(communication to the Secretary *):—At the meetings of English technical societies it not infrequently happens that, during the discussion of a paper, someone will arise to say that although he highly appreciated the material presented, nevertheless he believed it would have been better if some other phase of the question had been more highly emphasized. Assuming that this form of discussion is permissible in the Institute, I should like to reiterate the point made by Prof. A. J. Moses that conclusive proof of the identity of the minerals in question is an essential feature of the study of ores in this way. This is also expressed by Paul Krusch in his recent valuable paper on the sulphide ores (in which he arrives at conclusions diametrically opposed to those of Mr. Graton), as follows: "The diagnostic properties of the various ore minerals are known to but a limited circle of investigators." Many earlier investigators began the study of ores beneath the microscope by reflected light, but discontinued their work, in most cases, because they were unwilling to undertake the great amount of preliminary work necessary to securely establish a basis for their inferences. It is evident that Messrs. Graton and Murdoch realize that the promised later paper on diagnostic characters will be the more important of the two, but the point should be emphasized to forestall a flood of literature from other investigators who may gain the impression that the brief survey of polished specimens is a vade mecum to incontrovertible conclusions as to any given ore deposit.

THIS note reports a determination of the melting point of germanium, and the liquidus of the Ge-Ga alloys; lattice constants of the a phase are given. The alloys were prepared by melting germanium (>20 ohm-cm resistivity) and gallium (99.6 pct) in evacuated silica tubes. The materials (50 to 70 g) were heated at 1000°C, held in the liquid state for about ¾ hr, and then cooled rapidly in the tubes. Points on the liquidus were obtained by thermal analysis which consisted of obtaining time-temperature data during heating and cooling the materials in high purity graphite crucibles and a helium at- mosphere. Temperatures were determined with a Pt—Pt-Rh thermocouple protected by a silica sheath. The couple was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated couple and also against the freezing points of copper, silver, aluminum, and the 28.1 wt pct Cu, 71.9 wt pct Ag alloy eutectic. The samples for X-ray analysis were prepared by heating small pieces of the ingots in evacuated glass or quartz tubes at temperatures between 600" and 900°C for periods ranging from 2 hr to 22 days, periods deemed sufficient for equilibrium to be attained, followed by quenching in water. The heat-treated samples were ground to powder for X-ray analysis. The lattice constants of the germanium-rich phase (a) were determined with a baok-reflection focusing camera. SINCE the deposits were found in 1927 in the Paradise Range of western Nevada, more than 1 mil- lion tons of magnesite and half a million tons of brucite have been mined and processed into a variety of granular refractory materials used as furnace linings by the steel industry. An additional million tons of magnesite were used during World War II to produce magnesium metal, and some magnesium oxide from the area is going into magnesia cements. Located near Gabbs, Nev., on the west flank of the Paradise Range, the principal bodies occupy an area a mile long by half a mile wide, and lesser occurrences have been found in a belt more than four miles long and in places almost two miles wide. Magnesite reserves containing less than 5 pct lime are estimated at more than 25 million tons. Reserves of better grade material are considerably less.

The purpose of this technical note is to briefly present some data on a phenomenon—recrystallization with concurrent deformation—that has been found to occur in a plutonium. This phenomenon is unusual because a plutonium is considered brittle, not easily deformed, and not easily recrystallized; the a phase is simple monoclinic having 8 atoms per unit cell and it is stable below about 115°C. The properties of the recrystallized metal were different from the as-cast metal. Even though a plutonium is difficult to deform, Ianniello successfully rolled it' and he also observed some recrystallization at 120°C.2 Pavlick and Hanson3 detected some recovery at 109°C but they observed no recrystallization. Gardner4 and Bronisz5 studied the compression properties up to 100°C but they did not report having seen recrystallization. In the present deformation studies of electrorefined plutonium pronounced recrystallization took place concurrently with plastic deformation in compression between 24" and 115°C. The metal contained less than 300 ppm total impurities with the major impurities being 100 ppm Am, 30 ppm C, 40 ppm W, and 25 ppm U; all other impurities totaled less than 100 ppm. The compression specimens were machined to dimensions of 1.2 cm long and 0.8 cm diam from as-cast rods having a density of 19.65 g per cu cm. They were heated to the test temperature in a high-temperature silicone fluid that was evacuated to 10-4 Torr. With this procedure the specimens oxidized a negligible amount, and the temperature was maintained within ±0.2°C for times up to 3 weeks. Deformation and recrystallization

Effects of heavy metal ions on the growth and the activities of iron and sulfur oxidation of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated. Mercuric, silver, and stannous ions inhibited both of the growth and the iron- oxidizing enzyme system of the bacterium. On the other hand, uranyl ion inhibited the growth, but it gave almost no effect on the iron-oxidizing enzyme system. The inhibitory effect of uranyl sulfate on the growth of the bacterium is intensified on lowering the cultivating ' temperature from 28 ºC to 7 ºC. In the concentration of 10-3M, cadmium and copper ions inhibited colloidal sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells 69 and 52 %, respectively, though they did not inhibit the iron-oxidizing activity at all in the concentration. On the contrary, stannous chloride did not givr any effect on the sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells, though it inhibited the iron-oxidizing activity 55 % in the concentration of 10-3M. Several differences were observed among the cytochrome systems of cell-free extracts of the cells grown on iron and on sulfur.

WE are approaching the depletion of our principal source of iron ore-the Great Lakes deposits, which have provided 85% of the nation's requirements for the past fifty years. This situation presents a threat to our standard of living and our position as a world power. Fortunately, in the Great Lakes region there are still tremendous quantities of potential iron ore in the form of the low iron, high silica rock called taconite. The economical extraction of iron from taconite will insure our future steel supply if no new deposits available to the United States even in time of war are discovered. In the new process presented here, the iron is reduced directly by a simple method and then separated from the silica. The product is "feed," not to the blast furnace, but to the steel plant. This process requires very much less plant, less physical and chemical treatment, and less fuel and auxiliary materials than the conventional ore concentration-blast furnace method. In my opinion, this new, fundamentally different approach offers a better hope for the solution of the iron ore problem.

With the introduction of rotary drilling in the Gulf Coast area, some thirty-two years ago, and its subsequent spread to other producing localities in the United States, there has been a constant change in the design of equipment. Only the general features remain, namely the rotating drill stem and the circulating mud. Only recently have the properties of mud and their behavior received attention from petroleum engineers, but circulating problems in present deep drilling demand further study and understanding. It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the relative changes in the apparent viscosity of muds with changes in temperature and to discover other physical effects due to heat. Very little information has been published regarding the effects of temperature on the viscosity of drilling muds. Maustl states: "The viscosity of most muds is decreased on heating, but the interesting thing is that the degree of flocculation is also increased on heating. There will be a greater tendency to seal off formations at high temperatures than at low temperatures." With regard to the effect of temperature on viscosity and yield point, Herrick2 states: "The variation of yield point and viscosity of mud with temperature.....is not very clearly brought out by the data available. Both appear to decrease slightly with increasing temperature up to 200' F." The experimental results presented in this paper further emphasize this point. Two types of viscosimeters are available for measuring the apparent viscosities of drilling muds: the efflux tube type as used by Herrick3 and Marsh, and the torsional type such as the McMichael or the Stormer viscosimeters. Closed-water circuits are justified today from two standpoints: economical operation and prevention of stream pollution. In today's modern preparation plant, it has been found very desirable to have the plant circulating water maintained at a relatively low solids concentration of around 3%. In so doing, bene-ficiation equipment can operate at a much higher efficiency. However, makeup water requirements would become excessive if the fines were to be removed from the preparation plant by bleeding a 3% solids concentration to a tailings pond. With the ever increasing percentage of —200 mesh coal, clay and slimes in the raw coal, coupled with the creation of these fines within the preparation plant, the need for water conservation for economy reasons becomes even more important. Because of stream pollution laws, tailings ponds have become very costly to operate and maintain, resulting in the necessity of employing an in-plant method of water recovery. Accordingly, the primary system employed in water recovery in the coal preparation plant today consists of a solids concentration device to thicken refuse solids while at the same time producing a sufficiently clarified effluent that can go back to the preparation plant for water reuse. The thickened product is then normally passed to a dewatering device that will produce a handleable solid that can be disposed of

FLOTATION-Mill operator's have recognized that slimes are detri-mental to the flotation concentration of zinc ores. The, presence of primary slime in many of the Wisconsin ores is largely responsible for the failures experienced in treating these ores by flotation. These failures have discouraged the adoption-of the flotation process by opera-tors in the Wisconsin zinc district. The removal of slimes by decantation seemed to be the obvious way to meet the problem of treating slimy or' clayey ores by flotation. To facilitate the removal of slime, it was decided to mix the ore pulp with sodium silicate, which acts to deflocculate the pulp.1 Deflocculation causes slime suspension, making it possible to separate the slime from the sands by decantation.2 Since the literature contains little definite information on the use of sodium silicate to deflocculate ore pulps, a series of tests was conducted to obtain the necessary information. Tests to determine the settling rates of sand and slime in deflocculated pulps were conducted on a dolomite-marcasite-sphalerite ore ground to minus 80 mesh (175 microns) and mixed with water to form a pulp. The deflocculator3 was Mallinckrodt 40° to 42.5° Bé. liquid sodium silicate (Na20 + 3.25Si02). .By microscopic analysis the suspended slimes4 were found to be minus 15 microns (approximately 1000 mesh).

A mutispectral scanner (MSS) obtains remotely sensed data of the earth's surface in vector form, one vector element for each spectral sensing band of the MSS. Data generated by either airborne or orbiting MSS systems are organized in a lattice of scan lines and elements within scan lines. Each element, called a pixel, is represented by an observational vector and corresponds to a relatively small specific area on the ground. The total observations for a sensed scene frequently are in the millions and are composed of a number of populations, each representing a different land form category. Based on samples from the populations, the mean vectors, or spectral signatures, and the covariance matrices for the categories may be estimated. From these, an among category covariance matrix and a combined within category covariance matrix can be found. The total among category variance is the trace of the among category covariance matrix. Canonical analysis finds a linear transformation matrix such that the first transform variable accounts for the maximum possible part of the total among category variance. Similarly, the second transform variable, orthogonal to the first, accounts for the maximum possible part of the remainder of the total variance, and so on. Such transformation often results in over 95 percent of the total variance accounted for in the first three canonical variables, even though the initial number of spectral bands exceeded twenty. Transformation of bulk data into three canonical variates allows color map products to be developed by assigning each variable to a different basic color. Such color products are believed to be more useful for photo-interpretation than color products resulting from any combinations of three of the initial spectral bands.

The methods of handling the oil output of the Mid-Continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. Wooden Gaging Tanks Practically all of the oil sold to pipe line? and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-Continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways—leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The sizes in common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to 'settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks. strapping and Calculations After a gaging tank has been strapped (measured) and its contents computed, a deduction of 3 per cent. is made from its computed volume. D. F. HEWETT, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*).-I am not prepared to discuss the metallurgical use of manganese in the form of alloys. In connection with other work for the U. S. Geological Survey, however, I have been investigating incidentally, for about 5 years, the American as well as other sources of manganese. There are some conclusions that come out of this investigation that may interest those whose greatest interest lies in the use of the alloys. From a geological point of view, most manganese ore deposits may be regarded as concentrated masses of manganese oxides, as there are few masses of the other manganese minerals that are rich enough in manganese and low enough in silica to warrant smelting. The deposits of the Huelva district, in Spain, which are largely manganese carbonate and silicate, are exceptions to this statement. Some deposits of manganese oxides, such as those of Russia and Cuba, are bedded with ancient sediments, and although they are clearly concentrated under unique conditions, the source of the manganese cannot be determined. Probably 60 per cent. of the world's production of manganese ore, or 95 per cent., if that of Russia be excluded, is derived from the superficial parts of deposits that have undergone weathering and enrichment near the surface. In other words, the situation with the manganese ore supply is such as it would be with regard to copper, if instead of being derived largely from deep zones of deposits of deep-seated origin, such as veins, it were derived solely from the zone of secondary enrichment. Manganese oxide occurs in all rocks but is most abundant in igneous rocks, of which, according to Clarke, it forms an average of 0.10 per cent. It also forms 0.05 per cent, of the average limestone, but only traces are present in shales and sandstones. It is interesting that although many commercially important manganese deposits occur in rocks that are but slightly richer in manganese than the average, the most important deposits occur in rocks of unusual character that are much richer in manganese than the average. Thus, the most important deposits of India and Brazil overlie or occur near masses of rocks that contain excessive amounts of manganese garnet and pyroxene.

THE following article presents notes and data compiled and computed by the writer for use in the determination of: size and slope of mill launders, details of junction boxes and downspouts, and distribution of pulp. It also includes pulp formulas, volume of discharge through bushings, paths of discharging streams, banking of turns and curves. In the design of a concentrating mill, the draftsman usually considers launders to the extent of providing ample "head" for transmission of pulp from one department of the mill to another. The superintendent of construction aims to build his launders wide and deep, and on a slope steep enough to ensure positive flow. So launders are laid generally on too steep a slope, with the result that the repair gang works to maintain launder bottoms and sides against the erosive action of the conveyed pulp. To this end many kinds of liners have been devised: concrete, mastic, white iron, glass, rubber. True, the reduction of slope to the point where a pulp will flow with minimum wear, will minimize labor and expense; but when the desired slope is not predetermined, the millman hesitates to readjust his launder slopes by cut-and-try methods. To the end that the desired size and slope may be found readily, the writer has: (1) conducted experiments with pulps of different specific gravity, screen analysis and dilution; (2) gathered a few graphic data from standard reference works (such as Peele's Mining Engineer's Hand- book and Taggart's Handbook of Ore Dressing); (3) computed several tables; and compiled results that have proved dependable for Utah Copper ore. It is quite possible that the following tables and graphs may not be applicable to all ores, but it is hoped that they may prove helpful, even in slight degree, in alleviating a portion of the trouble and migraine of some other millman.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being developed in southeastern New Mexico by the United States Department of Energy as a research and development (R&D) facility to demonstrate the safe disposal in salt of radioactive wastes resulting from defense activities. As part of the WIPP R&D program, a series of in situ tests will be performed to determine the behavior of drifts and storage rooms in the creeping salt medium (Matalucci, et al. 1982). Data obtained in these tests will be used to evaluate and improve numerical models used to compute the structural response of these drifts and rooms. Stress has been proposed as one of the parameters to be measured in the tests, and borehole inclusion stressmeters have been included in the instrumentation package. Cages of this type provide an indirect measurement of stress change in that they actually monitor borehole displacements which are then related to changes in the in situ stress away from the borehole. The relationship between stress and displacement is highly dependent upon the constitutive behavior of the rock in which the gage is emplaced. This relationship is well understood for rocks with linear stress-strain behavior (Fossum, et al, 1976), but, for creeping rocks like salt, the relationship has yet to be determined. Thus, inclusion gage response in salt must be investigated fully before stress measurements from the WIPP in situ tests can be used for comparisons with computed stresses The calculations presented in this paper were performed as part of an investigation of inclusion stressmeter performance in salt. They focus on the strain gaged stressmeter (SGS) (Cook and Ames, 1979) and on a hypothetical solid cylindrical inclusion with variable stiffness Issues addressed include the effects of creep and the effects of gage stiffness on stressmeter output for various loading conditions. The crystal orientation in silicon iron that has been given a particular treatment described by Goss,l has been studied by Goss, by Bozorth2 and by Sixtus,3 but their results do not agree and are almost entirely qualitative. The following pages give a description of the orientation of the crystals in the material as determined by means of X-rays and expressed graphically in a pole figure. The treatment consists of hot-rolling the material into strip and then giving it two cycles of cold reduction followed by recrystallization. This produces remarkably good properties in the rolling direction, the product having a maximum permeability in this direction of more than 25,000 and a permeability at 16,000 Gauss of more than 2200. It is now generally agreed that Goss's original conclusion1 that the crystals in the final product are randomly oriented was incorrect, since Bozorth2 and Sixtus,3 using different methods, have shown that there is a decided preference in orientation. Those writers, however, expressed their results only in terms of one or more ideal orientations with deviations therefrom. X-ray Data A strip of the material containing 3.1 per cent Si, prepared by Goss,† 1.2 by 0.0125 in., was etched rapidly in warm dilute hydrochloric acid until it was 0.005 in. thick, in order to eliminate the effect of the two surface layers. The specimen was then mounted in an integrating camera similar to one described in the literature.4 The purpose of this camera is to translate the specimen during exposure, so that a statistically large number of grains contribute to the pattern photographed. The camera also allows the plane of the specimen to make various angles with the X-ray beam. An area 5 by 1.2 in. was scanned by a beam of unfiltered radiation from a molybdenum target tube operating at 37 kv., and the measurements were made principally on the peak of the white radiation. HAULAGE in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct,‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* STUDIES BY THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on. a test block.
