"Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates. "The detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of coal exploration and mining. Tests for weathering which are suitable for the exploration camp should be fast, simple, and require minimal equipment and operator expertise. In this study, two tests which fulfill these requirements were evaluated using samples of Western Canadian coals. These tests, one based on the pH of a coal slurry and the other on the flotation of coal in a water/diesel oil mixture, do not appear to give consistent results and are not recommended as ideal weathering parameters.IntroductionThe weathering of coal results in a deterioration of those properties which render it suitable for use in industrial processes. Consequently, the detection and quantification of the degree of weathering is an important aspect of exploration and mining. Frequently, decisions related to the depth of the weathered zone must be made at the exploration camp and, therefore, tests for weathering which are fast, and require relatively inexpensive and portable equipment and minimal operator experience, would be very useful. The aim of the study reported here was to evaluate two tests used by U. S. Steel Corp. to detect coal weathering and which satisfy the requirements for use in an exploration camp. "INTRODUCTIONOperations research (OR) applications have experienced a substantial growth within the mining industry during the last three decades. The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of the results of a comprehensive survey of the application of various OR techniques to the major mining activities. It is hoped. through this sur vey , that the most widely used OR approaches, the important areas of application, and future trends have been identified.This survey included more than 500 articles published in this field in English since the late 1950s. Most of the relevant literature was found in mining publications, but, in terms of quality and originality, important applications were also found in literature not related to the mining industry. The sources constituted periodicals, proceedings research reports, and a few books. A listing of selected publications from which three or more articles reviewed in this survey appear is given at the end. Operations Research MethodologiesOperations research is concerned with optimal decision making in, and modeling of, deterministic and probabilistic systems that originate in real-life situation s. One basic feature of the OR methodologies is the attempt to optimize certain design parameters, subject to a set of constraints. This distinction has been employed in the survey as a guideline for selection of the techniques covered under the title "" OR methodologies"". The methodologies thus encountered in the literature are listed below. In a few cases, simulation has not been considered because it is not an optimization method per se."

The present study develops the numerical manifold method (NMM) as a tool to investigate the progressive failure in rock slopes. The entire processes of the progressive slide surface development related to crack initiation, propagation, coalescence and degradation to eventual catastrophic failure are successfully captured. To overcome the limitation of the original NMM associated with an improper removal of the interface cohesion of the discontinuities, the displacement-dependent cohesion removal method is adopted. Simple examples of failure of rock slopes containing different arrangements of discontinuities are modeled and their results are compared with those based on the popular limit equilibrium method proposed by famous pioneers Jennings and Jaeger. In cases of coplanar non-persistent discontinuities, close results are obtained despite the differences in the consideration of the stress concentrations at the crack/discontinuity tips. In cases of non-coplanar discontinuities, since the influence of the tensile strength is considered by both the Jaegers model and the NMM, the Factor of Safety (SF) values are similar despite the difference in the failure path trajectories predicted by these two models. The results also reveal that the original NMM without the displacement-dependent cohesion removal method is always more conservative due to the improper removal of the interface cohesion. The displacementdependent cohesion method can to some extent alleviate such a limitation.

"The various elements of longwall mine design are reviewed, particularly as they apply to condition s in the coalfields of the Plains region of Alberta. The following recommendations are made: (1) optimum panel lengths of 1000 to 2000 metres; (2) face lengths of 100 to 150 metres; (3) the use of retreat methods; (4) the restriction of floor undulations to less than 15 degrees. IntroductionThis article considers the elements of longwall mine design and is part of a short study that has been made of the feasibility of longwall mining in the Plains region, Alberta, Canada. The Plains region, with about 20 million tonnes, accounts for more than 80% of the coal resources of Alberta. The coalbearing strata in the Plains region cover an area of about 95,000 square miles. The geological formations dip very gently toward the southwest and, from a mining point of view, may be considered horizontal. The depth of the coal seams varies from several metres to over 650 metres. However, it is not anticipated that underground mining will be extended beyond the depth range of 25 to 250 metre s.The coal seams in the Plains region have been subject to many small mining operations in the past. The majority of these small mines were limited to a depth of about 50 metres, working mainly by room-and-pillar methods, although hand-filled longwall mining was often used.The development of new underground mining operations in the Plains region will have to be on a 'start-from-scratch' basis, especially regarding the installation of equipment. Longwall mining is more mechanized than any other method of mining and requires careful attention for the selection of new and expensive equipment. There have been many proven longwall advance and retreat systems in Europe and North America; mining conditions in the Plains region are more similar to those in the United States. Therefore, it will be essential for new mining pro jects in the Plains region to commence with proven system s and equipment; in time, perhaps an experimentation process could be attempted as experience is gained.Generally, the coal face is the key factor in mine productivity, which depends a great deal on equipment reliability, training and experience of the operators. The original design of coal faces must be flexible enough to cater for potential improvements so that running time can be increased."

"The Drumbo Mine is a new gypsum mine located at exit No. 32 of Highway 401 between Woodstock and Kitchener, Ontario. The flat-lying 6-foot (1.8-metre) bed of gypsum is near the base of the Silurian Salina Formation, about 380 feet (116 metres) below surface. The mine is owned and operated by Westroc Industries Limited. A shaft, 12.5 feet (3.81 metres) in diameter, was drilled and then lined with a liner-sinking technique new to this continent. The shaft was completed in the fall of 1977. Gypsum production was started in December 1978, employing a conventional room - and - pillar method of mining.Historical BackgroundA brief mention of gypsum in the Drumbo area is included in a survey of the Ontario gypsum industry by Guillet. This occurrence was discovered in 1958 when National Gypsum conducted some widespread diamond drilling. Western Gypsum Products Limited acquired leases in 1960 and concentrated a drilling program in Blenheim Township near the village of Drumbo; 79 holes were drilled in an area of 1900 acres (770 hectares). Mining rights were then acquired for 170 0acres (690 hectares). A test shaft, 44 inches (1.1 metres) in diameter, was drilled to obtain a 50-ton (45-tonne) bulk sample. This opening will be used as an emergency escape way and for ventilation.Westroc Industries Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPB Industries, has its head office at Mississauga, Ontario and operates gypsum board plants at Mississauga, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Montreal. Other gypsum mines are at Windermere, B.C. and Amaranth, Manitoba."

"The mechanical behaviour of rock materials is largely influenced by the stress state and pore pressure; this needs to be considered in many applications, such as petroleum engineering, tunnelling or stability of underground excavations.Conventional triaxial tests (d2 = d 3) are generally used to assess the influence of confining and pore pressure. In this work, those tests are performed on a porous rock named Sorcy limestone, along with more advanced stress paths like triaxial extension (d 2 = d 1) and purely deviatoric tests with independent pore pressure control. Those tests are combined to a true triaxial study on the dry rock in order to investigate the effect of true triaxial stresses and, hence, build three-dimensional limiting envelopes accounting for the influence of pore pressure.Three-dimensional limiting envelopes of dry Sorcy limestone are built in meridian and octahedral planes. The shape of the octahedral sections changes with the mean stress from triangular to hexagonal and then quasi circular. At even higher mean stresses, the evolution continues towards a triangle with apexes oriented in the direction of triaxial extension stress states. In meridian sections, the deviatoric stress first increases with the mean stress. The transition between this deviatoric mechanism and the cap surface occurs at different mean pressures depending on the Lode angle.Terzaghi’s effective stress is found to govern the yield and plastic behaviour of saturated Sorcy limestone. Triaxial tests show that the limiting envelope does not depend on the loading path (conventional compression and purely deviatoric stress paths). In triaxial extension, the brittle-ductile transition is observed for a higher mean pressure than in triaxial compression, as previously found for true triaxial tests on the dry rock.Finally, it is shown that upon appropriate normalisation, the dry and saturated yield envelopes come very close one to each other. This suggests that only the size of the yield envelope changes between dry and saturated state (pore pressure = 5 MPa); its shape does not seem to evolve."

There are, however, other events and conditions that must be described to complete the story and this paper attempts to do that as well IntroductionUnited Keno Hill Mines Limited, a subsidiary of Falconbridge Limited, is the only silver producer in the Yukon. Operations are located in north central Yukon, in and around the small town of Elsa, latitude 62.5 °, about 275 road miles from Whitehorse. The Arctic Circle is about 185 miles due north of the town.Temperatures in 1986 ranged from a high of 28.5°C in July to a low of -37.0°C in November, however, much lower temperatures have been recorded in previous years. Due to the mountainous terrain the town of Elsa is completely in the shade from mid-November until early February, a period of about 12 weeks.The Elsa area, as is most of the north, is considered semiarid with an average precipitation level of about 15 inches. Vegetation, however, is quite abundant though slightly dwarfed at the townsite elevation of 3200 feet above sea level: Many of our operating and exploration portals as well as our open pits are above the tree line. Permafrost in the area has been recorded up to 400 feet below the surface."

"The recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide. Techniques similar to those used in the mineral processing industry are used to produce high quality recycled fibers for use in newsprint. The mineral processing group at McGill University in conjunction with the Pulp and Paper industry (Mechanical and Chemi-mechanical Wood Pulp Network) has adapted one of these techniques, column flotation, for the purpose of deinking wastepaper. This article describes the typical process of recycling wastepaper from a mineral processing point of view. It also presents results from McGill University's flotation column test work at a Quebec wastepaper recycling facility.IntroductionThe recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide, including Canada which is now the world's largest importer of wastepaper (CPPA, 1996). Much of the current drive to increase the utilization rate of recovered paper is a reaction to the solid-waste disposal problem that faces many Canadian and U.S. municipalities. The real problem in the disposal of solid waste is not the absolute amount of garbage that must be disposed of each year but this amount in relation to available disposal capacity.Environmental restrictions on the creation of new landfill sites and incinerators (the two main options for disposal of municipal solid waste) have tightened the demand/supply balance in the solid waste disposal market. This shrinking availability of waste disposal sites in the face of increasing population with greater disposal requirements defines the Developed World's solid waste crisis. Not only are there fewer disposal sites available, but the costs of using them is skyrocketing. These factors have increased government regulations mandating recycled paper content in newsprint. Conservation and environmental issues make the current drive for wastepaper recycling a real issue and business opportunity.A key to the success of producing quality recycled fibers from wastepaper is the deinking technology. The production of tissue papers, paper towels and newsprint requires regenerated fibers which are substantially free of ink particles. Of the various options available, mineral processing techniques can offer the most economical, environmentally acceptable and versatile strategies (Yoon, 1993). Today, it is recognized that flotation is one of the most effective processes for removing ink particles in the production of a high quality product. In a collaborative program with the Pulp and Paper industry, the mineral processing group at McGill University has adapted column flotation technology for this purpose. This article will describe the typical process of deinking from a mineral processing point of view (Part A). It will also present some results from McGill University's flotation column test work at a nearby paper recycling facility (Part 8)."

The Intec Gold Process has been developed as a halide-based alternative for the recovery of gold from refractory sulphide deposits. The halide medium allows sulphide oxidation and gold extraction to be performed concurrently at moderate temperature and atmospheric pressure sourcing oxygen from direct air injection. The dissolved gold is loaded onto activated carbon and stripped in a conventional Zadra circuit. High gold extractions have been achieved from a range of refractory gold concentrates at laboratory scale, which has led to a continuous locked-cycle pilot plant program. The pilot plant operated at >99% availability, with a maximum of 96.5% gold extraction from a concentrate containing 58.6 g/t gold. >99% of the dissolved gold was loaded onto carbon at up to 1% w/w, with no loss of carbon activity detected over five loading/washing/elution cycles. This paper describes the process and presents both laboratory and pilot plant results as well as economic data from two costing studies.

"Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. We know of no previously reported attempts to repair a fractured drumshaft; any feasible method would involve welding and the associated problems of distortion, crack formation and strength.In June 1984, a fracture was discovered in the drumshaft of the production hoist in the Teck Corporation, Lamaque Division Mine at Val d'Or, Quebec. Delivery time on a new shaft would have been at least six months. The shaft was repaired in ten days and the total out -of-service time was four weeks.This paper describes why the shaft failed, how it was repaired, and the special alignment procedures employed during re-installation to minimize stresses in the repaired area.IntroductionThe performance of a mine hoist drumshaft is absolutely critical to mine operation. An inoperable drumshaft means no hoist, which in turn means no production or mine operation.Fractures in mine hoist drumshafts are rare. Previously when they have occurred, no one has seriously considered attempting a repair because of problems involved. The causes of the failure were determined and the calculated stress levels confirmed by strain gauge measurement during operation.The success of this project was achieved by adhering rigorously to fundamental management and engineering principles."

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. "Hydraulic mining consists of coal erosion by powerful jet s of water from hydraulic monitors operated by remote control. The broken coal is crushed and mixed with water and then transported from the face to the surface using gravity whenever possible. This is a simple, safe and productive method. It will easily satisfy North American productivity standards if the structural features and coal properties are favourable for water jet cutting technology (Kaiser Resources Ltd. , hydraulic mine). General ConsiderationIn open-pit mines, placer mining (Fig. I) and hydroelectric construction projects, hydraulic earth moving techniques have been successfully applied. The stripping and transporting of the overburden has been accomplished by means of large monitor jets augmented by slurry pumps and pipes. An extension of this technique has led to the underground extraction of coal and ores. To date, the method has been most successfully used in undergrond coal mining, because the coal can be easily cut and flushed away by water jets, and the rocks of the roof strata can be left behind. Due to this favourable situation, the hydraulic mining definition only relates to the underground coal mines.At present, there are four basic types of hydraulic mining, which can be defined according to the coal breaking technique used in each case. The methods are briefly discussed below:(1) Coal excavation may be carried out by conventional techniques, but the mine is designed and equipped for the hydraulic transport of the mineral from the working place to surface. Under these circumstances, the coal breaking may not be influenced by the water jet, however it may be indirectly involved. For example, pre-loosening of the coal may be done by water infusion-hydraulic fracturing. Water may also be used to flush the broken coal, which has been excavated either by drilling and blasting or by mechanical cutting, into the transport flumes. In other cases, a mechanical loader may load the coal directly into the hydraulic transport system, without using any water for the extraction process. This hydraulic mining concept is primarily used for hard and impermeable coal, such as anthracite."

"Titanium dioxide pigment plants using the so-called “chloride process” produce considerable amounts of chloride waste, which contains predominantly iron chloride. In most cases, this waste is dissolved in a weak hydrochloric acid solution and then neutralised. The metal content of the waste is dumped as hydroxide sludge, while its chloride content is lost in an effluent.Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium has developed a new proprietary process whereby pure metallic iron and chlorine gas are recovered from chloride waste by electrolysis. This process uses a two compartment cell separated by an anion exchange membrane to prevent iron cycling between its trivalent and divalent valence. The cathode is made of titanium Grade 7, while the anode is a dimensionally stable one of the type “metal–mixed metal oxide” (MMO) for the evolution of chlorine gas. The catholyte is concentrated and pH-adjusted iron-rich chloride solution originating from chloride waste. The anolyte is recirculating solution containing alkali or alkali earth chlorides such as MgCl2, NaCl, etc. Current efficiencies above 90% can be achieved at temperatures about 80°C using catholyte solutions almost saturated in iron chloride and other chlorides.In this paper, we discuss the details of this process, and how this could be integrated within a chloride pigment plant for the treatment of chloride wastes."

"High voltage electric pulse comminution (SELFRAG) relies on inducing electrical breakdown that occurs when the resistivity of a dielectric is insufficient to completely block all transfer of electricity while the conductivity is not high enough to fully accommodate the flow of electricity without considerable changes to the crystal lattice. The technology is based on introducing the electrical discharges into solids immersed in water and placed between two electrodes. The technology has received significant attention since investigations have revealed the potential for fully fragmenting particles or pre-weakening rocks in order to reduce the energy consumption in comminution practices, improve liberation and potentially increase the recovery in mineral processing. Mineralogical analysis of samples showed possible liberation at coarser sizes by high voltage breakage in comparison with conventional mechanical comminution.This study explored the potential of implementing SELFRAG to treat the Sandvik’s Mittersill mine tungsten ore (scheelite) for recovery improvement. Accordingly, standard SELFRAG tests were conducted on four samples from the tungsten process plant to evaluate the energy-breakage relation and potential to liberate the value minerals at coarser size fraction for recovery improvement. The size reduction of the ore after processing with SELFRAG revealed that size deportment occurs at 0.4, 0.2, and 0.1 mm, which indicated potential liberation of gangue and target minerals at respective sizes. In comparison with conventional milling, the difference is the deportment of values into 0.4 mm sizes, which was, to some extent, confirmed by SEM liberation analysis. However, more tests are needed to proof the concept. The study has indicated that, despite consuming more energy in comparison with conventional mechanical comminution, there are promising prospects in liberating the values at coarser fraction and improve recovery by making use of SELFRAG. The energy consumption can be reduced through customized generator and equipment setup, which must be further investigated."

This team can be formed from within the staff of large mining companies or contracted from major engineering firms and consultants. The mandate of the project managers usually terminates on successful startup of the operation. For frontier mineral developments in the Canadian Arctic or in the developing countries, startup and the initial year of operation represents the period in which the project is most vulnerable to technical, political and managerial problems. A complete change of the management team or the retention of the construction project managers and the resulting cost combined with the breakdown of organizational accountability within the operating staff .are unnecessary management problems.Independent project management services provide the commitment necessary to sustain the continuity of management through all project phases. Efficiency and the ability to make decisions quickly are characteristics of the many successful small mining companies. These qualities are necessary in the project management group, which will be responsible for up to 90% of the preproduction costs.Continuous project management in the construction and operational phases of a mineral development are common in the iron ore industry, but remain anomalous in the base metal, energy mineral and industrial mineral fields.The Nanisivik project on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic is used to illustrate the advantages of total project management through construction and operation.Total project management has further potential for foreign interests and financial and utility organizations desirous of participating in the Canadian mining industry, but with no direct involvement in the construction or operating management. Participation agreements in the operating phase of a project can be negotiated to have management fees related to both the production and the profits of the enterprise."

"In the processing of UG2 platinum ore, stirred milling technologies are dominating regrind applications that require grinding the particles to P80s’ in the region of 45 µm. For this application stirred mills are 30–40% more energy efficient and require a smaller foot print compared to traditional tumbling mills. In this work a study was carried out using a batch pin mill and three scales of Stirred Media Detritors. A laboratory scale pin mill, a pilot scale Stirred Media Detritor with an installed power of 18.5 KW and two industrial scale Stirred Media Detritors in continuous operation, with an installed power of 355 KW and 1,100 KW were used. The industrial scale SMDs were in the secondary grinding section of a mill floatmill float (MF2) UG2 processing plants. The tests were focused on assessing the effect of feed rate and percent solids on power consumption and product fineness at lab scale, floatation response of the SMD product at pilot scale and on an industrial scale, the effect of feed rate on energy consumption and product fineness. The measurements obtained were feed flow rates, mill power and from the samples cut, particle size distribution of both feed and product. Specific energy was observed to increase with increasing percent solids over the 30wt% to 80wt% studied. Floatation response tests of the pilot scale SMD products show improvement in grade. Specific energy and reduction rations are observed to decrease with an increase in feed rate.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of comminution in most mineral processing applications is to liberate the valuable minerals from gangue so that they can be recovered in subsequent separation stages. Most precious and base metal plants treat low grade fine-grained ores which require a higher degree of size reduction to yield the necessary degree of liberation (Partyka & Yan, 2007). Many authors have shown that the relationship between product size and grinding energy consumption is exponential, the finer the product from the comminution device, the higher the energy consumption (Gao & Weller 1993; Napier-Munn, Morell, Morrison & Kojovic, 1996; Jankovic, Valery & La Rosa, 2003). The suggested reason for this kind of relationship is that smaller particles have fewer flaws and higher strength than larger particles. Particles with fewer flaws and higher strength require higher energy for breakage to occur. One of the challenges most plants face is that of efficient energy utilisation in the liberation of the mineral from these complex ores. Conventional tumbling mills are not energy efficient in fine and ultra-fine grinding applications because some of the energy is spent on moving the charge and does not go directly into breakage. Stirred mills have been found to be about 30% to 40% more efficient and require a smaller foot print compared to traditional tumbling mills for regrind applications that require product size with P80s’ in the sub 45 µm regions (Radziszewski & Allen, 2013). Stirred mills are able to produce fine product because they can achieve a high number of stress events per unit time and volume compared to tumbling mills (Kwade, 1999a). To minimise energy usage without compromising product quality, the mining industry has adopted stirred milling technologies for fine and ultra-fine grinding (Radziszewski & Allen 2014; Kwade, 1999b). The south Africa platinum group metal (PGM) industry alone had over 40 stirred media mills installed by 2011 (Rule, 2011). Of that 40, 13 were in the ultra-fine grinding (UFG) application and the rest in main stream inert grinding (MIG)."

"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures.
