The movement of radon away from its source in porous media is determined by two key parameters: the fraction of the total radon formed which enters the intergranular pore spaces, termed the emanation coefficient, and the transport processes which exist in these pores such as diffusion and convection. The first parameter, the emanation coefficient, is of primary importance since it is a measure of the actual amount of radon which is free to migrate within the media. The effects of particle size and radium concentration on the emanation coefficient were examined using a quartz-pebble conglomerate ore from the Elliot Lake mining district of Ontario. It was found that the smallest particle size examined (<74 µm) had the highest radium concentration and contributed the most to the radon emanation. A one-to-one correspondence between radium concentrations for the various particle size fractions and radon emanation was not observed. Samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and very small particulates were observed to be present on the particle surfaces. When these very small particulates were removed from the host particle surfaces by rinsing, the radon emanation decreased by a factor of 17. This result indicates that most of the emanation comes from the very small particles. The effect of moisture on the emanation coefficient was examined qualitatively and a trend of increased radon release with moisture content was noted.

In the post-World War II years, metals analysts and statisticians have tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) industrial production (IP) growth rates, Williamson said. This was because the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. "However, the correlation was exaggerated," he said. During times of expanding IP growth, metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked to reduce costs. Nonetheless, he said, a reasonable correlation could be painted between IP growth over the longer term and metal demand. "Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war, it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world&apos;s IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, lately including Japan," Williamson said. The so-called "developing world" had been of little consequence. The Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities that, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers, he said. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated, Williamson said. It does not take into account the worldwide political changes that have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China. "It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs," he said, including the western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are attempting to satisfy the expectations of the great mass of the world&apos;s poorer people, Williamson said. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America, have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. "Now, with free market forces at work, their aspirations will start to be met." Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate. The production of raw materials has to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world. It will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries.

INTRODUCTION The inactive uranium mill tailings investigated in this study are located in two mining districts, Elliot Lake and Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. The sites exhibit a mixture of surface features consisting of dry areas, with or without vegetation and areas covered with water. On the edges of the water bodies, indigenous vegetation has invaded the tailings beaches [ Typha] spp. (Tourn.) L. a dominant plant on these tailings beaches, has been studied for the uptake of radium-226 and lead-210 (Kalin and Sharma, 1981b) from the tailings. It was found that most of the radium-226 remains in the roots of the plants, and that the solubility of radium-226 in control soil differs from that in tailings. The uptake of radium226 by vegetation and other biota is related to the solubility of the element in water. Factors controlling the solubility of radium-226 in uranium mill tailings are of interest in assessing the environments effects of these wastes. Rusanova (1962) found that the soluble or extractable amount of radium from the soil is inversely related to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium in the soil. Experimental work has clarified some aspects of the leachability of radium from uranium mill tailings (Levins, et al., 1978; Wiles, 1978, and others). Halvik, et al., (1967) studied the effects of pH and chemical composition of surface water on the liberation of radium from uranium mill tailings and uranium ore. He found that an increase in pH, up to a value of pH 9, decreases the amount of radium released from the tailings and the ore. A positive effect of calcium chloride was noted on the leachability of radium. Benes (1981) reviewed the physicochemical forms of radium and its migration in water. Based on experimental work, he identifies primary factors which determine leaching of radium from uranium mill tailings. The ratio of the volume of the leaching solution to the weight of the leached sample; the composition of the leached solids and the leaching solution, and finally the pH of the leaching mixture are of importance. He emphasized that a scarcity of field data exists, which would relate experimental work to the actual situation in the tailings ponds. Inactive tailings ponds in Ontario are 16 to 23 years old, and processes which are of importance in evaluating the long term effects of uranium mill tailings in the environment can be studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the leachability of radium-226 from the tailings under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sample Collection A description of inactive tailings sites in Ontario, where the tailings and the water for this study were collected, can be found in a report by Kalin (1981). [Typha] spp. specimens were excavated from 16 different locations along with the tailings attached to the roots of the plants. A tailings sample from the surface area, around the plant, was secured before the excavation. Tailings samples were also collected from dry areas free of vegetation in the vicinity of the wetland stand. Surface samples (depth 0-5 cm) and samples at a depth of 20-25 cm were secured. Water was collected from the shallow tailings beaches around the vegetation stands. Sample Preparation The roots of the plants were washed free of tailings with distilled water. The resulting thick slurry of tailings was allowed to settle in the wash basin for five minutes and the supernatant water was decanted. The remaining saturated tailings were brought to 400 ml volume with distilled water in a beaker. The slurry was mixed with a magnetic stirrer for two 24-hour periods. After the first 24-hours, the slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes and the supernatant water was removed. The remaining sediments were suspended again in distilled water (400 ml total mixture) and leached for a second 24hour period. The tailings slurries from the different locations had a solid to liquid ratio, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 grams of dry tailings material per millilitre. The variations in the ratios are the result of differing fractions of coarse and fine tailings on the sites. In the final leachates, the solid to liquid ratios of the samples were 0.17 (±0.1) g/ml. The pH of the surface water and the leachate was determined with an I.L. Portomatic pH meter. All the tailings samples were homogenized in a mortar and brought to dryness at 75 to 85°C. Seeking to implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to improve the safety of their tailings facilities across the globe, mining companies are motivated to invest in new technologies to recover valuable minerals from tailings. One solution being evaluated is the use of magnetic separators to concentrate ultrafine tailings. However, this approach is energy intensive as it requires high magnetic fields to recover ultrafines, and usually results in low mass yields. Additives that modify pulp rheology and surface properties, or selective flocculate ultrafine particles, were tested to enhance the performance of magnetic separation. Promising results in laboratory scale testing different types of additives confirmed that it is possible to increase the mass yield, keeping the selectivity of this stage.

Congress, under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, charged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the responsibility for safe and permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste in a geologic repository. The waste will consist of spent fuel from commercial nuclear generating plants and reprocessing activities. Under direction of this law DOE is currently evaluating Yucca Mountain in Southern Nevada as the candidate site for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository. Presidential, Congressional and State of Nevada approval are needed for repository construction to proceed after successful completion of site characterization and recommendation of the site to Congress. The DOE will submit a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct the geologic repository. Following successful construction DOE will update its license application to operate the repository.

AMPS[. has completed a rationed grinding ball test in a 2.93 m x 2.93 m ball mill at Climax Molybdenum Company. The test consisted of purging the ball distribution formed by charging 100%, 76 mm carbon steel balls with a distribution formed by charging 50% 76 mm and 20% 51 mm alloy steel balls. The resulting change in ball surface area yielded improvements in both tons ground and fineness of grind with a significant reduction in total ball consumption. This paper summarizes preliminary studies leading to the plant test, grinding efficiency results, and future plans to optimize the ball charge.

In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

The design-build contract was awarded to Hampton Roads Connector Partners with HDR and Mott MacDonald retained as lead designers in a Design Joint Venture. This paper will highlight some of the e challenges related to the design of the twin bored tunnels from spaceproong, tunnel enabling wors, segmental lining design and durability considerations.

Approximately 30% of the world’s production of soda ash comes from mining and processing of naturally occurring deposits of sodium carbonate containing species. Of these deposits, the largest and most profitable have been the trona beds found near Green River, Wyoming. Processing of trona ores is water-energy intensive, particularly due to unit operations of calcination, dissolution, and evaporative crystallization to wield a high-quality dense soda ash product and reject the insoluble gangue species, primarily in the form of oil shale. However, it is speculated that the glass-manufacturing industry, the largest consumer of soda ash, may be able to use a product of a lower grade and consistent level of the insoluble constituents. Thus, pre-concentration of trona ore was investigated using sensor-based sorting, to produce a beneficiated trona stream that would be fed to calcination. The study encompassed preparation of a run-of-mine (ROM) Green River ore sample, selection of 25–75-mm-sized specimens, imaging of the specimens by x-ray transmission (XRT), color, and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF)-based sensors, insoluble analysis of the specimens, and a bench-scale sorting test. Results of the study established that a correlation between the color of the individual ore particles and their insoluble content existed and that a surface detection-based sensor, particularly LIF, was apparently more suitable than XRT to produce a beneficiated trona stream. The bench-scale sorting test demonstrated that a 65% separation efficiency and a 70% recovery of trona could be achieved.

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

The Shoreline Consolidation Sewer is a CSO control project in Cleveland, Ohio that requires the installation of 5,000 feet of 72-inch inside diameter pipe using microtunneling methods. After award, the contractor submitted a value engineering proposal to eliminate two deep shafts and install the tunnel in two drives instead of four. In an example of successful collaboration, owner, contractor, and engineer worked together during the initial construction stages to modify the design and update the contract documents. This paper examines the importance of exible requirements in contract documents and a collaborative environment between all parties to successfully deliver a project.

Evver since it first displayed an autonomous mining truck at the 1996 MinExpo show in Las Vegas, NV, Caterpillar has been building the blocks to a fully autonomous mine. In May, the company unveiled another block in that progression, the new Cat MineStar System that it says is ?the industry?s broadest, most comprehensively integrated miner operations and mobile equipment management system.? The full system is comprised of five capability sets ? Fleet, Terrain, Detect, Health and Command ? to help operators define the size and scope of their management system based on the needs of their mining operations. Michael Murphy, technology and autonomy manager for Cat Global Mining, explained that the customers were not ready for an autonomous mining truck in 1996, but that many customers wanted the building blocks to eventually get to autonomous mining. After 15 years of work, Murphy said the building blocks have come together in the form of the Cat MineStar System.

In the beginning of the third millennium, the world mining industry has to cope with many challenges; the continuous need for mineral resource deposits and the mostly unsolved economic efforts should be accompanied with ecologic measures mankind has to take in order to avoid self-destruction. The present paper analyses the possibilities of using underground mining spaces in Romania for storing dangerous waste and suggests viable solutions. The characteristics of dangerous wastes and their disposal in suitable underground spaces are analyzed. Also, some methods for deactivating dangerous solid wastes as well as the importance of monitoring underground spaces in order to eliminate environmental impact risks are presented.

For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? Cliffs? outreach effort is just one of the surprising ways mining companies across Minnesota are reaching out to stakeholders and finding success. The 85th annual SME Minnesota Section Meeting (73rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium), held April 17-18 in Duluth, MN, demonstrated the Minnesota mining community?s commitment to connection and collaboration, and how that approach is bringing success.

"It is well known that froth visual features reflect the operating conditions of the flotation process, so that being able to accurately obtain the froth properties is the most significant criteria to optimize and control this process. Froth segmentation is a useful procedure that can determine the bubble size distribution. Several algorithms have been proposed in this field, but marker-based watershed transform shows the best performance. In spite of this fact, the algorithm suffers from oversegmentation in cases when the flotation froth includes large bubbles along with small ones. In the paper, the marker-based watershed method is modified to prevent oversegmentation of large bubbles. The developed algorithm is validated using some froth images captured at different operating conditions, so the results indicate that the method can segment the mixture of big and small bubbles effectively.IntroductionFroth flotation is a widely used process for separating valuable from gangue minerals. Effective control of flotation circuits has a dramatic effect on overall performance of a mineral processing plant. In most flotation plants, process operators monitor the froth surface visually and make adjustments to process parameters based on their interpretation of the surface appearance and their idea of the appearance of an ideal froth. However, due to natural complexity of the flotation process, achieving optimal control is often not possible for human operators.In recent years, attempts have been made to control the flotation circuits using machine vision systems (Moolman et al., 1995; 1996a,b; Bartolacci et al., 2006; Kaartinen et al., 2006; Vanegas and Holtham, 2008; Aldrich et al., 2010). The froth bubble size distribution is the most significant control variable that reflects the operating conditions in a flotation machine. To date, a number of approaches have been proposed for bubble size measurement from froth images, including segmentation (Sadr-kazemi and Cilliers, 1997; Wang et al., 2003; Mehrshad and Massinaei, 2011), texture spectrum (Nguyen and Thornton, 1995), wavelet (Liu et al., 2005), an improved texture spectrum approach, a method based on binary images (Lin et al., 2008) and, finally, using interfacial morphological information (Yang et al., 2009)."

Hydrophobic particles with diameters between 1 and 3 mm are poorly recovered by conventional flotation techniques. A novel reverse flotation technique is described whereby coarse particles with surfaces rendered highly hydrophobic, repel the bubble films in a froth and thus drop through the froth under gravity, to be recovered as a sink product. Conversely, gangue or hydrophilic particles are supported by the bubble films in the froth and are therefore recovered as a floating product. Tracer tests were conducted in the cell in order to study the dynamic behaviour of solid particles in the froth. The effects of hydrophobicity, density, particle size and particle shape were investigated experimentally. The higher the hydrophobicity of the particles, the lower the recovery of particles as a floating product, while the recovery of particles as a sink product increases with an increase in particle density. Furthermore, a decrease in particle size results in an increase recovery of hydrophobic particles as a floating product. When treating particles of the same mass-to-surface-area ratio in the froth, flat particles would be recovered as a floating product in preference to cubic, disc-shaped, cylindrical and spherical particles, in that order.

INTRODUCTION In the Polish coal mining industry, the Upper Silesian coal basin has an important position. It contributes over 98% of the total coal production of Poland which reached 193 mt in the year 1979. In view of the significant urbanized area in this region as well as the industrial potential, it is important to protect the surface by stowing the mined out underground workings. Approximately 18% of the total production is mined from longwall faces with stowing. However, caved longwall faces are most popular. In the upper Silesian coalfield, approximately 337 highly mechanized longwall faces are in operation. Out of these 337 faces, 301 longwall faces are caved. One of the main requirements for effective and safe coal extraction is a suitable method for strata control. We can divide the complex process of strata control into four steps: 1. Strata investigations 2. Selection of supports for roadways 3. Selection of supports for longwall 4. Rock bursts and other hazards protection STRATA INVESTIGATIONS Estimation of the structure and physico-mechanical properties of the rock mass surrounding the workings is an important constituent of strata control. These factors definitely influence the rock stability, support load, working conditions as well as the mining technology. Complex methods of strata investigations involve a set of indicators enabling the estimation of the stability of the roof rock, strength of the coal seam and load bearing capacity of the floor. The basis for the evaluation of roof stability for a coal seam is the classification according to the resistance to bed separation (1). The bed separation resistance is equal to the strength of the rock in tension perpendicular to the bedding plane. In order to properly classify a rock, it is indispensable to make continuous profiles of the bed separation resistance from the immediate roof up to a distance of three times the thickness of the coal seam. The profiles are developed by utilizing mine roof investigations with the hydraulic borehole penetrometer. (Fig. 1) The penetration resistance is determined by the critical pressure required to cause crushing of the rock by the penetrometer indentor (2). The classification of roof rocks and their ability to cave spontaneously during longwall mining is shown in [Fig. 2]. The measurement of the critical pressure also allows for the determination of the compressive strength of the rock, the index of workability and roof fissuration.

INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1). Potash is Canada&apos;s leading industrial mineral in terms of value of production, with 11.1 M tonnes of muriate of potash produced in 1992 for a value in excess of $1 billion U.S. Each tonne of potash produced generates about 2 tonnes of waste salt, together with slimes and brine. The disposal of these waste products, particularly the salt and slimes which are discharged on the surface, has recently become an environmental concern. This concern is forcing companies and regulatory authorities to review disposal practices. In New Brunswick, on Canada&apos;s east coast, Potash Company of America operates a mine at which 2 M tonnes of potash ore and 0.5 M tonnes of rock salt are mined each year. The mine is situated in an environmentally sensitive area, noted for its dairy farming and salmon angling. In such an area it was recognized that the storage of waste on surface would be unacceptable, and the mine was designed around this principle. Three main waste streams - salt, slimes, and brine - must be managed as an integral part of the mining system. Around 1.5 M tonnes of fine salt tailings from the milling process and the rock salt screening operation, are sent directly to the active cut-and-fill potash stopes to be used as backfill. Slimes and excess brine from the mill are piped underground as a slurry to be discharged into one of the basin shaped stopes created by mining of the rock salt. While the slimes settle out, the clarified brine is withdrawn from part of the stope to be pumped to surface as a feedstock for the evaporator - a process which recovers the contained potash values in the brine. By designing a system which integrates the mining, processing and disposal of all product streams, and by careful production planning, it has been shown that zero effluent potash mining is possible and points the way for the industry in the future.
