at 650°C for 1 hr in order to relieve residual stresses. The tension tests were carried out in two steps. The initial part of the load-strain curve, up to about 2 pct strain, was determined on a Riehle testing machine with an extensometer of small strain range, 4 pct strain, in order to obtain the yield and initial flow piopertiesi As soon as the first part of the test was finished, the specimen was placed in an Instron testing machine equipped with a strain gage extensometer with a maximum strain range of 50 pct.
