Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. Editor's note: information for this feature was taken from the published APCOM proceedings. Computer trends, with special focus on the reasons for computer use, grabbed the lion's share of attention at the 23rd worldwide meeting on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM 23). However, technical topics did not provide the meeting's sole focus. The last-minute inability of certain former communist countries to fund the travels of a few scheduled speakers was a reminder that science does not operate in a void. As with all technical progress, the APCOM presentations raised interesting questions regarding interrelated organizational dynamics and political and socioeconomic issues. Consider US Bureau of Mines (USBM) research to design an expert control systems to "duplicate" an experienced, "good" operator during automated underground roof bolting. In his presentation of the project, Takach, Jr. stressed the importance of preserving the ability to switch from automatic to manual drilling control. From a technical standpoint, this allows the expert system to "learn" from a good operator. As important, he said, is that this flexibility decreases the human operator's sense of being replaced by the machine. The question arises: Which will loom larger in union minds, increased operator safety through remote opera¬tion or the potential for total operator replacement? Like any new product, computer technology relies on marketing to aid its acceptance and use. In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

"‘Gas hydrate’ is the common term for a solid material formed from the combination of various gases as ‘guest’ and water as ‘host’. A series of large-scale scientific drilling and coring programmes conducted since 2000 revealed that natural gas hydrate exists in a wide variety of accumulations in the sediments. The scaled-up onshore and offshore field production tests during the last decade show that gas production technology will be realized to make gas production from gas hydrates viable in the future, recognizing its potentials as one of the future sustainable energy resources.The total produced gas was approximately 470 m3 by the hot water circulation method over 6 days of operation in the permafrost-associated Mallik 2002 project in the Mackenzie Delta of Canada. In the Mallik 2007-2008 project, the gas was successfully produced stably by the depressurization method for 6 days, up to 13,000 m3 cumulatively. The depressurization method applied in the Mallik test was shown to be an effective way to produce gas from gas hydrates. The Alaska field trial to inject mixed gas of CO2 and N2 to exchange CH4 in 2012 was successfully done for the first time to produce maximum 1,270 m3 per day. A remarkable achievement was made by Japan when it completed its first offshore production test in the Eastern Nankai Trough, producing approximately 120,000 m3 of methane by the depressurization method over 6 days in March 2013. The technical challenges and scientific uncertainties obtained from Nankai Trough production test provide Korea with more considerations as to the aspects of well completion, reservoir formation and seafloor stability, sand control, flow assurance, environmental monitoring, and etc., due to the different geological setting and geomechanical properties of the Ulleung Basin in Korea."

Exploration record In preparing this paper, a list of world class discoveries prepared in 1983 has been updated. In both surveys, the following criteria were used in the definition of world class discoveries: • deposits that are continuously operated and consistently return a profit even in periods of low metal prices; • deposits large enough to significantly affect a medium sized corporation's profits; and • these deposits should be in the lower one-third cost per unit of metal produced for all similar deposits. Only 70 discoveries in the last 40 years qualified as world class deposits using these criteria. Unfortunately, this restricted population was too low to develop meaningful trends. The numbers were therefore enlarged to include all significant discoveries. The principal feature of a significant discovery is that its size and grade would yield more than $500 million in revenue using average metal prices for the last five years. A significant deposit should also meet some of the standards for a world class deposit. A tabulation of these deposits are shown in Table 1. The number of discoveries increased to 166 from 70 using the revised classification. The relationship between the number of discoveries per year and their location by continents was prepared from these data. Figure 1 shows the number of discoveries per year for the nonCommunist world. It also shows estimated and actual nonCommunist world exploration expenditures per year and the commodity price index. These data show that modern exploration started in the late 1940s, with the tempo picking up rapidly in the 1950s. The maximum discovery rate occurred in 1962. Thereafter, the discovery rate gradually declined to the present. This occurred despite a real increase in expenditures from about $200 million/a in 1955 (1982 constant dollars) to more than $900 million/a in 1980. Thus, these data suggest a significant decrease in the exploration success ratio (total exploration expenditures a year divided by the number of significant discoveries) in the last 20 years. As an example, $70 million was spent for each significant discovery in the early 1960s as compared with $225 million in the late 1970s (expressed in 1982 constant dollars). However, with the general declining trend of discoveries, one can perceive a more pronounced drop in 1973 and then a sudden increase in 1974, 1975, and 1976. This increase is probably related to the inflation of the 1970s that in turn created an environment for the explosion of commodity prices, as shown by the commodity price index on Fig. 1. Thereafter, the decline in discoveries resumed in 1975 until the present. Exploration performance by regions North American discoveries are shown in Fig. 2. The graph shows three pronounced high discovery peaks in 1962, 1975, and 1980-81.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The exploitation of the underground is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Besides mining, alternative ways of utilization are playing an increasingly important role. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

Mining is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases and is the focus of increasing attention from green groups and regulators. Miners need to know their own carbon emissions and how they compare with the rest of the industry. Miners and mining companies need to know where they fit in the emissions curve. Who is in the bottom quartile? This article is based on research report data from minecost.com and Metalytics Pty Ltd which detail the specific carbon dioxide emissions for 208mines producing 90% or more of western world copper, zinc, lead and nickel in 2007. The copper and nickel mines also include Norilsk in Russia, KGHM in Poland and Kazakhmys in Kazakhstan. This is the first time that such information has become available.

PRINCIPLES OF MINE PLANNING During the initial planning stages, all mining operations are analyzed and evaluated in a similar fashion. This similarity holds true because the mine-planning procedure can be reduced to a network of interrelated systems that are tied together by a common philosophy of mine planning: namely, that the resource is to be extracted in a manner which is safe, efficient, and profitable. The success of the mining operation cannot be guaranteed unless each of these three requirements is met. Fig. 1 shows a flowchart for the initial planning of any mining operation. Notice that there is a preplanning stage that leads to the planning of four interrelated systems. The preplanning stage includes property exploration, estimation of production and manpower requirements, and the establishment of construction timetables. The four systems, evaluated after the pre-planning stage, are broken down into the following: (1) Excavation and handling system, (2) Strata control system, (3) Operating support system, and (4) Service support system. The Excavation and handling system includes the selection of all the equipment for the removal of the resource from its in-place deposit (e.g., draglines, continuous miners, rock drills, etc.) and for the transportation of the mined material from the face (e.g., belt conveyors, trucks, etc.). The Strata control system incorporates all those considerations which maintain the integrity of the roof, ribs, floor, and overburden both during and after the extraction phase; typical considerations in this area include pillar sizing, artificial support of the immediate roof in mine entries, and subsidence protection. The Operating support system contains the "necessary evils" of mine planning; the system consumes a large percentage of the mining engineer's planning time but does not contribute to the actual extraction of the resource. However, if proper attention is not paid to the various components of the system, such as ventilation, drainage, and power, then the mining operation will not perform to its capabilities. Finally, the Service support system is composed of those operations which keep the mine running efficiently; typical examples of these include maintenance and sup- ply. One important concept that Fig. 1 is designed to emphasize is that the four systems are interrelated; typically, a slight alteration of one can affect the performance of another. If these interrelationships are ignored, the effects on the system can be disastrous. The mine preplanning stage and the four subsequent system evaluations constitute the Analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart. After this portion of the study is completed, the overall projected operation can be evaluated by techniques such as financial analysis. This last step in the study is referred to as the Synthesis of the previously calculated parameters into an overall plan. Much has been written about the overall evaluation of mining properties, but, over the past thirty years, very little has been written about the analysis of mine- planning systems in a coordinated manner. Further, those texts which attempted this topic have failed to give sufficient examples for successful implementation, thus supporting the operating engineers' lament that it is easy to discuss theories but difficult to show applications. This text is intended to bridge this gap. Examples of the various stages of the analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart shown in Fig. 1 will be covered in this text, with the exception of the Service support system, since this system is oriented more toward day-to-day planning than long-term mine planning. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZATION The benefits that can be derived from an international standardization of the units used in mining engineering calculations are numerous. The interchange- ability of equipment parts and the ability to analyze and compare performance and design specifications on an equal basis are just two of the goals desired by both manufacturers and mine operators. Unfortunately, conversion to an international standard has not been rapidly achieved by engineers in the United States, due to their training under the English system. The Society of Mining Engineers of AIME has made the commitment for the adoption of the Systeme International d'Unites (SI) in all mining engineering calculations. Since many practicing mining engineers and students in undergraduate programs still find difficulty in relating to SI units, the calculations in this textbook will use the English system, with Table 1 available for conversion into SI units.

The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.

Extending an organization?s knowledge base throughout the entire enterprise can improve operations. Until recently, though, field operations were often left out of the information loop, as extending high-bandwidth communications into harsh environments often proved impossible due to thermal extremes, physical hazards and caustic chemicals. However, advances in the design and manufacture of rugged fiberoptic cables have now enabled the successful installation of 10-gigabit transmission links to places such as mining operations. The experience of Consol Energy exemplifies how plant managers can successfully enlist ruggedized tight buffered cables to help carry the efficiency of ERP communications into even the most challenging work environments. ?As part of our ERP implementation, we extended our corporate network underground into our mines using fi beroptic cable,? said Tom Prokop, manager-site support for Consol Energy. ?We?ve actually had rooffalls bury the cable between rocks and still did not lose data communications. Our maintenance personnel are now able to access our ERP system while underground at locations that can be up to 32 km (20 miles) away from their desks or the warehouse. Access to the corporate network allows them to order parts, look at electronic schematics, access monitoring data, no matter where they are in the mine. With a few hundred workers below ground, this immediate access translates into a time-savings that adds up in a hurry.?

Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

Fourteen samples of pyrite-bearing Archean greenstone rock (d < 6.35 mm, 0.04% < St < 1.22%) were characterized (particle size, chemistry, mineralogy) and subjected to laboratory dissolution testing. The only sulfide and carbonate minerals identified were pyrite and siderite, respectively. Quartz, chlorite and sericite typically comprised 90 to 98 percent of the mineral content. For the first 60 weeks, seven samples with sulfur contents less than or equal to 0.16% produced drainage pH values exceeding 6.0. Over this period, six of the seven samples with sulfur contents greater than or equal to 0.20% produced drainage pH below 6.0, with minimum values ranging from 3.2 to 4.7. The seventh sample (0.72% S) had a siderite content of 18%. Small amounts of magnesium and, to a lesser degree, calcium carbonates present in the siderite apparently dissolved to neutralize acid and maintain drainage pH above 6.0. Sulfate release rates generally increased as sulfur content increased, and the rates of pyrite oxidation estimated for individual samples were roughly half to five times that reported in the literature for the abiotic oxidation of pyrite by oxygen. Observed neutralization potentials ranged from 0.2 to 2.0 g CaCO3/g rock.

The Jollyville Transmission Main will be a 10.5-km- (6.5-mile)-long, 213-cm (84-in.) diameter rock tunnel. The tunnel will pass beneath the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, which was established to protect two endangered bird species, six endangered cave invertebrates and a threatened salamander. To address the sensitive habitat that the transmission main is to pass through, the city of Austin developed an environmental commissioning (EC) process that brought together environmental engineers and scientists, the city?s project management team and the designer team to work collaboratively to meet the city?s goals of producing a cost-effective design while also protecting the environment. This paper describes the environmental commissioning process and the benefits it brought to the project and environment through some unique environmental mitigation measures to protect this sensitive area.

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

High-speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However, it has been widely used in the industrial mineral field for more than 30 years. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits this requires new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two copper operations is discussed here to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD), a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are explained. The initial drive in high speed stirred milling technology was toward ultra fine grinding where the mill product has an 80 percent passing size of 15 µm (937mesh) or less. More recently, a number of installations have occurred in a more conventional regrind setting. Few conventional copper concentrators require such fine grinding to attain satisfactory copper grades and recoveries. So other advantages must be considered here rather than just the ability to grind fine with good power efficiency.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]
