Rates oj decarburization of levilated Fe-C droplets conlaining 5.5 to 0 pct C have been measured at 1660°C. Gas mixtures of 1, 10, and 100 pct 0, with helium diluenl were used at velocities of 12.5 and 62.5 cm per sec. Rates were independent of carbon concentration in the mell and in good agreement with the calculated rule of oxygen diffusion through the gas boundary layer. The effects of flow rale and total pressure are as predicled and the rates are approxitnalely 2.5 times those with CO2 as oxidant. The mass-transfer correlation used incorporaled the efject of natural convection as well as forced conrection. Graphile spheres are shown to oxidize at the same rate as Fe-C droplets under the same experimental codlions. It is concluded that, for high carbon concentrations in the melt, the rate of- decarburizalion is controlled wholly by the rate of gaseous diffusion. Rate measurements with pure CO, are reported for low carbon concentrations where CO bubbles nucleate within the droplet. Under these circumstances the decarburi-zation decreased with carbon concentration and it is proposed that carbon diffusion is significant in conlrolling the decnvburization rate. In an earlier paper1 decarburization rate measurements were reported for levitated Fe-C alloys at 1660°C but with CO2 as the oxidant. The decarburization rate was found to be independent of carbon concentration in the melt but slightly affected by total pressure. The authors were unable to explain the slight pressure effect but in all other respects the results were consistent with control by diffusion in the gas boundary layer. Subsequent work has been directed at finding the reason for the slight pressure effect and whether the kinetics with oxygen as oxidant parallel those with CO2. Recently Ito and Sano2 have shown that with water vapor-argon atmospheres the decarburization rate is gaseous diffusion controlled until an oxide film appears on the surface. In this work the melts were contained in crucibles. MASS TRANSFER IN THE GAS PHASE In the earlier analysis1 only forced-convection mass transfer was considered. Subsequent recognition of the existence of some free-convection mass transfer explained the observed small effect of total pressure on the decarburization rate. Steinberger and Treybal3 and Kinard, Manning, and Manning4 have developed correlations involving the linear addition of the contribution of radial diffusion, free and forced convection. Steinberger and Treybal&apos;s correlation was chosen as the most applicable to the present work since it correlated most of the data available in the literature and handled the low Reynolds number region exceptionally well. The correlation for (Gr&apos;Sc) < 108 is where Nu&apos; is the Nusselt number for mass transfer based upon the total surface of a sphere in an infinite medium, G&apos; is the mean Grashof number for mass transfer defined by Eq. [2], Sc is the Schmidt number (µ/pDAB)f, Re is the sphere Reynolds number (dpu,pf/µf), p is the viscosity of the gas (poise), p is the density of the gas (g cm-3), Dab is the binary diffusivity for the system A-B (sq cm sec-&apos;), dp is the sphere diameter (cm), u is the approach velocity of the gas (cm sec-I), and subscript f denotes the property value is computed at the film temperature Tf defined by Tf = +1/2(To + Tr) where To is the specimen temperature and T, is the approach gas temperature (oK). Natural convection occurs when inhomogeneities exist in gas density. These may be caused by concentration gradients, temperature gradients, or both. In the present work the temperature gradient between the sphere and the bulk gas was very large and in some cases, for example the runs with pure oxygen, the concentration gradient was also appreciable. George IV. Goetz, Milwaukee, Wis.: Mr. Campbell deserves much credit for his interesting paper. The literature of the development of the open-hearth process is distributed in many technical journals, and is difficult of access to many engineers. Since the development of the basic process, the open-hearth furnace has been raised from a subsidiary to an independent position. Certain high grades of soft steel can be produced in the basic open-hearth furnace, which cannot be produced by any other known process. In the United States the charges for the acid process generally consist of either scrap and pig-iron or so-called wash-metal and scrap : the pig-and-ore process, as carried out in England, is practiced but very little. The introduction of the basic process has made it possible to use about four times as much pig-iron with scrap as can be used in the acid mixtures. The availability of a cheap pig-iron, very low in silicon and sulphur, and carrying several per cent. of manganese, is one of the reasons why the basic open-hearth process has developed so rapidly in Germany, as regards the output per furnace and the excellent quality of the material produced. The acid Bessemer steel has an inherent stiffness, which is plainly shown when spring steel is made by the Bessemer and by the openhearth processes. In order to get them of about equal stiffness, the open-hearth steel must have about 0.60 per cent. carbon ; whereas, the Bessemer steel must then have ahout 0.45 carbon, the remaining constituents being apparently about the same in each product. It has proved impracticable, with American coke-pig-iron, to interrupt blowing at a certain point in order to make hard steel; and experience has therefore shown that it is best to eliminate nearly all the carbon, and then to recarburize to the desired point. A geometric model of interstitial solid solutions, which has been used previously as a basis for the prediction of carbon activities in Fe-C austenite, is shown to serve also for the calculation of nitrogen activities in Fe-N austenite. The model has been developed to enable predictions to be made of the activities of an interstitial element in the presence of two host atom species. The activities calculated via the model are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with the measured values in the austenite phase for carbon in Fe-C-Co, Fe-C-Cr, Fe-C-Ni, Fe-C-~n, Fe-C-Si, and Fe-C-V alloys and for nitrogen in Fe-N-Ni alloys. The effect of the second substitu-tional solute on the logarithm of the activity of the interstitial element is expressed as the product of a constant mad the atomic concentration of that solute. The constants so derived we related to the thermo-dynamic interaction coefficients which describe the effect on the activity coefficient of carbon of an added solute element. In recent years the thermodynamic activities of carbon and nitrogen in the single-phase austenite field have been determined for iron binary alloys and for several iron-base ternary alloys. In order to extend the use of these measurements, it is desirable to be able to predict with reasonable accuracy the activities of the interstitials at compositions and temperatures other than those which have been measured experimentally. In all the systems studied to date, the interstitial elements do not conform to ideal behavior. Hence, the available data cannot be extrapolated or interpolated using the simple thermodynamic concepts of solutions. Several models have, therefore, been formulated for the purpose of predicting the activity of an interstitial element in the presence of one species of host atom. These models can be divided into the geometric1"5 and energetic6-&apos; types. The former group is based on the assumption that at low concentrations the activity of the interstitial species is determined by a composition-dependent configurational entropy term and an excess free-energy term which is temperature-dependent but independent of composition. The purpose of this paper is to show that the treatment, based on a geometric model, can be extended to enable predictions to be made of interstitial activities in the presence of two substitutional host atom species. THE CONFIGURATIONAL ENTROPY OF MIXING ICaufman5 has shown that the configurational entropy, S,, for a binary solution comprising of a host atom species, A, and an interstitial species, I, can be expressed as: where NI is the atom fraction of the interstitial species, R is the gas constant, and (2 - 1) is the number of interstitial sites excluded from occupancy by the strain field around each added interstitial atom. The number of interstitial sites per host atom, p, is unityg for the fcc austenite solutions considered here. The configurational entropy of mixing for a ternary solution comprising two substitutional atom species, A and B, and one interstitial species, I, can be derived similarly. Let the number of atoms per mole of each of these species in the solution be represented by «a, ng, and nI. From geometric considerations, it is improbable that the addition of a few atom percent of a second host atom species will change the type of sites (i.e., octahedral) in which the interstitial atom can be accommodated in the austenite lattice. At higher concentrations (determined largely by the relative atomic radii of the atomic species present and any tendency to nonrandom occupancy of the host lattice sites) other types of interstitial sites may become energetically favorable. Restricting consideration to compositions below this limit, for 1 = 1 the number of suitable interstitial sites is given by (n + nB). However, if each interstitial atom excludes from occupancy (Z - 1) additional sites, the total number of sites available for occupation is reduced to (n + ng)/Z. The number of vacant interstitial sites is given by: The total number of recognizable permutations of the atoms must include the recognizable, different configurations of the A and B atoms on the host lattice. The hammer drill rightly receives the credit for having made the one-man drill possible, and so many economies seem possible through the proper application of :different types of hammer drills to various mining, quarrying, and, excavating operations, that an indication of the economies effected by the New Jersey Zinc Co. at its Franklin mines may be of pertinent interest. When this company commenced its trials of hammer drills in 1907, these tools had not I been developed to one-fourth the capacity and refinement which they have at present. At that time it was frequently stated that such a small tool, drilling holes of less diameter than the reciprocating rock drill, could not drill enough holes in a shift to permit the placing of sufficient explosive to break a tonnage of ore comparable with that produced by the"&apos; rock drills;" that the placing of small holes inclined upward, at angles steeper than 40° above the horizontal, could not be expected to produce results equal to the large flat, wet or dry, holes in the breasted back of an overhand stope, and would only shatter the ground so as to make the back unsafe. In&apos; spite of these adverse opinions, the hammer drills first showed their superiority over both heavy and light reciprocating drills in raising and in stoping, and then in drifting and quarry work. As a result, all of the reciprocating drills at the Franklin mines were scrapped, three years ago, all of the mining work being accomplished with increased efficiency, as shown in detail in this article. With the advent of the hammer drill in this property, it was considered advisable to make comparative tests of all the tools accessible, and it has since been the policy to investigate the merits of any advance of the drilling art in order to get the maximum amount of work from the tools. The necessity of devising some means of standardizing drill tests, and of measuring the consumption of compressed air as well as the drilling speed, was early realized.

The object of the experiments reported in this paper is to determine the eutectic composition of copper and tin and to determine the location of the part of the liquidus line immediately above the eutectic composition in copper. Three methods were used in the investigation: (1) the method of dissolving copper in a bath of molten tin at constant temperature, with the idea that when the bath was saturated with copper its copper content, by analysis, together with the temperature at which the saturation took place would locate a point on the liquidus line; (2) the method of the differential cooling curves, and (3) the method of microscopic examination. This paper is principally concerned with the results of the last two methods mentioned. The results of the first method, that of dissolving copper in molten tin, did not agree with the results of Miller,&apos; by the same method, nor with the results of other investigators by other methods, nor yet with the results of the cooling-curve experiments and microscopic examination reported here. Solution of Copper in Molten Tin To determine the amount of copper that would be dissolved by molten tin at a given constant temperature the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 was used. It consists of a cast-iron pot a, 6 in. deep and 8 in. dia., well cleaned inside and dressed with graphite. This pot, which holds 15 lb. of tin, g, rests on a hot plate b with resistance winding c. The thermocouple d leads to a Wilson-Maeulen temperature regulator for maintaining the temperahre at the heating coils at a fixed temperature to within ±5°C. There is a shallow bath of solder e on the top of the hot plate to improve the thermal contact between the plate and the pot. An insulating jacket f of asbestos prevents the irregular radiation of heat from the apparatus. The copper stirrer h slowly rotates in, and is dissolved by the bath of molten tin g. This bath is protected from excessive oxidation by a layer of charcoal j. H. H. Hill.—I believe that as petroleum engineers you are all more or less interested in geophysical prospecting. A large number of the papers that have been written on that subject are too detailed or too much involved to be of much value to a person who is not familiar with the subject, so I suggested to Mr. Fohs that he might bring us something that we could all understand. As I take it, we are interested in learning something about the different methods, the places where they have been used, their limitations and in general whether they have given satisfaction in locating oil deposits. F. J. Fohs, New York, N. Y.—I will briefly summarize some of the results as I Bee them from my practical contacts with them and my discussion of the subject with some of the more important rnen both in this country and Europe. Geophysical Methods 1. Seismographs: A. 1. Sonic refracting seismographs of Karcher, McCullom and Reiber. For rapid reconnaissance and also for detail—perhaps, the best type of instrument. 2. Mechanical refracting seismographs of the Weichert-Mintrop type. B. I. Sonic seismographs using reflected sound from contacts of sufficiently unlike beds where latter are thick enough, being used for detail of both salt domes and ordinary structures where a good reflecting key bed occurs. 2. Torsion Balances: Made in three sizes with greater portability and loss of but 20 per cent. in medium size and loss of 40 per cent. efficiency in smallest size. A. Used to best advantage in detailing salt domes, in noting anomalies of deep-seated structures of the Edgerly, La., type (but not always certain here and dependent on interpretation which involves both experience and the human equation to a large degree). R. Used to advantage in mapping faults where a lime or other denser bed occurs upthrown, and the topographic irregularities are not too involved. C. Of use where buried granite plugs and buried-hill structures occur as in the Western Texas fields. D. Believed of little use for other types of structure. 3. Magnetometers or Variometers: Now built horizontal and vertical with declinometer combined in one instrument. A. Practical in mapping granite or basic igneous rock plugs and intrusions, or of detritus therefrom. Adams has recently demonstrated definite results in mapping the well known Panhandle arch.

Structural changes in Be-Cu, Be-Ni. Be - Ag, and Be-Fc alloys pressurized in a solid medium were invesligated by resistivity measurements , X-ray diffrac lion in situ and metallogvaphic examination. Some limited tests in liquid medium were also conducted. Good correlation was oblained between diauges of slope of relative resistance us pressure and changes in diffraction pattern. Metallographic examination rez:ealed that the copper, silver, and nickel alloys lwiu heauily due to the applicalion of pressure at room temperature. Using polarized light technique {1012}, {1011}, and possible {1010} twinning planes were identified. At eleuated temperature twinning was moslly confined to the {1012} planes. Although twin-ning could be promoted by application of hydroslutic pvessure (liquid medium), it was strongly enhanced by the pvesence of a nonhydvostatic shear component due to pressurizalion in a solid medium. It was further obserced that a decrease in grain size inlnibiled twinnitzg activily. A great deal of effort has been expended in recent years to render beryllium useful for structural applications. Efforts were concentrated towards a possible phase change and to promoting other than basal deformation modes. Quenching experiments to obtain the high-temperature bcc phase have failed,&apos; nor were alloying additions successful in improving ductility of the brittle hcp phase.2 Herman et a1.3 have reported a new {1011} twinning mode in a Be-4.4 wt pct Cu alloy oriented for a C axis compression sustaining loads to 440,000 psi. A new approach using high-pressure techniques was undertaken at Curtiss-Wright, Wright Aeronautical Division Laboratories. Marder4 reported a 25 pct decrease in relative resistance of commercially pure beryllium at 92 kbar. He proposed that this discontinuity corresponded to the bcc phase found at high temperature; however, X-ray diffraction in silu did not confirm a phase transition.5 contre6 has recently shown that the bcc transition in pure beryllium is lowered to 800°C at 80 kbar accompanied by a 50 pct increase in relative resistance. The purpose of this paper is to report on one phase of an investigation of the effects of high pressures and temperatures in beryllium alloys, namely, twinning behavior in Be-Ni, Be-Cu, Be-Fe, and Be-Ag alloys pressurized to nearly 100 kbar and temperatures up to 200°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Material was obtained from Nuclear Metals, Inc., in the form of a 1.5-mm-diam wire extruded in stainless-steel cladding at 1600° F. Nominal composition of the alloys is listed in Table I, and the major impurities are are given in Table 11. Pressures to 100 kbar* were ob- tained using a National Bureau of Standards type 100/400 ton tetrahedral unit supplied by Barogenics, Inc. This type of apparatus contains a retaining sleeve with a conically tapered internal surface and four pressure-intensifying anvil assemblies with tungsten carbide tips. It was quite evident from an analysis of blast-furnace operations that the work we are doing in America is anything but creditable. We were consuming fully 1000 pounds of coke more than is necessary for each ton of iron made, and were hammering the linings of our furnaces out in a very short time, and nothing but the very high price of pig-iron would stand the drain. It had long been my pet scheme to gradually reduce the quantity of air, at the same time increasing the burden to the maximum and decreasing the limestone, and determining, if possible, the fuel economy which might be reached consistently with the maximum production of the furnace. The nature of solid solutions of sodium in non-paphitic carbon at temperatures near 1000°C has been investigated by an electrolytic technique. The activity coefficient is found to vary strongly with the heat-treatment temperature of the carbon, and an analysis of the energy terms involved suggests that this is due to variations in the Fermi level. The diffusion coefficient for sodium is in the range implying that the sodium atoms (or ions) are not bound to specific sites on the carbon, in agreement with lack of evidence for specific compounds in the activity -composition curves. In the light of These results phenomena occurring in aluminum reduction cell linings are dis-cussed. It is concluded that sodium migrates by diffusion through the carbon lallice and not the pores, and that A14C9 is formed within the lining hy The excess of NaF invariably found in used linings is formed by this reaction and by air oxidation: There has recently been much interest in the swelling of carbon which occurs when it is made cathodic in an aluminum electrolysis cell, and there is general agreement that the phenomenon is due to the penetration of sodium atoms, derived from the reaction on the carbon lattice. (NaF and AlF3 are constituents of the fused-salt electrolyte.) The low-temperature lamellar compounds of potassium with graphite are well-known, and one compound between sodium and graphite has been reported.4 There is, however, virtually no information on the basic chemistry of the interaction of sodium with nongraphitic carbon at high temperatures, although Dell3 has made some fundamental studies of rates of penetration. At the time the present work was carried out these were not available. Rapoport and samoilenkol had measured rates of physical expansion in a dilatometer, using the fractional increase in length of a carbon specimen after electrolysis in a cryolite bath for 2 hr as an index of susceptibility to cathodic swelling. Work here with a similar apparatus showed that expansion (of a 1.5-in.-diam cylindrical specimen) ceased in less than 20 hr, and that the final expansion was much more reproducible than the value at some intermediate time. This suggested that an equilibrium was being set up, and that a thermodynamic approach was required. The results obtained are not as accurate as had been hoped, but they are the only ones of their type available and have enabled useful conclusions to be drawn. The experimental work was divided into two parts: an investigation of the activity-concentration diagram for sodium in carbon, and a rough determination of the diffusion rate. For the former, most of the experiments were made with petroleum coke even though this is not a form of carbon used in cell linings. It has the advantages, however, that it is a homogeneous material, that it is low in ash, and that its structure is reasonably well understood. Anthracites and coal cokes gave results of the same type as obtained with petroleum coke, but the reprodu-cibility from specimen to specimen was extremely poor. EXPERIMENTAL 1) The Activity-Composition Diagram for Sodium in Carbon. The petroleum coke was ground, pressed at 40,000 psi into plates 19 by 9 by 2 mm without added binder, and heat-treated. The sodium activities were established by an electrolytic technique. The carbon was made anodic in a cryolite bath with an aluminum cathode, and a controlled potential, E, applied so that the sodium activity at the anode was given by ln Na = 1n asa - EF/RT [21 where as, is the sodium activity generated by Reaction [I]. The relative activity is sufficient for many purposes and is simply given by The value of Na not at present known, but when the thermodynamics of the Na-A1 system have been worked out it can be derived from the equilibrium

SPANIARDS were probably the first to mine the rich surface ore in the veins cutting the rhyolite capping that outcrops on the hills of La Mazata, oil the Allyones side of the Magdalena valley in Jalisco, Mexico, although the name comes from a word of Indian origin meaning "deer". The camp is about 12 km. west of Magdalena, a town on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and about 17 km. north of Etzatlán, on the Mexican National Railroad, at an elevation of 4500 ft. The climate is subtropical with no extremes of heat or cold, the rainy season beginning in June and ending in October.

The experience of the past five years has furnished opportunities to study and to partially explain the operation and some of the causes of the short blast of Warwick Furnace at Pottstown, Pennsylvania, as described in the paper read at the Lake Superior Meeting, in August, 1880.* The many inquiries concerning the details of furnace operation which followed the publication of the paper, and the expressed desire of furnace managers to be informed as to future operations of this plant, have encouraged the preparation of the following data. To make the record continuous, and add to the value of both contributions, the present paper commences where the review of a short blast of Warwick Furnace ended, and includes the data of another short blast of two months, and a subsequent continuous campaign of nearly five years, which, by comparison, we shall designate as "the long blast." Frequent visits to the plant in the five years, during which its operation could be studied, and correspondence with the manager, Mr. Edgar S. Cook, have given a knowledge as to general features and details, and the courtesy of the officers of the Company which has given free access to the books of record permits the presentation of data which it is believed will be welcomed by furnace managers. Interest will undoubtedly be increased by the remarkable results which Mr. Cook has achieved chiefly with anthracite coal in a furnace whose details of construction will scarcely be generally admitted as embodying advanced ideas, its height being but 55 feet, with a bosh diameter of 15 feet 6 inches, its bosh-slope comparatively flat, its crucible smaller than the average, and the heat of the blast never reaching 1000&apos; Fahrenheit. At present writing the credit of the best anthracite blast-furnace practice recorded in our Transactions is conceded to be that pursued by Mr. Fackenthal, at the Durham furnace, and Mr. Cook, at War-

COMPRESSED air has been and is still very extensively used in connection with mining-operations, but its application in the past has been almost entirely confined to supplying power to underground machinery. Its introduction was due to the difficulty of taking care of the steam which is exhausted underground, rather than to any advantage in efficiency to be gained by its use. The ease with which electric power may be carried to the remotest parts of the mine and the high efficiency of the electric motor have long been appreciated by mine-operators, and electric power is now extensively used underground in the more recent developments, while many of the compressed-air engines in the older workings are being rapidly replaced by electric motors. Recently, however, it has been suggested to use compressed air for driving the large shaft-hoists, the air for the engines being supplied by electrically-driven compressors, and an installation of this character is being erected at Butte; Mont. It is the object of this paper to compare the compressed-air system of hoisting with the various electrical systems, from the stand-points of first-cost and cost of operation. However, before entering into a discussion of the various systems, it will be well to consider briefly the conditions affecting the choice of a system of hoisting in which electricity is the ultimate source of power. The power required by a mine-hoist is extremely intermittent and fluctuates between very wide limits, the all-day average consumption of power not exceeding from 5 to 15 per cent. of the maximum demand during hoisting. The introduction in the field of a new type well completion called for the setting of tubing open-ended in the well before perforating the casing. This paper describes a new perforating tool of the shaped charge expendable type, small enough to pass through tubing and powerful enough to perforate the casing. The perforations are produced at an angle and are large enough for optimum production. Performance of this tool in targets and under various well conditions is described. Very often no lifting equipment will be available at the well. In some cases, pressure will exist in the well at the time of the perforating operation (workover wells or multiple trip perforation) ; therefore, new equipment and new technique for the perforating operation were devised. This paper describes this equipment and technique, particularly casing collar recording, sheave support, and cable pull-down device. this last item being necessary for wells under pressure. Results obtained with this tool in the field are given. INTRODUCTION One of the key requirements for the introduction in the field of a new method of permanent well completion was the development of a new perforating method involving the use of a perforating gun small enough to go through tubing and with enough penetrating power to perforate the casing satisfactorily. The equipment described in this paper was basically designed to go through open-ended two-in. tubing and to perforate 5 1/2 in. casing. The equipment is illustrated in accompanying figures. NEW COMPLETION METHOD With the new permanent type well completion, the production string of casing is run and cemented through the potential producing zone. Open-ended tubing is -then run into the well and used to replace the drilling fluid with oil or water. The amount of the oil or water "cushion" can be varied according to the expected bottom hole pressure. Thus, if desired, the hydrostatic head can be greater, equal to, or less than the expected pressure within the zone to be perforated. Mud having been displaced, the tubing is -then positioned so that the end is above the zone to be perforated. The Christmas tree and flow lines are installed and tested. The drilling rig can now be removed from the well since it is not necessary for the perforating operation, thus resulting in a saving in rig tme. The perforating equipment is then moved to the well and the gun lowered through the tubing. After the gun passes out of the open end of the tubing, the depth measurements are correlated with casing collars and the gun placed opposite the zone to be perforated. Upon firing, the gun body is shattered and falls to the bottom of the well. Since the lubricator has been closed before firing, it is possible to withdraw the casing collar locator and head and then open the well immediately to the tanks. DESCRIPTION OF GUN An investigation of two basic types of Perforators, namely a bullet perforator and a shaped charge gun, was undertaken towards the development of a gun to meet the aforementioned requirements. Preliminary tests on various bullet perforator designs within the diameter limitations did not give results encouraging enough to warrant further study. Somewhat better results were obtained by using conventional shaped charges; but, as in the case of the bullet types, the necessarily small overall diameter proved to be a severe limitation and resulted in insufficient penetration. A shaped charge employing a new design was developed which gave excellent penetration. These shaped charges were designed to produce a large hole directed upward at a 45" angle. In order to obtain the maximum space possible for these charges, it was decided to use an expendable carrier made of drillable material, usually aluminum, which would shatter at the time of firing, leaving only harmless fragments at the bottom of the hole. Crystal-structure occurrences in binary phase diagrams of fifth- and sixth-period elements, zirconium through palladium and hafniun through platinum, are surveyed with the conclusion that average .group number GN is the dominant correlative. This is interpreted in terms of curves of enthalpy differences between competitiue structures that are continuous func -tions of GN. It is further reasoned that the absolute formation energies may also be continuous functions of GN and if so can be simply obtained from the regatives of the heats of sublimation of the elements. It is shown that from such a heat of formation-GN plot the heats of mixing of alloy systems can be quantitatively predicted. For example, for sixth-period alloys very large exothermic heats of mixing are predicted for systems that span GN = 6 (i.e., Hf-Pt, Ta-Os, ...). Thermodynamic data with which to test these predictions do not appear to be available. If in the latter transition (A subgroup) elements we eliminate from consideration the fourth period where magnetic terms contribute to crystal-structure stability, as shown in Table I, there is a very regular sequence of structures. Using the group number (GN) assignments of Table I, which differ from the usual assignments of 8 to the elements listed as 8 through 10, it is perhaps trivial to say that the phase occurrence is a unique function of GN. However, the interesting aspect of alloys from among these elements is that the alloy structures also appear to correlate with GN. The GN for an alloy is given as GN = SixiGNi, where xi and GNi = atomic fraction and GN of component i, respectively. It is difficult to credit anyone in particular with having discovered this correlation, so many people have implicitly or explicitly employed it in the last 10 years. However, Bloom and Grant&apos; in their correlation of s-phase occurrence with total number of d + s electrons were certainly one of the first to appreciate the correlation and Hume -Rothery2 appears to be responsible for the use of average GN as defined above. Only in the last few years have the phase diagrams of enough alloy systems been determined for this correlation to be surveyed with any degree of completeness. We shall here, in an abbreviated format, summarize the available phase-diagram literature and discuss some consequences of the GN correlation. BINARY DIAGRAM SURVEY In Figs. 1 to 3 the phase occurrences are summarized. In Fig. 4 the occurrence limits for the more common structures are summarized. That the GN of an alloy falls within the occurrence limits of a particular structure is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for the appearance of that structure. The preceding figures certainly illustrate that GN is a dominant correlative for structures of these elements. Many of the diagrams have complications, with ordering and other phase changes occurring in intermediate phases, that cannot be clearly accommodated in such a schematic survey and have hence been left out. Such omissions cannot, however, negate the GN correlations discussed here. Relative atomic size is also an important crystal-structure determinant and since atomic size varies quite regularly with GN for these elements it is possible that the apparent GN correlation is basically a size correlation. Ultrasonic attenuation, a, measurements in the frequency range of 5 to 55 mc per sec have been studied to determine their quantitative relationship with the following three variables of mixed microstructures in steels: 1) the volume percent, XF, of polygonal fer-rite in mixed structures of martensite and polygonal ferrite in Fe-Mo-B alloys: 2) volume percent, XA, of retained austenite plus martensite aggregates in high-carbon steel; and 3) substructural differences between 100 pct bainitic ferrite structures formed at various temperatures. The quantitative relationship obtained in the first two conditions by plotting a us the known structural parameters can be expressed, respectively, as: where al, a 2 and C1, Cz are constants. In the third condition the nature of the attenuation depends on the state of dislocations generated at the transformation temperatures and also on the alloy composition. From these measured results, the mechanism of ultrasonic attenuation caused by these mixed microstructures can also be studied. MUCH interest has recently been shown in the application of ultrasonic attenuation and wave velocity measurements to the study of the microstructural characteristics of steels. The general aims of most of the investigations in this field can be grouped into two categories: one is to study the mechanisms of ultrasonic losses caused by the characteristic phases in the microstructure of steel,&apos;&apos;&apos; and the other is to develop nondestructive test methods and applications for quality control.~&apos; 4 Apparently no work has been done on the evaluation of ultrasonic attenuation meas -urements as a means of quantitative determination of a given phase in the microstructure of a steel. It is well-established that the decomposition of austenite results in four main microstructural constituents—polygonal ferrite, pearlite, bainite, and martensite—and that each phase has different mechanical properties. Thus, when a steel consists of mixed microstructures, the mechanical properties can often be related to a quantitative measure of the volume percent of each phase present. This study relates ultrasonic attenuation measurements to: 1) the volume percent of polygonal ferrite in mixtures of martensite and polygonal ferrite in Fe-Mo-B alloys; 2) the substructural differences between 100 pct bainitic ferrite structures formed at various temperatures; and 3) the vol- ume percent of austenite in austenite plus martensite aggregates in a high-carbon steel. The choice of the specimen materials was based on the laboratory stocks which were suitable to produce the required mixed microstructures for this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials and Heat Treatment. Polygonal Ferrite Plus Martensite Structures. This mixture of phases was produced in a vacuum-melted Fe-Mo-B alloy. The alloy was hammer-forged at 1900" ~ to a -f-in.-sq bar. By isothermally heat treating the alloy at 1300° F for various times and then water quenching, variations in the amount of polygonal (or proeutectoid) ferrite can be controlled in a microstructure in which the balance of the material is martensite. In the present work, four different times of isothermal transformation were adopted; after heat treatment, the four specimens were machined for ultrasonic measurements. The compositions, heat treatments, and dimensions of the four specimens are listed in Table I. 100 pct Bainite Structures Formed at Different Temperatures. It has been well-established by Irvine et al.= that the presence of molybdenum and boron in ferrous alloys can retard the formation of polygonal proeutectoid ferrite and expose the bainitic transformation bay, so that a more acicular or bainitic ferrite can be obtained over a wide range of cooling rates. Their investigation6 also showed that the mechanical properties of fully bainitic steels are usually closely dependent on the substructural characteristics of the steels. For studying the substructural characteristics in completely bainitic structures, six Fe-Ni-Mo alloys, of which five were free from carbon addition and one with 0.055 pct C addition, were selected so that a wide range of hardness values for 100 pct bainitic ferrite structures could be produced by normalizing at 1900" F followed by air cooling. The different bainitic transformation temperatures were recorded during air cooling. All of the alloys were vacuum-melted and then forged at 1900" F to square bars. Data on the six specimens of these structure series are summarized in Table 11. Austenite Plus Martensite Structures. The high-carbon steel used to study austenite plus martensite structures was vacuum-melted and then forged into Q-in.-sq bar. The series of mixed structures of austenite plus martensite was produced by quenching the specimens from the austenitizing temperature to room temperature and then refrigerating them at various temperatures within the range of martensite transformation to produce different amounts of retained austenite. Data on the four specimens of this series are listed in Table 111. Quantitative Analysis of the Microstructures. The microstructures containing martensite plus polygonal ferrite were analyzed by the point-counting technique.

The kinetics of re crystallization were determined metallographically for a 3-1/4 pcl Si-Fe rapidly compressed at temperatures of 710° to 911°C, and held for various times at the working temperature. As in re crystallization following cold wwk, the time for re crystallization was reduced by increased temperature and strain. Nucleation occurred chiefly at grain edges, although other pre-existing interfaces, notably inclusions, also served as nucleation sites. The importance of intragranular nucleation to grain refinement in hot working is pointed out, together with some possible techniques by which nucleation might be induced within the grains. The observed isothermal growth rates are quite accurately described by the equation G = 4 x 10-&apos;/t (cm per sec), independent of temperature and strain at all but the shortest times. Changes in G during recrystalliza-tion can exceed two orders of magnitude. It is argued that release of stored energy associated with lattice defects cannot adequately explain the time dependence. A suggested alternative involves processes of solute segregation and desegregation in the unrecrystallized matrix and at the moving boundary, respectively. EFFORTS to improve hot-working practice are hampered by an incomplete understanding of the fundamental metallurgy involved. Research directed at establishing the required basic foundation falls into two categories, the first concerned with measurement of mechanical properties under the conditions of high temperature and strain rate which characterize such processing, the second focused on structure and its relation to the deformation conditions. Rossard,&apos; Rossard and Blain,2 and Hardwick and Tegart have conducted many high-speed, high-temperature torsion tests on various metals. One of their objectives was interpretation of stress-strain curves in terms of the structures of specimens rapidly quenched following interruption of twisting. They showed that appreciable hardening occurred in the early part of the test, and that this hardening reflected the concurrent development of an increasingly dense substructure within the grains. The detailed nature of this substructure was observed to depend on the ease of polygonization which, at least in fcc metals, varies with the stacking-fault energy.= By holding specimens after interruption but before quenching, the nucleation and growth of new grains could also be studied. Some success has been realized in relating the microstructure of hot-rolled steel to its temperature:strain rate:strain history with such testing.&apos; The same general observations have been made by others investigating rolling4f5 and drop-hammer forging.~-~ Incident to these experiments, some efforts were made to determine the kinetics of re-crystallization as well as the velocity of the migrating boundaries. The results have been largely qualitative, owing to difficulties of interpreting hardness measurements5 and microstructures. The work described here was undertaken to obtain more quantitative information from tests on a material having suitable metallographic properties, and, in this way, to provide further insight into the fundamentals of this practically most important kind of deformation processing. I) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Materials. Electrolytic etching of a Si-Fe alloy reveals dislocations and substructure in unrecrystallized grains.8&apos;9 This unique characteristic makes possible a precise determination of the extent of recrystallization. For that reason, it was the material selected for all experiments in the present work. The two particular alloys that were used are identified in Table I. A major difference between "A" and "B" is the number of inclusions, as noted in the table. Most of the experiments were made with material "A". It was received as hot-rolled plate 1 in. thick, sawed to 2-in. widths, hot-forged at 1200°C to 5/8-in. rounds, and finally annealed in a mechanical vacuum at 1000°C for 24 hr. The result was substructure-free grains of mean diameter 0.05 cm.*
