Flotation of dolomite from apatite was investigated, using dodecylamine hydrochloride or sodium oleate as the collector, in the absence and presence of inorganic modifiers such as sodium chloride. Separation of dolomite from apatite was anticipated from the single mineral experiments under various pH and collector concentration conditions. Flotation selectivity in the mixtures, however, was found to be limited. Attempts to control the flotation response of these minerals by addition of salts such as NaCI and KCI indicated that selectivity is possible. The presence of sodium chloride was determined to depress apatite flotation using sodium oleate leaving dolomite flotation unaffected (Moudgil and Ince, 1989). In this paper, conditions for optimum separation and the effect of major parameters on the desired selectivity are discussed.

Gold ores in the geologically more recent rocks are often associated with copper minerals which pose problems of high reagent consumption with conventional cyanidation practice. Many examples exist in northern Australia, Indonesia, Papua­New Guinea, Chile, and Brazil where, despite various treatment options (LaBrooy, 1992), the processing of oxide and transition ores is uneconomic either for copper or gold recovery. Hence, there is a need for a reagent which is selective for gold without leaching copper minerals. The ammonia-cyanide system appears to meet this criterion (Muir et al, 1989; LaBrooy et al, 1991; Costello et al, 1992; Hayes and Corrans, 1992) but it has proven difficult to optimise and apply to a variety of ores due to differences in the mineralogy and reactivity of ores and a lack of understanding of how the system works. Recent work on the mechanism, however, (Muir et al, 1993) has thrown a new light on the problem which should allow better process control. Ammonia­cyanide mixtures behave neither like free cyanide nor free ammonia and too much of either reagent in the mixture is detrimental. The key to the process is understanding how ammonia enhances gold extraction yet inhibits copper extraction in an essentially cyanide environment.

A quantitative damage evaluation caused by ground motions associated with strong roof caving is presented. The strong roofs are modeled as either cantilevering or bridging beams over continuous elastic foundations subject to an exponentially distributed vertical stress. Major factors influencing roof caveability and strain energy buildup are identified and investigated. A methodology to evaluate the strain energy accumulation caused by overhanging roof is presented. The potential for mine tremors is determined in terms of the local Richter magnitude ML which depends on the seismic energy transformed from the stored strain energy released when the roof fails. A particle velocity model is applied to estimate the damage area associated with roof collapse. A case study from a Utah coal mine shows that estimations of bump severity and damage area agree well with the field observations.

Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Technology Surface mining is the safest and most economical way to produce raw materials from the earth's crust. It also affords a more healthier working environment for the individual miner. The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."

The Bituminous Coal Mining Industry of the Federal Republic of Germany produces nearly 100 million t/yr of clean coal. The largest coal mining area is the Ruhr District with dimensions of 100 x 40 km (65 x 25 miles). Figure 1: Here is the general administration of Ruhrkohle Akteingesellschaft RAG with its three divisions. Other coal mining areas in Germany are the Saar District and the Aachen District. Ruhrkohle produces 70 million t/yr of clean coal. The company operates 28 mines in the Ruhr District with an average raw coal production of 18000 t/day. Their average mining depth is 831 m (2740 ft.) and the average seam thickness is 177 cm (70 in.). Figure 2: Preparation plant reject is 44.6%. All following production figures will be with reference to raw coal because the raw coal production is the technically relevant number. Mining operations are mainly in non-dipping coal deposits whereby mechanized equipment for flat seams is also applied to deposits dipping up to 45? Coal extraction is done exclusively by the longwall method. Approximately 200 longwall installations are in production at any time. The, principle purpose of applying control to any process is to improve -its profitability. Even when considering the impact of a plant on its surrounding ecology this is still, true, since the sanctions felt most immediately from violations of the regulations are the economic penalties or fines which result. 'Economic performance can be improved within a plant in several ways. Steps can be taken to cut the cost or quantity of resources (power, water, steam, reagents) consumed per ton of throughput. Alternatively the operation of the plant can be changed so as to increase product yield per ton of throughput. Or the cost of labor and plant overhead per ton of product can be reduced by raising the total 'throughput, assuming-that the increased amount of product can be sold for the same unit price. In designing a program to improve plant performance, all three routes should be borne in mind. To maximize the return on investment over a longer period, it is also desirable to set up a comprehensive plan of improvement, equipment being specified at each step in the implementation so as to ensure that it fits in with later requirements later implementation being either by means of modular additions or by having the necessary interfaces built into the original equipment. It is much cheaper in the long run to buy features which have been factory-installed, than to have to make provision for their later addition in the field. This paper examines some ways of improving plant performance by the application of various process control techniques using both analog and digital con¬trol equipment. A general philosophy of application is suggested and specific examples described.

An ongoing research program at the Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is directed toward investigating drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, and drill revolutions) during the drilling of roof bolt holes. A system that measures these drilling parameters calculates the specific energy of drilling, and determines drill bit position has been developed by the Bureau and mounted on a roof bolting/drilling machine, through the use of a microcomputer, critical drilling parameters can be immediately interpreted and analyzed. This makes it possible to inform the operator of hazardous roof conditions. Initial results of this program are presented here.

Adsorption of sulfide collectors such as xanthate on pyrite has been studied extensively over several decades using a wide variety of techniques. In spite of this, there are unanswered questions as to the identity of adsorbed species on pyrite surfaces -dixanthogen vs. iron xanthate complexes. Far less is known in non-xanthate collector systems. We have used Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) successfully in the past to obtain direct evidence for the identity of the adsorbed collector species on copper sulfides, galena and Cu-activated quartz. The present study is an extension of the SIMS analysis to investigate the adsorption of xanthate, dithiovhosphate, dithiocarbamate, and modified thionocarbamates and thioureas on pyrite. Adsorption of these collectors on chalcocite was also studied for comparison. An attempt was also made to obtain SIMS spectra for pure dixanthogens at room temperature. Only in the case of dithiocarbamate (DTC) was there direct evidence for the presence of not only the collector dimer, but also iron-DTC complexes. On chalcocite, only the copper-DTC complexes were detected (no dimer). In the case of xanthate, the collector molecular ion and its S adduct -which are possible fragments from dixanthogen -were detected on pyrite, along with a fragment peak: suggesting Fe2X. For dithiophosphate, the collector molecular ion and Fe(DTP)(OH) complex were detected (no dimer). For modified thionocarbamate and thiourea, adsorption on pyrite was negligible.

In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company's participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920's, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah's strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday's horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today's- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today's 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today's advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

It started' in 1936 when some Dutch adventurers wanted to scale the highest mountain in the South Pacific. Quite by accident, they discovered the Ertsberg, a contact deposit of magnetite laced with chalcopyrite, in a high mountain valley where it had been gouged at by glaciers and finally left as a solitary pillar for its discovery by a geologist who lent purpose to the expedition, Dr. J.J. Dozy. By the-.time a report was published describing the deposit, war had hit the Netherlands. Perhaps again by accident, the report was uncovered in 1959 by the East Borneo Company. At this point, Freeport entered the scene through its vice president for exploration, Forbes Wilson. During the course of a meeting on laterite prospects, the Ertsberg was introduced and he put the wheels into motion for Freeport to join in its exploration. You might, at this point, ask yourself whether you or your company would have taken on a venture to look at a reportedly large high grade copper outcrop in New Guinea, an unexplored land known best for its inhospitable climate, terrain and head-hunters. I heard the chief executive of one large mining company comment sometime back that neither he nor his company would have gotten involved. I won't attempt to describe the trials of the initial exploration expedition that passed through dense-man grove swamps, tropical jungle and across jagged mountains a distance of some 200 miles to get to the Ertsberg in 1960. It should be chronicled by its participants - Forbes Wilson, Del Flint, and John Bowenkamp. Needless to say, the participants relish the experience but wouldn't be among those volunteering for a return engagement. As a result, the Ertsberg changed from a reported outcrop to a mineral deposit containing an estimated 13 million tons with systematic surface sampling indicating a copper grade of over four percent. Moreover, the deposit extended to an indeterminate depth with the possibility of doubling or tripling. reserves well within reason.

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) has became an attractive alternative technology to be a new process to recover metal, of which can be substitute the existing Leaching/Solvent extraction processes. Solvent extraction of metallic ions is a technically important and also well-established process that is used in the chemical and hydrometallurgical industries.1 Solvent extraction techniques use the chelation of metallic ions dissolved in liquid solution with organic ligands. Conventional solvent-extraction technique needs large amount of organic solvents and often creates environmental problems.2 More environment-friendly technology is needed nowadays, and there have been increasing attentions to extract metal ions by SFE. CO2 becomes one of the most notable alternative organic solvents due to its nonflammable, nontoxic, nonpolluting, and relatively inexpensive properties with its moderate critical point (73.8 bar, 31.06 °C). Many works have been reported in metal extraction under the supercritical CO2 (scCO2) solvent.3-5 In this study, to recover cobalt from wastes especially from spent lithium ion battery scrap, we selected two ligands ? Cyanex 272 and DEA (diethylamine) for the metal extraction in scCO2. Cyanex 272 is a commercially available extractant along with its series, Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302. Smart and coauthors measured the metal extracting abilities of these three extractants, and found that Cyanex 301 and Cyanex 302 extracted metal ions much better than Cyanex 272 in the scCO2 solvent.10 The pH of water contacted with high pressure CO2 (70-200 bar, 25-70 oC) is about 2.8-2.95 based on the calculation and the measurement.6-7 Cyanex 272 is known to be less effective as a metal extractant in this low pH environment compared with other Cyanex series. However, when DEA is added to metal extraction reaction with Cyanex-272, DEA works as a strong base to Cyanex 272 converting Cyanex 272 to a deprotonated form (Figure 1), which results in an easy formation of metal complex and the enhanced extraction rate of metal ion.8 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is the metal extraction from spent lithium ion battery waste using scCO2 with Cyanex 272 and DEA.

The eighties are likely to witness the first commercial-size coal-to-gasoline plant(s) in the U.S., although uncertainty regarding crude prices and cautious involvement of the Federal Government in the synfuels development are evident. The formation of The U.S. Synthetic Fuels Corporation with passage of the Energy Security Act is projected to pave the way for some of the projects on a moderate scale. The corporate objectives (1) are to provide funds for supporting a number of feasibility studies and loan guarantees for the construction of at least some commercial-size plants and the possibility of product price supports or purchase commitments. There are a number of coal conversion processes (2) currently under evaluation for producing either gaseous or liquid plus gaseous fuels, the other processes such as SRC I are for producing desulfurized deashed clean solid fuel for commercial use.

Gold is sufficiently valuable that concentrations as small as 1 p.p.m. may support low-cost mining. Mindful of this, Sunoco Energy Development Company (Sunedco) obtained fire-assay analyses on some sulfide-rich sandstone encountered during routine drilling. Initial fire-assay values from independent laboratories indicated some significant gold values and independent analysis by atomic-absorption spectroscopy also indicated detectable gold at economically interesting concentrations. Sunoco geologists realized the potential for spurious results inherent in both fire assaying and atomic-absorption spectroscopy. Fire assaying that relies on gold measurement by weight requires perfect separation of gold from all other elements, Imperfect separation may artificially enhance apparent gold concentrations. Atomic-absorption-spectroscopy (AAS) measurements are potentially subject to interferences from other elements. For example, Beamish and Van Loon (1977, p.4) report AAS measurements of 4 p.p.m. Au to be characteristic of completely barren soil samples when samples are prepared by standard dissolution in HC1 to form solutions of about 10,000 p.p.m. total cations (mostly Na, Ca, Mg, Al, and Fe) .

A parametric study was conducted to establish the optimum operating conditions for the column flotation of fine coal. The parameters examined in this investigation included collector and frother dosages, feed solids content, and the volumetric flow rates of feed slurry, air and wash water. Despite the wide range of conditions studied the experimental data were found to fall along single grade-recovery curves, just below the maximum separation predicted by the release analysis technique. The deviation of the parametric test data from the release curve was attributed to the nonselective entrainment of mineral matter associated with poor froth washing. The operating point on the characteristic recovery-grade curve was found to be primarily determined by feed rate and aeration rate.

To generate a most profitable ultimate pit limit is generally the first step in mine design. This paper presents a new graph theory oriented, optimum ultimate pit limit design algorithm which will maximize the total undiscounted net profit. This algorithm performs much better than the well known Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. This algorithm operates on many directed trees in a graph, where each vertex in a tree represents a block in the mine model. The formation of each directed tree is based more on the ore-waste support concept than the geometry constraints alone. The general procedures of the algorithm, programming considerations and two case study results are discussed in the paper.

In order to monitor/control airflow rate distribution in a complicated ventilation network installed many regulators, an integrated system composed of expert system, exerting programs for simulation to get macroscopic characteristics and drawing diagram, monitoring system and so on is introduced in this study. This system is made up of airflow velocity sensors and computers linked to an local area network. The main results of this study are as follows; 1) Combinations of two branches to monitor aerodynamic resistance change in a branch p in a network can be selected by comparing factor's value in a branch relation table. 2) When the combination of sensor branches for a branch p does not exist in the network at present condition, the system changes aero- dynamic resistances of appropriate branch q placed a regulator by referring branch relation table. And then the system asks other computer to get macroscopic characteristics under altered value of aerodynamic resistance of the branch q. 3) Dot pattern diagram shows airflow rate relation between an active branch and a passive branch. Three relations such as a) a straight line, b) a monotonous curve and c) extremums are displayed in different patterns for all the sets between an active branch and a passive branch at a time. 4) The ranges of airflow rate in coal faces by changing aerodynamic resistance of any one branch placed a regulator are shown in the Pareto diagram using values in the branch relation table. 5) Ventilation transfer diagram with two parameter, one shows airflow rate in a coal face and the other shows energy provided by main fans to overcome aerodynamic resistance in a net- work, is utilized to decide countermeasures for decreasing energy consumption in the network on increasing of airflow rate in the specified branch.

Industries dependent on pyrometallurgical processing generally find themselves facing a common set of problems, namely, serious environmental restrictions, heavy capital requirements for new facilities and for plant modernization, the certainty of rapidly escalating fuel costs, and the uncertainty of fuel availability. To remain competitive, it has become clear to industry that a new dimension of attention must be given to assuring the maximum performance from plant facilities already in place and from those that are built in the future. In the last decade or so, in response to these needs, there has been an acceleration in the development of new pyrometallurgical process concepts. Their application, though spotty, is increasing. A common factor in this developing base of technology is the need for effective process control. Digital control is an indispensable element of meeting the challenge. We cannot make the point, however, by looking to a general survey of instrumental control of pyrometallurgical processes. Computer control is in its awkward adolescence. Its application is so new that only isolated applications can highlight the trends. For this reason, the authors have chosen to focus on the nonferrous smelting industry to illustrate the status of pyrometallurgical processing and control. We believe this approach will best meet the interests of most readers of this edition and the background of the authors.
