The production and consumption of industrial minerals in the United States traditionally have played important roles in mining and in the supply of the bulk of basic raw materials to the economy. This diverse group of minerals extracted and consumed by a variety of industries accounts, on a weight and volume basis, for most mineral-based products consumed in our economy. Industrial minerals form the bulk of the basic raw-materials feedstock for most of the construction, agricultural, and inorganic-chemical-manufacturing sectors, and a good portion of the transportation, manufacturing, organic chemical, and service sectors of the U.S. economy. In this presentation, I discuss current estimates of the amount and value of industrial minerals mined compared with all mining in 1997. I then present a summary of 1997 production of industrial minerals by several end-use industries. This is followed by a historical perspective of the consumption of industrial minerals as a subset of all basic materials, with special emphasis on the aggregates industry. The presentation concludes with a look at the geographic distribution of industrial mineral operations in the United States and some thoughts about the future.

"Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m (14.9-ft) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal m (400 ft) of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly more than 1.6 m/d (5.3 ftpd). It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s second largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m/d (36 ftpd). By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m (430 ft), averaging 1.4 m/d (4.7 ftpd), and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m (800 ft) mark and Bertha was averaging 3.6 m/d (11.9 ftpd), achieving as much as 12.8 m (42 ft) of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on Dec. 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt.Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm (0.9 in.) diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to monitor groundwater conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

30.1-THE SCOPE OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING JAN M. MUTMANSKY JAN M. MUTMANSKY 30.1.1-DEFINITIONS The terms "systems engineering," "systems analysis," and "operations research," common in today's technical literature, often are interchanged because of their similar meanings. However, some differences exist which need explanation. The most convenient way to achieve an understanding of the differences is to start with the definition of a system, namely, a collection of components which interact in a specific manner to accomplish a common objective. Accordingly, a haulage truck, a computer, a missile, a mining company or a nation each may be considered a system. Systems engineering generally can be defined as the conception, planning, design and engineering of any system of interacting elements so that the objective of the system is automatically optimized. Thus, systems engineering normally is con¬cerned with systems not yet activated.',' Systems analysis may be described as a scientific method of making decisions based on a quantitative or other objective evaluation of all action alternatives. It is very similar to systems engineering but usually is not considered to be restricted to problems of design prior to use. While the previous two disciplines are somewhat vague and can encompass a great variety of engineering functions, operations research can be more specifically defined as the application of mathematical models to the problem of optimizing the objective of any predefined system. Systems analysis and systems engineering are closely aligned sciences but opera¬tions research differs in the following ways. First, it generally is associated specifically¬with optimization and mathematical models while the other two often are not. In addition, it, is used predominantly on well-defined problems which can be ex¬pressed in mathematical terms. However, systems engineering or systems analysis may deal with highly complex social or governmental systems which may be ill¬defined and unsolvable by the classical methods of operations research. Finally, systems analysis and engineering always strive to look at the entire system to avoid the problem of suboptimization often necessary in operations research because of the necessity for a mathematical model. Because of his more extensive system, however, the systems engineer often is less able to find the optimal system. In summary, operations research, systems analysis and systems engineering are very similar in purpose but one, operations research, is more mathematical in nature and forms an important part of the other two activities. Other definitions which may be helpful are provided by Griffiths 3 Wilson,4 Falkic 5 Hall,2 Quade and Boucher, 6 and Flagle et al. 1 30.1.2-METHOD AND TECHNIQUES The systems or operations research approach makes use of scientific problem solving. The basic procedure comprises the following general steps: 1. Definition of the problem. 2. Construction of a model of the system. 3. Testing of the model under known conditions.

Discrete element is a numerical technique for describing the collision dynamics and motion of an assembly of particles. In particular, calculations are done on full three-dimensional space with a force-contact law for collisions and Newton’s law for subsequent motion. It may be said that there is no empiricism in this approach. The paper describes the full scale simulation of large diameter semiautogenous grinding mill of size 40X24 ft. It is shown that the simulation predicts the power draft of plant size mill extremely accurately. Also these simulations have been adapted uniquely to assess the motion of pebbles and slurry in pulp lifters. The passage of slurry from pulp lifters into trunnion is extremely important since flow-back and carryover must be avoided at all cost. The dynamics of slurry flow through pulp lifters is also described in this paper.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Sample collection, preparation and analysis are all steps in a single process designed to provide information about a much larger amount of material than the sample itself. For example, information about the ash content of a unit train load of coal may be derived from a single, relatively small sample of perhaps a few hundred pounds (liters) extracted from the entire shipment. These three steps can be thought of as links in a chain, allowing the simple analogy that the strength of the chain, or, in other words, the value of the information is only as strong as the weakest link. Sample collection, discussed in Part 1 of this chapter, is critical because analytical procedures can do no more than reveal the characteristics of the sample presented to the laboratory. If that sample does not properly represent the population to be characterized, neither will the analysis of that sample. Sample preparation is also a critical part of the chain. Any change in the nature of a sample between the time it is collected and the time it is analyzed will appear to reflect the nature of the population. For example, sample preparation procedures that allow air to partially dry the coal sample before reaching the laboratory will cause the sample analysis to indicate a lower moisture content than the sample originally had. Other changes can be more subtle. Second only to moisture loss, oxidation reactions generally cause the greatest problems. Oxidation of a coal sample can alter surface properties, changing flotation response. In extreme cases, combustion parameters, such as caking or agglomerating properties or mineral composition, such as pyrite content, can change. Water samples can also be altered by oxidation. For example, ferrous iron can oxidize to ferric iron, possibly changing water quality parameters such as pH. Sample analysis, the subject of Part 2 of this chapter, is the final link in the chain. Obviously, no laboratory procedure can correct for problems created by improper sample collection and preparation. At the same time, poor analytical techniques will create incorrect information about the total amount of coal from which the sample was extracted (the population) in the same manner as improper sample collection and preparation. The key to gaining correct information about the population is to view these three steps as parts of a single process. Following proper techniques through only one or two steps of the process will not produce accurate information.

The never-ending quest for gold-bearing ore deposits is a primary industry in Canada, employing people of widely differing expertise. The exploration models for gold deposits are generally geologically complex and the targets have relatively small cross-sectional areas. These problems are compounded in Canada by the minimal outcrop exposure in most mineral provinces and the high percentage of water-covered areas. Naturally the chances of successfully delineating an economic gold deposit are very much greater if all parties involved can act as a team of explorationists constantly confemng amongst themselves particularly as the applicable disciplines generally overlap and complement each other. Three case histories (see Figure 1) are presented to illustrate this philosophy with emphasis placed on the role of the geophysicist in translating the exploration model as defined by the geologist into physically measurable parameters and identifying target areas with similar characteristics. The Conwest-Miminiska property in Ontario is a grassroots exploration play. Additional ore reserves needed to be delineated on the Salmita property in the Northwest Territories. At Laura Lake, near Chapais, Quebec geophysical methods were employed to trace thin high-grade mineral intersections under deep overburden and severe cultural interference.

In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

This article examines some important trends in East-West trade in non-fuel mineral products, in particular the recent decline in Eastern bloc exports of such products. It relates this decline to an improvement in Soviet terms of trade; a deterioration of geological and locational conditions in Soviet mineral production; an increased integration of the CMEA-countries based on a regional pooling of resources; and a surge in demand for mineral commodities in Eastern countries coupled with a slowdown in Western economic growth. Finally, it evaluates to what extent these determinants may evolve in a different direction during the eighties and thus foster East-West mineral trade. Eastern1 bloc trade in mineral products is a subject of perennial interest in the West. When exports increase, there is much talk of the dangers of dependence on the East for critical fuels and materials. When imports increase, talk turns to the danger of Soviet dependence on Western supplies. A common fear is that the USSR may not only seek to meet its own resource needs but also deny the access of Western countries to these resources. This paper, like three other recent additions to the lite5ature on Soviet foreign trade of commodities2, tries to put matters in clearer and cooler perspective. The first section evaluates the structure of East-West mineral trade and tries to identify some important trends of recent years. The second section relies on supply and demand factors, as well on the Comecon connection (the intra-Council for Mutual Economic Assistance mineral cooperation) to explain why there has been a reversal in the mineral trade trend since the end of the seventies. The last section evaluates the factors which could stimulate East-West mineral trade in the future.

In today's world coal market, coal quality is becoming increasingly important. Often the coal quality parameters are one of the crucial considerations in the development of a coal mine. Because of the user's tighter specifications and because of strict environmental regulations, coal producers are being called on to predict with increasing accuracy, not only the quality of their product but also the variability of that quality. This area of reserve evaluation is naturally receiving a great deal of scrutiny. Consolidation Coal Company has developed reliable and sophisticated methods for predicting coal quality, but the company's efforts continue to search for even better techniques. The following is a step-wise summary of The methods currently used by consolidation coal company, with A recent project used as an example. Two of the newer, and as yet experimental techniques will be briefly discussed.

Since 1977, Amax Coal Co.'s Belle Ayr mine near Gillette, WY, has been the largest producing coal mine in the US. In its 10 years of operation more than 90 Mt (100 million st) of coal have been shipped from the mine's facilities to electric generating plants across the country. It is thought to be the largest amount ever produced in US history from a single coal mine. The railroad is Belle Ayr's lifeline for moving this massive volume from a relatively isolated corner of northeastern Wyoming. There are no waterways for barge traffic, and highway truck hauling would be impractical considering the quantity and distance of coal to be moved. Transportation in the Powder River Basin-at least for the present-is strictly unit trains. An average of four unit trains daily load at Belle Ayr. These trains average 108 cars long, with a capacity of 91 t (100 st) per car. Burlington Northern Railroad serves the Powder River Basin, but locomotives supplied by Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, and Kansas City Southern are a common site as well, since coal will often travel these lines too on its way to utility plants in Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Oregon. When Belle Ayr opened transportation in the Powder River Basin was in an early development stage. As the first large-scale coal shipper in the area, Belle Ayr was the only user of a 27-km (17-mile) railroad spur south of Gillette. Other mines, however, were to open soon on the abundant, low-sulfur reserves. Today, less than a decade after Belle Ayr's debut, 13 large-capacity mines operate near Gillette. The 27-km (17-mile) spur that once served only Belle Ayr has been extended 177 km (110 miles) south to service other mines as well, and to tie into a major rail line in central Wyoming. The Powder River Basin is now served by a wishbone-shaped track configuration that allows train movement north into Montana, south into Colorado, and east into Nebraska for connections across the country. Operations at Belle Ayr are closely tied to train arrivals and departures, with coordination essential between mine operations and rail personnel. "Train movement in the Powder River Basin has evolved to the point where we are fine-tuning mining operations to coordinate them with a more dependable transportation system," according to Joe Jefferson, transportation supervisor with Amax Coal's western division. Development of the Falconbridge Ferronickel Process for treatment of lateritic nickel ores began with laboratory work in 1955, the year the Company commenced exploration of its concession in the Dominican Republic. Process development centred on selective reduction originally directed to producing calcines amenable to ammonia leaching, but later found suited to electric smelting. The reduction step of the process was developed in a 25 tpd shaft furnace pilot plant located in the Dominican Republic, to which was later added an electric melting furnace. After almost 3 years of development work on this scale the plant was expanded to 100 tpd for fixing design data for a commercial plant. This took the form of the 30,000 ton per year Nickel Ferro-nickel Complex of Falconbridge Dominicans, which started up in 1971.

Elastomeric liner products have been used for over two decades in a wide variety of uses including pond liners, hazardous waste barriers, dam face rehabilitation and mining applications. Asphalt blended with polymers is enjoying renewed interest in the engineering community because of its durability, high yield attributes, fewer CQA steps due to seamless installation, and ease of installation and repair. As in other lining technologies, advancements in polymer chemistry and improvements in installation techniques have had dramatic impact on the quality of fluid-applied asphalt (FAA) membranes. Membrane 6, man­ufactured by Deery Oil, Inc. for over 16 years is a hot-applied polymer modified asphalt membrane that can be applied to a variety of substrates in a reinforced configuration or installed directly on an asphalt surface. By blending thermoplastic polymers with asphalt, very favorable stress/strain characteristics can be achieved (Chambers, 1980). Typically the membrane will yield under rel­atively low stress and also exhibit high elongation capability. In service applications where puncture resistance is a concern, fluid applied asphalt materials have the flexibility and com­pressive strength under heavy loading that leach pad designers may find attractive. Additional security is achieved if long term service life is important as in the case of radioactive waste con­tainment. The Department of Energy selected Membrane 6 over seamed liners for a surface barrier that must isolate and contain radioactive waste for 1000 years. Asphalt has a long history of use as a water-stop material and it is believed that this natural construction material combined with SBS polymers will per-form for a millennium. (Freeman, 1994) The process of installing Membrane 6 varies according to job size and the type of surface to be protected. Lining applica­tions on compacted substrates require the membrane to be applied to a scrim cloth (fig 1). Some early pioneers in FAA technology neglected this step and therefore never achieved per­formance levels that satisfied regulatory guidelines. The scrim provides a cohesive surface that promotes membrane flow while achieving high impermeability (2Xl0 '11).

INTRODUCTION Homestake Mining Co. owns and operates the Bull¬dog Mountain mine near Creede, CO. Lead-silver con¬centrates are produced from ores extracted from narrow veins which dip from 1.04 to 1.39 rad (60 to 80°). An¬nual mill throughput is approximately 90 700 t (100,000 st). Ore shoots average 2 m (7 ft) in width and the ore is often weak, muddy, and poorly consolidated. Walls can be either strong or highly fractured along the strike of the veins. Cut-and-fill methods were initially selected to mine the deposit and considerable overhand mining occurred during the initial stages of the mine. Because of un¬stable ground conditions, mine management recognized that other methods would have to be employed. Undercut-and-fill mining was adapted to extract the loose ore from narrow veins and is presently the primary method used. Approximately 80% of the annual pro¬duction is extracted by this system. Loading ramps are positioned along the strike of the vein on 90-m (300-ft) intervals to allow for 45-m (150-ft) long cuts in each direction from the extraction raise. This interval was selected for efficient slusher operation and stope cycling. Loading ramps rather than chutes were selected for ore movement into 4.5-t (5-st) Granby-type cars because of extremely sticky ore conditions. Mined-out areas are filled with deslimed mill sands. Sand is pumped from the mill into two mine storage dams where the water is decanted. Each dam has a 544-t (600-st) capacity. Sand is pumped into the mine at a 30 to 40% slurry through 2195 m (7200 ft) of 51-mm (2-in.) thick wall pipe. When called for, sand is reslurried within the dams to a density of 55 to 65% and pumped to the particular mine opening requiring fill. Dry cement is added to the slurry prior to pumping. The capacity of the mine fill system is 20 t/h (22 stph). DEVELOPMENT Vertical development below the main adit level oc¬curs on 61-m (200-ft) intervals from an internal winze. Main haulage drifts or laterals are 2.7 x 2.7 m (9 x 9 ft) in section and driven parallel to the vein structures. Ground conditions generally dictate that better progress can be realized in the footwall than in the hanging wall. A distance of approximately 21 m (70 ft) is maintained between vein and drift openings to accommodate a smooth 18-m (60-ft) radius curve for crosscuts which are driven on 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Approximately 18 m (60 ft) of tail room is driven past the vein inter¬section to accommodate train loading. Ore and waste are hauled using diesel or electric driven locomotives operating over 18-kg (40-Ib) rail [762-mm (30-in.) gage]. Loading ramps are established above each crosscut¬ vein intersection. Scram drifts are then driven in the vein to determine the width and grade of the ore. If a prior decision to mine the block had been reached, then the scram is driven only far enough [about 12 m (40 ft)] to establish a drawpoint and scraper tail room. In most cases, the drawpoint is a 2.1 x 2.1-m (7 x 7-ft) cutout driven about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the footwall. On the level above, a raise bore station is established in the footwall to one side of the crosscut-vein inter¬section. The station is of sufficient size to accommo¬date a Robbins 41R raise boring machine. Support for the station is accomplished with 1.2 and 1.8-m (4 and 6-ft) roof bolts and wire screening. Once completed, a 152-mm (6-in.) concrete slab is poured and the raise drill set in position to center the 1.5-m (5-ft) diam hole approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) from the vein footwall. A 229-mm (9-in.) pilot hole is then drilled to the scram cutout below and reamed back to full diameter (see Fig. 1). STOPING Initial mining in a typical undercut-and-fill stope be¬gins from the top of the borehole. The initial cut can be either immediately beneath the track level or the old scram drift depending upon the particular situation. Cuts vary but are generally 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high. Support is accomplished by square-set timber, overhead caps, or roof bolts and screening depending upon ground conditions. Once the initial cut is removed, underhand timber and screen is installed and cemented sand fill placed. The stope is then ready for undercut mining. Prepara¬tion work begins with sinking 4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 ft) on the borehole plus cutting a slot to the vein. As sinking progresses, hanging sets are installed to provide man¬way and service facilities. Hanging sets 1.7 m (5 ft 8 in.) long and 1.6 x 2.2 m (5 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 4 in.) in section are installed with steel hangers similar to shaft sets. Framed 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) timbers are made up in advance and shipped to the stope during sinking operations. When manway and service facilities are completed to the floor of cut to be mined, generally 3.65 to 4.3 m (12 to 14 ft) below the previous sand fill, the ore is removed to the hanging wall plus a round each way along the vein. Levelers or long stringers are then installed over the raise opening to support the work deck, slusher, and grizzly opening. All waste and ore from the sinking process is fed by gravity to the raise (see Fig. 2). Once the stope is equipped, mining pro¬gresses outward in each direction from the grizzly open¬ing. Stope equipment consists of 907 kg (2000 lb) pull air tuggers, timber skips, 11-kW (15-hp) ventilation fans, 15 to 22-kW (20 to 30-hp) electric slushers, 762 to 1270-mm (30 to 50-in.) scrapers, 67-mm (25/a-in. ) jackleg drills, as well as other drilling and blasting supplies. In narrow stopes [generally less than 2 m (7 ft) wide], no support is required for the underhand caps of the previous fill. Where wide sections in the vein occur, segment braces are installed beneath the caps to insure that the sand support cannot slip away from the hanging wall. Public-private partnerships (PPP) are gaining in popularity at the federal, state and local levels as the public sector seeks private capital to finance infrastructure and other projects that traditionally have been funded with public funds. In general, a PPP involves a development agreement between a public owner and a private sector concessionaire. Under the development agreement, the concessionaire is responsible for financing, designing, constructing and typically operating and maintaining the completed project for a concession period (often multi-decades in duration). The concessionaire typically enters into an agreement ? the design-build agreement ? with a design-builder to design and construct the project. The concessionaire may secure financing from banks, investors or from a combination of these and other sources (collectively the financier). While the PPP experience in the United States has been modest to date, an increasing number of projects involving tunneling or other significant subsurface work are already being delivered in the PPP mode. Public owners have significant options to address risk allocation for subsurface conditions on PPP projects. The same sound and fundamental principles of fairness in risk allocation that apply in other major subsurface projects should be applied and adopted in the PPP context

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines' (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. The overburden responses in gently inclined orebody mining are different from those in horizontal orebody affected by the orebody dip angle. In particular, the mining-induced stress presents asymmetrical distribution characteristics spatially, resulting in stress concentration and large-scale pressure relief phenomenon in the surrounding rock. As a result, frequent ground pressure disasters such as roof collapse and barrier splitting occur frequently. Moreover, the ground pressure evolution law and the interaction between stopes in multistope mining are complex. The effective ground pressure control measures cannot be taken due to unclear understanding of the evolution of stress and displacement fields, justifying the investigation of the distribution and evolution of underground pressure for safe and efficient mining.

Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

For most geologists and miners the term "asbestos" refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for? uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The United States Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile. amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as "asbestos" if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions; length -greater than 5 micrometers, maximum diameter -less than 5 micrometers, and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer causing agent) it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment.

Samarium (Sm), one of the rare earth elements (REEs), and cobalt (Co) are used in the production of SmCo permanent magnets, which have excellent temperature stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Of the two types of SmCo magnets, one contains a high amount of iron, approximately 15.2 percent. This paper focuses on the recycling of iron (Fe)-bearing SmCo. In this study, an oxidative leaching process with nitric acid was developed to eliminate iron through in situ hydrolysis and to dissolve REEs and Co. The influence of experimental conditions on the formation of an amorphous iron compound through the hydrolysis of Fe3+ in a nitric acid environment was thoroughly examined based on a Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimal parameters for oxidative leaching were determined to be an acid concentration of 3 mol/L, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/10, and a process temperature of 60 °C.
