These financial statements are the responsibility of the trustees. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. Scope We have conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements, assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, and evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion. Audit opinion In our opinion, the financial statements fairly present, in all material respects, the financial position of the trust at 30 June 2005 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice.

Tata Steel Limited which is Asia?s first and India?s largest integrated private sector steel company, as part of its vision to grow in related industries is also undertaking the Titania project. The project will involve mining, separation of ilmenite and other valuable minerals from the inland heavy mineral sands deposit in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The raw material will be beneficiated to synthetic rutile, titanium dioxide pigment and ultimately to titanium metal. The recently concluded feasibility study revealed that the deposit under consideration has 10.4%of total heavy mineral content and 15.2% slimes of the size below 63 µm, over an average sand thickness of 6.9 metres. The presence of about 15% slimes in ROM sand coupled with scarcity of water at the project site complicates the slimes handling/disposal system, requiring the development of an innovative, efficient and effective system for disposal of slimes. Mineral characteristics of slimes revealed the presence of kaolinite clay, which poses its own challenges in thickening/dewatering of slimes. This paper outlines the detailed studies conducted, including slime characterization, settling and thickening characteristics, and ge-technical studies to arrive at an efficient and effective slime handling/disposal system, with a view to plant saplings on the mined-out reclaimed land with species typically suitable to that environment.

The objective of the investigation is to optimize the truck and shovel operations for pre-stripping at New Vaal Colliery by introducing campaign mining. The aim of campaign mining is to improve the efficiency of the loading, hauling, dumping, and maintenance operations which are critical to the success of truck and shovel operations. The current loading (single-sided loading method), hauling, and dumping operations at New Vaal Colliery were found to be inefficient. Time studies were used as a major indicator to highlight the inefficiency of the truck and shovel operations, and it is recommended that an improved loading configuration, hauling, and dumping operations be implemented by using campaign mining. It is also recommended that a service truck be used to maintain the pre-stripping fleet in order to reduce travelling times to the main workshop. As expected, the improved operating conditions will lead to an increase in pre-stripping production.

It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. Since the dawn of mining, pillars have been used as primary support to ensure stable workings. Early designs were based on trial and error, after which more scientific means developed over time. A vast amount of progress has been made, especially in soft-rock room-and-pillar design methodologies, from which hard-rock design theories developed with minor changes to constant parameter values. The commonly used Hedley and Grant method for hard rock and Salamon and Munro methodology for soft rock draw on the tributary area associated with the pillar, the width-toheight ratio of the pillar, and a back-analysed strength reduction factor. In these methods, only the vertical stress, or stress normal to the pillar influences the load applied to the pillar. This investigation considers the possible influence of shear stresses on pillars in a room-and-pillar layout in single reef planes and multi-reef environments, based on elastic numerical modelling methods. The possible shear stress poses a safety and financial risk to the design process, whereby an undersized pillar would lead to unstable working conditions, whereas oversized pillars could lead to an under-utilized ore resource.

The calculation of resource volumes for large mineral sands deposits is the process of systematically compiling all known data in order to define the volume of ore contained and its intrinsic economic value. Traditionally, this process has been highly speculative in nature, as the variability of the layer thickness, even between closely spaced, boreholes can be highly variable. The issue of horizon continuity is of critical importance in mine modelling and resource definition. Accurate volume estimates are difficult to derive from drilling data alone, as the borehole spacing of an economically viable drilling programme is often greater than the spatial frequency of the variations in profile thickness. The limitations associated with this inferential approach to resource estimation can be mitigated through the use of newly developed ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods, thereby maximizing orebody optimization by reducing contamination and orebody loss. The use of GPR in the mining industry has historically been limited to shallow, high-resolution applications, such as the location of voids in limestone or the mapping of paleo channels for alluvial gold and diamonds (Francke and Yelf, 2003). These limitations have not been technology based, but rather market based, as the vast majority of GPR systems were originally designed for civil engineering applications. A new generation of GPR technology, designed specifically for maximum penetration in sand environments, is now being developed. This technology has been trialled extensively at the Richards Bay Minerals heavy mineral sand deposit in South Africa with optimistic results. The clay base of the mineral sands has been imaged to some 120 metres. Further equipment refinements are expected to yield even deeper profiling and higher resolution. The resolution offered by this technology is unique, allowing individual depositional sequences to be imaged and modelled in three dimensions. This paper will discuss the advances in GPR technology relevant to the mineral sands industry, as well as methods to optimize and integrate GPR data into existing mine models. Also addressed will be approaches to three-dimensional modelling of high-resolution GPR data and subsequent volume estimations.

"Rockbursts continue to be a major contributor to mine accidents and cause of damage to mine excavations, particularly at great depth. The problem of rockbursts has also escalated in civil engineering tunnels driven at depth, due to high levels of in situ stress at such depths. Attempts have been made in the past to mitigate the impact of rockbursts, with rock support remaining the ultimate method for providing stability in rockbursting environments. However, records show that, on many occasions, conventional support elements such as rockbolts, wire mesh, shotcrete, and lacing fail to withstand severe rockburst events.Recently, a support method termed ‘sacrificial’ support was proposed as a potential additional method to prevent rockburst damage, based on observations made after rockburst events in a mine. The philosophy behind a sacrificial support system is that, under dynamic loading conditions, support in the form of a liner must fail; leaving behind, undamaged, what was previously supported rock mass. The sacrificial support concept reported herein is applicable in situations where the source (i.e. seismic event) of the rockburst is located remote from where rockburst damage is likely to occur.Spalling tests based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique were conducted to study some aspects of dynamic rock fracturing in tension at high strain rates and the role a sacrificial layer plays in combating dynamic rock failure. A single Hopkinson pressure bar, with a long cylindrical intact rock specimen attached at the bar free end, was impacted by a striker on the opposite free end in order to generate a dynamic stress pulse responsible for spall failure upon reflection from the specimen free end. Different liners and liner combinations were then introduced at the specimen free end as support. Such a simple, yet robust, experimental set-up allowed the potential benefits and failure mechanisms associated with sacrificial support under dynamic loading to be demonstrated and compared with ‘sacrificial support’ behaviour observed in real rockburst events in a mine. Analysis of the results revealed that varying liner thickness and mechanical impedance between rock and support liner play a significant role in limiting rockburst damage."

The factors affecting haul truck tyre performance and the effectiveness of the management system at Rossing Uranium Mine were investigated with the aim of increasing tyre performance in terms of running hours until failure. The main objectives were to identify the types of tyre failure, their causes and cost implications, and evaluate the effectiveness of the management system. A site severity survey, weight study, and TKPH studies were conducted to determine the pit conditions, and an analysis of failed tyres carried out. The results showed that tyre performance at the mine has declined from 2009 to date, and the increase in lost value amounted to R5.7 million in 2012 alone. The main cause of tyre failure is loose rocks in the pit. The present management system in the load and haul department is not effective enough due to operational constraints it is facing.

Hillendale Mine is operated by Exxaro KZN Sands, and is situated on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa near the towns of Empangeni and Richards Bay, some 200 km north of Durban. During the mining operation the heavy minerals rutile, ilmenite, zircon and leucoxene are extracted for further beneficiation at a processing complex near the town of Empangeni. The deposit contains approximately 25% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction), and is mined using hydraulic monitoring. Run of mine is gravity fed down launders to pump stations, which deliver the material to a primary wet plant. Slimes is separated from the run of mine prior to the heavy minerals being separated from the sand. Sand tails containing approximately 2-5% slimes is pumped to the mining void. The slimes is thickened to a density of approximately 1.2, and most of the resultant material is pumped to a sub-aerial deposition site (residue dam). The area is characterized by an annual rainfall of approximately 1300 mm, which is relatively high by South African standards. From an agricultural perspective the soils are deep and well weathered. Dryland agriculture has been practised on an extensive scale in the area for the past 70 years. Sugar cane in particular is cultivated on and around the mine area. In terms of environmental approvals, the post-mining land use and objectives are defined as economically viable and sustainable sugar cane cultivation in the mined areas. During mining the soil profile is destroyed. In this paper the establishment of a reconstituted soil profile is discussed, with specific reference to the methodology that is being followed to achieve the homogeneous blending of sand and slimes. Defining the rehabilitation strategy and soil specification Strategically Exxaro KZN Sands divided rehabilitation into four aspects, comprising physical rehabilitation (restoration of soil structure), vegetative rehabilitation (restoration of vegetative cover), ecological rehabilitation (restoration of sustainable ecological communities), and sustainability (sustainable man/environment interface) (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). It is believed that the key to successful rehabilitation lies in achieving a substrate (soil) suitable for the establishment of the target vegetation. During the development of the rehabilitation strategy the key factor in the establishment of a suitable soil profile was shown to be the soil water retention of this material. Since dryland agriculture is practised, this aspect becomes critically important in ensuring that the post-mining land use is sustainable (Hattingh et al., in prep.). From a financial perspective, a closure certificate being issued implies that the state takes over financial liability for the rehabilitated land. This has significant implications for the state-the default position will be that all possible latent and residual impacts must be identified and known prior to a closure certificate being issued. From the mine's perspective this precautionary approach by the state implies that post-operational costs cannot be quantified exactly, and our approach is therefore to mitigate the risk of a long post-closure care and maintenance phase by means of addressing all potential latent defects during the operational rehabilitation phase. The financial viability of the soil reconstitution process itself is therefore not measured against other rehabilitation methods, but against the risk of not achieving closure. During a series of technical workshops comprising experts in the various disciplines in the rehabilitation of the soil profile were identified. These aspects include the re-establishment of a functional soil profile, soil physical characteristics, soil chemistry, soil biota, salinization potential, erodibility and soil weathering. The natural soils in the Hillendale area have been classified in terms of the South African soil classification system (MacVicar and co-workers, 1991) and consist of Hutton (orthic topsoils on red apedal subsoils) and Clovelly (orthic top soils on yellow apedal subsoils) soil forms. The topsoils consistently comprise medium to fine grained sand overlying heavier textured sandy clay loam to clayey subsoils. The topsoil structure consists of a single grain structure, whereas subsoils are apedal. These soils are typically deeply weathered and do not show secondary structures. During the mining process a layer of topsoil (300 mm) is stripped off, and the balance of the material down to the footwall is processed. Sand with 2-5% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction) is returned as backfill in order to re-establish the dune to approximate the previous landform. From an agricultural perspective this material is not suitable for the dryland cultivation of sugar cane. A capping of more suitable material therefore has to be provided. The most significant difference between the premining soil form and the backfill material is the percentage slimes, consequently a mixture of the sand and slimes is required as a capping over the backfilled sand. The required thickness of the cap is a function of specifically plant growth requirements, erodibility, weathering and runoff (Hattingh, et al.; in prep.). The percentage slimes required in the cap is a function of mainly soil water requirements (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). The conservative indications to date show that the reconstituted soil profile should consist of a homogeneously blended mixture of 70%-80% sand and 30%-20% slimes up to a maximum of 2 metres thick. This will be sufficient to ensure growth during dry periods.

"Simulation is a technique for studying the operation of systems by synthetic experimentation. With digital computers it is possible to simulate even the complex production processes in gold mining. This has great potential in that it enables the investigation, analysis and comparison of mining systems to be done accurately, rapidly and at low cost. Two programs have been developed to simulate the principal underground production processes in gold mining.These are the simulation of any stope contract and the simulation of underground transport operations. The programs synthesize these mining activities from a large number of small unit operations. The stope contract program simulates rockbreaking by drilling and blasting and the cleaning of the panels by face and gully scraping. The transport program simulates the functions and movements of all vehicles running on rails on one underground level. The simulation programs provide an effective means for experimenting with mining activities."

The mining and minerals processing industry is gradually being digitalised to improve efficiency and reduce waste. One aspect of this transition is to ensure that relevant process-data in sufficient quality and quantity is given to the operator in the right format and at the right time to improve decision-making. Augmented reality (AR) can serve as a potential ICT-based support tool for human operators to achieve this goal. With AR, virtual information is combined with the real world in real-time. Therefore, AR technology has the potential to fulfil the need for improved data visualisation in Industry 4.0. This article is the result of a collaborative effort of Chalmers University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University to identify selected state-of-the-art applications of AR that are currently being applied in the mining and minerals industry or selected related industries. This paper aims to show opportunities for the application of AR in the mining and mineral processing industry with selected conceptual applications. This paper concludes with several requirements identified as necessary to implement the conceptual applications of AR in the mining and minerals industry. Financial evaluation is necessary to investigate the viability of implementing and/or utilising new technology in mining projects. It establishes a techno-economic base for decision-making and justifies capital expenditure. This paper aims to present a monetary appraisal of the electric rock drilling system in a typical feasibility project, whose purpose is to increase the production rate. The in situ environment is a platinum orebody, and the stoping operations occur in UG2 reef. The results are a function of production requirements, technical parameters and financial outlay of the drills. The costs involved in implementing and operating electric rock drills are assessed to the current method of drilling, namely the compressed air operation. A comparison of the electric and pneumatic rock drills in terms of financial outlays for drilling and service requirements, peripheral equipping and training is discussed. Other factors that affect the business case are technical advantages, safety and risk management and the environmental objective of the company.

Backfilling at Vaal Reefs during the experimental phase has been carried out using cyclone-separated tailings which are transported underground hydraulically by means of a borehole. The selected tailings are piped from the borehole to the stope and then, after the addition of a flocculant, deposited in place via single or multiple nozzles. The successful performance of the backfill/stope system relies not only on the actual quality of the placed material, but also on the effective operation of stope filling. The success of stope filling relates to the complex, time- dependent interaction of backfill, stope and barricade materials, and the transport and placement procedures used. A comprehensive laboratory testing programme was carried out on backfill materials at Vaal Reefs in conjunction with the experimental stope- filling operation. The range of testing techniques corresponds to the requirements of each stage of the backfilling process. Where necessary, new or alternative techniques were sought during the course of the experiment to satisfy and facilitate better understanding of the different processes. These techniques comprise both routine quality control testing and research-oriented testing. The laboratory testing techniques appropriate to each stage of the backfill process are briefly discussed. This paper presents the main conclusions of the study and identifies areas for further research.

Discussion: A. Hazell (Associate Member) and T. J. Kotze (Graduate Member): The authors must be congratulated on the development of a versatile computer programme for determining the stresses and displacements resulting from mining operations. As a design tool it will no doubt take its rightful place together with the analogue computer. Union Corporation made use of this digital computer programme whilst still in its development stage to determine the stress distributions which were causing the unexpected failure of the Marievale sub-incline shaft. Two features arising from this investigation may be of interest to members, namely: A. The solution to the problem of stabilizing a rectangular inclined shaft, which turned out to be contrary to accepted mining practice, and B. A comparison between the results obtained with the pure digital system and the analogue computer. A. The shaft is nine ft high and 20 ft wide, dipping at 9° to the horizontal and crossing the bedding planes. Fig. 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 is a section of the sub-incline shaft pillar area showing the relative positions of the shaft and reef as well as their respective dips. The deepest point in the shaft is 3 300 ft below surface and the requirement of a stress free ground surface may not be satisfied. It also means that the original gravitational stresses are low. A 900 ft wide pillar was left to protect the bottom section of the shaft, the top section being understoped years ago. Extraction of the pillar was started at the beginning of last year, mining operations being carried out in the accepted manner, starting beneath the shaft and mining outwards. The approach did, however, turn out to be the wrong one, because failure of the shaft was noticed soon afterwards. Even small movements were serious in this case due to the low clearance between the skips and the shaft supports. During October, 1968, failure between benchmarks 8 and 10 (see Fig. 1) became so excessive that hoisting speeds had to be reduced. Failure continued to occur and, by the end of March, 1969, failure had propagated up the shaft as far as benchmark 7, and down as far as benchmark 12. As this shaft had a tight hoisting schedule it was imperative that a quick solution be found to arrest the failure.

The paper aims to find a sustainable sintering process through cleaner means, in order to achieve the desired outputs with zero environmental impact. At present, sintering has no control over its environmental impacts. These impacts occur when fossil fuels such as coal and coke are used in metallurgical sintering. These fossil fuels are undoubtedly effective in their assigned reducing task, but simultaneously emit about 220 kg of GHGs (greenhouse gases) per tonne of sinter produced. The current attempt has focused on reducing these emission levels by switching from coke to a renewable fuel source such as biomass. Biomass is a cleaner fuel source with a significantly lower emission footprint compared to coke. In the experimental campaign, sawdust and wood-charcoal were used in substitution for coke. Experiments were designed in a progressing substitution to obtain the maximum substitution ability without compromising the sinter properties. Sawdust as raw biomass source optimally substituted 10% of coke. The substitution levels were remarkably higher (30%) for wood charcoal due to its low moisture and high calorific values. A fuel blend with 30% biomass and remaining coke succeeded in producing a sinter with acceptable quality indices. Sinters prepared with or without biomass contribution shared an identical phase transformation and microstructures. In order to to maintain consistency in the process, every effort was made to maintain all operational and process parameters identically, except for the fuelling framework. This investigation compares the gas adsorption behaviour and capacity of three bituminous coals from South Africa, of similar rank, by assessing the characteristics of the raw coal, as well as the resulting float and sink fractions (at 1.80 cm3/g) obtained by density separation of crushed coal samples. Calculations were also made to obtain the raw coal gas storage capacity from the weighted contribution of both float and sink fractions results, thereby permitting comparison with the analysed results of the raw coal. The study demonstrated that the clean fraction of a coal has the highest capacity to retain gas in the sorbed state, followed by raw coal, and lastly the sink fraction, and re?confirmed previous investigations that showed minerals to be inhibitors of gas adsorption and retention.

Tapping a blast furnace is necessary not only to deliver the product, but is also essential for the safety of the furnace and workers in the cast-house. This paper will highlight the practices at ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in the Vanderbijlpark Works, with specific focus on tap-hole design and monitoring as well as casting practice. Extension of the tap-hole life and hearth campaign will be illustrated with reference to the methods of maintenance of the tap-holes, troughs, runners, and cast-house equipment. The importance of proper cooling, good thermocouple installation, and temperature monitoring will be explained.

This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

Tungsten carbide is a fine grey powder. It can be formed into shapes by compacting with the addition of a binder. Spherical particles are generally preferred in additive manufacturing as they pack together more efficiently than non-spherical particles, promoting a uniform powder bed density, better flowability, and elimination of internal cavities and fractures, resulting in a better quality of final product. The particle shape of powders can be transformed into spherical through the process of spheroidization. However, due to its high melting point, tungsten carbide could be difficult to spheroidize. Tungsten carbide was spheroidized using an inductively coupled radio frequency plasma at various plate powers between 9 and 15 kW. The influence of additional H2 in the sheath gas on the chemical composition of the tungsten carbide product was also investigated by means of XRD, which indicated that WC is converted to W2C at higher H2 concentrations. Optical analysis of SEM micrographs indicated that the spheroidization ratio increased with increased plasma energy.

The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.
