Manganese ions in zinc electrowinning electrolytes form a protective MnO2 layer that ultimately decreases Pb contamination in the zinc product. In this study, the effect of dissolved Mn2+ on the electrochemical performance of Pb, Pb-Ca and composite Pb-MnO2 anodes was investigated. The properties of the MnO2 layer formed on these anodes were studied and compared. Potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry experiments were performed in 180 g L-1 sulphuric acid to study the electrochemical reactions occurring on the anodes. The anodes were subjected to galvanostatic polarization at 50 mA cm-2. The morphology and uniformity of the MnO2 layer on the anodes were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Experimental results revealed that the MnO2 layer formed on the composite anode was more compact and uniform compared to that formed on the Pb and Pb-Ca anode. It was also observed that the cell mud formation rate, and consequently manganese ions consumption, depended on the anode type. Although initial formation of the MnO2 layer decreased the oxygen evolution overpotential, its growth might negatively affect electrocatalytic activity of the anodes.

It is well known that in situ stress measurements at a given site will generally display significant variability. However, it appears that a robust analysis of such measurements – i.e., one that is faithful to the tensorial nature of the data – is not available. Despite the fact that stress is a tensor, stress magnitude and orientation have long been analyzed separately using classical statistics. In earlier work we demonstrated the applicability of tensor statistics to the analysis of stress variability. Here, we investigate further the difference between tensor and classical statistics with respect to the stress tensor correlation matrix. Our analysis commences with the selection of a series of valid correlation matrices. Then, assuming that standardized tensor components follow the multivariate standard normal distribution, these correlation matrices are used to generate marginal probability distributions of the eigen-parameters (i.e., principal stress magnitude and rotation angle). From these, random stress tensors are generated, their eigenparameters determined, and the probability density distributions of these obtained using both classical and tensor statistics. Our results indicate that, for all correlation matrices, both methods give practically identical distributions for principal stress magnitude. However, the discrepancy between the two methods with regard to probability density distribution of rotation angle is highly dependent on stress component correlation. This discrepancy is usefully quantified in terms of the integral, with respect to orientation, of the difference between the two probability density distributions. This parameter, which we term Area Difference, is closely linked to the magnitude of the correlation matrix determinant, which itself is related to the normal stress correlation coefficient (i.e., ?x ,?y ??). Assuming that Area Difference should not exceed 0.1, we identify the critical determinant for any particular value of normal stress component correlation coefficient. Thus, using published in situ stress data and the obtained critical determinants, we show that for a specific normal stress component coefficient, when the correlation matrix determinant is less than its critical determinant, the more precise tensor statistics should be used to calculate the distribution of rotation angle. These results demonstrate that the customary analysis of stress measurement data may lead to erroneous results, and that tensor statistics appears to be preferred approach.

The mining industry routinely processes material with different particle sizes. Coal, nickel ore, copper ore, lignite, shale, and phosphate ore are all examples of materials with wide particle size distributions. It is often assumed that these materials are homogenous and that any particle size distribution has the same chemical activity and composition. It is entirely possible, and quite likely, that chemical composition is a function of particle size distribution. In addition, particle size distributions in ore materials are often responsible for the difference in flow behavior in process equipment. This is evident in coal electrical production facilities. Fine coal may have the same ash content, sulfur content, and BTU value as coarse coal. However, all electrical production facilities know the extreme flow problems that result when attempting to handle wet fine coal. Segregation of these bulk materials is an important issue that must be understood to prevent these cohesive flow problems. Additionally, fertilizers are mixtures of particles with different shape and sizes. These mixtures must remain homogenous to optimize fertilizer performance. Segregation leads to poor product quality. This paper presents a method of measuring the magnitude of sifting segregation occurring in bulk material and the relationship between the strength of the bulk material and the separation tendency. It shows an inverse relationship between the yield strength of the material and the bulk segregation.

"INTRODUCTIONChina is providing more than 90% of the rare earth products consumed in the whole world. Acidic extractants are commonly used in the extraction separation of rare earths. Saponification of the acidic extractants by basic substances is usually necessary for the purpose of increasing and stabilizing their extraction capacity, and meanwhile inorganic acids are required for both scrubbing and stripping. Thus acids and bases are the main consumed chemicals, and the resulting salts are the main pollutants generated by rare earth separation processes. Currently, due to increasing environmental concerns in China, rare earth solvent extraction separation techniques are being developed to reduce both consumption and emission of chemicals, which is driving the developments on both theories and processes for solvent extraction separations.In the 1970s Prof. Xu et al. developed the Theory of Countercurrent Extraction (Xu, Li, & Yian, 1985). In recent years, the development of novel processes for rare earth separation has moved beyond the earlier theory. One rare earth separation process, the so-called hyperlink process, has been developed in the past decade and proven in industrial practice to dramatically reduce both the consumption and emission of chemicals during multi-component solvent extraction separations, and therefore is now widely used in the Chinese rare earth separation industry (Liao, Wu, Cheng, Wang, Liu, Zhang, & Yan, 2013). The present article will give a brief review of the development of the theory of the hyperlink processes, and the hyperlink separation flowsheets for typical rare earth mines in China designed using the theory.HYPERLINK PROCESSES (LIAO et al., 2013)A flowsheet of multiple-component separation consists of a couple of separation units. The units of a conventional flowsheet separately consume chemicals for saponification and scrubbing and discharge wastewater with resulting salts. In contrast, the separation units in a hyperlink process are hyperlinked and thereby the chemical demands of the whole flowsheet are decreased. For a feed containing t components of A1, A2, …, and At, it has been proved in theory that the separation mode of (AtAt-1…A2)/(At-1At-2…A1) is preferred in a single separation unit. The hyperlinking between separation units can have two forms. The link between two units locating at a same separation level, such as between (A4A3)/(A3A2) and (A3A2)/(A2A1), is known as horizontal hyperlinking. The link between two units located on different levels, such as between (A4A3A2)/(A3A2A1) and (A3A2)/(A2A1), is known as vertical hyperlinking. Both the hyperlinking forms have been proven to save chemical usage and consequently to lower the pollution emissions in industrial practices as well as in theory."

"Abstract - The Minas de Oro Cu-Au skarn and replacement deposits are located in the highlands of central Honduras, 90 km north-northwest of the capital of Tegucigalpa.The deposits formed in Cretaceous volcano-sedimentary rocks following the emplacement of an early Paleocene granodiorite to dacite intrusive complex. Three types of skarn (Type IA, IB, and IC) and a low-temperature replacement mineralization (Type II) are recognized. Type IA skarn consists of massive brown-green andradite and lesser magnetite and pyroxene. Type IB skarn has magnetite + hematite as the main constituent and garnet <50%. Type IC skarn comprises >50% pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite with interstitial garnet or pyroxene. Au and Cu occur in potentially economic concentrations in all skarn types while other metals such as Ag, Pb, Zn, and Mo are locally present in significant quantities. The highly variable distribution and nature of the skarn deposits is controlled by: (1) intrusive activity, (2) composition of host rocks, (3) faulting and fracturing, and (4) attitude of host carbonates.Type II Au-Cu-As mineralization occurs in calcareous sandstone and conglomerate 2 km distal from skarns and comprises clots of Cu sulfides hosted within a zone of brecciation and quartz flooding. Garnet and/or magnetite skarn is not present and the mineralizing event appears to have been a low-temperature replacement type.The similarity of coeval Au-Cu-Fe skarns in central Guerrero, southern Mexico to Minas de Oro skarns, and the similar local stratigraphy is consistent with the generally accepted theory that the Chortis block originated from southern Mexico and during the Tertiary moved southeast to its present position."

Arsenic (As) is a toxic element and is a major contaminant in the extraction processes of some metals (e.g. gold and copper). Due to the toxicity of arsenic species, its removal from As-containing streams from extractive metallurgy processes and safe disposal is absolutely necessary. For nearly complete removal of waste arsenic species from metallurgical process streams, it is required to have arsenic in its pentavalent state (As5+ species). This study presents an oxidation process for arsenic species with air or oxygen gas as oxidant. Activated carbon (AC) or other carbon based materials are used to catalyse the oxidation reaction. Air or oxygen gas is the only consumed reagent which makes the economy of the process very attractive. The oxidation reaction can be carried out at ambient conditions (room temperature and atmospheric pressure) in less than 24 hours.

Within flotation technology the general trend is towards very large cells. Scale-up is usually done by postulating geometrical similarity, which implies keeping the aspect ratio constant when increasing cell volume. Consequently, the design of flotation circuits typically involves several cells of identical geometry within a bank. Using a few standard sizes in a flotation plant simplifies design, manufacturing and maintenance of the cells, but does not necessarily guarantee optimal performance and selectivity of the flotation process. Geometry parameters for a given cell volume that influence flotation cell performance include cell height, which causes changes in the hydrostatic pressure and suspension hydrodynamics, and also influences the travel distance of particle-bubble agglomerates as well as the homogeneity of the mixing. Also the thickness of the froth layer depends on the aspect ratio of the cell. The objective of this work is to gain a better understanding of material distribution and properties within a flotation cell and, based on this information, elucidate how alterations of the cell geometry can influence separation efficiency. For this purpose systematic measurements and analyses of the spatial distribution of the different phases within a 160 m3 flotation cell have been carried out with a particular focus on an industrial, low-grade copper ore beneficiation process. The concepts for sampling at different vertical and lateral positions of the flotation cell are introduced. The results from the experimental work give an understanding of internal material distribution within flotation cells. Based on the measured phase distribution and concentrations as well as particle properties at various positions within the cell, the implications for an optimized scaling and design of individual flotation cells within a flotation circuit are discussed.

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. "This paper presents basic chemistry and operating conditions for the hydrolysis of ferric chloride into solid hematite and gaseous hydrogen chloride, and shows how this unit operation can be applied in chloride hydrometallurgy to regenerate strong hydrochloric acid and reject iron without also rejecting valuable metals such as nickel, copper and cobalt. Two examples are used to illustrate the hydrolysis technology and compare it to existing technology. The first is the regeneration of spent steel pickling acid, comparing hydrolysis to conventional pyrohydrolysis. The second example is the processing of a hypothetical low grade nickel laterite, comparing the novel chloride hydrolysis route to conventional sulphate HPAL technology.INTRODUCTION Whilst, in many respects, the control and removal of dissolved iron from chloride leach solutions can resemble the manner in which it is done in sulphate systems, chloride chemistry additionally offers the ability to achieve the same objectives in different ways (Harris, 2014). Conventionally, iron is oxidised to its ferric state (if necessary) and then precipitated with a base, usually magnesia where the feed is a laterite and lime where it is a sulphide, since calcium will precipitate sulphate formed during leaching. One method for controlling iron is to form FeOOH, either ß-FeOOH (akaganéite), a-FeOOH (goethite), or a mixture thereof (Fillipou and Choi, 2002). However, if akaganéite is formed, the precipitate will contain a significant chloride component (as high as 7% Cl), leading to chloride losses and difficulty in satisfactorily disposing of the residue. Washing chloride from akaganéite is almost impossible due to the propensity of the solids to undergo peptization. The conventional approach requires the addition of a base, but it is based to some extent on controlled supersaturation precipitation (Demopoulos, 2009), which produces a more uniform and crystalline material and is far more attractive than, for example, the turboaeration process proposed by Great Central Mines in their chloride copper process (Raudsepp & Beattie, 1986)."

The paper suggests a number of factors that might be taken into account in negotiating royalty terms.IntroductionRoyal ties are a part of mining life in Canada. They are used by many kinds of individuals in many kind s of situations. Prospectors commonly take royalty interests back when they transfer claims to development companies. Mining companies disposing of undeveloped (or sometimes even developed) properties are often paid at least in part by royalties. Royalties are even used by institutional investors with no other connection with the resource industry.Such different royalty holders have different investment goals, different cash flow requirements, and different risk / return preferences. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty type s. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator&apos;s NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator&apos;s bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk/ return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. "The potential use of industrial and municipal waste glass as a partial pozzolanic replacement for Normal Portland cement in mine backfill has been investigated. Considerable quantities of glass are currently discarded into landfill sites at high cost to municipal and industrial users with no foreseeable environmental benefits being gained by such disposal. This research study was undertaken to assess the viability of using ground waste glass materials as partial binder replacement of Portland cement fractionswithin consolidated mine backfill materials. The program was implemented to review various factors that could influence successful incorporation of glass waste replacement of cement, these factors being the feasibility of glass waste procurement, determination of process economics and the physical and chemical suitability of ground waste glass materials to generate adequate backfill strength when replacing Normal Portland cement fractions. A series of laboratory assessment trials were established to evaluate backfill component characteristics and mixture strength properties for both standard Portland cement-consolidated and blended Portland cement/ground waste glass-consolidated backfill materials. Side-by-side review of the strength behaviour of various component backfill/cement mixtures was designed to permit comparative evaluation of the capabilities of ground waste glass and Portland cement products as backfill consolidating agents"

The changes to The Mining Tax Act proposed in the budget are mean t 10 simplify the current system without any loss of revenue to the government. It goes without saying that some operators will benefit from the changes while others will pay more taxes after 1985.With regard to ongoing matters at the federal level, the proposed carve-out legislation and the issue of northern allowances are being discussed with government officials, and a small victory has recently been scored with regard 10 the laxation of certain share transactions of prospectors and grubstakers. A report on these issues is provided herein.Ontario BudgetOn October 24, 1985, Ontario Finance Minister Robert F. Nixon tabled a budget proposing several significant changes to both the Ontario Mining Tax Act and the province’s income tax legislation.Mining Tax ActA flat rate of tax and reduced processing allowances highlight proposed changes to The Mining Tax Act. The proposed changes, with a comparison to the existing system, are set out in Table I.The most significant change is the replacement of the graduated tax rate schedule with a flat 20010 tax rate. This is a welcome change for most mine operators who viewed the high rate of 30% on profit over $20 million as counter-productive.However, the flat rate of ta x may not be welcome to all operators. Generally speaking, operators with less than $ 10 million annual profit are better off under the graduated rate system, while operators with annual profit exceeding $10 million will benefit from the 20010 tax rate."

"Rare earth elements have obtained significant attention during the last few years due to predicted increase in their demand. Several projects worldwide are at pre-feasibility or feasibility stage aiming to commence production. Deposits of rare earth elements are typically complex and multi-metallic of nature. This means that production processes are often also complex and therefore, various metallurgical unit processes are needed. Outotec’s equipment and technology portfolio is very comprehensive and includes hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical apparatus and processes applicable to the efficient exploitation of rare earth deposits. Outotec has gained useful experience relevant to the processing of rare earths through several assignments including those for Alkane Resources Ltd. (Dubbo Zirconia Project), Greenland Minerals and Energy Ltd (Kvanefjeld Project), Frontier Rare Earths Limited (Zandkopsdrift project), Tantalus Rare Earths AG (Madagascar), Quest Rare Metals (Strange Lake project) and Orbite Aluminae Inc. (HPA project). The hydrometallurgical test work of two process flowsheets is presented in the paper. A roasting or acid baking step is common to several proposed rare earth projects. In the past, rotary kilns have been used, but Outotec has developed a new process concept to handle the rare earth material in fluid bed reactors. The basis for this development is long experience in fluid bed technology of Outotec in Germany. One advantage of fluid bed roasting is the higher throughput per unit. In combination with the roasting and baking, Outotec offers the gas cleaning and acid plant and provides a complete and closed concept.INTRODUCTIONRecovery of rare earth elements (REE) has obtained significant attention during recent years. It has been estimated that their demand will be boosted because of their need in many technology areas. REE can be utilized in magnets, batteries, displays, catalysts, optical devices etc. (Jordens, Cheng, & Waters, 2013; Zhang & Edwards, 2013). The production of REE is focused in China, which means that production outside of China is very scarce. However, there are multiple active development projects worldwide working towards production of REE containing products outside of China (Chen, 2011)."

"Tires, although not always the largest single cost item in open-pit mining operations, will place in the top three, along with explosives and fuel. How this high-cost supply is controlled is dependent upon on an efficient tire program. The success of this program is, in turn, dependent upon the people who are directly associated with tires and their use, namely: the mine&apos;s tire personnel, the tire sales representatives and a technician for the rubber company. The technician will relay his observations and information received from the mine personnel back to the manufacturer with recommendations to overcome current problems .Haulage truck tire life and costs in a hard rock open-pit mine are governed and controlled by four important factors:I) Field control.2) Operating within manufacturer&apos;s guidelines.3) Different tire purchasing methods.4) Scrap piles.Field ControlPerhaps the most influential people involved in this program are those who live with the tire through every hour of its lifespan: the truck driver, the shovel operator, the dozer operator, the grader operator and the shift boss. Of these, the truck driver has the most control, in that he can drive over or around rock s as these situations arise. The loading area, the edge of the haul road and the dump account for most of the tire injuries.This is why shovel, dozer and grader operators must appreciate their influence on haulage tire life. Spillage cleanup must be ongoing and is not being done adequately if any of these operators are idle. The shift boss that drives by a rock on the road without removing it or calling for a cleanup has little recourse with the truck driver who runs over it-he has sanctioned the driver&apos;s actions by his own neglect."

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. The slags generated in the copper conversion process are mainly composed of Cu2O-Fe2O3-SiO2 with the compounds CaO and Al2O3 in concentrations up to 10 wt%. The present work contributes to the knowledge of the conversion process, generating experimental data for the diagrams of phases Cu2O-Fe2O3- SiO2-Al2O3 and Cu2O-Fe2O3-SiO2-CaO. The experiments were carried out in a tubular furnace at temperatures of 1150°C and 1200°C under a condition of saturation with tridymite. Once the equilibrium was reached, the samples were fast quenched in water. The phases in the samples were observed in a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the elemental composition of the phases analyzed by means of Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detectors. The addition of Al2O3 and CaO into the Cu2O-Fe2O3- SiO2 system resulted in an appreciable displacement of the liquidus lines, corresponding to an expansion of the liquid in the tridymite primary phase field. INTRODUCTION The conversion process of copper consists of oxidizing Fe and S present in mattes with 60 to 65wt% Cu (up to 16wt% Fe). This process is separated into two stages: 1- Slag blowing: Fe is oxidized, the addition of a flux such as SiO2 (silica) forms a second liquid phase called slag, this phase is removed from the furnace; 2-Copper blowing: in this stage, the matte with low concentration of Fe (<1% w/w) is again oxidized to remove S as SO2 in the exhaust gases. The product of these two processes is the formation of Copper Blister (> 98wt% Cu) (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Unlike the aforementioned conventional processes, in most Chilean smelters, conversion Peirce- Smith Furnaces are loaded with high copper matte (70–75wt% Cu) (Henao & Moyano, 2016). Due to the low concentration of iron in these matte (up to 5wt%), it is considered that separating the conversion process in two stages is neither operational nor environmentally convenient. Therefore, the process is carried out in a single stage (Pradena et al., 2006), generating a slag phase with a high percentage of Cu2O (wt%Cu>40).

Ground movement is normal in open cut mining operations, mainly caused by excavation response and blasting. Movement of the ground can be acceptable provided it is not unexpected and catastrophic. However, in steep mine walls and the very large open pits being developed today the consequence of slope collapse can be catastrophic. Such risks can be minimized at the planning stage by reducing slope angles, but this carries a very high cost. Also, instabilities which develop whilst mining can lead to ore reserves being quarantined, which represent a high cost to the mining operation. In spite of such safety measures, unexpected failures have occurred in the past. These issues motivated the development and production of the slope stability radar (SSR). There are currently over 80 GroundProbe SSR systems deployed in metalliferous and coal mines in 17 countries. The unexpected failure of rock walls at mining sites is a major cause of death and serious injury. Slope failure is also one of the major causes of economic and production losses. An unexpected wall failure can bury critical equipment. It also disrupts the mine plan. It is common to cease mining for several days or weeks following a wall collapse due to uncertainty over stability. Direct economic losses in remediation alone can easily exceed $1,000,000 per incident. The economic costs of injury or fatality are much higher including closure of mines during the incident investigation process. Massive wall failure can result in direct and indirect costs measured in millions of dollars. This paper will present some recent case studies of the SSR operation in open cut mines in North America, including Thompson Creek Mining Company (Idaho), Smoky Canyon Mine (Idaho), and a general case study on extreme cold weather use of the SSR.
