The use of artificial intelligence (AI) for process optimization is expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of the mining industry. The objective of AI is to develop a data driven soft (virtual) sensor using historical data that can estimate unmeasurable characteristics of the process and provide appropriate recommendations during operation to optimize the process through continuous learning. The application of AI to a hydrometallurgical process was evaluated by Sherritt Technologies in coordination with NTWIST. Historical operating data obtained from the Ambatovy facility’s High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) circuit was used to develop models to predict autoclave discharge parameters based on operating conditions and ore mineralogy. The prediction models were developed in such a way to also allow the user to simulate and test different operating conditions. A second set of models (AI model) were developed based on the prediction models, economic data and operating constraints for a given process unit to identify optimal reagent and steam dosages across the HPAL circuit. The development of these models was significantly complex due to the dynamic and interactive nature of the HPAL process. Despite the complexity of the models, the models were able to predict, with accuracy, the relationship between ore composition, leach autoclaves retention time, acid addition and steam addition with metal extractions as well as levels of impurities in the autoclave discharge slurry. The study showed that AI has the potential to improve the overall operation of a facility through providing tools to assist with training, troubleshooting and process optimization. INTRODUCTION The Ambatovy project, located in Madagascar, is one of the world’s largest nickel and cobalt mining and processing operation, with a design capacity of 60.000 tonnes of nickel and 5,600 tonnes of cobalt per year (Collins et al., 2016). Commissioning and start-up of the Ambatovy mine and plant facilities were completed in 2012, with acid first introduced to the ore leach in March 2012. Commercial production (defined as 70% of design capacity) was achieved in January 2014 and the production level required to achieve financial completion (90% of design capacity for 90 days) was achieved in March 2015 (Valle et al., 2016). Figure 1 shows a simplified flowsheet of the hydrometallurgical pressure acid leach (PAL) process employed by Ambatovy.

"Since many years, the Yvan-Vézina gold plant custom mills and processes different ore types that show different behaviors. Because of this, cyanidation control is more complex than for a typical milling operation. In 1992, a Cyancor™ on-line « free cyanide » analyzer has been installed for monitoring and optimizing cyanidation. This implementation significantly reduced cyanide consumption for the overall cyanidation process. In order to further reduce cyanide costs, an automatic control strategy has been implemented to decrease fluctuations of« free cyanide » from their set points.This paper outlines the major steps of the project: process control audit, control strategy development, implementation and running-in period. Control strategy features include data filtering modules, adaptive PID algorithm and set points management modules are also presented. Finally, the strategy efficiency is illustrated with load-disturbance responses.IntroductionLocated in northwestern Quebec, the Yvan-Vézina plant has an average capacity of 1300 t/d using carbon-in-pulp technology. In 1991, the Yvan-Vézina gold plant was processing three types of ores (Beauchemin, Mouska and Silidor mines) and a pyrite concentrate (Beliveau mine). A cyanide reduction program was then undertaken to reduce « free cyanide» fluctuations <6>. To reach this objective, the optimum cyanide concentration was determined for each ore, a continuous monitoring method with the Cyancor™ on-line analyzer was developed and a tighter control of cyanide addition was applied. These modifications to the leaching practice significantly reduced cyanide consumption.After a while, it was observed that regulation of « free cyanide » concentrations could still be improved by the use of an automatic control strategy. Yvan-Vézina and CRM began collaborating in 1995 to develop and implement such a strategy. Results show that main disturbances of the circuit (e.g. ore mineralogy and pulp feed rate) can be significantly overcome in order to reduce their effects on the leaching operation."

JX Nippon Mining and Metals Corporation has developed the JX Iodine Process, which is an innovative and patented copper-leaching process for low-grade primary sulfide ores. This process consists of the irrigation of ferric iron and a low concentration of iodide solutions. One-meter column leaching tests were conducted on ore samples from two different mines. At the end of experiments, the total copper recovery exceeded 70% for Sample A and 50% for Sample B with the iodine method, which was significantly higher than that with conventional ferric leaching of 14% for Sample A and 20% for Sample B. To elucidate the reason for the JX Iodine Process effectiveness, cross sections of leached residues were studied. Reaction products were confirmed around chalcopyrite even in the central area of particles in Sample A, however, reaction products were recognized at a depth of only 1 mm from the ore rim in Sample The resistance of Sample A to the leachate appeared to be lower than that of Sample B because Sample A had a high permeability and porosity, whereas Sample B had been affected strongly by a potassium alteration. No reaction products were visible on conventional leaching samples, even at the ore surfaces. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper leaching (heap leaching or dump leaching) has been used extensively for copper recovery from oxide and secondary-sulfide ores, but not for primary copper sulfides, which contain mainly chalcopyrite as copper minerals. Although they are major resources of copper, primary copper sulfides are difficult to process because of their refractory nature. Extensive leaching studies have been carried out to leach primary copper sulfides (chalcopyrite), including biological and chemical, using a variety of oxidants and additives to enhance copper recovery. Watling (2013) reviewed acid-chloride-oxidizing agents with chalcopyrite. Abdollahi et al. (2015) tested silver as a catalyst for bioleaching with a chalcopyrite-bearing molybdenite concentrate. Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima and Tsunekawa (2000) found a specific redox-potential zone for high-speed chalcopyrite leaching by controlling the ratio of ferric and ferrous iron. However, no ambient-temperature economic process has been developed for leaching primary copper sulfide, which usually has a low copper grade.

"The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of CuPb- Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyritechalcopyrite- arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to mediumscale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofmg of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Ma to 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization."

"Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming a reality in the mining industry. Widely adopted in the manufacturing and services industries, TQM has become the operating style of choice in numerous mining companies across the Americas and Australia. Iron Ore Company of Canada, Inco, MSA, Graniterock, Magma Copper, and CRA&apos;s Hamersly Iron - all are pioneers of TQM. These companies and others are confronting the challenges of implementing TQM and are managing the changes required of their people and cultures. What these companies are doing, why they are doing it, and how they are successfully managing the changes are the subjects of this paper.Driving the need for change in these organizations are a host of issues, some of which all mining companies are facing. Requirements from customers for ISO 9000 certification is becoming one of the initial motivators for Total Quality Management. These standards, commonly used in manufacturing throughout the European Community (EC), emphasize quality in the processes that create outputs, instead of just the outputs themselves. Iron Ore Company of Canada, for instance, responding to the requirement of one of its customers, British Steel, has become one of the first mining companies to meet the quality standard. Suppliers who meet the standards are highly desirable to customers who are themselves operating under the ISO or their national quality guidelines."

The main thrust of this presentation is to illustrate the growing contribution of solar energy to the mining industry by replacing existing mechanical and pneumatic tools and equipment with more effective and efficient electrical tools due to the increased efficiency and lower cost of solar energy generation. LCOE (levelized cost of energy/electricity) for solar energy is becoming highly competitive with other conventional sources of energy. The distributed architecture of solar power plants allows the supply of energy to highly remote and abandoned geographies. We will focus on the trend for this contribution to the mining industry over the next three years. Water desalination and delivery to the mining area will be topic of discussion regarding the contribution of solar systems in Latin America (LATAM) and other geographies. INTRODUCTION Increasing price pressure on the mining industry has generated a strong interest for mining companies to investigate energy costs and consumption. Currently, energy costs in mining economics contribute15% to 25% of the total commodity cost. In the past, most mines were operated by diesel gensets. Very high logistics costs for diesel supply, high and fluctuating diesel prices and theft led to very high energy prices. To overcome this problem, the mining industry has turned to solar energy, employing two main solutions: (i) adding a small scale (single level MWp energy supply) solar to an existing diesel system to create a hybrid solution operating as a microgrid environment; and (ii) replacing the existing diesel system with a large scale grid connected photovoltaic system financed by utilities or private IPP owners that signed a long-term power purchase agreement (“PPA”). In both applications, the near-term trend is to add storage and weather controls to optimize the electrical performance of the system. Use of concentrated solar solution (CSP) in the past was employed in a few remote sites to provide electrical energy to the mines. Currently this technology is not competitive with the photovoltaic (PV) systems. In some installations we have seen usage of a small hybrid system that is designed as relocatable, containerized and delivers scalable electrical power. In addition to the evolution of electrical energy sources, we see the trend of reduction of energy consumption in the mines by optimizing energy efficiency and generating load shifting solutions. Many studies of electrical energy in the mining industry support the growth of this trend in the mining industry.

The beneficiation of rare earth (RE) element bearing minerals has become an active area of research as applications for these elements grow while the supply to non-Chinese consumers is restricted by export quotas. One of the most interesting beneficiation techniques for RE minerals is froth flotation as their unique chemistry suggests that collectors with a specific affinity for RE cations should be able to selectively recover these minerals. Existing literature, focusing mainly on bastnäsite flotation, identifies hydroxamic acids as excellent collectors for RE minerals. The high stability of hydroxamate-RE cation complexes is the explanation most often offered for the observed selectivity of these reagents in bastnäsite flotation however some research has also suggested that mineral solubility plays a crucial role in the success of hydroxamic acid flotation of RE minerals. This work investigates the interaction of allanite, a relatively insoluble RE-silicate mineral, with benzohydroxamic acid using zeta potential measurements and microflotation. The effects of Fe(III) and Fe(II) ions as potential activating ions (cations that form stable hydroxamate complexes) on benzohydroxamic adsorption to the allanite surface are investigated as a potential solution to promote hydroxamic acid adsorption. The results indicate that the optimum conditions for separation of allanite from quartz occur at pH 4 using FeCl2 as an activator for benzohydroxamic acid adsorption.

Many leading copper and other mineral processors have rapidly adopted advanced controls in last 5-10 years. Almost 600 multivariable predictive controls have been installed in mineral processing, and almost 50% of those are in copper concentrator plants. In most cases, mineral processors rely on 3rd party support to implement these advanced technologies. One challenge facing advanced control user is the selection providers and services for these technologies. The trend has been towards the use of multivariable predictive control and use of technology provider’s services. This paper will discuss status of advanced control, and the merging trends in the mining industry. A review will be presented of how advanced control is being applied in the mining industry over the last decade, and how user challenges are being overcome. Next the emerging uses of multivariable predictive control (such as multi/inter-unit optimization), focusing on the latest trends in concentrator plants. Finally, a review will be made of emerging technology advances in the that can be advantageous to mineral processors. INTRODUCTION Review of advanced control in mineral processing Advanced controls are serving an increasing role to improve processing plant operations and profitability. As advanced control is being installed into more mining processing plants such as copper concentrators, many of these plants are concerned about the selection technologies and vendors to support the installation and maintenance of these controls. In a study by Jonas and Craw (2011), they found that most new users have not had prior experience with advanced controls. It is the author’s experience of almost 30 years in advanced controls that most mineral processers considering advanced controls can benefit from better understanding of the technologies and their support requirements.

"The national reactive tailings (RATS) program is a co-operative industry-government effort to develop practical techniques for closure of reactive tailings areas. This paper summarizes the RATS program objectives and areas of research, and details the Noranda/CANMET project on the Waite Amulet tailings.Geophysical and biohydrogeochemical investigations were carried out at an inactive copper-zinc mine tailings site, Waite Amulet, in Noranda, Quebec. Geophysical investigations consisted of seismic, electromagnetic conductivity and electrical resistivity surveys to determine the thickness of the layers above bedrock and to map conductivity variations within the tailings and the immediate outlying area. Biohydrogeochemical investigations consisted of installing multilevel piezometer nests to determine groundwater flow patterns and porewater chemistry, obtaining solid core samples and characterizing for physical, chemical and mineralogical parameters, and iron oxidizing and sulphate reducing bacterial counts.The geophysical survey indicated a bedrock ridge extending under the tailings from the northeastern outcrop which may act as a porewater boundary layer. The survey also indicated a 2 to 20 m clay layer underlying the main tailings dam. Preliminary results of the saturated zone porewater chemistry have indicated three major zones of high electrical conductivity varying between 1,000 to 12,000 µs and pH between 3.4 to 8. Lower pH and high metal and sulphate concentrations were obtained in a shallow zone near the water table. With depth, the concentration of metal and sulphate ions decreased and pH increased below the water table. The underlying clay layer is relatively impervious -and most of the seepage from the tailings is probably exiting from the sides of the impoundment dam."

"Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate is employed in a wide variety of sulphide flotation procedures due to the specificity over other xanthates and the cost savings over other sulphide collectors such as thionocarbamates, xanthogen formates and dithiophosphates. An investigation carried out by Tennants Research Technology Applications (TRTA), has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX that has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries.Currently, FLEX 31 is manufactured at the Prospec Chemicals xanthate plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Prospec, founded in 1983, produces approximately 4500 tonnes of xanthates per year and is presently undergoing expansion to produce approximately 6000 tonnes. The proprietary process for FLEX 31 is a new addition to plant operations that include the production of xanthates, thionocarbamates and xanthogen formates.This paper will cover the testwork on the zinc flotation circuit at the Louvicourt Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec. This testwork indicated that FLEX 31 could replace SIPX due to the ability of the FLEX to improve zinc flotation kinetics without adversely affecting final concentrate grade. FLEX has presently replaced SIPX in the zinc circuit at Louvicourt.BackgroundThe Louvicourt deposit is hosted by greenschist facies Archean volcanic rocks located in the southeast portion of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. In the Val d'Or area, the volcanic rocks form an east-west striking, steeply dipping and south-facing sequence composed of thick mafic and ultramafic flows of the Lower Malartic Group.The joint venture has three partners-Aur Louvicourt Inc. (30%), Novicourt Inc. (45%) and Teck Corp (25%). Aur Resources holds 30% interest through Aur Louvicourt, a wholly owned subsidiary and is the operator of the project. Novicourt Inc. is 60.9% held by Noranda.Approximately 75% to 85% of Louvicourt's revenue comes from the sale of copper; 10% from gold (in the copper concentrate); 7% from zinc and 3% from silver (also in the copper concentrate) The copper at Louvicourt is fairly ""fast floating"". About 60% of the copper in the ore can be concentrated in the first flotation cells with feed grades of approximately 4% copper.The initial testwork and pilot trials had indicated that it would be difficult to achieve zinc grades over 52% and recoveries would have to be kept at a level amenable to salable concentrate grades. The actual mill results, with a fine regrind, achieved zinc grades of 55% to 56% at about 75% recovery."

Numerous asbestos occurrences are known, and the Cassiar Mine in Northern British Columbia has been a major producer since 1952. The Kutcho Creek deposit is a large medium-grade deposit of potential economic interest. OF THE numerous British Columbia asbestos occurrences, only one mine exists. Another property, at Kutcho Creek, may be commercially viable. Cassiar Mine, in the northern part of the province, has been producing high-quality asbestos since 1952 and is described elsewhere in this volume. The Kutcho Creek property is situated north of Letain Lake about 125 km southeast of Cassiar Mine. The Kutcho Creek asbestos deposit comprises zoned chrysotile fibre veins in a well jointed and locally sheared serpentinite sill. The sill intrudes, more or less concordantly, a sequence of Devonian to Mississippian argillaceous Industrial Minerals in Canada metasedimentary, calcareous, and volcanic rocks. The light to dark green serpentinite contains crossfibre chrysotile veins that are usually less than 1 cm in width but up to several metres in length. Typical sections in exploration drillholes grade between 2.5 and 3.0 per cent fibre. According to the last assessment report submitted, test results indicate that the Kutcho Creek property may contain a large, medium-grade asbestos deposit of potential economic interest.

"For many years the training of mill operators was an informal process which involved senior operators training junior operators on an as-needed basis. Recognizing the needs and benefits of better training some companies, and even some provinces through legislation, have moved to ensure that a formalized training program exists in the plants. These programs tend to focus on basic safety and operations. Much remains to be done. With the more rapid incorporation of new processing and information technologies, and the goal to keep labour costs to a minimum by doing more with less, operator training has become a critical issue. This paper briefly examines the evolution of training programs, provides some measure of their effectiveness, and explores some recent developments which could have a very significant impact on the industry.PreambleOne can draw an analogy between operator training and the mechanical support of production equipment. When we buy a piece of process equipment it is critical that the mechanical installation be done properly to ensure that the device will operate at peak performance on start-up. Once the equipment is running, some form of preventive maintenance is required to ensure continued efficient operation. The operators and the equipment are both elements of the processing system, yet the former do not seem to get the same ""start-up"" or ""operating"" support. Are they not seen as critical to efficient operation? Why is this so? What impact does it have? How can we improve?These are all very logical and important questions, although the answers are not nearly so obvious. In the mineral processing industry, progress in operator training over the past thirty years has been limited and quite variable. To address the perceived need for a more coherent and consistent approach, some provinces have moved to incorporate basic training requirements in their legislation. Some plants have gone a few steps further by building integrated training programs into their operating culture. One conclusion which can be easily reached is that there are no standards, and that the range of training activity is great. In other words, a flotation operator is not a flotation operator is not a flotation operator. Their knowledge and skills are very much a function of training and experience, which are clearly corporate and site specific."

"In September 1993, the flash furnace at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, KNS, was brought off line after almost 12 years of operation. This is a record campaign life for a flash furnace. The furnace was&apos; totally rebuilt and the capacity of the plant increased from 540 000 tpo to 750 000 tpa of concentrate throughput. The throughput increase was&apos; achieved through the construction of a 525 t/day oxygen plant and upgrading of various plant ancillaries. A number of significant design modifications were also built into the flash furnace and oxygen enrichment was implemented in the operation of the Peirce-Smith converters.This paper discusses the rebuilding of the flash furnace and design modifications made to furnace equipment and ancillary plant. Some preliminary post-startup operating data are presented.IntroductionIn September 1993, Campaign 6 of the flash furnace was concluded and the furnace brought off line for rebuilding. The campaign length was almost 12 years and set a new record for campaign length. Planning for the rebuild took place over the last five years of the campaign. A number of modifications to the design of the furnace and the ancillary plant were planned to coincide with the furnace rebuild. The furnace was rebuilt and recommissioned in 70 days. The increased plant capacity of 750000 tpa has been achieved by the construction of a 525 t/day oxygen plant and modifications made to ancillary plant which centred around increased p~ control, efficiency and hygiene. This paper examines the development and implementation of the modifications made to the furnace and ancillary plant. Preliminary post-shutdown performance data are presented."

"An information system has been developed for the use of companies considering developing a new mine which may be liable to secondary sulphide ignitions or by existing operations. The system uses the Comdale X expert system to analyze information about a particular mine. The system will indicate whether the mine is likely to experience ignitions and what precautions can be taken to reduce or prevent their occurrence. The advantage of an information system using expert system and artificial intelligence principles is that it can recommend action when there is an incomplete knowledge of all the system parameters. By interrogation of the user it can determine the state of knowledge and react accordingly. It is considered that such systems could be of significant use in mine planning for new and existing properties, especially where operators have limited expertise regarding secondary sulphide ignitions. IntroductionSulphide ignitions occur in the underground mines of several countries, including Australia, Canada, Finland, South Africa and the United States of America (1·3) and there has been a significant increase in their number and severity over the last decade(2.4). The basic causes of such ignitions are not well understood and man incidents are not reported or documented.Sulphide ignitions can pose a serious threat to the health and safety of mine workers and to the cost and efficiency of the mining operation (1-5). Byberg(6) described the three major problems associated with sulphide ignitions as:1. the force of the initial explosion can endanger workers and equipment;2. the intense heat of the ignition&apos;s flame front can endanger workers and equipment and may also ignite combustible material resulting in mine fires; and3. the sulphur dioxide produced by the ignition may be of such quantity and concentration to endanger workers, as was tragically demonstrated at Geco. In this incident in October 1985, a worker was killed at a position 2400 metres from the ignition point of a sulphide ignition at Manitouwadge, Ontario."

"Abstract—Detailed oxygen isotope mapping of rhyolites in and around the Kidd Creek mine indicates that the orebodies are associated with relatively low (<12‰) whole rock values that extend up to 200 m laterally from ore. The zone of low d18O values is overlain stratigraphically by a carapace of higher (>13‰) values that extends up to 1.5 km laterally from and 300 m to 500 m above ore. Immediately above the stratigraphically highest orebody this carapace is cut by a zone of lower d18O values extending from the ore zone. Zones of higher d18O values also occur in massive rhyolite bodies that occur in the footwall of the orebodies.The zone of low d18O values partly coincides with a Na2O depletion anomaly associated with hydrothermal alteration, except that the Na2O depletion anomaly has a greater lateral extent, and the low d18O anomaly extends farther into the stratigraphic hanging wall. These data suggest that d18O mapping may detect hanging wall alteration above massive sulfide bodies more effectively than conventional lithogeochemistry. Zones of high d18O values, which define zones through which large quantities of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids have passed, may also have usefulness in exploration.Oxygen isotope variations at Kidd Creek record three stages of a hydrothermal system that evolved in temperature with time, as follows: (1) an early, low-temperature event that produced rocks with high d18O values, (2) a high-temperature event that produced rocks with lower d18O values, and (3) a later, low-temperature event that also produced rocks with high d18O values. The high d18O signature of the massive rhyolite was recorded during early-stage, low-temperature (<200°C) alteration, and was probably preserved owing to decreases in permeability associated with low-temperature silicification. The low d18O signature of cherty breccia and chloritite was recorded during the thermal peak at >300°C. High d18O values in the carapace above the deposit were recorded as the hydrothermal system waned."

In this work, we present a phase field model to simulate the facetted crystallization of Fe3O4 in a quaternary FeO-Fe2O3-Cu2O-SiO2 melt under different partial pressures of oxygen. An important focus in creating more realistic phase field models is the incorporation of the thermodynamic driving forces in multicomponent multiphase-field models by coupling to thermodynamic databases. The diffusion of FeO, Fe2O3 and Cu2O is considered. The ratio of FeO/Fe2O3 at the upper boundary is in equilibrium with the oxygen fugacity of the atmosphere, while conserving Fe. Two-dimensional simulations are performed with different varying oxygen fugacity in the atmosphere. For the considered composition range, the growth velocities of the spinel crystals increase with decreasing oxygen fugacity. INTRODUCTION Crystallization of silicate melts has its applications in geology, pyrometallurgy and glass making. In pyrometallurgy, the solidification of slags influences the freeze lining behaviour (Campforts et al., 2007) and the cooling of slag after tapping (Durinck, Jones, Blanpain, & Wollants, 2008). Modeling of silicate melt crystallization is frequently done on the macroscopic level, using thermodynamic equilibrium calculations to determine the fractions of all phases as a function of temperature. The Factsage software and database package (Bale et al., 2016, 2009, 2002) already proved its usefulness in pyrometallurgical applications, for example to model the phase mixture after solidification of a stainless steel slag (Durinck et al., 2008). Crystallization of phases typically results in complex morphologies on the mesoscale, e.g. dendrites or facetted growth. On this mesoscale, the phase field concept has proved to be a very powerful tool (Moelans, Blanpain, & Wollants, 2008) for modeling crystallizing microstructures, because it can treat arbitrarily complex interface shapes with minimal mathematical complexity. In contrast to macroscopic models, the diffusion profiles and crystallization kinetics can be described as well as the morphology of individual crystals. First, Kobayashi (Kobayashi, 1993) simulated a growing dendrite in a pure undercooled metallic liquid. Then, Warren and Boettinger (1995) simulated a dendrite in an isothermal system considering a binary alloy. The extension to multi-phase systems was done by Steinbach et al. (1996). This was further extended by Tiaden, Nestler, Diepers, and Steinbach (1998) to a framework with coupled diffusion and phase field equations in multi-component systems.

Abstract - The Bermuda Zn-Pb showing is hosted by dolomitized Blue Fiord Formation of Devonian age, located east of the Ensorcellement dome on the Grinnell Peninsula of Devon Island. Fluid inclusions in hydrothermal calcite indicate that the mineralization precipitated from low-temperature, highly saline brines. The ?34S compositions of sphalerite, galena, and marcasite range from 16.1‰ to 35.2‰. Consequently, the Bermuda showing is interpreted to be Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) mineralization. The apparent age of mineralization has been determined by the Rb-Sr method from sphalerite separates, and a Late Devonian age of 357 ± 50 Ma (MSWD=65), with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7083 ± 0.0020 is indicated. This date, within error, is the same as the Polaris deposit. This suggests that the mineralization formed during the Ellesmerian Orogen, although it is also possible that mineralization is associated with extension, related to the opening of the Sverdrup basin. The strontium and sulfur isotopes and fluid inclusion analyses indicate the involvement of a brine that acquired its salinity from interaction with evaporites, lower in the stratigraphic succession. The Polaris mine is the type deposit in the Cornwallis Zn-Pb district and is hosted by the Thumb Mountain Formation. The results of this study are significant because they demonstrate that regional brine movement is more widespread than previously recognized, and that MVT mineralization in the Cornwallis Zn-Pb district is not restricted to the Thumb Mountain Formation.

"The Kipawa yttrium-zirconium prospect is located about 150 km south of Noranda, Quebec. Yttrium-zirconium mineralization occurs in an elongate, regionally metamorphosed and deformed peralkaline complex in the Grenville terrain. The mineralized zone, as defined by =.0.10% Y2O3, is 1300 m long and 10 m to 30 m wide. Zirconium content typically ranges from 0.50 to 1.20% ZrO2, The mineralized zone strikes northwest and dips 20 degrees to 35 degrees to the southwest. It occurs at the structural base of the peralkaline complex in syenite gneiss and calc-silicate rocks and is conformable with both the footwall contact of the complex, and the layering and gneissosity in the enclosing rocks. Minerals of economic interest are eudialyte (sodium-zirconium silicate), mosandrite (sodium-titanium silicate), britholite (calcium-silica phosphate), and a few other uncommon zirconium and titanium silicate minerals.The highest and most continuous yttrium grades occur in the upper part of the syenite gneiss unit in areas containing eudialyte, mosandrite and minor britholite. Yttrium also occurs in britholite in calc-silicate rocks and in mosandrite in syenitic rocks in the lower part of the syenite gneiss unit. Both the yttrium-bearing minerals and yttrium grades are erratic in the lower part of the unit. Zirconium is generally more uniformly distributed than yttrium. A peralkaline granite gneiss phase of the complex intrudes the syenite gneiss and possibly truncates it, and the mineralization, near the southern boundary of the mineralized zone.The mineralized zone is coincident with a radiometric anomaly and discontinuous yttrium and zirconium soil anomalies.More drilling and metallurgical studies will be required to determine the economic viability of the yttrium and zirconium mineralization at Kipawa."

"The earliest gold-mining operations in Ontario included the Cordova, Deloro, and Sophia mines north of Lake Ontario (see for example, Miller and Knight, 1914). The Cordova deposit, worked intermittently between 1891 and 1940, is reported to have yielded 22 774 oz of gold from 127 670 tons of ore averaging 0.19 oz/ton Au (Gordon et al., 1979). The property remained inactive for many years. In 1988, Gunnar Gold Inc. and Mill City Gold Inc. conducted a drilling program along the main Cordova vein. The present study is based on core from three drill holes through the Cordova gabbro (Fig. 1) and the carbonate alteration zones enveloping the quartz-carbonate veins. The relatively narrow width of the alteration zone and the availability of continuous sections of core provided an opportunity to conduct a compact mineralogical-chemical study of carbonate alteration and its effect on the redistribution of rare earth elements (REEs). Although the Cordova deposit is not of great economic importance, this study has revealed a number of interesting features which are interpreted as resulting from processes that may be applicable to gold-bearing quartz vein deposits elsewhere.The Cordova gabbro is layered in places, varying from fine-to coarse-grained and in color from light gray (feldspathic) to dark gray-green (amphibolitic). However, layering within the section of the gabbro considered here and which hosts the Cordova gold deposit is mainly textural rather than compositional. Samples of unaltered gabbro selected for analyses were medium- to coarse-grained; amphibolitic and anorthositic phases were avoided as being less representative of the general chemical composition of the gabbro.The Cordova intrusion has undergone regional metamorphism and consists dominantly of actinolite and saussuritized plagioclase with smaller amounts of granular clinozoisite and flaky chlorite; minor quartz, ilmenite, titanite, apatite, and calcite are typically present. Some actinolite grains have irregular rims of pleochroic green hornblende that is optically continuous with the actinolite. Both chlorite and clinozoisite occur in two modes. Chlorite occurs as an alteration product of actinolite and as separate grains in the groundmass. Clinozoisite and albite occur together as regional metamorphic alteration products of original plagioclase crystals and as discrete grains in the matrix.The main gold-bearing quartz-carbonate occurrence occupies an easterly trending, steeply southward-dipping carbonatized shear zone up to 15 m wide and 700 m long. The gold occurs principally in irregular lenses and veins of quartz-carbonate up to a foot thick occupying the lower part of the schistose shear zone within the gabbro. This zone consists of chlorite, biotite, and carbonate and is flanked on both sides by chlorite-carbonate schist lacking biotite. The chlorite-carbonate schist in turn grades into regionally metamorphosed actinolite-bearing undeformed gabbro.The dominant sulfide within the quartz-carbonate lenses and in the surrounding schist is pyrite which occurs mainly as small cubes (1 mm to 2 mm) generally making up less than 10% of the rock. Rare blebs of chalcopyrite are present. Magnetite is common throughout the schist."
