Lime is the common reagent used for pH control in cyanide gold circuits. Lime can be supplied as either quicklime (CaO) or 'hydrated lime(Ca(OH)2). Both are dry powders with variable flow properties. These properties demand special attention when designing machin- ery to handle them.

About 11,000 tons of contaminated zinc flotation concentrate were available in the form of earth walls from dams used for atmospheric drying of the concentrate.Following successful laboratory tests this material was treated in a plant by crushing, grinding, and then flotation in a circuit consisting of roughing, scavenging, and two stages of cleaning. Reagents used were copper sulphate and a little butyl xanthate and frother. About 5,720 tons of zinc concentrate assaying 52· 3 per cent zinc were produced.

Direct seeding or regeneration of vegetation in Australia has been occurring in nature for about 400 million years! From the 1870's till the 1930's, direct seeding by man was used in the south-west of Victoria as a method of re-establishing native vegetation on broadacre farmland. The introduction of improved exotic pasture grasses and the wide-spread use of superphosphate from the 1930's lead to its demise as a farmland revegetation technique.

Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. The project management and construction plans adopted by Davy McKee for the Cooper Basin Liquids Project resulted in a project notable for the Relatively short duration from initiation of the design through to liquids production. Two locations were involved, one at Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia some 800 km from Adelaide, and the other at Port Bonython some 40 km from Whyalla. Total expenditure by the owners at the two sites was in excess of $600 million. Running a successful reagent plant trial is not an easy task, especially when trying to achieve an incremental improvement in a highly variable process, such as flotation. Cytec aims to achieve one per cent recovery improvement with 90 per cent statistical confidence. Most concentrators experience large fluctuations in recovery and so the æmagicalÆ one per cent is difficult to detect. With the aid of statistical software, including REFDISTR (proprietary) and ECHIPR, Cytec have developed a unique approach to differentiate between daily operational variation and actual process improvement. This paper describes how Cytec runs a plant trial based on extensive laboratory investigation and detailed analysis of historical plant data using statistical techniques.

The Wark has been conducting collaborative research through the AMIRA International P260 series of projects for over 20 years. This paper reviews specific outcomes of successful technology transfer to flotation plant practice over that time. Moreover, findings of an independent audit of industry users of the research outcomes of the P260 project are reviewed. The key to successful technology transfer is the active engagement of industry personnel at all phases of the technology transfer process. Other research outcomes include the novel application of new measurement tools and methodologies which include, for example, advanced surface analysis techniques. These new tools and methodologies have been pivotal to improving our understanding of factors that limit the flotation separation of minerals at plant scale. Future potential targets for technology transfer to improve flotation plant practice are discussed.
