Deep roasting in fluid bed roasters is the first unit operation in Inco&apos;s "roast-reduction smelting" process for the treatment of nickel sulphide concentrates. The roaster product, a low sulphur calcine, is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur-deficient matte which is then converted to low (<1%) iron matte in Peirce-Smith converters. Due to the deep roasting, a minimal amount of sulphur dioxide is evolved in the smelting and converting stages. Sulphur is eliminated from the concentrate almost exclusively in the roasters in a single, continuous, strong, gas stream suitable for treatment in an acid plant. This paper discusses the commercial scale testing of deep fluid bed roasting of nickel concentrate at Inco&apos;s Thompson Smelter as part of two commercial scale campaigns on roast reduction smelting conducted in 1981-1982. Slurry feeding, practised during the second campaign, permitted excellent control of the air/concentrate ratio in the roaster and, in turn, good control of sulphur elimination (about 80% of input). Smooth autogenous operation with high oxygen efficiencies (about 95%) was promoted by operating at bed temperatures of830°C to 850°C with calcine recycle. High throughputs and the desired metallurgy were achieved. The extensive testwork conducted during the two experimental RRS campaigns demonstrated thot deep fluid bed roasting of nickel concentrate at high oxygen efficiency is a technically viable operation.

"An Expert System has been implemented to assist operators in applying knowledge about froth conditions in the control of the flotation circuit at Highland Valley Copper. For some time, the personnel at Highland Valley Copper have recognized that froth type is a useful indicator of good operating conditions. However, the operating strategy based on froth type recognition is an ad-hoc skill in which different operators use a variety of terms, features and procedures to identify and solve problems. The first phase of this project developed an on-line consultative system to advise and tutor so that the diffuse expertise could be rationalized and consolidated into a standardized format.The second phase has brought this knowledge into a real-time environment to advise the operators on the floor in identifying froth types and troubleshooting corrective action. This paper describes the steps taken to acquire the knowledge, to design the required system features and to implement the real-time version of this system.INTRODUCTIONThe use of expert systems in the mineral industry has been gaining popularity in recent years. Minnova Inc, Les Mines Selbaie, Wabush Mines, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan are just a few examples of Canadian mining companies that use expert systems to monitor or control their plants. Applications in the field of flotation include Brenda Mines (Edwards, 1992), Mt Isa Mines Ltd (Lacouture et al, 1991), Outokumpu (Karhu, 1989) and Kidd Creek (Burrows et al., 1989).Expert systems are defined as ""computer systems that apply reasoning methodologies on knowledge in a specific domain in order to render advice or recommendations much like a human expert"" (Turban, 1988). The main areas of application are diagnosis, training, process monitoring and control, and design. There are basically two main types of expert systems: Consultative systems, which are off-line applications in diagnosis and design, and on-line realtime systems, used for supervisory process control and real-time advising."

"The Bathurst-Newcastle district, a subcircular area approximately 50 km in diameter, contains 37 massive-sulfide Zn-Pb-Cu deposits that have defined tonnages, and has 58 additional significant occurrences. The largest deposit is Brunswick No. 12, with total reserves (including past production) of 148 million tonnes grading about 12.5% combined Pb-Zn. The deposits/ occurrences are spatially associated with a felsic volcanic pile that contains a significant sedimentary component. In the vicinity of the Brunswick deposits the pile is divisible into lower and upper sequences. The lower is characterized by megacrystic rhyolite (QFAS) and coarse- to fine-grained quartz (± feldspar) wackes and/or tuffites (QAS); the upper sequence is characterized by aphyric to sparsely porphyritic rhyolites (HWR), micro-breccias, and acid hyaloclastites with interbedded dark gray sedimentary rocks. A greenish gray to dark gray siltstone (GGS) separates the two sequences and hosts the sulfide deposits. Lithogeo chemistry of least altered samples shows that the QFAS and HWR have an igneous character, whereas the QAS and GGS have a sedimentary signature. The two types can be distinguished on the basis of total alkalies (Na2 + K2O) versus SiO2/Al2O3 and Ti02 versus Fe/(Fe +Mg). Some trace elements, such as Sr and Y, also help differentiate the two types. The QFAS differs from HWR by having higher La/Yb ratios but lower Zr and Th. The Bathurst deposits do not show a close spatial association with rhyolites but rather are stratiform bodies Oacking clastic textures) within fine-grained sedimentary rocks. The scarcity of barite and other sulfates indicates that there was little mixing between the metal bearing fluids and cold seawater. High Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratios in chlorites also indicate the fluids did not contain a significant seawater component. These features and the large size of many deposits suggest that the deposits formed from metal-rich pore waters that were released catastrophicallyfrom an acquifer in the footwall stratigraphy."

With the cleanest and easiest to treat copper concentrates dwindling and becoming harder to find, electrorefineries must deal with the reality of higher impurity anodes. There are well-known strategies for managing nickel, bismuth, antimony, etc. using bleeds (Ni, Bi, Sb, As) or arsenic control (Bi, Sb) or hydrometallurgical add-on circuits (IX, MRT, SX for As, Bi, Sb). However, for integrated copper producers and those producing other base metals it is often worth considering a more holistic, global approach. This paper will discuss both the well-known strategies as well as some global strategies and the role that hydrometallurgy can play in them. Examples will include atmospheric and pressure leaching, selective precipitation and impurity recycling or fixation. INTRODUCTION In the electrorefining of copper, impure copper anodes are electrically corroded, and pure copper is deposited on cathodes by passing DC current through an acidic copper sulphate solution. The anode copper impurities either settle to the cell bottom as insoluble components (anode slimes) or remain in solution with minimal deposition at the cathodes when correct operating parameters are maintained. Consideration of impurities is important in all copper electrorefineries. A typical impure anode contains 98.5–99.5% copper (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Table 1 shows the range of impurities reported for all copper anodes in the 2007 survey of operating refineries (Moats et al., 2007). Also shown is an approximate “limit” of anode compositions within which the majority of refineries operate without additional impurity removal capacity (beyond conventional liberator/bleed circuits). The column is somewhat subjective and meant to be an approximation only since there are many factors that influence impurity deportments and refinery impurity tolerances. More recent world survey data from 2013 show the averages for all impurities trending upward from 2003 to 2013 (Moats et al., 2013). With a competitive market for good concentrate and more copper recycling from electronics (which contain high levels of impurities such as nickel, lead and antimony), this trend is expected to continue through the coming years. The traditional primary method of impurity control is refinery bleed through liberator cells which are employed in the vast majority of refineries (Moats et al., 2013). These are used to control copper (primary liberators), nickel, arsenic, antimony and bismuth (secondary and tertiary liberators). Other methods of impurity control include arsenic addition (upstream in the smelter deporting to anode or directly to electrolyte) to control antimony and bismuth (Kamath et al., 2003), ion exchange or molecular recognition technology (Hur et al., 2005; Navarro et al., 2012) for antimony and bismuth. Many refineries also operate nickel evaporators to remove nickel sulphate before recycling back acid. Some use, or are contemplating using, acid purification units to recycle acid and arsenic without nickel and making nickel carbonate (Kamath et al., 2003; Sheedy et al., 2006).

BHP Olympic Dam operates a Direct-to-Blister copper flash smelting Furnace (DBF) and an Electric Slag Cleaning Furnace (ESCF). Tapping blister copper from these furnaces via tapholes is a routine task carried out by trained personnel. Blister tapping is a high-risk activity with personnel operating in close proximity to molten metal. BHP’s risk management framework has identified taphole integrity as key to managing the potential for loss of molten metal containment and molten metal – water steam explosion, both of which have the potential to cause multiple fatalities. As part of the focus on managing this risk, since 2017, a dedicated Taphole Development Team has been embedded in the operation to run an accelerated improvement program focused on safely and sustainably embedding an improved taphole design with greater integrity. The program of works includes selecting and testing of new materials as well as improving operating discipline by collaborating with tapping personnel to convert their knowledge into codified condition monitoring and operating strategies. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is being used to derive critical risk controls, and to develop live-alerts to infer excessive refractory insert wear. To date, improving DBF blister taphole mudgun clay has led to more consistent drilling depths and subsequently reduced oxygen lancing requirements, resulting in improvements in taphole insert service life. On the ESCF, insert performance testing and development of a new taphole condition monitoring strategy, is being used to increase taphole insert tonnages to more sustainable levels. Operations personnel have been closely involved in different phases of the change management, this has led to standardization of tapping practices for both furnaces, and improved ownership of the proposed changes. The paper discusses the maturity in taphole integrity risk management as a result of recent and ongoing developments. It then provides an overview of future taphole developments proposed at Olympic Dam. INTRODUCTION Tapping operations at Olympic Dam and learning from significant events The Direct-to-Blister furnace (DBF) at Olympic Dam was built with a conventional design blister taphole, which was designed for manual oxygen lancing and clay stopper bar plugging tapping operations (Campbell, 2005). Manual tapping is a high-risk activity, where personnel work in close proximity to molten metal, and molten metal personal protective clothing and equipment must be used. Opening tapholes by oxygen lancing is a skilled activity and unintentional damage to the taphole inserts can occur. Since 2008, a Mudgun and Drill unit has been developed and trialled and is now in use on the DBF blister tapholes, to remove personnel from the line of fire when opening and closing tapholes. This has the additional benefit of reducing lancing damage to taphole inserts. A new taphole design labelled the Modular Blister Taphole (MBTH) was developed at Olympic Dam for the Mudgun and Drill operation. The intent of the design was for mudgun clay to fill the entire tapping channel when plugging after a tap. The drill would then drill through this clay plug to open the taphole.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) are among the most important copper sulfides. At present, many known deposits of these minerals are uneconomic to process because they are of too low grade, insufficient size or too remote to be cost effectively treated with conventional technologies that can deal with their refractory nature. Therefore, developing an effective, low cost extraction process for recovery of copper from them is important. The research presented in this paper will deal with potentially cost effective strategies involving catalysed processing, studied under conditions relevant to recycle heap leach conditions. The present account summarises some of the main findings from the research program carried out at Murdoch University between 2014 and 2018 that has investigated the effects of the common leaching parameters, major and minor species present in the leach system and additives on the rate and extent of copper extraction from low-grade ores, in which primary copper sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite and enargite were the dominant copper minerals. The study involved batch leaching tests, detailed structural and mineralogical characterisation and thermochemical modelling under conditions relevant to heap leaching. The results have demonstrated that silver in particular has a strong catalysing effect on the extraction of copper from ore under the leach recycle conditions and, at an adequate dosage, can effectively overcome surface passivation, enabling almost complete extraction of copper from chalcopyrite as well as enargite. The aim of this paper is to present the effect of the studied additives and to briefly elaborate on the mechanism of the silver catalysed leaching process. In addition, the presence of certain secondary agents was shown to lower the critical dosage of silver and promote extraction. The data from the study allowed the development of a theory for the silver catalysed reaction mechanism, which enables further optimisation and cost-effective application of this strategy in practice. INTRODUCTION Researching the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is important as it is the most abundant copper mineral in the earth’s crust. The majority of ores containing this mineral are processed by flotation to produce a concentrate, followed by smelting and electrorefining. However, most reserves available nowadays are of low grade or limited in size, and therefore not suitable for this conventional approach. Hydrometallurgical processing via heap leaching with or without the aid of bacteria has been shown to be potentially economical. Chalcopyrite is refractory though and suffers from slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction, so understanding the mechanism of how it leaches has received significant attention by researchers working in this field over the past 50 years. The refractoriness, which is the main issue with the hydrometallurgical approach, is generally described as passivation of the chalcopyrite surface whereby a surface coating is formed that blocks the reaction interface or wetting of the chalcopyrite, limiting the copper extraction. Exactly what this layer is made of or how the issue could be overcome has been the subject of intense study and debate for many years. One of the limitations of the work to date is that much of the research focus has been on typical initial leaching conditions, while there has been relatively little research into how the leaching is affected under recycle solution conditions where certain metal ions (Fe, Mg, Al) have often accumulated in the liquor. This occurs because the leach solution exiting a heap contains many species from the dissolution of gangue minerals and typically this solution is returned to irrigate the heap, once the copper has been removed, leading to an accumulation of these species.

Green chemistry principles will be discussed, and examples will be given of the use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) to selectively separate valuable metals such as rhenium and palladium from various copper refinery feed streams. Recovery of these metals has numerous advantages including (i) conservation of valuable resources, (ii) prevention of environmental damage, and (iii) elimination of capital and operating expenses due to re-processing or disposal of metal-bearing streams. INTRODUCTION Refining of copper ores has a long and successful story. The history of copper, one of the first metals mined in human history, illustrates the global challenges faced as a result of increased demand for major metals and for by-product specialty metals found with them in trace amounts (Izatt et al., 2014). Copper has valuable properties, which have sustained its use over the centuries. It is an ideal material for creation of novel materials. Some desirable properties of copper that have proved valuable in our high-technology society include suitability for alloying with many other metals; ease of joining by soldering and brazing; good combination of mechanical qualities; high resistance to corrosion; suitability for many artistic purposes; and, of great importance in the modern era, efficient and economic use as a conductor of electricity. Copper mining in the U.S.A. began in the late nineteenth century in Montana (Izatt et al., 2014). The estimated total amount of copper mined globally before 1800 is about 5 million tons, four times less than is mined in a single year today (Flanagan, 2018). Production of copper in the U.S.A. has remained fairly constant at about 1,300,000 to 1,400,000 metric tons per annum from 2013 to 2017. Specialty metals such as bismuth, rhenium, molybdenum, and others that have become essential in our 21st century technology, and precious metals such as silver, gold, and the platinum group metals (PGMs) are concentrated by geochemical processes in trace amounts in copper ores. These specialty and precious metals were discarded into tailings in early mining operations, since limited extractive technologies existed and uses for most of them were limited. Thus, economic benefits for recovering them were limited, primarily, to silver and gold. Today, copper processing is the main, and often the only, commercial source for certain of these elements (Izatt et al., 2014). For example, molybdenite (MoS2) is the predominant ore mineral of molybdenum mining (Pohl, 2011). Cu-Mo-Au porphyry ore deposits supply ~75% of the world’s copper, 50% of the molybdenum, nearly all of the rhenium, and 20% of the gold. Typical ore grades are 0.5–1.5% copper, 0.01–0.04% molybdenum, and <1.5 g/ton gold. Molybdenite is the primary source for rhenium, among the rarest of metals, which is an essential component of super alloys, such as turbine blades in the aerospace industry (Pohl, 2011). Most rhenium is obtained as a by-product of molybdenite from copper mines in Chile. The case of rhenium raises an important issue. Continued availability of rhenium, selectively concentrated in copper ores, depends on continued mining and processing of copper. Since the mining company’s main interest is typically in copper production, continued recovery of rhenium and other specialty elements present in the ore body is at risk. Dependence of specialty metal supply on continued mining of major metals exists in several additional cases including indium, gallium, selenium, tellurium, germanium and bismuth (Pohl, 2011). PGMs, on the other hand, are typically mined for their own value, which far exceeds that of associated base metals. However, copper ores often contain marketable amounts of platinum and palladium, making their separation of interest, if this can be done economically.

The control of feed delivery quality to the flash furnace remains an unsolved problem. Many operations around the world still have limited control of feed quality to their flash furnace. Schenck Process and WorleyParsons continue to work towards the ‘holy grail’ of simple quality feed delivering both radial feed distribution and pulseless feed delivery. Ten years ago they joined forces to offer a system based on then Clyde Process RotoFeed system which could deliver ground level installation, online mixing of materials, pulseless feeding direct to the burner, with good radial distribution. Unfortunately, this proved to be too large a step for the Flash Smelting community and met with resistance from the process owners. Since then the community has developed a range of options some of which have been implemented over this period. Despite these improvements there are still areas of concern including safety issues associated with concentrate leaks and spills, uncontrolled variations in feed rate including massive flooding events, intermittent distribution improvement and set up of the burner continues to be trial and error and hard to repeat the success in each burner campaign. These continue to impact flash furnace performance globally on a daily basis. Following the community reticence to pursue the complete solution a number of interim steps are now available to pave the way to the ultimate feed system. The mixing of material has been installed and is delivering line blended materials on a daily basis. This paper will investigate the developments over the last 10 years and discuss the pros and cons of this incremental step process for overall furnace control. INTRODUCTION Schenck Process and WorleyParsons have continued to interact and observe changes in the flash smelting industry and to consider application of the Clyde RotoFeed now incorporated in the Schenck Process ProStreamTM range for delivery of feed directly to the concentrate or matte burner. Schenck Process pneumatic injection from the Clyde Process range, ProStreamTM, utilises two types of volumetric feeders to accurately control the feed of material into an injection pipeline. These are referred to as the RotoFeed and RotoScrew technologies and the choice of feeder type is dependent on the characteristics of the material to be handled. The RotoFeed is generally used for finer, granular and powdered materials which cannot be accurately handled with a screw such as pulverised coal and copper concentrate, whilst the RotoScrew is particularly suited to coarser lump materials, particularly abrasive of cohesive materials like zinc powder, electronic scrap and metal ashes. Both units can operate at high pressures and many systems work at 3 to 10 bar with the occasional system working at 20 or 30bar for carbon to gasifiers. For the Flash furnace the ProStreamTM units can be used to deliver each of the furnace feed materials into a single line, mixing the materials homogeneously and live to the burner.

Uncertainty quantification is a means of articulating the reliability of model estimations. Models of copper pyrometallurgical processes have been published for decades but discussion of their reliability has typically been terse and qualitative, mitigating understanding of their exact applicability to industrial situations. This presentation shows basic uncertainty propagation and Bayesian model calibration, two powerful uncertainty quantification tools, applied to a reduced order model of copper fire/anode refining. The implications of the uncertainty quantification analyses on the applicability of the model results to industrial practice are then discussed. Finally, other possible applications of uncertainty quantification to copper extractive metallurgy are explored. INTRODUCTION Modern copper production operations, including mining operations through wire drawing factories, are ubiquitously heavily instrumented. Most mine-sites and smelters have large repositories of historical data. That said, much of this data is not exploited to its maximum effect. This proceeding provides examples of using uncertainty quantification (UQ) to maximize the informational yield of the data collected from a fire-refining operation. Anode/Fire Refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is an essential and universally employed processing step at smelters (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). Much like the smelting and converting furnaces further up the process stream, anode furnaces are difficult to instrument due to their high temperature and the corrosive and/or caking quality of their offgas. This makes continuous and accurate measurement of the streams leaving the unit operation, e.g. liquid copper, slag, and offgas very difficult. As an example, offgas flowmeters, while providing continuous draft values, could miss the actual draft value by tens of percent due to caking or corrosion. UQ methods account for the uncertainty in process measurements and parameter values; they use a process model with measurements of performance indices to provide better and better estimations of process performance. This proceeding will first introduce a surrogate model for copper fire refining, made from a 1D, transient, reacting flow model of the process presented elsewhere in these proceedings (Mather & Krane, 2019). Discussion of the data used to make the surrogate model, as well as the creation of the surrogate model, will be included. Then, a Monte Carlo simulation will be performed, showing the expected soot production rate based on the surrogate model and assumptions about the uncertainty in the model’s parameters. Finally, the surrogate model parameters will be calibrated in a Bayesian way; this will tell what the actual uncertainty in the parameters are, given a set of observed industrial data and prior assumptions of the observations’ and parameters’ uncertainty.

"The availability and reliability of large grinding mills and their Gearless Mill Drives (GMDs) are of paramount importance for the grinding process. Although GMDs have been in service for decades, and are known for their operational efficiency (reliability and robustness with reduced operating cost per ton), compared to conventional drives, in the last decade due to certain reasons some failures led to serious unscheduled shutdowns and significant insurance events.The majority of these notable ""insured"" failures have happened on GMDs installed on relatively large mills, as the financial impact of a failure is proportional to the through-put of the mill. Despite the occurrences of these events, as mining operations are driven by lower ore grades and the ability to continue reducing operating costs per ton, the trend for having larger mills is still very present and there is no reason why this trend should not continue.It is obvious that if not handled correctly, the possibility of large value GMD loss events, coupled with the continuing increase in mill size or required availability and reliability targets, could potentially lead to major conflicts as it becomes difficult for the insurance companies to judge the risk and hence may result in hesitation to insure these grinding circuits. This paper will not only describe the conflicting situation from both an insurer&apos;s perspective and from an equipment supplier&apos;s perspective, but also how these conflicting challenges can be successfully mastered. It has to be noted that not only the mining companies themselves, but also their insurance companies and the involved equipment suppliers have a common interest: to reach the highest availability and reliability in order to avoid or at least minimize unscheduled shut down times, and most importantly prevent unplanned events that result in extended production stoppages or reductions in through-put of GMD driven mills.From the very beginning onwards, the complete service concept together with emergency plans must be integrated on every level in the design of the grinding circuit. This approach must be implemented continuously and without compromises by all involved parties during all following stages, such as basic design, detail design, manufacturing, quality inspection and testing, packing, transportation, storage, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. The concept of formal risk analysis related to mill operations, maintenance and spare parts strategies must be an integral part of mining companies’ decisions related to the selection for installation and continued use of large mills powered by GMDs. The service concept in place for operating mills shall also have a clear focus on very early detection of any abnormalities, so that the risk can be mitigated and unscheduled shutdown times avoided. However, if a major failure occurs, then procedures and tools shall already be available in order to ensure that production impact is minimized."

Brick shales and refractory clays are mined at Sumas Mountain near Abbotsford. Sholes and stoneware clays elsewhere in the province have not been developed. THE SUMAS MOUNTAIN deposit near Abbotsford, 80 km east of Vancouver, has been in continuous production since 1905. The deposit is exposed in a small outlier and comprises a sequence of alternating beds of clay and sand. Beds are of Eocene age. Within the 400 m thick ness of sediments are seven distinctive conglomerate members, some up to 20 m thick, interbedded with fine grained sediments including claystones and siltstone , or "shales". Shale is quarried to produce a variety of bricks, sewer pipes and similar products; it is also used for cement. Several different shale beds have been mined over the years and exhibit a variety of fired colours ranging from buff-pink grey to deep red; pyrometric cone equivalents (PCE) range from 3 to 20. A layer of fireclay 3 to 4 m thick that occurs at the base of the sequence has pinkish white to light buff fired colour and PCE of 30 to 33. It is used as a 266 primary component to produce refractory bricks. The shale is quarried and processed by Clayburn Industries Limited of Abbotsford. Another similar but smaller outlier of the same geological formation is known from Blue Mountain, about 20 km northwest of Mission. Other ceramic clays in British Columbia are reported from Quesnel (7 m bed of white stoneware clay, PCE 17 to 19), Giscome Rapids (25 km north of Prince George, 10 m bed of stoneware clay to PCE 31) and anaimo-Comox area (buff to red firing "shales", PCE 8 to 10-1 12) . From 1959 to 1974 Cretaceous shale from Saturna Island in the Strait of Georgia was used to produce lightweight aggregate. Similar deposits of expanding shale are known from the vicinity of Duncan on Vancouver Island.

"Rapid dampening suspension is a proposed suspension design for ultra-class haulers that is intended to avoid metal-to-metal contact inside a strut and under shock loading, thus improving ride quality and ameliorating fatigue loading issues on a hauler structure. Laboratory testing has shown the ability of the proposed design to reduce the opportunity for bottoming out, that is, metal-to-metal contact between the colliding ends of oleo-pneumatic, two-piece suspension struts during the compression cycle. This paper predicts the performance of a full-size rapid dampening suspension strut by applying scaling rules to test the proposed design based on a set of field data from a Caterpillar 797B ultra-class haul truck operating in the oil sands region of the province of Alberta, Canada. The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace (CL- furnace) for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. The conditions in the CL- furnace change its settling efficiency, resulting in high variability of copper losses in slag. Modifications of the operation and maintenance procedures for the CL-furnace have significantly and sustainably reduced the copper losses in Gresik smelter to below 0.7%. A series of flow patterns evaluation in the CL-furnace demonstrated how the chemical reactions and settling conditions of the CL-furnace has been improved by the new operating procedures. Settling mechanisms for the matte droplets in the CL-furnace is also discussed using image analysis of solidified slag. INTRODUCTION The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace (CL- furnace) for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. Since the top-blowing in the S- furnace agitates the molten bath strongly, matte droplets are dispersed over the slag phase when melts flow out of the S-furnace. Thus, the CL-furnace has an important role to settle and recover matte droplets efficiently. Since many papers have ascribed major part of copper losses to matte droplets suspended in slag (Tanaka 2007; Genevski et al., 2008; Starodub et al., 2016), flow patterns of slag in the CL-furnace can affect greatly on the profitability of smelters which have adopted the Mitsubishi process. PROCESS DESCRIPTION Figure 1 illustrates the Mitsubishi process schematically. The Mitsubishi process is the only system for continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates and consists of 3 furnaces connected by enclosed launders those ensure the minimum emission of fugitives. In a smelting furnace (S-furnace) copper concentrates are fed with flux, oxygen-enriched air to form a mixture of slag and matte which cascades down to a slag-cleaning furnace (CL-furnace). The CL-furnace settle matte droplets in the mixture on the crucible from which matte is siphoned to a converting furnace (C-furnace), while discharging the cleaned slag (CL-slag). The C-furnace converts matte to blister copper by the top-blowing of oxygen- enriched air.

Sub-Sieve Sizing by Sedimentation Procedure (As used by R. J. Digney & J. E. Ryan, 1940) Fractionation of Sub-Sieve Sizes General Method: A 1,050-gram sample of the material was pulped to 3 liters; 10 c.c. of sodium silicate and 0.2 grams of Na2C03 was added and thorough agitation given for two hours previous to settling. The material was assumed to consist wholly of particles of the same density as the most abundant particles. The time required for a particle of the upper limit of the lowest size-range to be separated, to fall a specified distance was calculated according to Stokes Law. The pulp was poured into the settling apparatus and, when the calculated time had elapsed, the suspended material was drained. The settled sediments and the process repeated until no more suspended material was obtained. The next larger size fraction was obtained in a similar manner, using the settled sediments which had been stripped of all smaller sizes as above. The fractions were arbitrarily set at 0-3, 3-13, 13-23, 23-33, and 33-43 microns (43 microns = 325 mesh).

"Several recent cases indicate that the Courts may be leaning toward a more favourable treatment of mine closing and related costs. In this article, we look at two recent cases, Burnco Industries Ltd. and Nomad Sand & Gravel Ltd. The former was heard before the Federal Court - Trial Division and the latter before the Tax Review Board.It appears that in certain situations mining companies may now be able to sustain current deductibility of estimated mine closing costs during the productive years of the mine, rather than waiting until either the date on which mining ceases or the reclamation and similar activities commence. This would be of great benefit to the mining industry, as waiting until the bitter end often means that there are no revenues available against which the expenses may be offset and, hence, no tax relief.IntroductionUnder the Income Tax Act in Canada, taxpayers are not permitted any deductions in respect of an outlay or expense in determining income from a business or property, except to the extent that such expenditures are made or incurred by the taxpayer for the purpose of gaining or producing income. In addition, no deductions are permitted for amounts transferred or credited to a reserve, contingent account or sinking fund except as expressly permitted by the Act.In large measure, these provisions are relevant to the mining industry to the extent that they determine the periods during which expenses may be charged against revenues for income tax purposes. "With Inco recording record profits over the past year, most people have forgotten the painful years of the last recession/depression when Inco was losing up to a million dollars a day for a short period . While high nickel prices have contributed to the exceptional recent profits, the real achievements stem from the tremendous advances in productivity and cost improvements that make Inco one of the lowest cost nickel producers.Some of the major advances in productivity have occurred in the mines. The establishment of Mining Research Departments in both Thompson and Copper Cliff in 1979/80 provided the stimulus and the opportunity to dedicate personnel to specific research projects, on a full-time basis; and more particularly to concentrate on the efficiency of the total mine system. The Copper Cliff North Mine was brought back into production as a research mine dedicated to the development and testing of new mining methods and equipment. A shop facility known as the ""Murray Shop"" was set up as the centre of innovation for the development and construction of prototype equipment required for new bulk mining methods. While other expenditures were being curtailed , investment in mining research was being increased. An early success was an ""in the hole"" drill that could be broken down into small components to access even the remotest sectors of a mine to convert labour intensive undercut-and-fill mining to "" vertical crater retreat "" , VCR, bulk mining. A new mine manufacturing company-Continuous Mining Systems-was incorporated with the objective of building innovative mining equipment, with strong focus on automated continuous sytems. Continuous Mining Systems has now grown to a $25 million per year business. With these synergistic thrusts, the VCR bulk mining method was implemented in all of the Ontario Division mines, raising the percentage of ore mined by bulk mining techniques from 320/0 in 1981 to over 90% today. Coupled with re-designed job responsibilities, sup- ported by appropriate training, mine productivity more than doubled. It was discovered that VCR mining could be adapted to the narrower Thompson mine ores with identical improvements in productivity. Development of the Thompson Open Pit North had an additional favourable impact on production cost s in Thompson. The timing of the open pit development could not have been better. It permitted Inco to rapidly increase production at high productivity and low cost, in years of record demand and prices."

"Malcolm Knowles, the famous adult educator once wrote: ""What a challenge we in human resources development face if we are to avoid the obsolescence of our workforce. I can foresee this challenge requiring that we reconceptualize (...) and redefine the role of HRD, away from that of managing the logistics of conducting training activities to that of managing a system of learning resources"".The context in which this was written surrounds the subject of adult education and the need for business and industry to change its approach to the treatment of adults as learners. In explaining what &apos;managing a system of learning resources&apos; means, Knowles refers to line supervisors and managers as the most ubiquitous resources for day-in and day-out employee development. In many organizations training has been largely a staff rather than line responsibility. Even where trainers reported to line management, it was still seen as a staff function performed by a few specialists.This change referred to by Knowles places a much heavier responsibility on line supervisors and managers for the development of their personnel than has traditionally been the case. Managing that change - handing over the responsibility to the line organization - is the supreme challenge for the HRD function.Just why is this change necessary? Because too often, the learner does not effectively use on the job what he or she learned in the classroom. In fact, learners often discard new methods and revert to the older ways. The reason training does not stick is that the systems for training and work management are most often separate entities and while one may support the other, they need to be a single integrated system in order to ensure the transfer to the job effectiveness of training and some real value for the training dollars.Because much training can be wasted, steps have to be taken to ensure that it fulfills its intended purpose. The effective and continuing application of knowledge and skills that learners acquire can only be realized when line supervisors and managers are at the centre of the training system.This paper describes how such a systemis being developed at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) as a functional training program is introduced. The following text provides background information on the IOC - who they are and where they are located, a definition of functional training, an evaluation of the suitability of this approach for adults in industry, a description of how the program is being implemented at IOC and some observations that have been made as this change is experienced."

Sedimentary phosphate-bearing rocks are found over a considerable area of so utheastern British Columbia that extends from Fernie east to the Alberta-British Columbia boundary and from the International Boundary northward to the headwatei: s of the Elk River. Phosphatic beds occur at the following four stratigraphic levels: 1. lower part of the Banff-Exshaw sequence of Mississippian age; 2. lshbel Formation of Permian age; 3. base of the Fernie Group of Jurassic age; 4. belemnite bed within the Rock Creek Member of the lower part of the Fernie Group. To date, considerable tonnages of phosphate rock have been proven in the area. However, no commercial production has been initiated because of a relatively low P2O5 grade. Data on assays and thicknesses of the phosphatic beds are in part recalculated from the paper by Telfer (I 933) and in part from assessment reports filed at the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

The development of set of laboratory experiments, intended to help undergraduate students meet Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board requirements for Engineering Design outcomes, is described.The laboratory, which is part of a third year level course in hydrometallurgy, is aimed at advancing the ability of students to generate and use experimental results to design an industrial copper leach/SX/EW plant. Emphasis is placed on the students demonstrating the ability to use of their engineering knowledge in weighing the pros and cons of the various process options that they test in converging to a final flowsheet. INTRODUCTION Over the past number of years the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, CEAB, has dramatically shifted the way that they evaluate undergraduate programs. In the past, the focus was on measuring of the quantity and quality of material the students were intended to learn as well as the methods and resources used to deliver that material. Now, rather than principally evaluating the inputs of programs, the focus is more on measuring the quality of the outputs from the programs, i.e. the quality of graduating students. In this regard, the CEAB has developed a list of twelve attributes that learners must develop in the course of their studies. Engineering programs must, not only demonstrate that their curriculums provide opportunities to develop these attributes, but must measure student proficiency in each of these attributes as they progress toward graduation. One particular graduate attribute that Laurentian University’s Bharti School of Engineering has encouraged its faculty members to develop content for is “design”. Engineering Canada (2018) defines this attribute as “an ability to design solutions for complex, open-ended engineering problems and to design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate attention to health and safety risks, applicable standards, and economic, environmental, cultural and societal considerations”. The previous laboratory component for the hydrometallurgy course was a collection of unconnected experiments covering leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and electrowinning. Like in other undergraduate courses, students would perform stand-alone experiments, make the specified measurements, do the specified analyses of the results, and report the findings, all as strictly detailed in the lab manual. The vision for the new lab was to create an experience that would more closely mimic an industrial research program whereby students would start with a given feed material and would progress through a series of connected experiments. Emphasis is placed on the student demonstrating competency in, not only, generating and analyzing experimental data, but also in using the data along with their engineering knowledge to design and evaluate the pros and cons various plant configuration options. Principally, students are asked to weigh cost, safety, and environmental concerns in converging to their final flowsheet. In designed the leach circuit, students must weigh the costs/benefits of varying leach temperature. Higher leach temperatures will yield faster and more complete copper dissolution, which will allow for the specification of relatively smaller leaching circuits, saving capital costs. However, hotter acid solutions are more dangerous to handle and require increasing amounts of energy to heat the slurry, increasing operating costs. In solid/liquid separation, students must weigh the pros and cons of the addition of a flocculent to assist settling. The flocculant will allow for the design of a thickener circuit that employs units with a relatively smaller area, but will result in a thickener underflow with a lower pulp density, which may necessitate a larger number of thickeners. In addition, the environmental concerns of producing a tailings product that contains an organic contaminant should be addressed. In solvent extraction, students must specify the number of stages of loading and stripping, as well as organic and aqueous flowrates to produce suitable raffinate and rich electrolyte streams. Finally, in electrowinning, students will compare the costs/benefits and risks of the use of precious metal coated titanium dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs) versus conventional Pb based anodes.
