It is necessary to understand the characteristics, phase changes and chemical reactions of flue dusts introduced from a furnace to an off-gas line in order to achieve the stable operation and the improvement. This study is to develop the dust reaction model for chemical reactions of dusts in an uptake shaft of smelting furnace and a waste heat boiler. Phase equilibria and reaction paths in this system were determined by thermodynamic calculation with experimental and industrial data. The oxidation reaction rate of dusts was determined by the gas film mass transfer controlling. And the sulfation reaction rate was evaluated by the unreacted shrinking core model. Kinetic parameters were estimated by reference data including industrial ones. The present study with the developed model shows various effects of temperatures, dust particle sizes, and O2 gas partial pressures on dust reactions. INTRODUCTION The flue dusts from a copper smelting furnace move along a furnace off-gas stream into an uptake shaft and a waste heat boiler (WHB) and electrostatic precipitator(s). It is necessary to control the dust quality in order to stabilize the operation because the sticking behaviors differ depending on the phase of dusts. Phase changes of dusts are caused by chemical reactions at given conditions such as temperature and partial pressure of gases. Therefore, it is required to understand the phase changes and chemical reactions of dusts in order to perform the improvement and stable operation. The present study carried out the investigation to understand their fundamental knowledge. Especially, this study was focused on the kinetics of chemical reactions of flue dusts, developed the model. In particular, the scope of development and utilization of the model was defined as the uptake shaft of the Mitsubishi S furnace and the S-WHB radiation section in the Onsan smelter. Information needed for the modeling work referred to data from these processes.

As an aid to operations an expert system using the knowledge gained from the experienced specialists was implemented in the field.The AHT operating and maintenance assistance expert system will reason through the information given, arrive at conclusions and give advice to operations, technical and management personnel. It will provide comprehensive real-time troubleshooting assistance for the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical subsystems of the ART. The ART expert system has many benefits to Inco which include increased skill levels of ART operations and maintenance personnel, reduction in ART downtime, standardization of troubleshooting procedures and reduction in ART operating and maintenance costs. In the future, the expert system application will be linked to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), maintenance and statistical software to display current and historical trends of variables from a centralized historical database. As well, a wide variety of features will be integrated into the system including AutoCad drawings, graphics, photographs, voice and video capabilities."

"IntroductionOne of the more puzzling geological enigmas, in the writer's opinion, is how rock can move sideways with respect to other rock. In the writer's study of regional northwest-southeast folding in North America (Burr, 1980), he may have found the answer to horizontal offset.Horizontal OffsetSideways movement or horizontal offset does not mean that the movement was, or is, horizontal. As indicated below, the actual movement may be at a high angle from the horizontal. However, it is the horizontal VECTOR, or offset, which is measured on surface by geologists. Vertical movements (thrust, normal, reverse) can be understood, as they involve blocks of rock , generally separated on four to six sides, which have been pushed up or subsided. Vertical faulting across dipping strata can produce APPARENT horizontal offsets. However, this thesis deals only with ACTUAL offsets.The ProblemFigure 1 is a plan view of a simple hypothetical horizontal offset. Three vertical dykes are intersected by a fault lineament. Two dykes exhibit no movement; the middle dyke has been offset a distance (a). Vertical faulting would have produced no horizontal offset. How can a horizontal distance (a) disappear or appear? Rock expands or contracts in infinitesimal amounts.SolutionThe map (Burr, 1980) shows the writer's interpretation of regional northwest-trending folds in Ontario. The writer made two observations about horizontal offsets during his thirty year study of these folds:1) All major horizontal fault lineaments strike at a high angle to the northwest fold axes. Many of the northwest-trending lineaments are fault s, but their movement is essentially vertical.2) Close to many of the known horizontal offsets (and several lineaments), there are areas where plunge reversals are so frequent and close together it is impossible to draw in all the fold axes at a scale of 1 inch = 4 miles, and, in the highly faulted Espanola area southwest of Sudbury, Ontario, all the indicated folds cannot be easily separated at a scale of 1 inch = 1 mile. The writer has observed folds less than 30 feet apart next to the strong Puskitamica-Chibougamau fault in northern Quebec."

"In mid-1986, a world-class mining enterprise was created in Highland Valley, British Columbia, bringing together the copper mining operations of Lomex and Cominco . In 1988, Highmont joined the new partnership.Highland Valley Copper is the largest copper mine in North America in terms of both tonnage mined and tonnage milled, and it is one of the largest in the world. Due to its relatively low ore grade its production of copper in concentrate ranks about ninth in the Western World.The current eighteen year mine plan is based on ore reserves of 761 million tonnes. The daily milling rate is 133 000 tonnes. At the end of mine life, a total area of approximately 6500 hectares will have been disturbed. At this time, vegetation has been established on about 600 hectares and while work will be done during the operating years, it will not be until the end of mine life, about 2008, that the last half of the land can be reclaimed and revegetated.Once final reclamation has been accomplished, Highland Valley Copper will have completed its "" temporary use of the land"". In the meantime, about 1250people have had employment for about 50 000 man years, at wages ranking among the best in Canada.IntroductionTo provide and sustain our way of life, we need steel, copper, aluminum, zinc and many other minerals.To sustain mining, we must have adequate ore reserves and replacement of reserves as they are mined. Each year the search becomes more difficult as more of the Earth's surface is investigated and depo sits are mined. This calls for aggressive and sustained efforts.In British Columbia, past and present mining activities have disturbed less than one-tenth of one per cent of the land.With today’s technology, mining operations can be substantially reclaimed and thus complete the cycle of ""A Temporary Use of the Land""."

"With the implementation of more advanced monitoring, control and locating systems in surface mines, there is an ever increasing need for their mine-wide integration toward achieving over-all optimization. AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. is developing the basis for a comprehensive real-time monitoring, control and information system called the Total Mining System or TMS. This system is being designed to address both current and future needs of open pit mines toward improving productivity and minimizing costs, through better two-way information flow between each component in the operation. At a basic level, feedback from equipment and process monitoring will enable decision making to be based on quantitative, on-demand information, thus permitting proactive rather than reactive planning. Dynamic planning would be a valuable tool as market conditions fluctuate, equipment fleets age and variations in the grade, quality, geometry and hardness of the mined material all contribute to either changing production targets or levels of achievable performance. Such a capability could be implemented within the next two years.At a higher level, and within five years, autonomous operation and/or real-time supervisory control of mobile and stationary equipment in open pit mines will be achieved. A discussion is provided in regard to the development and implementation of an autonomous haultruck and blasthole drill, to demonstrate the need for such a system.This paper outlines a preliminary program for the design, development and implementation of this system, primarily in relation to high-level communications and its role in the future automation of open pit mobile equipment."

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). "IntroductionThe Highvale Mine is located 70 km west of Edmonton , Alberta on the south side of Lake Wabamun. It has been developed by TransAlta Utilities Corporation as a captive mine to supply fuel to two genera ting power plant s. The mine is owned by TransAlta and operated under contract by Manalta Coal. Within the mine permit area, TransAlta own s the right to mine 80% of the recoverable surface mineable coal.The planning process starts with the annually produced 25-year energy forecast which is provided by the Electric Utility Planning Council (EUPC). A 1983 forecast predicts an average annual increase in energy requirements of 4% over the next 25 years. Put another way, the requirement will double before the end of the century. A lar ge part of the base load generation of the Province of Alberta is provided by th e plants fueled from Highvale Mine. The Highvale Mine is therefore expected to maintain a high output over a long period of time.Mine PlanningMine planning is an ongoing, interative process that draws from many sources. All levels of planning draw from the same sources but du e to the different processes and objectives of each planning class, the degree of influence may differ. The planner becomes then a coordinator bringing together data and excerpts from several disciplines in groups. An underground mine fire can seriously threaten the lives of all personnel in the mine. This fact makes fire emergency planning a high priority in the mining industry. A fire emergency plan includes a means of warning miners of the existence of a fire, and the need to evacuate or retreat to a place of refuge. The warning alarm must be fast and must reach all miners, regardless of their location or work activity. Means of fire warning are varied, and include such methods as stench, flashing lights, telephones, and word-of-mouth (messengers). Unfortunately, none of these methods are entirely satisfactory. Stench can be slow and seldom achieves total mine coverage, especially in high-back room-and-pillar mines with low ventilation velocity. Telephones are effective only where personnel are close enough to hear the phone ring. A novel fire warning alarm system has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines which enables instantaneous warning of all underground personnel. The warning alarm is sent by an electromagnetic signal which penetrates through mine rock from a transmitter to small person-wearable receivers. Each miner's cap lamp battery could be equipped with a small receiver and when a fire or other emergency occurs the miner could be alerted to the danger by a blinking of the cap lamp. Testing of prototype equipment has demonstrated that the transmitted signal is capable of penetrating through over a mile of mine rock and activating the receiver. This paper describes the theoretical basis for through-the-rock ultra-low frequency electromagnetic transmission, design of the prototype transmitter and receiver, test results, and status of commercial development of systems utilizing this technology.

"The Brunswick No.12 site concentrator processes 10,500 tonnes per day of a complex lead, zinc, copper and silver ore producing four concentrates by differential flotation. Research over the years has led to increased understanding about the mineralogical and flotation characteristics of the ore. A pilot plant study conducted at Lakefield Research, primarily designed to investigate the technical feasibility of semi-autogenous grinding, provided an opportunity to test recent theories about grind size,, reagent schedule and flowsheet configuration.A fundamental approach was taken with each of the unit processes involved in grinding and flotation. Basic operating and metallurgical criteria were established in each area and a step-by-step implementation program initiated in the plant.Significant improvements in metallurgical and financial performance have been realized through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment and without major capital expenditure. Current operating practice is detailed and metallurgical advancements cited.INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Brunswick is a publicly traded company with majority ownership held by Noranda Minerals (63%). In addition to the No. 12 underground mine, the company operates a lead smelter and phosphate fertilizer plant in Belledune, N.B. and maintains a 25% interest in a joint venture with Noranda Minerals' Heath Steele mine near Newcastle, N.B. Through the four operations, a total of 2000 people are directly employed with fixed assets totalling Cdn$187 million (BM&S, 1991)."

We present research on cable fault location methods for mines where coal dust and methane explosions are a frequent potential hazard. The methodology and devices for low- and medium voltage cables fault location are well known and applied in classical power distribution networks. They are based on solutions for underground mines with a high risk of explosion. The lack of a safe solution for the location of a fault has contributed to the initiation of a research project by a group of Polish companies. The consortium consists of research institutes (Institute of Innovative Technologies EMAG, Tele and Radio Research Institute, Central Mining Institute GIG-KD ?Barbara?), Silesian University of Technology and a private entrepreneur MARTECH PLUS. Fast and exact determination of fault location is one of the important factors for minimizing power outage time. The lack of technical solutions to obtain measurements in a secure way leads to the use of the methods connected with a high risk of explosion. For example, the application of high energy can lead to arc discharge where there is a fault in insulation, creating the risk of an explosion. Measurements of methane concentration along the analyzed section of the cable reduce the risk; however the shock wave generated by the electric arc may raise coal dust and make an explosive mixture, which is an object of ignition. Low energy methods, like those based on reflection waves, have low sensitivity for high- and medium-resistance faults. This technique has difficulties in joints, which create false echoes. The fundamental problem is to determine the topology of the network using a reflectogram and find anomalies of a different nature ? not only open and short circuit. Included in the scope of the project is an analysis of Polish legal regulations related to fault location and operational work for low- and medium-voltage networks. Two of the methods used on the surface were selected as feasible to implement under explosion hazard conditions. In the process of development of the fault location methodology, installation features characteristic of underground mines were used, namely access to the whole length of a cable. This is the attribute that provides an opportunity to do measurements that are usually not possible for typical surface power nets. To carry out laboratory tests, a dedicated measuring stand with various types of cables was built. The authors describe the principle of operation of the fault locator and the results of the laboratory tests carried out on the cables with built-in damage (prepared for tests). Results of the work will be the basis for the next stage of the project associated with operational analyses of the prototype.

Roast-reduction smelting (RRS) of nickel concentrate, combined with flash smelting of copper concentrate, was one of the process options that Inco considered as a means of meeting its 1994 sulphur dioxide abatement target at its Copper Cliff operations. RRS involves deep roasting the nickel concentrate in fluid bed roasters. The roaster off-gas is treated in a sulphuric acid plant, and the low sulphur calcine is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur- deficient matte. The latter material is converted to Bessemer matte in Peirce-Smith converters, with minimal evolution of sulphur dioxide, and the converter slag is reverted to the electric furnace. Excellent nickel and cobalt recoveries (Ire obtained. This paper discusses the development of RRS, including extensive commercial scale testing at Inco's Thompson Smelter, and its key operating parameters.

"This paper could be more appropriately titled ""The Application of Vacuum Filters to Underground Minewater Treatment. in a previous paper co-authored by the writer (1) the history and development of minewater treatment at the Sudbury District Operations of the International Nickel Company was outlined. It is the intention of this paper to dwell more specifically WIth the the application of the vacuum filter to a problem found in most, if not all, underground mining operations. In the preparation of this paper the writer has made liberal use of the illustrations and text of the paper previously noted.Last year we heard Mr. Nemeth discuss the basic mechanisms involved in vacuum filtration (2), and today Yr. Cunliff has exposed us to the selection of the filter media (3). I will now briefly review the various vacuum filter designs that generally lend themselves to metallurgical dewatering applications.DRUM FILTERSThe revolving drum-type which filters on its outside periphery is illustrated in Fig. 1. This is the Oliver or Drum filter and represents the first commercially available continuous vacuum filter. The original design dates back more than 50 years, but with the exception of the method of discharge, is identical to the units being marketed today. This filter is generally applied to slow filtering slurries. The cake may be discharged in several ways; strings, scraper blades, rolls or by passing the filter cloth over a small diameter discharge roller (belt discharge).THE DORRCO FILTERThe revolving drum type which filters on its inside periphery is illustrated in Fig. 2. Here the slurry lies in the drum and the cake discharges through a chute or conveyor. This type of filter is most often applied to fast-filtering slurries.THE DISC FILTERThe revolving filter which filters on the vertical plane of the disc is referred to as the Disc or American-type filter. This represents the most inexpensive design in terms of cost per square foot of filter area. This filter is widely applied, but is probably more suitable for slower draining pulps."

"High iron solution concentrations often result in the formation of basic ferric sulfate during the high temperature oxidation of sulfidic materials such as base metal and refractory gold concentrates. Consequently, the “Hot Cure Process” followed by limestone neutralization is required to facilitate subsequent processing and/or disposal of the leach residue. The present paper discusses strategies that can be employed to influence the composition and nature of the high-iron content leach residues produced during pressure leaching.INTRODUCTION Control of iron deportment in hydrometallurgical processing remains a key challenge for a range of reasons. Strategies generally relate to the control of conditions under which iron is optimally rejected (Demopoulos, 2009). Supersaturation provides the driving force for crystallization and this can be controlled by a number of factors that include (1) pH and/or Eh control, (2) the presence of matrix anions and impurities, (3) dilution, (4) complexation and dissociation and (5) manipulation of the rate at which the metal to be precipitated is released to solution. Each of these factors is impacted by temperature. Good control of crystallization is essential to the control of precipitate properties such as the degree of crystallinity, stability, particle size and quality which covers both the extent of impurity uptake and suitability of the precipitate for waste disposal. The quality and properties of iron precipitates in turn can impact downstream processing. It is the aim of this paper to discuss the generation of iron-containing residues produced during the pressure oxidation of sulfidic ores and concentrates and how the nature of these can be controlled to potentially facilitate further processing. A brief overview of several related topics will now be given and include, where relevant, discussion of work undertaken in our laboratories. In addition, brief discussions of selected process options that enable good control of iron rejection will be provided."

Processing material at a consistent rate through the continuous countercurrent decantation (CCD) thickeners presented a major bottle neck to unlocking additional value from one of the post-flotation streams at the Kansanshi processing plant. The manual operation of the thickeners making up the CCD train resulted in frequent imbalances and process upsets across units. The automation of CCD trains is notoriously tricky as the available manipulated variables are outnumbered by the parameters requiring regulation. The implementation of an advanced, auction-based, control philosophy to manage the movement of both slurry and solution inventory through the train addressed this parameter imbalance and lead to the stabilisation of the circuit. Since the commissioning of this control strategy: an additional 7 200 dmt/day (+36% throughput) of material can reliably be processed through the train, the number of monthly downtime events has reduced, and a saving of $354 000/month in reagent cost has been achieved. INTRODUCTION CCD operation Agitated leaching is a common method used in hydrometallurgy to extract a metal from its host ore. The host ore is initially finely ground to liberate the surfaces of the valued minerals and improve the kinetics of the leaching process. The ore is then contacted in an agitated tank with a lixiviant to dissolve the desired metal into the aqueous phase. The resultant slurry from the leaching process comprises of a solution pregnant in the metal salt and a barren ore. The first purification step taken after leaching is to wash the pregnant liquor solution (PLS) from the depleted ore. On the industrial scale, a set of between two to ten thickeners arranged in a countercurrent configuration is often used to carry out this separation (Perry & Chilton, 1973). The slurry is introduced at the head of the train and a wash solution at the tail. The two streams are pumped through each thickener countercurrent to one other. At each stage the residual PLS in the slurry is mixed and diluted down with the countercurrent overflow solution from the downstream thickener. The diluted slurry is fed into the thickener where the solids separate out through gravity sedimentation. The settled solids are channelled towards the underflow of the thickener by a rake mechanism and pumped downstream to the next thickener in the train. The outcome is the recovery of a PLS from the overflow of the lead thickener and a slurry of washed solids from the underflow of the tails thickener.

"INTRODUCTIONGold is found in many natural states, native nuggets, loose grain in river sands, veins in rock, as well as associated with sulphides, oxides, etc., disseminated more or less minutely.Its high value in recent years has spawned new technologies to win values from sources once considered too lean for commercial recovery. Cyanide leaching from fine milled ore or tailings, from upstream recovery operations, coupled with adsorption onto relatively coarse granules of activated carbon, concentrate the gold enough to be converted to bullion by time-honoured methods.The carbon granules are fragile. Size degradation in handling must be minimized not only to prevent loss of gold on fine fragments of carbon that could pass with the barren tailings, but to maintain adsorption efficiency. Besides, the granulated carbon itself is costly. Circular Vibroscreens are winning acceptance for dewatering carbon granules thanks to their gentle yet effective performance in gold recovery systems around the world. In contrast, the use of Vibroscreens has been proven to be less costly for the initial purchase and installation. Also, these circular vibrating screens require less power and less space. "The availability and reliability of large grinding mills and their Gearless Mill Drives (GMDs) are of paramount importance for the grinding process. Although GMDs have been in service for decades, and are known for their operational efficiency (reliability and robustness with reduced operating cost per ton), compared to conventional drives, in the last decade due to certain reasons some failures led to serious unscheduled shutdowns and significant insurance events.The majority of these notable ""insured"" failures have happened on GMDs installed on relatively large mills, as the financial impact of a failure is proportional to the through-put of the mill. Despite the occurrences of these events, as mining operations are driven by lower ore grades and the ability to continue reducing operating costs per ton, the trend for having larger mills is still very present and there is no reason why this trend should not continue.It is obvious that if not handled correctly, the possibility of large value GMD loss events, coupled with the continuing increase in mill size or required availability and reliability targets, could potentially lead to major conflicts as it becomes difficult for the insurance companies to judge the risk and hence may result in hesitation to insure these grinding circuits. This paper will not only describe the conflicting situation from both an insurer's perspective and from an equipment supplier's perspective, but also how these conflicting challenges can be successfully mastered. It has to be noted that not only the mining companies themselves, but also their insurance companies and the involved equipment suppliers have a common interest: to reach the highest availability and reliability in order to avoid or at least minimize unscheduled shut down times, and most importantly prevent unplanned events that result in extended production stoppages or reductions in through-put of GMD driven mills.From the very beginning onwards, the complete service concept together with emergency plans must be integrated on every level in the design of the grinding circuit. This approach must be implemented continuously and without compromises by all involved parties during all following stages, such as basic design, detail design, manufacturing, quality inspection and testing, packing, transportation, storage, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. The concept of formal risk analysis related to mill operations, maintenance and spare parts strategies must be an integral part of mining companies’ decisions related to the selection for installation and continued use of large mills powered by GMDs. The service concept in place for operating mills shall also have a clear focus on very early detection of any abnormalities, so that the risk can be mitigated and unscheduled shutdown times avoided. However, if a major failure occurs, then procedures and tools shall already be available in order to ensure that production impact is minimized."

The latest chapter unfolded this summer when the Commodity Tax Review Group released its important report. Whatever sales tax changes, if any, are finally adopted will have profound effects on many aspects of doing business. The capital-intensive mining industry will not escape these effects.IntroductionThe Federal Sales Tax Review Committee, established by the Minister of Finance earlier this year, has published a report that is sharply critical of the government proposals to shift the incidence of federal sales tax from the manufacturer level to the whole sale level (sales to retailers). The Report recommends a continuance of the present manufacturer's tax, for the present, but with significant changes that would increase the tax cost on certain imports, smooth the administrative machinery and make appeals and determinations more open and equitable. For the longer term, the Report recommends a shift of the tax base to the retail level.Reform of the federal sales tax system has been under consideration for several decades.
