The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.

Artificial Intelligence has a long history but is currently coming strongly into focus with new advancements. This leads to questions many people are asking: what exactly is AI, how can it be used effectively in mining operations, and what foundation is required to make AI implementations successful? In mining, many AI applications exist, from drill pattern optimization to predictive maintenance. However, many implementations struggle due to data integration challenges. Mining operations generate large amounts of data from many sources, such as fleet management systems, drill sensors, process control systems, and laboratory results. Unfortunately, this data often exists in silos where it’s difficult to get it out, making AI applications unable to leverage it. Worse still, tools that use AI don’t always provide their data back to the system, creating even further data silos. All these problems make it hard to take advantage of the data at the mine, slowing down and reducing the effectiveness of AI. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to organizing mining data using an AI-ready knowledge graph system. We will first explore the evolution of AI in mining, from early expert systems to modern machine learning applications. Then, we will detail how a knowledge graph can integrate business context, operational data, and AI models into a cohesive system that enables more effective AI implementations across mining operations. The proposed method has been developed considering both the unique data challenges faced by the mining industry, while also considering best practices learned from the AI field at large. By following this approach, it’s possible to better utilize existing data, getting higher quality and more complete results faster, and in a way that’s reusable and composable.

The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.

Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

"In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. The Roybal Raise incorporates the simplicity and low cost of a short bald-headed raise while overcoming the usual impediments to driving a high baldheaded raise. The concept provides for speedy excavation and maximizing the use of the excavated opening, using the rock for structural support. The design is simple: two baldheaded raises are driven parallel to one another, interconnected by dogholes about 8 m (25 ft) apart. In this fashion, the raise can be driven safely and efficiently to 60 m (200 ft) or more. When the raise is complete, the excavation requires no timber for support or partitioning. Rather, the rock itself supports the construction. As a test, a two-compartment Roybal Raise was attempted at the Independence mine in the Willow Creek District of Alaska. One side was driven 2 x 2 m (6 x 6 ft), intended for a manway and equipment skip. The other was driven 1.5 x 1.5 m (5 x 5 ft) for a muck compartment. Both sides were driven at a 65° angle from horizontal and 1 x 1 m (4 x 4 ft) dogholes spanned the 4.6-m (15-ft) pillar between the two compartments. After topping out at 50 m (160 ft), the raise was found to meet all expectations of efficiency, low cost, and practical simplicity. Technique Preparing the Roybal Raise for driving involves no elaborate or costly site prep except assembling materials and providing for muck removal. Normally, the raise muck falls directly onto the sill or track and is picked up either by an overshot mucker or a front-end loader. Raise mining proceeds initially by taking up both compartments simultaneously to the first doghole. It progresses by alternating one side as a clear manway for access with the other side, the active side, as a muck compartment (Fig. 1A). This stage proceeds quickly for no mucking or staging is required to cycle the first three rounds. On the fifth round, in addition to the normal raise round, rib holes are winged out toward the adjacent raise, thus starting the dogholes. Finally, as the sixth raise rounds are drilled and shot, the first doghole is also completed from both sides. The second stage commences by establishing one side as a clear manway for access while the other side, used as a muck compartment, is prepared for active mining. Figure 1B illustrates this step in the succession of raising with the active side advancing to the second doghole level. During this stage, services are maintained through the manway side and equipment is stowed in the doghole during blasting. As the active side advances, muck may be allowed to fill the bottom portion of that side since it is unnecessary to clear it for access. The next stage of raising involves cleaning out the former muck compartment and preparing it for use as a manway. At the same time, the former manway is prepared for advance and use as a muck compartment (Fig. 1C). As in the previous step, the same doghole is used for access and equipment storage. The active side advances until the second doghole is completed, at which point equipment and access are moved to the new doghole. From there, the active side is driven past the second doghole 8 m (25 ft) more to the third doghole level. Again, half of the doghole and the next raise round are mined. The fourth stage involves switch ing back the manway side for the muck side (Fig. ID). The new muck side is driven to the third doghole where equipment storage and access are reestablished. From there, the active side is advanced to the fourth doghole. In the same fashion, the raise is advanced to the top, alternating the manway side with the active side, maintaining access through the inactive manway, and storing equipment in the uppermost doghole. Climate change is the central challenge facing the mining industry, wherein producers must simultaneously ramp up production to provide the raw materials for clean technologies while transitioning to carbon neutrality. While transitioning to renewables will take time, mines can start improving energy efficiency while improving productivity today. This paper proposes a novel technology ecosystem that can help. By monitoring mine shovels, loaders, haul truck paths, and conveyor belts, the proposed technology enables particle size measurements throughout the operation, truck and belt volume monitoring, ground engaging tools monitoring, and boulder detection.

Enterprise unmanned traffic management (E-UTM) is a holistic system concept evolving from technological developments in radio frequency (RF), where dynamic tracking can be added into current and emerging platforms. This is done through inexpensive RF sensors capable of real-time and cooperative, non-GPS tracking enabling digital visualization of assets, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The RF sensors are low in size, weight and power (SWaP), creating efficiencies in energy and material consumption while transmitting positions in real time and at long ranges. Multiple UAS and other unmanned vehicles can be visualized for risk mitigation in operations, thus enabling mine management to have better decision-making capabilities in the current and future mosaic of mine operations.

The intensity of environmental conflict, the delays and legal battles that have marked the 1970's suggest the need for additional processes to resolve environmental disputes. Our present means frequently fail to address the real issues separating individuals and institutions. They are primarily adversary processes that foster polarization and reduce cooperative efforts. At the Office of Environmental Mediation, we have no quarrel with adversary processes nor with polarization, for both serve as important spurs to necessary change. We do seek cooperation among parties at a point where there can be a realistic expectation of success in facilitating a resolution of their mutual differences.

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. Crucial information about safety, design, and operation can be utilized in underground mines from ground movement data. Communicating the information and exploring new findings can be a challenge in a decade where there is an ever-increasing volume and velocity of data due to advancements in mining technologies. This challenge escalates for geotechnical data as it is multidimensional, depending on the space and the rate it takes place. To tackle this challenge, geotechnical engineers should focus on utilizing simple yet compelling visualization of rock mass data in 3D. Competent visualizations of ground conditions as a Trigger Action and Response Plan (TARP) could ease the communication of safety concerns and the exploration of rock mass displacement and strain surrounding an opening at an underground mine. Therefore, this study focuses on using scientific visualization methods by rendering geotechnical data over the surface of a 3D mesh model to display TARP levels. The study is conducted at the San Xavier (SX) Underground Mine Laboratory’s East decline. The project aims to produce visualizations that optimize the use of geotechnical data in near-real-time.

INTRODUCTION The scope of mineral finance extends beyond the economic aspects of property evaluation to all of those activities involving acquisition and utilization of funds with an objective to optimize the value of the firm. It must, therefore, en- compass consideration of the overall financial goals of the firm, decisions involving external versus internal growth and domestic versus foreign investments, management of working cap- ital, efforts to minimize the cost of capital, and decisions with regards to the instruments of long- term debt and equity financing. The scope of this section is limited to considerations of special interest to the mineral or petroleum engineer, which include the following aspects of mineral finance: (1) The technical aspects of mineral or coal property or oil and gas reservoir evaluation which provide the basis for estimation and forecasting of revenues and costs. (2) Estimation and forecasting of costs and prices in a inflationary economic environment. (3) Calculation of cash flows which model .. , the investment in minerals, coal or oil, and gas. Such models require assumptions as to the timing of cash flows, escalation of capital and operating costs, base prices, and escalation, the tax regime, royalties, division of profits and the economic aspects of loans. (4) The role of discount rate in the economic analysis of an investment which requires consideration of the opportunity costs of the firm, cost of capital, risk premiums. (5) Risk analysis including application of the concepts of conditional net present value, expected value, and risk preference as well as the application of the techniques of sensitivity and simulation. (6) Selection of application criteria for in- vestment decision making. (7) Capital structure with particular reference to the effect of debt financing. (8) Consideration of sources of funds utilized by the minerals industries. (9) Long-range planning including portfolio analysis. This section is limited to principles, methodologies, and trends in mineral investment, finance, and long-range planning in the United States with a perspective from the year 1984. Consideration of the key concepts is supplemented by case examples of investment risk analysis and financial structure. Important factors affecting mineral investment evaluation during the 1980s include volatile metals prices, cost inflation, and the introduction of techniques requiring the computer and its capacity for improved technical and economic analysis into the hands of those who know most about the industry. The personal computer is replacing the calculator on the desk of the individual analyst and is rapidly becoming a required tool for the study of engineering and economics. Examples of change brought about by the micro-computer include greatly improved techniques of cost estimation, wider application of the computer for project analysis, computer graphics, reserve estimation, geostatistical analysis, mine design and other techniques that capitalize on the ability of the computer to handle

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

The four unit Cholla coal fired power station at Joseph City, Arizona, consumes coal from the McKinley mine located in western New Mexico. Since coals may contain relatively high uranium or thorium concentrations and may release quantities of detrimental progeny of these elements to the environs, there is concern that releases may pose an adverse environmental impact or even a health hazard to the workers. Thus, an effort was made to quantify the radionuclide content of the coal and compare the results with radionuclide concentrations already present in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally an attempt was made to assess any potential for significant enhancement of the levels of radioactivity in the environment or to plant personnel. Background gamma radiation measurements at and near the plant ranged from 8 to 12 [µ]R/hr (70 to 105 mR/yr) with a few localized anomolies measuring to 18 [u]R/hr (160 mR/yr). Levels on top of the coal storage piles decreased to ~ 6.5 [u]R/hr (60 mR/yr). Apparently the direct radiation emitted from the coal is less than the background levels in the vicinity of the plant. Measurements performed on top of several coal seams at the mine confirmed low radiation levels emanating from coal, but readings more than doubled when the overburden was monitored. Laboratory gamma spectrometry confirmed the lower amounts of natural radioactivity in the coal when compared against soil and water samples obtained in the vicinity of the plant and the overburden at the mine. In an effort to see if there is biological enhancement, animal feces was sampled. The radiation variations were found to be influenced primarily by naturally occurring potassium-40 which varied from ~ 1 to 18 pCi/gm rather than fluctuations in the uranium and thorium series. The potassium-40 concentrated in the ash were similar to the concentrations in the environs around the disposal ponds while Radium-226 concentrated in the fly ash was ~ 3 times that found in the immediate surroundings. Radon-222 gas concentrations in buildings at or near the plant ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pCi/l and were generally lower than indoor concentrations measured in the Phoenix area. The burning of coal at the Cholla station does not appear to increase ambient levels of radioactivity found in the surrounding environs or to the workers. However, the use of byproduct fly ash for construction purposes may need to be examined.

Hecla Limited, Magee Scientific and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) combined efforts to evaluate an in situ air filtration system for use in an underground mine environment. The purpose of the collaboration was to determine the efficacy of such a technology for reducing the concentration of airborne diesel particulate matter (DPM), with the aim of improving air quality in underground hardrock mines. A secondary goal was to evaluate the use of an aethalometer as a means of real-time measurement of black carbon as a surrogate for DPM. The evaluation included measuring the DPM-capture efficiency of the filter when it was preloaded with dust. Toward this end, rock dust was introduced at the filter inlet to create a dust layer on the filter surface, with the intent of providing improved capture of the much smaller DPM particles. The filtration efficiency for DPM was assessed by comparing measurements of DPM taken at the inlet and outlet of the system, using both realtime and time-weighted-average approaches. The real-time measurements were performed with a Model AE33 aethalometer, and filter samples analyzed by the NIOSH 5040 method were used to assess the effects of the system on time-weighted-average concentrations of total carbon. Results showed a reduction in DPM concentrations in the range of 82 to 89 percent. While the calculated efficiencies based on the two different measurement methods were similar, the DPM levels reported by the aethalometer were higher, possibly due to differences in the performance of the size selectors used for the two methods: impactors versus cyclones. More research is required to develop a robust correlation between the two methods to support the use of the aethalometer in future mining applications. The advantages of the aethalometer are that it can measure and record DPM levels for weeks at a time and can be directly connected to a mine monitoring system, potentially at multiple locations. Ideally, such data can be used to initiate the startup of the filtration system should DPM concentrations reach an action level. This work demonstrated that in situ filtration systems, modified to collect DPM and coupled with real-time monitoring, show promise in reducing DPM concentrations in the mine environment.

"One critical factor in mineral reserves reporting, as well as mine-reserves reconciliation, is the impact of dilution and ore loss in the mining process. This paper considers the implications of various factors on dilution and ore loss projections, by orebody geometry, mining method, and ore control systems. We also discuss the implications of resource estimation methodology on dilution for reserves. DEFINITIONS Dilution and ore loss are two critical concepts in mining, which address the differences encountered between modeled grade and tonnages and actual production. Dilution is volume increase and grade reduction caused by multiple factors, chief among which are mining of waste material along ore-waste contacts, mining of internal waste as ore, and misclassification of waste as ore in the ore control process. There are also geostatistical and estimation aspects sometimes lumped with dilution, including the volume-variance effect (the tendency for small volumes of material to include a less regular distribution of grade than large volumes of material). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule in 2014 that required numerous changes in compliance dust sampling requirements for coal mine operators. Two key parts of this rule were the lowering of the respirable coal mine dust standard from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 and requiring operators of underground coal mines to use a continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) for compliance sampling. The CPDM currently approved for compliance sampling is equipped with a display that provides miners with in-shift information on their respirable dust exposure. The goal was to provide an indication of a potential overexposure and empower the miner and mine operator to implement changes in controls and/or operating practices to prevent an overexposure from occurring.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Long rail tunnels require in most cases powerful mechanical ventilations. Besides requirements related to normal operation and maintenance, operational safety always requires a high level of smoke management. Identifying the optimum ventilation concept is essential for achieving proper performance and safety while keeping investment and operational cost at a reasonable level. For the purpose of the present paper, long tunnels have a length of typically 20 km or more. This is related to the European classification of trains (TSI 1303/2014), where the maximum distance from the portals to a firefighting point and between firefighting points is limited to 20 km (only category B passenger rolling stock allowed) or 5 km (general case). From TSI 1303/2014 it can be concluded, that tunnels over 20 km require in any case emergency stations with complex mechanical ventilations. Based on the experience arising from a number of recent projects in the European area, including in particular Gotthard (GBT), Lötschberg, Lyon-Tourin (LTF), Brenner (BBT) and Gibraltar, safety-relevant issues related to the ventilation of long railways tunnels are reviewed in this paper. Amberg Engineering is directly involved in these challenging design tasks and can provide first-hand experience and know-how. As a particular highlight, special attention is devoted to the longest tunnel worldwide, the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be commissioned in 2016. THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL Overview The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be commissioned in 2016 (official inauguration on the 1st of June and beginning of regular operation on the 11th of December) and will be the worldwide longest tunnel. Its complex and powerful ventilation system is very representative for many other long tunnels and is used as reference in this paper. Therefore, a few key characteristics of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and its ventilation system will be described in some detail in this initial chapter. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) consists of two single-track tunnel tubes with connecting galleries every 312 meters. Two so-called multi-functional stations (MFS), located at roughly 1/3 and 2/3 of the tunnel length, host the key equipment for normal and for emergency operation. At these locations, double crossovers allow trains to switch from one tunnel tube to the other. An emergency station is located in each multifunctional station, allowing trains to stop in case of emergency. The general layout of the GBT is presented in Figure 1."
