In the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives were used annually in the United States. Most of this quantity of explosives was used by the mining industry and coal mining was the dominant application for explosives. Considering the large amount of explosives used, the accident safety record for the mining industry has improved significantly over the past two decades. Blasting accidents are usually a small percentage of the total number of mining accidents. However, blasting accidents continue to occur and the severity of these accidents is disproportionately high with respect to other types of mining accidents. This paper is a summary and an update of the surface mine blasting accident investigations and studies conducted previously by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines.

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

Dynamic rock mechanic as it pertains to blasting has involved several areas of active research effort. Among the important problems which have been the subject of research are wave mechanics in rocks, mechanisms of rock breakage, cratering, applications of similitude, energy partitioning of explosives, coupling, and other related factors. In some of these areas many problems have received fairly complete answers, while in others, investigations have raised new questions while attempting to answer existing ones. The slabbing mechanism explains many of the phenomena observed in blasting, but is hot the complete answer to observed breakage and fragmentation phenomena. There is currently a gap between coupling experimental results and theory. Applications of similitude to open pit blasting have been made unnecessarily complicated. Basic scaling laws for large true and apparent craters have not been derived for either chemical or nuclear explosives. There are few useful data and little developed theory on the partitioning of energy of explosives in all types of blasting. No suitable mathematical model has been developed which will describe the stress waves in rock which are responsible for rock breakage: Significant progress has been and is being made in these areas of research, however. ELASTIC AND NONELASTIC WAVES Complete solutions for spherical wave equations in viscoelastic media are not available in the literature. Equations for certain viscoelastic models do show limited promise, however, of being applicable to rock masses, particularly for pulse type phenomena. A series of laboratory blasting and ball mill grinding tests have been done on four different types of hard and competent rocks. The results show that exposing these rock types to a higher level of explosive energy will enhance their grindability. True blasting optimisation should therefore look at the whole comminution process from solid rock to a marketable product.

ANFO was being used as one of the blasting agents on a construction site in New England. Groundwater was encountered in numerous blast holes. The blasting contractor was employing typical explosives loading procedures for wet conditions. An abutter to the project complained that blasting caused her well water to have an odd taste and smell. Through testing, it was determined that there were hydrocarbons and nitrates in the well water. Several days later a second neighbor complained of foul tasting water; again it was determined that hydrocarbons and nitrates were present.

Cave mining is an underground mass mining technique. The largest projects, which are known as ‘super caves’, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of ore per day, which involves large footprints with considerable column height, and have a life of mine of over 20-40 years. These operations are typically located deep, under high stresses and in competent rock masses, making initiation and propagation of the caving process harder to manage. These challenges must be confronted by optimizing the fragmentation of the orebody to achieve smaller size blocks that will result in consistent caving and improved flow of the ore from the drawpoints. To achieve better performance from the drawpoints, preconditioning is applied to fragment and damage the material required to cave. We present a proposed design for preconditioning in underground mines, considering the challenges that these large-scale mines are already facing, based on a comprehensive analysis of current design parameters, case studies, and sensitivity analyses using numerical models.

In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. The new Cyprus Northshore Mining Co. has taken the previous blasting methods of Reserve Mining Co.'s mine in northern Minnesota and adapted them to a new competative Iron Ore Industry. Cyprus was challenged to develop new blasting methods to reduce costs and improve results over the previous mining operation. Many of the older procedures have been kept, but others have been changed in ways that bring the mine operation up to state of the art technology. In addition, unique ideas not previously tried in the North American Iron Ore Industry have been instituted. So far, this has reduced Cyprus's blasting costs by 70 percent.

At the Metropolitan Nashville International Airport, with its more than 600 scheduled daily flights from American Airlines hub operations, other scheduled airline flights, Tennessee Air National Guard operations, as well as numerous industry air flights, the excavation of 300,000 cubic yards of rock was required without disrupting airport operations for a cut and cover underground tunnel with a 4 lane US Highway and new airplane runway to extend across it's top. In addition to the excavation, the removed rock was to be broken to specification type that was clean and of small size for fill in another area of the airport property. The blasting was limited to two 1/2 hour windows per day and stiff monetary penalties were in place for schedule slippage of each phase of the project.

Rock formation at shallow depths is generally associated with complex geology consisting of many joints, fractures, bedding planes, etc. Fragmentation results from primary blasts in such strata are therefore significantly influenced by structural discontinuities. To evaluate the role of discontinuities, which is of great use in the design of blasts in such conditions, a two-stage investigation program was taken up. In the first stage, model scale tests were conducted with single and double holes with the strike of discontinuities parallel and perpendicular to the face. Later, field studies were conducted in a limestone mine and a coal mine. Blast patterns were modified based on the results obtained from model scale blasts. Secondary blasting was taken as a measure to assess blast performance in the field, whereas mean fragment size, fine and coarse fragmentation indices were considered as fragmentation measures in model scale tests. Model tests indicated confinement of explosive energy by the discontinuities surrounding blasthole. Crater shape and size were significantly influenced by the orientation of joints with respect to the face. Modified blast designs with decreased burden x spacing patterns resulted in improved fragmentation in the field. A reduction of about 12 per cent in explosive consumption was recorded with modified blast designs. Boulder formation was observed to decrease by about 79 per cent as well.

First, I want to thank my co-author, Leon del Valle for his help and collaboration in the preparation of this paper, and also ORICA S.S. our explosive supplier and contractor at the Refugio mine site for their collaboration. The Southern Andes Mountains present a number of challenges for mining operations, and associated blasting operations. This region of the world, in Peru, Bolivis, Chile and Argentina is an area of rapid growth in precious and base metal mining, and will continue to be a large growth area for explosives products and services. This paper will attemp to discuss some of the special considerations encountered in operating a safe and effective blasting program at high elevation and under extreme weather conditions, as well as outlining a recent improvement in blasting techniques at the Refugio gold mine in northern Chile. This paper is presented from a mine operator's perspective, which may be a bit of a disappointment for some of you interested in a detailed technical review of our program. It willl, however, provide an insight in how in-pit blasting techniques tie into the metallurgical processes at a modern precious metal mine and thereby become a key elemnet in its success.

This paper will discuss the issues associated with blasting in an urban mining environment that have been addressed by Winstone Aggregates at the Mt Wellington Quarry. These issues include - control of vibration and air overpressure, repeatability of shot performance, fragmentation on an extremely low maximum instantaneous charge, compliance with Territorial Authority regulations and perception. Over the last two years, in order to address these issues, Winstone Aggregates have undertaken a programme of continuous improvement, which has included; ò implementation of new technology; ò revising site procedures; ò conducting an investigation into the structural response of local buildings; ò investigating safe extrapolation; ò extensive public consultation; ò establishing credibility during the consent process; ò identification of perception issues; and ò building relationships and trust with neighbours. The issues addressed at the Mt Wellington Quarry have increasing significance for traditionally rural mining operations, as the input of the local community being urban or rural, increases. New and existing operations have the potential to adopt best practice now, building trust with the community and raising the profile of the industry.

There are several thousand remote stream crossing structures in the Tongass National Forest in need of removal. In 2007 thirty-three collapsing log bridges, log culverts, and metal culverts no longer in use were removed with explosives. Species of salmon, trout, char, and sculpin are present in the project area. Blasting overpressures may injure or kill fish in streams and ground vibrations can damage salmonid embryos in streambeds. Regulatory agencies offer guidelines with limits for blasting induced overpressures and vibrations. However, there has been no quantification of blast overpressures in shallow streams. Methods used to predict lethal levels for various blasting applications have not been completely validated. This research provides guidance for analyzing ground vibrations and water overpressures during blasting activities in or around fish streams.

FOR blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flame make their use safer than that of non-permissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless. The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.1 This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district.

This paper will describe two blasting plans that have been developed for American Aggregates' Marble Cliff Quarry located near Columbus, Ohio. Two different limestone formations are mined on different levels of the quarry. Each formation requires a different blasting plan which address vibration considerations, crusher productivity, drilling and blasting costs and adjacent neighborhood concerns. Controlled blasting is critical to continued mining operations in this Midwest urban setting.

Duvha Opencast is a large South African dragline operation supplying coal to the Duvha Power Station which is operated by Eskom, the state power utility. For Duvha to remain competitive with other collieries, it has proved necessary to continuously examine and investigate methods of reducing costs. With explosives representing a major portion of the total working costs, blasting is an obvious area of investigation.
