Mineral formations, accumulated during technogenic activities greatly influence an economic and ecological situation in the Kola North. On the one hand, the dumps from extraction of mineral resources, tailing ponds of beneficating plants, ash dumps, wastes of metallurgical and mechanical engineering productions destroy the regionÆs environment and require taking certain measures and costs to bury or protect from weathering, oxidation, etc. On the other hand, technogenic mineral formations contain a lot of valuable scarce components. The amount of solid wastes increases annually, causing damage to ecology and economy. Researches conducted in recent years showed a possibility and economic expediency of comprehensive processing of wastes from different enterprises in Murmansk region and their use for production of new competitive commodity output, possessing high consumer properties. Thus, involving mineral wastes from Khibiny apatite deposits into hydrometallurgical industrial processing provides the basis for setting up a large beneficating-metallurgical complex. In this case ores and wastes from other deposits on the Kola Peninsula, containing titanium, rare, rare-earth and other valuable elements, may be involved into processing. Establishing such a complex will allow to organise a deep processing of natural resources, utilise some production wastes, improve ecological security and supply production with competitive output. Expanding the complex implies not only involving new mineral raw material into processing, but mainly deepening raw material processing, maximum utilisation of local natural resources and obtaining a wider variety of prime products.

Earthen covers are now widely used in the mining industry to control the generation rate and/or release rate of low quality drainage from piles of sulfidic minewastes. Covers are usually designed to reduce the water infiltration rate and in some cases may also reduce the oxygen flux to the underlying sulfides. Engineered covers have only been used since the 1980s, however, and there is very little field data on their performance in the longer term. This lack of information has implications for the degree of confidence that can be placed on the predictions of the environmental impacts of sulfidic minewastes, for the acceptance of close-out criteria by regulatory authorities and for the financial liability of the mining industry. Covers were placed on sulfidic waste rock dumps at the abandoned Rum Jungle uranium mine during 1984 - 1985. These covers were designed to reduce the water infiltration to less than five per cent of incident rainfall by both water shedding and storage-release mechanisms. Regular monitoring by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) demonstrated that the covers performed better than the design criterion for around ten years, but infiltration rates have subsequently increased. There is a 66 per cent probability that the infiltration rate now exceeds five per cent of incident rainfall. The cover on the largest pile, WhiteÆs heap, was sampled in pits dug at eight locations. Sampling was carried out at the end of the monsoonal wet season and again at the end of the ædryÆ season. This, together with laboratory testing, enabled cover performance to be assessed against five criteria: design, construction, cover material characteristics, physico-chemical characteristics and biological characteristics. We are of the opinion that the design of the cover was suitable to achieve the objectives of stability, water shedding, storage-release, and provision of a substrate for vegetation growth. Over most of the surface of the heap, the construction of the covers, drains and erosion prevention structures was in accordance with design specifications. However, several small and localised bare patches on the upper surface of WhiteÆs heap coincide with a reduced cover thickness, which is likely to have been due to poor construction in those patches. The construction of covers on minewastes is dependent on an adequate source of material meeting design specifications. From our limited examination, it appears that there was shortage of material for each of the three zones û a lower impervious clay layer, the moisture storage-release layer and the upper erosion-resistant layer for vegetative growth. An indication of this was that the upper layers in some areas were observed to be thinner than specified. We are of the opinion that this shortage of suitable material has been responsible for some of the changes observed ten years after emplacement. Physical and geotechnical testing indicated that the cover materials no longer meet the original specifications. In particular, the permeability at the 8 locations was found to be greater than specified, by up to several orders of magnitude. The higher permeability may explain the higher observed rainfall infiltration and moisture content of the waste rock. This increased permeability appears to be due to a combination of biological and physical processes û galleries formed by termites and ants and an extensive system of shrinkage/desiccation cracks formed by the development of a polygonal blocky structure involving the entire lower clay layer. The desiccation cracks may fill with coarser illuviated materials and form a conduit through which roots access the underlying waste rock. Measurements were made of oxygen flux into the heap as cover layers were excavated in the pits. They indicated that the full cover currently reduces the oxygen flux to 20 - 23 per cent of that into bare waste and that this reduction seems to be proportional to the cover thickness. It was also found that the oxygen flux into the cover is about four times higher at the end of the dry season than at the end of the wet season and that the difference is due primarily to the difference in moisture content of the cover. Recommendations are made for the design and construction of covers.

This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

The interaction between ore-bearing fluids and the siliciclastic rocks typically hosting orogenic gold deposits in Phanerozoic metamorphic terrains result in the development of a distinctive alteration halo. Along with petrological changes such as the replacement of chlorite by carbonate and the growth of sericite, characteristic geochemical modifications take place within this alteration envelope. These include variations in elemental abundances and more or less pronounced shifts in the H, C, N, O, and S isotopic signature of the ore system. æFingerprintingÆ these isotopic trends can provide exploration with additional vectors towards the ore zone, and yields valuable information regarding the source of the hydrothermal fluids and the solutes contained therein. Data from radiogenic isotope systems such as Sr-Rb, Ar-Ar, Xe-Ra, Pb-Pb, Re-Os, Sm-Nd, and U-Pb can constrain the kinematic history of ore-hosting structures, provide important clues concerning the absolute timing of gold emplacement, and enable the detailed characterisation of associated intrusives with respect to their magma source(s) and crystallisation age. Although high analytical costs, long turn-around times and the potential for misinterpretation prevent isotope systems from offering a æquick & dirtyÆ analytical method that would provide a significant advantage in exploration for orogenic gold mineralisation, the development of integrated four-dimensional ore genesis models depends heavily on constraints obtained from isotope mass spectrometry.

The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

Open pit mining has considerable damaging effects on the environment of the mining region. These harmful influences have to be controlled during mining operation until mine closure. Different sections of mined land, such as; pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined, have to be reclaimed through treatment of environmental pollution and implementation of a permanent post mining land use (PMLU) after mine closure. Implementation of a permanent optimal post mining land use (OPMLU) is one the most decisive criterion which effects on reclamation procedure, mine closure and their costs. Therefore to define ultimate pit limit (UPL), mine closure and reclamation costs should be entered in the calculation iterations same as the other variable costs of the projects. Estimation of closure and reclamation costs of a mining project is carried out based on the attained OPMLU and the specifications of the mine site. In this paper, a model is developed to provide OPMLU for pit area through fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (FMADM) technique. The model was implemented on a hypothetical copper mine in northwest of Iran as a case study. Lumber production was selected as OPMLU for the pit area. It is finally concluded that through the developed model, OPMLU for different sections of mined land in an open pit mine project is defined. Also closure and reclamation costs are estimated based on the defined OPMLU to achieve a more accurate UPL.

In mining industries, materials loading and handling costs represent a significant component of the total (capital and operation) costs. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading and haulage system with the lowest total cost. The optimal size and number of equipment calculation are very important task for mining engineering because loading and haulage equipment are major proportion of open pit mining cost. Capital and operating cost are considered in objective function with respect to interest rate, insurance and tax in non-linear form. Shovel and truck annual productivity constraint, fleet matching constraint and number of truck per shovel constraint are incorporated in this optimisation problem with continuous variables. This formulation will yield total cost minimisation per hour and good accuracy compared to previous methods.

Steinert provides a wide portfolio of Sensor Based Sorting (SBS) technologies, including the possibility to combine different sensor data in the development of the separation applications. This multi sensor approach provides a larger applicability and extensive flexibility for the technology. This effect is emphasized for mining applications, once every ore body presents its own features that can also comprise a large material variability. In this sense, every sorting application is customized and comprises a personalized solution. This means each project development includes a test work stage that approaches from the project discussion, test definition, up to test outcomes and processing development. In relation to very complex and large projects, a sorting pilot scale plant has become a crescent tendency. By having a pilot plant stage can represent a chance to test larger amounts of material from different mining areas, different mining projects, such as to consider different processing targets and application approaches. Based on that, a better understanding about the technology application can guide a more assertive development of large and complex ore sorting projects. The aim of this paper is to provide information about the applicability of the Steinert multi sensor technology at different pilot plants in South America. It consists in a compilation of laboratory test results, plant design and operational results. For that, a chromite, an IOCG deposit and a sulphide gold ore projects are presented. Additionally, the paper discusses the application of different sensor technologies combinations such as various processing targets, thus providing a wider understanding about sorting applications and flexibility.

Two new splitter designs for intercepting moving streams of matter are presented, the variable cross-stream splitter (vCSS) and the rotary stream splitter (RSS), which are intended for implementation in a fully automated modus. The vCSS facilitates obtaining up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios from automated laboratory flow paths, while the RSS divides the intercepted sample into 16 equal analytical aliquots. The splitters can process a wide range of dry, granular and free-flowing materials (<5 mm). The required weight for each subsample can be set without mechanical adjustments in the case of the vCSS. Typical applications are subsampling/splitting for X-ray fluorescence pelletisation (or fused beads) or splitting for average shift composite sampling or grain size analysis. The vCSS combines the advantages of riffle splitting (three user-defined subsample masses) with miniature bed blending and can accept up to 15 kg in total incoming sample mass. In practice, the automated vCSS can deal with unlimited ingoing mass fluxes, while the RSS is designed to operate at a user-defined fixed subsampling rate (1/16th in the tested version). Both splitters have the potential to be optimised and evaluated according to an application/user-defined total sampling error (TSE) + total analytical error (TAE) threshold. Both splitters were tested under adverse conditions and with compositions involving three components with properties representing typical mass fluxes and components concentrations in industrial and technological systems: phosphate concentrate 89.00 per cent (<500 µm), slag ten per cent (>2 mm) and glass spheres one per cent (750–1000 µm). The slag particles vary widely in particle shape, aspect ratio and surface roughness, while the glass spheres are extremely prone to bouncing and segregation (spillage). This test system is extremely difficult to split and thus constitutes a realistic worst-case scenario. While the vCSS does not comply strictly with Theory of Sampling demands for correctness, both splitters may well be able to deliver fit-for-purpose representative results if/when tested properly. Average relative mass deviations ranged from 1.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate (relative standard deviations of 20-fold repeated splitting) to 4.72 per cent for glass spheres and 13.04 per cent for slag. For the RSS, the average replication experiment splitting variation was 2.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate, 4.82 per cent for glass spheres and 11.1 per cent for slag. Both new automated online splitters would therefore appear to be able to be tuned to fit-for-purpose representivity (defined here as maximum relative reproducibility <5 per cent) for many non-extreme materials; however, it is always imperative to test every new type/class of material empirically. The concept of Big Data refers to data sets that are so large, variable and/or complex that traditional data processing applications struggle to integrate the data for effective investigation, analysis and value generation. With advances in sensor technology and smarter equipment, the mining industry is experiencing Big Data, and in a different way to how the intelligence and marketing communities experience Big Data. Future mining will bring larger, more complicated and diverse data sets increasing the strain on traditional data integration and investigation techniques. Block caving is an important mining method for the extraction of massive, low-grade ore deposits due to its low operating cost and high production potential, given the right orebody geometry and ground conditions. This paper focuses on block caving due to its increasing popularity and importance in the future economic extraction of multiple commodities. The block cave mining system (BCMS) is a complex interrelation of factors, and due to the reliance on natural processes within the system, it is one of the least understood mining methods. Obtaining information on the factors within the BCMS generates large, complex data sets on various time scales. Each sensor network within the BCMS combines spatial and temporal information with tens to hundreds of recorded parameters. Data sets are quickly moving from multidimensional to n-dimensional. Optimisation of the BCMS is only possible through a holistic analysis approach, thus involving the integration of multiple, diverse, n-dimensional data sets (Big Data). This paper presents a current example BCMS Big Data situation involving 12 sources of information with differences in volume, data format and frequency of data generation. This suitability of virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) as a solution to BCMS Big Data interpretation difficulties is then discussed. These 12 data sets can be effectively integrated using VRSV for intuitive and accelerated investigation of the BCMS. Potential future Big Data within the BCMS is presented involving 20 sources of information resulting from our increased need for monitoring and advancements in technology. Current methods of defining queries may not be suitable within these future complex, multidimensional data sets, and the potential of artificial intelligence algorithms within this system is discussed. These advancements in technology and machine learning lead to the requirement of live data acquisition and analysis. In March 1990, Heritage Mining conducted a 2000 line km high resolution aeromagnetic survey of all its prospects in the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the areas covered was the Onemana Peninsula, situated about 5 km north of Whangamata. Details of location and geology are given by Robson and Stevens (this volume).   The detailed helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Onemana area consisted of 163 line kmÆs of flying, and was carried out in order to assist in the definition of hydrothermal alteration and pre- or post- mineralisation structures. The line spacing chosen was 100 m, flown east-west, with a mean sensor terrain clearance of 80 m. Tie lines were flown north-south every kilometre for levelling purposes. The sensor was a Geoinstruments G-813 proton precession magnetometer in a towed bird, with data recorded using a Geoinstruments G-2000 acquisition system.   The Onemana alteration system is at the northern end of a major north-north east trending structural corridor defined by regional aeromagnetic surveys performed by AMOCO in 1980 (Rabone, 1991). T his structure hosts a number of other extinct hydrothermal systems including Karangahake and Golden Cross. In the Onemana contour plot the predominant north-northeast structures form the boundaries of a large area of subdued magnetism in the southern part of the surveyed area that is caused by intense hydrothermal alteration. This area is about 3.5 km long by 1 km or more wide and contains outcropping sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, as described in Robson and Stevens. A number of other structures transect this alteration zone, with strike directions ranging from northwest to north. A northwest feature notably truncates the zone to the south, while the northern end seems to be simi1arly bounded; however as data coverage ends at the coast, this feature is less conclusive.    Two distinctive types of strongly magnetic rock were discernible the contoured data. The strong negative magnetic anomalies the north and west are caused by fresh negatively magnetised rhyolites. This was confirmed by ground follow-up work that showed the rocks to be fresh biotite rhyolites with high magnetic susceptibilities.

Owing to ongoing development of new orebodies and changes to existing mining operations, new ore types with distinct mineralogy, porosity and textures are generated as feed for iron and steelmaking. Moreover, further product differentiation occurs as fine ores are increasingly beneficiated to achieve grade. A study was necessary to characterise a suite of iron ore fines in terms of their propensity for formation of quasi-particles and green bed permeability prior to sintering. In this study, two Marra Mamba bedded iron deposit (BID) samples, one Pisolitic channel iron deposit (CID) samples, two dense hematite samples (coarse and fine grained microplaty hematite), one hematite-goethite BID samples and one hematite-goethite bedded/detrital iron deposit (BID-DID) composite sample were investigated. Both Marra Mamba fines and Pisolitic fines exhibit the highest green bed permeability followed closely by hematite-goethite fines, fine microplaty hematite fines, hematite-goethite BID-DID composite fines and coarse microplaty hematite fines at a moderate sintering bed depth of 500 mm. While porous fines generally form better quasi-particles upon granulation than dense fines, the amount of moisture addition increased due to the moisture saturation of the porous fines. As sinter strands become ever larger and deeper, it was necessary to examine the granulation performance of these ore types at a range of bed depths ranging from 300 to 900 mm. On average, the green bed permeability achieved by different ore types, decreased by approximately 7.5 - 9 Japanese Permeability Unit (JPU) as the bed height was increased from 500 mm to 900 mm. In order mitigate the effect of lower bed permeability of the deeper beds, small additions of hydrated lime were investigated as a binding agent to facilitate the formation of strong micro-pellets. With the addition of three per cent hydrated lime, equivalent to approximately 2.3 per cent burnt lime, the majority of fines achieved adequate permeability for deeper bed sintering, with the exception of coarse microplaty hematite fines. In simulated coastal steelmaking sinter blends, it was found that the overall granulation performance of the blend is contributed to by individual fines constituting the blend. Therefore fines possessing favourable granulating properties impart better granulation to the blend as a whole.CITATION:Ooi, T C and Lu, L, 2013. New and existing gravity and aeromagnetic data are used to determine the structure of the Waihi region and to investigate any relationship between structure, hydrothermal alteration and epithermal mineralisation. The 24 mGal, 10 km diameter, negative Bouguer gravity anomaly which occurs south of Waihi has been modelled as a I.5 km deep asymmetrical basin. This basin, the Waihi Depression, is interpreted to be infilled with low-density volcanic rocks of the Uretara Formation and Whitianga Group, overlying older andesites of the Waipupu Formation. To the north and west, the margins of the depression are defined by the Waihi and Mangakino Faults, which have been modelled with dips of 45 - 60¦ to the south and west respectively. The southern and eastern boundaries of the Waihi Depression are defined by smooth, shallow dipping (15 - 20¦) boundaries. The Waihi Depression is interpreted as a fault-angle depression, resulting from southeast extension in the early Pliocene. The Waihi Fault is modelled as an approximately E-W feature, located to the south of Waihi. Small 2 - 4 mGal positive Bouguer gravity anomalies occur north and west of the margins of the depression, and correlate with known areas of hydrothermal alteration and areas of low magnetic gradient.

An extensive suite of elements are routinely assayed on all resource drill core samples to assist in deposit scale resource definition, local mine scale delineation of ore zones, and ore characterisation for the planning and scheduling of mining and processing of ores at Olympic Dam. This paper discusses a deposit scale geochemical relation that can be used by mine geologists to find more high-grade ore at the local mine area scale at Olympic Dam.A 3D grade shell representing 0.8 per cent Cu was created for a mine area using drill hole assay data. This defined the geometry of the ore zone. The Cu-grade shell was then overlain onto the existing resource block model to evaluate the relationships between the Cu-grade shell, copper and other elements. The strongest correlation was between copper and manganese. The block model showed a dramatic decrease in the concentration of manganese just below the below the Cu-grade shell.Several drill holes that intersected the Cu-grade shell were selected to evaluate the copper manganese relation at the drill hole scale. As expected, the individual drill holes displayed a strong inverse relation between copper and manganese. A geochemical footwall was then modelled representing 0.1 wt per cent Mn. Using both the Cu– and Mn-grade shells, several drill holes were designed/drilled and all hit high-grade copper.For the vast majority of the deposit the inverse relation between copper and manganese is valid; however, in areas with intense chlorite alteration (related to amounts of mafic to ultramafic rocks) this relation is not as strong, due to increased manganese in the rock mass. Even though using the copper manganese relation as a drill targeting method was not always as reliable in a few small areas of the deposit, it demonstrates the value of using existing assay data integrated with the resource block model to discover local mine scale geochemical relationships which can be used to more effectively design drill holes to discover high-grade ore at Olympic Dam.CITATION:Griffith, J and Ehrig, K, 2017. In the 1990s round flotation tanks were introduced as a result of the lower fabrication costs for larger cells. It was soon observed that round tanks held a number of further advantages over the traditional rectangular cells, such as better hydrodynamics, lower costs and reduced footprint per unit volume.In the last twenty years flotation cell sizes have increased almost exponentially and designs of 250 to 300m3 are a well established standard with plans for full scale pilot installations of 500m3. The option to install these large cells gives flexibility in circuit arrangements and allows efficient and economic matching of flotation lines with modern mill designs. The benefits of scale up are well known with reduced numbers of cells required, lower power costs per unit volume, etc. These benefits will be briefly reviewed with specific reference to the installation of 300m3 to 350m3 flotation cells at the Copperton Concentrator of Kennecott Copper in Utah, USA.The sophisticated techniques required to model these ‘supercells’ have led to a critical review of the fundamentals of flotation science and engineering. In addition to outlining the advantages of large flotation cells, this paper will review the science which supports, and occasionally challenges, the ongoing trend to larger flotation cells.

Stream sediment geochemical analyses were collated from open-file mining company reports and assembled in the REGCHEM computerised database at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited. The database operates on an IBM-compatible PC microcomputer using an application programmed in dBASE IV and termed GEOEXPL. By August 1992, data for 6383 stream sediment samples from 6335 different sites in the Coromandel Peninsula region (Hauraki Goldfield) were entered, giving a total of 29 292 separate elemental analyses. Preliminary statistical analysis using PROBPLOT on a set of data collected by AMOCO from the Mahakirau-Whangapoua area shows that these data are a complex mix of subpopulations related to mineralisation and different source rock types. Thresholds of 37 ppm copper, 31 ppm lead, 112 ppm zinc, and 2.3 ppm molybdenum, defmed by arithmetic models for the combined data set, separate the individual element sets into 'first order anomalous/lesser anomalous and background' subpopulations as follows: copper five per cent/95 per cent, lead five per cent/95 per cent, zinc one per cent/99 per cent, and molybdenum 15 per cent/85 per cent.

At Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system, TVZ, mineral distribution patterns in geothermal wells are analogous to those in epithermal veins. Fluid flow through geothermal wells is focused over vertical intervals >500 m with discharge at rates up to 90 l/s. Focused flow at similar rates also occurs in natural systems where hydrothermal eruption vents provide enhanced vertical permeability. These vents are commonly aligned with the tectonic fabric, indicating fault control at depth. We suggest that host rock strength and structural context exert significant control on the hydrological regime conducive to epithermal mineralisation.
