The object of this study was to investigate the i1Jfluence of nitrogen on the structure and properties of AISI 310S steel. Experimental ingots of the steel with nitrogen contents of up to 0,525 per cent by weight were prepared, hot-rolled, and tested after various treatments. The rollability of the material was adequate. The yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, and fatigue properties of the new alloys improved with increasing nitrogen content. The impact properties improved slightly. Empirical equations were developed for the calculation of the yield and tensile strengths, as well as the difference between these two properties, with increasing nitrogen content.

The role of large, ultra-high-powered arc furnaces in a fully integrated steelworks for the production of flat products is outlined, and an account is given of the technological improvements that have been implemented over the past few years to enable the arc furnace to remain competitive against the conventional route using blast furnaces and top-blown-oxygen steelmaking (LD). Modern secondary refining facilities have been installed, enabling the arc furnace to operate at high production rates in the manufacture of high-quality flat products.

An account is given of the production of three types of experimental high-chromium duplex stainless steel. The alloys had chromium contents of 22, 29, and 35 per cent. The partitioning of the main alloying elements between the austenite and ferite phases was determined, and the effect of the alloying elements chromium, nickel, and molybdenum on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steels is summarized. The phase compositions of the different duplex stainless steels were measured by different techniques, and the values obtained were correlated. The cracking occasionally observed during the thermo mechanical processing of these alloys was studied, and is explained as being the result of known embritlement processes.

This paper reports the results of a literature review carried out on nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steels and their properties. It was found that a large volume of work has been carried out on the subject, particularly with regard to the more common stainless steels such as types 304 and 316. No work appears to have been conducted on the highly alloyed steels such as type 310S. Nitrogen has been found to increase the stability of the austenite in stainless steels and to impart significant improvements in the mechanical and corrosion properties of these alloys. Importantly, nitrogen appears to increase both the ductility and the strength of austenitic stainless steels over a wide range of temperatures.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. (A.I.C.) (Visitors) A method is described for the determination of the rheological parameters of a fast-settling slurry with conventional viscometric measuring equipment. The effect of concentration, temperature, and pH on these parameters is investigated. The results agree with those obtained by previous workers using different viscometers, but this method allows a more detailed characterization of all the properties. From a literature survey, two semi-empirical equations were found that allow the effect of concentration, temperature, or pH on the rheological parameters to be correlated.

A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. The sixth University of Stelenbosch (US)/University of Cape Town (UCT) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the University of Cape Town on Friday, 7th August, 1987, and was sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). Once again the Symposium attracted a large number of delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries. Uranium and electricity A symposium on 'Uranium and Electricity- The Complete Nuclear Fuel Cycle' will be held in Saskatoon, Canada, during 18th to 20th September, 1988. The Symposium is sponsored by the Canadian Nuclear Society. Electric steel The Institute of Metals, organizers of the 3rd European Electric Steel Congress, have announced that this important international event will take place in October 1989 at the Bournemouth International Centre.

The price received for a commodity decreases as the quantity sold increases. all other factors remaining the same. This has been the position with gold since it was demonetized in August 1971. The result is that the marginal revenue per kilogram of gold decreases steadily with increased production. If operating losses are to be avoided, the marginal cost of production must not exceed the marginal revenue. This requirement, although not seriously violated by most invididual mines, is not met by the industry as a whole, resulting in large losses of income to the State and the shareholders. These losses are increasing, and a way of curbing or reversing this trend is described.

The selectivity of ion-exchange sites varies with the matrix of the polymer, the nature of the site. and the method of application. The effect of these variables on the recovery of uranium is examined. with particular attention to vinyl pyridine and to symmetrical and asymmetrical quaternary ammonium sites. The effect, on the loading. of high concentrations of chlorides in the liquors is discussed. and other components of the liquors that may cause fouling of the resin are also considered. The discussion is supported by the results of tests conducted on various types of resins. The economics of the process is discussed briefly.

The modeling of the uranium-leaching process, and the logging of data from a plant for the evaluation of the model, are reported. A phenomenological approach was adopted in the development of the model. A set of eight chemical reactions was chosen to represent the complex chemistry of the process, and kinetic expressions for these reactions were incorporated in differential equations representing mass and energy balances. These equations were coded in FORTRAN to form a program that simulated the process, and that allowed averaged and continuous data from the plant to be compared with the model. The effect of vanadium on the susceptibilities of chromium and chromium-nickel steels to reversible temper embritlement was evaluated. The steels investigated were approximately equivalent to steels of as 970 Grade 708A42 and as 970 Grade 817M40, the major difference being that molybdenum had been replaced by vanadium in various concentrations. It was found that the vanadium had a detrimental effect and, in al the concentrations tested, enhanced the susceptibility to reversible temper embritlement of both the chromium and the chromium-nickel steel. The detrimental role played by vanadium in reversible temper embritlement is explained by a consideration of the effect of vanadium carbide, as well as of free vanadium, in solid solution in ferrite.

Noranda has been involved in the development of technologies for automated mining vehicles since 1988, and has contributed in transferring the technological foundation for the suite of SIAM products now being commercialized by STAS. Some of these technologies are now mature and available for commercial implementation in operations where a strong business case can be made for the use of automation. Noranda has successfully implemented or is commissioning the Tele-remote, Auto-loading and truck Guidance technologies at two of its operations, based on operating needs and economic justifications. Operator acceptance, training and maintenance issues have been addressed in order to ensure the reliability and availability of the automation components. These represent the most significant challenges encountered and addressed during the implementation period.

It is shown that, when a flat-bottomed indentor is pressed into the surface of a strong rock, the normal force necessary to cause failure of the rock is reduced substantially if a shear force is applied to the indentor. A mathematical analysis is described, which shows that higher stresses are induced in an elastic material close to the free surface of the material ahead of a punch when a shear force together with a normal force is applied to the punch. Therefore, failure of the material would occur with lower forces applied to the punch. Stress trajectories show that fractures develop in the rock along lines of maximum principal stresses.

SAMPSON, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), B.Econ. (Visitor) A spray roaster has been installed in the Johannesburg area for the treatment of spent liquors from a variety of small pickling operations. A new process was developed for the processing of the liquor that is contaminated with zinc chloride, and a commercial plant was built incorporating this process. An ionexchange plant separates the zinc from the iron chloride, and a liquid-liquid-extraction plant converts the zinc chloride to zinc sulphate and recovers the hydrochloric acid.

A review of recent work being conducted at the university of British Columbia on the modeling of the microstructural evolution during the hot rolling of steel is presented. A mathematical model of heat transfer was developed to describe the thermal field in a slab during rough and finish rolling. The model for rough rolling, discussed in this review, also simulates the growth of oxide scale on the slab surface. Objective justification on economic grounds for expenditure aimed at improving the quality of the underground working environment requires a suitable measure of any improvement in productivity that would result under routine working conditions. For this purpose, a composite production criterion is suggested, as well as its correlation under actual operating conditions with various factors directly affecting productivity and the environment. Of the environmental factors, wet-bulb temperature appears to be the major factor affecting productivity. The production data given indicate that a decrease in the wet-bulb temperature of 1OC can be expected to result, on average, in some 3 to 4 per cent increase in productivity; in the higher temperature ranges, this percentage could be much higher.

The ongoing revision of the Respirable Dust Regulations (RDR) by the UK coal mining industry includes the introduction of personal exposure monitoring for underground mines, rather than the fixed point sampling of workplaces. The initial choice CIP10 personal respirable sampler, failed during the underground trials because of the transfer of large non-respirable particles to the respirable dust deposit under vibration from man-riding belts, and of adverse effects of high winds and high dust loading on the flowrate through the sampler. These effects were validated in laboratory simulations of these conditions. A cyclone-based personal sampler is showing promise as an alternative.
